Notes: A week late yes... after what happened last week I feel bad... but I had to make sure this chapter was right. and I still don't know if it's perfect. But... I try my best!
Enjoy!
Fukkataro General Hospital
Some people say there is no such thing as coincidences, when two different things just so happen to occur at the same time. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Sometimes, it happens when two massive events can happen simultaneously, making for a day that just couldn't seem to get any worse than it already was. And a day like that was today.
Eighty kilometers away from Mount Fuji, Recovery Girl walked through the hospital halls in Fukkataro General. Her head hung low as her mood was not in the best place, especially with what had just happened this morning. The reason she was here and not at UA was because of the call she had received earlier, having been summoned here when an important mission had just been completed that morning.
The raid on the Shie Hassaiki compound.
Several teams of heroes had come together to capture the leader of the Yakuza, the criminal leader Overhaul. He had been developing a quirk erasing bullet, one that he derived from the torture and experimentation on a young girl and her rewinding quirk. The team also included the big three and several students from UA class 1-A, and their teacher Aizawa. While they had successfully rescued the child Eri, and captured the organization members, there was many on the hero's side who were injured.
Aizawa himself was mildly injured, and some of the students like Kirishima and Tamaki had more severe damage to their bodies. Luckily, they weren't bad enough after her healing that they would require more than two days in the hospital. The one third year student Mirio however, while making through his injuries, was struck with a completed version of the quirk-erasing bullet… taking his quirk away permanently. But even he made it out better than the leader of the raid himself, Mirai Sasaki.
Otherwise known as Nighteye, All Might's former sidekick, and mentor to Mirio and Izuku.
The injuries Nighteye sustained from the battle were too severe, and even with the doctors and her healing quirk, he had passed away not long after arriving at the hospital. Walking into the waiting room, she found All Might himself, clutching his hands as he took in the loss of an old friend. Sitting next to him was Aizawa, the teacher too stubborn to sit in his hospital bed despite doctors' requests. The pair of them looked up to the short nurse approaching, both giving a quiet sigh as she came to a stop.
"How are you feeling?" she asked Aizawa.
"As good as I can be…" he answered as he shifted his shoulder, grunting at the treated stab wound on his back. "How's everyone else?"
"A Kirishima and Tamaki will need to be here for a few days, but nothing too severe. Most of the others would be fine to leave tomorrow but will be kept for another day until they are cleared," She took a breath and turned to Toshinori, the skinny man staring quietly at her. "Are you…?"
Sighing, Toshinori, rubbed his forehead for a moment before nodding. "I'll… I'll be fine. It's just a lot to take in at once." he gripped his knees and looked over to the 1-A teacher. "I'm just glad you were there to keep the kids safe."
Grunting, Aizawa rubbed his neck and leaned back in his chair. "I honestly didn't do anything. If anyone you want to thank, it's Midoriya. He was the one who brought down Overhaul and kept our casualties lower."
Both Toshinori and Recovery Girl glanced at each other for a moment, smiling internally hearing what he had done. As her phone vibrated in her pocket, she walked a few paces away and pulled it out. While she answered the call, Toshinori turned back to the teacher beside him. "The fact these kids experienced something like this; many heroes don't deal with situations this extreme."
"With the rise in activity from villains, it's what to be expected." Aizawa growled out, the stab he received making him frown. "The fact the league of villains were involved with this along with the Yakuza… and what they tried to do afterward shows how aggressive they are becoming."
Toshinori squeezed his fists in frustration, especially after what happened within the hour; it seemed several members of the league attacked the police transport carrying Overhaul towards Tartarus. Whether they were trying to break him out or kill him, they couldn't tell, but thankfully the hero Snatch was there to guard the police vehicles. After they were thwarted, the defeated Shigaraki and the others were forced to flee before backup arrived. He could only imagine what could've happened if they had been successful with whatever they were trying to do.
"Let's just keep that monster Overhaul in prison and away from anyone. After what you said he was doing to that child, he deserves to rot in prison."
"Where are they now?!"
Both of the teachers turned in surprise to the sudden shout from the elderly woman, her tone shocking both of them. As Recovery Girl turned around, the look on her face told both of them something horrible had happened.
"I have to get to Fujiyoshida now," She stated and began quickly walking down the hall. "Something has happened to Endeavor and his team."
"What?" Aizawa said as he stood up, knowing who was with him today. "What happened?!"
Recovery Girl stood still for a moment as she looked back at the two of them. "Something horrible."
Aizawa's eyes widened, gritting his teeth and walking after the nurse. "I'm coming too. The hell if they say I can't leave the hospital."
As the two quickly ran towards the exit, Toshinori felt his heart racing as he ran after them. He didn't know all the details, but he had heard how Endeavor had led a team of other heroes on a mission of his own… and several students had gone with them as well. "What's going on?! What happened to Endeavor and the others?!"
Same time: UA High school
Yawning, Mina leaned back in her seat as Ectoplasm led the class in their math assignment… well, whatever kids even remained. Nearly half the class was gone today, all off on their work studies while the others were stuck in the small class. "Why didn't we just skip school today…" She muttered to herself, glancing over her shoulder to the many empty seats behind.
Both Tenya and Shoto were thinking the same thing, glancing at each other at the large gap of vacant desks between them. Between Izuku's group and Katara's team, all the students that sat between the two of them were gone. After receiving texts from Katara the night before she had made it with the others to the city, they had been patiently waiting for her call when she was coming back to school.
Suddenly, the door to the classroom opened up, revealing Midnight coming inside. "Pardon the interruption, but I need to speak to Iida."
"Me?" Tenya tilted his head in confusion. "For what reason, ma'am?"
"Manual has contacted the school about you coming to work for him once more." she answered, turning to Shoto beside him. "And Todoroki, we need to go over some things for your special make-up classes for your license."
While Tenya gave a smile and stood up enthusiastically, Shoto sighed and followed him out of the classroom, leaving the few remaining students to pout in annoyment. Looking around to the dwindling kids he was teaching, Ectoplasm grunted and shook his head. "Fine… how about a movie to finish off the day?"
