Chapter 6
Hi guys! Thank you so much for your feedback and reviews. Awesome! I love them all. I want to prepare you! This is a longer chapter, but it is told intermittently in both POV's. A combo chapter. Enjoy!
Hello Casual Cosmophile: Are you still seeing the same chapters posted? I looked into it, but they are not the same. I have noticed that when I upload Fanfiction on my phone it acts weird…as in chapters are messed up, or it doesn't actually show how many chapters are posted. ECT. But when I view my story on a laptop, it's normal.
Is anyone else having this problem? And if so, is it just with this story, or others on Fanfiction?
Hi Sweelise: I love the way your mind works! Haha Bella being in Aro's bed. I suppose that would be interesting…Haha. Oh. The amount of rage Enzuk would have would be epic.
Hi sherylb: I look forward to renewing your hope in Enzuk and Bella. Enzuk knew bringing Bella to Novis would be a battle. It's why he tried to shut down any feelings for her in Part 1. But…that didn't work. Nope.
BELLA POV
I had never been so thrilled to see the glass doors of my enclosure lower. Melxa had informed me that I would finally have the chance to engage in different types of tasks. As I smiled from ear to ear, he gave me a strange look.
"I knew you would be happy, but not this happy," he remarked.
"I'm just excited to have a change of scenery and the opportunity to do something productive," I replied.
"The tests you completed were productive. They were also very important to me," he argued.
"Yes, they were. But life can become monotonous when that's all you have to look forward to every day," I explained.
"Oh, so you would rather do subservient work instead of participating in valuable testing that could change my people's perspective on humans. I see," he said sarcastically.
"Melxa, you know what I mean. Just try to put yourself in my shoes," I pleaded. He smirked and tilted his head.
"I don't think my feet would fit in your shoes. Now, I need you to really focus today. You have a crucial task to assist with. This is also an opportunity for you to demonstrate your obedience and put into practice all the lessons you have learned from me. If you think you aren't being watched and scrutinized, you are mistaken. Understand that outside these walls, there is no forgiveness or mercy. If you make a mistake and say or do the wrong thing, it could be a matter of life or death. So, be cautious. Listen attentively. Speak only when spoken to. And refrain from expressing your opinions freely," he warned.
"I can handle it," I assured him with determination. His doubtful expression only fueled my determination to prove myself.
Melxa provided me with more details about the festival. The first day had already passed, dedicated to the Omna people, and now it was time for the grandeur of the royal court. My responsibilities would include not only setting up and decorating, but also serving the esteemed guests. Melxa guided me out of the sterile labs and into the vibrant streets of Novis, allowing me to experience the city and its inhabitants for the first time. It was a stark contrast to my previous excursion with Enzuik, as this time I had the opportunity to truly immerse myself in the wonders of Novis and its people.
As I looked around in awe, I couldn't help but be captivated by the sight of the bustling Omna people. They moved with grace and elegance, adorned in lavished robes, exquisite silk dresses, and enchanted footwear that seemed to shimmer with every step. The streets beneath my feet were paved with small pebbles, creating a unique texture and adding to the charm of the city.
The soil, an unusual bluish-gray color, added to the enchanting atmosphere of Novis. It was as if the very ground beneath me held a mystical quality, mirroring the vibrant energy of the city itself.
Everywhere I turned, there were shops filled with treasures and trinkets, each one more enticing than the last. The Omna people, with their radiant smiles and infectious laughter, seemed to revel in the joy of life. They danced through the streets, engaged in playful fights, and their laughter filled the air, creating an atmosphere of pure happiness.
In that moment, I couldn't help but be captivated by the beauty and vibrancy of Novis and its people. It was a world unlike anything I had ever experienced, a place where magic and wonder coexisted with the everyday lives of its inhabitants. And as Melxa led me further into the heart of the city, I couldn't wait to discover more of its secrets and immerse myself in its enchantment.
"This is considered a joyous time," Melxa whispered to me, his voice barely audible amidst the vibrant festivities. The air was filled with the infectious energy of the Omna, their laughter and music echoing through the streets. "It is a rare sight to witness such a bustling atmosphere, as the Omna are known for their tranquil way of life. But during this festival, our independence is celebrated with fervor. It brings together Omna from all corners of the realm."
"However," he continued, "it also brings about a heightened disdain toward humans. I do wish you were assigned a task once the festivities conclude, sparing you from the increased disrespect often directed towards humans during this time of year. But these orders came from higher up." Melxa emphasized that while this time of year was full of joy, it also brought forth a darker side. The Omna's disdain toward humans, already present throughout the year, intensified during the festival. It was a bitter reminder of the divide between our races, a reminder that humans were outsiders in their world. Melxa's warned me that the heightened disrespect toward humans during this time could be overwhelming. He cautioned me to keep my head down and avoid meeting the gaze of any Omna.
I nodded, my excitement bubbling beneath the surface as I contemplated the opportunity to showcase my skills and make a meaningful contribution to this momentous event. However, a tinge of anxiety began to creep in, overshadowing my initial enthusiasm. Enzuk, my temperamental companion, had always been a handful on Earth, and the thought of dealing with a whole group of already angry Omna didn't sit well with me.
As I stepped into the grand dining hall, my eyes widened in awe at the sheer opulence that surrounded me. The space seemed to stretch on endlessly, with its vast expanse capable of accommodating hundreds of guests. The room was adorned with several magnificent chandeliers that held intricate designs. Long tables, elegantly dressed in white and gold linens, stood proudly in perfect alignment, beckoning guests to take their seats. Each table seemed to have been meticulously set, with gleaming silverware and crystal glasses, ready to be filled with the finest wines and delicacies.
The grandeur of the dining hall was further enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling windows that adorned the walls. These windows, framed in ornate gold trim, allowed the natural light to flood the space, creating a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape. The cream-colored floors, so immaculately polished, reflected the light with such brilliance that they resembled shimmering mirrors.
I suddenly felt very small. This was no ordinary dining hall; it was a sanctuary of luxury and refinement, a testament to the extravagant lifestyle of its inhabitants. I slightly hid myself behind Melxa as the atmosphere buzzed with excitement, everyone working together to create a spectacle fit for royalty. Melxa beckoned me to keep following as we moved from the large dinning hall to an open floor ballroom lined with mirrors and gold floors.
Melxa's presence commanded respect, and I could feel the weight of his authority in the air. The ballroom itself seemed to hold its breath, as if anticipating something grand about to unfold. The mirrors, meticulously cleaned to a sparkling sheen, reflected the golden hues of the floors, creating an ethereal glow that bathed the room in a warm, inviting light.
As I followed Melxa, my eyes couldn't help but wander to the grandeur of the two golden thrones. They stood tall and imposing, adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments that spoke of a regal lineage. The humans attending to them moved with grace and precision.
The silence in the room was broken only by the soft sounds of my footsteps, echoing against the polished floors. Each step I took felt like a whisper, a humble reminder of my place in this grand setting. Melxa, with his air of confidence and grace, led me further into the ballroom. The vastness of the space seemed to stretch out endlessly, amplifying the sense of solitude and intimacy. It was a sanctuary away from the bustling dining hall, a place where one could retreat and find solace amidst the chaos.
I caught the attention of a few human slaves who momentarily diverted their gaze towards me. However, their attention quickly shifted towards Melxa, a figure of authority, causing them to instinctively lower their heads and intensify their efforts. It was as if their fear and subservience drove them to increase the pace of their work, as if trying to avoid any potential repercussions.
As we ventured further from the opulent ballroom, our exploration led us into a series of grand sitting areas, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication. These spacious rooms were adorned with lavish furnishings, including plush couches and chairs that beckoned us to sink into their luxurious embrace.
The ambiance of these sitting areas was one of refined comfort, with soft lighting casting a warm glow upon the richly decorated walls. Elaborate tapestries and ornate artwork adorned the surroundings, adding a touch of grandeur to the already splendid atmosphere.
As we strolled through these expansive spaces, I couldn't help but appreciate the meticulous attention to detail that had gone into their design. The plush couches, upholstered in sumptuous fabrics, invited me to relax and unwind, while the elegant chairs, with their intricate carvings and graceful curves, seemed to whisper tales of bygone eras.
But, I quickly learned that the decadent dining hall, and ballroom were merely the beginning of our journey through this enchanting space, where every corner held the promise of further elegance and splendor. Melxa stopped in front two thick glass door as he peered out of them. He smiled when his eyes found what he was looking for. "Remember your training," Melxa said as he opened the doors.
As I stepped through the doors, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight. The outside garden area was a paradise of vibrant colors and intoxicating scents. Lush greenery surrounded me, with flowers of every hue blooming in perfect harmony. The air was filled with the sweet melody of gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze.
There were paths made of intricately designed cobblestones that enticed me to explore further. Yes I remained close to Melxa. As we walked, I couldn't help but notice the meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of this enchanting space. Delicate statues adorned the corners, their graceful forms adding an air of sophistication to the already ethereal atmosphere.
There was even a secluded gazebo nestled amidst a cluster of blooming roses. Its intricate lattice design created mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow, inviting me to rest and take in the beauty that surrounded me. The garden seemed to stretch on endlessly, each corner revealing a new surprise. Melxa's words echoed in my mind as I marveled at the beauty before me. This garden was not just a physical space, but a testament to the power of imagination and the pursuit of elegance.
I heard a melodious female voice something in Omna. I discreetly peered around Melxa, my curiosity piqued. There stood an enchanting Omna woman, draped in an elegant off-the-shoulder cream dress with a tantalizing hint of red lining. However, it was not her attire that captivated me; it was the resplendent hue of her hair. Unlike the customary silver tresses adorning the heads of Omna, her locks shimmered with a radiant golden glow that nearly blinded me, akin to the brilliance of the sun's rays reflecting off its surface.
The Omna woman paused, her gaze shifting between Melxa and me. In that moment, I felt a surge of unease, knowing the importance of adhering to their customs. Remembering the strict rules of etiquette, I swiftly averted my eyes, directing them towards the ground beneath my feet. A sense of reverence washed over me as I humbly bowed my head, acknowledging her presence with utmost respect.
"Rosalina," Melxa said with joy. "How goes your day?"
"Melxa," she replied. "My day is well. Thank you. I'm surprised to see you out of the labs." I was surprised Melxa chose to speak in English. Did he do this so that I could understand? But I was even more surprised that the woman, Rosalina, responded back in English.
"Yes. A rare sighting, I know. I have something for you though."
"I see," she said cautiously. "Not only are you speaking Human, but you have brought me one as well. What am I supposed to do with...her?"
