Renegades: A New Dawn

Chapter XXI: Doing the Impossible

On the way back from the stadium to the airport, Maddy received a call. 'Hello?' 'It's Belle.' 'How are things going there?' 'We've been in, and had a good look around.' 'Was Jana there?' 'Yes, she was a bit confused so we had to put her to sleep for a while.' 'Once you get her back to the base, leave her in the holding room.' 'If it helps, I took her hair down and removed a tag from her back.' 'Hopefully that's restored her to normal then.'

Two days later

As Jaden flew into Newcastle, he found Blair waiting for him, wearing a red shirt with a silver diamond which encased her name in purple lettering, as well as her club jacket. 'One day these planes will actually be on time. Anyway, nice you came.' 'Said I would.' 'So just to confirm' 'Yes, you can leave at any time. But please, at least take the tour.' 'Of course I will, can't make a decision otherwise.'

As they set off for the base, Blair phoned up the base. 'Hi, it's Blair. Just letting you know we're on our way back to the base.' The person on the other end of the phone was Belle. 'Coffee?' 'You know, I'd love one. J, you want a coffee doing?' 'No thanks.' 'That's one coffee, black 2 sugar. K?' 'It will be ready when you get back.' 'Thanks.'

On the journey back, Blair (attempted) to make small talk. 'Journey ok?' 'Yeah, kind of tired though, flew in straight from Texas.' 'Yeah, we got back yesterday afternoon, and all I wanted to do is sleep. You'd think I'd be used to it.'

'So why did you join the Renegades? Was it just Phil, or something else?' 'Er, I kind of don't really understand. I just knew it was the correct decision.' 'I can completely understand that.' 'I suppose… I just didn't have an identity. I mean, I was always Blair, but I didn't really know who I am. To be honest, I still kind of don't.'

Jaden then noticed Blair fiddling around with the crucifix she was wearing. 'I think I get you.' 'I just don't know if I'm the right me. I'm kind of stuck in a crossroads.' 'I can empathise with that.' 'Honestly, I don't think you can. Not like this anyway. I know I need to talk to someone, but I don't know who.'

'You can talk to me. Blair, how long have we known each other?' 'Since 5th grade. When I tried to sneak into Duel Academy. I even started playing Gem-Knights to be like you.' 'I've known you since you were about 3ft high. I think that you can talk to me by now. I mean hey, it's better than talking to Bastion.' 'Yeah, I don't get a 20 minute lecture on how molecular physics proves that God is a woman.'

Both of them laughed at that comment. 'It's just silly things.' 'I like hearing about silly things.' 'Just about faith really. And nobody outside of the club knows about this other than my sister.' 'I'm listening.' 'I've got a girlfriend, and I'm kind of worried about my faith and balancing them.' Jaden just smiled at her. 'You'll figure it out. If there's anything I know about you it's that you know your own heart and mind. If anyone can balance them it's you.' 'I guess so.'

When they pulled up at the base, Sakura was waiting to meet them, along with Belle. 'Hi, I'm Sakura, welcome to our HQ.' 'Thanks. I have to say, it's a lot bigger than I was expecting.' 'We're expanding at the moment. If you like, I'll show you to our duel arena. It might smell a bit, it's only been finished in the past couple of weeks.' 'Thanks.' As Sakura and Jaden walked away, Belle handed the coffee over to Blair.

'Sure you're ok with this?' 'Whatever the club needs. And this is best for him as well. How you doing mentally?' 'Better, getting used to being here. It probably helps when you're not halfway across the world from everyone you knew.' 'To be honest, there's nowhere I'd like to be less than Michigan right now.' 'By the sounds of it, I can't blame you. Must be difficult adapting overseas.'

'Overseas? I'm from Northern Michigan – Yoopertown. For me, Ann Arbor is overseas. Newcastle is a whole new level of overseas. I still don't understand anyone round here, not really. Feels like I'm still speaking a different language to everyone else.' 'It's not too bad, you just have to try and listen closely.'

'What happened with you anyway?' 'Pardon?' Blair smiled at her fellow Renegade. 'C'mon, we all have a story to tell here.' 'It's not something I like talking about. It's kind of in my head.' Blair then laughed. 'I'm so messed up you wouldn't believe it. Anyone says a wrong word to me, I just snap, totally. It's something I want to get under control, it's just difficult though. But I won't judge you.''Criminal record?' 'Been there, done that, got the slaps on the wrist for it.'

'It was a few years ago now, I was 15 when it happened. I went out to a party, I don't normally do parties but it was the end of the study year, and I liked this guy from school. I got really drunk, I mean absolutely wasted, and then I starting hitting on him. I had a friend, Jessica, she got really angry because she was dating this boy. We went outside, we had a fight, and I pushed her down a hill, she hit her head on a rock.'

