Soon after their conversation, Jazlee tells her their favorite spot has a new, human visitor that seems to stop by far too frequently and spends hours there. It doesn't take them long to find somewhere new to meet without being seen and as the days go by, Kaia notices her friend has less underlying bitterness and anger.

It makes her happy, to see Jazlee so unburdened, but she wonders what happens to sirens that go against their nature.

Then again, she's always been a little too sad and a little too curious for a mermaid, and yet nothing's happened to her.

Except the dreams.

… but the dreams didn't start until after she and Jazlee first walked on land, and her friend hasn't said anything-

Neither have you.

Kaia shakes her head viciously, as if she can get rid of the voice that's been haunting her since she saw the Viking. There's nothing wrong with her; she's always been a little different from the other mermaids but she's fine, which means Jazlee's allowed to be a little different too.

She repeats this to herself over and over again, hoping it'll drown out the voice.
