So... exams? A real drag.
Anyways, I made a small edit in a previous chapter; they're not gonna be on land for two weeks, instead 7days. I hope all of you have a lovely Halloween and those (like myself) who are preparing for tomorrow, Happy Dia de los Muertos :)
Kaia wonders how humans manage without scales or feathers; the fabric Jazlee insisted they wear doesn't adjust to temperature changes and takes a while to dry after getting out of the water.
But the humans she's seen don't seem to mind; wear all sorts of colors and patterns and don't seem to notice the magic surrounding the mermaid and siren among them. Or maybe they do; there've been quite a few humans who give them a second glance then stare for a moment before shaking their heads and walking away. Hopefully the ritual did something that will keep them from being discovered.
Two sunsets later, after they've seen and done more than they've ever dreamed of, they stop to watch as their third day ends. The sand is warm between her human toes and the waves soothing as they lap at the shore, but their peace is broken when a voice reaches their ears. The initial words are lost, muffled somehow, and Kaia looks around sees a human female staring at them, tears running down her face.
"Oh my-! I'm so sorry! I th-thought you were s-someone elseā¦"
Jazlee slowly steps towards her, "Why are you crying?"
The female rears back, as if she's been struck, "Y-you even s-sound like h-her!" she wails.
Kaia rushes over and envelops the female into her arms just before she falls to the ground, despair and grief radiating from her. She gently lowers the female to the sand and Jazlee wraps a comforting arm around them as she settles by the female's side.
They patiently wait for the crying to stop, but the sorrow that has followed this female has held her for many moons, and it's not till long after the stars have appeared in the sky that exhaustion ends her tears.
"Do you think another human will come looking for her?"
"Probably," Jazlee sighs, "I've noticed humans usually travel in packs, so maybe she got separated."
Kaia gently lies the female against the sand, taking care to not pull on her hair. It's long, as long as Jazlee's, but it's almost the same color as Kaia's.
"I wonder if that's how you would look like with long hair." Jazlee teases, "Bet ya that I'd look great with short hair."
"Brianna!"
Kaia curls protectively around the female as Jazlee jumps to her feet, ready to attack, at the male voice that cuts through the air.
"Brianna!"
"Brianna, where are you?!" A second and third voice calls.
"We need to hide."
"We can't just leave her here, Jazlee."
"Then bring her with us, we have to hurr-!"
"Kick?" The female stirs, "Mom? Dad?" She hisses in pain when she tries to open her eyes, and Kaia guesses it's from the grief.
Before she can say anything, Jazlee grabs her wrist and yanks her into the sea.