Outside the class, Tenya happily marched behind the teacher as they moved down the hall. "So Manual has chosen me to go and work under him once more, I see! That is splendid news!"
"Iida…" Midnight whispered, turning around and giving a grim look. "You aren't going to work studies. I needed you out of the class without causing concern with the others…" she looked to the other confused teen. "Both of you."
The pair of them sat confused for a moment before they instantly put together what was happening. "Miss Midnight… did…" Tenya muttered.
"Todoroki, your father had led a mission today… and he was seriously hurt in the battle." Midnight glanced at the taller teen, unsure how to say this. "And Iida… Katara…"
Meanwhile: The Iida household
Humming to herself, Madoka Iida vacuumed the floor as she made her way through the hall of her home. As she finished up, she noticed Tensei coming her way, smiling and shutting it off. "Finish up your calls?" she asked him.
"Yeah, seems like the agency has been doing well recently," Tensei answered as she put the vacuum away. "Apparently hearing about my surgery's success has really boosted their moral and they've been improving with their workload."
"Well, who wouldn't be excited for that," Madoka chuckled and walked towards the kitchen as Tensei rolled after her. "Just don't be too eager and hurt yourself before you're ready."
"It's not like I'm going to run, mother." Tensei chuckled as she offered him a glass of juice, nodding for one himself. "Tenya's been messaging me seeing if I'm ready to return to work anytime soon."
"Of course he's curious. I bet Katara is very excited as well," She smiled and handed the glass to him before sighing. "It was fun having another girl in the house for a while."
Giving a playful eye roll, Tensei took a drink before the phone in his pocket began to ring, pulling it out and not recognizing the number. "Hmm…" he sighed out and answered. "Hello?"
As she was putting the juice back in the fridge, Madoka jumped at the sound of shattering glass, turning back to see the broken shards beneath Tensei. Before she could ask what had happened, the look of horror on his face was enough to tell her something was very wrong. "What… what is it?"
"What the hell happened?!" Tensei's breath came in quickly, looking up to his mother in fear. "Mom, we have to get to Fujiyoshida now…" he immediately felt a bead of sweat fall down his face from what he was told. "Something has happened to Katara."
Fujiyoshida ER, forty five minutes later
Endeavor sat in the chair outside the operating room, his body encased in dozens of bandages and wraps. The bloody patch over his left eye was ready to be changed, but he refused to go back to his room despite the doctors demands. He got the bare minimum of work done on him to stop the bleeding, pushing the medical staff away as he hobbled his way to the most critical room in the hospital, his uncovered eye staring at the closed doors ahead of him.
As soon as they had arrived at the hospital, Katara was pulled out of his grasp and taken behind closed doors, where the team of doctors frantically went to work on the girl's battered body. And so far… no word had been made clear yet as to what her status was. He clenched his hands in frustration, his mind in complete shambles as he felt a sickening feeling rising in his chest.
"Endeavor!"
Turning to the call, Endeavor looked over to see the former number one hero running his direction along with Aizawa and Recovery Girl. Normally, Endeavor's rage rose several levels whenever he saw the former hero he was trying to surpass come his way, but now… he didn't even have the nerve or the energy to form a glare. "All Might…" he quietly said.
Coming to a stop, Toshinori eyes were wide in shock to the state of the flame hero, never seeing him in such a damaged state. After seeing the news clip of the battle between Endeavor and the nomu on the way here, he was even distraught when he learned of everything that had taken place. "What… what is… Where is everyone else?!" he asked, too flustered to focus on a single thing.
While she saw he would need treatment soon, Recovery Girl ran past Endeavor and pushed her way into the closed doors, leaving the three men alone in the hallway. Aizawa struggled to keep his demeanor calm, having already dealt with this mornings events. "Just what the hell happened today?" he growled out.
Endeavor stared at the angry teacher for several moments, unsure if could even come up with a response to make sense. He turned away and stared at the ground. "We… we thought we had them in our grasp. Everything seemed perfect for us…" he muttered out. "It all… it was…"
"I'm not asking about what you did, I heard enough about that on the way here," Aizawa said, his eyes narrowing at the hero. "I'm asking about what happened to my students… and what the fuck happened…"
"Aizawa…" Toshinori swallowed as he felt the teachers anger rising, stepping forward to Endeavor's side. "What's their conditions now? Have they said anything?"
Endeavor gave a slow shake of his head, staring down as he replayed the horrible images in his mind of what happened in the cavern. "No… they… they haven't."
Just seeing the pale face and hearing Endeavor's slow words was enough for Toshinori to see he was near ready to pass out as well, his eyes widening as the flame hero nearly fell to the side. "You need to get help as well. I'll call them and-
"I'm fine!" Endeavor snapped out, gritting his teeth and clenching his shaking fists. "I'm fine. I just… I…" he looked down to his trembling hands, panting in frustration. "I should've been there. I should've done something and-
Endeavor's words cut off as he collapsed against the wall, covering his mouth as he coughed out blood. Before he could fall to the ground, someone caught his arm and held him up. Wheezing out, he looked over in surprise to see Toshinori standing there, the first time he had ever been helped up by him. They stared for several moments before the former number one hero helped him to the chair on the side, seating him down and stepping back. "Please… get yourself treated."
The hall went silent as the two teachers sat with the flame hero as a doctor came in, prepping Endeavor to take him back to his room. As he stood up however, he froze when he saw the figure he saw down the hallway, his eyes widening in shock. "Sh-Shoto…"
Shoto was running down the hallway alongside Tenya and Midnight, his son's face filled with horror and terror. But the moment he noticed his injured father, shock was the first thing he felt seeing the normally strong man so battered… before anger overtook his face.
"Where is she? Where is Katara?!" Tenya shouted as he sprinted down the hall, gasping when he saw his teacher there. "Aizawa sensei!"
"Iida?" Aizawa said in confusion, seeing Midnight behind him. "You brought him here?"
Coming to a stop, Midnight nodded. "With how serious this sounded, Nezu said to have family come for support."
While that was the initial intention Midnight had for Shoto, she did not expect the sudden shift in the air as he turned to his father, utter rage filling his gaze. "How… How the hell did you let this happen?" he growled out.
