Eric Carter begins setting up a temporary base at Kim and Jamal's house. It has occurred to him that it might be more believable for them to reach out to other possible terrorists from here, rather than from CTU. They've already had one witness murdered at CTU, can't take the chance that some other spotters might be watching. Audrey has agreed to help, but she is still suspicious of George Mason's motives, whether he or others might be working with the terrorists.

President Allen is working from the Oval Office, getting status updates from her staff.

.

Gardner: The evacuation from Afghanistan is picking up momentum. It might actually be completed on schedule.

Allen: And what about the interrogation of Obaidullah?

Gardner: Hekmetyar says he still hasn't released any details about future attacks. If he did know anything, it's possible reverend Adam has already changed plans.

Allen: Unfortunately that is probably true. What has Suvarov done since he was sworn in?

Gardner: His military is on alert. Our sources say they are preparing for defense, should we attack their bases.

Allen: Our military is in the same position, but they aren't preparing for an attack?

Gardner: Not yet. However he is making it clear to certain elements that they will not back down if threatened.

Keaton: He's just saying that to appease the hardliners. I don't believe that Suvarov is a danger to us unless we make ourselves a threat to him. If we back off it will die down.

Allen: Maybe. We won't attack first but we will be ready if they attack first.

Keaton: Understood madam president.

From his office Dimitri watches Russian State Media's coverage. There are makeshift memorials all over Russia for fallen leader Vladimir Putin. The broadcasters are repeating the theory that Ukrainian seperatists, possibly even Zelensky himself, was involved in this assasination, although Zelensky himself denies this. They also repeat Suvarov's promise to bring those responsible to justice. Then Dimitri gets a call from Ira Gaines.

.

Dimitri: Why are you calling now?

Gaines: I thought you'd want to know, Jack Bauer, he's taken Walker's daughter hostage.

Dimitri: This complicates matters. Would he betray our plan to save her life?

Gaines: I don't know. But even if he con fesses it wouldn't be admissable. My judicial calls it "Fruit of a poisonous tree."

Dimitri: I am not an expert on the American judicial system, but I assure you that if Suvarov learns of this, he will not be such a stickler for reasonable doubt.

Gaines: I'll speak to Walker and make certain he doesn't talk.

Dimitri: For both our sakes, you had better.

Agent Hayes of the Secret Service enters the Oval Office. The look on his face says that the news is not good.

.

Allen: What is it?

Hayes: D.C. police found a body, someone who jumped off a building.

Allen: Was it, Horace?

Hayes: Yes, he was identified as your son. I'm sorry madam president, he's dead.
