Derrick sat alone outside of the school as always. He was always discriminated against because of him being half bunny and half fox. Everyone called him a funny or a box because of it. He would get things thrown at him and be shoved against the lockers. The best thing he can do is avoid everyone as much as he can. He had no hope for himself. No friends, no chances at anything. He can only see himself as a failure. The day was over so he can go home now. On the way home, He took out some cigarettes he secretly purchased from a liquor store and lit one in his mouth. He may seem like a rebellious type kid who hates his parents, but it's the opposite. He was a very loving kid to his family. As soon as he reached home, he threw out his cigarette on the road next to the trash while it was still lit. He got inside his house to see if there was anything to eat.
"nothing again. I hope mom will get us something. Maybe fish."
Derrick sat down on the kitchen table to do his work. The same old boring math and English. History was no problem because he was a history nerd and it was easy but he hated writing and math. An hour passed. Derrick was asleep on the couch waiting for his parents to come home. Violet came home early because it was a half day for her so she was asleep too. Derrick remembered the time when he was younger. He was a very reckless and careless kid. Every day was another idea for disaster. He got a snow sled from the garage and rode it from upstairs to outside. He would climb trees with nothing but a rope tied to his ankle and scare his sister all the time. But when he was in bunny burrow, he would take all of his energy out there with him and that surely meant something was bound to happen. He had his cousins drive a tractor full speed while he was on a skateboard tied to the back of it. Despite Derrick almost dying from that experience, he has never broken a bone. Derrick really preferred to be in bunny burrow because of the open space and-
"DERRICK, DERRICK WAKE UP!"
Derrick woke up to his sister panicking. There was a smell of burning trash in the air.
"THERES A FIRE IN THE FRONT YARD"
With groggy eyes, Derrick stood up and ran to the front yard. He saw the piles of trash on fire in front of his house and it was growing to the grass on the lawn. Without hesitating, Derrick grabbed the gardening hose.
"violet, turn the water on."
Violet stood there in shock just looking at the fire, not moving an inch.
"VIOLET, TURN THE WATER ON." Still no response.
Derrick got frustrated and ran to the faucet. The water sprayed all over the lawn until Derrick got control of it. He sprayed the fire with water but it was still going and creeping closer to the house. Derrick kept watering the fire, his heart pounding, his face feeling hot from the fire and his paws were shaking. He kept his stance even though the grass fire was inching closer. In response to the fire coming closer, Derrick slowly walked closer to the fire. Violet looked at Derrick with fear and awe in her eyes. The rest of the neighborhood walked outside and watched as Derrick heroically stood his ground trying desperately to put out the trash fire. 3 minutes later, the fire department arrived to put the rest of the fire. Derrick's eyes were tearing up from the heat and could barley keep his eyes open. He covered his eyes with his arm and tried to Sit down on the patio. Violet was clinging onto his arm tightly. One of the firefighters walked up to Derrick to check on him.
"good job kid, you saved us a bit of time."
"Thanks, i tried." Derrick said with his arm still over his eyes.
"you tried good enough, son. Let me take a look" Derrick slowly lowered his arm to show the firefighter his eyes. The light stung his eyes and they were all red as if he was crying.
"Now i recognize you. You're the Wilde's kid aren't ya. you'll be okay, kid." The firefighter poured water on his eyes. And gave him a cloth to help ease the pain.
"Just don't put fires out without proper eye protection."
"okay, i got it" Derrick replied with a wet cloth over his eyes. As the firefighters began to pack things up, Nick and Judy drove up to their driveway. Judy saw Derrick with a cloth over his eyes.
"DERRICK!" Judy ran to her children. Violet was still clinging onto Derricks arm.
"Mom? Is that you?"
"yes honey it's me" Judy hugged Derrick and violet close.
Nick looked at both of them from the burn site.
"so what happened?" Nick asked the firefighter.
"your boy over there grabbed a garden hose and put out as much as he could. Honestly, if it wasn't for him, the fire would have been a lot bigger than what we put out."
"is my son going to be okay?"
"he'll be fine. The smoke created by the fire had things in it that caused him bad eye irritation. It shouldn't be anything too serious but if it continues, then take him to the hospital."
"are you sure he's going to be okay?"
"yeah of course. I had it, some of my boys had it. It's a pain in the ass, or in this case the eyes, but he'll be fine"
Nick chuckled and patted him on his back.
"thank you for your service"
"no, thank you officer Wilde for your service."
the firefighters got inside their truck. With a loud roar from the engine, they left.
nick ran over to Derrick and hugged him close.
"I'm proud of you kid. You saved the neighborhood."
"thanks dad"
Derrick may have saved the neighborhood but he was the one who almost destroyed it. Derrick thought to himself, 'I seriously hope they never know it was me'.
The next day in school, Derrick had to wear sunglasses to prevent his eyes getting more irritated but that did get him more bullied.
"Hey freak, decided to change your look? Well you look more stupid."
Without warning, he was shoved against the lockers, his sunglasses fell off his face revealing his irritated eyes which are a shade of red. He covered his eyes with his arm to prevent the lights from irritating them more.
"aww are you crying freak?"
Derrick grabbed his sunglasses off the floor and ran off to the library while stumbling and running into other students. On his way to the library, he ran into Jasmine, the girl he has a crush on. Jasmine is a short wolf with pretty blue eyes and she was always in the library reading. She wasn't necessarily a loner because she does have a lot of friends but she prefers to be in the library most of the time.
"Jasmine? I'm sorry."
Derrick ran into the Library and found a seat in the back. He took off his sunglasses and put some eye drops in his eyes to try to make them feel better. He covered them trying not to cry and Jasmine was behind him reading so he tried his best not to embarrass himself more.
"it's okay, school is almost over and it's a Friday." He told to himself.
The bell rang and Derrick walked to his next class trying to keep a low profile and away from his bullies. He entered the class and sat in the back as always. He put his face in his work as he was barley making it through the day.
"Mr. Wilde, no sunglasses in class." The teacher said in a commanding voice
"ma'am, I need them, I got into an accident."
"I don't care, no sunglasses in class. If I say it one more time, I'll send you to the principals office"
Derrick took his glasses off to reveal a pair of completely bloodshot eyes full of yellow discharge. Derrick covered them with his arms.
"Mr Wilde, eyes at the front board now"
Derrick tried his best to keep them covered as much as possible but the light burned his eyes so much that it was hard for him to even look up for a second. It was too much for Derrick so he put his glasses on and ran to the bathroom while jasmine looked at him feeling sorry for him the whole time. He was in so much pain that his hands started to shake.
after the school day ended, Derrick saw his mom pull up to the loading area. Derrick was more depressed than ever. He got inside the car crying.
"mom, I can't go here anymore. Not even the teachers respect me."
Judy looked at Derrick and hugged him tightly.
"I'm sorry my love. I try everything I can to keep you safe, but I feel like I'm not done enough. I promise I'll have a talk to the principal tomorrow about what is going on."
Derrick didn't say anything else, he just kept hugging his mom tightly.
