Chapter Five: Mai's Request
.
.
.
Akari is running down the road, looking for Rei. He'd gone on ahead as she still needed to speak to Beauregard. She'd seen him in front of Galaxy Hall and since she had a Wurmple on her from the day before, she handed it over. Beauregard was so happy. He'd even asked her to help him name his new Pokémon. Apparently, he believes that if he gives the little bug a pretty name it will encourage her to evolve into a Beautifly.
With her first request complete, she'd left the village, informing Russ of her destination on the way out. She then spoke to Seth at the Fieldlands Camp, before finally heading towards the bottom of Aspiration Hill. However, Volo was waiting for her behind a tree. The man jumped out, screaming, "BOO!" She'd nearly had a heart attack. Volo laughed, thinking her reaction was hilarious. If he was a Pokémon, he'd be a ghost type.
Fortunately, the conversation with Volo had been brief. He wanted to find out if Akari knew how to use the back strike technique. It was nice that he wanted to be helpful, but she told him that if he ever scared her like that again, she'd smack him. Again, his response was to laugh. He then wandered away as if nothing had happened.
It suited Akari just fine. She's rather late to meet with Mai. Rei wants this request to go well to keep relations between the Dimond Clan and Galaxy Team civil. She's off to a rough start by keeping Mai waiting longer than she should have.
Akari locates Rei quickly enough, finding him speaking to a dark-haired woman in traditional Dimond Clan kimono. It's likely this woman is Mai.
Rei waves at her. He'd noticed her approach. "Over here!"
The woman looks at Akari appraisingly. She then smiles kindly. "My, my… A new face in the village?"
Rei introduces her. "This here is Akari."
"I see." The woman crosses her arms. "Well, I'm one of the wardens of the Dimond Clan. You may call me Mai."
"A warden?" Akari parrots. She knows this position is significant, but she can't recall what it is.
Mai smiles. "I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that you don't know what a warden is. You're new to Hisui after all. However, such talk can wait. Right now, I'd rather we get straight to the point. I have a problem that I need help solving. So, the more important question is this: Do you feel confident that you can lead your Pokémon in battle?"
Akari is surprised. She hadn't expected Mai to want to battle. "I do." How else could she answer?
Mai nods in approval. "That's good to hear. That Security Corps of yours certainly wasn't up to the task." This comment is spoken in a rude tone that is directed at Rei. Mai doesn't seem to like him, or maybe it's just Galaxy Team in general. However, she's a part of them too, so why is Mai being kind to her?
Mai looks at Akari, stating, "This here is my partner, Munchlax. We were raised together like siblings. He battles at my side by choice, without needing any silly little balls like you use. Watch and learn."
Akari frowns. Silly balls? It never occurred to her that anyone would dislike Pokéballs. These items were such a big part of her life and culture back home that hearing disdain of any kind is jarring. "Sure." She summons Starly. It's her best bet. Munchlax is strong defensively, yet usually super slow. Starly won't deal a lot of damage with his hits, but he's quick and should be able to use repetitive strikes to bring their foe down.
"You're Starly looks happy." Mai's tone suggests she pleased. "That's refreshing to see. Usually, the Pokémon traveling with those in Galaxy Team are miserable."
Akari isn't sure how to respond. She'd noticed the same thing; Even Rei's Pikachu seems rather unhappy due to his trainer's ignorance. However, to agree or disagree is in bad taste. She settles for, "Your Munchlax appears to be very happy as well."
Mai smirks. "As I stated, we were raised as siblings. He doesn't belong to me. In fact, I consider Munchlax as one of my little brothers." There's something in her expression that makes her very proud. It's obvious that she truly does love this big eater Pokémon deeply.
Akari smiles, recalling her mother's Pokémon. "There's a Glameow back home, Gabby, my mother often calls her. I often introduced her as my sister when I was still small. She even slept next to me until I turned ten. That's when I left home for my journey."
Something shifts in Mai's gaze. She'd noticed Akari's use of the word, "Journey" yet doesn't comment. Instead, she says, "I'm pleased that you understand the deep connections between humans and Pokémon."
"I do," Akari responds.
"Very good." Mai's expression suddenly turns competitive. "I like you already. However, I will beat you." Mai looks at her Pokémon who's staring up at the sky, looking bored. "Munchlax, use pound!" Mai commands.
Munchlax jumps to attention, running towards Starly very quickly. Akari is shocked by his speed. "Starly, up in the air, now!" He avoids the hit.
"Hiding in the sky?" Mai is mocking her. "That's not going to work. Hyper Beam!"
Akari's eyes go wide. That's a seriously powerful attack, and this little Munchlax knows it?! They'll be in big trouble if Starly is hit. She needs to drop Munchlax's accuracy. "Starly, use gust on the dirt. Let's create a super powered sand attack."
The little bird flaps his wings hard, kicking up dust that's flung into his opponent's eyes. Munchlax flails about, rubbing his eyes. "Muunch!" He sounds distressed. It's an opening.
