You know, one might think that two individuals arguing could only go on for so long. That eventually someone would have to relent, be the bigger person and walk away from things.
Quelaag and Oscar didn't seem to get the memo on that particular lesson.
"We're the ones offering everything in this arrangement! You should be on your knee's thanking us for even considering it!"
"You don't even know how to form a covenant! How can you think to offer someone something when you can't even deliver?!"
"I can learn it easily! It is in my very nature to be capable of forming one, you vermin! How dare you question me in my own home?!"
"Oh, is this a "Home" now? Spitting out web out all over the walls doesn't make this a place worthy of the title!"
"I don't spit it out! It comes from-…. IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUISNESS WHERE IT COME'S FROM!"
The two fuming individuals had been going at it like this for the past twenty minutes. Quelaan simply marveled at how they managed to jump from one insult to another for so long. It was almost like a game that neither would allow themselves to lose.
But eventually, despite how entertaining she found their retorts to be, the elder sister knew she had step in and be the adult of the situation.
CLAP-CLAP.
"Alright, you two. That's enough." Quelaan said as she steps a bit closer to the two and to gain their attention. "Honestly, all this for what is meant to be an bonding between the three of us? You two sound like an old married couple with how you talk to one another."
At this, both Quelaag and Oscar blinked for a moment before turning clear looks of displeasure upon each another.
"Ugh, please. If this man was my husband, I'd poison his coffee at the first chance."
"And if you were my wife, I'd thank you and drink it."
Hearing this, Quelaan paused for a moment as the image of the scene played out in her mind quite clearly. The thought of which earned an eruption of laughter from her person. Seeing the confused looks that were directed at her from the action only caused her to revel in the humor of the moment all the more.
The pale witches boisterous giggling and snorting softened the room. It wended its way through the bickering two at her side, enveloping them in its tickling embrace.
Suddenly no longer feeling in the mood to shout or argue with one another, Oscar and Quelaag simply opted to turn away in a small huff in a somewhat immature fashion. With the chaos witch crossing her arms over her chest and the dragon knight raising one of his knees up to lean against.
"Bha, heh, heh, heh, you two are simply the cutest things." Quelaan teased earnestly. "A pity you're both to shy to just outright say how you really fell about one another."
"Are those sorts of thoughts all that you think of? You should feel ashamed of yourself." Quelaag said with a bit of displeasure in her tone.
"I'm simply being honest about what I see before me. There is no shame in that. Heh, if you want my advice, I'd suggest you take an entirely different approach to this." Quelaan said with a sly smirk as she placed a gentle hand along Oscar's cheek and turned his eye's up to hers. "Sometimes a gentle touch is preferable to a fiery one. Wouldn't you agree, Oscar?"
Hearing this, the knight was understandably confused for a few moments, but did not move away or protest her touch. It was quite an odd feeling considering half her body is a giant demon spider, to suddenly have Quelaan looking down upon him with such a suggestive look about her.
"Uh…"
"Yes, go ahead and drool all over yourself indulging in her antics. But you should know that Quelaan's always eaten men like you for breakfast." Quelaag said, not liking the moment her sister and Oscar were sharing with one another. Mostly because she felt her sister could do better.
"Heh, now don't go telling him something like that. He'll get the entirely wrong impression of me." Quelaan responded playfully. "But if you do not care for him, what does it matter if I was interested in getting Oscar "Tangled in my wed"? Heh, heh, heh, see what I did there?"
The pale woman laughed in amusement at her little play on words, not at all bothered by the reference to her current arachnid body. Though Quelaag could only sigh a such a low brow quip. Meanwhile, Oscar gave a faint smirk at what was barely a pun, but was quick to wipe it away from his lips.
"We should stay focus on the matter at hand." Oscar said plainly as he politely turned away from the elder sister's touch. "That matter being teaching your mewling sibling how to form a covenant."
At this, Quelaag's spider seethed with a small wave of heat as she narrowed her eyes at the knight before her.
"But of course." Quelaan said in an all too pleasant tone. "You'll be pleased to know that forming a covenant comes as easily as breathing for our kind. It's all a matter of finding that little switch within ourselves to see it done."
"Switch?" Quelaag questioned.