"I think it's best if she understands the transaction here. Nothing more. And yes. I brought her here to assist with any work, as well as serve at the dinner."
"I have all the help I need."
"Still, I was instructed to bring her to assist. I know how much you love to have everything in order. So, I brought her to you." While keeping my head down I peeked up at her. She held a look of disdain.
Melxa, sensing her apprehension, tried to reassure her as he spoke something in Omna. She didn't look convinced. Melxa then continued in English, "Rosalina. Trust me, she is here to help. With her assistance, you can accomplish so much more and ensure everything is in perfect order."
She reluctantly nodded, acknowledging Melxa's intentions.
"Fine," she finally conceded. "But she must prove herself worthy of being here. I will not tolerate any incompetence or disruption to our carefully crafted routines."
Melxa smiled, relieved by Rosalina's reluctant acceptance. "Thank you, Rosalina. I knew you would understand. I believe this human has the potential to be a valuable asset to our team." She sighed waving Melxa off.
"I'll find something to do with her. You can go."
Melxa nodded, chuckling to himself. "Always so polite," he muttered under his breath.
"Actually," Rosalina said, disregarding his comment, "who was it that sent this new human again?"
"Aro," Melxa replied. Rosalina raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Lord Aro?"
"There is only one Aro," Melxa confirmed.
She narrowed her eyes at him before shifting her gaze to me. "I'm not supposed to educate her, right? Because I really don't have time for that."
"No. She's been trained and educated about most of our ways. At least the basics. Enough for her to work," Melxa assured her. Rosalina nodded, deep in thought.
"Is she from the recent raid on Earth?"
"I-I can't say," Melxa hesitated.
"Can't? Or won't," Rosalina pressed.
"She's new, that's all I will say. I hope you will put her to work in whatever way you see fit," Melxa replied. Rosalina nodded again, contemplating her options.
"Fine. I hope she's not as dense as she looks. I don't have time to follow behind a human."
I glared at her, biting my tongue to avoid causing any issues before even being assigned a task. How dare she call me dense? I wasn't dense! Rosalina instantly picked up on my reaction, raising an intrigued brow and matching my glare with her piercing eyes. Feeling uncomfortable, I shifted my gaze to the ground, not wanting to create any problems.
"I assure you, I don't anticipate any complications arising from her. However, in the unlikely event that she does cause any trouble, please inform me without delay. Rest assured; I will personally ensure that she faces appropriate consequences for her actions."
As his words reached my ears, I felt a wave of nervousness wash over me, causing me to lower my head in response. The mere mention of punishment sent a shiver down my spine, for it was a concept I had never encountered during my time with Melxa. What sort of punishment?
In all the days that we spent together, I had never once been subjected to any form of punishment. Melxa had always been understanding, patient, and forgiving, nurturing a relationship built on trust and mutual respect. The realization that I could somehow disappoint or anger Melxa enough to warrant punishment left me feeling a mix of confusion and regret.
"Good," I heard Rosalina say.
Melxa, sensing my mixed emotions, gently patted me on the head, offering reassurance before he turned to leave. As his figure receded into the distance, a sudden wave of uncertainty washed over me. The excitement that had consumed me moments ago now seemed to waver, as if a cloud of doubt had settled upon my eager heart. The prospect of being left alone suddenly felt daunting, and I found myself torn between the desire to chase after Melxa and the fear of facing the unknown on my own.
When Melxa was no longer present, Rosalina approached me and began to walk around, closely inspecting every aspect of my being. Her gaze was intense, as if she were searching for something specific or trying to unravel a hidden mystery. I could feel her eyes scanning my physical appearance, observing the way I carried myself and the expressions that flickered across my face. As she circled me, I couldn't help but feel vulnerable. It was as if her scrutiny was peeling away the layers of my being, exposing parts of me. It was as if she was trying to decipher the thoughts and emotions that resided within me.
"Melxa clearly spoke in the human language so that you could understand why you are here. And I hope you listened carefully. Also, I would strongly advise you to exercise caution in revealing that aspect of your personality," she cautioned, her voice dripping with concern as she halted before me. "I am uncertain as to why Lord Aro granted you permission to assist with tonight's celebrations, but my suspicion is that it will not bode well for you if you fail. Moreover, judging by your current demeanor, it seems you are already destined to embarrass yourself unless you rein in that attitude. Do you understand, human?"
I nodded.
"I refuse to take on the burden of your mistakes, and I won't protect you from facing the outcomes of your actions. In these gatherings, humans may initially play the role of servants, but that dynamic can swiftly shift. If you don't improve your behavior, you might find yourself as the main course on the dining table. Consider this my only warning to you."
I nodded again.
"I've done my fair duty in warning you," she said. But, as she continued, her tone shifted, revealing a glimmer of unexpected admiration. "Personally, I must admit that it is refreshing to see a human with some sort of personality," she confessed. "Most humans don't have any original thoughts. Those feelings have been beaten out of them. You're new, but I'm sure you will get there one day," she said, her voice softening with a touch of sympathy. "Soon, if your luck lasts, you will be a good, obedient, mindless human, just like all the rest," she concluded. It was as if she had resigned herself to the belief that conformity was an inescapable fate for humanity, yet a part of her still held onto a glimmer of hope, a belief that perhaps one day, humans would break free from the chains of conformity and embrace their true individuality.
She lifted my chin gently. As our eyes met, I couldn't help but be captivated by the beauty that radiated from her. Her pale skin, so smooth and flawless, seemed to glow in the soft sunlight. The mesmerizing depth of her blue eyes, sparkling like sunlit ice, held a mysterious allure. Her lips, full and inviting, were adorned with a deep red tint that stood out against her fair complexion. The contrast between her lips and her bright golden hair created a striking visual harmony. In that moment, I couldn't help but wonder if there was such a thing as an ugly Omna.
It was as if she belonged to a realm where perfection, was the norm. It made me question my own self-image, as I couldn't help but feel inadequate in her presence. There was a flicker of recognition, a spark of understanding that passed between us. In that silent exchange, I knew that she had seen a glimpse of my true self, and I had allowed myself to be seen.
"I'll let that mistake of yours slide this once, but don't make it again. And just so you know, I know you are well aware of what mistake I am talking about."
Grateful for the leniency, I expressed my gratitude with a soft and appreciative smile. Rosalina, with her grace, took a step back, her thorough assessment now concluded.
"Let's get you a task. We have a lot to accomplish and not much time to spare."
Did every Omna speak English? From what I could see, there were humans of various nationalities among the Omna. I would have to ask Melxa later.
As the day progressed, I marveled at the beauty that emerged from our collective efforts. Despite me working closely with other humans on various tasks such as diligently cleaning the floor, meticulously laying out peculiar appetizers, and meticulously polishing the silverware, an eerie silence enveloped our interactions. It was as if each human wore an invisible muzzle, for they never uttered a single word to me and barely even glanced in my direction. The absence of communication left me feeling isolated and disconnected, as if I were merely a shadow in their presence.
There were fleeting instances when I desperately sought to establish a connection through a simple exchange of glances or a warm smile, but it was impossible. The atmosphere was thick with an eerie silence, as if even the air held its breath in reverence. Apart from briefly pausing our tasks to pay our respects with a polite bow to the Omna, our focus remained unwaveringly fixed on our work, ceaselessly toiling away without respite.
Rosalina, obviously a diligent and organized individual, possessed an unwavering dedication to efficiency. Whenever we completed a task under her guidance, she seamlessly transitioned us into the next one. With her keen eye for detail and exceptional multitasking abilities, Rosalina effortlessly managed all the humans and other assistants, ensuring that no time was wasted in between tasks. The decorations and lights in the garden sparkled in the sunlight, enchanting all who laid eyes upon them. I moved with precision, ensuring every placement was impeccable, every detail flawless.
The sudden giggle had caught my attention, drawing my eyes toward the sound. I saw Rosalina being swept off her feet by the large male Omna, his arms encircling her and spinning her around, causing her white dress to flare out in a beautiful display.
"Emmico!" she squealed, clearly delighted by the unexpected surprise. The Omna male planted a gentle kiss on her cheek, his playful growl adding to the charm of the moment.
He said something in Omna, his voice filled with mischief and affection. Rosalina, however, seemed determined to resist his advances, attempting to wiggle out of his embrace.
ENZUK POV
I watched from the shadows as Emmico insisted on locating Rosalina. Even though they had been mated for years and they still behaved as newlyweds.
"I have come to steal you away," he declared.
"Not right now," she protested, her voice lined with a hint of urgency.
But Emmico was persistent, asserting his claim over her. "Yes. Right now. You are my woman. And when I want you, I want you," he proclaimed, his words carrying a sense of possessiveness and desire.
"Can you not see I am in the middle of planning the most important festival of the year?" she pleaded, hoping he would understand the importance of her work.
Emmico had a playful glint in his eye as he raised a flirtatious brow. "Can you not see I am in sore need of your...love?" he teased, his words dripping with playful seduction.
Rosalina playfully smacked him, causing him to release her from his embrace. "There will be plenty of time for that later," she replied.
"You will make me wait that long?" He complained.
"Of course. It's something you can look forward to." She smiled.
Emmico smiled back at her. "By the way my love, the place looks absolutely stunning. You always manage to surpass yourself each year. Your attention to detail and creativity truly shine through in every corner of this place."
Her face lit up with a radiant smile, filled with pride. "Thank you. It means a lot to me. But you know, the real test is yet to come. The guests still need to arrive, and the evening needs to unfold seamlessly. Only then, once everyone is comfortably seated and enjoying their dinner, will I finally allow myself to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labor."
Emmico's eyes rolled in exasperation as he muttered, "Why did I have to fall in love with someone so obsessed with perfection?" Seeking solace, he leaned his head against hers, tenderly planting a gentle kiss on her lips. Suddenly, he pointed directly at me, his voice filled with urgency, "Take my advice, brother, and never claim a mate!"
Isabella had been observing the entire scene unfold, but it was only when Emmico singled me out that she finally noticed my presence. I knew she didn't understand the Omna language that was exchanged, but she was observant. It was impossible for my presence to go unnoticed after Emmico pointed me out. Literally.
As our eyes locked, a dryness settled in my throat. Her lips slightly parted, cheeks blushing as she swiftly averted her gaze and focused on the ground. Trying to regain composure, I shifted my attention back to Emmico and firmly responded in Omna, "if I have any say in the matter, I won't."
"Oh, come on. You don't mean that my love," Rosalina said to Emmico as she kissed and ran her hands along the back of his neck. "Do you?" She whispered in his ear. "Do you wish you hadn't claimed me as a mate?" Emmico visibly shivered and then he laughed.
