Chapter 747: Congressional Office Building

Thursday, March 23rd, Afternoon

The night was coming quickly, as the sun was starting to duck down over the skyline of Washington, DC. She looked out of the bulletproof glass and over the Capitol Complex to the orange-reflected light of the Capitol Reflecting Pond. She looked at her watch and sighed, turning away from the window. The day was almost over, and so was her week in the District as she looked at her bags sitting over by the office door. Shifting her gaze from her bags to her hand, she could see it shaking. It was going to be a big weekend for her.

Izzy sighed and leaned back, looking at the ceiling. That was when the phone on her desk rang. Izzy reached over and picked it up.

"Yes, Dan?" Izzy asked.

"I have ADIC for New York on the phone for you," Dan said.

"Which ADIC?" Izzy asked.

"Part of the alphabet," Dan said.

"Which part?" Izzy asked.

"Didn't say," Dan said.

Izzy sighed and sat up straight. "Put them on," she said.

"Yes, Ma'am," Dan said and disconnected.

Izzy sat up and shook her head. This was never good; she waited for the phone to ring again. When it did, she picked up the phone.

"Representative Isabella Scott speaking," Izzy said.

"Yes, Congresswoman Scott, this is Robert Smith, the ADIC for New York," he said.

Izzy nodded, turned to her computer, and checked the government index. When the results popped up, she nodded and sent a message to Kari and one of her contacts.

"How may I help you, Assistant Director?" Izzy asked.

"I'm here to help you," he said.

"Oh, really," Izzy said.

"Yes," he said.

Izzy looked to the messenger and saw Kari had responded with a positive as her answer. Nodding, Izzy focused on the phone call.

"So, Director, how are you going to help me?" Izzy asked.

"This is a courtesy call," he said.

"Okay," Izzy said.

"You have a personal relationship with Fallon Stafford?" he asked.

"Yes, we consider ourselves sisters, been friends for years; her dad was engaged to my mom before he was murdered; we share a sister," Izzy said.

"Very well," he said.

"What has or is happening to Fallon, Director?" Izzy asked.

"Well, Congresswoman, a warrant is going to be issued and served next week at the Stafford Foundation in New York, and Ms. Stafford is on the list," he said.

"What did Fallon do to get in trouble?" Izzy asked.

"I can't comment on an active investigation," he said.

"Director, why are you leaking this to me?" Izzy asked.

"Because I was asked to by my director," he said.

"Why would he do this?" Izzy asked.

"The grace and honor of your position, Congresswoman," he said.

"Now you're not worried that I won't rat you out?" Izzy asked.

"We're not worried about this, Congresswoman," he said.

"So, when is this happening next week?" Izzy asked.

"I am not at liberty to say," he said.

Izzy nodded, "Thank you, is there anything else?" she asked.

"No, Congresswoman," he said.

"Thank you again, Director," Izzy said.

"You're welcome, Congresswoman," he said, disconnecting the phone.

Izzy put the phone down and turned to face the window. Izzy crossed her arms across her chest, bowed her head, closed her eyes, and pinched the bridge of her nose. For a few moments, she took a few deep breaths and finally sat up and turned back to face her desk.

"Skye!" Izzy yelled.

Skye Gregory appeared at the door. "Yes, Congresswoman?" Skye asked, using the formal office address.

"Is Kari here?" Izzy asked.

"No," Skye said.

"Okay, get in here, and we're going to need to get her on this," Izzy said.

Skye stepped into Izzy's office and closed the door. "What's wrong, Iz?" she asked.

"That was the Assistant Director in Charge for New York," Izzy said.

"Which agency?" Skye asked.

"One you don't want to be on their radar," Izzy said.

"That's a large chunk of the alphabet," Skye said.

"Yeah, well, they are getting a warrant to arrest for Fallon," Izzy said.

Skye shook her head, "Oh my god, Izzy, can't you do something about that?" she asked.

Izzy shook her head, "No, that was a courtesy call to let me know they are doing it," she said.

"Why?" Skye asked.

"Probably so I can get ready for the press," Izzy said.

"So, what do we do?" Skye asked.

"Well, it will happen sometime next week, so I want to be ready for Monday," Izzy said.

"What do we want?" Skye asked.

"I want a press release ready to go, just in case, and where's Kari?" Izzy asked.

Skye shrugged, "You know, I don't know, she's off doing what Kari does," she said.

Izzy nodded, "I want her brought in and prepared for damage control," she said.

Skye nodded, "But Fallon is your sister," she said.

Izzy nodded, "I know, and I trust she knows what she's doing, but it is better to be prepared," she said.

Skye nodded, "So, what do you need?" she asked.

Izzy took in a deep breath and let it out. "I don't know, I just want to be ready," she said.

Skye nodded, "Do you want me to stay back here this weekend?" she asked.

Izzy shook her head, "No, I need you to work with the North Carolina team. Kari can run the damage control up here," she said.

Skye nodded, "I'll get Kari to come in for a brief," she said.

Izzy nodded, "Good, and let's get some dinner here before we head to the airport," she said.

Skye nodded, "You want Kari in on that dinner?" she asked.

"Yes," Izzy said, "We can talk over this mess."

"Okay," Skye said and left the office.

Izzy sighed and turned to face the window and the darkening District Sky. She shook her head, closed her eyes, and squeezed the bridge of her nose. This sucks, was all she could think.
