Chapter Seventeen

Breaking Dawn 29-33

"Defection," Edward read and then glared at Alice, who bowed her head. They were both thinking about her odd behavior.

Mentions it wasn't until the sun rose and I knew Renesmee would be up soon I wondered for the first time what could be taking Alice so long:

"Why aren't you back yet?" Esme asked, worried. "It shouldn't have taken you all night."

Alice couldn't meet her eyes.

"Where are you?" Rosalie repeated, but her tone was angry.

"I don't know," Alice said bitterly.

"You left, didn't you?" Rosalie hissed.

"I don't know," Alice repeated.

Edward started reading then, needing to hear the truth.

Mentions my eyes had not moved from Edward's since Alice's departure, staring at each other all not, staring at what neither of us could go without losing:

At that, Alice's eyes flickered towards Jasper, but her thoughts echoed that it had to be much more than that.

Bella thinks would Alice have had time to see if they sent someone for her:

Yes, Alice thought, but didn't voice it.

Edward's scowl became more prominent as he continued to read.

Mentions Aro, who had seen into all the corners of Alice's mind, who knew everything she was capable of:

Alice shivered at that idea, but she was still confident that no one could surprise her … at least no vampire could.

Edward says I don't see how, but Aro knows her better than anyone else, better than I do:

"You're not even going to mention me?" Jasper asked, trying to loosen the animosity that was now building in the room.

"I know her mind better," Edward said curtly and then started to read again.

Edward says Sam, what is this:

"It seems like he is waiting for us," Emmett said. "Why else would he be there right now?"

"I don't know," Edward muttered, and the tension in the room was growing stronger.

Sam explains what happened ending with Alice told me to obey her as if all our lives depended on it:

Everyone was looking at Alice, who was looking thoughtful. She was trying to figure out what her book-self was doing, knowing that she was going to have to explain herself soon. Jasper too was uncomfortable. He didn't like the looks or feelings the rest of his family was projecting toward Alice at the moment.

Carlisle says Alice has decided to leave us:

Rosalie and Edward growled at that.

Esme whimpered and looked over at Alice miserably.

"I can't believe that you just left," Emmett said, but he was looking at Jasper. "Are you that afraid of the Volturi …?"

Jasper didn't know what to say to that, but he didn't want his family looking at Alice this way anymore. "I will …."

"Jasper, don't," Alice said, seeing what he was about to say and knowing it wasn't going to help. "This is my fault … let them be mad at me."

Jasper looked at her for a second before he gave in to her wish.

Edward started reading again, the anger clear in his voice.

Carlisle reads Alice's note ending with it's the only way for us, we love you:

"Only way for you?" Rosalie hissed, narrowing her eyes.

"Warning us to get others when you won't even stand by us?" Edward questioned. "Risking their lives?"

"I must think it will help," Alice said thoughtfully. I don't understand … there is no way that I would leave like this … nor would I want to risk our friends' lives … there has to be more to this than that.

"Do you really believe that?" Edward questioned.

Alice looked at him, and her eyes were filled with pain, concern, shock, doubt, and a multitude of other emotions, over what her book-self was doing and not of what she, herself, was thinking.

"Let's just hope you're right then," Edward said; for Alice's betrayal hurt more than if anyone else would have done this.

Edward says to Sam, you don't know her, and Sam says do you:

Edward narrowed his eyes and was suddenly very angry.

You do know me Edward, Alice thought. I wouldn't just leave.

Carlisle says Alice is free to do what she will, I wouldn't deny her that liberty:

Alice bowed her head; she could hear the disappointment and pain that must have been in Carlisle's voice when he said that.

Bella's thoughts on the Cullens and how Alice had adopted the Cullens ending with after she'd seen that life with the Cullens was over:

Alice was a little mad at this. Does she really think that I love the others any less because I was adopted? she thought to herself using Bella's words. They're my family … I would never just leave them … I would never just move on if something were to happen to them … Never!

Bella thinks we would fight, and we all would die:

"That's no way to think," Emmett frowned.

"It's the way she's been thinking throughout these books," Edward pointed out, picking the thought out of Jasper's head, who didn't feel comfortable enough at the moment to speak for himself.

"And she's always been wrong," Emmett said firmly. "And she is this time, too."

Carlisle couldn't help but smile at his son's logic.

Mentions Alice being able to write the note on anything, so why Bella's book, when did she get it:

"Yeah, why ruin her beautiful book?" Emmett chuckled.

"I must have a good reason for doing that," Alice said, convincingly this time.

Mentions that there was a message in Alice's actions and since it was her book, the message was for her, if the message was for Edward, it would have been from one of his books:

"She's right," Edward agreed, looking relieved about that.

Mentions below that was a name and address in Seattle:

"Okay, does anyone know what that means?" Emmett asked, but judging by the fact that he was looking at Alice when he said anyone, he was really talking about her.

"Not yet, but I obviously have something for her to do," Alice said.

Mentions the one person whose mind Edward could not read:

Edward raised an eyebrow at that. "Now you want her to keep secrets from me?"