Akari takes it. "Aerial Ace!"
Starly swoops in, aiming the attack at Munchlax's side. He stumbles, but otherwise doesn't appear to have felt it. That's bad. "Starly, again!"
The little grey bird aims another attack. Mai smirks, clearly expecting this. "Munchlax, lean into that attack, take the damage, but grab Starly!"
'Dammit!' It's the only thing Akari can think of. Mai had seen her plan. Akari shouts, "Pull back!"
Starly tries his best, but his attack is already in motion. He's too inexperienced to change its course. The attack hits Munchlax head on, but the big eater grabs him by the wings. It hurts. "Chirp!"
"Starly!" Akari calls. They're trapped. Starly lacks the strength to fight back while in this position.
"Pound, now!" Mai commands.
"Muunn!" Munchlax tosses Starly to the ground before throwing his massive weight on top of the little bird. He then gets up, leaving his opponent struggling to stand. It's obvious Starly is in pain.
"Starly!" Akari calls. "It's fine, don't push yourself." She'd made a mistake. Akari is used to battling with highly trained Pokémon and she'd asked Starly to perform above his level. It had cost her Pokémon dearly. She feels terrible.
"Chirp!" Starly is frustrated. Akari can hear it in his cry. "Chirp!" He's too weak to win this, but he doesn't want to give up. Something stirs within him, a power he's never felt before. It's him, yet it feels different. He then feels his form shifting as light surrounds him.
"Oh?" Mai's eyes go wide. "Munchlax, don't let your guard down. He's evolving!"
"Munn?" Munchlax had thought the battle was over.
Akari smiles, relieved yet excited. "Starly! No, you're a Staravia now! A beautiful one that's now brimming with new strength." The will to win had been so powerful within her Pokémon that it triggered his evolution. That's not something that happens very often.
"Star!" Staravia looks at his body. He's bigger, with stronger claws, and powerful wings. "Star!" The tide in this battle is shifting.
"Staravia," Akari calls. "Let's not give them the opportunity to rebound; use Aerial Ace!"
"Munchlax," Mai shouts. "Brace yourself!" Staravia would be too fast to dodge. The hit is hard, sending the big eater to the ground. He cries out, upset. That attack had hurt a lot.
"Staravia, again," Akari commands.
Mai's eyes go wide. "Don't! Stop!" Munchlax won't last another attack. They've lost. Akari's Pokémon had hit her own with a lot more force than she'd expected. This newly evolved Staravia's attacks are brutal.
Staravia stops his next attack, but unlike last time, he's able to shift its course, striking a tree instead. The trunk vibrates, shaking its leaves and branches as a scare appears in the wood. The starling Pokémon looks at his trainer in question. Mai had asked him to stop, but Akari's the one he owes his loyalty too. He'll keep going if she wants him too.
Akari motions for her Pokémon to return to her side. "That's enough. We've won." She had seen the dark question in his eyes. While Starly are docile and sweet, feeding on seeds and berries, their evolutions are hunters; killing other Pokémon to fill their bellies. If she ordered it, Staravia would seriously hurt Munchlax.
Mai walks over to her Pokémon. She kneels, stating, "You fought well."
Munchlax picks himself up off the ground, looking at Mai. He's clearly upset. "Muuunnn…"
"It's alright." Mai strokes his head. It's a loving and comforting gesture; one that Munchlax leans into.
"I don't…" Rei's voice catches Akari's attention. He looks confused. "Why'd you stop the battle?" He's clearly asking Mai.
Akari tenses when the dark-haired woman's gaze turns hard. It's about to get ugly, and Mai doesn't disappoint. "You'd rather I sit by and let Staravia hurt or even potentially kill my partner when it's obvious we can't win? That's just like someone from Galaxy Team."
Rei's eyes go wide. "No! That's not what I meant!"
Akari's eyes go wide. That's a harsh accusation. Mai isn't done though. "You people use your Pokémon like tools, enslaving them in those balls. I've seen the outcome of some of the Security Corps battles; dead Pokémon laying on the ground, both wild and your own – it's disgusting!"
Akari's heart freezes. "Rei? Is she telling the truth?" That's bad – medieval bad. It's terrible, but a practice that was used in multiple regions for hundreds of years during times of war. Hisui isn't one of them though.
Rei looks away. "Well…"
"Don't lie to me!" Akari growls. "Because I will find out."
"It's happened," Rei admits. "But not recently! The commander ordered the practice stopped!" He looks terrified of what the results of this conversation will be. Akari loves Pokémon. This could make her defect to one of the native clans, and with Mai right there, it would likely be the Dimond. Galaxy Team would never get her back. Their leader, Adaman, is very possessive and protective of his people and the Pokémon that live among them.
Akari takes a deep breath. "But it did happen?" Akari knew the issues within Galaxy Team are bad, but no wonder the Dimond and Pearl Clans have taken issue with those dwelling within Jubilife village.
