Early on, when she first started observing humans, Jazlee quickly realized that she doesn't like males with blond or black hair. And that every time she sees one, she wants to sing.
She wants to lure them to her and slowly lead them towards a boat then let them drift out to sea. She'll summon a storm and watch as they panic; watch as the raging sea drags them down and they plead for someone, anyone, to save them.
You don't deserve to be saved.
She'd wondered if that would change after the ritual, and as they walk amongst humans, it becomes clear that the answer is a glaring no.
But Kaia brings her back from her hateful thoughts. Her friend has always looked so melancholy; from the first time they met there's been a despondent quality to her aura and to see her so happy now is something Jazlee can't bring herself to ruin, regardless of how she feels.
"Look at these Jazlee, I've never seen anything look so beautiful and delicious!"
There's all sorts of food displayed in the window of a building; cakes and candy that she's watched humans eat and all of them look amazing but it's the absolute joy Jazlee sees on her friend's face strengthens the drive to keep the melancholy away.
The shop owner is kind enough to give them a sample, insisting she does that at least once for every tourist that comes by, and when they leave Kaia's humming a tune Jazlee's never heard before, her tone light and unburdened.
It makes her feel… happy. The constant bitterness she's long learned to live with is gone, chased away by sweets and happy melodies. She wonders if this is how the other mermaids feel; they don't have an aura like Kaia, they don't watch the seas with desperation like the other sirens, they don't care for anything except their charge.
She wants to feel like this all the time and resolves deep in her heart to not let anything ruin this happiness.