The almost teasing nature of his voice caught her by surprise, but she could see now that Edward truly believed that she was planning something. "Yours is not the only mind that this would be a secret from."

Everyone gasped at that.

"You mean Aro's," Edward said. "You're trying to keep this from him?"

"It's just a thought," Alice shrugged.

Bella says Alice knew that if Jasper faced the Volturi, he would die, she was willing to die, for me to die, for you:

Alice bowed her head as Edward and Jasper looked at her.

"Is that possible?" Edward asked.

"I feel that it's more than that," Alice said. "I'm thinking of something else too."

"I wouldn't leave if it was that," Jasper said.

"Yes, you would, Jasper," Alice said, "if I made you," she added, looking into his eyes and hoping he would see that she knew what he was feeling about her – that she would do anything to keep him safe. Even with that thought, she still couldn't see leaving like this. "I couldn't have seen the battle yet …."

"No, there are too many decisions left to be made," Edward agreed, his voice cold again.

"I have no idea what I would do if I actually saw anything happening to Jasper," Alice said, and the pain of just saying that hurt so much that it took her a few seconds to continue. "But I know I wouldn't leave for a possibility, not if I could stop any or all of you from getting hurt."

"So, what the hell are you doing?" Rosalie hissed.

"Something," Alice said. "I just don't know."

Edward says she could have told us, sent him away:

Jasper growled at that; there was no way that he would leave Alice in danger like that. Then his face fell, feeling that there was no way that he could leave any of his family like this either. Alice was right - there had to be more to this because he knew as much as he loved everyone here, she loved them the same, maybe even more. He would follow her wherever she went, that was true, but there was no way that he would do something that would leave her as unhappy as this would. She would never be able to live with herself if this was true.

Edward glanced at Jasper at that point and his worries seemed to be put to rest with this thought.

Bella thinks I had to figure out who this J. Jenks person was:

"Jay Jenks?" Jasper repeated. "You mean the guy that I get our paperwork from?"

"I think so," Edward said. "Why would she need to go see him?"

"Yeah, it's not like Bella is going to need any traveling papers or anything like that," Emmett said.

"Traveling …." Rosalie eyes widened. "That's it!"

"What?" Everyone looked at her confused.

"You think?" Edward asked, almost smiling, his eyes looking a little relieved.

"It makes sense. Alice would know that was something that we would all want," Rosalie said, the anger at her sister waning greatly, though not fully.

"Can you tell me what you're talking about?" Emmett asked impatiently and everyone, but Edward seemed to want to know that answer to that too.

"It might be so Renesmee could have some traveling papers …." Edward explained.

"That she could have some kind of escape from … this," Rosalie said, unable to discuss her family's fate in more words than that.

"Cool!" Emmett shouted, and everyone gave a shaky laugh, a little high with the momentary relief they were feeling.

"This would mean that you would have to take care of Demetri though," Jasper pointed out.

"Cool!" Emmett repeated, this time smiling smugly.

Mentions Renesmee already understood only too clearly what was going on:

Edward looked conflicted about that.

"I think it's better that she knows," Carlisle said. "She would sense that something is wrong."

Mentions suddenly I knew this was all I wanted, but not Renesmee's life being forfeited, not that:

"Agreed," Edward said, and most everyone nodded their heads. The thought of losing the innocent little girl who had barely had a chance to live was unbearable.

Mentions of Renesmee settled on Alice's face, longing and confused, where was Alice:

Alice bit her lip and felt worse now than before.

Mentions of Renesmee stroked Bella's face, showing her nothing, just trying to soothe her:

Edward's voice was tight as he read this part. In some ways this was more difficult for him to read than anything else had been.

O

"Irresistible," Emmett read. "I have a feeling that Renesmee might be good at convincing people to believe in her."

"Of course, she is," Rosalie smiled. "She's precious."

Bella thinks I don't even know how to fight, how was I going to learn in a month:

Edward hissed at that. He didn't want her to have to learn how to fight at all.

"It's best if she learns as much as she can," Jasper said solemnly.

"I know," Edward admitted, but he didn't feel any better about this.

Edward says I wish we can get the information for Eleazar before we show Nessie, just in case:

"But we have no idea what the information pertains to," Carlisle frowned.

Alice, on the other hand, was frowning at the fact that Bella didn't want to be reminded of her, though she didn't really blame her. She was still convinced that she wouldn't have just left her family.

Bella asks, Edward, will you teach me to fight:

Edward shuddered at the idea.

"It's …." Jasper started.

"For her own good if she learned to fight," Edward finished his sentence for him. "But I don't think I can look at her that way …."

"I understand," Jasper said, looking at Alice sadly.

Edward says if Alec uses his gift against us, we will be blind and deaf until they kill us:

"All except her, of course," Emmett said.

Edward looked at his brother and his eyes were panicked.

"Maybe she could …." Emmett started.

"She wouldn't stand a chance … she would be all alone," Edward swallowed hard.

