(After 'The Change in the Game')
I don't own Bones.
Ooooooooooooooo
Since Daisy Wick technically worked for Dr. Cam Saroyan, Brennan felt she should allow her supervisor some input into the problem that Daisy had created. Standing just inside Cam's office, Brennan cleared her throat to get the coroner's attention.
Surprised to see she had company, Cam turned from her computer monitor and smiled at her forensic anthropologist. "What can I do for you?"
"I am not sure if you are aware of what has happened in the few last days regarding me and one of my interns, but I feel you should know about it since she does work for you." Brennan saw the look of surprise on her supervisor's face and knew she didn't know about the bedlam surrounding her pregnancy. "Booth and I are in a personal relationship. We have been since Mr. Nigel-Murray was killed."
"Well, that explains what has been going on between you two. I assume Booth has told his boss about it." Cam had found the partner's behavior to have been quite odd lately but now that she knew they were together she could see that she had misunderstood what was going on and felt a certain amount of relief. "Congratulations."
So far, their conversation had gone the way Brennan had expected it to. "Thank you. The Deputy Director knows about our relationship and he will not interfere with our working partnership. As long as we remain professional while working together then he doesn't see why we can't work together . . . I am pregnant. I had planned to keep that a secret until my second trimester, but that decision was taken out of my hands . . . One of my interns found out about my pregnancy, told one of her friends and that friend posted that information on two Brennan fan sites . . . As you know a reporter approached me at the crime scene yesterday. What you don't know is why. He wanted confirmation about my pregnancy . . . Since dishonesty can create unpleasant repercussions, I decided to confirm my pregnancy to the reporter. Lying about it would have created trust issues between the Lab and the journalists who cover crime stories . . . As you can imagine, Booth is upset, but he has decided that I should take care of this dilemma since the intern works for me . . . well, for you which is why I am talking to you now."
Rubbing her forehead, Cam felt a headache building between her eyes. "And the intern is?"
"Ms. Wick." Brennan waited to see what her supervisor would say or ask.
"How did she find out that you're pregnant? I assume you didn't tell her." Cam sighed. She really needed a vacation.
Slowly shaking her head, Brennan decided to be completely honest with Cam since she hated to lie and she hated to be lied to. "Technically, I suppose you could say I did tell her." Brennan held up her hand to stop Cam from interrupting her. "Booth and I were at the Founding Fathers last Friday night and the bar was crowded with patrons . . . We were speaking louder than we should have been and we both mentioned my pregnancy. We didn't know that Ms. Wick was sitting in the booth behind us and she overheard our conversation. She left the bar by the back entrance so we wouldn't see her leave . . . She didn't tell anyone here at the Lab about my pregnancy, but she did tell one of her friends and like I said, that friend posted my personal information on two Brennan fan sites."
"And a reporter asked you about it at the crime scene." Cam shook her head. "What do you want to do about Daisy?" She decided that Brennan should make that decision since it was her life that had been put on display to the public and Daisy was her intern.
"I have considered various options and I would like to have a staff meeting with my interns and our Lab technicians and remind them about the importance of trust at this Lab. If the FBI, Homeland Security and the CIA cannot trust us to remain silent about private information that comes to our attention then our reputation could be ruined and we could lose our contracts . . . true this wasn't about any case we were working on, but it is still about trust since I didn't announce my pregnancy publicly and neither did Booth . . . Booth needs to be able to rely upon our discretion while we are working on a case and he needs to be able to trust us. Right now, he has his doubts about our ability to keep secrets." Brennan wanted Cam to understand that this wasn't just about her personal information getting out. She knew that Booth has trust issues and this incident wasn't helping him to trust the people he should. She knew it was important that this issue be resolved.
Brennan had been clear and precise and Cam couldn't fault anything she had said. "I think that's a good idea. I will arrange a meeting for Friday morning. We can have it in front of the platform, there should be plenty of room. If you want to invite Booth to the meeting then you can do so. I don't expect him to say anything, but it may assure him that we are doing something about what happened. I assume you won't say anything to Daisy until the meeting . . . It wouldn't hurt to make her rethink her actions and mull over what she did. It might make her rethink her penchant for gossip."
"Yes, I would like her to stew about it. Booth thinks that is a good idea. He doesn't want me or you to fire Daisy, but he is angry with her . . . My publicist not only had to confirm my pregnancy she had to announce that I am in a relationship with Booth . . . He is a very private man and he is not happy about what has happened. He wanted to talk to Parker before we said anything publicly about our relationship change and my pregnancy . . . He called his son last night, so that is taken care of. Still, Booth is not happy that his life is being talked about on the internet . . . He did know that sooner or later my fans were going to find out about my pregnancy and my relationship with Booth, but he was counting on keeping that secret for a few months."
"No, I imagine he's not happy at all." Cam shook her head. "Okay, I'll send out an email about the meeting and we'll go from there."
Since there was nothing else to say, Brennan left Cam's office.
Cam stared at the empty doorway and finally shook her head. "I hope Daisy avoids Booth for now. He can be unpleasant when he's angry."
Ooooooooooooo
That evening, after the partners had arrived home, Brennan let Booth know about the meeting at the Lab. "You are welcome to attend if you want to. Neither Cam nor I expect you to say anything during the meeting, but we did think you might want to be there to see that this situation is being taken care of."
"So, you decided not to fire, Daisy." Booth hadn't been sure what his partner was going to do about her intern, but he hadn't really wanted the intern to be fired. He was angry with Daisy, but not enough to ruin her career.
"No. I am going to make this a learning experience for everyone at the Lab . . . I want them to understand how important it is that personal information not be disclosed while they are working at the Lab. The FBI, CIA and Homeland Security should be able to rely upon our discretion when dealing with cases. There is a lot of personal information that is involved in cases and that information shouldn't leave the Lab. This is about trust. You should be able to trust that any secrets learned at the Lab should remain secret until you, as the Agent in charge of the investigation is ready to release that information. I don't want you to think that you can't trust everyone at the Lab . . . Yes, the information Daisy gave to a friend was not related to a case, but she should have been more circumspect since it involved people she works with."
Moving his dice in his pocket, Booth finally released them, removed his hand from his pocket and leaned over to kiss his lover. "Thanks Bones . . . We could have probably handled this better, but it is what it is. Just get your people to stop gossiping about us, at least to someone that can damage our careers if they release it on the internet. I'm just lucky that Deputy Director Bishop values our partnership and doesn't care what we do in private."
"Yes, that was fortuitous."
Oooooooooooooooooooooo
Let me know what you think of my story. I appreciate it.