"Yes. We are, by our very nature, beings of authority after all. Our souls are innately strong and commanding, just as a human's is innately fluid and accepting of change. You simply have to find that certain trigger to will the covenant into being and allow your soul to connect with his." Quelaan explained to her sister. "Duty, passion, fear, love. The exact method of seeing it done differs from person to person, but a deep connection with the one you first form a covenant with is paramount. Afterword's, you'll be able to recognize the feeling as easily as if you've had it with you all your life and can perform it with ease as much as you wish."
"So a covenant is equal parts emotion as well as spirit." Oscar said aloud, showing her understood her meaning. "I suppose that it's to be expected that we are meant to have a personal connection. Fine then. Let's make this quick."
"Agreed. If it gets you away from here, then the quicker the better." Quelaag said, shifting her gaze to the opposite direction of the group dismissively.
However, the silence that followed the two's statements was so deafening that it could only be born out of a stubbornness not to take the first step to forming any sort of furthered relationship.
"Come now, if you both want this to happen, then you're going to have to put in a little effort." Quelaan said as she slides her spider body further in, pressing Oscar's smaller form in between both her and her sisters. "Get a bit closer to one another. Look into each others in the eye's. The more intimate, the better."
With clear hesitancy in both of their demeanors, the two did as requested and turned to one another. However, due to the substantially larger size of her lower body, Quelaag had to lean downward a bit until she was well within Oscar's personal space.
"Now that's more like it. Boundaries should mean nothing." Quelaan said with an impish smirk on her lips. "Perhaps you'd like to get even closer, hm? No need to hold back. "
"This is more than close enough. What's next?" Quelaag said, trying to be mature about the situation and not let her sister fantasies distract her.
"What's next? You simply let things progress naturally. Whatever may happen is dependent entirely up to the two of you."
At this, neither of Oscar nor Quelaag knew what they should be doing to move things forward, but they continued gaze onward. However, rather than allowing themselves to get lost in each other's eyes or holding any such other sentiment in their minds, the two peered on as if waiting for something to just click on its own.
Quelaan, seeing that they were both missing the entire point, felt that she might have to give them a bit of a nudge in the right direction. It took her merely a few moments to think of the exact words to say to do just that.
"Would you two like to know what I find the most incredible about humans and our kind?" Quelaan said softly as she too lowered herself to Oscar's person, though neither he nor Quelaag broke their focus. "It's that humans are all so habitually prone to acts of self-destruction. Their lives barely reach a full century before they die of old age, so you would think they'd value ever second they have as something precious and use every day to better themselves in some way. But instead, they choose daily to drink until they black out completely, engage in the most heinous of debauchery simply for the pleasure of it and go half their lives following only what amuses them. It's positively wonderous."
The pale witch reaches out and grabs her sisters' hand in hers, placing it atop Oscar's right shoulder as she places her own on his left. Giving them both a caring and gentle squeeze.
"Contrastly, our kind does nothing of the sort. We are beings of meticulous order and stability. Our lives are exceptionally longer than any humans could ever hope to be, we can learn in a few months what might take them years to comprehend and our natural strengths and beauty leave them in complete awe….yet it is only with their unique chaotic nature and freedom that we are able to reach a new state of being. It takes a human touch to introduce us to our deepest vices and in turn, allow us to introduce a bit of order to their very beings. That is what the true nature of a covenant is and what you both must allow to happen for it to be formed. Do not think, just feel. Bare yourself to one another. Your strengths, your fears, your desires, your vulnerabilities, everything. Explore one another, leave no emotion left unexplored and find that which will bind you."
Hearing this, neither Quelaag nor Oscar knew what they were meant to do with such knowledge. All that Quelaan had told them simply amounted to "Just feel it and the covenant will happen". Ridiculous. It couldn't be so simple as to just do that, right? They had to be missing something.
And so, the two took a few moments to search their minds for a hidden meaning behind her words. To find some obvious factor that had to have gone over their heads completely. But in the end, they came up with nothing. No secret messages or hidden meanings. It was just down to the two of them, with chaotic orange eyes meeting a dull grey, to just take a leap of faith on things and speak their minds.
And so they did just that.
"I don't like you." Quelaag said plainly.
"And I despise you." Oscar replied without missing a beat.