"But if she could take down Alec, then we would have a chance," Emmett stated bluntly, refusing to be sidetracked by his brother's worries.

"I doubt the other Volturi would allow her to get anywhere near him," Jasper stated grimly.

Bella asks do you think Alec is a very good fighter:

"See, she's thinking along my lines," Emmett said.

And Edward panicked, his pained look intensifying.

Bella says maybe if he's never really had to defend himself and I learned a few tricks:

"She has a point there. I bet he hasn't worked on his combat skills as much as he could," Emmett said.

"Like I said, that wouldn't really matter," Jasper frowned. "She would be all alone with the entire Volturi army …."

"We get it!" Edward hissed. He couldn't take that image in his head.

Bella thinks why would either Jane or Alec ever have needed to learn battle skills:

"I like her thinking," Emmett smiled.

"Em …." Edward growled a warning.

"Relax, bro, I get it," Emmett rolled his eyes. "For a mind reader, you're not really doing your job correctly right now."

Edward rolled his eyes as Emmett's thoughts about liking how he and Bella were thinking alike overcame him.

Bella thinks I couldn't imagine Jane surrendering her advantage, even to learn:

"She probably has a point there," Jasper said. "It is more likely that Jane wouldn't have learned as much as she could, though Alec might be a different case."

Edward grimaced as his brother was thinking longingly of somehow being able to use Bella's advantage against their opponents. It would really catch the Volturi off-guard if that was possible.

Mentions Bella kept her face smooth as she considered Demetri:

"No way," Edward hissed.

"But Demetri is someone who needs to be dealt with," Jasper frowned. "He's actually the biggest threat to us right now … considering that he's the one who will track us down …."

Edward nodded his head in agreement. "I'm going to deal with Demetri."

Jasper looked over Edward carefully. "That probably would be best."

Edward says for Alice, it's the only thanks I can give her now for the last fifty years:

Thanks, Alice thought, and Edward grimaced.

Mentions the pictures in my head were jarring, a compassionate Volturi soldier:

Emmett snorted at that. "That's a good one, Bella."

Edward rolled his eyes, though he agreed that the image didn't really match up with him either; not after reading these books.

Edward explains about Eleazar's gift ending with Aro was sorry to see him go:

"Yeah, I bet he was," Emmett said. "It must have made it harder for him to find new toys for him to play with."

"That's an interesting theory," Edward said, looking at Emmett thoughtfully.

Edward says the Volturi aren't supposed to be the villains and more:

"It's weird how much these books have changed my mind about the Volturi," Edward said.

Edward says we need to be ready, and then they arranged and rearranged:

"Who thought it would be a good idea to leave the two people who's the most likely to worry here to greet the incoming vampires?" Emmett questioned with a chuckle.

"Edward's ability would be the most useful here," Carlisle said.

"Besides, they're Renesmee's parents. They need to be close to her," Esme added.

Bella remembers meeting the Denalis ending with I couldn't remember if there was kindness in their eyes:

"Don't worry, they're all nice," Esme said, though it seemed like she was trying to reassure herself at that same time that nothing bad was going to happen.

Renesmee asks what if they don't like me:

"Don't worry, she's irresistible, remember?" Emmett said, reminding them of the chapter title, and Esme and Rosalie's (and Edward's too) expression lightened a little.

Renesmee shows vampire, human, werewolf, she fit nowhere:

Everyone frowned at that; feeling sad for the little girl who already understood she was different.

Renesmee says this is my fault:

Emmett pushed his lips together and tried not to laugh.

"That's not funny," Rosalie growled at him. "And it's most definitely not true."

"That's not it, I was just thinking that she really is her parents' daughter," Emmett said, laughing loudly this time.

"Oh," Rosalie said and had to smile at that. "You have a point there."

Edward says I mean my entire family is in very grave danger, but promise you will listen to everything I have to say before you react:

"See what I mean. Eddy's just making them all more nervous about this than they have to be," Emmett chuckled. "Making it seem like it's the end of the world and all."

"Well, it is in a way, isn't it?" Edward grumbled. He thought he was handling this just fine.

Edward says I'd like to witness yourselves first, listen in the other room, what do you hear:

"Hm … interesting way of going about it," Carlisle said. "Showing how Nessie couldn't possibly be an immortal child before you reveal her … giving them something to think about when they do actually meet her."

"I hope it works," Edward said.

"I bet they overreact at first," Emmett chuckled. "This should be amusing."

"Amusing?" Edward said in disgust, but Emmett ignored him and started to read again.

Kate says what is that thrumming, is that some kind of a bird:

"Well, if she was English … then yes," Emmett said chuckling.

"Idiot," Rosalie and Edward said together this time.

"What? I thought it was funny," Emmett shrugged, still chuckling.

Tanya says it's not human, but closer to human than the rest of the scents, I never smelled that fragrance before:

"You most definitely haven't," Carlisle said. He was now smiling at Edward, thinking that this was an excellent way to make them realize the truth.

