Jazlee decides she's not willing to be human again, and it won't matter how much her friend insists (because that mermaid is too curious for her own good). She knows the look on Kaia's face will threaten to break what's left of her siren-heart, but when Jazlee swore she would protect her mermaid's happiness, that she would never risk losing her only friend, she meant it.
And she has a feeling that if she returns to land then the young man from her dreams, the one with a boyish grin, will find her.
Part of her wants that (oh how she wants-) but it's not a chance she's willing to take if it means they'll also see the one with eyes of steel. Because she knows with every fiber of her being that he will be the one to break her friend. They won't be able to avoid him, because where there is one, the other isn't far behind.
Jazlee's pulled from her thoughts when a red-haired human bursts through the trees and ends the silence with a laugh that is boisterous and carefree. Vaguely she registers this person is female, but that doesn't stop a sudden wave of vicious anger to cloud her vision and before she knows it, Jazlee's singing. She keeps the melody quiet, almost as if it's being carried by the breeze, because she's never used her voice against a female before. The ones at the festival had been in awe of her, when her magic had been dimmed by her human form, but it doesn't guarantee that she can lure this one to the cliff's edge.
The female tilts her head as the music weaves around her, slowly looking more and more peaceful as the seconds pass before she takes a step towards the tree Jazlee's hidden in.
Yes. Jazlee thinks, Come. Just a little closer to the ledge.
Then another voice interrupts, "Julie? What are you doing?"
She doesn't stop singing, thinking that maybe she can charm this red-headed female as well, but it quickly becomes clear this one isn't affected. She slowly ends her song and casts a spell to hide her from human eyes and escapes quietly just as the first female, Julie, blinks in surprise.
"Scarlett?"
