Renegades: A New Dawn

Chapter XXIV: Sneer of Betrayal

As the entire club geared up for the long journey to Kalmar, they were notable for the absence of Astrid, which Maddy was explaining to Lydia. 'So she volunteered?' 'Yeah, said that she was staying behind to rehab her neck a bit, try and get in shape to return soon.' She then put her arm around the twins. 'Still got me.'

'Yeah, but you're the president and everything.' 'And?' 'You know, people might get suspicious of being so close.' 'They know I treat everyone fairly.' She then shouted out. 'If anyone's got an issue with me spending time with these two, just tell me. I promise I'll be nice.'

But nobody had an issue, for most of them were focused on the upcoming tournament, with Finn's open mic. Meanwhile Blair had more personal matters on the mind, not un-noticed by her cousin. 'Blair, do you want me to come with you to Michigan?' 'I'll be fine thanks. I needed to ask you something though – is Jade fine to miss your session next week to come with me?'

'If she emails me, it will be fine. All the sessions are recorded so I'll send the file over. I'd do the same for any of the others.' 'Why don't you just create a website for it?' 'I've got someone on it, but it's not likely to be fully up and running for about 3 weeks yet.' 'You sure you'll cope without me?'

'Yeah, I've got Rio with me.' 'Didn't Rio tell you that she'll be late?' 'No.' 'She's got an appointment at college to catch up with some of the work she missed.' Hannah then whispered to him. 'You know, there is someone who can help.' 'You're right.' He then dropped back to talk to Maddy.

'Hey Dad.' 'Maddy, can I ask you a huge favour?' 'Sure.' 'Rio's busy on Wednesday, so I was wondering' 'Let me guess, you were wondering if I could play surrogate teacher while Rio's out.' 'Yes, that's exactly what I'm asking.' She then grinned. 'Get me one of those cool wheeled chairs and it's a deal.'

'Already got them.' 'Pleasure doing business with ya.' 'Thank you Maddy.' 'You know, it was nice spending the day with you yesterday.' 'And you. It was a good laugh. Especially when you started shouting at Orthodox Jews.' 'They looked like the Amish! Seriously!' 'Dare I say you're not the most cultured person ever.' Maddy just burst out laughing. 'I did apologise.' 'I know you did. Just between us though, I think you were right.' They then hi-fived.

At the airport, Maddy ran up to the front. 'Hey Jack.' Jack wasn't responding though, instead facing away. 'Hello? Have you fallen asleep again? We weren't that long.' Jack then turned around, to show his beaten and battered face, including a swollen eye and a busted lip.

'Holy shit, who did that?' 'Come closer.' As she did, he told the truth. 'Don't tell your Mum and Dad, but it's Rob. Because I refused to tell him whether Hannah was flying out or not. The guy's bloody insane.' 'I'll sort it.' Jack then took the gum out of his mouth and flung it out of the cockpit window. 'Not if I sort it first. Might not look it now, bit portly these days, but I used to be an amateur boxer back in Sydney. Won a couple of regional titles. Mind you, this was when I was a teen. 29 now and not put those gloves on in 8 years.'

Just then, Hannah noticed Jack's face. 'Woah, you look in rough shape.' 'Yeah, got ambushed the other night. Was having a nice drink down old Camden Town, and got mugged on my way back. Probably shouldn't have fought back for £40 and a worthless lottery ticket from two months ago.'

'Sure you're ok to fly?' 'Yeah, I can see everything. Purely cosmetic damage to my face. Went to the doctor's, and he said I'll be fine in a couple of weeks. Now get on, you don't have all day.'

In Sweden

A speedy flight meant plenty of time for sightseeing. Immediately everyone pretty much sprinted off, leaving Maddy with just Freja and her parents. 'At least one person didn't abandon me.' 'I mean, I'd be lost without you.' 'Thanks, it's nice of you to say.' 'No, I mean I'd literally be lost. Got no internet on my phone and left the guidebook at home. I was kind of wondering if you'd lend me your phone.' 'No way am I trusting you with my phone.'

Hannah then looked over. 'So where are you two going?' 'Dunno. Where are you going?' 'We were thinking of checking out Kalmar Castle. We're trying to get ideas for when we get married. Just in terms of decorating.' 'Can't blame you, sounds nice. Why don't we do that Mads?'

'What – go to the castle or get married?' 'Either. Unless there's something you ain't telling me.' 'Nope. I am firmly off the market, I ain't being sold today or any day. No buying me, no way.' The four of them walked off, headed for the famous castle.

On the other side of town

Rio and Lydia had quickly lost Blair. 'You do realise she'll be fine.' 'I know, but… well with her grandmother's funeral coming up, I'm just… she's too calm.' 'That's how she deals with stuff. And let's face it – if she's going to talk to anyone it'll be you.' 'That's the thing – she's not talking.'

As this conversation raged on, Lydia noticed something bizarre outside the old cathedral. 'Hey Rio, are those Blair's trainers?' 'Dunno, need to look closer.' As she approached them, she nodded. '100%. Can see the marks where they were extended because they didn't do them in her size.'

'You going in?' Rio just held her hands up before backing up. 'No way. I am not encroaching on sacred ground like that. Also I've kind of got a thing about old churches and shit like that.' 'And if she wants to talk?' Rio rolled her eyes. 'Fine, but you go first.' 'Would you like me to hold your hand on the way in?' 'Get lost.'

As they entered the eerie cathedral, the girls just took in the whole atmosphere as they spoke in hushed whispers. 'It's massive.' 'Cathedrals tend to be.' 'I'm really not comfortable being in here.' 'Would it help if I started singing?' 'Not really.' They then heard a voice from inside. 'I can hear you from a mile off.'

This made Rio completely freak out. 'Holy shit, ghosts are real!' 'I'm not a ghost.' While Rio was recoiling, Lydia walked straight forward, finding Blair knelt at the altar, black Alice band pushed firmly onto her hair. 'Never had you down as a religious type.' 'I'm not… not really. Not anymore.' 'What happened?' 'My faith hates who I am, what I am. So I'm asking for forgiveness and for acceptance.'

She then closed her eyes again as Rio carefully walked over. 'I didn't choose to be this way. I didn't ask to be this way. But this is what I am. So I ask not for forgiveness, but for acceptance. And that once acceptance is granted, that she may rest peacefully in heaven forever more. I have doubted before, yes, but if you just send me a sign, I will never stray again. I ask this in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit. Amen.'

At this point, Blair noticed Rio kneeling next to her. 'I didn't know you believed.' 'I don't disbelieve. Besides, solidarity.' 'Thank you.' 'I am always here for you B. You've been there in my darkest day, when I was too weak to carry on. You wanted to know why and this is my confession. I didn't want to spend 50 years with you wheeling me around, I didn't want to be some… some cripple.'

'Even if you were I'd think of you just the same. You're my best friend and that will never change.' As the two girls hugged, Lydia kept them in check. 'We need to get going soon, otherwise we'll be late. Freja must have driven Maddy insane by now.'

At the airport

As everyone met up again, Freja had not driven Maddy insane, as Lydia learned when she returned. 'Ok I'll take over babysitting now.' 'Seriously? She's been awesome! Although she really doesn't need to spend five minutes posing for every photo.' 'She's a model, remember? Which reminds me, you still owe us a trip down to Freja's studio.'

'Yeah… I kinda hoped you'd forgotten about that.' 'Nope. Just a matter of when you're available.' 'It won't be for a couple of weeks yet. Need to finish off something for college, and Blair's away a couple of days next week.' 'Well we'll sort something out.' With this, everyone made their way to the University campus, where the event was being held. Meanwhile the draw was being uploaded.

Kieran Byrne (24 points) vs. Justin Pipe (0 points)

WDC Tag-Team Championships: The Regiment (Lt. Claude W. Duane and Sgt. Tyranno Hassleberry) vs. (c) Renegades (Phil Robinson and Rio Kastle)

Hearing the draw, Phil was very unhappy. 'You absolute scumbag.' 'It's fine, we'll manage it.' 'That's not the point. He's putting you in danger by overbooking you when you've only just returned.' 'Phil, I will be fine. Withdraw if I have to.' 'We'll take it one duel at a time.' As they rolled up at the campus, they met up with Jaden. 'You know what to do Jaden.' 'I do.' 'The plan commences as we agreed.'

In the campus

The show started with Michael Adams in the centre of the duelling zone, along with Marc Jacobs. 'Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome back to the WDC, after an absence of several years, the one and only Fearless Finn Hofferson.' The now familiar music hummed across the entire duel arena as the Fearless One made his way down slowly, Once arrived, he received a microphone as the fans sat, still in disbelief that he had returned.

'A long time it has been. But the one thought that always stuck with me, was that when the time was right I would return. And the time was right. So we spoke, did myself and Michael. What was agreed was that I would prove what I said all those years ago – that our current World Champion is nothing more than a fraud and a liar. It is easy to become a World Champion when you have a cult of followers with no intelligence of their own to strike their own course. I returned to put the wrongs right once again.'