"Of course not, my love. One of the greatest joys in having a mate that carries my heart." Emmico pointed at me again, "I take back my words, brother. At least…until after my mate pleasures me."
I stole a quick glance at Isabella, my eyes lingering on her delicate figure. She stood there, captivating as ever, in her simple white dress. This time, however, there was no trace of the tear that marred our previous encounter. I smirked. What a shame. Oh well. I guess I had another dress to rip. And this time, it would be more than a small piece.
The thought of whisking her away again was tempting. The idea of scooping her into my arms and escaping aways from prying eyes and judgmental whispers, into the depths of the mysterious forest, ignited a fire within my veins. Oh, the wicked fantasies that danced in my mind, yearning to be explored. The things I could and would do to her body. Tear that dress off, kiss her beautiful naked body, and pleasure her for hours.
"You hear that Enzuk? The greatest joy," Rosalina interrupted my thoughts.
I blinked a few times at the mention of my name and I smiled at her.
"Yeah," Emmico stated. "But you don't have to worry about choosing a mate brother. Tanya's got her claws in you. And you better not defy that woman for too long." Rosalina and Emmico chuckled, as I rolled my eyes. I turned my attention back to Isabella who seemed to be trying to understand our language as she listened, although her eyes were fixed on the ground. But, I knew my girl. I knew her mind. Curious and always striving to understand new things. She was still a little scientist deep down. My adorable scientist.
"That one's new, in case you are wondering," Rosalina stated. I looked at Rosalina with a questing look. "That human? She is new. Melxa dropped her off for work today at Aro's request. I think she's on some kind of probation. Like a test run or something."
"How has she done so far," I asked, my gaze fixated on her once again.
"She's done well. So far. The true test will be tonight when she is among all the guests."
I nodded, understanding the importance of her performance. "Shouldn't she be in something more appealing?" I questioned; my curiosity piqued.
Rosaline raised her brows, surprised by my suggestion. "More appealing? She is a slave. We don't really dress up the slaves, as I'm sure you know. But I mean...I guess you are right. She can't wear that ugly plain dress to the gathering tonight. I still have to get her a proper uniform. And I'll have to have her put up her hair."
I tilted my head to the side, considering the options. Isabella would undoubtedly look stunning in a well-made Omna gown. It was a shame that she would be confined to plain slave attire on the most celebrated night of my people. However, I was certain that not even a paper bag could hide her radiant beauty. Not from me.
As Rosalina and Emmico indulged in their playful and flirtatious banter, I seized the moment to approach Isabella. Despite her gaze fixed on the ground, I could sense her awareness of my presence. The evidence of her hard work was evident, with tiny droplets of sweat clinging to her forehead. "I've heard that you've been performing admirably thus far," I remarked in her language.
She simply nodded, her obedience to our cultural norms evident. She was doing the right thing by doing so…But for some reason, it pained me to see her conforming to these expectations. That wasn't her. Isabella liked to push things to the limit. She as industrious, and…rebellious. As much as I hated to admit it, I liked how we freely spoke with each other in private on Earth. When it was just her and I in that holding cell. Hell, I liked that was she talked to me when it was just the two of us her in glass cell. She could be sassy, and even bold. She showed her true emotions. It was too bad we couldn't continue that in public. I didn't want to see her become a mindless human. Not my girl. My girl needed to be free to express anything.
Besides, those eyes were too damn beautiful to be giving the ground so much attention.
Placing my finger gently under her chin, I lifted her face until her tender brown eyes met mine. "You've always yearned for an opportunity to prove yourself, to demonstrate your ability to thrive beyond the confines of your cell. Tonight is that chance," I emphasized. "There will be individuals present who may recognize you, some who will test your resolve, and others who may voice opinions contrary to your own. But you must remain focused. Can you handle it?"
She bit her bottom lip and then nodded. "I'm ready," she said.
That's my girl. "Good," I smiled, admiring her determination. As I gazed at her, my eyes tracing the contours of her face, I couldn't deny the overwhelming sense of longing that washed over me. Every feature, every curve, seemed to be crafted with meticulous perfection, like a work of art that I could only admire from a distance.
My thumb gently grazed her bottom lip, a tender touch that sent shivers through her. I could feel the softness and warmth beneath my touch. Her lips felt inviting, with a slight moisture that hinted at anticipation. The sensation of her delicate skin against my fingertips filled me with a tingling excitement. There was a subtle texture, a velvety smoothness that made me want to explore further. The touch of her lips awakened a desire within me, a longing to feel their warmth against mine, to taste the sweetness they promised. It was a fleeting moment, but its effect lingered, leaving a lingering sensation of anticipation and craving.
Damn she looked good. I bet she felt good too. My jaw tightened. What would it be like to be inside her? Why couldn't have her? She was mine. So, why wasn't I allowed to claim her? Why couldn't I claim my fucking mate? It was a bittersweet sensation. It really was a cruel irony. I spent so much time on Earth telling her we could never be, and now, all I wanted was her. She was like a forbidden fruit, tantalizingly close yet unattainable.
Her beauty was both a blessing and a curse. It ignited a fire within me that I couldn't extinguish. It was a desire that consumed my thoughts, leaving me yearning for something I knew I couldn't have. I couldn't help but revel in the exquisite torture of her presence, savoring every stolen moment.
"W-will you be there?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. I couldn't help but smirk at her innocence. Adorable.
"Why?" I asked with a smirk. "Do you want me to be there? That's cute."
She raised her head slightly, "I just want to see if your confidence matches your arrogance," she replied, determination overcoming her fear.
"Confidence? Arrogance?" I chuckled, leaning closer. "Isabella, those are just facets of my irresistible charm. But if you truly wish to witness it firsthand, then yes, I will be there," I replied, my tone holding amusement.
She scoffed. "Well, consider my curiosity piqued."
"I will be there. But don't expect me to bend the rules for you. You must be on your best behavior. Any slip-up could be exploited by those who seek to harm you. And trust me, they will come for you, given the chance."
Once again, she nodded, fully comprehending the seriousness of the situation.
She met my gaze again, her eyes locking with mine. "I'll probably be occupied with serving and attending to my duties to notice much," she replied, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. It amused me how she adamantly refused to acknowledge any emotions she might have for me. Perhaps she wasn't ready to label it as love, but there was definitely something there...
A playful smile tugged at the corners of my lips. In a low voice I said, "I know what happened on Earth still angers you, Isabella. But how much longer do you plan on pretending to be angry with me?"
She glared at me; her expression filled with fury. "I am genuinely angry with you. Until I liberate myself, I will continue to be angry with you."
I couldn't help but smile at her fiery look. She was cute when she was angry. "You know, they say that anger is the most intense manifestation of passion one can feel for another person."
"It can also be the most genuine way of telling someone to fuck off," she retorted. I chuckled.
Damn. My human was feisty. Still, her response didn't deter me. Instead, I ran my tongue across my bottom lip, a subtle gesture that conveyed both confidence and desire. "You know, I meant what I said back on Earth," I continued, a mischievous glint in my eyes.
She frowned. "You said a lot of things on Earth. What exactly are you referring to?" she asked, her tone colored with skepticism.
I leaned in closer, relishing the tension between us. "That humans are easy to bed on my planet, and it's well accepted," I confessed, fully aware of the effect my words had on her. She could deny that she was attracted to me all she wanted, but her body told a different story. I could even smell her arousal that had been building from the moment I touched her skin.
Her glare intensified. But she couldn't hide, I could see the flicker of uncertainty in her eyes and the reddening of her neck.
"How long do you really think it will be before I have you screaming my name?" I taunted, my voice low and seductive. A shiver ran through her body, and her cheeks flushed, betraying the effect my words had on her.
"Never," she gritted out, her defiance evident.
Undeterred, I pressed on, fueled by the challenge she presented. "Never? Oh. Is that a challenge? I love to meet challenges. Besides, you need something to do with all that passion. If it's not to love me, then you may as well pleasure me," I suggested, my voice dripping with arrogance.
Her eyes again flashed with anger. "Don't you dare," she warned, her voice filled with a mix of anger and vulnerability.
I couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction, finding amusement in her fiery spirit. "I'll see you later tonight," I declared, my thumb gently caressing her cheek before tracing along her bottom lip again "And maybe... much, much later too," I added, a suggestive smirk playing on my lips.
She glared at me with venom and frustration, but I couldn't deny the thrill it brought me. Her feistiness was quickly becoming one of my new favorite aspects of her. "Feisty," I commented, unable to hide my amusement. "It makes for a good time," I added, my smile widening. She remained frustrated and flushed, a sight that only fueled my desire for her. I was a good look on her. I chuckled, knowing that our passionate encounters were far from over.
The silence that followed was deafening, as if the weight of the world had settled upon our shoulders. I quickly released my grip on Isabella's chin and turned to face Rosalina and Emmico, who held puzzled expressions. Rosalina eyes darted between me and Isabella at first with confusion and then with curiosity. Emmico just looked…well confused.
I made my way back to the two of them, trying to appear innocent despite the conversation they saw me having with Isabella. "What?" I asked openly, hoping to divert their attention.
Emmico shook his head, clearly not buying my act. "No. You what? What was that about?" he pressed; his curiosity evident.
I shrugged my shoulders, feigning ignorance. "What was what about?" I replied.
Rosalina, always perceptive, asked with a curious smirk, "Do you know her?"
"I ran into her while on Earth," I admitted, hoping they wouldn't pry further.
Rosalina's smile widened, as if I had just revealed something she had been wanting to know. "Hm. And you are running into her again, I see," she commented, her tone indicating that she knew there was more to the story. I narrowed my eyes at her, not appreciating her insinuations.
"Is that a problem?"
Emmico scoffed. "No. Unless Tanya sees you. You will be doing a lot more running if Tanya catches you with her," Emmico said in a teasing tone. "Bed the human. Have your fun. Just don't let Tanya see her."
"Tanya and I are not... bonded yet," I clarified, trying to defend myself. "I said I would give us a chance, but that doesn't mean I won't still enjoy nightly pleasures," I added, trying to assert my independence.
"And we all know humans are good for that," Emmico said with a grin. Rosalina smacked him playfully.
"Agreed," I smiled.
Rosalina's smile grew wider, clearly amused by my response. "So…you do plan to bed the human?" she asked, her tone laced with amusement.
"I'm just saying I'm not tying myself to Tanya before it's time," I replied, trying to maintain my composure.
"Ouch," Emmico said with a smirk. "He said, tying himself," he chuckled. "Guess we know how you really feel now," he teased.