'Ouch.' 'She seemed fine, and told me to get out of her sight. Next morning her father told me she had a brain haemorrhage overnight and died. This guy I fancied betrayed me, he made it sound like I was evil, ended up being convicted of Manslaughter, your country might call it 2nd degree murder, got 9 years in prison, got parole after half. Scared of me now?'

'Nope. Sounds to me like you kinda got a raw deal. I mean you were drunk and by the sounds of it she wasn't exactly nice.' 'Thing is, I was in isolation at prison. For over 3 years all I had in terms of company was myself. Literally drove me mad.' 'Schizophrenia?' 'Schizophrenia, Multiple Personality Disorder, Depression, I've got voices in my head all the time. They're usually managed by my medication but it's crippling.'

'And then' 'They found me. They found me and offered me a chance. A chance to rebuild my life, find some sort of purpose and comfort. I just want to work now, I want to contribute.' 'I'm sure that whoever wins the election wil find good use for you. But to answer your question, no – I'm not scared of you. Because you're same fucked up mind that I am.'

In the base

As the tour ended, Jaden and Maddy walked into the office, with Belle silently following them. 'So, what do you think of the club?' 'Listen Maddy, I really like what you have going here, I think it's an awesome place and I think you're great. But this whole revolution thing, it's really just not me. I appriciate the chance to find out what I was missing though, so thank you.'

Jaden then turned to leave, but the doors were locked. 'Hey, I can't get out.' Maddy then looked over at Belle, who handed her the key, which Maddy put in her back pocket. With her pigtails blowing, Maddy then spoke. 'I'm sorry Jaden, but I can't let you leave. I promised my people that I would make the club as strong and successful as possible. My plans include you.'

'Hang on, Blair said this was completely voluntary.' 'Blair was working for me. Because the only thing more important to Blair than your friendship is the club. But I fully respect you Jaden. Which is why I will give you the choice.' Jaden then breathed a hasty sigh of relief. 'Thank goodness.' 'Either you submit yourself to my power and join the Renegades, or I force you to join.'

'What, why?' 'I already told you. You have 60 seconds to decide.' 'I'm not joining you. I'm sorry, but I have made my decision.' As he said that, Belle bound his arms with rope. Maddy then walked slowly towards him, eyes glowing gold as she harnessed her lupine being. 'Join us Jaden, join the Renegades.' 'No.' 'You have nothing waiting for you out there. Kenta isn't coming, he doesn't care about you. The world is selfish. But this, this is a safe haven. We are the only ones who care about you. I am your alpha Jaden.' She then put her hand over Jaden's face. 'Obey your ALPHA!' Jaden let off a single pained scream as his face was covered by her red hand.

Two minutes later

Jaden was stood there, not moving, as Maddy took a breath. 'Jaden, if you recognise my authority, kneel.' Jaden kneeled immediately, and put his arm over his forehead. 'My alpha, how may I serve?' She then patted his forehead. 'From this moment onwards, you fight on our behalf.' 'For my alpha, I would do anything. My undying loyalty is to you.' 'I'm glad to hear it Jaden. Our enemies are your enemies now. And you especially hate Kenta Kobayashi and Rhydian Morris.'

'Kenta betrayed you. He was always trying to take your fame, he used you for his own devices and then spat you out when you started to succeed for yourself. It is your desire to gain revenge on him for everything.' 'I will gain revenge on non-believers.' 'And as for Rhydian, he threatens me. He is trying to harm me, take everything I have away from me, destroy this club as a result. Your ultimate job is to protect me at all costs.' 'I will allow no harm to ever come to my alpha. I will protect you with my life.' Maddy then picked a club jacket off of the wall, and Belle put it on Jaden. 'Welcome to the Renegades Jaden.'

In the lobby

Blair, Lydia, and Freja were playing poker to pass the time before the election speeches. 'What you got Lyds?' 'Two pairs. You?' 'Hah – Straight Flush. What bout you Blair?' 'High.' 'That one's to me then.' Suddenly two £10 notes came flying past Freja's ear. As she looked around, Maddy was there, wearing dungarees over a green shirt. 'Buy in?' '£15.' As Blair gave Maddy her change, Lydia smiled. 'Thought you'd be too busy with your new boyfriend.'

'Jaden ain't my boyfriend.' She then grinned. 'He's my slave.' Blair suddenly turned around. 'You did it?' 'Yeah, took longer than I thought it would. You were right that he refused to join outright. But I managed to convince him. That's now one more weapon we have. Couldn't have done it without you Blair.'