"Yes," Rei answers. "But it's why Laventon is here. It's also why the commander created the Survey Corps. He's trying to learn how to live alongside Pokémon now." He takes a deep shaky breath. "It's why we need you among us as well. I believe you're the only one who can help us move forward."
Akari sighs. "Right." Rei makes a point. If she bailed on Galaxy Team, the odds of them changing are slim. "Look, I'm not going to tolerate the killing of Pokémon; ours or the wild ones. It's cruel and unethical and I won't tolerate it. If I hear of it happening again, I'm out. I'll live in the wilds of this land on my own if I must."
"It won't," Rei insists. "The leaders of the Dimond and Pearl clans threatened war if Galaxy Team didn't stop. The commander relented to their demands. We came here to escape war, and well, he we aren't about to start another one here in this land."
Mai crosses her arms, considering. "My respect for you grows." She's speaking to Akari. "Your consideration of Pokémon is a relief to see."
Akari snorts. "Glad to hear it. However, Rei isn't a bad person. He'd never hurt a Pokémon intentionally. Accusing him of such was unkind and cruel."
Mai internally recoils. Adaman won't be pleased. "Forgive me, for this is a very sensitive topic for me."
Rei nods. "I understand. It's Munchlax's father, right? He was indirectly killed by Galaxy Team's activities."
"Yes." There's a misting in Mai's eyes, suggesting this topic is making her emotional. "That day is forever scared in my mind and his." She looks at Munchlax who's staring at the sky again, ignoring everything around him. It's for the best in this instance. Mai turns her attention to Akari. "You really aren't one of those usual Galaxy buffoons I deal with. You defeated my partner and have a backbone – I'm impressed."
Akari sighs. She can't hold this insult against Mai – not after what she's learned today. Death is a hard thing to get over. Akari changes the subject. "I'm curious, how did you teach Munchlax Hyper Beam?" It's the only thing she can think of asking.
Mai smirks. "You fell for it."
"Fell for what?" Akari inquires. Something feels off.
"My bluff," Mai answers.
It clicks. "Oh, you!" Akari huffs. Munchlax never knew Hyper Beam. Mai had just wanted to rattle her during the battle. Well, at least the tension between the three of them has lessened.
Mai shrugs. "Perhaps a gift will make up for it?"
"A gift?" Akari is curious.
"Indeed." Mai grabs a small bag off the ground. Akari hadn't noticed it until now. Mai says, "Galaxy Team makes all kinds of things with their crafting, don't they? These should prove to be useful materials."
Akari accepts the bag, looking inside. There's five Vivichokes inside. "Oh, thank you!" These are great for making medicine.
Mai smiles, pleased Akari likes the gift. "You and your Pokémon fought well together, practically acting as one with them. It's rather like the legendary hero of old – the one we tell stories of to our children."
Akari knows who Mai is speaking of. It's a story that's one of the foundations of native culture in Hisui. "The legendary hero, huh? I don't think I'm special like that at all."
Mai waves it off, unconcerned by the denial. Akari will eventually realize she's blessed by the Almighty Sinnoh, but for now, there's work to be done. "I think you're indeed the one for the job."
Akari turns serious. "What is it that you need?"
"There's a troublemaker," Mai begins. "And I need someone to deal with this alpha Pokémon causing problems upon Deertrack Heights. It is a large, fearsome foe – like any alpha – but you'll come, won't you?"
Akari's is surprised. This will be the third alpha she's met in only a two-day period. It's amazing how many of these guys are around currently while none exist in her own time. "Where is it located?"
Mai knew Akari would be up for the task. The way she battled that alpha Rufflet the day before was truly impressive. "It's messing around in Deertrack Heights."
The Arc Phone beeps, startling Akari. It had been quiet since the day she picked it up.
"What's that?" Both Rei and Mai ask together. Of course, the modern sounding beep wouldn't been anything they'd ever heard before.
Akari pulls the Arc Phone out of her satchel, studying the screen. There's a map on it. Arceus must want her to battle this alpha. He's showing her the way after all.
Rei recognizes the device from the day Akari arrived. She'd pulled it out and shown him, but it hadn't made any sounds then. Mai, however, has never seen it. She's curious, asking, "Is that one of those Galaxy Team inventions I keep hearing about?"
"No," Akari admits. "It's something I found shortly after arriving here. I think it's meant to help guide me. It first told me to seek out all Pokémon, and now it's given me a map to Deertrack Heights." She shows the screen to Mai.
"Incredible," Mai says. "It does appear to be showing the correct way to our destination."
"Hay Akari," Rei calls.
"Yes?" Akari responds.
Rei smiles a half smile. Akari notices that he seems a little uncomfortable. She can't blame him after the confrontation he had with Mai just minutes ago. He says, "I'll leave this bit to you! You shouldn't have any problem handling an alpha. After all, you've chased away two already."