Enji Todoroki stared at his son, mouth hanging slightly as he scowled back. "I didn't. It all happened when-
"You were supposed to protect her…" Shoto hissed, his clenched left fist igniting slightly in fury. "She was under your watch when this happened. How then did she end up here?!"
"Todoroki, he would never have let this happen on purpose!" Toshinori tried saying, but his words went unheard.
"How could you let her get hurt…" Shoto's fists trembled as he gritted his teeth. "What the hell were you doing?!"
Enji bit down as he glared at the ground, his own fist shaking in frustration. "They tricked us… we thought we had them where we wanted. But we fell into their trap and-
"And now she is hurt because you weren't there for her!" Shoto shouted, getting right into his fathers face. "I knew she should've never gone to work for you without me being there!"
"Todoroki!" Aizawa's hair stood up as his eyes glowed, "You had best to control that temper of yours. "
After a few moments of silence, the flames on Shoto's arms dissipated, leaving the teen panting in fury. The others including Tenya felt sweat falling down their face as the dual haired teen glared up at his father before turning away, panting as he stared daggers at the floor. "This… This is all on you. And you call yourself the number one hero now…"
The words said there hung in the air for what felt like minutes, causing Enji's heart to tighten in his chest. Seeing there was nothing else to be said, he slowly turned and hobbled after the doctor, going back towards his hospital room. As the tension hung in the air, Midnight was confused why Shoto even agreed to come if he had this tension with his father. Her answer however came when he turned back towards the teachers, his eyes now filled with pain and worry.
"I need to see Katara as well… please." he said, struggling to keep his breathing calm. "I need to know how she is."
It only took a second for the teachers to understand why, with Aizawa grunting and rubbing his head. "Your girlfriend will be fine, Todoroki. But I feel like you-
"Sir…" Tenya swallowed and stepped forward. "Despite it being for family… I… I request that Todoroki can join as well."
While the other two teachers smiled at the offer, Aizawa grunted and closed his eyes. "Fine. But I would consider controlling that temper."
As the teachers all turned to sit down and wait, Tenya and Shoto both glanced at each other, with Shoto giving a nod of appreciation. Turning to sit as well, they now could only imagine what was so bad to be summoned here.
Several hours later
As the day rolled on towards the evening, the feeling at the hospital had only gotten more grim. One by one, members involved in the raid were treated, but with so much happening at once, no news from the operating room had come forth. Tenya continued to pace back and forth in front of his parents, both of them sitting quietly in worry about what could be going on after they arrived. Several other groups of people were there as well, waiting for the news on their family members involved in the raid.
Leaning against the wall to the side was Shoto, who had barely moved as he stared at the floor. His hands hung at his sides as he was lost in his thoughts, being reminded of the last time she was seriously hurt. Even Tensei tried to ease the tension and try small talk with him, knowing he was the boy Katara liked. But Shoto just wasn't in the mood to try and engage in friendly banter. And while he had tried for himself, neither was Tensei.
Suddenly, the door slowly opened up, everyone in the lobby standing up at once to the sudden action. All their eyes focused on the group of doctors coming out, their breath coming in quick inhales to the blood on some of their robes. Sprinting forward, Tenya's heart was
Taking a breath, the lead doctor clenched his hands on the clipboard he had as he began. "Alright, now for those of you whose family were police officers, doctor Shiminara will take you and explain everything. For the heroes involved, doctor Morinuru will take you." As the crowd dispersed following those doctors into the back, he looked to see the Iida family and Shoto, along with Aizawa, Midnight and Toshinori left. "Is… this the only family here now?"
"Bakugo and Kendo's family are on their way. We had trouble contacting them for a small amount of time." Aizawa answered.
"Sir, what's happening? Is Katara alright?!" Tenya shouted out, feeling Tensei's hand reach up and grip his wrist.
"All of you, come with me," The doctor announced, turning and leading the group into the surgery room. As they made their way down the hallway, he flipped through the pages to the sheets before reading. "Well, we do have some news for the others. Bakugo suffered a shattered arm and multiple lacerations and piercings through his shoulders. He still should be able to return to school in a few days as well. Kendo is much the same, having multiple cracked ribs, lacerations, and a severe injury to her hand, but still will be in the clear to go back to school within three days."
While the teachers felt some relief to the news, the fact the other student wasn't mentioned made their worry rise. "And what about Katara?" Midnight asked.
As they came to the door at the end of the hall, they were met with Recovery Girl standing there, her head hanging low from exhaustion and her emotions. The look she had made Toshinori's heart beat faster, having already dealt with so much this morning. The same thoughts were for everyone else, their fear of what they were going to be told at its peak. "Ma'am, please tell me everything is alright…" Madoka said, clutching her palms together.
Taking a breath, Recovery Girl pushed the door open and walked inside, signaling everyone to follow her in. One by one they made their way inside, with each of them feeling their hearts stop in their chest to the sight before them. Madoka gasped and covered her mouth, while all the other adults' jaws dropped open in shock. Both Tenya and Tensei could barely breathe, staring forward as their hands trembled in shock,
"Oh god. Katara…"
Katara laid there before them, the young teen unmoving in the hospital bed. Her entire torso was wrapped in gauges, with extra thick padding strapped onto her chest area as blood still leaked through. Both of her hands were wrapped in bandages, along with her neck and patches on her face. Multiple IV lines ran to her arms, and a large oxygen mask was strapped to her face, the only thing keeping her breathing steady at the moment as the light hiss was heard from the machines beside her. All the members of the Iida family stared in utter horror to the sight, their minds going back to what happened to Tensei months before.
"Katara…" Tenya shakingly got out before sprinting towards the bed., "K-Katara!"
"Katara!" Tensei shouted as he chased his brother, both of them stopping at the bedside. "No… no no no!"