"You're scum."
"And you're wretched."
"You didn't even come here because we needed help, you came out of some sad sense of pity."
"After everything that's been done, you should be grateful anyone came at all."
"Do you think I'm not grateful to see my sister well again? I'm trying to form a covenant with you, am I not?"
"Do you think I risked my life, or whatever's left of it, just out of pity? That a "lowly human" can't choose to do the right path if allowed to decide for themselves?"
With all these statements, there was no heat in either of the two's voices. They were told to just "be open" and this was what came of it. But they could feel that these minor comments didn't truly mean anything. It was all so painfully…surface level. Not enough trigger anything or draw something out.
They had to go further.
Understanding this, Quelaag paused for a moment as her mouth opened slightly then closed again. Showing clear and obvious reluctance to speak further, but even more so, feeling a deep frustration at having any hesitancy at all. But despite the fact that she still didn't understand exactly how, it was made clear that it was necessary to "explore herself" with the man in front of her.
And so, after taking a few moments to relax and get over her hesitation, Quelaag spoke her mind outright.
"...Can I trust you, Oscar?" The witch asked sternly without averting her gaze.
"What?" Oscar said, understandably confused by this sudden line of questioning.
"It's a simple question." Quelaag responded, the fierceness in her tone not lessoning in the slightest. "We are meant to have faith in each other and share our vulnerabilities. So can I trust you or not, you buffoon?"
Hearing this, though he fully realized the question was a legitimate one, Oscar was somewhat ticked off that she would think that she even had to ask it. But he recognized that she was trying to move forward by saying this, so he responded in kind to her fierce tone with one of his own.
"Of course you can trust me, you moron of a woman. Why would you even think to say something like that?" Oscar said as if he'd been asked the most obvious thing in the world. This, of course, only earned him a seething scowl from the chaos witch before him.
"Well, maybe if you were more convincing I wouldn't have too! You're supposed to be opening up, but I'm the one doing all the work between us!"
"Asking "Can I trust you" is NOT doing all of the work! It's asking a stupid question we both already know the answer too!"
"At least I added something to the conversation! You've done nothing but moan and complain!"
"Fine! How about you just start with telling me a little about yourself and we go from there?! Even think of just keeping it as simple as that?!"
"Fine! Let's do that then! About time you said something that actually contributed!"
As the two were having this exchange, Quelaan was beside herself with pride at how well things were going for her sisters first.
"You're doing great, Oscar. Keep that sort of talk going, she absolutely loves it." Quelaan said whispered in the young human's ear in a not-so-subtle fashion.
"That's it, Quelaan, I've had enough of your tomfoolery. Leave." The red witch said sternly, causing her sister to place a hand to her mouth and give a look of exaggerated shock.
"Leave? My, you're moving quite fast to want to be alone so soon. But far be it from me to hold you back." Quelaan said as she gave Oscar and encouraging squeeze on his shoulder. She then made to get up and take her leave, only for a thought to occur to her. "Ah, I almost forgot."
The pale witch raises her hand and takes a red and gold ring off her finger, before presenting it to the knight.
"Here. Wear this ring, if you would. Quelaag has an identical one upon her right hand. The connection of a covenant works far more smoothly once the two parties have an item to act as a medium between you. And please, feel free to take your time. One's first should always be enjoyed to the fullest." Quelaan said with a knowing smile on her face. "Oh, and Oscar…don't forget that our arrangement involves you taking care of me as well. My sister isn't the only one with expectations of you. But we'll discuss that in more detail once I get you to myself."
With that, he eldest sibling give a sly wink before proceeding through the tunnel entrance and leaving the two alone with one another.
"What exactly did she mean by that?" Oscar asked curiously.
"Not at all what you're hoping she does." Quelaag said plainly, clearly unamused by her sister word.
Now that they were left alone to their own devices and no longer having anything else to actively spur them forward, Quelaag and Oscar merely sat at each other's side without saying another word. They both, rather rudely, agreed to just talk, yet now that the opportunity and privacy had been afforded to them, they instead just stared out upon the scalding lake of lava.
Occasionally, they'd both sneak glances at one another, but neither knew exactly what to say to break the silence that wouldn't lead to pointless arguing.
But eventually, one of them made the step to at least try.
