A/N Thank you again so much for all the reviews of chapter 2, they mean so much to me knowing that so many of you are enjoying the story. So without further ado let's see what this ruined house has for Danny to discover. I hope everyone enjoys.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Danny slowly floated himself down to the completely burnt and ruined house that had huge holes all around the side. It was a masonry house rather than wood or any kind of vinyl which had to be the only explanation why it was still standing despite all the destruction. The holes in the side didn't exactly look random. In fact they looked like they'd been taken out with sledgehammers. Probably done via the fire department when they arrived and were trying to vent smoke from inside the house. Danny did a full lap around the house to examine it and see the sides that weren't in the pictures he'd seen at the library before going inside. Since the holes were so big he could just float right inside rather than phasing through the walls.
Once inside he took a good look around and realized he was in what must have been the dining room. There was a pile of ashes around the center of the room but parts of what appeared to formerly be a table were still there on top of a crispy rug. Danny made his way through the completely burnt kitchen that had a charcoal countertop. The living room with the metal outline of a sofa that all the fabric had been scorched off of. The entryway that didn't even have a door anymore, no doubt the fire department had busted that down when they showed up. He even found looked like the remains of an office. There appeared to be the remains of a desk and bookshelf in it and what used to be an old computer that was now completely hollow.
Making his way upstairs Danny started to check several of the bedrooms. First he came across what he assumed was a guestroom as it wasn't exactly the biggest room but had was clearly used to be a bed before it was incinerated. The next room he found was no doubt the master due to it's great size and remains of a much bigger bed and crispy furniture that was most likely much nicer at one point. The last room Danny came to made him pause and take a moment to slowly take it in. Though everything was burnt or destroyed he could make out what it all had been. It had a smaller looking bed than the master bedroom had, a desk against the wall, a dresser with a mirror attached, and a walk in closet full of ashes that were no doubt once clothes. Looking around while he now stood in the middle of the room it became clear that this had been for a teenager. The wall of this room also had a huge hole in it leading outside that Danny was pretty sure was done by hand.
"This must be where she lived. This must be where...it happened," Danny quietly mumbled to himself as his gaze fell on the bed. He slowly let the realization wash over him that right on that very spot a teenage girl had died many years ago. And that very girl might now be one of his enemies that he just met the night before and stopped from taking over the entire world.
Transforming back into Danny Fenton he wanted to try to get a feel for Amberline as himself rather than his alter ego. He slowly stepped over to the side of the bed frame and ran his hand lightly along it, picturing a girl laying here and wondering what exactly it was that happened that night to cause the events that took her life from her. Danny pulled the article from his back pocket again and opened it, looking at the picture of Amberline.
"I don't know if you really are Ember or not, but regardless, you didn't deserve this Amberline," said Danny. Little did he know that a pair of green eyes were closely watching him from outside.
Ember was feeling an overwhelming amount of confusion and terror. Somehow through some sick twist of fate she had ended up back at the house where her life had ended and it was from following the ghost boy she had been hoping to pound into a pulp. She couldn't decide what to do. Should she attack him? Should she flee and come back another time? Should she confront him about why he was here and what he was up to? All these thoughts were overwhelming her thought process and she couldn't figure out what to do. As a result she was frozen to the spot watching Danny stand in her old bedroom and looking around it like he was sad about something. She made sure to go invisible and stay a good distance as to not accidentally set off his ghost sense. Also since all the houses in the neighborhood were well spread out it meant that it was crazy quiet and she just heard what Danny said to himself. His words caused her mouth to drop and a wave of new emotions to flood her brain.
'Wh, what? Did...did he really just say that?' Ember thought to herself as she tried to figure out this foreign feeling. It was something she had never felt before. Her whole body was feeling...warm.
While Ember was watching in shock and confusion, Danny kept slowly walking around the bedroom and seeing if anything was there to give him any kind of indication that Amberline actually was Ember. But there was so much ash filling the room that barely anything was legible. He did notice a couple nails on the wall and the burnt remains of what appeared to be a poster of some kind. Only the corners were still there so Danny had to get close to try to make out what little was there. There appeared to be a small portion of a man's face and it was completely white. And there was just enough of his eye showing that it appeared to have a black star painted over it.