"Oh my god…" Toshinori quietly got out as both Iida parents ran beside their kids, the horrifying sight all too familiar to what he just saw this morning with Nighteye. The sudden chill coming from behind made his skin shiver, turning and widening his eyes at the teen behind him. "T-Todo…"
Shoto's breathing came in short gasps as he stared at Katara, the frost crawling up his shaking fist. He felt like the strength in his legs had vanished, almost falling back in utter shock. "K-Katara…" he stuttered out, slowly walking towards the bed. He wanted to think this was a dream, some kind of horrible nightmare that he could wake up from. That he could wake up and see her downstairs in the kitchen with everyone else. But as he got closer, he knew that wasn't going to happen. His weak legs moved him to the other side of the bed of her, shaking in horror when he saw the girl he cared for like this.
"No… no no no…" Shoto shakingly said as he collapsed to his knees, his trembling hands hovering above his girlfriends bandaged arm. "How… How could this happen?"
Toshinori felt his chest tighten at the horrible sight before him, turning to the nurse. "How… how is she…?"
"She was impaled through the chest by the villain leader they were battling inside their base, having gone through her back and out through the front. While her heart was avoided… her celiac artery was clipped, and her left lung collapsed from the attack…" Recovery Girl quietly said. "She has many other lacerations and deep wounds, not mentioning multiple cracked ribs that broke in several places."
"Jesus…" Midnight quietly said, looking over to Aizawa. She swallowed when she saw the enraged face of the teacher beside her, turning back to the nurse. "Is she stable?"
"As much as we can make her…" Recovery Girl stated, "After Endeavor had cauterized the wound to close the injury, they had to reopen the spot to operate inside. They were able to close the wound… but-
"Your quirk!" Tenya looked back at the nurse, "Your quirk heals horrible injuries! Why aren't you using it on her?!"
"I did as much as I can, and I can't any longer." She regretfully said.
"What? You can heal broken limbs in moments! How can you not do more than this?!" He shouted, tears forming in his eyes.
"You saved her before…" Shoto growled out, looking to the nurse as well. "You need to do it again now!"
"My quirk amplifies a person's own healing ability, but that requires energy from the patient themselves… and she doesn't have any." Recovery Girl sighed in defeat, "If I used my quirk on her in this state, it would kill her."
Their eyes widened at the words they heard, looking back to the girl crippled beneath them."Is there nothing else you can do for her?" Toki asked, pulling his sniffling wife close to him.
Toshinori slowly walked forward towards the teen in bed, his blood running cold when he got a closer look at her; her normally darker complexion was flushed out, the normally strong teen appearing pale and sickly. "What about if you only partially use it? You can-
"I can't. Even without the many lacerations and broken bones, her body is physically exhausted. She lost nearly thirty percent of her blood by the time I got here. If I force her body to heal while so weak, it will take whatever life force energy she has left. We've already begun a blood transfusion. The only thing now… is to wait and see when she wakes."
Tensei's eyes widened when he heard that, the hiss coming from the oxygen mask making his skin crawl. "What do you mean?"
Aizawa slowly walked forward as he looked down to the girl in the bed, the sight of another of his students like this making him enraged. "How bad?" he growled out.
Sighing, Recovery Girl rubbed her forehead as she shook her head. "I honestly don't know. With how much blood she lost, her organs are struggling to even function now. Until she gets her blood levels up, we can't even consider trying to use my quirk until she can wake up on her own… and who knows when that will be…" She clutched at her cane in frustration. "In all honesty, it's a true miracle she even made it to the hospital. If Endeavor hadn't closed that injury, she wouldn't have made it."
Shoto glared when he heard his father mentioned… but kept silent. Despite his feelings he had for what happened, if what she said was true… he couldn't say anything.
Tensei stared at the teen in the bed before reaching up and gripping her hand, the once normal and strong hands of hers feeling cool and limp. He struggled to keep his temper under control as he looked to his brother, seeing the tears rolling down his cheek. He turned back to Katara, gritting his teeth to the sight of the girl he and his family considered one of theirs now.
Shoto's hand reached down and gabbed Katara's other hand, unable to keep his eyes from watering from the bubbling emotions in his chest. He flinched at the slight touch to his shoulder, glancing back to see Madoka Iida gripping his shoulder in comfort. She could see the pain on his face was as much as hers, looking around to the others as they all worried for Katara, the girl that had changed all of their lives in so many ways. A girl that had come into their lives and saved many of them and brought happiness when they never thought they would have it.
And now Shoto could only stare at her helplessly, tears falling down his cheeks as the girl that brought him from the darkness… was now lost in her own suffering.
Later that evening, Toshinori sat down with his head hung low in the lobby of the hospital, sitting across from Aizawa, Midnight and Recovery Girl. The four of them were in turmoil to the entire situation, barely speaking as their tension ran high. Aizawa especially was frustrated, seeing so many of his students hurt today, especially Katara. Her condition was even worse than what it was during the summer camp attack, and now they had no idea how long this coma would last. After struggling to get Shoto and Tenya to leave the room and go back into the waiting room, they now had to deal with the aftermath of this.
"Well, talk about a shit day. I thought it was bad enough already with what I dealt with." he growled out loud, earning a glare from Midnight.
"Are you really going to talk like that now?" she hissed.
"You're thinking the same thing. Look what happened here," Aizawa huffed out. "Twelve police and one hero were killed here, and X-Less lost his eye that released his quirk. He is now retired as of today. Not mentioning the condition Shishido, Mirko and Endeavor are in, we have several other heroes and three students put in the hospital. How do you think this looks?"
Toshinori fists shook in anger at today, feeling beyond helpless how he couldn't have helped with anything. And now, his old friend was dead, many police were killed, and so many other heroes and kids were injured. He looked up and clasped his hands together, looking to Midnight. "Has Nezu said anything yet?"
Midnight rubbed her forehead and shook her head. "He apparently is planning a press conference tomorrow. There has been a flood of complaints coming in about the safety of the school now."
Clasping his hands together, Toshinori leaned back in his chair and stared up at the lights. "With everything that's just happened, I'm not sure what happens next."
The Next Day
Bakugo stared up at the ceiling of his hospital room, groaning after having barely slept through the night. He scratched at the wrapping on his arm, wincing at the sharp pain he still felt after his treatments. "Tsk…" he hissed at himself, pushing his head further into the pillow. The door to his room suddenly opened up, turning to see a familiar rabbit hero coming into view.