Akari nods. She's not about to insist he stay. "I'll see you later."
"Later." Rei waves at Akari, then inclines his head in farewell to Mai. He then heads back down the dirt road towards Jubilife Village.
Mai looks at Akari. "It seems you're quite the asset to the Survey Corps, new one."
Akari shrugs. "Only to some."
Mai gaze seems to take on a hard edge again. "Some are cruel to you then?"
"Not really," Akari backtracks a little. The last thing she needs to do is give Mai a reason to dislike the people in Galaxy Team even more. "It just that some find my origins suspicious. This in turn, is making them weary of me." She isn't going to mention Beni's hostilities.
'Blind fools.' It's all Mai can think. Akari was brought here by the Almighty Sinnoh. She's blessed by its divine might, and thus she'll bless Hisui. "Before we continue, I must ask. Do you already know about the Almighty Sinnoh?"
"The Almighty Sinnoh…" Akari parrots consideringly. She knows the name. This is the deity of both the Pearl and Diamond clans. However, one clan technically worships Palkia while the other bows to Dialga. The problem is that the clans, at this point in history, don't realize that there are actually two different deities that are both ruled by Arceus. This has led them to fight amongst each other for hundreds of years. However, other than that, Akari knows very little about the subject. "I've heard some stories, but I'm not sure how accurate they are."
Mai expression is hard to read. It's almost as if she expected Akari to know something more. "I see, well, allow me to sketch out the basics. Almighty Sinnoh steers all time. It's said to have created the very universe using its power over time's flow, and this land of Hisui was born in the process. It's by grace of Almighty Sinnoh that Pokémon can live and thrive here."
Akari nods, taking in the information.
Mai continues, "We of the Dimond Clan are descendants of a people who crossed the sea and settled here in the Hisui region to venerate Almighty Sinnoh. However, it stole away from the world long ago, hiding itself from our sight. Almighty Sinnoh has only rarely been seen by any human, if the old tales are to be trusted."
"That's interesting," Akari states. That's rather unexpected as Dialga is a legendary of Sinnoh. Perhaps, it wasn't originally, and what of Palkia and the Pearl Clan. Did they come to Hisui in the same manner?
"It's our history," Mai states. "Although, none of us remember the name of our ancient home."
Akari finds this subject fascinating. In modern Sinnoh, the Dimond and Peal Clans are a stickler for tradition, and rarely mingle with outsiders. This makes understanding their people and culture rather difficult due to their secretive lifestyles. She now has a chance to learn about it. "You said earlier that you're a warden. What is that exactly?"
"A position of honor." Mai smiles fondly as she looks in the direction of Deertrack Heights. "There are still Pokémon here today in Hisui with a connection to Almighty Sinnoh, and it is the duty of wardens like me to attend to their needs."
Akari nods. "That's a neat job." Mai is basically a caretaker of a noble Pokémon.
Mai shakes her head. "I don't consider it such. It's a privilege to be selected to tend to these Pokémon. In fact, the Pokémon that graces Deertrack Heights is one of those honored few. It is directly descended from a Pokémon that was blessed with Almighty Sinnoh's protection."
Akari looks down the road. "Is it possible to meet this Pokémon?" She pauses, looking at Mai. "If that's okay, of course. I hope the request wasn't rude or anything."
"Not at all," Mai answers. "Fallow me, and maybe you'll be lucky enough to be graced by his presence."
"Wonderful!" Akari hopes she's lucky.
.
.
.
Akari couldn't believe this. Mai is just as startled by the sudden appearance. A Sylveon is watching them both from up on top of a steep hill. It's a Sylveon Akari instantly recognizes and by the way he stands frozen in his tracks, it's obvious he recognizes her as well. "Sly? SYL!" The cry is excited and happy.
"I can't…" Akari is stumbling over her words. "I can't believe you're here!" This Sylveon is hers. He was one of the last Pokémon she captured shortly after becoming champion. He was an Eevee then, and she found him wandering around the infamous Trophy Garden when she stopped by for a visit. She'd always wanted an Eevee and he'd been the first she ever captured.
"Syl!" Sylveon scales the rocks of the hill, desperately trying to get to the ground below. He missed his trainer so much, and now he's finally found her. It had been a rough trip to get here and through the weirdest of circumstances. He and several others were trapped in some sort of weird dimensional dome thing that dragged them all to this place. Sylveon had become freaked out by it, dashing away once it settled in this strange land. Then the sparking dome just vanished, leaving him trapped here without a way to return.
As for Akari, she had no idea how her Sylveon made it to Hisui, but she was so happy to see him. She ran over to the bottom of the hill just as her Pokémon made it to the bottom. Sylveon bolted into Akari's arms, rubbing, and nuzzling his face against hers. "Syl! Syl!" The moment is beautiful.
Mai is watching with pure astonishment. "This Pokémon is a partner of yours?" She can see the bond between them. It's strong like her own connection with Munchlax.