I sighed. "I am giving our union a chance. I'm willing to see what becomes of it. But I still have needs," I defended myself, not wanting them to judge me.
"No judgment," Emmico quickly interjected, raising his hands in surrender. "But, that human seems to have some anger toward you. Maybe you were too busy eyeing her body to notice, but she had some serious anger going on. Which I'm surprised you allowed. Now I'm really curious what went down between you and this human on Earth."
"Nothing went down between us."
"But did she go down?" He wagged his brows.
I wish. What a sight that would be. Her lips wrapped around my member. Dear gods. Probably too huge for her to get her mouth around. Hmmm. Even better. I would love to see her try.
"Or maybe you are saving that adventure for tonight," Emmico added. "I don't blame you, brother. Before Rosalina, humans served as a-" Emmico paused when Rosalina narrowed her eyes at him and growled. "As-um-a very poor substitute for pleasure. I mean humans really are inferior. I wouldn't waste my time bedding a human. In fact, you should spend your time claiming a real Omna woman. Like I did. Give Tanya a chance."
I struggled not to laugh at his quick-witted way to save himself from sleeping without his woman tonight. He was close to being denied pleasure. "Thank you, brother, for your advice. I guess a couple of naked female humans in my bed will have to do for now. Until I happily settle down, like you."
Rosalina cleared her throat. "Well, since you are willing to give Tanya a chance, I guess it's good that I seated her next to you tonight. Dinner with her should prove to be a nice evening for you."
I cringed inwardly, not looking forward to the awkwardness that would ensue.
Emmico smirked, clearly enjoying the situation. "Yes, especially if she provides the dessert," he added, his comment dripping with innuendo. Rosalina gave him a look of disbelief, clearly unamused by his teasing.
"You, young Sir, are asking for it. Stop teasing already," she scolded him, wiggling out of his arms. "The dinner party will begin soon. You two should go wash up. Especially you, Emmico. You stink of the hunt," she added, wrinkling her nose.
"Then give me a bath, woman," he nuzzled her neck.
"Another time. Now go wash."
"You like the smell," Emmico smirked, knowing he had hit a nerve. Rosalina reluctantly returned his smirk.
"No one else does," I muttered under my breath. Emmico laughed a little, clearly finding the situation amusing.
"Fine. We will go spruce up for the ladies," he finally conceded, realizing it was time to get ready for the dinner party.
Rosalina nodded, her attention already shifting to the tasks she needed to complete. "I have to get the rest of the party in order," she said, already moving away from us. "And I need to get that human some suitable attire. She can't go looking like that."
Naked would be best.
She'd be much better with that dress off, I thought mischievously, unable to resist the playful idea that crossed my mind. As Emmico and I began to make our way out, I couldn't help but steal a glance back at Isabella. Her eyes followed us as we departed, a mix of curiosity and longing evident in her gaze. However, her attention was soon captured by Rosalina, who effortlessly drew her into a lively conversation.
Emmico smacked my shoulder. "What fascinates you so much about that human?"
"Nothing," I replied. "Why do you ask?"
"Because you keep looking at her. Why don't you just bed her and get it over with?"
I raised an eyebrow at Emmico's suggestion. "Come on. We joke. But seriously. I'm not really interested in 'bedding' humans. I prefer to keep my distance. You know how I feel about humans."
Emmico chuckled. "Oh, come on! We may be Omna, but we have needs. You have needs. Like you said. You're not bonded yet. And if Tanya isn't doing it…maybe the human can help in that regard. You're telling me you've never been tempted by the allure of a human's touch? "
I shrugged, a faint smile playing on my lips. "Perhaps I have, at times. Humans possess a certain charm, I guess."
Emmico leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "She's not all that bad looking…for a human. I'm just saying. Neglecting your needs isn't healthy, you know. And let's face it, you've been quite tense lately. Perhaps this human could assist in helping you unwind."
"I have a great deal on my mind," I replied, my voice firm and unwavering. "And you know I am a warrior of the realm. Engaging sexually with humans isn't at the top of my priority list. At least not often." My words carried a sense of duty and loyalty, emphasizing the boundaries I had set for myself. Well….at least before I met Isabella. But he didn't need to know that.
Emmico sighed dramatically, shaking his head. "You're missing out, my friend. There's nothing quite like the thrill of bedding a human. Unlike Omna women, they leave nothing to the imagination."
Emmico was right. Omna women, just like Omna men, were harder to court sexually. Our private parts only became exposed when we felt sexually aroused. Human females and men were easier. Everything needed to provide pleasure was always exposed. It didn't matter if they were ready or not. They were effortlessly accessible.
"Ultimately, they are disposable. It matters not if you indulge in one or two," Emmico continued. Did he just call Isabella disposable?
Although Emmico's words angered me, I chose to remain silent, suppressing my rising indignation. The way he casually spoke about Isabella being disposable struck a deep chord within me. It was unsettling to witness such callousness toward her worth and emotions. However, I realized that voicing my disapproval would be futile. Emmico's words were merely a reflection of the prevailing Omna opinion toward humans - a widespread disregard for their emotions and intrinsic value.
I chuckled softly. "Perhaps you're right, Emmico."
"I know I'm right," he confidently asserted. "If you don't take her to bed, someone else surely will."
As his words pierced through me, my jaw clenched tightly. The thought of someone else satisfying Isabella's desires was unbearable to me. I couldn't fathom allowing anyone, besides myself, to bring her pleasure. She was not just any woman; she was mine, and I would go to great lengths to ensure that she remained solely mine.
BELLA POV
When the royal court finally arrived, resplendent in their regal attire, I stood among the serving staff. I was prepared to offer them the finest delicacies and beverages and attend to their every need. I anxiously toyed with the edges of my floor-length black dress, the soft fabric slipping smoothly through my trembling fingers. It was a captivating ensemble that seamlessly blended with the attire of the other human servants, yet mine possessed a touch of distinction. Delicate golden embroidery adorned the neckline, adding a subtle opulence to the otherwise understated garment.
Rosalina had taken great care in preparing me for the evening's affairs. She had directed me to gather my chestnut tresses into a bun, and then ensured that not a single strand dared to escape its elegant confinement. As if completing the ensemble, she presented me with a pair of black padded flat shoes, their comforting embrace mirroring the simplicity of my dress. In this ensemble, I stood poised and ready to fulfill my duties, my nerves still fluttering within me like a caged bird yearning to be set free.
I observed with great curiosity as the individuals from the Omna community entered the scene, exuding an air of elegance. The men were adorned in exquisite robes, meticulously designed with intricate patterns in black and white. They carried themselves with grace and confidence, their attire reflecting a sense of sophistication and refinement.
Walking beside them were the women, their arms linked with their male counterparts. They were dressed in beautiful gowns made of delicate silk, which gracefully draped their figures. The colors of their dresses ranged from serene shades of blue, symbolizing tranquility, to pristine white, representing purity, and hints of soft pink, evoking a sense of femininity and grace. The majority of the females possessed lustrous, flowing silver locks, with various styles adorning their heads. Some chose to intricately braid their hair, weaving delicate patterns that added a touch of sophistication. Others opted for a more refined look, elegantly pinning their silver tresses into graceful buns that exuded timeless beauty. Meanwhile, a few let their hair cascade freely, allowing the natural waves to create a captivating and carefree aura.
As if their stunning hair wasn't enough, they were adorned with exquisite long gold and silver earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, enhancing their already radiant beauty.
In that moment, I couldn't help but feel a pang of self-consciousness. Standing there in my simple black dress and bun, I felt incredibly plain compared to these women who seemed to embody perfection. Their elegance and grace were unmatched, and I couldn't help but feel inadequate in their presence. As an onlooker, I was captivated by the mesmerizing sight before me, as the Omna community effortlessly showcased their unique sense of style and fashion.
Despite my best efforts to convince myself otherwise, I couldn't help but find my eyes instinctively searching for Enzuk amidst the grandeur of the dining hall. The sheer magnificence of the space only heightened my anticipation. As I stood there, surrounded by opulence, I suddenly caught a familiar sound - the melodious giggles of Rosalina. She was engaged in lively conversation with a man named Emmico, if I remembered correctly, and they seemed to be enjoying each other's company. Rosalina, adorned in a dark navy dress, exuded an air of elegance and sophistication. The dress, seemingly woven with countless diamonds, emitted a mesmerizing sparkle that caught the light from every angle.
My eyes continued to scan the room, until my breath caught.
My heart skipped a beat as I watched a couple gracefully enter through the majestic doors. It wasn't just any ordinary couple, it was Enzuk. He exuded an air of regality as he stood tall, his gold and white robe flowing gracefully around him. His silver hair, carefully braided into one long strand, added a touch of maturity to his appearance.
But it was not just his own presence that captivated attention. By his side stood a stunning woman, her vibrant red and gold dress a perfect match to his regal attire. The dress hugged her curves in all the right places, accentuating her beauty and confidence. The rich red fabric seemed to glow against her flawless complexion, while the golden accents shimmered with every movement, mirroring the radiance in her eyes.
Together, they formed a striking couple, their complementary outfits a testament to their shared elegance and taste. As they moved through the crowd, heads turned and whispers of admiration followed in their wake, for they were a sight to behold, a living embodiment of grace and style.
The sight of them together took my breath away, causing a hitch in my throat.
The woman by his side was a vision of elegance. Her long, flowing silver hair cascaded down her back, shimmering in the soft light of the room. Her piercing blue eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, captivating anyone who dared to meet her gaze. Adorning her delicate ears were golden earrings that swayed gently with each step, adding a touch of glamour to her already enchanting presence.
Enzuk, with his confident stride and magnetic aura, seemed to be in his element. She held Enzuk's arm with tenderness and possessiveness as she smiled at onlookers. It made me cringe inside. Was that Enzuk's mate? Was that what I was against? I mean…not that I was after Enzuk…but…ugh. I did not like the woman around his arm. As they disappeared into the crowd, leaving a trail of whispered conversations and lingering gazes in their wake, I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be in her shoes.
I put my head down.
Enzuk had firmly stated that an Omna and a human could never have a relationship, but my heart and body refused to accept that notion. Despite his words, there was a deep connection between us that I couldn't deny. However, Enzuk's behavior toward me was perplexing and contradictory. One moment, he would shower me with kindness and romance, making me believe that there was a chance for us. But in the next moment, he was standing beside a breathtakingly beautiful woman, leaving me feeling inadequate and unable to compete.