Mirko hobbled into the room, her one leg still wrapped up from the deep gashes and the bite she received. Her left arm was bandaged up as well, kept tucked to her side as she shut the door behind her. Her normally cocky expression was gone, replaced with one that… almost seemed unfitting for her; normal.
The pair stared at each other for a moment before she moved through the room and slumped down into the chair beside him, sighing as she stared at the wall ahead. After a few moments, she glanced over to the teen beside her, giving a small smile at him. "How you feeling, sparky?"
Bakugo remained silent, staring at the wall as he took a deep breath. Mirko frowned and looked ahead as well, rubbing at the wrappings on her arms. "Heard you went and saw her earlier. Doc said your friend is stable, so she will be fine."
"Is that what you call being in a coma?" Bakugo growled out, clenching his fists and hissing through his teeth. "Yeah… all fine when she got stabbed through the fucking chest." he glared and looked over at her. "But you got your old pal behind bars, so you're all good now."
Mirko scowled at the comment he made, although instead of lashing out, she leaned back in her chair and squeezed her injury. "You want me to say it, don't you?" she asked, giving a small shrug to herself. "Alright, fine; I fucked up." Bakugo stared at the rabbit hero as she turned back towards him. "I was selfish. I was so determined to take down my old friend… that I let it cloud my judgment yesterday. I… I just had to make him face what he did, and they exploited that."
Bakugo looked back at the wall, in honesty not expecting the stubborn hero to apologize so quickly. "But while I made a mistake, don't put that shit on yourself, kid," she told him, "You guys did something I never thought you kids could do. I've worked with and seen other heroes fight villains over the years, and I will be the first to say what you all did back there was nothing short of amazing."
Amazing… and yet we still almost got killed," Bakugo spat out, remembering lying on the ground unable to get up anymore. "She's there because I couldn't do shit and-
"You keep bitching like that, and I'll put you in a coma beside her," She warned him, huffing out and scratching her ear. "If you gave everything you got, you can't blame yourself for what happens after that. You can't always get it done, but you can try your best. If you've done that, all that's left is to accept your shortcomings and have the courage to try to overcome them."
Standing up, Mirko headed back to the door and opened it, looking back at the teen in the bed, smirking. "Just so you know… I have no regrets having you come work under me. You'll be one hell of a hero soon."
As she left him alone once more, Bakugo took a breath and stared back at the ceiling, unsure what was the next step now.
Tokyo police station
The audience of press members were clamoring in anticipation as they stood below the podium, murmuring as they prepared to get the answers to everything going on. As soon as they saw motion on the stage, they all burst up from their seats and began yelling and screaming, flashing their cameras as the first person walked up to the podium. To their surprise, they realized it was the chief of police, Tsuragamae. The dog headed man approached the podium, adjusting the mic and signaling the crowd to quiet down.
"Thank you all for being here. Today…. Today I am here to go over the events that had transpired yesterday. Across Japan, several teams of heroes were engaged with different villain organizations. In the west, the criminal group known as the Shie Hassaikai was defeated, captured by heroes led by the Nighteye agency. But… I regretfully come to tell you Nighteye succumbed to his injuries yesterday, and has passed away."
While several in the crowd gasped at the news, most instead leaped at the chance to tack on their concerns."We heard several students were injured in that raid as well, can you confirm this?!" A female reported shouted.
"How many instances has this been with kids being hurt?!" another spat out.
"Sir, what about the incident yesterday with Endeavor?!" one of the reporters yelled out, increasing the chatter amongst the crowd.
"We have video of him battling another of those creatures. Is there a connection to the league of Villains?!"
Frowning, Tsuragamae held his hands up to try and get them to calm down. "Principle Nezu will answer your questions about his students, but I can assure you no students were seriously hurt in that raid," He paused for a moment as he swallowed, his small white lie not going to work for the next event. "Now… for your other question; Another team of heroes and police were organized yesterday led by Endeavor, to bring down the criminal organization known as the Hunters."
Most of the crowd looked at each other in confusion, the name not familiar with them as The chief continued. "These deadly criminals have been responsible for nearly one hundred confirmed kills over the years. Working with heroes like Mirko, Shishido, Gang Orca and several others, they have successfully defeated the group of killers and brought them to justice. However… all of them and the other heroes as well suffered significant injuries in the battle bringing them down, including the serious injuries to nine police officers. While they were targeting these villains, it was discovered the League of Villains were involved with them, much like the situation with Nighteye's team."
Reading down the list, the police chief gritted his teeth as he prepared the worst news. "I regretfully come to tell you there was the tragic loss of… twelve police officers and the hero Bullseye."
UA High school, Class 1-A dorm
Sitting in the living room space, Momo, Mina, Tokoyami, and the rest of the remaining 1-A class all anxiously stared at the television in front of them. After class had ended yesterday, many of them had returned to their dorms, only to find many of their friends were still gone. After Tenya and Shoto hadn't returned either, they were all growing confused with the strange feeling they were having. Once Momo had arrived back to school and heard from Izuku however, all their confusion turned into fear. After she had talked to him about what happened, other news stories began popping up about the raid he was involved in, and the videos of Endeavor battling the nomu in Sendai. With everything that had happened, the school decided to give class 1-A the day off today, giving the teens the chance to try and figure out what was going on.
While they had learned Midoriya, Uraraka, Tsu and Kirishima were okay… no one had heard from Katara, Kendo or Bakugo.
Scratching his head, Tokoyami grunted in frustration as the police chief continued talking about the casualties on the heroes, growing more anxious as nothing about the students was revealed yet. "They have to be okay…" he grunted out, "They have to be fine."
"Of course they are!" Mina shouted in defiance, "You think some stupid villains are going to get Katara or Bakugo? And Kendo's just as tough as anyone!"
"She's right," Shoji agreed. "And they were with Endeavor and other top heroes. It's not like any normal villain could hurt them."
As the chief continued to speak, Momo clutched her hand to her chest. "But have any of you heard anything from Iida or Todoroki? Why did they suddenly be called from school if it wasn't serious?