Danny paced over to the dresser and looked at the mirror that was almost completely burnt and hardly any of it still showed a reflection. He tried to picture that Amberline used to stand in front of this and comb her hair and whatever other stuff girls did in their room, something he wasn't exactly an expert on. Looking at the picture in his hands he did take note that her hair seemed very pretty and had a great shine to it. In fact now that he was actually focusing on it she was in fact a very pretty girl in his eyes. Danny didn't even realize that he had started to smile a bit from looking at her picture.
Meanwhile Ember from outside was watching and saw Danny smiling at something. She couldn't see what he was looking at in his hand and was incredibly eager to know what it was. But before she could consider getting closer she saw him opening the drawers of her old desk and gasped when he pulled out a metal box about the size of a shoe box that was still intact despite being burnt completely black.
'Oh no, please not that, don't let him see that. I beg of you tell me everything that was in there is completely burnt,' Ember thought to herself in a panic as she grabbed a fistful of her hair. For reasons she couldn't figure out she just couldn't bring herself to confront the dipstick. She was way too curious about why he was here and what he was going to do. This bizarre feeling throughout her body just kept feeling stronger with every passing second. She couldn't explain it but she also couldn't help but like the way it felt. And she wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Danny was now looking at the metal box in his hands as he walked over to the bed frame. There was a portion that was big enough for him to sit on that was facing the hole in the wall. As he sat down he set the box in his lap and ran his thumbs over it a bit as he thought whether or not he should open it. Since the box was metal there was a good chance that if anything had been inside it would still be intact and spared from the raging fire that had consumed the house.
'What would she have kept in this?' Danny thought to himself as he tried to think of items that would fit in a box this size. Running his thumbs over the latch again his curiosity got the better of him as he unlatched it, slowly lifting the top up.
Inside sat a handful of what appeared to be very personal items and memories. The first thing he pulled out was a photo of Amberline holding up a blue ribbon. She appeared to be quite a bit younger in the picture than the article and she was smiling brightly in it. Recalling what he read earlier it dawned on Danny what this must be a photo of.
"This must be that talent show she won with her singing," Danny absentmindedly said aloud to himself as a small smile formed on his face while he looked at the image. "She looks so happy, I wonder what she sang for the show. Whatever it was I bet she sounded amazing. I just wish she could realize that her singing is more than good enough to succeed without brainwashing people."
Ember almost fell out of the air in shock hearing Danny's words. He was actually praising her singing ability? She couldn't remember the last time someone had actually done that without being under some kind of influence.
'Damn it, why is he being so sweet? And why can't I bring myself to do anything about this?' Ember thought to herself as she wrestled with her thoughts and these emotions she was feeling. She also had a reflection on that night upon hearing Danny mentioning it. It was one of the happiest moments of her life. She had sung the song I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. At the time it was a brand new song that had only come out a few months prior. Singing it for that contest felt absolutely amazing and everyone was applauding so hard when she finished. A smile was slowly creeping onto her face from the memory before she could even realize it.
Putting the photo back into the box Danny pulled out a guitar pick that had a image of a flame on it. He looked at both sides seeing that they were identical but couldn't see anything special about it, at least not without some context.
"I'm assuming this was really special to her for some reason," Danny said shrugging his shoulders as he put the pick back in the box.
Ember saw the pick in his hand and felt her eyes start to shrivel up a bit and almost shed a tear. She never thought she would see that again. It was the very first guitar pick she ever owned. The very first time she strummed a guitar was with that pick. She used to practice endlessly in her room on her old guitar with that very pick.
The last thing Danny pulled out of the box was a book that had gotten very dry and brittle from the heat of the fire, but still intact. Looking at the cover he realized that this must have been Amberline's diary. It was made of now very dry leather and the pages were quite brittle and stiff, but still intact. The cover had the initials A.L. printed on it in a very neat cursive font.