Maybe Enzuk saw something special in me, but ultimately his actions with his female companion made me question where his true feelings lay. I was consumed by a swirling mix of anger and envy, my emotions intertwining in a tangled mess within me. The mere thought of him ignited a fiery rage within my chest, directed not only at him but also at myself for allowing him to have such power over me.
Now I despised the fact that I had actively sought him out, desperately yearning for his presence. It was a bitter pill to swallow, acknowledging my own weakness and vulnerability. Only to see him busy with another woman. The very idea made me loathe myself even more.
He had kissed her? Had they shared intimate moments before he went to Earth? The thought twisted my insides, a knot of jealousy tightening in my stomach. Eznuk had claimed he hadn't found a mate yet. But what if he had always planned to come back to the woman now on his arm? It was a torturous possibility that gnawed at my mind.
God. I felt so stupid.
In that moment, a wave of embarrassment washed over me, flooding my senses with a profound sense of foolishness. How could I have allowed myself to entertain romantic thoughts about Eznuk? It was absurd, utterly ridiculous. I cringed at the memory of the recent wet dream I had had about him, my cheeks burning with shame. Were those the things he had already experienced with the woman on his arm? I bit my bottom lip in an attempt to quell the tumultuous emotions raging within me.
I needed to regain control, to distance myself from this maddening situation. Despite the nagging thoughts of Enzuk and the woman clinging to his arm, I firmly shook my head, banishing them from my mind. This was my moment, my chance to shine. I couldn't afford to be distracted by petty jealousy or insecurities. It was time to prioritize myself, to focus on honing my skills and showcasing my abilities.
The weight of Melxa's expectations rested heavily upon my shoulders, and I couldn't bear the thought of letting him down. Every move I made, every action I took, would be scrutinized by the watchful eyes of the Omna people. Being the newest addition to their community, I had to demonstrate my worthiness, prove that I deserved a place among them.
The room suddenly came alive with thunderous applause, filling the air with palpable excitement, as an elegant figure made his grand entrance through the double doors. I recognized him immediately. Lord Aro. Adorned in a resplendent white robe that shimmered under the warm glow of the chandeliers, he wore a regal gold crown atop his head, signifying his noble status.
However, I couldn't help but notice the absence of a female companion by Lord Aro's side. It seemed unusual that no one accompanied him. I mean, everyone else seem to have a female companion. Even Enzuk.
So why didn't Aro? Maybe he never found a mate. Or made he choose to be single.
Every step Aro took exuded grace and poise, as if he were gliding effortlessly across the polished marble floor. A smile graced his lips, revealing a glimpse of his charm and charisma. His eyes swept across the room, acknowledging the adoration and respect bestowed upon him by the gathered crowd.
When his eyes momentarily landed on me, I could feel a surge of nervousness coursing through my veins. Instinctively, I averted my gaze, directing it towards the ground. The unspoken rule of avoiding any form of eye contact with the Omna people was etched deep within me, a boundary I dared not cross. Not on a night like this!
ENZUK POV
Tanya's grip on my arm was tight as we entered the grand dining hall and made our way through the crowd, greeting couples and friends. The event was special, and even my parents had traveled a long way to be here tonight. Carlisle and Esmene, my parents, were well-known figures in our community. In my younger years, my father used to regale me with stories of his numerous missions and his frequent service in Aro's court. However, ever since he became mated to Esmene, he was not always present in the realm.
It was my father who instilled in me the desire to follow in his footsteps and take the place he once held in Aro's court. And to some extent, I succeeded. As the second in command to Aro, I held a significant position. Yet, despite this accomplishment, my father's approval seemed elusive. It was not as much as I had anticipated. My father and Aro still had their private talks behind closed doors, but they were brief and infrequent. I couldn't help but wonder what they discussed and why their conversations didn't last long. There was an unspoken tension between them, and I couldn't shake the feeling that my father's disapproval was somehow connected to these secretive discussions.
"Son," my father said.
"Father," I acknowledged with a single nod, feeling his hand rest on my shoulder. With a smile, he looked at me while my mother enveloped me in an embrace.
"We are so overjoyed to be here," she expressed, planting a kiss on my cheek. "You look absolutely marvelous, darling."
"And so do you, mother. Not a single strand of hair out of place," I complimented, returning her smile.
"How have you been, Esmene?" Tanya interrupted, causing my mother's smile to waver slightly as she turned toward Tanya.
"I've been doing great. Thank you, Tanya, for asking." She glanced at Tanya's arm wrapped around mine and then back at me. She offered a smile but remained quiet.
I cleared my throat. "How was your trip here? I hope it wasn't too difficult."
My father chuckled, "Do you know who your mother is? Not a speck of dirt ever touches her feet. We travel in style. And it's my job to make sure she is in absolute comfort."
Esmene shook her head. "I do like to travel in style. But we started early. There were a few places we wanted to explore along the way. So overall, it was a peaceful and enjoyable journey."
As she spoke, I couldn't help but admire her grace and elegance, which seemed to radiate from within. It was no wonder my father had fallen in love with her all those years ago.
Tanya's voice once again chimed in. "I'm relieved to see you arrived here without any trouble. You certainly spoil your mate Carlisle. Hopefully, the fruit does not fall too far from the tree," Tanya remarked, a mischievous grin playing on her lips as she glanced in my direction. I tilted my head, attempting to hide the unease her words had stirred within me.
"It usually doesn't dear," Esmene replied back with a smile, "we just hope that the person who picks up that fruit is worthy of it." Tanya remained silent for a moment, pondering my mother's words, while I simply smiled at her. She gave me a playful wink before leaning towards my father and saying, "Oh look!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with delight. "Japher and Emmico. Let's go say hi, dear. I wish to see them before the ceremony begins."
My father nodded in agreement, his eyes reflecting the love he held for my mother. "Your wish is my command," he replied, his voice filled with adoration. He glanced at me briefly, a silent promise of a future conversation. "We will speak later," he said in a determined tone.
As we prepared to part ways, my mother turned to me, her voice filled with genuine warmth. "It was so nice to see you, my sweet," she said, her eyes sparkling with affection. "And…you too, Tanya. I'm sure we will meet again before the night is over."
"Yes," Tanya responded softly.
God. I loved my mother. I watched her walk away with my father.
"Your mother is such a…um. charming woman," Tanya said.
"She is indeed," I smiled.
My mother possessed an uncanny ability to perceive things others couldn't, and her cleverness was unmatched. She exuded beauty, grace, and intelligence, qualities that I longed to find in a partner of my own.
The was only one other person I knew who held those attributes. Isabella.
As I scanned the room, my eyes eventually landed on her, standing on the sidelines among the human servants. She wore a simple black dress, her hair neatly pulled back into a bun.
I knew Isabella was angry with me. I could sense the waves of anger emanating from Isabella toward me, as if her emotions were intertwined with mine. The feeling of betrayal was palpable in her presence, but deep down, she failed to comprehend the reasons behind my need to put on this facade. It was a charade that I reluctantly embraced, driven solely by the necessity to ensure her safety. Despite the weight of this burden, I had no other option but to play this role, even if it meant sacrificing my own happiness.
But damn. My mate was pissed. She was seething with rage. The intensity of her anger reverberated through every fiber of my being, as if it had taken residence in my own body. It was one of the peculiarities of being bonded to a mate - an unbreakable connection that allowed me to experience her emotions as if they were my own. However, this bond worked both ways, and I couldn't help but relish in the power it granted me.
With a mischievous smirk playing on my lips, I called upon the depths of her inner self, beckoning it to come forth and confront me. I yearned for her response, hoping that she would rise to the challenge and meet my call. Would she respond?
She blinked a few times and then slowly raised her eyes to me.
She looked absolutely stunning. While some might have considered her plain compared to the other attendees, she held a captivating allure in my eyes. I couldn't help but imagine whisking her away for the night, or even for an entire week. Her head was lowered, but her curious gaze kept darting up, observing the room with keen interest.
My mouth watered as I licked my lips, my gaze growing darker, and my heart racing with anticipation. She looked at Tanya's arm wrapped around mine and felt another wave of her anger surge through me.
I shook my head slightly. In a bold display of rebellion, I defiantly tilted my head ever so slightly, liberating myself from Tanya's firm hold. It was a calculated movement, a powerful statement that conveyed Tanya's insignificance in my life. My sole intention was to make Isabella comprehend that Tanya had no claim over my heart. It belonged solely to her, and her alone.
Suddenly, Tanya's voice broke through my trance, jolting me back to reality. Her concern was evident, etched on her face like a delicate pattern. "What's wrong?" she inquired; her voice filled with genuine worry.
I responded with a curt, clipped tone. "Nothing," I said, hoping to dismiss her concerns. But she persisted, her determination shining through as she attempted to comfort me by wrapping her arm around mine once again.
However, I couldn't let her do that. I couldn't let her assume a level of intimacy that wasn't there. "Stop," I said in a low, firm tone, my words laced with a hint of offense. I could feel her gaze on me, her eyes searching for answers.
"Is something bothering you?" she pressed further, her voice filled with a mix of worry and confusion. It was then that I realized I needed to set things straight.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to face her, my eyes meeting hers with determination. "Tanya. We are not bonded. So, please, stop hanging on to me as if we were. I said we could try, but that doesn't mean my answer is a definite yes to our union."
The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of uncertainty. Tanya's expression shifted, a mix of hurt and disappointment clouding her features.
"You know I care about you, Enzuk," she said in a soft, tender voice, her eyes filled with longing and vulnerability. "I know you said it would take time, and I respect that. But tonight, can't we just allow ourselves to be a couple, even if it's just for this moment? Everyone around us can see how deeply I care for you, it's no secret. Please, don't let me feel embarrassed or rejected in front of our friends."
"Fine," I responded with a hint of frustration in my voice. "But let's make sure it stays casual. I'm serious, Tanya. Don't make a show of us."
She nodded. "Deal. By the way, you look absolutely marvelous tonight, just as your mother said. I consider myself a fortunate woman," she remarked, a smile gracing her lips. My thoughts were still consumed by Isabella, unable to fully focus on Tanya's affectionate words. Tanya, perceiving my distracted state, stretched her body and gently placed a kiss on my cheek.
Sensing my disapproval, my eyes narrowed at her as a warning. However, she simply returned my gaze with a warm smile and nestled her head against my shoulder, seeking comfort and closeness.
As Aro entered the room through the double doors, a wave of applause erupted.
Thank goodness. Let's get this night over with already.
