The festival continues the next day, and the day after. They spend much of their time entertaining the crowds and when people ask where she learned to dance she tells them the sea taught her, when they ask Jazlee what song she's singing she tells them it's called The Siren's song. Every time they answer she wonders if they suspect what she and Jazlee truly are, but the humans simply tell them their answers are romantic.

Just as Kaia thinks that humans are kind and sweet and different from the stories, a human male tries to poison them. The drinks smell sweet and a touch crisp, but underneath is something acidic and foul. Jazlee unapologetically dumps both on him then charms in him to walking towards the sea. Kaia keeps him from drowning but after the fourth time, by different males and females, Jazlee decides to do something.

"I won't let them roam free," She snaps, "I'll stop them with or without your help."

Kaia thinks about going to the police (she's not sure how she knows what they are and what they do, but she does) and ultimately decides against it, but insists on keeping the wicked humans alive.

"Mermaids don't take human lives," She hugs her friend tightly, trying to keep from breaking into tears, "Please don't make me be the first."

Jazlee hugs her back and agrees to Kaia's condition, and they spend the night charming the males to the point of unconsciousness and cleansing the more intoxicated ones. Slowly, she starts to notice how cruel some humans are. Part of her had known, it's her job to protect creation after all and the stories her pod tells can be quite frightening, but she had secretly hoped it wasn't true.

By the time the sun sets on their final day, Kaia wonders if walking on land had been a mistake.
