Today was supposed to be a relaxing day. A take it slow kind of day. There was nothing special about this beach, neither of them had any plans that they wanted to do. They were supposed to just come to the beach and chill. Do nothing. Enjoy the uncharacteristically nice weather. He looked up at the sky and smiled. Yep, it was a good day. Not a cloud in the sky and it was nice and warm. Not too warm either though Ziva would probably complain that it wasn't warm enough. It needed to be a heatwave before she would say that it was properly warm. Even then she wasn't as uncomfortable as the rest of them unless they were stuck in the car or an un-air-conditioned office.
But it wasn't the heat that was making what was supposed to be a relaxing day not relaxing. It turned out that both of them were really bad at just sitting still. At least around each other. They always seemed to be doing something. On a case, teasing each other, messing around, taunting each other (was that the same as teasing? He felt like it was different), walking, running, sparring. The list was endless and it all boiled down to the same thing, they were always doing something. Oh, sure, they had their movie nights were they just sat (sometimes closer than absolutely necessary) and watched a movie but somehow that was different than during the day. They were never like that during the day. Day time was for doing things. Being somewhat active. Getting things done. Sitting around didn't do any of that. Hence why neither of them could pick a spot on the beach to sit and watch the world go by like Tony had originally suggested.
People watching was always fun. People could act really odd without even knowing it. Also, there was something fun about watching people go about their normal lives and not having to involve yourself in it. But neither of them felt like doing that.
Here they were, on a beach, as was their wont these days, and Tony didn't actually feel like doing anything. He wasn't even bored or anything, he just didn't feel like doing anything. Which definitely was weird for him because he always seemed to need to be occupied. He needed to be doing something. Ziva was actually better at doing nothing than him. Or at least being still while doing something. By today that's what he wanted to do. The question was, did Ziva?
"I kinda just want to chill and relax today," he told her. "Feel like just doing a bit of sunbathing?"
"I do not mind sunbathing," she agreed far more easily than he thought she would.
"Great," he clapped his hands together. "Let's do that then."
So, that's what they did. This time they hadn't made the mistake of not bringing anything to lie on. In fact, since that very annoying day they had made sure to each have a towel stored in the boot for such an opportunity. Big towels. It didn't stop all the sand from getting on them but it was better than nothing.
"Pity you don't have a nice, little bikini to sunbathe in," he leered at her, raking his eyes up and down her suggestively.
She smirked at him and deliberately walked over to a patch of sand just beyond him swaying her hips as she went.
"Who says I do not?"
His brain short-circuited for a split second before what she said sunk in.
"Wait? What? You have a bikini? We can go back to the car and get it, you know?"
She didn't say anything except give him that infuriating smirk of hers. Did that mean she was teasing him or not?
And she was walking in the opposite direction of the car. Come on! He looked over to the car park and had the crazy idea that he could go and look for this alleged bikini but then his brain started working again and he didn't.
"Did you not want to sunbathe, Tony?"
It turned out that she was teasing. Maybe. He still wasn't sure about the whole bikini in her car as she refused to say either way. Which was just unfair in his opinion. She shouldn't tease him like that. One of these days he was going to have to see her in a bikini. Was that creepy of him? Eh, it was him and Ziva, they had said far weirder and inappropriate things to each other. And he's definitely thought inappropriate things but he wasn't going to go there right now. Not that he was going to say the bikini comment out loud because despite popular belief he didn't have a death wish.
But it didn't really matter so much because he couldn't bring himself to care anymore. It turned out that just lying back on the sand really was relaxing. All his thoughts just slipped away leaving this feeling of calm and serenity and -
"Argh!"
A face full of water. Wait. He spluttered and wiped at his face. A peaceful of water? He heard a chuckle, a very familiar chuckle. Opening his eyes and blinking away the remaining water droplets he saw Ziva looming over him with grin, her water bottle still poised for an attack.
"I'm going to get you for that," he threatened, reaching for his own bottle.
A look of pure mischief was on Ziva's face. That never boded well for him.
"You are going to have to catch me first," she declared, running off before he could react.
He swore to himself as he scrambled to his feet. He should have known better than to say that before standing up - he'd given her a completely unnecessary head start. Hell, she was already a speck in the distance. How did she run so fast? On sand too.
Nonetheless, he still shouted after her as be started running, "I'm going to get you!"