Aro confidently made his way to the large chair at the head of the table, his eyes scanning the room with a smile. My gaze followed his and a strange sense of fear washed over me as his eyes seemed to linger in Isabella's direction. She lowered her head and avoided his gaze. Aro continued to stare at her for a moment before locking eyes with me, as if he knew I was watching. He smiled at me, a knowing glint in his eyes, and then proceeded to address the crowd.
"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who made the effort to embrace this exceptionally memorable evening," Lord Aro expressed as he gracefully approached a grand chair positioned at the forefront of an elongated dining table.
He stopped just behind it as his eyes scanned the room, taking in the beauty of the surroundings and the faces of those who had come to celebrate with him. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of camaraderie and unity, as if everyone present shared a common purpose and understanding. The table was meticulously adorned with exquisite plates, gleaming wine glasses, and meticulously crafted name cards, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication.
Aro's smile widened. "As I glance around this evening, I am greeted by a myriad of faces. Faces that bear the weight of cherished recollections. Faces that radiate loyalty, affection, and integrity. This night symbolizes our collective strength as a community. Despite the ravages of war, the heartbreaking betrayal from those we once held dear, and the painful loss of some of our own, we have emerged triumphant in our endeavors to not only endure, but also flourish."
The room erupted in applause again and then slowly died down.
Aro smiled again, "let us all welcome this evening with open arms. What I wish is for you all to indulge in a delicious meal until you are completely satisfied. Quench your thirst with abundant drinks. Delight in the melodies and dance freely. Revel in the affection of your loved ones…whatever that entails," laughter followed, "and may we experience a joyous and festive night."
Another applause followed as Aro nodded once and settled into his grand chair. Despite my reluctance, I mustered the strength to guide Tanya toward our designated spots. My only desire was to endure this night, while also maintaining my gentlemanly demeanor.
Reaching our seats, I paused and courteously pulled out Tanya's chair. She gracefully brushed her hand over her mine. With a gentle lift of her gown, she gracefully settled into her seat. I pushed her chair in, ensuring her comfort, before taking my place beside her.
My seat was rightfully positioned on one side of Aro, while Vorro, the cunning opportunist, occupied the other side. As I settled into my seat, Vorro's gaze met mine, accompanied by a disarming smile that stretched wider when his eyes shifted towards Tanya. Despite the unsettling knowledge that Vorro had ulterior motives involving Isabella, I maintained a composed facade and reciprocated his smile. Deep down, a seething anger simmered within me, fueled by the desire to put him in his rightful place. The thought of swiftly ending his existence, slashing his throat from across the table, tantalized my mind. However, this evening held immense significance, and I refused to allow Vorro's presence to unsettle me. Especially not in front of Aro, whose opinion and favor I held dear.
In the midst of the gathering, my father and mother occupied a space that was not too distant from where I sat. Although they were not within earshot, my father's proximity to Aro, the host, was noticeably closer than that of the other guests. Every now and then, their eyes would meet, and in that fleeting moment, a silent connection seemed to pass between them. It was a mysterious understanding that eluded my comprehension. They had a unique way of communicating without uttering a single word.
As dinner was being served, my gaze was irresistibly drawn towards Isabella. I found myself stealing glances at her, completely captivated by her flawless mastery of serving etiquette and her eagerness to lend a hand in serving both the appetizers and the main course. I was genuinely impressed by her skills and dedication. It seemed as though she effortlessly navigated through our customs without a single misstep.
Yet, amidst my admiration, I couldn't help but notice a subtle hint of disgust on Isabella's face. Her lack of enthusiasm for the food did not go unnoticed by me. A mischievous smile crept onto my lips as I observed her discreetly scrunching her nose, clearly unimpressed by the culinary offerings laid before her.
"How was the hunt?" Vorro inquired, breaking my concentration on Isabella, while he savored a mouthful of his meal. Aro glanced at me with curiosity, then shifted his gaze to Vorro, who sought to clarify. "I heard you accompanied Japher on a hunt. How did it go?"
"It went well. The game is plentiful this season."
"Hmm. I should join you sometime."
Aro cleared his throat. "Norflogs?"
I shook my head. "No, Bauras."
"Ah. They provide an enjoyable hunting experience this time of year," Aro smiled warmly at me.
"They also give us a chance to express our gratitude toward our brave Omna warriors. I was happy to greet and escort him to the bathing halls, " Tanya said playfully, causing me to almost choke on my food. Feeling a bit uncomfortable, I quickly cleared my throat. Aro's eyes shifted back and forth between Tanya and me, and he chuckled before signaling for another bottle of liknoi.
"Traditions are wonderful," he replied, a mischievous grin forming on his face. "But I'm sure it was more than tradition for you two. I'm also sure he was a willing participant."
"You would think," she smiled as she delicately sipped her liknoi. Her eyes twinkled impishly as she continued, her voice laced with amusement, "He's so dedicated to the realm, I had a hard time pulling him away from his royal obligations. Oh I got him, eventually."
I tried to maintain a composed facade, even as my heart sank and a bitter taste filled my mouth. Vorro, ever the jester, let out a hearty laugh, his eyes crinkling with mirth. "I'm surprised you had to do any convincing. Enzuk seems more than willing to help Melxa out with his projects. In fact, he seems to have all the time in the world for that, which are completely outside his duty to the realm."
My gaze shot up from my plate, a growl escaping my lips as I glared daggers at Vorro. This was neither the time nor the place to discuss such matters. Tanya, sensing the tension, looked between us with a furrowed brow. "W-what work?" she stammered; her confusion evident.
Aro interjected smoothly, his voice calm and measured. "Academic work," he clarified, his tone leaving no room for further discussion. "Work that is best discussed at a later time," he added firmly, shooting a pointed look at Vorro.
Vorro's smile faltered slightly, a hint of remorse flickering in his eyes. "Of course, my league. Sorry. I got carried away."
Aro's stern expression softened, his gaze shifting to an approaching figure. "See that you don't again," he warned quietly, his voice carrying a weight of authority. I did a double take when I saw Isabella carrying a full bottle of liknoi. Aro held up his glass as he eyed Isabella with a look of interest. She was careful to keep her head down as she leaned forward to pour the liquid in to Aro's glass.
Although, nothing came out.
She looked at the bottle, her eyes widening in surprise as she realized it was still sealed shut. Her heart sank, and she felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. "Oh," she stammered, her voice trembling with apology, her cheeks turning a deep shade of red.
Desperate to rectify her mistake, she quickly reached out and took hold of the bottle, her hands wrapped around the smooth surface. With determination etched on her face, she pulled and tugged with all her might, her muscles straining against the stubborn cork. There was silence between us, except for the sound of Aro's finger tapping impatiently against his glass.
As the seconds ticked by, her frustration grew, and her embarrassment intensified. And yes. I felt every bit of her embarrassment inside me. I was hard not to take the bottle from her and open it myself. But I didn't want to make her look incompetent. Her cheeks burned hotter, and she nervously pressed her lips together, trying to regain her composure. "S-sorry," she stuttered, her voice barely audible, "It-it's stuck."
I winced. It was painful to witness her struggle, her voice filled with anxiety and her body language betraying her unease.
"Um," she began, her voice trailing off uncertainly, "I-I-I'll go and..."
"Give me the bottle," Aro said to her.
With shaky hands she handed it to him, clearly embarrassed. With ease Aro opened the bottle and poured himself a glass. Isabella's shoulders slumped. "S-so-"
"Stop speaking human!" Vorro seethed out in Isabella's language. "Or I will teach you what it is like to be silent forever. Know your place!"
"She wasn't talking to you," I countered in Omna. Aro held up a hand, and then sighed as he glanced between us.
Aro then turned his attention to Isabella who stood with her head down, nervous and out of place. "That was careless and clumsy of you." She nodded once. "See that you do not make that mistake again," he said in a low tone. He flicked his hand. "Get back to your work."
I watched as Isabella scurried away, her hurried steps reflecting her inner turmoil. But even from a distance, I could sense the weight of her sadness, the heaviness of her fear, and the burning embarrassment that consumed her.
The tears that threatened to spill from her eyes were a testament to the overwhelming emotions she was trying to suppress. I longed to reach out to her, to offer comfort and solace in her time of need. My heart ached to hold her in my arms, to provide a safe haven where she could let go and find solace.
But as much as I desired to be there for her, another emotion surged within me. Anger. A fierce determination to protect her from those who had caused her such distress. Vorro, the source of her suffering, had crossed a line, and I couldn't stand idly by.
I yearned to confront Vorro, to unleash my pent-up fury upon him. I wanted Isabella to witness the strength and power within me as I beat the life from him.
"Stupid humans," Tanya scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain, as she brought her drink to her lips for another sip. The frustration in her tone was evident as she continued, "They really are dense." Her words were followed by a mischievous giggle, as if she found their ignorance amusing.
"Dense, yes," Vorro chimed in, his voice filled with a mix of amusement and arrogance. His gaze lingered on Isabella, who was across the dining hall, and he added with a smirk, "but still worthy of bedding." He glanced at me, his eyes filled with a knowing look, as he brought his glass to his lips. I averted my gaze and focused on finishing my meal.
Tanya, however, seemed to have a different perspective. With a warm smile, she countered Vorro's statement, her tail gently wrapping around mine. "Only for those who don't have a true mate," she said, her voice filled with a sense of contentment. "Nothing can replace being with your own mate." Her words hit a nerve, causing my jaw to tense, as I moved my tail moved away from hers.
"True," Vorro said, nonchalantly dismissing her words, "but until then, no harm in having a little fun. Right?"
"Absolutely," Aro agreed, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Humans are phenomenal in that regard."
Vorro's smile grew wider. "I'm glad you agree my Lord. Have you already selected a companion for tonight?"
Raising an eyebrow and flashing a wicked smile, Aro replied, "My bed is never empty, Vorro. I always embrace the pleasures of the night without fail. However, if you're inquiring about my interest in this new human, I have none. She is appealing, but I have other plans for the night."
Vorro's tongue darted out to moisten his lips, a glimmer of intrigue in his eyes. "I'm relieved to hear that. I think she possesses a certain attractiveness. I find myself pondering whether she is inclined toward submission or possesses a fiery spirit in bed. I must admit, I am particularly drawn to those who scratch and fight. If she can scream that would make it worth it."
Vorro had an insatiable hunger for power and possessed a narrow perspective. His days were spent skulking around, constantly searching for a way to elevate himself and become my equal. From my point of view, his loyalty was questionable, and I couldn't comprehend why Aro would keep such a deceitful and cowardly individual in his inner circle. If given the opportunity, I firmly believed that Vorro would go as far as killing Aro just to attain ultimate power. Despite my intense dislike for him, I managed to maintain my composure and forced a faint smile, fully aware that he was observing and eagerly anticipating any overreaction from me.