The Denali's reaction to Renesmee ending with Eleazar threw himself in front of Carmen in a protective crouch:

Emmett couldn't stop himself from laughing. The image of his friends toppling over themselves to cower in front of the little girl was just too amusing not to.

Everyone was shocked though when Edward chuckled slightly too.

"Edward, this isn't funny," Rosalie snapped at him.

"Sorry," Edward said, looking more serious again. "It's just that Emmett has a good imagination."

"I know, don't I?" Emmett laughed. "That would have been freakin' hilarious to see."

Carmen says her heartbeat:

"Yes, it would be her who would see reason first," Carlisle said. "She is not bound by her fear like the sisters are, nor does she know how ruthlessly the Volturi uphold their laws, like Eleazar does."

Edward says, Bella is a biological mother, it nearly killed her, I was hard pressed to get enough venom into her:

Edward shivered at that; another fear, more powerful than the one that they were dealing with in the book, hit him. What if he wasn't able to save her in this reality?

"Don't worry, Edward," Jasper said softly, feeling the change in his mood and knowing what caused it. "We will be more prepared for this."

Edward nodded his head and Emmett started reading again.

Renesmee imagined touching Carmen's face and wondered if that was okay:

"Hm … this should be interesting," Carlisle smiled, looking forward to their reaction to Renesmee's gift.

"How come he doesn't get yelled at for saying something like that?" Emmett pouted. "But anytime I say it …."

"He's Carlisle," Edward shrugged, knowing that would annoy Emmett the most.

Eleazar says ay caray when Renesmee starts using her gift:

"Oh, come on. It's not that scary, is it?" Emmett asked.

"It would be kind of a shock, I'm sure," Carlisle said. "I wish we could have seen how we reacted to this."

Renesmee frowns impatiently and commands watch, please:

Everyone laughed at this.

"She's got your attitude, Eddy," Emmett laughed.

Tanya says not directly from the child, but from the Volturi, how did they find out, when are they coming:

Esme shuddered at this. Her relief at them accepting Renesmee vanished as she thought of how hard this was going to be on them to hear that it was their own sister who brought this trouble on them. Even though she hated that this had happened, she knew it would be harder on the sisters in particular, to hear that.

Tanya says no matter how many friends you gather, we can't help you win, we can only die with you:

"Oh, please," Emmett rolled his eyes. "The Volturi aren't that unstoppable … I'm sure if we get …."

"We are not gathering our friends to fight, Emmett," Carlisle said stiffly, cutting off his son's comment.

Because Carlisle did not usually behave this way, and he could see the sadness in his father's eyes, Emmett decided to keep reading rather than making further comments about this.

Renesmee says I never hurt Grandpa or Sue or Billy, I love humans, and wolf people like my Jacob:

Edward shivered and Rosalie growled at Renesmee calling him, my Jacob.

"That's worse than when Bella said that," Edward grumbled, glaring at the book.

O

Talented

Tanya says she is special, the little one, hard to resist:

"I hope she's impossible to resist," Esme muttered, thinking about the Volturi being unable to resist her charm too and leaving them in peace.

"I'm not sure that's what Eddy's hoping," Emmett chuckled. "Think of all the guys she'll have …."

"Stop," Edward growled. "Is it not enough for you that I have to put up with the mutt?"

"Hmm … no, it's not enough," Emmett laughed.

Eleazar says a mind reader for a father, a shield for a mother:

"Shield?" Carlisle asked, he looked thoughtful. "That is a good way to describe her."

"Yeah, she definitely blocks things out," Jasper agreed. Both of them were looking even more excited about what was going to be said next.

Edward's expression, however, was even more exciting; he was about to learn more about one of the mysteries of his Bella.

Eleazar looked at Edward curiously, his manic pacing forgotten for the moment:

"Interesting," Carlisle smiled. "It seems that Eleazar's gift is blocked just like the rest of you, but because of the nature of his gift, being blocked almost allows him to see the gift as he normally would have."

Eleazar says Aro sent me all over the world searching for such anomalies, and you stumble across it by accident and don't even realize what you have:

"I believe I do realize how extraordinary she is, thank you very much," Edward said, a little annoyed. "And that has little to do with her ability."

Bella thinks all I could picture was a ridiculous medieval suit of armor:

Emmett laughed at that, picturing himself holding up Bella like he was using her as a shield.

Edward hissed at him, though he was slightly amused at the same time. He didn't what to think of Bella being between Emmett and whatever it was that he would face.

Bella says it only works with certain things, but it doesn't stop Jasper from messing with my mood or Alice seeing my future:

"Messing with her mood," Jasper repeated, slightly offended at her description.

"That's a lovely way of putting it," Emmett laughed loudly.

Eleazar's eyes widened when Edward says Aro couldn't hear her, and she was human when they met:

"That impressed him," Edward said smugly.

"That would impress anyone," Carlisle smiled.

Bella says Jane tried but she couldn't hurt me, and Edward thinks Demetri can't find me, and Alec can't bother me, is that good:

"Is that good?" Edward repeated in disbelief, and everyone chuckled. "Tell me she knew that was very good before this."