'S'ok. I mean, you did all the hard work.' 'Well I couldn't have done it if you didn't persuade him. I'm not planning on the club finding out until after the election though.' This surprised the elder twin. 'Why?' 'Duh – I want to be elected because people like me, not because they're scared of me. I've spent too long having everyone scared of me.'

Freja then reached over. 'You ok Maddy?' 'So, who's dealing?' 'It's Blair's turn.' As they played, the conversation reached Astrid. 'How's she doing?' 'About as well as you could expect. She's being transferred to North Tyneside General – about a 20 minute walk from here. Main thing is she's not paralysed permanently – she was able to move everything after about an hour.'

'Good to hear. Is she going to be back for the election?' 'No, but she'll be popping back in today, and she'll be given a voting card the day before the election. Dad's posting it for her as he ain't voting.'

'At least she gets to vote.' Maddy then noticed a certain absentee. 'Rio finally realised she can't beat you Blair?' 'No, she's with the Deck Doctor. Also known as your dad - I swear she spends more time with him than you do.'

Maddy rolled her eyes. 'Sensitive spot?' 'I just… don't see that much of him. He's always off doing some kinda business. He could probably make £500 by sneezing and selling the tissue. All I want once in a while is for 'em to be proud of me. But it feels like I'm fighting a losing battle.'

Freja laughed at the suggestion. 'They're well proud of you Maddy. Hannah has no issue with you being president.' 'Which is why she set up an election when I had the right to be President.' 'It's not like there's a bias against you Made, it's democracy.' 'Well there's two people, who d'ya think they're gonna support? I just want a fair deal.' 'Maddy, it will be fair because it's not Rio this was set up for.'

'Pardon?' 'I guess I'd better tell you all now. I overheard Phil and Hannah the other day, apparently Hannah wanted Blair to become pres, with you assisting her.' Maddy then looked at the Yooper, who shrugged her shoulders. 'I had no idea. And I had no intention of ever running. I thought you were doing a great job. Just like you'll do a great job later.'

As they said that, Rio passed. 'Room for one more?' Maddy stood up as she said that. 'Take my seat – I wanna go check on something.' 'You don't have to go for me.' 'I'm not. Best of luck later, you'll smash it.' 'Thanks, you too.' The two of them fist-bumped, before Maddy walked off.

As she did, Blair leant over her best friend. 'So, let us see.'' See what?' 'Your deck silly!' Rio then passed it over. 'It's awesome – he called it "Frost-Burn." Apparently it's the most vicious strategy he's ever seen.' 'Not kidding it's vicious. I'm glad I'm not on the receiving end, that's for sure – you're gonna tear everyone apart with this. So, you got your speech ready?'

'Kinda. I mean, I'm kinda scared about it. Just… it's the first time I've spoken up. And like, speech, I… can't pro… properly.' As she was saying this, Belle passed, and then walked back, before bending down slightly. 'Sorry, I'm not meaning to interrupt anything' 'No don't worry.' Rio seemed confused though. 'Sorry, I'm terrible, who are you again?'

'Oh I'm Belle, Lydia and Freja know me.' Freja recognised her instantly. 'Yeah, I've not seen you around much. How've you been?' 'Not bad thanks. I'll speak to you in a few minutes?' 'Sure, swing by my room a bit later, it's second from the left on the middle, if you reach a rip in the carpet you've gone too far.' 'Thank you.'

She then turned to Rio. 'Hey, I heard about the issues you're having, Broca's area wasn't it?' 'Er yeah.' 'Before I went to jail, I wanted to become a therapist. When you've got a brain injury like yours, the best thing to do is not be stressed. If you're somewhere stressful, don't concentrate on what you're doing, think of something that you enjoy and relaxes you, and just think about that while you're reading out whatever you wrote.'

'Thanks. By the way, I'll sound rude, but you sound a little weird – where are you from exactly?' 'Headingly – it's near Leeds. About 100 miles south.' 'Well thank you anyway.' 'It's ok, I'm happy to be able to help you.'

In the holding room

As Maddy walked in, Jana was snarling, teeth bared, clearly confused. The Stonybridge native just calmly walked around her friend, and spoke to her in her native language, softly forming the words as they rolled off of her tongue. 'Jana Vilkas, mae eich pecyn eich angen chi, seibiant ac effro.' Jana blinked briefly, before she stoped snarling.

'Maddy, I'm so sorry, I have no idea what i did.' 'Luckily we got you before you did anything. I need to ask you a question.' 'Of course, anything. You know I'll try to help.' 'Have you heard of Alex Kincaid?' 'Have I? I was looking into him when I was kidnapped. He's clean himself but he's got links to a number of well-known hunters, including Gemma Ferguson, Donovan Dija, and Matthew Burgess.'

