Kaia decides to take matters into her own hands. She's been this odd mix of passive and proactive for many, many moons and although there were times she felt as though there were two personalities at war inside her... Now she thinks maybe there were, that there are, that she was something (someone) different before she woke up at the bottom of the sea.

She thinks she may have been human.

The thought tries to drift away, but she forces her mind to keep hold of it. It's so hard to keep her thoughts together lately, and she wonders if it's somehow related to the rise and fall in her magic. Some days it wavers like a leaf fighting against a breeze, while others it coils and twists like it's ready to burst
at the slightest provocation.

On those days, when the accumulation of magic is so great it feels like she could shatter, Kaia uses something that was lost deep inside her to regain control. She's not sure what it is, what the memory it's linked to could be, but she's able to hold on to her mind and her thoughts and it's what helps her plan.
She begins by talking to the other mermaids again, then speaks to the other creatures of the sea, and then the sirens who love mischief just as much as they love chaos.

The sirens are the most helpful. While the other mermaids and sea creatures offer bits and pieces of information, they can't help her leave messages on land, or help her search for the humans that she knows deep in her being have something to do with her beyond what she remembers.

On land she keeps a book hidden from any prying eyes, protected against the sea and wind and rain, where she draws or writes what little she can remember after she wakes.

But although she speaks to many, although she keeps searching, she can't find Jazlee.
