Kaia's job is to care for the reef and she spends her days tending to the different creatures and cleaning what she can. Many moons later she finds a mirror (it's a bit odd she knows what it is even though she's never seen one before) and marvels at her reflection. Her hair is the color of sunshine, the scales dusting her cheekbones a coral pink while the ones decorating her shoulders a seafoam green that slowly darken as they scatter towards her tail.

"You didn't know what you look like?" Jazlee asks and balances on one foot as she uses the other to hold up the mirror, "Then again, the only thing I knew is that my feathers are all kinds of shades of amber and brown and orange. I wonder why I never thought about that before."

"The other mermaids tell me I'm too curious." Kaia folds her arms over her bolder to rest her upper body, keeping her tail in the water. "I know they don't mean it in a bad way and that my job is important, but it's been twelve moons since we first woke up and I want to do more than tend the reef."

"At least you're doing something; I'm supposed to be at this island of rocks that's hours away from here so I can lead corrupted sailors to their deaths."

"I wish I could ask Mother," Kaia sighs, "I wish there was a way I could find out more."

Jazlee only shrugs.