The others silently agreed with the creationist, watching in worry as the chief brought up the news of the lost police officers near Mount Fuji and Niigata. "Holy shit…" Kaminari muttered in surprise.
The entire audience burst out in uproar at the news, many of them clamoring and yelling for their questions to be answered. Instead, however, he stepped back from his mic and sat into his chair, allowing the next person to suddenly come into view. Everyone began muttering when the small white creature was seen, their cameras flashing as they saw the UA principal.
"Thank you all for coming here today," Nezu gave a small bow as he adjusted the mic in front of him. "With everything that has occurred, I feel it is my responsibility to be giving you the information of my students."
"Sir, what of the condition of the students? Are the rumors true of some in critical condition?!" A reporter shouted from the front, causing many others to fall silent as they waited for the answers, just as the classmates did, leaning forward in anticipation.
"I am here to announce that no fatalities were reported from the raid upon the Shie Hissakai teams, where a few students suffered mild injuries. I am happy to report however all of them shall be returning to school within two days having made full recoveries."
While happy with the news Nezu continued on about, Momo and the others had already heard from Izuku about the raid… and the unfortunate fib told by Nezu about Mirio. With him losing his quirk, the principle knew he had to keep the panic of a quirk-erasing drug from spreading.
"And what of the team working for Endeavor?" a reporter got out, making everyone sit up. "What of the students that were hurt there?"
"Yes…" Nezu gave a slow nod as he clutched his hands together. "Three students were working under the heroes that were after the Hunters, and due to unforeseen circumstances, the villains were more prepared for battle than were anticipated. While injured, both Katsuki Bakugo and Itsuka Kendo will be returning to school within a few days as well."
When a single name wasn't mentioned, everyone in the dorm living room felt their breathing stop, sitting on the edge of their seats as Nezu continued.
"Unfortunately… I need to inform you all that one student was not as lucky. In the battle, Kairi Katara has suffered severe internal trauma from the battle… and at the moment she is fighting for her life right now."
As the press began yelling out their responses, everyone in the class 1-A living room felt their hearts stop. Shoji stood up from his seat in shock, looking over to see Mina covering her mouth in horror. "K-Katara…" she gasped out.
"What… Katara is…?" Mineta stuttered in disbelief, feeling his hands shake.
Momo clutched her hands over her mouth as she felt her throat tightening, struggling to keep her eyes from watering as she collapsed in her seat. She heard slight gasping to her right, turning to see Tokoyami's beak fall open in shock, his anger causing his hands to shake. She looked back to the screen as the press all began yelling their questions.
"Katara… what happened?"
Across Japan, Tomura Shigaraki sat in the dark room staring at the television, locked onto the screen as the press grilled the UA principle and police chief. He slowly reached up and scratched his neck, grunting at the commotion going on. "Hmmm..."
He had been beyond pissed yesterday, having failed to get back at Overhaul for insulting him. After he, Compress and Spinner attempted to break through the transport team guarding him, they were forced to retreat and go back into hiding until Twice and Toga showed up. He had no patience left for Dabi at this point, the crazy fire user having been gone for weeks on whatever little thing he was planning himself. Even Muscular had gone off with him, the muscle freak who would've been perfect in attacking that convoy.
But now… he saw the reason behind it all this other turmoil happening.
Despite his frustration with the flame user, Tomura watched in amusement as press members began yelling at the people on the podium, their obvious frustration showing at the way things were.
"Sir, with everything happening now, how can you say UA is a safe place for kids now?!"
"If so many high ranking heroes were hurt here, are you concerned with how they will keep us safe?"
"So we are letting kids fight deadly villains now? Is that really the way you are running things now?!"
"What does Endeavor have to say about this?! How could he have let this happen while he was the one leading this?!"
"Why isn't Endeavor here to answer for this situation?"
As the press yelled out their dismay at the situation, Timura couldn't help but smile, a cold chuckle escaping his throat. "Dabi sure made a mass out of things, didn't he? That bastard still annoys me for letting Muscular get caught… but it seems like things are only getting more interesting from here."
His laugh continued to grow louder as the questions went on, the doubt people had in the new number one hero beginning to grow.
Two Days Later
The trip back to her dorms felt like a dream for Kendo, the entire ride from the hospital to the school in complete silence. Even Bakugo didn't say anything the whole time, staring blankly out the window as they sped along the tracks. Looking down to her bandaged hand, the red headed teen pouted before crossing her arms across her chest, trying to gather some comfort to herself as she tried pushing her mind forward. The only problem was, she could barely think without remembering Katara.
After her treatments over the first day, she finally built up the courage to see the others, finding her mentor Shishido's face encased in thick bandages from his injuries. Despite his condition, she could still feel his smile through the bindings, giving her some joy he was okay still. She had ran into Bakugo as she was heading towards the next room she wanted to see, the teen sulking more than his usual self which made her feel more uneasy however. And when she saw Katara, it only grew more.
Seeing her friend like that made her heart ache, the horrible sound of the heart monitor and the oxygen mask making her shiver. It was especially hard to see Tenya and Shoto forced to leave, taken back to school despite their demands to stay at the hospital. She was unable to stay in for too long, needing to go back to her room and bury her head into her pillow to try and close her eyes, but restful sleep never truly came.
The announcement above broke her thoughts, their train arriving back to their destination. Walking through the street, they stayed quiet as they made it through the gates of UA, and to their dorm building that evening. Once they made it through the doors, they were both met with the eyes of their classmates widening in shock when they saw them. They all gasped, their nerves on end as Izuku and the others had returned a few hours before.
"Bakugo, Kendo!" Sero yelled out and sprinted at them. "You guys are back!"
"Oh my god! It's been too crazy!" Kaminari whined.
"Thanks…" Kendo gave a half hearted smile, struggling to keep her face straight.
"Kachaan… Kendo. It's good to see you guys alright!" Izuku said, but the look on the two newcomers' faces easily told him what he needed to know, his own smile faltering as they remained silent.
"You guys need anything? I can make some food if you want." Jiro asked, earning a small head shake from Kendo.
"I'm… I'm fine, thanks."