"I'm sure she did," Carlisle chuckled.

Eleazar describes Renata power as a shield ending with, you find yourself going a different direction than you planned and why you wanted to go that way:

"Aw … I want to test that out," Emmett said. "If you're running at her as fast as you can, would it really work?"

"I'm sure it would, Em," Jasper said. "She wouldn't be his shield if she didn't stop people from attacking like that."

Eleazar mused if Renata tried to keep Bella back, I wonder who would win:

"Bella, of course," Edward said proudly.

Bella thinks that vampires only had one extra ability at most, right:

"Yeah, but your super-self-control wasn't an ability, but an extra perk," Emmett chuckled.

Kate asks can you project:

"Project!" Edward and Carlisle said in identical tones of excitement.

"That's a very interesting idea," Carlisle said. "If she could project this ability onto someone else … do you know what this means?"

"Yes," Emmett said excitedly, though his thoughts weren't exactly where his fathers were. "That means she could make it so Eddy can't cheat anymore," his mind now going over what it would be like to have a wrestling match with Edward without having to guard his thoughts.

Edward chuckled at that. "That's not exactly what Carlisle was thinking of, but it's along those lines."

"She would be able to stop other people from using mind tricks on someone she's shielding," Jasper said. "That would be incredible … definitely something to look into."

Eleazar says if I'm right it would change everything about the world we've created, change the meaning of my life, what I have been a part of:

"It seems you're disillusioning his idea of the Volturi," Jasper said. "They are not what we have always believed them to be."

Mentions A pattern that only repeated every other century or so:

Carlisle narrowed his eyes, having a feeling where this was going, and not liking it one bit.

Jasper and Edward looked similar, but they didn't look shocked, merely disgusted.

Edward explains more that when Aro attends a punishing expedition ending with the gifted vampire was spared and then offered a place and they would accept:

Carlisle was shaking his head.

"I wonder if they even committed the crimes or if they were just framed," Edward hissed.

"If this is true, they're not going to stop," Jasper frowned.

"No, it just means that we're going to have to get more vampires on our side…" Emmett said. "…really make them worry."

Jasper frowned but didn't argue with his brother.

Eleazar explains about Chelsea's gift ending with I doubt she could turn our allegiance, Tanya:

"But she might be able to strain it," Edward muttered. "And even if not, it would make any of the people that we have witness for us, not as willing to help us."

"True. This Chelsea is dangerous," Jasper muttered.

Eleazar says Aro must want the gifts very badly:

"So, all of this is because he wants to get Shortie, and maybe Eddy too, to join his ranks," Emmett said.

"It seems so," Edward frowned.

"He might want Bella too," Carlisle said thoughtfully. "Her gift must be really appealing to him too. And I wouldn't put it past him to be interested in Renesmee …."

Edward growled then and he wasn't the only one.

"I know," Carlisle said, bowing his head. "I don't like that idea either."

Mentions of had Alice seen Chelsea trying to strip away her love for us, to bind her to Aro, Caius and Marcus:

"Ew," Alice cringed, "as if I would let that happen." She then realized how that sounded and quickly added, "Though I won't need to leave to stop that."

Edward says Alice sent Peter and Charlotte, after all, time to get ready for the next round:

"That's it," Esme said, handing the book to Jasper, who was frowning.

"Alice is definitely up to something," Jasper voiced. "She would not ask me to risk Peter in a fight she thought was pointless … nor would I allow him to be sent if I didn't know that I was doing something that would help in the end." With that, he took the book and started to read.

O

Company

Mentions that the vampires gave Forks and La Push a wide berth, hunting out of state:

"I wonder how the wolves handled that," Carlisle frowned.

"They probably hate it," Edward said, "but it appears that Nessie is more important to them than their instincts to kill vampires."

Mentions that Edward lending out his cars as needed without so much as a wince:

Rosalie, however, narrowed her eyes at the thought of someone else driving her M3, but then she thought of them being there to protect Renesmee and her expression softened; she was now merely annoyed instead of infuriated.

Mentions the vampires treated Jacob the way people who aren't animal-lovers treat the pets of their friends:

Emmett was laughing at this, and so was Rosalie, though she was a little irritated about having such an annoying pet.

Mentions that Peter and Charlotte allowed Renesmee's 'explanation' and now they were committed to witnessing as Tanya's family:

"Do you think Renesmee's 'explanation' helps convince people more?" Emmett asked.

"Well, it seems that it's easier to see the truth, judging by the reaction all the Denali's had to her," Carlisle said with a nod. "So yes, I do think it helps a lot."

Bella sees Eleazar staring at the boy with wide eye and assumed Benjamin had a talent that drew the others to him:

"She's not mistaken with that," Carlisle chuckled.

"What can he do?" Emmett asked.

"I'm sure you will see soon enough," Carlisle said.

"Wow, that's impressive," Edward said, responding to Carlisle's thoughts - mostly to annoy Emmett, but he really was impressed by the 'young' vampire.