"I'm…I'm glad you two are alright." He said suddenly, earning a slightly surprised look from the witch at his side.
"Yes, well…We're glad you're alright too." Quelaag said, feeling somewhat embarrassed to just say that outright, but matching Oscar's approach to conversation. "My sister especially was concerned about your return."
"I see. She certainly has grand aspirations for someone who was ill not long ago." Oscar said plainly. "Simply deciding that she's going to try and trust a human. A bold choice after everything that happened."
"Quelaan's always been that way. Always thinking ahead to overcome a problem in her way. As the eldest of my siblings, she was always expected to be the best of us." Quelaag exclaimed simply. "And for a time, she was. Until she decided that she was bored of it, of course."
"Bored of being the best?" Oscar said with clear confusion.
"Yes. She was book smart, knowledgeable of the land, well versed in diplomacy and her use of pyromancy was comparable to even my mothers." Quelaag said, being truthful of her siblings' talents. "But Quelaan was dissatisfied with all of it. So one day she packed a bit of her things and simply declared that she was going to "See more of this world". As ridiculous as that may sound."
"Unless what I was told was a lie, your mother is a bearer of a lord soul. I imagine she did not take the news of her prodigy leaving very well." Oscar said curiously.
"Heh, that's an understatement. I've never seen my mother so furious as she was on that day. She threatened Quelaan with everything in the book. Disownment, banishment, stripping her of her status. But Quelaan didn't heed any of it. She simply told my mother to do what she must and left that same night." Quelaag said with a light chuckle at the memory.
"That seems foolish considering you're both of royal blood. Wouldn't other rulers seek her out immediately once she was far away enough from her home? And if not them, there would be others looking to make coin off capturing her without question."
"You don't understand. The Quelaan you're seeing now is nothing like she was before. My sister did not entertain pointless conversation or the whims of anyone. She was focused only on improving herself at every turn and learning all that she could. She was the fierce and fiery pride of our kingdom. Interrupting even a second of her time was to risk your own safety. And heavens help anyone who would think to try something as foolish as capturing her." Quelaag explained, remembering the past quite well and knowing that nothing short of a small army would have overcome her sister when she was in perfect health. "Now hearing all of that, can you imagine my family's surprise when she comes back years later behaving like she does now? Smiling all the time, throwing around terrible jest, being more welcoming of conversation and just…living her life as she pleased."
As she said these words, Quelaag held a small smile on her lips and a look of admiration in her eye's that showed she truly looked up to her big sister.
"And what about you? Did you not try to follow in her footsteps? Live your life as you wished?" Oscar asked his interest piqued on the matter.
"None of us could follow in Quelaan's footsteps…especially not me. The difference between her and the rest of us were as night and day. I wasn't just a matter of ambition. My sister held the innate talent to learn that simply wasn't within the rest of us." Quelaag said lowly with a sigh, a bit of sorrow seeping into the tone of her voice. "She never said it outright, but we all knew that it was humanity that had changed her so much. None of my family could understand it. She'd found a fulfilling happiness in living among you for all those years and never looked back at her old self. I admit, there was a time that I was jealous of her ability to feel such contentment and joy. For I, nor any of my sister, were ever as exceptional as she was. And when you're anything less than the best…you'll find that your value as a daughter doesn't amount to much."
As she said this, there was a sudden feeling of sadness in the witch's voice. Oscar could guess that she was thinking of the complications of the past and what she would have done different if given the chance.
But he wouldn't let her dwell on such negative thoughts.
"There had to be something that made you happy in the past, right? Something that you did that didn't need you to be the best for you to love it?" he asked, trying to change the witch's mood.
The comment seemed to have the intended effect as Quelaag's lips turned up in in a smile and a slight chuckle escaped her lips.
"Well, I…I used to want to be a cook."
"A cook?" Oscar said as he somewhat chuckled himself.
"Yes. I used too sneak away from my room in the middle of the night and try to prepare confections and sweets." Quelaag recalled somewhat pleasantly. "I had no mentor, so I wasn't very good at it. And my mother would always scold me afterword's, saying that such activities were beneath someone of my status….but I loved it nonetheless. Heh, I even had an apron I stole from the royal chef's room one morning."