Marc then approached him. 'Some questions, if you don't mind?' 'Certainly not. On this occasion I will answer those questions I see as appropriate.' 'Firstly, what is it you hate about our world champion, Phil Robinson.' 'I have said before. I do not hate he, I simply have no desire for the top duellist in the world to be… how shall we say, mediocre. I wish for us to be represented by somebody unworthy.' 'Secondly, a question many people wish to know, why did you disappear?'

Just as Finn was about to answer, a series of sirens started up, before People Like Us played and Maddy, Blair, Kelly, and Ashley emerged. Maddy was about to speak when suddenly Blair tapped her on the shoulder, and then took the microphone herself. And she was in a particularly combustible mood.

'Go on then Finn, tell us – why did you run away?' 'To answer somebody like yourself would be a wasted effort.' 'Would it really? Or is it just that you don't want to admit the truth to yourself. You ran away because you know that you're not good enough to compete here anymore. You were never good enough to compete here. Face it, you're yesterday's news.'

'And what of you? What gives some… some girl… the right to challenge my authority, my supremacy? What is it which allows you to do so? What are you – some girl?' Blair responded by getting right into Finn's face to the point where security had to rush out in order to keep her off of him.

'I'm not "some girl". I'm Blair f'n Flannigan. I'm the world number one, and I'm grieving so I'm really not somebody to be messing with today. It's easy when you can pick and choose your family, when you get to just abandon somebody who loves you and spent every day for nearly a decade missing you, wondering what happened, thinking you were dead! Tell me, when you were hiding, running away, did you ever give a thought to your family?'

'I do not need to provide answers to the likes of you.' 'You're a spineless, gutless coward who clearly cares about nobody apart from himself. It's easy when you feel you have the divine right to make people believe you are dead when in fact you're just unable to face the fact that you were wrong.'

Michael then intervened. 'You are interrupting a very important interview. Go away.' 'What are you – his babysitter?' 'Better that than sleeping with him. Because who would think of sleeping around like that, especially when they have a crucifix around their neck? What self-righteous person would do that?'

Blair was about to explode with rage when Maddy started to calm her down. She responded by popping the large cast off of her arm, making it crumble onto the floor. 'Let's duel right now – if you're not too scared that is.' The response came from Michael. 'You don't deserve to duel Finn Hofferson. He is a legend and you are an ungrateful runt. So he gets to choose who he duels.' Finn and Michael then left together, as Maddy restrained Blair verbally.

In MGA's office

Michael was sat observing the action on a screen when his secretary walked in. 'Mr. Adams.' 'What?' 'The Board of Directors have asked me to inform you that your conduct earlier talking to Blair Flannigan was completely unacceptable and in fact they consider it to be homophobic. As a result you have been put on gardening leave indefinitely. They also said to tell you that a replacement will take over on an interim basis. The replacement is on his way to this office.' Just then, there was a firm knock on the door. 'Come in.' The replacement then opened the door.

'Well if it isn't Mikey.' A look of total despair then opened up on Michael's face. 'Of all the people, why him? Of all the people to choose, why does it have to be Geoff Maltby?' The Oracle just unzipped his jacket, revealing a darts-themed shirt. 'So when are you moving?' Michael just walked out, in total and utter disgust.

In the duelling zone

As the Swedish flags waved around the oval arena, Kenta walked out for the first duel, still looking annoyed at failing to capture the WDC Championship. 'Introducing first, from Kyoto, Japan, the Big Deal – Kenta Kobayashi.' While he was making his way down, he was analysed by D.J. Topper. 'Kenta Kobayashi is a veteran of the WDC and is never to be taken lightly. His Inviting Danger! deck specialises in tempting the opponent to wear themselves out and give himself advantage.' As Kenta waited, there was no sign of his opponent.

Suddenly Maddy's music hit, and she walked out, hair slicked into a ponytail. 'What are you doing here?' 'Sorry, I had an announcement to make and I decided you might want to hear this one. Because at Renegades HQ, we've been recruiting. And we only want the best. So introducing our newest client, from Renegades HQ, North Shields, England, the Supreme King – Jaden Yuki!'

Kenta stood in disbelief, simply repeating the word 'No' over and over again as Jaden walked out, wearing a Renegades shirt and club jacket. He shook hands with Maddy as the commentators discussed the developments.

'Did you expect that Kalin?' 'You know D.J., I expect anything with the Renegades these days. Especially with Jaden, Blair was probably heavily involved. She and Jaden have known each other for a lot of years now and have always been close. All I know is this is not good news if you're not a Renegade.'

In the zone, Jaden and Kenta faced off. 'We talk about this. Come on, we talk.' 'No, we duel.' 'Whatever they tell you, you don't listen, ok? Don't listen.' 'I was shown the truth. And in exchange, I must show you no mercy.'

Kalmar Katastrophe Round 1: Jaden Yuki LP:4000 vs. Kenta Kobayashi LP:4000

Turn 1: Jaden: 'I draw. I activate the Field Spell known as Supreme King's Castle.' As Maddy watched on, proud as punch at her handiwork, a sinister black castle rose up from the ground, surrounded by a fiery moat. 'Next I activate Polymerisation. This fuses together Yubel and Evil Hero Malicious Edge to summon Evil Hero Malicious Fiend (Atk:3500).'

'You need Dark Fusion for that do you not?' 'You are far from mistaken. That's where the Castle comes in – it allows me to substitute any Fusion effect for Dark Fusion. I end my turn with two face-downs.'

Kenta: 'I draw. Effect of Danger! Bigfoot! You choose one card from my hand' 'I know how your card works. I choose the middle card.' Kenta then discarded Sakuretsu Armour and summoned Bigfoot (Atk:3000). 'And now I draw one card. It is this – the Field spell card Realm of Danger!'

While the Castle remained on Jaden's field, a misty terrain appeared on the opposing side. 'While on this field, Bigfoot can attack directly, and you cannot attack it. You may however, attack me. Bigfoot, attack!' 'I activate the Trap card Elemental Absorber. They say that prevention is better than the cure. And this is just the prevention. By banishing a monster from my hand, I can stop monsters of the same attribute from attacking. I banish D.D. Scout Plane.'

As Bigfoot lumbered over, the Elemental Absorber appeared as a spiked dome, which spun before a purple wall covered Jaden's field. 'I lay a monster face-down, another face-down will end my turn.'

Jaden: 'I draw. I lay two face-downs and end my turn.' 'Are you not interested in attacking?' 'I thought I'd prolong your suffering.'

Kenta: 'You will pay for your mercy. I draw!' 'I activate my face-down Skull Invitation. Now every time a card is sent to the graveyard, it's owner loses 300 points.' 'I will end my turn' 'You're not allowed.' 'Why is this?' 'Because I wasn't showing mercy. In fact quite the opposite. I activate the effect of Malicious Fiend. During your turn, your monster are switched to Attack mode and have to attack Malicious Fiend (Danger! Chupacabra Atk:1500).'

Chupacabra's tongue shot out towards Malicious Fiend and Bigfoot came rushing in, while the Evil Hero shot out razor-sharp needles in return, destroying them both and wounding Kenta (Kenta LP:4000-500). 'What happened to you? You fought with honour, respect? And now what?'

'Now I fight for myself. I'm not here to be walked on anymore. The effect of Skull Invitation activates. Two of your cards went to the graveyard, so you lose 600 Life points.' Kenta was enveloped in a harsh red light, which slowly drained his energy and his points (Kenta LP:500-0).

With Kenta down after the duel, Jaden looked down at him, and immediately turned around. As he and Maddy went to leave though, Spica appeared in front of them. The two former friends locked eyes, as the fans looked on in intense interest. Eventually it was Spica who spoke.

'I'm here to get you back Maddy.' 'I'm already gone. Or at least what you're trying to save.' 'I don't believe that for a second.' 'I want my friend back. And I'm going to make sure I get it.' 'Why does everyone know better what I want better than me?' 'Because you were being manipulated. I want things back to how they were.' 'Where've I heard that before?' 'I couldn't care less about Rhydian if that's what you mean. I just want my friend back rather than this… this thug that you've become.' 'I'm no thug. I'm just not meek. I'm me now. And you're not going to change me.' 'Trust me, I have my ways.' Spica then left, Maddy watching on.

Backstage

Maddy and Jaden were on their way back when they were stopped for an interview. 'Just a minute please. Maddy, this was your plan?' 'Kenta screwed up our plan once. I wasn't going to let him get in the way again. So I cut my pet loose.' 'How long has Jaden been with you?' 'Long enough.'

Just then, Maddy and Jaden were both ambushed by a purple light from just off-camera. As it panned round, Vector was stood there, and started laughing straight into it. 'Tick tock goes the clock, your daughter's in the mire. Tick tock goes the clock, soon falls your empire!' He left, as a dazed Maddy was helped back to her feet by Jaden.

In the private room

The club were waiting for Maddy and Jaden to return, when a skinny delivery man walked in. 'I have a delivery for a Hannah Cummings?' She smiled. 'Thanks.' As she opened it, she found a vibrant bouquet of flowers sitting inside. 'They're beautiful!' Just as she said that, Phil walked back in.

