[a/n]Actually we could take the trope from last time a little deeper. See, actually Radcliffe wrote the HP fanfic inserting himself as Harry's Danny Drew ;] in the TNG story.
Harry Does Different CDXCVI
Pureblood?
Bit of blood from each class… who's who?
"I would like to see us mix things up a bit, this class." Professor Lupin announced as he started "Mr. Malfoy always partnering with Mr. Crabbe, for instance. Or some combination of Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley or Miss Granger. Let's team Miss Granger with Mr. Goyle, ….several pairings later….. Mr. Potter you work with Mr. Malfoy ….a couple more then… Miss Zabini and Mr. Weasley, Miss Patil with Miss Greengrass."
The blond Slytherin glared and all but spat "Potter! Well at least it's not the Mudblood."
"You should be aware by now, Mr. Malfoy, we professors have excellent hearing. And I stand out even among my colleagues in that regard." Said Lupin "And that will be twenty points from Slytherin and a detention with Mr. Filch. A repeat offense in my class will see the punishment escalate. Moving on - - -"
Harry snarled at his nemesis "You're not half the wizard Hermione is!" Then looking around at the sudden giggles, rolled his eyes "Oh you lot know what I mean! Sorry Professor. He's been insulting her with that since we met. Pureblood, dirty blood. He can't even prove it by any real means. And Hermione certainly doesn't have any mud in her blood. That's all tripe."
"It is self-evident Potter. Perhaps her lot is superior to Muggles, but they cannot approach a Pureblood in any quality." Draco spoke with total assurance.
Hermione had grown a thick skin to the insult and just retorted "Any time you would like to compare GPAs, Malfoy." Ron high-fived her.
"Now now, back to classwork." Lupin chided the students generally.
But Harry had a new thought "Sir, seems to me there's a fairly easy way to prove it. At least, I know of a Muggle way. Blood tests. Take some from different people and see if there's any differences. Madam Pomfrey must have something."
"An interesting hypothesis, Mr. Potter. Although one that cannot be handled within the confines of today's lesson. If we can resume?" the teacher got back to the plan for the day.

At breakfast two days later Dumbledore spoke briefly "Before we begin our weekend Madam Pomfrey has a brief announcement."
"With the kind permission of the Headmaster, I would like to ask for volunteers for a small experiment." The mediwitch began, then explained "It was recently proposed that there is a connection between what is in a person's blood and their magical ability. What I am asking for is, with parental approval, any student willing donate a small sample of his or her blood. I will take no sample from anyone without a signed form and no one but me will know who donated which sample. St. Mungo's Hospital will then perform every test known and we will see what we learn. There is no danger to any participant and nothing but a momentary pinch of discomfort."
Dumbledore stood at the end of the speech and there were a few pops at the end of the hall "Each table has a stack of forms as you depart. This is, as Madam Pomfrey stated, entirely voluntary. You need not even make the request of your parents, thank you. Now, let the feast begin."

"Boys and girls, we have some fascinating preliminary results to share." Madam Pomfrey spoke from her seat at the Head Table without prior introduction "As you may, or may not, have guessed this exercise began with a discussion in Professor Lupin's class. An experiment never done before, their potions masters were asked if they could, by any means, tell the difference between any sample being from a Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn."
Professor Snape looked displeased "And such an exercise did not involve myself as the Potion Master here."
"There was no insult intended, Severus." Replied the Mediwitch without acknowledging the rancor "Simply ensuring a double-blind process for the sake of independent analysis."
He grimaced and muttered "I am familiar with investigative procedure."
"The scope of this is still expanding" she went on, even disregarding the scowl of the Headmaster "But what has been learned so far is that we all produce a substance that flows in our blood. Whether it is the source of magic, or just a conduit to access magic we do not know. Researchers in St. Mungo's and the Department of Ministries are very excited."
Draco stood up and, politely enough for him, wanted to know "Madam, I thought this would prove Pureblood superiority over lesser kinds."
"The answer is completely inconclusive there, Mr. Malfoy." Poppy's tone was brittle "There may be value in comparing our preliminary data to school records, if that is acceptable to pupils and their parents. I know, in a general sort of way, who the top students are. But what I would need is more than I usually access."
The Headmaster put in "Exceedingly interesting and certainly a useful intellectual exercise. The administration will be generally supportive. Of course, participation is not going to be compelled. Any other tidbits, Poppy?"
"Well there is, as with any new discovery, some desire to name this substance." Then the mediwitch smirked "THAT was an epic understatement."
Here, Remus found himself unable to resist a bit of a prank "If I may suggest? We submit the names of the students whose …ahh, discussion in my class… kicked off the project. Miss Granger and Misters Potter and Malfoy were engaged in a lively debate on the subject, from which came the blood test suggestion? Something along the lines of Dramionepottpentum, perhaps?"
No one in the Great Hall quite knew what to think of the idea. Least of all, the three named contributors.