It took every ounce of energy Ember had to not charge right into the room when she realized Danny was now holding her old diary. The memories of the things she had written in there flooded her mind faster than her mind could process them.
'No, no no I can't let him read that. I gotta do something,' thought Ember trying to will herself to move forward but still unable to find the strength to intervene. 'Damn it, why can't I do something, do I for some reason want him to read it?' Ember just couldn't fathom these thoughts. Every part of her body was screaming at her that she shouldn't let Danny read the diary, but for whatever reason she wasn't doing anything to stop it. Almost as if she really did want him to keep going. But why? How does that make any sense?
Slowly Danny opened the diary to a random page and hesitantly read the passage.
"Well it was another day of feeling invisible to the world. The whole school seems completely oblivious to my existence. Whenever I try to work up the courage to talk to someone and attempt to make friends my mind just freezes up and I seem incapable of forming any proper sentences. In fact just last week I tried to talk to these two girls I noticed were talking about music and all I got out was a nervous stutter. They ended up laughing at me and just walking away. Sometimes I don't know how I'm able to sing on stage but unable to have a simple conversation."
As Danny was reading and processing what was written in the diary he felt a huge amount of sympathy for Amberline. He was also a shy person that wasn't the best at talking to other people, but at least he had Sam and Tucker. It seems Amberline didn't even have that much, she truly was a lonely girl that was basically invisible to everyone. Kind of ironic considering what she was now assuming he was right about Ember being Amberline.
He read a few more passages and each one made him feel more and more sympathetic towards the girl. More about being lonely and wishing she could make friends. Or how her parents were always busy and never seemed to want to spend time with her whenever they were around. Some passages seemed to be song lyric ideas.
"It's just not right that you were so alone. You were so beautiful and talented," Danny said out loud as he kept reading. With each word he found himself wishing he could show Amberline that even though he never met her he cared about her and that she didn't deserve to be so alone in her life.
At this point Ember was shaking with a mountainload of emotions. She wasn't even fully convinced her ears had properly heard Danny's words.
'Beautiful and talented? He...he thinks I was beautiful? Damn it dipstick what are you doing to me?' Ember screamed in her head as she fought to hold back tears from welling up in her eyes.
Eventually Danny made it to the last entry in the diary and the date told him it was from the night she died.
*September 7, 1984
"I can't believe it, I was actually asked out on a date today. One of the popular boys, Michael, came up to me at lunch today and asked if I'd like to go to the movies with him tonight. I can't believe I actually have my first date. He said I can pick the movie so I told him I'd really like to see Purple Rain. He's going to meet me at the theater tonight at 7. I can't wait and can't believe this is actually happening. I might even get my first kiss tonight. I gotta figure out what I'm going to wear and write every detail about it later."
That was the end of the passage but when Danny turned the page he found nothing. She never wrote about what happened that night. Now the only thing on his mind was how the date went. Was it amazing, was it bad, was she stood up, was he nice to her? So many questions but he had no way of figuring out the answers.
Ember watched him close the book and realized he must have read the last page that she had written in. Which means he must now know that she had a date the night she died. Horrible flashbacks of that night soon entered her mind and she couldn't stop a few tears from running down her cheeks anymore. That had been the lowest moment of her life and she wished she could erase it from existence.
'Why am I allowing myself to be tortured like this?' Ember asked herself in her mind as she pinched her eyes shut to try to stop the tears. 'I came here to fight the dipstick. He's right here in front of me, right there for the picking with his guard down, and I can't bring myself to do it. And as if the world is mocking me he's being so amazingly sweet, saying stuff that would indicate he might actually...care about me. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING NOW OF ALL TIMES?' Ember was screaming at herself in her head as she saw Danny stand up and put the box back where he found it.
Danny was starting to consider leaving, not sure if he was going to find anything else and he did want to make one more stop before he headed home. But as he was turning to walk towards the open wall something caught his eye in the open closet. It was laying on the floor and despite being completely incinerated there was no mistaking what it was based on it's shape. Walking over to the closet Danny bent down and picked up a completely burnt electric guitar.