"Yes," Akari answers. There are tears of joy in her eyes. "He's mine." She snuggles into the cotton pink fur of her Pokémon as he wraps his ribbons around her. They instantly become connected to one another through their emotions.
Mai walks forward, Munchlax on her heels. He's very curious as well. "He's thin," she notes. "And his coat dull." Mai assumes something more is going on here than the obvious. Akari isn't one to abandon her Pokémon, she is certain of this. The Almighty Sinnoh would never bless one who'd be so cruel. However, there's no denying this Sylveon has been through a lot.
Akari pulls back, moving out of her Pokémon's embrace to look him over more thoroughly. "You're right." She kneels back down, scratching him behind the ear. "I honestly wonder how he even got here in the first place, and for how long. He's never been the best at surviving on his own, even before I captured him. I remember finding him stealing berries out of a garden as an Eevee.
"Is that so?" Something suddenly occurs to Mai. "This Sylveon is from beyond the rift like yourself, isn't he?"
"Yes," Akari answers. "But I don't think the same amount of time has passed for Sylveon. The last time I saw him, he was still a normal weight and his coat pristine. I think he's been scavenging the wilds for at least a few weeks if not more."
"I see." Mai can see the discrepancy. "If you fell from the sky two days ago, it would make sense that he would have as well, and yet, his condition suggests more time. It's very strange indeed."
"I agree." Akari looks at Sylveon. "I really wish he could explain how he if ended up here in detail, but I guess I'll just try to find out the basics through some questioning. It's really all I can at this point."
"I suppose so." Mai looks at Sylveon as well. He's paying close attention to his partner, waiting for the first question.
Akari asks it. "Do you remember how you got here?" Sylveon nods. It's a great start.
Akari asks her next question. "When passing through the rift, did you sense the presence of a mighty Pokémon – not a Pokémon like you, but a godlike one?" To this, Sylveon shook his head no. He's also uncertain as to what this rift is. The other woman also mentioned his trainer fell from the sky. That never happened to him at all.
As for Mai, her heart skips a beat. Through her questioning, Akari just admitted to having met the Almighty Sinnoh. It's a revelation that only solidifies her clan's need to obtain this young woman for themselves. She's anxious to inform Adaman of such.
Akari asks her next question. "How long have you been on your own? A week?" It's a no. "Two weeks?" Another no. "Three?" A nod this time. "You've been on your own for three weeks?" Another nod. "In Hisui, correct." Yet another nod.
Akari sighs. "How terrible. I'm so sorry that happened to you." Sylveon doesn't respond, instead choosing to move in closer to embrace his trainer again. This wild place has been brutal to him, much more than Sinnoh ever had. He hadn't liked being a wild Pokémon then, and he really didn't like it this time. In fact, it was far worse. There were these larger-than-life Pokémon wandering around with overly aggressive dispositions. One in particular – a Stantler – tried to kill him this morning by stomping him in the ground.
Munchlax approaches, patting Sylveon on that back to comfort him. "Muuun." Mai has always been there for him but that doesn't mean he'd never experienced a loss. At least Sylveon can see this loved one again. It's rather bittersweet for him.
Akari pets Munchlax on the head. "You're a sweety for being so kind." Munchlax leans into it, loving the affection.
"I think," Mai begins slowly. "There's nothing more that can be said or done about this situation." She finds herself feeling a little jealous that Munchlax is connecting so easily with another. This normally isn't the case. Usually, he's more aloof when it comes to other people.
"I suppose your right." Akari stands, leaving Sylveon leaning against her legs. Munchlax wonders back to Mai's side, causing the other woman to smile down at him. Akari continues, "I probably should focus on that request of yours."
"Yes, you're right," Mai says. There's still some distance from here to their destination after all.
The hike up the large hillside wasn't overly eventful. Akari was able to capture some Pokémon along the way: Geodude, Buizel, Zubat, Burmy, Kricketot, Stantler. She caught most with the back strike technique. Buizel required a battle, in which she used Shinx. The little lion cub put the twin tailed otter down quickly.
It was as they were nearing Deertrack Heights that Mai began to speak. "I'm curious about the world beyond the rift. What is it like?"
Akari should have expected this question. Rei and Laventon wanted to ask as well but ultimately did not. She had seen the questions in their eyes that did not reach their lips. It had been a relief but now Mai had finally asked. She'll need to be careful with her answers. "It's different," she admits. "Not as wild and free as this place."
Mai is dissatisfied with the vague answer. "What do you mean by not as wild and free?"
Akari thinks for a moment. "It's complicated to explain in terms that would make it easy to comprehend."
A frown appears on Mai's face. "Do you find me daft then?"
"NO!" Akari is alarmed. She hadn't meant to give Mai that impression. "No, please don't think that. It's just the differences between Hisui and where I'm from are HUGE!" She holds her arms out wide to help describe her point. "I mean, picture this: a village like Jubilife, but it's a hundred times bigger. Imagine buildings so tall that the roofs are hidden by clouds or carts that propel themselves without a Pokémon's help."