'I had a run in with Kincaid in Texas – I think he's following me.' 'You didn't agree to help him did you?' 'No, i think my exact words were that I would "spear his intestines through his body".' Jana smiled at the words. 'Good girl. Listen, I'm going to the hairdressers tomorrow, and I was wondering if you fancied me paying for you?' 'Thanks, I'm ok though. But I am coming with you.' 'Sure. So... what's been going on while I've been away?'

'Well, the presidency's going to an election, just me and Rio, we're doing stupid election speeches today, butI'll do what i have to in order to get my presidency back. Also Dad's become a "deck doctor", whatever the fuck that means, and I've barely spoken to him recently.' 'You know, it might be an idea for you to start the conversationwith him.'

'About what though?' 'Anything. Just strike up a conversation about absolutely anything, he's a lovely guy.' 'Why can't he talk to me?' 'With everything going on with him? I know you're busy with college and everything, but it doesn't take much.' 'I know. Talking of fathers' 'I know, I'll contact him in a few minutes. I'm going back down to Cardiff next week anyway. Just want to spend some time with him – you'll have to come over one day.' 'You're completely right.'

There was then a tannoy announcement from Phil. 'Attention all Renegades. The election speeches will begin in 10 minutes. Will Rio and Maddy please report to the president's office. I repeat, Rio and Maddy to the president's office. Everyone else, please be in the Great Hall in 10 minutes. Thank you.'

As Maddy went to leave, Jana had one last word for her. 'Be yourself Maddy. Be yourself and you'll win this entire election.' 'Thanks Jana.' 'Now go! Before you get earache.' When Maddy left, Jana smiled. 'I'll repay you. Somehow.'

In the office

Phil was in the office with Rio when Maddy rushed in. 'To decide who speaks first, I'm going to toss a coin. Maddy, as the previous incumbent, you get to call – Heads or Tails?' 'I'm feeling Heads.' He then revealed the coin. 'Tails it is. Rio, your choice.' 'First please.' 'That's perfectly fine.'

In the hall, everyone was stood as Hannah walked out. 'As one of my last official duties as president of the Renegades, I am hosting the speeches. Here, both Maddy and Rio will have the time to explain to you what direction the club will go in under their stewardship. So without further ado, please welcome Rio and Maddy.'

Both girls walked out, and stood to the side of the podium. Maddy looked extremely nervous, whereas Rio looked determined and for the first time, the more comfortable one. 'Now I would like to address a voting situation with Astrid Hofferson. As you see, she is still in hospital after an attack in Texas. She will be filling in her voting card earlier in the day, with Phil delivering her card to her, and then submitting on her behalf. And with that announced, let the first candidate take the stage.'

As Hannah moved, Rio stepped up to the podium. 'I...' She then took a deep breath and continued. 'I did write a speech for this, but I want this to come from my heart. Maddy is amazing, and quite honestly, she saved my life. And when I win the election, I will make sure that she is still right in the spotlight where she belongs.'

'But I can do more for the Renegades than has been done. Because the movement should not be limited to just here. We should be looking to spread the word. We can spread worldwide. I'm proposing that we grow the club by expanding it – my aim is to have miniture bases all across the world, with our main hub being right here.'

'Now I heard people talking about what happened with Akiza and with Claude. In my leadership, expelled members of the Renegades will never be allowed back into the club. They will always be considered enemies of the club, and any application made to rejoin will be instantly rejected. This doesn't mean you can't talk to them, but they are not allowed on club property under any circumstances. Anybody who defies me in this will be expelled from the club.'

'You may be wondering about the status of my "brother" Reginald if I become president. Let me make it clear that he will not be allowed in under any circumstances. The Renegades will stand proud and stand alone – we need alliances with nobody. You're either one of us, or you're against us.'

'Every club member will be expected to pull their weight with scouting duties. If any of you are unable to leave the country for whatever reason, that is absolutely fine, because scouting duties take place in this country as well as abroad. All assignments will be completely optional but a log will be kept of who takes up their duties, and people who don't will eventually be forced into taking jobs.'

'On the subject of jobs, people are allowed part-time jobs, but they have to clear it with me first, so I can make sure it isn't going to interfere with their club duties. You are a Renegade first and foremost, after that you can look at other roles. I ask and demand absolute dedication from everyone under me.'

'I promise most of all, that as president of the Renegades, I will lead you without fear. I will take responsibility, and I will protect you all with my very life, because the revolution cannot succeed without you. Thank you for listening to me, and I invite any questions.'