This one was too much for Ember to keep in. As soon as she saw Danny pick up the guitar a small gasp escaped her mouth.
Hearing the gasp but not able to deduce what it was Danny looked in the direction of the hole in the wall. Walking over to it he glanced all around outside but didn't see anything. The only thing around there were some trees and he did notice some squirrels running around in them.
"Must have just been the squirrels," Danny muttered to himself as he looked back down at the guitar.
Ember wanted to charge right in and rip the guitar out of Danny's hands. That guitar had been her most prized possession when she was alive and she never let anyone ever touch it. And now it was in the hands of her enemy. But before she could work up the courage to show herself and rush at him she looked at the way he was holding it. He was being so gentle with it and looking at it in a way that displayed a great amount of care. He gently ran his hand along the body with his fingertips, clearly deep in thought while staring at it. He delicately held it in his hands for a few minutes as he was thinking, recapping everything he had read tonight at the library and everything he had found here. The more he thought about it the more it made sense why Amberline would become someone like Ember.
"I don't know if I'm right about my theory, but I think I need to do something with this," said Danny as he transformed back into Danny Phantom. "I'm guessing she played some really amazing music with this guitar and it deserves better than sitting forgotten in a destroyed house."
Making sure he had a very good grip on the guitar so he wouldn't drop it, Danny took off into the sky again. Looking at his watch he saw that he had one more hour until curfew so just enough time to make one more important stop.
Ember had lowered herself to the ground before Danny took off so as not to set off his ghost sense. But now that he had taken off she had to be quick or she would lose him. Grabbing her own current guitar and slinging it over her shoulder she took off after him, making sure to stay a good distance behind him. She kept getting more and more curious about what Danny was up to, especially now that he had her old guitar. If he did anything wrong with it she would not hesitate to smash her current guitar over his head, regardless of all the amazing things she'd heard him say and the strange feelings it was all making her feel.
Using the directions he'd printed out from the library Danny flew over the city again in search of his final destination. It only took him about five minutes before he spotted it. Descending towards the ground he was now hovering over the Skery City cemetery.
As he lowered himself to just above the ground he floated from tombstone to tombstone looking for the right one. According to the obituary he had read she was buried at a lone spot without any other tombstones next to it. After some quick searching he spotted one more lone tombstone and after checking it, realized he had found her.
Amberline Lane
Lived July 20, 1969 - September 7, 1984
Lost in a tragic fire
Danny positioned himself to hover right in front of Amberline's tombstone but made sure not to touch the ground in front of it. He just hovered there for a while rereading those three lines several times and holding the guitar.
Ember had still kept her distance and landed in a tree off to the side so she could look down at him. This place was actually new to her as well since she obviously didn't have any memory of where she was buried.
'So that's where my body was buried?' Ember thought to herself looking at it and noticing how it was a lone tombstone without any others around it. 'Of course, even here I'm still alone without anyone around to care about me. Danny is the first one to ever seem to show any interest in my life. Wait, did I just call him Danny? Crap, what are these emotions doing to me?'
Shaking her head to try to get these confusing thought out of it, Ember looked back down at Danny. He kept looking from the tombstone to the guitar in his hands and back again.
"Amberline, and if I'm right, Ember, I know I wasn't around at the time to be there for you in any way, but I'm here now and I hope that at least means something to you. I think I understand you now and why you were doing what you did last night. For so long all you wanted was for people to notice you and realize you existed. You shouldn't have had to go through that. If I was around at the time I would have wanted to be your friend. I get now why people chanting your name makes you so strong. It makes you feel loved and appreciated like you always wanted."
While Danny was giving his speech to the tombstone Ember was hanging onto every word from above and felt her unbeating heart soaring. This was the most amazing thing anyone had ever done for or said to her in either her life or afterlife. She was actually feeling weak in the knees as a result.
"I can only imagine how much this guitar meant to you back when you had it. And, well, I figured it deserved to be somewhere more meaningful rather than sitting in a destroyed house and forgotten. Afterall a musician as amazingly talented as you should always have her best instrument with in your arms. Even if I'm the only one that will know about it, at least one person now will remember you and your guitar. I understand now why your song is called Remember."