Mentions that Amun has been keeping Benjamin from Aro's attention:

Carlisle was frowning again, starting to feel really sorry that he had involved his friend in this. There is no way that Benjamin would escape their attention now.

Mentions he can actually influence the elements – earth, wind, water, and fire:

"Wow," Emmett and Jasper said at that same time.

"That's amazing!" Emmett grinned.

"I'm glad he's on our side," Jasper agreed.

Mentions Garrett came first:

"Cool, Garrett's there," Emmett cheered. He was always up to any challenge that Emmett came up with.

Mentions that Garrett fell in with the Denali sisters and Bella wonders if vegetarianism was another challenge he would try:

"He didn't seem that interested in that when he was talking to us," Emmett said. "I guess it takes beautiful … single women to talk him into it."

Mentions that Carlisle brought one more friend with him, though friend might be the wrong term, Alistair:

"Ah, Alistair," Carlisle smiled. "He most certainly is a friend, even if he is a bit different."

"What do you mean?" Emmett questioned.

"You'll see," Carlisle said and then mumbled. "Though I find it shocking that he would come with me at all …."

Mentions the unexpected arrival of the Amazons, the taller of the two women:

"Two?" Carlisle questioned.

Jasper decided that reading would be the best way to answer that question.

Mentions but Alice had sent them:

"You sent them," Esme said, smiling. It was becoming a lot easier to believe that Alice didn't abandon them after all. She never wanted to believe that there was something that would cause her daughter, or son for that matter, to leave them like this.

Zafrina says Alice told us we needed to separate ending with that's all she would tell us:

"What are you up to?" Edward questioned.

"Don't know, but it must be important," Alice shrugged.

Jasper smiled slightly as he felt a lot of the tension in the room leave with that. That's not to say that there wasn't still a lot of tension – everyone was worried about the outcome of this situation, but it was slightly better now.

Edward says it's a very straightforward illusion:

"An illusion?" Emmett questioned. "Is that all?"

"Yes," Carlisle smiled. "But it's more impressive than Edward made it sound. She must not be trying very hard."

"What do you mean by that?" Emmett asked.

"Well, she can make you see whatever she wants," Carlisle smiled. "And she's not limited to only using her gift on one person at a time. I remember when I first visited her, she showed me all the temples that they had passed in their travels throughout South America. It was so fascinating seeing the difference it …."

"Er … Carlisle," Emmett said a little impatiently.

"Sorry," Carlisle smiled sheepishly.

"Well, she certainly does seem like an excellent addition to our group," Jasper smiled.

Mentions Zafrina showing Renesmee and with a dazzling smile she says more:

"I'm pretty sure that Nessie is going to like Zafrina," Carlisle chuckled.

Explains Edward's reactions to Bella's first attempt at learning to fight ending with staring across the meadow we were practicing in:

Edward was frowning the whole time this was described, knowing that he would never want to do this.

"It's always hard to face your mate like that," Jasper said, "but I would imagine it would be even more difficult for you."

"Why?" Edward asked, though he was in total agreement with his brother.

"Because you have spent the last two years training your body to protect her," Jasper explained.

Mentions that only Edward was willing to be our guinea pig, to receive shock after shock Kate:

Edward grimaced at the idea of allowing himself to get shocked like that, but he would endure any pain to keep Bella, Renesmee, and the rest of his family safe.

Bella thinks I hated this practice, and I wished that Zafrina would help instead of Kate:

"Well, that would be nicer, but I'm not sure it would be more effective," Jasper muttered. "I have a feeling that trying to protect Edward is one of the most compelling means for you to accomplish your task."

Mentions Kate darted to where Zafrina, Senna, and Renesmee were walking, and Jacob shadowed them from a few feet behind:

"Why am I picturing the pup wearing a suit and earpiece right about now?" Emmett chuckled.

"Because you're an idiot," Alice answered, but she was laughing at what he just said.

"Who cares about that?" Rosalie said sharply. "Kate is going to go after Renesmee!"

"I'm sure it's not as bad as it appears," Edward said, though his eyes were narrowed, and he was looking tense too.

Renesmee says but momma, I want to help:

Edward's lips thinned. Only Jasper knew that Edward was amused by this image more than he was angry about it.

"What are you thinking?" Jasper asked because he was confused by Edward's emotions - for what felt like the millionth time while they read these books.

"Renesmee is really a lot like her mother," Edward said, and now everyone could see his amusement. "She wants to be useful, just like Bella always had been in the past."

"I would think you wouldn't like that idea at all," Jasper said, "of Nessie being in danger like that."

"Of course, I don't like it," Edward rolled his eyes, "but I do like the comparison."

Kate asks Edward, can you hear anything from Nessie:

"Hm … so this is a test," Jasper said, as if the theory he had being thinking of was just confirmed. "And it seems as though Kate's plan has worked."

Rosalie hissed at that.

"I know you don't like this, but in the end, this will prove to be very important," Jasper said. "It will help Bella develop her shield more efficiently."