Mai's brow furrows. She's trying her hardest to picture it. "These things are…real?" It sounds like elements of some crazy fairy tale told to children.
Akari nods. "In my world, they are." It seemed safer to state that she's from another world rather than the future. If the wrong person learned of her true origins, it could lead to them trying to exploit her for some nefarious reason. She doubted Mai would do this, but she would undoubtedly tell her clan leader and he may tell others and so on. It's a risk she can't take.
"Another world." Mai is very interested. "What else can you tell me?"
"Lots of things," Akari admits. "But I just don't think I should."
"Why?" Mai inquires.
"It's complicated," Akari begins. "Many of the things in my world wouldn't even begin to make sense to you unless you saw them in person. I also worry about people's reactions to the truth. Some may think I'm not right in the head or something of the sort. I'm already looked at with great suspicion."
"Yes, I recall." Mai states. She has a hint of irritation in her voice. "I find them very foolish."
Akari smiles kindly. "I appreciate the support."
Mai returns the smile. "Consider it friendship."
"Really?" Akari feels elated. Mai is her first official friend in Hisui.
"Yes," Mai says. Even without Adaman's desire for it, she's certain she would have attempted a friendship with Akari anyway. "You appear to be a good person."
The compliment makes Akari feel a little bashful. "Thank you."
By this time, they'd reached Deertrack Heights. It is a small clearing, but there are some remnants of old ruins around the area and an old stone feeding trough. In the future, this place is forbidden to outsiders of the Dimond Clan. Akari had never asked why, or truly cared. Now that she is here, she's curious as to why. However, the sound of heavy footsteps running up the path behind her distracts her from her inner musings.
Mai's expression suggests that she's once again feeling some annoyance. "Oh? So even the Professor decides to join us?" It sounded rather sarcastic.
Akari frowns at her. Fortunately, Laventon hadn't heard her over his huffing breaths. She's a little concerned. "Are you okay?"
Laventon nods, looking overly excited. He held up his camera. He then huffs out, "Whew… Thank goodness… I got here in time…" It's obvious he's not used to running.
"Here." Akari hands over her water skin. "This should help."
"Ah!" Laventon takes it gratefully, swallowing several large gulps. He hands it back to her when finished. "Thank you, my dear girl."
Akari places the water skin back on her belt. "So, what had you chasing us all the way out here? Research?" She recalled how he'd held up his camera when he showed up.
"That's right!" Laventon smiles brightly. "As a Pokémon researcher, I could hardly miss out on a chance to observe an alpha, now, could I? After all, I missed your stunning performance against an alpha Rufflet."
Akari can't help the smile that graces her lips. Laventon is so passionate about his work. "I don't mind if you watch, although I think it should be Mai's decision ultimately." She looks at the older woman.
Mai lets out a sigh. "It's fine as long as you stay out of the way." She points at a spot that's rather far but still has a great view of the clearing. "Stand over there."
Laventon smiles at Mai, pleased. "I will and thank you!" He bows in gratitude then walks over to where he was instructed.
Mai ignores him, turning to look out across the tribute area. There's evidence of the troublemaker all around, mostly near the feeding trough where this rude bug steals Wyrdeer's offerings. "As you already know, this is Deertrack Heights. This place is considered sacred ground to those of the Dimond Clan. It's also where I've long come to pay tribute to a special Pokémon – a Pokémon descended from one of those ancients blessed by the Almighty Sinnoh." She sounds very proud of her role regarding this.
A loud screech is suddenly heard near the backside of the clearing. There's a large red bug Pokémon messing around, digging in the dirt. It's a Kricketune. These Pokémon, although beautiful sounding, can be absolute pests. No doubt, this one has made a nuisance of itself. "I'm going to assume this isn't the Pokémon you pay tribute too."
Mai inclines her head in agreement. "Indeed, that's not it. He's the troublemaker."
"Figured as much." Akari frowns. The Kricketune is leaving large holes where he's finished tilling the ground.
Mai crosses her arms, irritated to see this Pokémon disrespecting Wyrdeer's home. "He's always coming here, disturbing the peace with his racket and stealing the tributes I prepare."
Kricketune cries out again, making a playful motion of come and get me. He appears to know why they're there. It's clear that he isn't threatened or even bothered by their presence.
An angry scowl appears on Mai's lips. "Akari, drive that interloper from this place."
Akari reaches into her satchel, grabbing the Pokéball that contains Growlithe. He's the perfect matchup for a Kricketune, giving him all the advantages. "You can consider it done." She tosses Growlithe's ball, the puppy appearing in front of the Kricketune. He growls as the bug waves at him as if to mock the puppy. It's deplorable behavior.
Sylveon also finds this Kricketune attitude distasteful as well. He hisses in displeasure. "Syl."