As he finished speaking Danny turned intangible and phased into the ground. Carefully peeking into the coffin he gently positioned the guitar on top of Amberline's chest. Taking her hands he placed them each on the neck of the guitar with her fingers interlacing with each other.
As Danny returned to the surface no longer holding the guitar Ember pieced together what he must have done and her emotions went into complete overdrive. Her voice had started to shake and tears were flooding down her face. She no longer had the strength or ability to stop herself from sobbing anymore at Danny's actions. The things he was saying combined with everything she had watched him do was just too much to bear. It was everything she had ever wanted in her life, for someone to notice and legitimately care about her. Of all the people in existence, somehow her arch enemy was the one giving her all these things and it was making her feel more special than she did when the whole world had been chanting her name just the night before.
'Is this really what it feels like when someone actually cares about you?' Ember asked herself in her mind. 'It feels...so amazing. This feel so much more amazing than I ever imagined before.' More tears were running down her cheeks as she felt wave after wave of happiness flow through her body. She was so absorbed in these new feelings that she had stopped paying attention to what Danny was doing below.
Danny at that point decided that he should probably be getting home as he had only thirty minutes until his curfew. Taking a deep breathe he turned to start flying in the direction of Amity Park. Taking off into the sky he thought about if he still wanted to tell Sam and Tucker about all this and his theory about whether or not Amberline could be Ember. But before he could really get anywhere his ghost sense suddenly went off, making him stop on the spot.
"Oh great, again? Now what is it?" Danny asked himself looking around.
Ember heard him and was now cursing herself while staying hidden behind the tree. She had allowed herself to get sidetracked and as a result Danny had flown close enough to her that he now knew a ghost was nearby. Should she stay hidden or reveal herself? She did find herself now wanting to talk to him about everything but was it really the best idea still?
Danny was looking all over to see where the ghost might be but couldn't see anything at first. But as he was turning around he noticed a faint blue looking glow from behind one of the trees. As he prepared to fire an ecto ray he charged to the side of the tree and was about to fire.
"Got you now you...EMBER!" said Danny in complete shock as he realized now who it was. Stopping himself at the last moment before he could fire he suddenly became too stunned to move, lowering his hand and letting the charged ecto ray fade. Ember was frozen to the spot too staring right back into Danny's eyes. Her own were still puffy from the tears that had flown out of them just moments ago.
Neither of them seemed to be able to speak as they just stared into each other's eyes, trying to figure out what to do and what to say. Danny was now wondering how long she had been there, thinking this was way too much of a coincidence that suddenly she was here watching him while he had been investigating. He looked from Ember, to the tombstone he had just been at, and back to her again. Ember did the same thing looking back and forth between the two. He had no idea how long exactly she had been here but if she was here at the cemetery she had at least most definitely seen what he had just done with the guitar.
While Danny was looking into Ember's eyes he suddenly noticed they looked very red rather than their usual dark green. This isn't anything like she looked last night when she was completely hardcore.
Ember meanwhile was looking into Danny's eyes and noticed how they were lacking the anger and resentment he had last night. Now he had a look of complete confliction. It's as if he's struggling to decide whether or not to attack her or hug her.
After several very long moments of silence and staring Danny finally broke the tension.
"Ember, is it true?" asked Danny in a soft voice, not sure if he was completely ready for the answer he was pretty convinced he'd receive.
Though the question was extremely vague, Ember knew exactly what he wanted to know. He was asking if she really was Amberline and if everything he had just found out about her was true.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
A/N Well it looks like the cat is out of the bag. Ember now knows that Danny discovered who she was and Danny knows that Ember is there and has been watching him. This was not exactly an easy chapter to write. Even though I knew exactly how I wanted it to go, finding the right words to convey the emotions I wanted took a lot of writing and then rewriting. I just hope everyone that reads this enjoys it and is moved by it. This story is still just getting started and we have a long way to go on this journey. Thank you again to everyone for the support, it means so much to me. As always please remember to leave a review.