"Heh, heh, heh, now that must have been a sight to see. You, wearing an apron and trying to bake." Oscar laughed sincerely.
"I'll have you know that I looked amazing in an apron." Quelaag said with a small smile as she crossed her arms over her chest in a shy fashion.
At this, though it was completely instinctual for him to do so, Oscar's eye's shifted directly towards the chaos witches' breast as they were pressed up upon her arms. A fact that Quelaag quickly noticed, far before Oscar could turn away and pretend it didn't happen.
Not one to be bashful about herself, Quelaag wasted no time in staring down upon the human in a superior fashion.
"Hmph, and here I was believing we were having a moment. A smart man would be more focused on the fact the part of me could devour him in a single bite. But I can see that all you're focused on is one thing." Quelaag said, not moving her arms from their crossed position under her womanly frame..
"I am still a man. There nothing to be ashamed of by being attracted to…*Ahem* such things." Oscar said, trying to hold strong to his dignity.
"So you are attracted then." Quelaag countered, not letting him get away so easily. However, she would receive no reply at this declaration. But instead of letting it go, she decided to push it that much harder. "You heard my sisters' instructions. We are meant to be open and explore one another to form a covenant. Boundaries should mean nothing between us. So if you are angry, be angry. If you are curious, be curious. And If you are attracted, be attracted."
She said these words with such nonchalant pride, that Oscar would be lying if he said that he wasn't dumbstruck at hearing explicitly state such things out right.
"Or are you going to tell me that you're not man enough to admit at least that to yourself?"
Hearing this, there came the feeling that Quelaag's words were less of a question and more of a challenge. One that they both understood the meaning and intent behind. One that Quelaag was seemingly not going to back down or be afraid of. And of course, if it was coming from her, one that Oscar wasn't going to back down either.
What came next was simply a product of both their anger and frustration working off one another.
All for the sake of forming a covenant, of course.
Bell Chamber
Quelaan felt a bit of guilt as she sat alone in thought.
Lying directly to her sister face had that effect on her.
But she assuaged the feeling by reminding herself that it was for the best that she do so. The two of them needed to believe that it was by their own power and their own feelings that their bond was made.
But the truth of the matter was that forming a covenant between a god and a human wasn't so simple as just "Feeling it".
True, it did usually require a certain human element as well as being in touch with one's more intense emotions and vices to see the task done, but that wasn't the end of it. To truly form a covenant, it takes decades of mastering both one's soul and learning to accept the truth of both the light and the dark within one's being. A path that required time, patience and talent.
But that was not the only path to gaining the power of a covenant.
Quelaan was old. Far older and more experienced than Quelaag was. She was there to witness the burning of the Arch Tree and the fall of the dragons. She was there when both Anor Londo and Izalith were in their infancy. And in her time walking upon this earth, she had learned more than enough skills and forbidden techniques to cause even Gwyn and her mother some concern.
One of which being the ability to influence two souls to allow them to fluidly convene with one another. A skill likely forgotten by all except those who were alive during the Age of Ancients as she was.
Her sister and Oscar were far too distracted with her speech and their own emotions to concern themselves with her unusual actions with towards them both. Frankly, it was a simple matter to distract them from noticing her needing to have physical contact with their bodies, as well as making them both touch one another long enough for her to work her magic.
She perfectly played both of their minds, bodies and spirits like instruments. Without either of them noticing she'd done anything at all.
Though it did come as a surprise when her sister demanded that they be alone with one another, she'd already carried out the task she intended by then. Now Quelaag simply needed to lay hands upon Oscar and focus her thoughts on truly wanting to connect her being with his.
It was as simple as that.
She wasn't concerned with the matter of her sister seeking out Oscar's touch. If she'd learned one thing about humanity in her time among them, it's that sometimes if you leave them alone with a problem long enough, eventually they simply figure these things out. She had faith that Oscar would do just that, especially seeing as the two of them seemed to be on the same page with one another.
With that, her family's position with this Prophet would be secure through the young knight. And seeing as this Prophet somehow granted his follower specific instructions on receiving at least a visage of a dragons power, she was more than interested in meeting him personally and discovering the extent of his plans moving forward.