Zafrina says no one panic, I want to see how far she can extend, and then there was shocked gasp from everyone:

"What did she do?" Emmett asked and before anyone could say anything he added, "That really wasn't much of a warning."

Carlisle shrugged in answer to both the question and the statement and Jasper started reading again.

Edward explains what it's like being under Bella's powers ending with I still can't hear you … hmm:

"Damn," Edward cursed. He was getting increasingly excited that he might actually get an opportunity to hear Bella's thoughts, but it looked like she was going to remain silent to him.

Mentions of Garrett stared up at the smirking Kate, and a wondering smile lit his face:

"If you ask me, I think he might have felt some unintended sparks there," Emmett said, wiggling his eyebrows again.

"That would be lovely," Esme smiled.

Someone says no one sent us, and mentions Bella was reminded of the ancient voice of Aro and Caius:

"Oh, I get it," Carlisle said, his eyes going slightly wide in his surprise.

"Really?" Edward said. "Why would they come here?"

After a moment, in which Edward nodded his head in understanding, Carlisle said, "Read Jasper."

Edward says maybe we should test our Romanian visitors' claims:

"Oh," everyone but Carlisle and Edward said.

"I suppose in a disturbing way, this is a good thing," Jasper said. "It might mean we have a chance."

The dark one says well, well, Carlisle, you have been naughty haven't you:

Emmett chuckled at that. "They don't seem that bad."

"They're not," Carlisle admitted, "but everything is a bit more tense when they are around."

O

Forgery

Charlie say Sue's bringing me lunch, she's just as horrified by my cooking as you were when you first showed up:

"You know, Sue seems to be hanging around Charlie a lot," Emmett said, waggling his eyebrows. "I think something's going on there."

"She certainly seems to be helping him get through this," Esme said.

"Hm … then Charlie might not have this much help in our reality if we ever tell him … er … at least as much as he does now," Carlisle said, wondering if that would make much of a difference in how Charlie would react.

"Why … oh, you mean because of Harry, right?" Emmett started to ask. "That's true, you're hoping that you could save him."

"I'm sure Charlie would be okay," Esme said. "And I'm sure that Sue will help him out even if Harry's around … just maybe not as much."

"So, I guess we're all thinking that something is going on there," Emmett chuckled.

Bella thinks that there was a strange reluctance in his voice when he spoke of Billy, but not enough to worry what that was about:

"Oh, come on, Bella – I want to know their problems," Emmett whined.

"I don't," his siblings chorused.

"But … I'm sure it's interesting," Emmett pouted. "I bet they're fighting over a girl …." he added with a smirk.

"And that would be interesting because…?" Edward asked.

Emmett started pouting again and Carlisle decided to read.

Mentions no human being should get near the vampire, it's what Bella told Edward, and it was a good reason for leaving the house, but not her real reason:

"Looks like she's trying to sneak off without you, Eddy, and in the first few months of your marriage, too," Emmett said, shaking his head sadly, but grinning. "Poor, poor, Eddy."

"Shut up," Edward hissed.

Jacob says why can't we take your Ferrari:

"You got her a Ferrari!" Rosalie exclaimed. "Nice! I wonder what model it is."

"Well, seeing as this is Bella, I don't think you're going to find out," Emmett chuckled.

"She's a vampire. She can remember a car name," Rosalie said.

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean she'll mention it," Emmett shrugged.

Mentions Bella didn't show the appropriate enthusiasm, sure, it was pretty and fast, but I liked to run:

Rosalie shook her head, frowning.

Edward's reaction was the same, but he was smiling. Annoyed and amused all at once by how Bella reacted to that; besides, he liked running, too.

Jacob says say what you want, I think Dracula One and Dracula two are creep-tacular:

Emmett snorted loudly at that.

"They are rather unusual," Carlisle smiled.

"Well, at least the pup is getting tortured by having to stay close to all of us 'bloodsuckers', eh babe," Emmett chuckled.

Rosalie smiled slightly but didn't say anything because Esme was glaring at the both of them.

Mentions that Renesmee found the Romanians strangely fascinating:

"I think she's inherited part of your character then," Esme said, smiling at Carlisle.

"Yeah, you think everything's fascinating," Emmett added.

"Children are naturally curious and no matter how developed Renesmee seems to be, she is still a child," Carlisle said, but he still had to smile at Esme's comment.

Mentions Renesmee asked the Romanians about their unusual skin, and though Bella was afraid it would offend them, Bella was glad, she was curious too:

"And she might have gotten more than a bit of her curiosity from her mother," Carlisle added.

"And the nerve to ask impolite questions from her father," Alice added, smirking at Edward.

Vladimir explains why his skin is that way ending with I imagine that will give us an advantage when we gouge their eyes from their sockets:

"Oh, dear!" Esme exclaimed. "I really didn't need to hear that and poor Renesmee … what must she be thinking?"

Of course, as she said this, Emmett was laughing.

Mentions I tried to keep Renesmee away from them after that:

"Good," Esme nodded in approval.