'Thank you for the flowers darling.' Phil however, looked confused. 'I didn't order those for you.' 'You didn't?' No. I mean they were supposed to be a surprise, but the ones I ordered you are supposed to be delivered to our house. Besides, I ordered white roses, not… whatever they are.' Blair then came up behind him. 'The word is Fuscias.'

While Phil was trying to work out how Blair knew about flowers, Hannah was reading the tag on the flowers, and got very annoyed. 'It's Rob.' 'What – again?' 'I recognise the writing.' Immediately her husband got on the phone. 'Who are you phoning?' 'Frances.' Blair looked concerned.

'Who's Frances?' 'Frances Bishop – she's our solicitor. Known her about 6 years, back when she was a trainee. Her mother went to the same catering college as Phil. Lovely girl, little high-strung at times though. Frances that is, not her mother.' Meanwhile, Frances had finally come to the phone.

'Hello, this is Frances, how can I help?' 'Hi it's Phil.' 'Well hasn't it been a while? How can I help you?' 'I just wanted to ask you a legal question. How easy is it to get a restraining order?' 'It's not so simple as just getting a restraining order. Are you nearby right now?' 'No, we're in Sweden.'

'Well if you're both free, I have an appointment next Monday at 2:20pm.' 'I'll just ask her. Hannah, you available next Monday?' 'Yeah, as long as it's after 11.' '2:20?' 'I'm available.' 'That's great thank you. What were you saying?' 'Yes, it's not so easy as to just get an order. You have to prove that you're either being harrassed or being threatened with violence. When you get here, explain what's going on and I'll see what we go.' 'Thank you Frances.'

While he was on the phone, Nash defeated Don, Radley defeated Robert, and Typhus defeated Kari. With that happening, Blair was trying to fire up Rio ahead of her duel. 'First 1-1 back. Remember, if you're going to attack, don't until you know the coast is clear.' 'Yeah I know.'

'I'm not good at giving rousing speeches. But I am good at making sure you win. Stay calm.' 'But not too calm.' 'Exactly what I was about to say. One more thing by the way.' 'Yeah?' 'Approach duels like your Muay Thai. Read your opponent and then attack. Find their weaknesses.' 'And strike at them. Thanks.' Rio then laughed. 'He's behind me isn't he?' 'Yep.' 'How long for?' 'Long enough.'

Phil smiled, putting his hand on his cousin's shoulder. 'Someone's got a future as a coach I think.' 'Yeah… no thanks. I'd rather be a duellist.' 'You'll be back in no time. I've been talking to Sakura, we're… negotiating. She's a hard nut to crack that one.' 'No kidding.' Phil and Rio left for the duelling zone with Blair nervously watching on.

In the duelling zone

Rio came out first to her new music, her coach stood by her in sunglasses and a baseball cap. They walked down together, as she was introduced. 'The following is a first round duel in the Kalmar Katastrophe tournament. Introducing first, from Twin Falls, Idaho, she is one half of the WDC Tag-Team Champions, Cold-Blooded Rio Kastle.' Kalin gave the bio on her as Rio raised her fist in the duelling zone.

'Rio Kastle is back after recovering from life-threatening injuries and is back with a vengeance. Her brand-new Frost-Burn deck hasn't been used in active competition yet, but her manager claims that it's the most violent deck he's ever seen. Watch out for that one.'

Shortly afterwards, a male voice started shouting "Chazz it up!", before being joined by several others. And then he emerged with duel-layered black hair spiked in several directions, wearing a slick black jacket. 'Introducing her opponent, from Midtown, New York, he is Black Thunder – Chazz Princeton.' As the cocky New Yorker sneered his way down, he was introduced by the announcers.

'Chazz Princeton is part of the famous Princeton real estate empire, and the size of his wallet is only matched by that of his ego. His Armed Level Estate deck requires time to get going sometimes, but rewards with near-unmatched power and removal.'

In the zone, the two of them faced off. 'So I'm up against a little girl. Well just so you know, I have no issue with making little girls cry.' Rio didn't say a word. 'What's wrong, brain freeze? Or are you in awe facing a graduate of the famous Kaiba Duel Academy.' Rio retorted with a stinging barb. 'Didn't Blair Flanagan go there as well?' Chazz was briefly rattled, before regaining composure. 'No.' 'Well let's duel. I'm not paid by the hour.'

Kalmar Katastrophe Round 1: Rio Kastle LP:4000 vs. Chazz Princeton LP:4000

Turn 1: Chazz: 'I draw. I summon Armed Dragon LV3 (Atk:1200). Next I activate Level Modulation. By allowing you to draw two cards, I can rank my LV3 up to Armed Dragon LV5 (Atk:2400). I end my turn with two face-downs.'

Rio: 'Well then it's my move! I activate Dark Room of Nightmare. Next I set a monster and end my turn with a face-down.'

Chazz: 'I draw. I'll attack with Armed Dragon LV5. Serrated Saw Blades!' The Level 5 Dragon unleashed three saw blades from it's stomach which tore straight Rio's monster (Stealth Bird Def.:1700), destroying it. 'Your deck's an absolute joke.' Rio though, smiled. 'Joke's on you because when Stealth Bird is flipped, you lose 1000 points. And don't forget about Dark Room.'

The spirit of the bird flew out of Rio's graveyard, and dropped an egg right in front of Chazz which then exploded (Chazz LP:4000-2700). 'You think you're so smart don't you dealing damage? Well you've seen nothing yet. Because my Level 5 Dragon destroyed your bird, I can now level it up to Armed Dragon LV7 (Atk:2800). I end my turn.'

Rio: 'I draw. I summon Blizzard Thunderbird (Atk:1600). And by discarding one card, I can summon Sirenorca from my hand and another from my graveyard (Atk:2200)x2. With that, Thunderbird is forced to return to my hand. Now I overlay my two Sirenorcas to build the overlay network and Xyz summon! Get ready to feel the freeze as my blood runs ice-cold. Freeze the skies, Ice Princess Zereort (Atk:2500).'

'Your monster's pathetic, just like you.' The trash talk however, didn't' seem to register with the tag champion. 'How do you counter a threat that you don't hear coming? I activate Wings of Silence, equipping them to Zereort.' Zereort grew a pair of black wings which whipped up blustering winds (Atk:2500-2800). 'Now for her ability. By detaching one material, your monster loses all it's Attack points. Subzero Subtraction!'

Zereort crafted a ball of pure absolute zero, which drained all the colour from Armed Dragon as it faded (Atk:2800-0). 'Attack! Wing Splitter!' Chazz laughed at the thought of the attack, until he realised his face-down Mirror Force wasn't activating. 'What – did you not think I saw that coming? Wings of Silence has another effect. Zereort doesn't care about your Spells and Traps now.' Zereort flew in, splitting the Armed Dragon in two with her razor-sharp wings, destroying it (Chazz LP:2700-0).

With Rio winning, she walked up to Chazz, and made the salute over him. 'Have an Ice day Chazz.' She was then approached for an interview but Phil stood in the way. 'From now on my clients' interviews go through me.' 'Well… may I first ask about Rio's new deck?' 'It isn't a new deck, it's an extension of her old build. We took the deck apart, and rebuilt it with a few cards switched around for better consistency.'

'Is this something you both did?' 'We were working on it together. I provide advice and assistance to my clients.' 'So you have Rio now, is anybody else in your sights?' 'Rio and Blair are my current clients. At this time I want to focus my energies on those two.' 'And the future?' 'I don't make promises about the future, it's not something I can guarantee.'

'I have to ask, what did you make of your client Blair's words earlier?' 'Blair is fully entitled to say whatever she likes. Interviews go through me unless Rio or Blair say otherwise.' 'But we really want to talk to Rio, not her manager.' Rio then took the microphone, and shot the idea down. 'Well Rio doesn't want to speak to you.' She then passed the mic back to her manager. 'I think this interview is over.'

Backstage

'So what did you think?' '8/10. He didn't make it particular difficult for you, but you were clinical. You've not lost a step. If anything you've improved.' Rio just smiled. 'Thanks.' 'What for?' 'All this. Wouldn't be here without you.' 'You wouldn't be here without your own hard work. I just provided the confidence. Now you go – start recovering for your next duel.'

While Rio left, Phil went the other way, intending on going to see MGA to dispute the tag title duel. However he ended up running into an old rival instead, and another legend of the WDC – Yusei Fudo.

'Well look who it is. I thought you'd given duelling up to become a physicist.' 'I did. I actually came over here as an invitation from Kalin. But I wanted to see you and Hannah as well.' 'I've not heard that often recently.' 'Firstly congratulations on the relationship.' 'Thanks.'

'I actually wanted to talk to you about this duelling school you've got.' 'What about it?' 'I was thinking that I might come and help out with a couple of your lessons. I'm coming over to England for a conference in about a month, and then I've got two weeks off. Would you like that?'

'I'll speak to Hannah about it.' 'I understand, you can't give me an answer immediately. I'll see you around then.' 'Absolutely.' 'By the way, just between us, I think Blair's the next big thing. She's really good.' 'She will be when she's cleared. Really hungry for success.' 'Hopefully that's soon.'