"That doesn't surprise me," I replied to Vorro.
"Oh. Is that so?" Vorro smiled at me.
"Yes, it is so. I'm sure indulging in the company of defenseless female humans, who are seemingly content with whatever little attention you can offer, can be quite enjoyable. After all, you aren't a Lord, or even a commander. But for a human, I suppose those things don't matter. You have very little to live up to with a human."
His eyes narrowed at me.
But I continued, "So, it must be exhilarating to finally be with a female who cannot refuse your advances due to your station. I'm happy you found your calling. Forced pleasure is not always enjoyable. But I wouldn't expect you to know that, since you seem to target those who can't say no. I, on the other hand, prefer a woman who chooses me."
Aro chuckled. "Let's keep the night light, shall we? Tonight is about celebrating our independence. Pleasure, forced or not, is the rightful possession of all Omna. Especially tonight. I imagine every human female will be used to the full."
Vorro nodded. "Some might not last the night," he added as he took a bite of his food. "I'm glad you already have plans, Enzuk," he said looking at Tanya. "More humans for the rest of us."
Tanya's radiant smile illuminated her face as she gently placed her delicate hand on top of mine. The warmth of her touch sent a surge of tingling sensations coursing through my body, yet I fought against the instinct to recoil. Despite the searing sensation that seemed to intensify with every passing second, I resisted the urge to push her hand away.
Deep down, I knew that maintaining this facade was crucial. The pretense I had carefully constructed needed to be upheld, no matter the cost. Tanya's presence in my life was a charade, a carefully orchestrated act to conceal the truth that lay beneath the surface.
As her hand lingered on mine, I couldn't help but wonder if she could sense the turmoil raging within me. Did she catch a glimpse of the pain etched in my eyes, masked by a forced smile? Or was she oblivious to the internal battle that threatened to consume me?
"We always tend to lose humans on this night," Aro said, his voice dripping with amusement, as if he relished the banter between us. His eyes twinkled mischievously, revealing a glimmer of his devilish nature. It was evident that he took pleasure in these playful exchanges.
"Thank the gods for Melxa's human breeding program," Vorro added.
"Hm. How is the progress of that program, by the way?" Aro inquired, clearly intrigued.
"Enzuk?" Vorro directed the question toward me, causing me to look up in surprise. "You often spend time there. Have you heard any updates?"
I shook my head, my response curt. "No, I haven't," I replied. While I was aware of the existence of the breeding program, I never bothered to delve into its intricacies. It had always been Melxa's pet project. However, it wasn't until Isabella came into my life that I truly understood the gravity of his involvement with humans. Or even cared, for that matter. Trying to lighten the tense atmosphere, I asked, "What have you heard about it?" I was doing my utmost to restrain myself from strangling the bastard, and I was fairly certain he knew it.
Vorro shrugged nonchalantly. "Not much. But the concept does worry me."
"Worry?" Aro echoed. "In what way?"
"Well, should we really be breeding humans at such an excessive rate?" Vorro pondered. "I mean, the realm already has numerous enslaved humans. I just don't think it's in the best interest of the Omna people to have an abundance of humans running amok. There are only so many subordinate positions available, and I fail to see where these newcomers from Earth fit into our society."
Before I could respond, Aro nodded with a smile. "Please, do explain." I bit my tongue, feigning curiosity.
"It's one thing to have humans bred and trained here on Novis, where slavery and servitude are all they've ever known since birth. They have no concept of any other way of life. But these new humans from Earth... they have different perspectives. They could easily adopt these perspectives and cause trouble for the otherwise submissive and obedient humans."
Aro nodded, understanding the concern.
"So, you fear a potential uprising of humans?" I asked.
"I didn't say fear," he glared at me. "Just concerned."
I nodded and then spoke. "The humans from Earth speak various languages, languages that the humans born on Novis cannot comprehend. As you know, the humans bred here are only taught basic commands in Omna. Apart from that, they lack the ability to communicate in any ancient or current Earth languages. Therefore, the likelihood of a riot occurring is slim due to the significant communication barrier."
"Not humans purchased for personal use, though. They have implants that allow them to understand the Omna language. While they may not respond in Omna, they can comprehend it. I don't agree with that either."
"What's your point, then?" I asked.
"My point is, what if those who understand Omna and those who speak the same language unite? They would not only understand our conversations, but they could also develop their own languages, ones we might not comprehend unless we are well-versed in Earth's current languages. They might even create a new form of communication altogether. I'm just saying, embedding humans into our society is making us a little too comfortable. Our past mistakes were born out of trust in them, and I don't wish to witness history repeating itself."
Aro declared, "None of us share that sentiment."
"What do you propose?" I asked.
Vorro's gaze shifted between Aro and me before he spoke, "If I were in your position, Commander, I would enforce the law that permits only a limited number of humans to reside on Novis. Furthermore, I would eliminate those humans who have already experienced life on Earth. They do not deserve a second chance on Novis. They have been tainted, having tasted the sweet nectar of freedom. Even if their ideas can be suppressed, the memories and yearnings for liberation will persist. Inevitably, they will inflict harm upon our society and infect others with their venomous ideals."
"The enforcement of the law that governs the human population is subject to constant fluctuations. These fluctuations are primarily influenced by various forms of entertainment, such as the one you indulged in last night. I am curious, how many humans did you request to your chambers? Five? Or was it ten."
Vorro cleared his throat.
I continued. "I guess the number isn't really that important. But, if my observation serves me right, the count of individuals who entered your chambers did not match the count of those who exited. I closely monitor these numbers. It is worth noting that if the human population were to decrease, it might hinder your ability to enjoy such pleasurable nights in the future."
Aro let out a chuckle and casually gestured with his hand. "Vorro, I understand your concern. While most humans bred on Novis are typically well-disciplined, there's always that slim possibility of an unexpected transformation. Thankfully, Enzuk diligently keeps watch and ensures the law is upheld when necessary."
With a smile, Tanya affirmed, "I agree. Besides, we Omna women possess an unparalleled ability to provide pleasure, surpassing that of any mere human." As her gaze shifted toward me, an internal cringe consumed me. Nevertheless, I maintained a facade of a smile.
Aro mirrored my expression, responding with a smile of his own, "I dare not engage in a debate with an Omna woman."
As our meal and dessert came to an end, Vorro relinquished his attempts to provoke a reaction from me. The atmosphere shifted, and our conversations shifted toward lighter topics. We delved into Tanya's recent shopping adventures, Aro's fascinating experiences on different planets, and the various strategies one could employ in the art of hunting. With each passing moment, the effects of liknoi became more apparent in the room, as laughter and jovial conversations filled the dining hall, creating a joyous ambiance.
Aro finally stood, with a smile, causing the noise in the dining hall to gradually fade away. "I hope everyone is having a lovely evening thus far."
The room erupted with applause and laughter.
Aro nodded. "Well, keep it going then. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that the meal we just had, accompanied by such delightful company, was truly exceptional. And judging by the laughter that fills the air, it's evident that we're all thoroughly enjoying ourselves! It only seems fitting to carry this joyous atmosphere into the ballroom, where we'll be treated to music and dancing. Please, let us continue."
The crowd again erupted in cheers and applause, prompting some to rise from their seats and make their way toward the ballroom. Aro's gaze shifted from me to Tanya. Tanya blushed when his eyes lingered on her. "Enzuk," he said as he extended his hand toward her. "May I?" he asked, glancing at me, "May I have the honor of sharing the first dance with Tanya? I know it may seem selfish."
Tanya, overcome with excitement and admiration, seemed ready to accept the offer before I even had a chance to respond. Her breath quickened, and her eyes widened as she looked at Aro in awe and wonder. I nodded.
"Yes. You may," I replied. Taking her delicate hand in mine, I gently placed it in Aro's awaiting hand. Aro's face lit up with a warm smile as his fingers closed around hers.
Together, we all stepped into the grand ballroom, the air thick with anticipation and the soft melodies of the orchestra. As Aro and Tanya glided across the polished marble floor, her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue. She held her other hand over her heart, a gesture of both awe and gratitude, as if this moment was a dream come true. With each step, her confidence grew, and a smug smile graced her lips, directed at the curious onlookers. She reveled in the envy and admiration that danced in their eyes, relishing in the attention she had garnered. In that moment, I was sure she felt like the bell of the ball, the center of the universe.
My heart raced as I continued to scan the room, my eyes darting from one corner to another. The dimly lit space seemed to mock my efforts, concealing Isabella's presence like a well-kept secret. Every passing second felt like an eternity, amplifying my anxiety and fueling my determination to find her.
Isabella's absence on such a foreboding night only intensified my unease. I knew the tradition of this night was a cruel one, a twisted celebration where humans were subjected to the whims of fate. It was a night where fear and despair danced hand in hand, and the boundaries between reality and nightmare blurred. At least for humans.
The thought of Isabella being caught in the clutches of this malevolent tradition sent a chill down my spine. The thought of being separated from her on a night like this, was unbearable.
Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught my attention. My heart skipped a beat as I locked eyes with Isabella who was still in the dining room. Relief washed over me, replacing the unease that had consumed me moments before. She was discreetly maneuvering through the dining hall, her delicate hands carefully balancing a tray of dirty dishes. A smile tugged at the corners of my lips as our eyes met, a silent acknowledgment passing between us. Isabella's beauty, both outward and inward, radiated from her, illuminating the room even in its darkest corners.
It wasn't long before Aro, with a mischievous smile on his face, brought back a blushing Tanya to my side. Had their dance finished so soon?
By the way Tanya looked at Aro, it was clear that she didn't want her dance with Aro to come to an end. Yet, with a mix of reluctance and obedience, she allowed Aro to return her to me. I eyed Tanya as her gaze lingered on Aro. I smiled as I took Tanya's hand in mine for our first dance together. Afterall it was tradition.
Stepping onto the dance floor, I guided her gracefully through the crowd. The music filled the air, creating a magical atmosphere that seemed to envelop us. But even as we moved in harmony, Tanya's eyes kept drifting back to Aro, who was now seated on a large golden throne, observing the dances unfold before him.
There was an undeniable longing in Tanya's gaze as she stole glances at Aro. It was as if she was torn between the desire to be with him and the now duty to be by my side. Her eyes held fascination and curiosity, as if she couldn't help but be drawn to Aro's captivating presence.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn't help but ask, "Did you enjoy your dance with Aro?"
A small smile played on her lips as her eyes quickly darted to meet mine. "Oh yes," she replied, her voice slightly trembling. "I-I think we shared a moment."