Of course, she wasn't planning to just pawn her sister off just to establish a connection with an outside faction. She loved Quelaag and wanted her to be happy. As such, she would be keeping a close watch upon Oscar and how he interacted with her. Not to mention that she planned to have Oscar grow romantically attached to her as well.
Much better to cover all her bases that way and have firm control of the situation if need be.
"If he dies or if his prophet perishes, then we will only have lost an advantage we never planned on having. Nothing will be truly sacrificed if I am wrong. But if I am right, my family will be given the opportunity to build a better future. One established with human and god standing side by side against the issue shifting flame and the shifting of power that comes with it. Something Gwyn or mother could never see the merit in." Quelaan though to herself with a sigh as she remembered the two, as well as the mistakes of the past.
She wished she did not have to manipulate both her sister and Oscar to increase the chances of things working out. But it was best if she guided them into growing as close as possible for things to come.
However, all of this amounted to nothing if her sister did not truly trust him and want this to happen.
Just as she had the thought, Quelaan heard approaching footsteps from the tunneled path. Following her first instincts at the sound, she scurried her way towards the opposite end of connecting tunnel and hide herself along the corner a bit out of sight.
Peeking ever so slightly from her little hiding spot, she saw her sister walking alongside Oscar, clearly glancing around to ensure they were alone. They were both saying something to each other lowly, but with visible anger on both of their faces. The only thing she caught was an aggressively spoken "Prove it then!".
A moment of hesitation, then Quelaag leads the way to the room that was used to allow her to rest. After a few moments more, Oscar follows behind her. The last thing Quelaan saw of them was the minor illusion of a wall be erected to completely conceal where they went.
The eldest sister's mouth was agape for a moment, before a knowing smirk came across her lips.
"Well, mother didn't have so many children by wasting time. Heh, heh, I suppose it should be no surprise that her daughter inherited that trait." Quelaan laughed to herself brightly, clearly proud of her little sister. "Heh, leave a human alone with a problem long enough and they'll figure it out."
With that thought, the pale witch left to give the two their privacy.
Whatever did or did not happen within that room would remain between Oscar and Quelaag. But there could be no mistaking that when they were done and walked free of it, a new covenant between demon goddess and dragon human was born.
HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!
Before you go and give me you thoughts on things I have just a few parting words to say.
Firstly, this chapter was meant to be just a bundle of fun. I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm losing out on that light and slightly comical side of things, so I decided to just dedicate a chapter where characters can have a bit of a lighter mood.
Secondly, I am having way to much fine with the sister of chaos and their relationship with Oscar. I love toying around with the idea that their a lot more than what's on the surface. Quelaag might be rough and a bit rude, but she's also a lot more caring and protective when you get to know her. Quelaan might be kind and compassionate, but she also schemes and manipulates with the best of them.
Also, though I know I shouldn't touch on the past to much, I love writing about the gods previous lives and giving a bit of a picture on who they used to be before the fall of the world. It a huge ton of fun.
Thirdly, considering Quelaag's never held a covenant in the cannon lore, I'm fully open to idea's on what you guys thing her and the dragon covenant combined would do to Oscar exactly. Because right now, I'm still just spitballin idea's to myself on the matter.
And lastly, regarding Oscar and Quelaag, everybody shut ya pie holes! If lovin our local spider-demon waifu's is wrong, then dang it, I don't wanna be right. Not sure how the crowd reaction on this particular romance is gonna be, but im rollin the dice on this one.
Anyway, that all I got to say this time around, guys.
As always, feel free to leave a review and tell me what you guys thought about this chapter of the story. Did things between Oscar and Quelaag progress a little to far past just "wanting to form a covenant"? Was the little inkling of Quelaan's previous life believable enough for her? Was the inclusion of Quelaan manipulating them both and holding older abilities a little too far fetched?
Honest opinions are always appreciated as I'm always looking to improve my style of writing to make this story a bit more interesting for you guys. so don't be shy in telling me your thoughts about how things are going so far. Outside opinions will have a huge effect on how this story will play out.
This is Supreme Gamer, Signing out.
P.S. Okay, guys. Literally as I'm finishing this chapter, I realize I literally have no idea what I'm going to do about Quelana! Crap!
P.P.S What if I somehow used Shiva maybe attacking her as a means to bring her in? Or is that to easy?