Back with the club

Lydia was understandably nervous, with a duel against Akiza quickly approaching. 'Should I write out my will now?' Maddy just sat next to her. 'You'll be fine. I promise you'll be ok.' 'You coming out there?' 'No. Akiza's angry enough and there's nobody she hates more than me at the moment. If I was there I'd be putting you in more danger. I do have something for you though.'

Maddy then produced a pink and black bodysuit. 'Dad wrote it down for me, I don't understand any of this shit, but here we go: "It's made of Spectra, also known as Ultra-High Weight Molecular Polyethylene. It's a very strong thermoplastic which is incredibly resistant to impacts. Very light as well. It should protect you." I promise I'll be there, just out of sight. I don't need to put you at increased risk. Now why don't you try the bodysuit?'

When she tried it on, Lydia was surprisingly impressed. 'It's not bad actually. You could almost call it comfortable. How much did it cost?' 'Few hundred quid. I don't know exactly. He always rounds it up to the nearest hundred when he's taking money from the club account. So like, he told me 600, but it's probably a little less.'

Freja then approached her sister, but her usual smile was replaced with worry. 'You don't have to go through with this.' 'I do. What message does it send if I don't? Besides, I'll be fired.' 'Better that than hurt. But if you're going to insist on doing, I'll come with you.' 'Thank you.'

As they embraced, Phil walked back in. 'How much did this Spectra thing cost?' 'Kate charged me £568, but I suspect it cost more than that. She's been pestering me non-stop to join the club for weeks. I keep telling her, it's nothing to do with me.' 'Put in a good word?'

'I've already sent Maddy three emails and two texts about it.' Freja then asked a sensible question. 'Did Kate ask what it was for?' 'I will confess, she was rather confused. I have no idea why she just laughed when I asked her if it could withstand telekinesis though.' 'I have no idea...'

In the duelling zone

A nervous Lydia walked down to the zone first, accompanied by Freja and Phil. 'The following duel is a Non-Championships duel. Introducing first, from Renegades HQ, North Shields, England, Lydia McKinna.' When she arrived in the zone, she took her jacket off to reveal the bodysuit, which the fans cheered for, due to how skintight it was.

'Lydia McKinna is the elder of the twins, and trying to make her way in the world of duelling. Considered the steadier and more pragmatic of the two, she utilises a Ritual Fairy deck which prioritises defensive sturdiness and tries to restrict her opponent's moves, forcing them into a corner.'

Akiza then emerged, and was accompanied by her former "friend" Sayer. 'Introducing her opponent, accompanied by Sayer, from Tacoma, Washington, the Black Rose – Akiza Izinski.' Akiza walked straight down as Maddy watched from just behind the entrance gate, with the crowd favouring the ex Renegade.

'Akiza Izinski was once a proud member of the Renegades, but those happy days seem to be over for this experienced yet tormented soul. She's recently adopted a sadistic new Poison Aroma deck, which sees Akiza get stronger while her opponents have the will to fight drained slowly.'

The two then faced off with each other. 'I'm sorry Lydia, but I must destroy you. I will leave none.' 'Try it. I'm not scared of you.' 'Have you tried telling your eyes that? I can see through you. Let's get started.'

Non-Championship Duel: Akiza Izinski LP:8000 vs. Lydia McKinna LP:8000

Turn 1: Lydia: 'I'll start. I activate Terraforming. This allows me to add a Field spell to my hand. I choose The Sanctuary in the Sky. Which I'm now activating.' When the temple arrived, Lydia considered her next move. 'I summon Warrior of Zera (Atk:1600). And because Sanctuary is out, I can tribute it to summon Archlord Zerato (Atk:2800). I also activate Shard of Greed. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Akiza: 'I draw. I summon Evil Thorn (Atk:100). By activating it's ability, I can deal you 300 points of direct damage and then I can summon my other two Thorns.' The spiny thorn expanded and then popped, with the spines bouncing off of Lydia's bodysuit (Lydia LP:8000-7700).

'I see… well I get a couple more Thorn anyway (Atk:100)x2. Which I'll immediately overlay to build the overlay network and Xyz summon Sylvan Princessprite (Atk:1800). Now I activate her ability. By detaching an Xyz material, I can flip the top card of my deck. If it's a Spell or Trap, I add it to my hand. Otherwise it goes to my graveyard.' Akiza then flipped the card. 'It's a Trap – Solemn Wishes. I end my turn with two face-downs.'

Lydia: 'My turn. I activate the effect of Archlord Zerato. By sending Cyber Angel Natasha from my hand to my graveyard, I can destroy any monsters on your field.' The incredible burst of light from Zerato razed the field, scorching Akiza's monster. 'Now attack her directly. Sacred Surge.'

Still showing no rage at all, Akiza responded. 'I activate my face-downs Dried Winds and Draining Shield.' The activated Shield held firm, turning the fierce attack into harmless sunshine (Akiza LP:8000-10800). 'And when I gain Life points while Dried Winds is on the field, I can destroy one monster on your field. Say goodbye to Zerato.' The winds blew, and Zerato appeared to suffocate, before bursting.

Shaken, Lydia desperately tried to come up with another plan. 'I'll set a monster and end my turn.'

Akiza: 'I draw. I activate the Spell card Ancient Leaf. Because I have at least 9000 Life points, I can pay 2000 (Akiza LP:10800-8800), and draw two cards. One of which is Aromage Laurel. I can Special summon her from my hand as long as I have more Life points than you (Atk:800). Next I summon Aromage Rosemary (Atk:1800).'

'Now I activate the Spell card Dian Keto the Cure Master. This gives me 1000 more Life points (Akiza LP:8800-9800). And thanks to the ability of Aromage Laurel, when I gain Life points, she can turn Rosemary into a Tuner monster. I tune Level 4 Rosemary and Level 1 Laurel now to Synchro summon Aromaseraphy Rosemary (Atk:2000).'

'Rosemary's effect is active. When she's on the field and I have more Life points than you, she gains 500 Attack points, as do all my Plants (Atk:2000-2500). Attack.' Powerful spores emerged from Rosemary's angelic wings and surrounded Lydia's monster (Skelengel Def.:400), destroying it.

'When Skelengel is flipped, I get a card to replace it.' 'Like I care. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Lydia: 'I draw. I activate Oracle of the Herald. By dispatching monster whose Levels equal 12, I can Ritual summon. So goodbye to Djinn Releaser of Rituals and Cyber Angel Izana to summon the almighty Herald of Ultimateness (Def.:3000). That should slow you down, especially since you can't Special summon now due to Releaser of Rituals. So I end my turn.'

Akiza: 'I draw. I end my turn with a face-down.' 'Got you.' Akiza however, stayed completely calm, not reacting to anything, which was starting to unnerve her opponent. 'It's like duelling a statue.'

Lydia: 'I draw. I'll equip Herald of Ultimateness with Destruction Insurance.' A thick black fog then surrounded the Herald. 'Now if you destroy my monster, you lose Life points equal to half it's Attack. I end my turn.'

Akiza: 'I draw. I'll set a monster and end my turn.'

Lydia: 'My turn.' Seemingly in the ascendancy, Lydia observed her options. "I need to start burning her points away. But then again, I also need Fairies to protect myself. I'll just play it safe for now." She then passed on her turn.

Akiza: 'I draw. I'll flip Aroma Jar face-up (Atk:500). And with that I end my turn.' The Aroma Jar then gave off a pungent scent. 'During the End phase of every turn, Aroma Jar gives me 500 Life points (Akiza LP:9800-10300). And now the effect of Dried Winds activates, to destroy your Herald of Ultimateness.'

'I'll activate my face-down Safe Zone. This will protect Herald.' 'Not if I use the effect of Aromaseraphy Rosemary. Because I gained Life points, one card on your field is disabled for the turn. I choose Safe Zone.' As the machinery from Safe Zone started attaching to the Herald, but Rosemary flew over spreading spores which caused the mechanical armour to retreat back, allowing the mighty Herald to be overcome by the suffocating gusts.

Akiza then limbered up slightly, but her voice was still at a low octave. 'Aromaseraphy Rosemary, attack directly.' Rosemary flew into the air on her pretty wings, and lifted her staff, causing thousands of green needle-like leaves to fall from the sky and hit Lydia directly, some of which slashed her across the face, opening her up just below the right eye (Lydia LP:7700-5200). 'Aroma Jar, attack.' The innocuous-looking jar released a combination of fragrances which nearly made the Mancunian choke (Lydia LP:5200-4700).'

With Lydia reeling, Akiza's face still showed no concern or emotion. 'I'll end my turn and reap my rewards (Akiza LP:10300-10800).' After a couple of minutes, Lydia shook the offence off. 'You want more? That's fine by me.' 'You hate it don't you?' 'Hate what?' 'That Maddy didn't choose you. That she chose someone you didn't want in the club.' The telekinetic duellist almost reacted, but kept a tight lid on it.

Lydia: 'I draw.' As she drew, she came up with an idea to turn the duel around. 'I'll set a monster and end my turn.'

Akiza: 'I draw. I summon Copy Plant (Atk:0). Now Level 1 Copy Plant gives Level 5 Aromaseraphy Rosemary a tune-up. Smell the sweet scent of victory and revenge! Sweet pine, make enemies cry as I did before. I Synchro summon Aromaseraphy Sweet Marjoram (Atk:2200).'

