Bella

3 weeks later

It's been three and a half weeks since I became Jacob's Imprint. Three weeks since the tribe council asked me to take a DNA test to see if I were somehow carrying the DNA of a Quileute somewhere in my heritage. I mean I guess it is possible, but... It just seemed impossible... But now, here I stand, holding the envelope with my complete DNA makeup... and I can't even bear to open it and look.

"Bells, what are you scared of?" Jacob asked me, rubbing my back slowly and comfortingly.

"I mean, this could explain some things... Why we imprinted, why my dad couldn't bring himself to leave Forks even when my mom wanted to... why I never really felt at home until I moved here... But it would also open a lot of questions... Where do I come from? Who in the tribe am I related to? Why didn't my grandparents ever even hint at our heritage... Just so many questions."

"They may not have known. I mean, my dad looked in the Book of Heritage himself. There was no mention of anyone marrying outside of the tribe and leaving... Most likely, someone got a girl pregnant and either she didn't tell him and ran off... or he abandoned her... Either way, it doesn't matter. What matters most is that you have the answer to a lot of questions right there in your hands."

"I guess that's true." I take a deep breath and then turn the envelope over in my hands, "Well, here goes nothing."

I open the envelope and pull out a packet of papers.

Dear Miss. Isabella Marie Swan,

Thank you for your DNA submission. The DNA sample included has been examined and the results are as follows:

I quickly read through the nationalities listed... Italian... Anglo-Saxon... French... Then at the very bottom...

0.195% Native American- Quileute

My head snaps up to look at Jacob and my jaw drops.

"What? What does it say?"

I hand Jacob the letter, "It says I am Quileute... .195%!" I watch as Jacob's eyes dart across the page as he reads.

When he reaches the bottom of the letter, he flips the page over, "Bella..."

"What? What's wrong?"

He begins to read from the paper, "'Familial matches- Sam Uley and Embry Call.' This means you are a direct descendant of the Taha Aki line!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa... I am related to Sam and Embry!?"

"Yeah, distant relation, but still related. There are other names here too, but those are the two you would know and recognize."

"Does that mean I am related to you?"

"Well, I am of the Taha Aki line, but it doesn't list me as one of your familial matches, so no. No direct relation."

I drop down to sit on the edge of my bed and Jacob hands me the paper so I can see it for myself, and sure enough there it is. Nestled between a list of names I don't recognize, there are the names... Sam Uley, Levi Uley, Thomas Uley Jr., Joshua Uley, Embry Call, Tiffany Call. "Wow... I just- wow."

"We have to notify the council as soon as possible. They asked us to tell them as soon as we heard something..."

He turns to grab his phone and keys just as something pops into my head, "Hey wait a minute," I grab Jake's arm to stop him. "Edward told me that he couldn't hear my thoughts. And he really couldn't hear Charlie's thoughts either... he just got emotions. But he was able to hear my mom's thoughts clear as day... Do you think our heritage could have something to do with this? A kind of ancestorial mental protection?"

"I mean, I guess it could be possible. I didn't know he couldn't hear your thoughts though. That is rather... interesting." Suddenly my mind is swirling with questions.

I stand up, grab my jacket and take a deep breath, "Well, I guess we better go to the council with all of this." *Ugh, I so don't want to face the council*

"You know, this could entitle your dad to move onto the Rez... he is family afterall..."

"Yeah... but the secret..."

"Technically, we aren't supposed to tell people outside of the tribe... but since he is a direct descendant of Taha Aki, and you are a wolf... he has a right to know..."

"Is it possible that he has the gene?"

"I mean I guess it's possible, but since he never turned, it's improbable."

"But what about me? I turned..."

"Yeah, but only after the imprint. That meant you had the Spirit of the Wolf bestowed on you... you weren't born a shifter."

"Hmm... Ok." Jake takes my hand and we go downstairs just as I hear the tires of Charlie's cruiser on the gravel as he pulls into the driveway. Quickly, I fold up the letter and stuff it in the backpack by the door.

"Well hey Jake, Bells... You guys heading somewhere?"

I zip up my backpack and swing it onto my back, "Yeah, we are just heading to Jake's house. I am helping him and a few of the guys with some finals stuff... Apparently some of them have fallen behind..." I shoot Jake a quick "back me up here" look.

"Oh, yeah. For... uh... Biology... way behind..." Jake stammers as he slips his feet into his shoes.

"Oh, ok. Well... I was going to see if you wanted to do something for dinner, Bella, but I guess you have other plans."

"There's some leftovers in the fridge from last night's chicken spaghetti. You can do that if you want. I will probably get some pizza or something. We always seem to do that during a... uh... study session."

"Ok, well, have a good time."

Jake grabs my hand and we practically run out of the house.

"Really Jake? Biology? Me? That's about as believable as me helping you with Trig. English... that's my superpower." I laugh as he opens the door and jumps in the truck with me.

"I'm sorry... In that moment, I completely spaced." He chuckles as I start the engine.

"Jeez, and I thought I was a bad liar! He probably saw right through that!"

"Oh yeah, he probably thinks we are going to have sex or something."

"Jake! Oh my god! No! If he thought that, we would never have been let out of the house. He would have told us to call the guys and bring them here... then we really would have had to study... biology... in the living room.. with him sitting right there, in his chair, drinking a beer."

The rest of the ride, we are talking, joking and laughing... but I can't help having a pit in my stomach.