The only apparent question came from Kris. 'Look Rio, you're awesome.' 'Thanks.' 'But we all know about you having neurogical damage. How's that going to affect your leadership?' Rio's reply was typically defiant. 'If I felt my issues would in any way stop me being an effective President, I would never have applied. And if I ever feel like they are getting in the way, I will resign as president. And I promise you on that: I will resign before I let you down.'

As that was the last question, Rio stepped down. 'And now Maddy.' As Maddy stepped up, she looked at everyone, and saw Jana smiling at the back. Her facial expression hardened, her blood pressure went down, and she was ready to speak.

'I will be straight with you here, I have no doubt in Rio's abilities. I'm not standing against her because I think she would be a bad president. I'm standing against her, and this might be real selfish, because I want to be the one to lead the club into it's golden age.'

'When I think of the Renegades, I think of us as a family. We came together out of a necessity, but we've become one massive family. And people have left that family, people have betrayed our family. And that upsets me more than anything else in the world. Therefore, I would like to state that expelling members is an absolute last-ditch scenario.'

'Anybody who is expelled under my leadership will be able to reapply to join the club after 6 months, as long as they follow a couple of rules. Firstly they must not have turned against us of their own free will at any time, and secondly, they must be able to prove to me and to all of you that they have truly changed for the better. Because this isn't just my club, this is everyone's safe haven.'

'Now I have things i want to address. Firstly, I heard Rio bring up the subject of part-time jobs. And I have no issue with anybody getting one. However, if you are going to, please inform me first and send me details of your hours, so we can fit club duties around it.'

'On the subject of scouting and other club duties, I would prefer it if people volunteered themselves out of wanting to help. These are optional, but there will be a new structure for the club, with promotion and demotion between tiers, a little like a league system, and promotions will be based on what you're doing for the club. That's not to say you can't get promotions without scouting constantly, but the more you do for us, the more we can do for you.'

'Now to finish, Imma gonna be totally real with you all. The biggest problem the Renegades has is a lack of discipline. Everything bad that has happened to us, every security breach, every person turning on us, that has been because there is a lack of law and order in the club. And that comes from the rules. Can anybody tell me where the rules of the club are written down?'

As Maddy stopped, the silence was deafening. 'Exactly. How is anyone supposed to enforce the rules when there are no rules to enforce? Therefore, I am proposing, and believe me, if I get in, I will set straight to work on this, I will create a rulebook. Everyone will have one, and it will be our law. The inmates will no longer run the asylum. Any questions, please ask away.'

The burning question came from Blair. 'I heard something you said the other day, are you changing the application process for the club?' 'Yes, thank you, you've reminded me. I suppose tha's what I get for not writing stuff down, I forget it all. Right, so people joining the club, everyone who wants to apply will have to attend an interview, which will consist of me, the vice-president, and the head of a new Board of Appeals I intend on setting up.'

'The interview will be your standard fare of why they want to join, whether they share our values of equality and absolute dedication, and checks on their criminal background.' 'So does that mean that people with a criminal record can't join?' 'Absolutely not what I'm saying, i do apologise. What I am saying is they will be subject to further scrutiny if they do have one. But they will likely be refused unless they are honest about it straight away. We will take it to a vote, and if we all say yes, then they will be allowed in.'

'If two of us say yes, then they will be able to apply for what we call "Associate membership". In this membership, you will be able to access the base and have your own card, but you will not be allowed to progress beyond the lowest level of the club structure. And one more thing on this situation: should the applicant have a personal connection with one of the interviewers, and that includes me, then that interviewer will be replaced by the next highest ranked member. If there is mulitple suitable replacements, they will be selected at random. Anything else?'

The only person with their hand up was Ashley. 'Hey, is Jana allowed to even be here?' As everyone looked around, Hannah took the podium for a moment. 'That is a question which should be addressed to me. Jana is not a member of the club, but she does have special dispensation to be here, as both Rio and Maddy were informed in advance that they could bring one guest in. However Rio declined this as her guest of choice has recently applied for club membership and is therefore allowed in.'

That was the end of the questions, and Hannah took over. 'Right, the election is in two days, on Saturday, at 1pm. If anyone can't be here, let me know now so I can arrange for you to have a proxy voter. Otherwise, I will see you all then.' As the meeting ended, Hannah stepped off stage, and immediately doubled over in pain in front of her husband.

'What's going on?' 'I'm fine, promise. I'm just not feeling myself today, and really feeling the baby starting to kick now.' 'I'll get you home, and then you can just take the pressure off for the rest of the day, ok?' 'Thank you.' 'You're welcome. You'd do the same for me.' 'What – if you somehow got pregnant?' They both laughed at the thought.