"Stand down, Sylveon." Akari is stern. "This isn't your fight. Besides, I want you to rest a little bit and put on weight before you battle again." Sylveon huffs unhappily but listens.
Laventon calls out from the sidelines. "Be careful, Akari. Size is a potent weapon in and of itself."
Akari nods, indicating she heard him. He's right after all; bigger Pokémon hit a lot harder. "Growlithe, let's kick this off with a Flame Charge!"
"Ruff!" Growlithe responds, rushing forward eagerly, flames erupting around his body. He doesn't like to be teased.
Kricketune is cocky, standing his ground instead of dodging. Growlithe slams into him, the fire typing of the attack burning the bug badly. Kricketune screeches as he's knocked backwards towards the ridge.
Akari doesn't want to give their opponent the chance to recover. "Growlithe, use Rockslide!"
"Ruff! Ruff!" Growlithe slams himself into the ridge near Kricketune, his internal power rippling through the rocks residing there. The effect is immediate, creating a rockslide that's racing towards Kricketune who's still trying to recover from the previous hit. It hits him head on, knocking him to the ground. He's now weakened considerably.
Akari readies a Pokéball, tossing it at Kricketune who's struggling to get back up. The aim is true, popping the bug on the side before pulling him inside. The ball wriggles, then clicks indicating capture. This battle was a lot easier than expected, most likely due to Kricketune's cocky attitude. It doesn't seem to matter to her spectators.
Laventon shouts, "Jolly good show!"
Mai is pleased as well. Akari not only defeated her in battle but captured an alpha. It's on the weaker side, but it's still very noteworthy. Akari has taken her first steps to being accepted by the Dimond Clan when the time comes. "You really are an impressive one, aren't you?" She smiles proudly. "Seeing someone best an alpha like that; it truly reminds me of the legendary hero of old."
Akari blushes. "I'm no where near as talented as that." She's heard of the great hero. According to legend, they were one of the best battlers to ever roam this land.
Mai shakes her head. "You battled very well. In fact, you made that battle look terribly easy."
"Ruff!" Growlithe's bark catches Akari's attention. He's holding Kricketune's Pokéball in his mouth, dropping it into his trainer's hand when she holds it out to him. Growlithe then turns his attention towards Sylveon, looking him over. He can sense the power of this newcomer.
"Wyeeeeeeer!"
A loud bellowing cry echoes through the clearing. It startles Akari, Sylveon and Growlithe, causing them all to jump slightly. Even Laventon is surprised, "Wh-what in the world?!" Only Mai is unbothered by the cry. She looks up towards a massive ridge that overhangs the clearing. There's a Pokémon up there – a majestic white deer with golden antlers peering down at them. He looks extremely regal and wise.
Mai bows, showing respect to the Pokémon. She then returns to a standing position, announcing, "It's the great Wyrdeer!"
"A Wyrdeer…" Akari has heard of this Pokémon – most have. However, it went extinct around this time in history. It's rumored that Stantler only evolves when the species is threatened. This is no longer the case in modern Sinnoh where their numbers have exploded. The last Wyrdeer died a hundred and fifty yeas before she was born.
Laventon wandered over to Akari, looking up at Wyrdeer as well. "He's magnificent."
Mai looks at the professor. Perhaps she's misjudged him if he finds Wyrdeer so enduring. "He's one of the esteemed nobles of the Dimond clan." She sounds proud.
Wyrdeer is on the move, scaling the steep side of the ridge. The movements of the deer are elegant as he gracefully steps from rock to rock, his footing is strong and sturdy. When he reaches the bottom of the ridge, he looks at Akari with interest. He likes her, having watched her battle as one with Growlithe. She'll truly make a good mate for Adaman, giving him strong offspring that will lead the clan into prosperity. He knew of the leader's desire to mate with her as Mai had whispered it to him only that morning.
Wyrdeer approaches, keeping a watchful eye on Growlithe who is eyeing him back. In the natural world, these puppies along with their evolutions, Arcanine, hunt Stantler. He'd been hunted himself, only to be protected by Mai and several other members of the Dimond Clan. It was a terrifying moment, but he won't let it stop him. He stops before Akari, looking at her with gentle eyes.
Mai walks up, placing her hand on his neck. "He looks upon you with kindness, Akari."
Akari smiles. "It's nice to meet you." She reaches up, placing her hand on Wyrdeer's soft nose. He leans his head down, allowing her to scratch his forehead then between his antlers. It felt wonderful but he didn't linger. He turns and walks away as if nothing had happened.
Mai, used to his ways, knows that the interaction had been good. "I'd say the great Wyrdeer has taken a liking to you. That is fortunate."
"Is it?" Akari can't imagine how. She's not a member of the Dimond Clan.
Mai shakes her head, disagreeing. "He is an esteemed Pokémon that can dash across the expanses of Hisui while bearing a human on his back – a human who he deems worthy, at least. He's truly a blessing to us all."