Akiza then looked back at her hand, and her expression changed, as she suddenly started to develop a thunderous look on her face. 'They say revenge is a dish best served cold. I believe it's a dish best served by making those suffer like I did before! Sweet Marjoram's ability activates when she's Synchro summoned, and allows me to add Blessed Winds to my hand.'

'You've walked straight into my plan. I activate the effect of the Herald of Orange Light from my hand. By discarding it and Cupid Serve, I can negate Sweet Marjoram's ability and destroy it.' Akiza then looked at Lydia with a fierce scowl. 'You think I'm that stupid? Sweet Marjoram's presence on the field makes my Plant monsters all immune to targeting card effects.'

'Next I'll equip her with Thorn of Malice.' As this was declared, Marjoram's wings fell off and were replaced with vicious-looking thorns, boosting her strength (Atk:2200-2800). Sweet Marjoram, attack her monster.' Sweet Marjoram's thorns shot out, and slammed into Lydia's defence (Gellenduo Def.:0), before slashing her arm, causing visible damage to the bodysuit (Lydia LP:4700-4500).'

As Gellenduo faded away due to it's effect, Akiza took note of what Lydia was wearing. 'I see, you knew what danger you were in. Well it turns out you didn't.' 'Why not?' 'Because it doesn't stop me doing exactly what I want to you. Once I'm done, there will be nothing left of you. Aroma Jar, attack directly.' The Jar released more pheromone, as Lydia struggled to get her breath (Lydia LP;4500-4000).

Akiza didn't smile as her opponent faded, instead staring impassively and impassionately, while Freja tried to convince Lydia to concede. Eventually though, the elder twin stood again. 'If you're going to beat me, you're going to have to do it the hard way.' 'That's fine by me. I'll be generous and end my turn (Akiza LP:10800-11300).'

Lydia: 'I… draw. I activate 5 Card Salute. This allows me to fill my hand up.' 'Nowhere is safe.' 'I activate Swords of Burning Light.' Three burning swords dropped onto Lydia's field, providing a wall of fire. 'These won't go out until my hand contains five cards or I summon a monster. I end my turn with two face-downs (Akiza LP:11300-11800).'

Akiza: 'You think that's going to stop me? I activate another Ancient Leaf. 2000 points paid (Akiza LP:11800-9800), and two cards is the payout.' When Akiza got her cards, she looked slightly irritated. 'I end my turn with a face-down (Akiza LP:9800-10300).'

Lydia: 'I draw. I activate Brain Control. This costs me 800 points (Lydia LP:4000-3200), but in exchange, I get possession of your Sweet Marjoram.' 'I don't think so. I activate Solemn Judgement. At the cost of 2000 Life points (Akiza LP:10300-8300), I can negate and destroy your card.' 'I end my turn with two face-downs (Akiza LP:8300-8800).'

Akiza: 'My turn. I activate Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy your Swords.' As the flaming swords burned out, Lydia was vulnerable once again. 'Sweet Marjoram, attack directly.' 'I'll stop you with Counter Gate. This negates your attack, and then I draw a card. If it's a monster, I can summon it.' Lydia drew her card, and simply added it to her hand. 'Even your luck has betrayed you.'

A battered-looking Lydia didn't seem so concerned though. 'It's all fine.' 'Aroma Jar, attack.' The jar's scents didn't seem to affect Lydia as much this time, despite her points going down further (Lydia LP:3200-2700). 'My turn is done.'

Lydia: 'My draw!' As she took her card, she seemed to develop semblance of a plan. 'I activate One Day of Peace. 1 card each, and I'm safe for a turn.' 'You've only bought yourself more suffering.' 'I end my turn (Akiza LP:8800-9300)'

Akiza: 'I draw. I can't damage your points, but you are a different matter. Sweet Marjoram attack!' The Aromaseraphy monster's thorns lashed Lydia, starting to break through the chest of her bodysuit. At this point, a furious Freja went to throw the towel in, only for Lydia to catch it. 'Sorry Freja, I have to.' Meanwhile, Akiza's turn had ended (Akiza LP:9300-9800).

Lydia: 'I draw. For now I'll set a monster and end my turn (Akiza LP:9800-10300).'

Akiza: 'My turn. I'll lay a face-down and attack with Sweet Marjoram.' The wicked thorns twisted around each other, before piercing straight through the monster (Condemned Witch Def.:2000), piercing straight through into Lydia, slamming her jaw (Lydia LP:2700-2000). 'Due to Thorn of Malice, you take piercing damage, but your monster isn't destroyed. Instead she loses 600 Attack and Defence (Def.:1400).'

'I activate the effect of Condemned Witch. During your Main Phase 2, I can tribute her to summon a Level 4 or below Fairy from my deck. I choose Darklord Nurse Reficule (Atk:1600).' Akiza smirked when she saw Lydia's plan. 'Oh you're so clever aren't you? But really, do you think I'm impressed? I end my turn.' As the Aroma Jar spread beautiful fragrances to Akiza, Reficule's shrieking laugh turned them sour (Akiza LP:10300-9800).

Lydia: 'I draw.' Looking again at her hand, Lydia saw one way out. ' I activate Future Battle. This allows me to place one monster from my deck on top of my deck, but I can't use it on my next turn. I end my turn with three face-downs (Akiza LP:9800-9300).' Thinking Lydia was giving up, Akiza stayed calm still. 'Guts only get you so far.'

Akiza: 'This is the end. I draw.' 'I activate my face-down Rearguard Fakeout. By banishing Spells or Traps from my field, I can banish the same amount from your field. I'll get rid of two of my face-downs, and your Thorn of Malice and Dried Winds.' Lydia's carefully-laid plan saved her from coping with Akiza's Spells and Traps, as they were dragged down by black shadows (Sweet Marjoram Atk:2200).

'A cute move but it's not going to help. Sweet Marjoram, destroy Nurse Reficule.' The Aromaseraphy monster threw poisonous spores out of her wings, destroying Reficule (Lydia LP:2000-1400). 'If you've got any breath left after this, you can give Maddy a message from me – join me or face the consequences. Now attack!'

As the attack came in, Lydia suddenly sprung back. 'Tell her yourself after I win. Because I activate the effect of my Goddess of Sweet Revenge. You must have thought there was a reason I got rid of my own cards. Well Goddess requires an empty field when you attack directly, so I can discard her and destroy your entire field.'

As Aroma Jar's scents spread, Lydia's green Goddess came to protect her, creating an earthquake which swallowed Akiza's cards up. 'And now I can Special summon any monster I like from my deck. I summon Arcana Force XXI: The World (Atk:3100).' 'I end my turn with a face-down. So what if I lose a few points, it's not like I haven't suffered already.'

Lydia: 'I draw!' At this point, the elder Shapesister started to bleed from the mouth as a result of the repeated shots from Akiza. 'I activate Pot of Duality. In exchange for not Special summoning this turn, I can look at the top 3 cards of my deck, and place one of them on the top of my deck. Arcana Force XXI, attack Akiza directly with Light Catastrophe.' The World's lights all lit up, firing concentrated beams at Akiza like lasers from a sci-fi ship. Akiza didn't flinch at the fierce attack however (Akiza LP:9300-6200). 'I end my turn. Next turn you're done.'

Akiza: 'It's a pity you won't get a next turn then. I draw. I summon White Rose Dragon (Atk:1200). When she's summoned, I can summon Red Rose Dragon from my graveyard (Atk:1000). Now Level 3 Red Rose Dragon gives Level 4 White Rose Dragon a tune-up.' As the monsters combined, a wicked wind blew, ripping around the university.

'A blue flame envelops the world, and within it's blinding light a black flower blooms! Appear, Black Rose Dragon (Atk:2400).' 'Not something I wanted to face… like ever.' At this point, Akiza almost broke into a smile. 'When Red Rose Dragon is sent to the graveyard as Synchro material, I can summon Blue Rose Dragon (Atk:1600).'

'But she's only staying long enough for Black Rose Dragon to destroy everything on the field. Go Black Rose Gale!' Akiza's most treasured monster whipped up a devastating gale which ripped everything on the entire field to shreds. 'When Blue Rose Dragon is destroyed and sent to my graveyard, I can revive a certain monster from my graveyard. Be reborn Black Rose Dragon (Atk:2400).'

Lydia right where she wanted, Akiza simply said 'This is goodbye. Black Rose Dragon, attack directly with Rose Retaliation!' As the thorns came whipping in, Freja stood in front of her sister. 'What are you doing?' 'Saving your butt.' The thorns shot in, and went straight through both girls, knocking them out (Lydia LP:1400-0).

As the injured twins were taken backstage, MGA just happened to pass them. 'Well you shouldn't annoy Akiza it appears. Or myself.' Hannah immediately grabbed him by the throat. 'You have blood on your hands. You know that? I used to think you had just a scrap of decency. Turns out I was wrong about more things than I thought.'