As they went to leave, they passed by Blair. 'Oh Blair, just a moment of your time.' 'Sure, what's occuring?' 'Hannah's having to go home' 'Has something happened?' 'I'm just a little unwell today. I think my immune system's a little weak currently. Listen, could you look after the club for the rest of the day?'

'I love you Hannah, but I'm kinda not comfortable with this. I'll do it, but please don't ask me again after today.' 'We'll talk about it when I'm feeling a little better, but that's ok. Thank you so much.' 'You're welcome.' She then glared at her cousin. 'Look after her.' 'I will do.' The couple then left as Maddy arrived, looking confused. 'Where are they goin?' 'Hannah's feeling peaky, so he's driving her home. And predictably, I've been put in charge.'

'Why don't you want to be in charge' Maddy asked. Her hopes for a clear answer were quickly dashed though by the elusive Shelbyan. 'Just don't like it. I don't like ordering people about. I'm going to ask Kelly to give me a hand.' 'And when you say "give you a hand", you mean run the club because you don't want to.' 'Kinda.'

The next morning

With Hannah not well enough to even get out of bed, Phil was determined to look after her. But she had other ideas. 'Phil, I need a huge favour.' 'Anything, you know that.' 'Megan's coming over to the base today.' 'And?' 'I promised her I'd pick her up from Euston. Is there any chance you could go and get her?'

'And who's going to look after you?' 'I'm fine, I promise. I've just got the flu probably. I'd feel way better if you could go and get her though.' 'Fine, I'll go and pick her up immediately. Phone me if you need anything.' 'You know I will. Now go, before I pass this onto you.' 'I'm fine. Love you.' 'And I love you too.'

As he left the house, Taylor came up the stairs. 'Fancy some breakfast?' 'Not at the moment thanks.' 'So you got rid of him then?' 'Don't speak about my husband like that, he's lovely.' 'I know he is. Why didn't you tell him I was here?' 'Because that would suggest I'm ill.' 'Which you are.' 'I'm not, I'm just peaky.'

'In other words you're ill.' 'Fine, you win. I just don't want him worrying which he would.' 'Sure you're ok?' 'Yeah, think it's just delayed morning sickness. I'll be ok. But I'm not driving while I'm feeling like this.' 'If you want, I'll drive you over to the base later.' 'Thanks.'

In the car

As he got onto the motorway, Phil programmed his hands-free. 'Ring Sean.' Sure enough, he got an answer. 'Yo Phil mate, you good?' 'Yeah, listen Sean, I'm going to have to cancel our meetup later – Hannah's sick so I'm picking the sister-in-law up from Euston.' 'No problem mate. I'll explain to the boys later. How's Maddy?'

'She's fine... why are you asking?' 'I'm concerned about her.' 'Spit it out Sean.' 'It's just some of her social media stuff – I think she's feeling lonely. Keeps going on about not having people in her corner and keeping how she feels secret. And before you ask, yeah I follow her on Twitter.'

'I'll try and have a word with her later. She just isn't very approachable at the moment. Ever since the election was announced, she seems to have closed up completely.' 'So you were saying about Hannah?' 'She insists it's nothing but I can't help but question it.' 'You know it'll be all ok.' 'Doesn't stop my concern.'

'Man, she must be ready to pop soon.' 'Couple of months yet. Just hoping that she doesn't go into labour when we're abroad.' 'Might be an idea to take time off near the end.' 'If I can afford it that is.' 'I'll cover you.' 'Sean, your money barely covers your expenses most of the time.' 'What about the shop then?'

'The shop's only just opened and isn't making much at the moment. I'll take time off if I can, but I doubt I'll be able to.' 'Sure man. I'll have to go, see you around.' 'Catch you later.' After the call ended, Phil drove off.

2 hours later

Phil pulled up to find Megan coming out of Euston Station. 'Taxi for one Megan Cummings?' The youngest Cummings sibling seemed surprised to find Phil alone. 'Where's Hannah?' 'She's not feeling well so she sent me to pick you up instead. If we get going soon, we'll be back for mid afternoon. So get in.' 'You don't need to stop for a coffee or anything?' 'Trust me – there'll be plenty of time to drink on the motorway.'

As they started the journey back, Megan tried to make conversation. 'How's Hannah?' 'She's fine. It seems like Flu - she was a little dodgy yesterday but she had to overwork herself. How's London?'

'Dull. And everyone's just so rude here. If it wasn't for the fact I've not seen Hannah in so long, I'd still be in Australia.' 'I completely understand, I've never seen the fascination with London myself.' 'Well you're Autistic so you've got your reasons haven't you?' 'So do you. I'm no more qualified than you are to have an opinion.'

