. . . . .
The members of the Uchiha Clan were born in the fiery passion of love. They died in the fiery passion of the heat of battle and war. They were phoenixes that existed and burned in a never ending cycle of love and hatred. So Obito was not surprised when in the darkness of the cave he was left in, past the numbed pain of his crushed legs, and his now missing left eye, he felt the heat of fire against his hands.
Something landed on his upper chest. Rin had given medication that would put him to sleep, yet he wasn't tired. It slowly faded. A glow filled his vision. Instinctively he reached a hand to his chest. In the darkness his fingers fumbled around an item.
'Baka…kashi?' He clenched the item. In his weariness, he opened his eyes. The sun floated above him. It looked back at him with large dark and curious eyes. A pillar of tiny flame wafted from the top of the sun, past the spikes of its rays. He heard crumbling and cracking. The cave shook, and the ground below him collapsed.
No strength to scream, or flail his arms, he focused on keeping a grip on the item in his hand. Kakashi's voice screamed in his mind. He focused on the last bits of chakra his body would let him muster. He looked at the barrier that surrounded him as he tumbled through the air. His own blood blinded his vision, but through the streaks he saw the swirling sparkles. Sparkles of glittering hope he desperately wished he wasn't losing.
He smacked into the ground below him on his side. He felt his arm snap on impact. The barrier remained. The sun floated above him, weaving through the rocks that fell around them. The large boulder that had crushed his legs and left them mangled shattered on impact with the ground. He heaved deep, slow, sobbing breaths as he tried to focus. The wisps of sparkles swirled around him.
Eventually, he closed his eyes, and embraced the fading warmth. No one bothered to explain to him the chill of death, save his grandmother. He realized in these moments, he didn't like it at all. He burned with determination, but couldn't make his remaining, working limb move. The sun floated above him, shining its rays on him.
He didn't know how long he laid in the darkness, before he lost consciousness. Before Rin's medication fully kicked in. It could have been hours, days. He did not know. He did know, however, that when he finally did, he wouldn't wake again.
Yet, somehow, he did. He couldn't see, and could barely hear. Someone or something was touching him. Raging, scalding heat seared his limbs. He tried to scream his voice raw, and flail his arms, but he couldn't move, and someone or something else had covered his mouth, muffling his voice.
"I'm sorry…So sorry…."
A bright light blinded his eyes from what he could see, and he could just barely make out a round shape floating before his eyes. His vision dimmed, his blood boiled. The Uchiha people died in the same flames that bore them. They did not die or rest in peace.
"I'll get you back home. I promise."
His consciousness faded, mind and body overwhelmed by pain.
He woke again to the darkness of the night sky, and the wind blowing through his hair. Strands of blond hair filled his vision and tickled his nose. He felt no pain. Only weightlessness in his body and a weariness in his heart. He looked around as best his eye with its blurry vision would let him.
'W-where's the light…?' He thought in confusion. He swallowed despite the pain.
Someone or something spoke to him, but he couldn't make out the voice or the words. Only that both felt or seemed familiar. He closed his eye, too tired to continue searching for his sun.
He dreamed. He dreamed of the sun and the stars and the moon. He dreamed of fire, of love, of hatred and determination. He dreamed of his future family with Rin, shortly before she divorced him to be with Kakashi. He dreamed he held the Hokage's hat for a few moments, as it crumbled to dust in his hands. He dreamt his legs getting crushed as sparkles of light and glitter surrounded him, a fading fog of hope and dreams.
He dreamed the sun shined before him. Its large black eyes looked at him in adoration like an obedient pet looked at its owner.
The sun smiled in his dreams, as if it was telling him, "Don't give up yet!"
Months later, in Konoha Hospital, Obito Uchiha slowly pulled himself out of his medically induced coma.