Blair then stepped up. 'Give me Akiza. I can beat her no problem.' Michael then smiled. 'You can't. I've suspended you for 6 months.' 'For what?' He just smiled with Hannah's hand firmly around his throat still. 'Foul and abusive language against a member of the board., being me. The maximum punishment allowed. I will not let you control this company.'

Maltby then walked over, seeing the carnage. 'Hannah, let go of him.' 'Why?' 'Because I am in charge.' She released her grip, confused. 'How?' 'Michael has been suspended by the board. Now I can offer one of you a duel against Akiza, but as Blair is suspended pending an investigation, she is ineligible.'

After looking between themselves for a minute, Maddy stepped up. 'I'm not afraid. I'll take her on.' Just as she said that, Freja got up, clearly in pain. 'I'll take her. You don't hurt my sister and get away with it.' Maddy took a moment, and decided to cut a deal, clearly being cautious. 'Fine. But I'll be there.' 'I thought you said' 'Fuck what I said earlier, I should have been there. We've got a few days to work out how to restrict her power. But next time I'll be there. Now you all get going, I want to talk to Geoff myself.'

As they did, he leant on a wall. 'So what is it you wanted?' 'I want you to book me in a duel with Akiza.' Intrigued, Maltby dug further. 'And why are you going against your own friend's demands?' 'Because she can't take it. I dug this hole, and I'm the one who should dig us out again. They all look up to me, I need to show them that I deserve that respect.'

Not lost for words, Geoff responded. 'I'm sorry but I can't let you do that.' 'You're just like the rest aren't you – some suit who's only interested in what's "best for business".' 'Trust me, it's nothing to do with that nonsense. Because you and Akiza is real good for business.'

'Well why then?' 'You weren't looking in Freja's eyes like I was. She needs to do this herself. It's nothing to do with business, it's all personal. And I totally get you're trying to protect her. But you don't owe friends nothing kiddo. Other than maybe some trust. So what do you say that we lock Freja and Akiza in for the Nordic Championships 7 days from now?' Reluctantly, Maddy nodded her head. 'Fine. But I'm there.' 'Stay out of the zone and you'll be allowed. As soon as Akiza and Freja are out there, the gates are shut.'

Maddy then turned to leave, only to double back shortly afterwards. 'One more thing.' 'You're tenacious, I'll give you that. Like a little terrier you.' 'I want the club to get another shot at Rhydian after what happened last time.' Maltby smiled at her upfront nature. 'I think I'm going to like you.'

The leader of the revolution wasn't smiling though, as she briefly took off her cream-coloured beanie before putting it back over her ponytail. 'I didn't come to flirt.' 'I'll tell you what I'll do then. In Glasgow, I'm going to arrange a Renegade Rumble. You and four other members of the club go into a gauntlet, winner gets a shot at Rhydian at the Baltic Super 8s in Rostock.' 'Deal.' 'But we need to know by the end of play in Helsinki who's in it to win it. Now I have things to do.' 'Yeah, me as well.'

Back with the club

As Saeed and Kieran made their way through, Jaden was preparing for his next duel, with Blair by his side. 'This is your opportunity to make your mark Jaden. Crush Nash, and everyone will respect your power.' 'I'm glad I came. You were right all along.' Blair blushed slightly at this thought.

'You should learn how to take a compliment. You didn't used to be this introverted.' 'Yeah, well I guess I am now.' 'You've always got me and Rio to talk to. She adores you and I've known you longer than almost anybody else.' 'Thanks.' Just then, Sakura came up to Blair.

'I've got some good news for you Blair.' 'Huh, what?' 'I've just received my latest test results on your arm, and it appears that the infection has receded somewhat.' 'And that means what for me exactly?' 'At this rate, you'll be able to return to duelling after the mid-season break.' This almost drew a smile out of Blair, who was still preoccupied with her upcoming trip to Michigan. 'Thank you.'

In the duelling zone

As Nash waited, Jaden emerged with Blair and with new music all of a sudden (Superhuman by Kromestatik). As he walked down, Kalin finally got to analyse him. "Jaden Yuki has always been right at the top of the tree, and now he's even more dangerous with the Renegades removing his shackles. His new Dark Side of the Hero deck hasn't been seen much but is already putting the fear into all opponents."

Kalmar Katastrophe Quarter-Final: Nash LP:4000 vs. Jaden Yuki LP:4000

Turn 1: Jaden: 'I'll start. I activate the Field spell Supreme King's Castle.' While the castle rose from the ground, Nash was completely unfazed. 'I'm not scared by a castle.' 'You should be. Especially when it lets me use Polymerisation to fuse together my Avian and Burstinatrix to Fusion summon Evil Hero Inferno Wing (Atk:2100). I end my turn with a face-down.'

Nash: 'I draw. I summon Wind-up Shark (Atk:1500). And when I summon one, another one brings itself out (Atk:1500). Now I summon Silent Angler because I control a Water monster (Atk:800). I overlay my three Level 4 monsters to build the overlay network and Xyz summon Number 32 – Shark Drake (Atk:2800).'

'Shark Drake, attack Inferno Wing with Deep-Sea Destruction!' 'I activate the effect of Supreme King's Castle. By sending an Evil Hero from my deck to the graveyard, Inferno Wing gains 200 Attack for each level star that monster has. I'll send Evil Hero Malicious Edge, who is a Level 7.'

The Castle's lava moat started to bubble and overflow, boosting Inferno Wing's attack power (Atk:2100-3500), allowing her to turn Shark Drake into steam (Nash LP:4000-3300). 'And when Inferno Wing destroys a monster in battle, you lose Life points equal to Shark Drake's Attack.' Jaden's evil fusion monster appeared right in front of Nash, blasting him with bright and hot fire, dealing a near-killer blow as he covered his eyes in desperation (Nash LP:3300-500). 'I'll have to end my turn with a face-down (Atk:3500-2100).'

Jaden: 'I draw. Inferno Wing, attack him directly.' 'I activate my face-down Bubble Bringer. This prevents all Level 4 or above monsters you control from attacking me directly. So Inferno Wing is useless to you now.' 'Unable to attack maybe, but not useless. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Nash: 'I draw. I summon Big Jaws (Atk:1800). Next I summon Shark Stickers through it's effect (Atk:200). I overlay my two Level 3 monsters to build the overlay network, and Xyz summon Number 71 – Rebarian Shark (Def.:2000).' Jaden scoffed at his foe. 'No amount of hiding behind flimsy defences will stop me.'

'Who said I've only got defence? I activate the ability of Rebarian Shark. Because it has Xyz Materials, I can revive a Number from my graveyard and give it one of Rebarian Shark's Xyz materials. Return Number 32, Shark Drake (Atk:2800).' 'It's useless due to my Castle.' 'Well I'll have to dismantle your castle then with Mystical Space Typhoon.'

The stormy wind raged, and Jaden's menacing castle crumbled into dirt. 'Now I'll use the effect of Bubble Bringer. By sending it to my graveyard I can revive Shark Stickers and Big Jaws (Atk:200, 1800). That's so I can overlay them and summon out Number 17 – Leviathan Dragon (Atk:2000).'

'Well aren't you clever?' 'By using Leviathan Dragon's ability, he can gain 500 Attack points permanently (Atk:2000-2500). Shark Drake, attack Evil Hero Inferno Wing with Deep-Sea Destruction!' Jaden grinned as Shark Drake ripped apart Inferno Wing with serrated teeth and a powerful jaw (Jaden LP:4000-3300).

'That's the last mistake you're going to make here.' 'What mistake?' Jaden then revealed his master-plan. 'The mistake of destroying Inferno Wing. It means I can trigger my Trap card. It's called Change of Hero – Reflector Ray. When you destroy a Hero Fusion monster in battle, I can deal you with damage equal to it's Level x 300. That's 1800 damage you're taking straight to the face. '

Inferno Wing's spirit rose once again, and shot out a burning hot jet of flame which ended the duel with a quick win for the newly-minter Renegade (Nash LP:500-0).

With his win, Jaden's job was done and he turned around before leaving. As he got backstage, he was immediately charged by Kenta, with security quickly splitting them up and Maltby walking out to lay down the law on them both.

'I don't know why you boys feel like you have to go the extra mile when you already faced each other once. But I am nothing if not a problem solver. So I understand that you both entered the Nordic Championships. Therefore, I'm announcing now that you will be against each other in Round 1 in Helsinki. And it's going to be full on Matchplay. But if either of you lay a finger on each other, that person will be suspended indefinitely. Do I make myself clear?'

An infuriated Kenta pushed Maltby, leading to the Oracle pushing him back. 'You push me I'll push you harder. When I say anybody I mean anybody. And the next time you touch me, you're going to be permanently barred from the WDC.' Kenta stormed off, as Blair made sure Jaden behaved.

Away from all the noise, Blair came up with a devious plan to get revenge on Kenta. So she phoned the boss to get the equipment. 'Hey Maddy. Weird question – have we got any of those little ketchup sachets? The ones you get at cafes. Awesome. I kinda need a few, it's to catch Kenta out. I'll send Jaden back. Thanks.'