An hour later

With them having barely moved on the motorway, Megan had something to get off of her chest. 'I actually sort of wanted to talk to you.' The reply was catty and sarcastic. 'Wow, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me. Go on then, what do you want to talk about?' 'It's about you and my sister.'

'Going through this again are we?' 'I wanted to apologise.' 'Ok, who are you and what have you done with my sister-in-law?' 'I mean it. I misjudged you. Badly. I was trying to look after Hannah because it felt like each other was the only thing we had left in this world. And I thought you were taking her away from me. But you didn't. Why?'

'I never wanted to take Hannah away from you. I was always fully intending on releasing her from the spell when the time was right. I wasn't stealing her, I was trying to protect her. I'll be the first to admit I could have gone about it differently but it was the only idea I actually had. The only way I could stop her having her heart broken and stop her kidness being taken advantage of was if I stopped her feeling for the outside world. She would never have not cared about you or Allyx.'

'But then with Allyx and James' 'That was Hannah's decision.' 'So she ain't under the spell now?' 'Not for a long time. It lasted barely a week. I don't know how and i don't know why, but it didn't work how I intended it. That worked out for the better however. My mistakes keep my conscience clear as day.'

'I just don't understand how she was under for such a short time, but she immediately knew what she wanted.' This comment reminded Phil of a conversation that he had with fellow club member Mollie right after Hannah's brainwashing.

Flashback

'Something's not right – Hannah seems to be resisting the spell more than she should be able to. It's almost like her mind was never wiped at all.' 'You said it yourself Phil – she's strong.' 'Strong yes, but not this strong. I pushed this baby to the max. This is bloody expensive equiptment – cost a couple of grand and lots of man hours.'

Mollie then had a brainwave. 'If she was resisting so much, why would she be rolling over so easily?' 'That's the confusion – Hannah doesn't roll over for anyone... normally.' 'Maybe... maybe this "brainwashing" was more of a "brain cleaning"... maybe trying to control her just made her realise what she really wants.'

Phil initially laughed off the comment. 'What – being controlled, being forced to do the bidding of someone she knows and loves' At that moment, the thought struck him like a bolt of lightning. 'That's what you mean isn't it? She doesn't want to be controlled, she wants to be next to me.'

Back in the car

Inspiration having struck him again, he turned to Megan. 'Perhaps I need to rethink my beliefs. Perhaps the only thing stronger than that spell... was Hannah's innermost desires.' 'She always wanted to be with you. But it was never right.' 'So I made it right...' Phil then accessed his hands-free again. 'Call Mollie.'

Lake Thun, Switzerland

Mollie was lazing by the great Swiss lake when her phone started vibrating. 'He's not rung me in a while... what's happened?' She then answered it. 'Hello?' 'Mollie, just wanted to tell you that you're an absolute genius. That's all.' He immediately hung up, leaving her very confused. 'That was wierd...'

In the car

'I may be the youngest, but I am right sometimes. Now where was I... oh yeah, apologising for being a bitch towards you. I was wrong about you.' 'I think we've all learned something here. I'm not asking you to be my best friend, hell I'm not actually asking you to like me. I'm just asking you if we can get on. Because when that baby comes, Hannah's going to need her sisters, and the kid's going to need it's Aunts.'

Megan smiled. 'You're right. And maybe you were always right. Because Hannah's in the best place she's ever been. She's truly happy for the first time since we lost Mum.' 'You know I want what's best for her.'

Further down the road, Megan had another question. 'You remember my Mum, right?' 'Oh do I remember her.' 'What was she like? I'm almost too young to remember.' 'She was the most wonderful woman. So kind and caring, she had a smile which went on for miles. She was so proud of all of you, and still is. She really had a feisty side as well.'

'She was a fighter.' 'Absolutely. She was a lot like Hannah is now, except way less insecure, and far less hot-tempered. Am absolutely termendous sense of humour.' 'Have you ever told her that she's like her mum?' 'Never. I don't want to upset her.' 'You really should someitme, it's beautiful.'

When they finally arrived at the base, Hannah was outside, ready to greet them. 'Hey Meggy! Hope you tow didn't argue too much.' Megan looked at him, and smiled. 'Nah, he's ok. You sure you're ok?' 'I've probably got a bug. I've been in bed all morning. You look great though. New jacket?' 'Yeah, picked it up in Oxford Street the other day.' 'Well how about we go in out of the cold, and you tell me all about what it's like in London?' 'In a word, a dump.'

As Hannah went to walk in, Phil stopped her. 'You ok?' 'I am. I just wanted to tell you how much you remind me of your mum. You're the same wild spirit, and you're just as beautiful.' Hannah cried at the thought, before laughing through tears. 'Thank you. You're a real gentleman.' After a kiss, they went in.