As most of the classmates continued to pour their relief, the one question loomed over everyones head, most unsure to ask it and-
"So what's the news? How is Katara?!"
Everyone in the room tensed at the words spoken, turning to see Mina standing there clutching her hands together. "I'm sorry. I just… I need to know. How is she?"
Momo felt her jaw clench as she wanted to ask the same thing, having been terrified since neither Tenya or Shoto answered anything when they got back the day before. She looked back and could see the turmoil on Kendo's face, her eyes widening as Bakugo walked past the others towards the elevators. "You're leaving?" She asked.
"I'm going to bed…" he bluntly said, leaving everyone else to stare awkwardly as he disappeared, leaving Kendo alone.
Ojiro rubbed his head and sighed, "Well, we were wondering about-
"Guys…" Kendo's tired voice cut him off, everyone staring as she looked away, "I'm sorry… I really just want to go to my room right now if that's okay."
While most were disappointed with her request, they could see the turmoil in her face. With the tension filling the air, Shoji Swallowed the lump he felt and looked at the others. "Let's give her some space, guys."
Giving a small nod, Kendo moved past everyone and to the elevator as well, waiting for it to come down to get her. Once alone inside, she inhaled deeply and rubbed her face, not wanting to go over any of what happened. Exiting on her floor, she made her way to her room and threw herself onto her bed, not even bothering to change as she clutched a pillow to her stomach and rolled onto her side, attempting to sleep through the night and avoid her thoughts. Once again however she just couldn't relax fully, most of the time staring blankly at the ceiling before falling asleep… and seeing blood.
With the next day being Sunday, school was off once more, which didn't really matter since their classes had been canceled since the press conference. For those who had seen Katara in person, however, they all took that time to be isolated in their rooms, refusing to answer their phones or their doors.
Sitting on her bed in a shirt and shorts, Kendo stared at the bandages on her hands and her left leg above the knee. Ripping at the bandages on her hands, her breathing hiked for a moment as she stared at the deep gash marks across both palms from Rogue's teeth, but mostly at the dark red patch in the center of her right palm. She turned her hand over and saw the same thing on the top below her knuckles, the raw spot on her hand certainly never going away once it scarred over. She didn't even need to look at the spot on her leg to know that it was going to be the same thing, another scar to add to her collection. But she didn't care about that… she didn't care about herself right now.
It was close to midnight now, and her mind was in far too much frustration to sleep now, stepping off her bed and stomping towards the door. After heading to the elevator, she made her way down and opened the door, making her way around the corner to the kitchen, her eyes widening slightly as she saw Izuku, Momo and Kirishima sitting around the counter.
"Kendo!" Momo said as she saw the red head, standing up from her seat. "Hey! How… how are you feeling?"
Huffing out, Kendo gave a small shrug. "I'm alright. Just can't sleep." she said, more bluntly than she planned to. "Just… came for a drink real quick." She walked by the trio, sensing the looks she was receiving from them as she opened the fridge. "How about you? Feeling better?"
"Yeah, I just…" Kirishima rubbed his head. "Needed to get out of my room for a bit."
"That's good. Hope you're doing good." Kendo tried sounding positive, grabbing a bottle of water and shutting the door. Before she could turn back to the elevator, she was met with Momo standing there, clutching her hands at her chest. "It's alright. I'm fine and-
"Kendo wait…" Momo muttered, her face filled with worry. "It's just… everyone is so worried now…" she glanced back to Izuku, feeling her chest tighten. "After hearing what Izuku, Kirishima and the others went through, we were so horrified to hear what happened to you guys."
Kendo felt her gut tighten at Momo's statement, clenching her fist and turning away. "I… don't want to talk about it now, okay?" She huffed out, earning a frown from Kirishima and Momo.
"Look, I know what you're feeling," Kirishima said, "It's just we are freaked out right now. Iida and Todoroki have barely said a word to anyone, and even Bakugo isn't really talking right now. We just wanna know what happened."
"I…" Kendo grimaced and clutched her arm, shuddering and walking away. "I just can't right now. I gotta go."
"Kendo, please," Momo said as she reached out and grabbed the red head's arm, "you've been avoiding talking to everyone as well. I can see you're distraught and-
"I SAID NO!" Kendo screamed out, yanking her arm away and glaring at the tall teen. "I DON'T WANT TO TALK RIGHT NOW! SO JUST LEAVE ME ALONE, ALRIGHT?!"
As she panted in anger, Kendo's entire body felt ready to explode, shaking in frustration from not being left alone. After a few moments she realized what she did, her eyes widening at the frightened look on Momo's face. Her mouth trembled as she saw both Izuku and Kirishima staring at her, swallowing and stepping back. "I… I'm sorry. I just… I just can't right now." Feeling her guilt rise, she turned and quickly walked towards the elevator, pushing the button several times as she clutched her water tighter. "I'm sorry."
As the door opened, she quickly walked inside the elevator and pushed it shut, but before it closed, someone's hand opened it back up, staring in worry as Izuku was there now. "Midoriya, I'm sorry for snapping at-
"It's okay…" he quietly said, looking at her with concern and sympathy. "We should've given you your space."
Kendo's mouth fell open at his words before she turned away. "I shouldn't have done that still. It's…"
"It's hard talking about things sometimes," Izuku said, knowing exactly what she was feeling after what he saw with Nighteye. "Everyone is just so scared because… Katara is the only one not back." He looked back at her troubled face. "Just take your time, Kendo. But just know if you ever need anyone to talk to, we are all here for you."
As the door closed, Kendo was left standing alone, gritting her teeth and kicked the ground. "Stupid… yelling at Yaoyorozu like that." she scolded herself, rubbing her arm and huffing out. She just wanted to go back to her room and try and sleep, although that was easier said than done. Walking through the hall, she went back to her door, but before she opened, the loud thumping caught her attention.
"Huh?" she muttered, walking past her room and toward the noise. The constant thumps continued to grow louder, reaching Kirishima's slightly open door and pushing it open.