While Jaden was gone, Blair leant in front of the window, staring at the world going by. As she did, she felt something in her pocket, a crucifix. 'I'm starting to wonder if you do care. I know it's the right thing to do returning, but I'm just so scared. Because I'm hated. By almost everyone there. They hate what I do and who I am, every bit of who I am. Whoever heard of a bisexual catholic anyway?' While she was talking to herself, Phil watched on silently.

Five minutes later

Jaden came back with the required sauce, finding Blair still staring out the window. 'Wake up sleepyhead.' 'That only worked with Lexi.' Jaden then joined her. 'So, what you looking at?' 'Nothing in particular.' 'Is nothing in particular interesting then?' 'Guess so.' Unconvinced, Jaden recanted a recent conversation with Maddy.

'Been speaking to pres.' 'With the greatest of respect, I'm not entirely sure I care.' 'I think you will when you find out she's let me go back to Michigan with you.' This shocked the 20 year old. 'Really?' 'I asked her and she had no issues with it at all.' 'Thanks. I guess I could do with the support.' 'That's why I brought a family member you do speak to.'

As he said that, Phil walked by and stood on her other side. 'Fancy talking? I don't mind what about.' 'I just… I dunno.' 'Don't know what?' 'Anything really. I'm just so confused about everything. I can't help the way I feel, I didn't ask for it. But it feels like I'm living in a world where I'm being punished for it.'

'You want some advice? I don't know anything about being bisexual but I know a bit about being marginalised.' 'Sure, anything.' 'Stop apologising.' 'That it? That's your advice?' Phil just laughed. 'Yep. Start living for yourself.' 'Even when everyone hates me?' 'The people who hate you know will likely hate you whatever you do. So you might as well have some fun with it.'

Shortly afterwards, Blair notice Kenta coming. 'Right, my plan to get at Kenta is framing him.' 'I like the sounds of this. I might just stay.' 'Phil, is there any chance of you distracting him for a minute?' 'Sure.' Her cousin then moved off to play decoy.

Kenta walked through a couple of minutes later, only to see Jaden stood around looking out of the window. Resisting the temptation to do anything, he then had Blair shout at him. 'Over here dumbass. What was that out there earlier? That wasn't duelling. That was hopeless.' The Kyoto native stared at her for a moment, before walking off, with Jaden then collapsing to the ground, face covered in "blood", as Geoff passed by.

'What in the name of all that's holy happened here?' 'Kenta happened. Just check the CCTV.' 'Yeah, I'll need a statement from you both as well. Is he going to be ok?' 'Yeah, Sak's coming to check him in a minute. We don't want to move him immediately obviously.' 'Yeah I get that.'

In the duelling zone

Rio was alone in the duelling zone waiting for her and Phil's opponents to arrive. However they never did. When the count got to 25, the duel was ruled as a forfeit, as Phil finally arrived. Cameras then panned backstage, where Claude and Hassleberry were both tied up, unable to move.

The camera then moved more, and stood there was Jana, now rocking short-cut burgundy hair and a red blouse as well as a brown leather jacket. She just looked back, and giggled. 'Mess with one of us, mess with all of us. Nice try boys.' Meanwhile, Phil and Rio looked on completely bemused by this latest development. As they left, Phil looked down the camera and simply said 'Don't ask me.'

Jana was just about to teleport out again with Primal Eolas when Maddy caught up with her. 'And where are you going?' 'Home.' 'I've got a question first – 9 days.' 'Not really a question is it? Have you been watching that comedy thing with the Irish guy again? Where he tells them the answer.'

'I've been trying to contact you for 9 days. What happened to your phone and your email addresses?' 'I told you before, I don't use my phone much.' 'Emails?' 'Well spyware locked me out of one of them by changing the password, and I let Matei use the other one.' 'Who the fuck's Matei?'

Jana laughed at the language. 'I told you, he's a wolfblood I met working for Segolia, before we found out what they were up to. He's not long emigrated from Macedonia, so I leant him an email account. Just until he gets set up in the country.' She then grabbed Maddy's hand and wrote on it in felt-tip.

'What's that?' 'Email. My new one. I went round to the base but you weren't there so I found out your schedule – it was on the fridge.' 'How did you even… oh that's right, I gave you a key card so you could avoid being kidnapped again.' 'Seriously? I thought we agreed to stop talking about that.' 'Sorry, came up in conversation.'

At this moment the conversation was swiftly interrupted as Rio stormed in being chased by her tag partner, and immediately pushed Jana, who pushed back. 'What the hell? We had that under control and then you had to stick your nose in.' 'I thought you might need some help, what with being on crutches most of the time still.'

'What – so you think I'm incapable? That I can't look after myself? I thought going through all this might actually show people I don't need babysitting and I am not in my brother's shadow. But I don't get to prove that if people like you get in my business all the time.' Phil then pulled her away.

'I think what Rio was trying to say is' 'I don't need you speaking for me.' 'Rio, calm down.' 'Why? I'm not some puppet.' 'Anyone who doesn't get that isn't worth it.' 'Well I don't exactly get the choice do I? I'm not spending any more time in anybody's shadow. I am not the weak link!'

As Rio stormed off, Jana looked shocked as Phil tried to cover up the incident. 'I'm really sorry about Rio's behaviour. She's been in a fowl mood since her brother referred to her as "nearly as good as him" earlier. She's got an insatiable desire to prove everyone wrong.' The Welsh woman's response was surprisingly relaxed.

'Hey, I totally get it. He's a total jerk and she wants to be free of him. I know the story.' 'Well you know it wasn't personal then.' 'Yeah no problem. Listen, if she tries to apologise, tell her not to. I've been there.' 'Thanks Jana. I'm going to find Rio – she might listen to me.'

While he went off, Maddy and Jana spoke a little more. 'It's nice to have you back Jana.' 'I'm sorry.' 'You don't need to apologise, I got you into this mess. Any idea what happened?' 'None at all. Last I remember I was turning off Cardiff high street.' 'I remember you texted me when you got home that day, and you said there was a suspicious-looking van outside. Then you rang me but it went off before I could answer, and it went to voicemail when I tried to ring again. Figured it was out of battery.'

Still slightly shaken, the Welsh wolf suddenly remembered something, and got her phone out, before showing Maddy a picture on it. 'Aww he's cute. Is it a he?' 'Certainly is. It's a Rhino Iguana.' 'Really want a lizard myself. What's his name?' Jana then smiled. 'You tell me.'

'I told you Jana, write these things on yer hand.' She then laughed. 'You're way slow on the uptake Maddy!' 'Slow with what exactly?' 'You know, it's like playing chess with a gorilla this.' 'Just come out and tell me Jana!' She then smiled once again. 'Take another look.' As Maddy looked at the photo once again, it was revealed. 'So what are you going to name him?'

Shocked, she looked around. 'I kind of forgot your birthday, so call this your late present. I may or may not have worked with Dan and Emma for this though.' 'What – they put you up to this?' She then smiled. 'No silly! No, the idea was just mine. I just needed some money from them, I'm still unemployed.'

Maddy smiled. 'Thank you.' 'He'll be arriving next Monday. Gives you time to get his food sorted out, and where he's going to live, he's got his own case but it'll need replacing before too long because they grow quick, they eat mainly vegetables' 'Thanks Jana, I know.' 'Just trying to help.' 'I know.'

In the duelling zone

Rio and Radley were facing off, while Phil taunted Kari by holding up his tag title belt. 'So you think you're a big shot now just because you took advantage do you?' Rio didn't respond. This irritated Radley greatly, so the muscle-headed Californian activated his new orange and black duel disk. 'Maybe this will get you to realise you don't belong here.' Rio smiled, and then sadistically said 'Prepare for your punishment!'

Kalmar Katastrophe Quarter-Final: Rio Kastle LP:4000 vs. Radley LP:4000

Turn 1: Rio: 'I'll start. I draw. I activate the Dark Room of Nightmare spell.' As a dense black fog surrounded the competitors, Phil shouted encouragement to his charge. 'Good start!' 'Now all effect damage you take is increased by 300 points. Which is bad news when I activate Meteor of Destruction. Because you committed the crime of having at least 3000 Life points, you lose 1000 of them.'

Radley's early confidence was quickly shattered when a flaming ball of rock bombed his field, causing an early deficit (Radley LP:4000-2700). 'Next I activate another burning card – Tremendous Fire. It might cause me to lose 500 Life points, but it's worth it when you lose twice that.'

A burning wash of flames enveloped the fog, causing thick smoke which enveloped the competitors (Rio LP:4000-3500, Radley LP:2700-1400). 'Now I activate another Spell card – Mass Driver. And I'll activate Stray Lambs to get two Lamb Tokens (Atk:0)x2. Now for Mass Driver. When I tribute a monster, Mass Driver deals 400 damage. So I'll tribute both of them. And don't forget about Dark Room of Nightmare. It increases the damage for each Token.'

Radley could only watch on in disbelief as he had two lambs fired at him from a cannon, which with them under the influence of the Dark Room of Nightmare, lead to a very early exit (Radley LP:1400-0).'

After the FTK, Rio raised her fist in victory while Radley demanded a rematch from the official. No offer was forthcoming however, and with Rio having long since left, he eventually did the same, being pushed away by Kari.