As they did, Megan saw her sister's eyes. 'You ok?' 'I'm fine. Just get a bit upset ocassionally.' 'He told you then? He told me what he was going to say. Honestly, never seen him so anxious about saying something before. Must have thought you'd hit him or something.' Hannah then carefully cuddled her husband. 'I would never do that to him.'

The next lunchtime

As everyone arrived for the election, the polling box was put together. Once they were all gathered, the cards were handed out. In the continued absence of the unwell Hannah, Phil was conducting the proceedings. 'On your cards, you have two boxes. Tick the top one to vote for Maddy, the bottom for Rio. Put nothing else on your ballot papers. As you know, Astrid is still unable to be here, therefore I will be inserting her card as a proxy. Once the card leaves my hand and drops into the box, you can begin voting. Once you have, place the card in the box.'

Jana then came onto the stage. 'You might recognise Jana, she has kindly volunteered to count the votes. I will be observing as an adjudicator to make sure no errors are made.' Phil dropped Astrid's card into the box, and the election began, with Maddy and Rio both stood on the sidelines. Maddy looked very nervous still, whereas Rio looked completely calm and impassive.

A couple of minutes later, the votes had all been cast, and Jana and Phil went into the accounting office so the votes could be counted. As they did, Phil tried to make small talk. 'You're going pretty quick with that.' 'Worked in a corner shop for a couple of years. If you can count change, you can count paper.'

'Has Maddy said anything about being lonely to you?' Jana looked surprised at the question. 'No she's not. She said she wanted to talk to you more, but I told her that she should be making an effort more.' 'I suppose we both could.' 'Difference is you're busy, she ain't. She's just a little introverted at times.'

'How long have you known each other?' 'Only about 4 years. Hated each other at first – teen wolf rivalry and all that. But we learned to get on. She still does my head in though. But I love her, when she's in a good mood there ain't anyone better. Anyway, those are counted.' Jana wrote down the result, and put it in an envelope for good measure.

They then emerged, and faced everyone. 'The votes have been counted. There are 21 club members who were eligible to vote, and of them, 20 voted, with myself being the one who didn't. Of the 20 votes cast, 19 were eligible. I'm not going to say who spoilt their ballot by writing their name, just that they are quite fond of Detroit.' As Blair blushed, everyone laughed. Phil then took the paper out of the envelope and seemed surprised. 'We have a clear winner. With a majority of 14 votes to 5, your new president is Maddy.'

The young wolf looked stunned at the result, as Rio went to shake her hand. 'If I was going to lose, glad it was to you. Now go get 'em Alpha.' After several minutes, a slightly emotional Maddy took the stage.

'I'll admit I wasn't actually expecting this. For all that I've said, I didn't think i had that one. I just want to say that every promise I made will come true. I will be the president that you all deserve. I will fight for every single person here, and I will put everything on the line to make sure each and every one of you is safe. On the battlefield we will be a fierce unit, an unstoppable juggernaught. Off the battlefield we will be united, a group with the same vision.'

'But we cannot do that purely through revenge. That is all well and good, but we also need to educate. Teach people about our cause, allow them the chance to accept us for our talents, truly embrace us no matter who or what we are. We will be more than accepted, we will be loved, we will be truly embraced. That is what I stand for. Yes, we crusade for justice. But we crusade for so much more than that. So please remember that when you represent the club – you represent my beliefs, and the identity of the Renegades that I will continue to fight my hardest for.'

'Now I need a vice president. And I've been thinking about it, and who better than the other person in the election? What do you say Rio – care to join me?' 'Sure.' 'Thanks. Now I get to say this once again – club dismissed.'

In the Segolia Labs

As he surveyed the wreckage of the lab, Kincade seethed. 'We were so close to having ourselves what we wanted – a connected wolfblood, giving us all the information. I suppose we'll just have to get the best one then.' A video call then appeared through a projecter on the wall.

'James, you may see we have a situation here.' 'What happened?' 'I don't know, but I suspect it's something to do the those Renegade rascals. I want Maddy capturing.' 'What's in it for me?' 'Once we have access to her money, £1million.' 'I'll get my best guys on it.' 'I need her alive. Peaceful as possible.' 'It can be arranged.' 'See to it then.'

After this call ended, Kincade made another one. 'Rhydian, she escaped.' 'I thought you had her under control.' 'I did. I'm willing to bet I know who did it.' 'I think we all know who did it. Get teh evidence off of CCTV, and then we'll get Maddy locked up. I get her out of jail, and we take her straight to you.' 'Sounds like a plan.' As the second call ended, Kincade looked at the wreckage around him. 'Ms. Smith, we will have you, one way or another. Run while you can little wolf, because soon, you won't be running any more.'
