Chapter 5

A sailor swabbed the deck coming upon Elizabeth's discarded wedding dress. He picked it up in concern.

Not too much later the Captain pushed through the groups of shouting sailors. He sees the quartermaster and bursar in a tug of war with the dress. "If both of you fancy the dress, you'll just have to share, and wear it one after the other."

"It's not like that, sir. The ship is haunted!" The bursar said in worry.

"Is it now?" The Captain questioned crossing his arms.

"Aye, there's a female presence here with us, sir. Everyone feels it." The Quartermaster said hoping the captain would believe them.

"Ghost of a lady widowed before her marriage, I figure it, searching for her husband lost at sea." The sailor said.

"A virgin too, likely as not, and that bodes ill by all accounts." The cook said, shaking his head.

The bursar pulled on the dress. "We need to throw it overboard, and hope the spirit will follow, or this ship will taste the icy waters in a fortnight, mark my words."

The quartermaster pulled on the dress again.

Not too far away were two sailors painting shellac onto a rail.

"Heave it overboard and anger the spirit? No!"

"Enough!" The captain said as he took the dress. "Men, this appears to me nothing more as we have a stowaway on board. A woman, young woman by the looks of it." He stroked the dress. "To your duties, then, and if there is a stowaway, and 'tis a woman, I don't see as a naked one's likely to escape notice, aye? Shake a leg."

The sailors that were painting were none other than Elizabeth and Rose. The two of them dropped their brushes and pretended to join the hunt for the supposed woman that was aboard the ship.

Rose took a breath as she looked at her younger sister. "This is probably the craziest plan that we've had in quite a long time."

Elizabeth smiled a small smile. "Reminds me of when we were younger before our mother's death."

Rose nodded her head sadly. She remembered how much trouble that the two of them had gotten into when they were younger before their mother had passed away. It was one of the things that neither woman spoke about until today. "Mother would have a heart attack seeing us do this." She mused softly, shaking her head lightly. "But then again mother would say to follow our dreams. Follow our loved ones…"

"We're both just a bit late , aren't we?" Elizabeth asked softly.

"One of us is later than the other. At least Will won't be hopefully not too far ahead." She admitted softly. "I should've left a long time ago to look for James."

"I'm sure that he'll be happy to know that you've thought of him this entire time."

"Perhaps. I just hope that he is still very much alive."

"I know…"

PIRATES

Elizabeth climbed up a ratline slowly listening near the door. She waved her hand to her sister.

Rose nodded her head and moved towards the captain's door finishing up what she was supposed to do to help with the plan that they had come up with.

"It's an outrage! Port tariffs and Berthing fees and cargo unloading fees per cargo tonnage and wharf handling and heaving help me, pilotage! Are we all to work for the East India Trading Company then?"

"The numbers don't lie sir…" Bursar said.

"Make them lie!"

"I'm afraid sir… Tortuga is the only free port left in these waters." The quartermaster said.

"A pirate port is what you mean. Well I'm sorry but I am an honest sailor. I make my living square and sleep well each night, thank you."

Rose waved her hand to her sister alerting her that the plan was a go.

Elizabeth nodded her head and began to move something around by the captain's cabin.

Rose took a breath as she heard loud footsteps of the three men coming out of the cabin.

Elizabeth was controlling her wedding gown. She moved it past the capstan, making it dance close to the rail, then out over the black sea and then back.

"Tell me you do see that?" The cook questioned as the Captain came up near him and Rose.

"Aye, I do see that."

The dress suddenly stopped moving, one of the arms lifted up pointing directly at the captain.

"She wants you to do something." Bursar said softly.

"Jump overboard?" The quartermaster questioned.

The captain gave him a scowl. "She's trying to give a sign."

"Tor…tu…ga." A voice softly came across the wind.

"Did you hear that?" The cook questioned looking around.

"Bermuda?" Bursar questioned.

"Tobago?" The quartermaster guessed.

"Tortilla?" A sailor questioned only to get looks. "Sorry, I'm hungry."

The dress swooped down, knocking a burning lantern before racing towards the rail and dropping.

Rose quickly moved to help her sister as the men talked about what the signs could be. "You did a good job there."

Elizabeth smiled. "Now we just got to get them to see the sign."

Rose nodded her head. "Go on."

Elizabeth moved and grabbed the shoulder of Bursar and turned him around and pointed. "What's that over there?"

Everyone turned, seeing the deck burning with the word Tortuga.

"Is it telling us to go there?" The quartermaster asked, hoping that the question wouldn't send their captain over the edge.

"Men, what say ye to a course change? Prudence suggests we make our way for the island of Tortuga."

Elizabeth and Rose smiled. Finally they were going to a place that they wanted to go.

"Put that out while you're at it, there's a good lad."

Rose and Elizabeth let out a breath and decided to clean up the mess that they had made.

Rose looked over at her sister. "Well let's clean that up."

Elizabeth nodded her head in agreement.