"Rah!" Standing there in his cut off shirt, Bakugo pounded on the tall heavy bag hung up. He growled and punched it over and over, throwing several uppercuts before pausing and taking several deep breaths. He panted and leaned on the bag, wincing at the pain in shoulder and arm from the pair of stab wounds he received from Itkomi, only making him grit his teeth and drive several more punches into the bag. "Damn it!" he yelled and slammed his elbow into it, huffing and clenching his fists before noticing the door open, frowning at the girl standing there.
"I see why Kirishima was downstairs," Kendo muttered, taking a drink of her water. "Can't sleep either, huh?"
Wiping the sweat off his face, Bakugo breathed hard and grunted. "No shit." Cracking his neck, he stared up at the ceiling for a few moments before looking over at the teen in the doorway, seeing the turmoil on the teens face. He could tell what she was feeling, shaking his head tapping the bag. "Here."
"What?" Kendo said in confusion, looking at the bag and back to him. "Now? Seriously?"
"You got anything better to do?" he asked, crossing his arms and stepping back. "Looks like you need it."
Frowning, Kendo rolled her eyes and turned away. "Not in the mood, alright? I just want to be alone right now."
"Yeah, that's working out well."
Gritting her teeth, Kendo glared at the ash blonde teen. "How about you mind your own business for once? Just because you think you're all special, how about you just-
"Hit the goddamn bag and shut up." Bakugo growled, causing her eye to twitch.
"God. fine!" Kendo stomped into the room and tossed the water to the side. "If it shuts you up, I'll do it." she snapped out and positioned herself in front of the bag. Clenching her hands, she winced from the pain in her right palm, huffing out and raising her hands up. She took a breath and threw a jab, the bag shifting from her hit before throwing another and a light punch, gasping at the stinging in her hand.
Bakugo however only tapped his fingers on his arms. "Hit it."
Glaring at him, Kendo pursed her lips out before shaking her hands and hitting it again, adding more force to her punches. She gritted her teeth as the stinging sensation grew in her right arm, but something else began growing inside her. With every hit, she felt her heart rate grow faster, her breathing becoming more erratic as her fists drove into the bag. Despite that, Bakugo bared his teeth and growled.
"I've seen what you can do. Hit it!"
Hissing through her teeth, Kendo began grunting with every hit she landed, ignoring the immense pain running through her now bleeding right hand. She forced her arms forward, cracking the bag with punch after punch, not even noticing her blurry vision from her watering eyes. As she landed her blows on the bag, her mind began replaying the images from the cavern; the large teeth of Rogue's mouth nearing her throat. She then pictured Muteki's cold claws on her arm, twisting it until it was near snapping off. She drove multiple uppercuts into the bag, sweat falling down her forehead as the sinister eyes of Itkomi arose in her memories.
She panted as she began punching it as hard as she could, clenching her eyes as she now vividly saw the spider woman charging at them. She felt like her heart was going to burst as she remembered the cold webs encircling her body, the immense pain in her hand as she was stabbed through the palm. Worst of all, she pictured the sight of the blow dealt to Katara, the long spider leg piercing through her chest. She watched as Katara collapsed to the ground, her friend lying in a pool of her own blood as her eyes shut in front of her.
"AHH!"
Without realizing it, Kendo's hand expanded and crashed into the bag, snapping the chain and slamming it into the wall. Her breaths came in deep gasps as she stared at the broken bag, not even caring about the bleeding wound she reopened on her hand as it shrank back, for the pain in her heart was far worse. Her eyes leaked tears as her emotions spilled over, the feelings she was holding inside forced to the surface. She couldn't control it anymore, her lips quivering as she dropped to her knees, slamming her fists into the floor as she cried.
Bakugo stared at the sniffling girl below him, seeing her finally break the cap off the guilt she was bottling up inside. He watched as she trembled on the floor, sighing and kneeled down beside her. Before he could say anything however, he yelped in surprise as she threw herself onto his chest, wailing as she clinged onto his body for any form of comfort.
"She was right there… Right t-there in front of me," she choked on her words as she struggled to keep her breathing calm. "She was hurt and I couldn't do anything! She was stabbed and I couldn't even protect her!" Her shaking hands squeezed his shirt as she laid her face against his shoulder, wailing in guilt at what happened. "She was always there to save me, and I can't even do the same for her. I wanted to do something… b-but I couldn't help her! I WAS FUCKING USELESS! JUST LIKE I WAS BEFORE!"
As kendo broke down in agony, Bakugo stared blankly at the broken bag before him, exhaling through his nose in frustration as well. He hesitantly brought his arms up and encircled the girl in front of him, half heartedly giving her a pat on the back. Instead of backing off from his touch, Kendo buried herself into him further, crying out in utter frustration to everything she was feeling. Breathing in, Bakugo slipped his arm over her shoulder, pulling her into his chest as he let her release all the pain she had been holding inside. He didn't say anything, letting her cries be the only thing heard.
After spacing out for a small while, Bakugo realized the sobbing had stopped, noticing the weight still pressed against his chest. Glancing down, he saw she had actually fallen asleep on him, her small breaths brushing against his shoulder. Sighing, he leaned back and scooped her up in his arms, carrying her out of Kirishima's room and to her own. Pushing the door open, he walked in and laid her on her bed, frowning as he pulled her hands off his shirt. Once he was free, he watched her shiver before pulling a blanket over her, exhaling and staring down at her for a few moments, brushing her side ponytail off her face before turning and leaving the room.
Now alone once more, he grunted and gripped the bridge of his nose, huffing out and heading back to his room. He opened and shut the door behind him, flicking on the light to the desk on the side of the room and sitting in the chair. Looking at the small box on the corner, he grabbed it and opened it up, pulling out the magnifying glass and stand he ordered. Once set up, he then pulled out the small baggie he had tucked in his drawer, opening it and carefully letting the contents pour onto the desk. Once it was empty, he stared down at the pile of rubble, hoping everything was there.
"Didn't have much time before we got out of there…" he muttered to himself, shifting through the miniature pile with his fingers.
Grabbing a pair of larger pieces, Bakugo stared through the magnifying glass, placing the two pieces of blue stone together to see if they matched. When they didn't, he grabbed another, going through the remnants of Katara's shattered necklace.