Backstage

As Rio returned, Maddy was waiting. 'Great job.' 'Thanks.' 'I'll nick your ideas maybe one day. Just wanted to mention, did you get clued in on Blair getting Kenta suspended?' 'Yeah.' 'Well the thing is, we're claiming Jaden's been concussed, to make sure of the suspension. So he kind of can't duel you in the semis.'

A disappointed Rio nodded. 'I understand. Nothing is more important than the Renegades.' 'Thanks for understanding.' As Maddy went to leave, Rio stopped her. 'I just want you to know that you're 10x the president I could ever have been.' Maddy smiled at that thought. 'It's nice of you to say that. Good luck in the final then.'

Birchall was furious at the repeated failures to get rid of his nemeses. 'Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! You're all stupid! How can you not get rid of them?' Marshall responded. 'It's that Maddy – she's everywhere, and she's way too strong.' 'Strong? There's four of you! Just beat her and bring her to me, I'll do the rest.'

'Yeah, we tried.' 'And?' Marshall just pointed at Da Brooks Kid, who lifted up his baggy green shirt to reveal bruises all over his body, and taped up ribs. 'That was for trying to sneak attack her. She's an absolute animal. As for her pa, I'm going nowhere near him.' 'What – you're letting yourself be scared by that scum?'

At this juncture Birchall heard a familiar, greatly-irritating laugh. He looked around and Vector was leant against the wall, grinning. 'What's so funny?' 'You're so concerned about someone who is irrelevant.' 'And you have a better idea?' He laughed again. 'Leave the wicked one to me. I'm in his head. And that's all we need. And if you want his dog, you get her. I hear nurses love their most… needy patients.'

In the war room

Rio was busy watching Kieran defeat Typhus in the semi-final with Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei. But she seemed to be growing in confidence again as Phil approached her. 'What you thinking?' 'Play my own game. He's strong but I'm smart. And I've seen no effect protection.'

'A couple of big wins.' 'This one had him on the ropes.' 'Just wasn't dealing enough damage.' 'Nope. Pretty good though.' 'You still want me there with you?' Rio looked at him, astonished at the thought. 'Always.' 'It's a pleasure to hear it. I don't want to cramp your style, that's all.' 'Would you ever?'

Elsewhere

Akiza was stood at a screen, unblinkingly talking to someone. Lukas and Tee were stood with her, both clearly deep in hypnotic trances, as Tee's ponytail fluttered in the breeze. 'I have sent you another soldier, to join your earlier attempts. His name is Jesse, and he relates to one of them. I trust this will be enough.' 'The evil one will be obtained. And once they are, our plan may commence. Once I have cleared all obsticles, then they will be sacrificed to you my lord.' 'I want them bloodbound.' 'Your wish will be my command.'

In the duelling zone

Rio and Kieran faced off, with the height difference of 1ft 8in really showing. 'Go away little girl, I thought I was facing an adult.' 'Very funny.' 'You're only here because of that stupid Jap.' 'Not my problem. I came to d… d… duel, not to talk.' 'You can barely do that, never mind duel. This will be like taking sweets from a baby.'

Kalmar Katastrophe Final: Rio Kastle LP:4000 vs. Kieran Byrne LP:4000

Turn 1: Kieran: 'I'll start. I draw. Because I have no Spells or Traps in my graveyard, I can summon Superheavy Samurai Trumpeter straight from my hand (Atk:300).' As the Trumpeter blissfully tooted away, Rio moaned. 'What a noise.' 'Now he's being tributed for Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei (Atk:1000). And because I have no Spells or Traps in my graveyard, Trumpter revives himself (Atk:300). Now I tune Level 2 Trumpeter to Level 8 Big Benkei and summon Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo (Def.:3800). I end my turn.'

Rio: 'I draw! I'll set a monster and end my turn with three face-downs.'

Kieran: 'My turn. Susanowo can attack while defending. Take her monster to the breaker's yard.' Susanowo came steaming in, slicing through Rio's monster (Aurora Wing Def.:1600). 'When Aurora Wing is destroyed in battle, she bounces straight back (Atk:1200).' 'I end my turn.'

Rio: 'I draw. I activate my face-down Meteor Flare. By discarding two cards, I can deal you 2000 damage.' As Rio discarded her cards, a vicious firestorm roared across the battlefield, slamming full force into Kieran and making the big man flinch (Kieran LP:4000-2000). And I'll activate another card – Magic Economy. This allows me to draw a card, but only if I first banish one from my graveyard. I choose Meteor Flare.'

As he saw Rio banish the powerful trap, he just grunted. 'I'll activate The Dark Door. So now, you can only attack once per turn. I end my turn.'

Kieran: 'I draw. This is easier than I expected. I equip the monster Superheavy Samurai Soulshield Wall to Susanowo, giving it 1200 more Defence (Def.:3800-5000). Attack Aurora Wing.' Moving deceptively fast for a large monster, the Superheavy Samurai cut through Aurora Wing, but Rio was surrounded by a clear barrier as Susanowo moved out of the way (Rio LP:4000).

'I activates Spirit Barrier. While I control a monster, I take no Battle damage. And when Aurora Wing is destroyed, she comes straight back. Getting cold yet?' 'I end my turn. You'll be bored before I am.'

Rio: 'Not likely. I summon Blizzard Falcon (Atk:1500), and end my turn with a face-down.'

Kieran: 'Humph. Susanowo, destroy Blizzard Falcon.' As the ice-cold bird got bisected, Rio sprung her Trap. 'I activate Powerful Rebirth. Did you think I left Falcon there mindlessly? This revives her with an extra Level and 100 Attack and Defence (Level:5, Atk:1500-1600). Blizzard Mirage.' The effect of Falcon triggered, slamming it's icy wings into Kieran (Kieran LP:2000-500). 'I end my turn.'

Rio: 'I draw. I'll just pass on this turn.' As she did, Phil continued to provide verbal support. 'Keep it going, keep it going, play your own game.' 'Got it.'

Kieran: 'Draw. I summon Superheavy Samurai Soulclaw (Atk:500). Next I'll activate De-Synchro to get rid of Susanowo and replace it with it's materials (Big Benkei Atk:1000, Trumpeter Atk:300). Now I'll tune Level 2 Trumpeter to Level 2 Soulclaw and Level 8 Big Benkei and Synchro summon Superheavy Samurai Steam Train King (Def.:4800).'

'Steam Train King, activate your ability. I discard two cards to destroy two of your cards. I choose that pesky Aurora Wing and Spirit Barrier.' 'I was waiting for you to do that.' Kieran looked stunned. 'I did my homework on you. And I'm going to get straight A's – I activate Lost Wind.'

A chilling wind blew across the field, and Steam Train King stopped smoking from the top of it's funnel, while bits of it iced up. 'This negates the effects of one Special-summoned monster on your field, halving it's Attack. I choose Steam Train King (Atk:2000-1000). 'Well I'll just have to destroy Blizzard Falcon then. Attack!' The train threw sparks from it's wheels and a track opened up in front of it, leaving the steaming monster to plough through it's foe, as Rio's facial reaction barely moved. 'I end my turn.'

Rio: 'I draw! And this duel is mine. I summon Blizzard Dragon (Atk:1800). He's not staying though, because I overlay Blizzard Dragon and Aurora Wing to summon Evigishki Merrowgeist (Atk:2100). And now, I activate Rank-up Magic Astral Force! This allows me to rebuild the overlay network with Merrowgeist, but summon a monster two Ranks higher, as long as it's the same type. Revenge against the world is a dish best served ice-col, and I'm about to leave you exposed! There's snow way out against Number 21: Frozen Lady Justice (Atk:500).'

'500 Attack? All that for 500 Attack.' 'Frozen Lady Justice gains 1000 Attack for each Xyz material she has. I count three (Atk:3500). And by detaching a material (Atk:3500-2500), I can destroy all monsters you control in Defence mode. Elimination of Sin!' Frozen Lady Justice rose into the air on an up-draft, and her blade glowed blue, before being fired into Steam Train King, causing it to explode violently. 'Attack directly with Ice Blade.' Kieran could only watch as a solid frozen sword swung towards him, defeating him with surprising ease (Kieran LP:500-0).

As the dust cleared, Rio raised her fist in victory, as Phil celebrated with her. Quickly, an interviewer came out to speak to her, only for Phil to be nominated to take over the interview again.

'We told everyone that Rio would be back. And she isn't just back, she's better than ever before.' 'I was going to say what an incredible and patient performance that was.' 'I told her before the duel to just stick to her own game. Because her game is better than any strategy I could give her.' ' It must be asked however, what kind of physical shape is Rio in?' He smiled, and simply replied 'Good enough.'

'Now with this win, Rio has qualified for the Super 8s.' Rio then walked over, and spoke herself. 'The first part of the prophecy has come true.' He then took over for her again, as she willingly withdrew to talk to someone in the crowd. 'Rio is going to win the Baltic Championships. And there's nothing that anybody can do about it.'

Rio was then presented with an opulent, pyramid-shaped trophy in the colours of the Swedish flag, the tip being a golden yellow. 'Ladies and Gentlemen, your winner, taking home the Katastrophe Kup and 300,000kr, Cold-Blooded Rio Kastle.'