Bella explains about her eyes change in color ending with I hoped the change wouldn't upset Charlie too much:

"He's probably already noticed that your eyes are different," Carlisle pointed out.

"Why would you think that?" Emmett asked.

"Well, Renesmee's eyes were the reason that Charlie realized that she was actually Bella's daughter," Carlisle said. "And Alice said that her eye color wasn't as nice with the contacts on … I assume that he would notice the difference."

Mentions that Jacob had no idea what I was up to:

"But I'm definitely going to know that you're up to something," Edward frowned.

"You probably already knew she was up to something, Bella's not the best at being covert," Emmett chuckled.

"And it's just going to be more annoying knowing that the pup knows something," Edward grumbled.

"You have to trust that it's a good thing that you don't know what's going on," Alice said.

"Sure, whatever," Edward said. "That's not going to make it any less annoying though."

Mentions Learning to protect some, learning to kill others:

"I think you should stick with the protecting," Edward said.

"Agreed," Jasper nodded. "That's definitely where she'd be most useful."

Edward grimaced at the way Jasper said it, and the strategic battle plans going through his head, but at least Jasper was agreeing with him.

Mentions it wasn't a nice neighborhood would be an understatement, the most nondescript car was outrageous on this street:

"Seriously, Edward, she's a vampire! Nothing is going to happen to her," Jasper said.

"Er … right, sorry," Edward smiled at him sheepishly. "I'm just used to worrying about her."

Maybe you shouldn't park there, lady, it might not be there when you get back:

"Take it seriously, Bella," Edward said, not wanting his car to be stolen.

"Edward, that's hardly what's important right now," Emmett said in tone similar to Esme's when she was reprimanding them.

Edward made a face at him, and Emmett laughed.

Bella says this was the address I was given, by a dependable source:

"A dependable source that - as of right now- you think has skipped town on you," Emmett chuckled.

"Emmett, please don't say that," Esme said, in a hurt voice as Alice glared at him.

"Sorry," Emmett sighed.

Bella wonders would my description mean something to J. Jenks, that was a troubling thought:

"Hm … I would assume he knows more than most, but not everything," Jasper said. "He kind of takes the Charlie point of view, about the amount information he needs to know."

Bella thinks she was kind of irritated with Alice, did she have to be this blind, she could have given me one or two more words:

Emmett chuckled. "See, told you. You should have said more."

"I guess you have a point," Alice chuckled. "But as long as she gets what she needs."

Edward growled at the both of them.

J on the phone asks is there an emergency and Max says well, not exactly:

"Actually, I have a feeling that J would think that it is quite the emergency," Jasper grinned.

"And what does that mean?" Emmett asked, looking amused.

"You'll see, I'm sure," Jasper chuckled.

Mentions there was beat of dead silence, then the voice was screaming, using a lot of words you didn't often hear outside of truck stops:

"Wow!" Emmett exclaimed. "What have you done to this guy, Jazz?"

"I haven't done anything to him," Jasper said innocently and then both he and Emmett laughed.

Mention it was entertaining to watch him flounder, I was pleased at how easy it was not to kill him:

Emmett chuckled at that.

"I can't believe that she's so young," Jasper frowned. "She already has more control than I'll ever have."

"I think it's funny that she's relating with humans better now that she's a vampire," Alice said. She had taken Jasper's hand at his last comment and knew that he wouldn't really want anyone commenting on what he had said. "I think this is just further proof that Bella was made to be a vampire."

Bella, trying to make it sound like she knew what she was talking about, says papers:

"Ah … that's why. You needed Maxie to tell her about him dealing with forged documents," Emmett said. "Still, I don't see why you couldn't have simply put the word paper next to J. Jenks and be done with it."

"Because, Em, it's more fun this way," Alice giggled.

Mentions that the only reason Renesmee would need a forger was if she was running, and she would only need to run if we had lost:

"Oh, great, now Bella is going to be more depressed than before," Emmett grumbled. "We're not going to lose; Shorty is just making sure the little nudger is safe."

Mentions so that left one person, there really had never been anyone else:

Edward frowned at that, having a good idea what she was thinking of. It was an uncomfortable idea, but he would definitely do whatever it took to keep Renesmee safe.

J says I'll need picture if you prefer finished documents, Jasper usually liked to finish them himself:

Jasper smirked at the image of Bella trying to do it herself … and how she would go about figuring out how to do it in the first place. "I think finished documents would be better for her."

Mentions this was luck I had several family picture and the perfect one, Alice had given it to me just a few days before … oh:

"I do work in mysterious ways," Alice smiled.

"But this was before you left … before your vision," Emmett said, a little confused.

"Like I said, I work in mysterious ways … sometimes even mysterious to myself," Alice shrugged.

Mentions that Bella had more money than she needed with her, and unclasped her bag again and counted out the right amount:

"She so trusting," Jasper said, shaking his head. "What if he was trying to cheat her?"

"After the way he reacted after just hearing her name," Emmett pointed out with a chuckle, "I wouldn't worry about that either."