"Do you?" I inquired.
She nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "There's something so captivating about him. It makes me wonder..."
"Wonder about what?" I pressed.
"Why he's never taken a mate," she mused, her eyes filled with admiration. "I mean, just look at him. The power he exudes, his elegance. He is a Lord. Why would a Lord ever be without a mate?"
I shrugged. "He carries many responsibilities as a Lord," I offered, glancing at her longing eyes.
"A lord still has needs," she said in low voice.
In that moment, a realization dawned upon me. There was a certain joy I felt knowing that her gaze was directed at Aro instead of me. It was something I couldn't quite grasp before, but now I understood what Tanya saw in me. Power. Perhaps that was all I represented to her – a ticket to a higher status. Observing her desire for Aro somehow eased my own conflicted feelings towards Isabella. Maybe Tanya loved the idea of being with me, but when faced with a choice, she seemed to gravitate towards the one with the most power.
I couldn't help but smile.
"What?" she asked, clearly curious about my amusement. But I just shook my head. "You're smiling, like my thoughts are silly. Don't you ever wonder why he's not with anyone?" she questioned further.
"Sometimes," I replied, still smiling. "But I believe he has his reasons."
As I pondered her question further, her voice lowered, almost as if she was sharing a secret. "Out of all the women here, he chose me," she whispered. "Did you see how he chose to have the first dance with me? Maybe, seeing me made him long for a mate."
I chuckled, partly amused by her sudden seriousness. "Maybe you are the one to claim his heart," I suggested playfully. Her eyes widened, and she shook her head vigorously, as if denying the possibility. It was clear that my words had rattled her.
She took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "No, no. I could never capture the attention of someone as powerful and influential as Aro." Interesting choice of words, I thought.
"Well, you never know what fate has in store for you," I said, giving her a reassuring smile. "Sometimes, the most unexpected romances are the most extraordinary ones. Perhaps, you possess a certain charm that captures his attention in a way no one else can." She looked at me skeptically, with a glimmer of hope flickering in her eyes. Then she shook her head again.
"I have found my mate," she quickly asserted, looking at me with conviction. "You are my love. You know that."
But before I could respond, a loud crashing noise interrupted our conversation. All heads turned towards the source of the commotion. My eyes zeroed in on Isabella, who was now on the floor amidst shattered dishes and covered in remnants of food. The room fell into a stunned silence as everyone took in the scene. But as the initial shock wore off, a wave of amusement washed over the room. Laughter, at first hesitant and stifled, began to bubble up from the crowd. It started with a few chuckles, then grew into hearty guffaws, echoing off the walls and filling the space with a contagious mirth. Isabella's face flushed with embarrassment as she desperately attempted to regain her composure and stand up. My mouth fell open, momentarily rendering me speechless. Without thinking, I instinctively took a step closer to her, silently offering my support and understanding.
However, as I glanced at the people surrounding us, a surge of irritation coursed through me. With a piercing glare, I silently chastised them for their lack of empathy, their insensitivity amplifying my frustration. I glanced at Aro. His eyes were fixed on her, piercing and deliberate, yet devoid of any amusement. There was no trace of a smile on his face, nor any indication that he intended to offer any assistance to her. I couldn't help but wonder what thoughts were running through Aro's mind as he observed Isabella's predicament. Was it amusement masked by a poker face, or was there something more profound at play? His passive stance left me with more questions than answers, leaving me to speculate about his motives and intentions in making tonight Isabella's first assignment.
I took another step in her direction as she slowly began to stand. Her legs trembled, struggling as she worked to support her weight. My eyes quickly noticed a small cut on the delicate skin of her hand. It was a testament to the pain she must have been in. As my eyes scanned the scene, they landed on Vorro, who stood ominously close to her. His presence angered me, and I couldn't help but question his sudden proximity to Isabella. Did he have a hand in her fall? The thought gnawed at me, fueling my suspicion. The timing was too convenient, too perfect for Vorro to be standing there, as if waiting for her to stumble.
As Isabella finally regained her balance and found her footing, her relief was short-lived as another guest swiped their tail across her legs, causing her to stumble once again. The unfortunate misstep sent her crashing down, her body colliding with shards of broken glass and remnants of food scattered across the floor. A sharp cry of pain escaped her lips, echoing through the room.
The first fall had already proven to be a daunting task for Isabella, and now faced with this unexpected second tumble, the prospect of getting back on her feet seemed almost impossible. The pain radiating from her body only intensified, making each movement an agonizing challenge.
Something in me tore apart, a dark and malevolent force awakening within. As I witnessed the scene unfold before my eyes, a surge of primal fury coursed through my veins. My nostrils flared, inhaling the scent of injustice, while my once gentle gaze transformed into an abyss of wrath.
Without a second thought, my body propelled forward, driven by an uncontrollable urge to protect. The guest, who had callously caused her stumble, became the target of my unleashed fury. With a thunderous impact, I propelled him against the wall, the sheer force of my assault reverberating through the room. A haze of red clouded my vision, obscuring rational thought and leaving only a seething anger in its wake. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, fueling my every move. With a primal roar, I threw him to the unforgiving floor, his body crashing against it with a resounding thud.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still, the air thick with tension as the room fell into an eerie silence. Every gaze in the room fixated on the scene unfolding before them, their eyes widening in shock and disbelief. The weight of my fury was palpable, suffocating the atmosphere.
As I stood above him, my hand instinctively balled into a fist, hovering menacingly above his vulnerable neck. His eyes, once filled with arrogance, now mirrored a profound sense of terror. I paused as I stared at him. The room remained frozen, held captive by the intensity of the moment. The silence was broken only by the ragged breaths that escaped my lips, a testament to the raw power that had consumed me. In that instant, I had become an embodiment of wrath, a force to be reckoned with.
I surveyed the multitude of expressions etched on the faces surrounding me, each one a reflection of the bewildering scene that had just unfolded. My mother's eyes, usually warm and comforting, now mirrored astonishment and concern as she shifted her gaze between Isabella and me, desperately seeking clarity.
Turning my attention back to the guest, I felt a surge of anger coursing through my veins, fueling the intensity of my glare. "How can you be so oblivious to the fact that she is an integral part of vital research? Who do you think you are, to so callously destroy something of such immense importance?" The guest, his face a mask of denial, quickly shook his head in a feeble attempt to dismiss the weight of his actions.
Vorro's face twisted into a malicious smile as he observed from the depths of the shadows, relishing in the sight before him. Meanwhile, Aro's expression betrayed his discontentment, his face contorted into a less than pleased look.
In the hushed stillness that enveloped the room, a heavy air of tension settled upon us. Amidst this palpable silence, my eyes were drawn to my father, who took a hesitant step forward, his face etched with concern. His gaze locked with Aro's, and for what felt like an eternity, they engaged in an unspoken exchange of thoughts and emotions.
Aro, seated on his ornate throne, seemed to be contemplating something of great significance. His piercing eyes bore into my father's, as if searching for answers to questions only they knew. The weight of their shared history hung in the air, casting a shadow over the room.
Finally, breaking the stillness, Aro rose from his imposing seat. The gravity of his movement commanded attention, and the crowd instinctively parted, creating a path for him. As Aro drew nearer, I could feel the intensity of his gaze fixated upon me. It was as if he could see through the layers of my being, peering into my soul with an unwavering focus. The silence that had enveloped the room was now amplified, as if it were a living entity, holding its breath in anticipation of what was to come.
He came to a halt right in front of me, his gaze shifting momentarily to Isabella, who remained on the floor in a state of shock, before returning to me. Aro then turned his attention to the gathered crowd. "Please accept my apologies, ladies and gentlemen," he addressed them. Aro reached out his hand to the guest who still lay on the floor, helping him back up. "It is not fitting for our brethren to engage in conflict on this sacred evening. Enzuk is my trusted confidant, and although his words and actions may seem impulsive and difficult to comprehend, he has been involved in crucial endeavors as part of a recent mission. He is deeply passionate about his work, and I am certain that he did not mean what he said or did."
Aro's gaze narrowed as he looked at me, and I nodded in response, understanding the unspoken message.
Reluctantly, I turned my attention to the guest whom I had forcefully brought down to the ground and offered him a bow. I would have done it again. "I apologize. I was not myself. The influence of the drink got the better of me." I despised the words that escaped my lips; they were nothing but a deceitful facade. If that guest were to harm Isabella again, I would gladly tear him apart. I felt his hand touch the top of my head, a sign of accepting my apology, and I swiftly rose to my feet.
Aro expressed his approval with a nod before shifting his gaze toward Isabella. "You. You have caused enough trouble tonight. Enzuk, escort her to Melxa. Inform him that I am greatly disappointed."
Disregarding the curious gazes directed at me, I moved forward and extended a helping hand to Isabella, assisting her in regaining her balance. With no intention of attracting further attention, I swiftly guided her out of the room as best as her injured legs would allow. As we hurriedly turned a corner, I couldn't help but notice the tears streaking down her face, as she held her bloody hand, her expression filled with more anger than sadness. What could have possibly transpired? Had Vorro truly committed some wrongdoing? I had no words for the situation, but I hated seeing her this way.
I knew that later on, Aro would want to discuss this matter with me, and I was aware that the consequences of my actions could potentially be severe. However, in that moment, my sole focus was on Isabella. I couldn't bear to see her in pain, consumed by sadness, and burdened by her injuries. All I wanted was to alleviate her suffering and make it all disappear.
As we walked together, Isabella's tears gradually transformed into small hiccups, her frail body limping beside me, still bearing the remnants of food that she had slipped in. Without any hesitation, I instinctively gathered her delicate form into my arms, cradling her gently against my chest. She immediately accepted my embrace, clutching onto my robe tightly with a fist and seeking solace by burying her face in me.
I came to a halt in the hallway, tightly embracing her petite figure against my chest. In that moment, I could sense the immense anguish she was experiencing, along with a multitude of emotions swirling within her. They swirled in me too. I could feel her pain.
My mate was shattered and broken. Yes. My mate. No matter what judgments or opinions others held about her, she was undeniably mine. It didn't matter how insignificant or ordinary she appeared to be. In my eyes, she held immeasurable value. Yes, she was human, but also my possession, my cherished treasure, and no one could lay claim to her like I could.
In that moment, it was my utmost priority to mend her wounded soul. Tenderly resting my head against hers, I offered solace as she wept against my chest.
"I am sorry," I murmured softly, my voice filled with genuine remorse. Originally intending to head toward Melxa, my path diverted toward my chambers instead.
Hmmmm. Private chamber time.
Thoughts?