Akari considers this. "I bet you ride him all the time, don't you Mai?" She used to ride a Rapidash when she was younger. It does make things a lot easier when traveling across large distances. This time around though, she'll probably ride on an Arcanine – well, after Growlithe evolves that is.
Mai couldn't believe how dense Akari is being right now. The poor girl totally missed the hint she'd been implying about her being able to ride Wyrdeer herself. Laventon had as well, as he states, "Remarkable! Truly outstanding stuff! A Pokémon letting someone ride on it! Why, it's just like the Ride Pokémon of Alola."
Akari's face lights up as she recalls a fond memory. "Oh, I had forgotten about them. The Islanders train them specifically to carry anyone who needs help getting somewhere." She then smiles happily. "I think riding on Charizard's back was the greatest. Flying high in the sky like that. There's nothing like else like it in the world."
Laventon looks very surprised. "You truly know of Alola? You're more well-traveled than I realized."
Akari nods. "I've been to several regions, but Alola is a very special place to me. It's also such a romantic place. I could so see spending my wedding night there if I ever got married."
Laventon nods. "Oh, yes, I must agree. My own wife had stated that she felt the same way." He then laughs. "But we were already married by that time, so we settled for a romantic dinner by the ocean. Truly stunning it was!"
"You're married?" Akari inquires. "Is she here in Jubilife?"
Laventon nods. "That she is, along with our two sons." He smiles proudly. "I would never leave my family behind if I can help it. They're my entire world after all."
"How sweet." Akari felt envious. Mai as well. To both, having a man love you unconditionally is a wonderful dream.
"Mun?" The soft call of Munchlax pulls Mai's attention towards him. He's looking down the path leading up to Deertrack Heights. Mai follows his line of sight, noticing Rei running towards them.
"Professor! Akari!" Rei is calling out, catching the attention of his fellow companions from Galaxy Team. Laventon smiles as he turns to great Rei. Akari does the same. Rei asks, "I take it things went smoothly?" He'd just taken the last few steps required to reach his colleges.
"Yes, mission accomplished," Akari answers. She then looks down at Rei's feet. Pikachu is beside him, looking up at her happily. "I'm so glad you let him run with you!"
"Pika!" Pikachu nods his head in agreement. It's very nice to be let out of his Pokéball to run free like this. He hopes his trainer will allow it more often.
Rei smiles at his Pokémon. "I was very enjoyable for me to have him with me." He then looks at Mai with a sullen yet serious expression. It's obvious that he's still upset by her earlier hostilities. She could care less. Everything she'd said about Galaxy Team was true. Rei says wearily, "I'm here on Captain Cyllene's orders. She said we'd be able to set up a base camp here once Akari took care of the request."
Mai hates this. She really does. Laventon notices, stating, "Ah, about that. I know this was a joint decision by Adaman and the commander, but still – is it truly fine for us to set up more base camps like this?" He looks around nervously. "This place is scared to the Dimond Clan isn't it?"
Mai lets out a sigh. "Indeed, it is." She was against the expansion of base camps. Adaman didn't like the idea either. Then the Galaxy Team's commander asked to place one here on Deertrack Heights. Adaman had been furious and didn't hide it in the least. However, Akari is now wondering this land, and he wanted her to have a few more safe havens to rest in. It's why he finally approved of the project. Of course, Galaxy Team is completely unaware of this. Adaman suddenly bowing a knee to their wishes would have their commander scratching his head.
Akari looks towards Mai, an obvious question in her eyes. She remembered Mai's hostilities as well. No doubt, she's curious about the situation as well. Mai tries to come up with a believable excuse quickly. It ends up being decent enough. She states, "The Hisui region is a land created by the Almighty Sinnoh for the sake of its Pokémon. If your goal is to coexist and thrive together with the Pokémon, then I imagine you should also be allowed to use this land."
Laventon bows, as does Rei. "Thank you," they say in unison. Rei then adds, "This place will always be respected."
"See that it does." Mai's tone is stern. "The great Wyrdeer has taken a liking to Akari as well. This is a good sign; but be warned. If you betray Adaman's trust, the consequences will be dire, I assure you."
"Don't worry," Laventon says. "We'll do everything we can to keep learning about Pokémon. I'll personally educate anyone around me who will listen." He sounds so earnest.
Mai nods. This man is starting to win her over. He truly is a kind soul living among ignorant fools. Akari is very much the same. Mai turned to look at her, a kind smile on her face. "You have my thanks for what you did today. I'll make sure our clan leader will hear of how you aided us."
Akari shakes her head. "That's not necessary. I was happy to help a friend in need."
Mai bows to show her gratitude. "I'll be coming by soon to show my clan's appreciation with a proper reward as soon as I can."
"Oh, please, don't!" Akari feels like this is too much. Mai shouldn't go out of her way to thank her. "I didn't do this for any kind of reward."
"I know," Mai says. "But you're still getting one." She turns to leaves. "I see you in a few days Akari. Until then, may Almighty Sinnoh keep you safe."
