Renegades: A New Dawn

Chapter XXXIII: Diamond Skies

When Phil and Sean walked into the hospital that afternoon, they were surprised to see Blair up and about, using a vending machine. 'Did the operation not go ahead then?' She looked over, surprised. 'Yeah it did.' 'How did it go?' 'They think well. I wouldn't know, I was unconscious for most of it.'

'Is Maddy awake?' 'Not yet, but she seems more comfortable now. The surgical scar's massive though.' 'How about yours?' 'Not so bad I don't think. Couldn't quite see it in the mirror though.' 'When did you wake up anyway?' 'Couple of hours ago. Feel a little weird but that's probably the anaesthetic. I'm going to head back to the base in a little bit, just as soon as she wakes up.'

Phil then patted her on the back. 'I'll drive you back there. Sean, if she wakes up, ring Blair.' 'Your phone out of charge again?' 'No, I'm borrowing Hannah's, mine's gone AWOL. And hers isn't connected to the hands-free. Anyway, I'll be back here in about 40 minutes.' Phil then went to leave, but Blair still had business to attend to.

'Hey Sean.' 'Is this the first time you've ever spoken to me?' 'No, it's the first time today.' 'Very funny. What is it you want then?' Trying to be more confident, Blair abruptly came out with it. 'Is there any vacancies at the garage?' 'What - Maniac Motors?'

'Yeah. You know, for a mechanic?' 'I'll have to ask Reece, I ain't been there in weeks. Why, you know someone looking for a job?' 'Yeah, me.' 'You worked as one before?' 'No, but I'm doing work on his car all the time.' Sean then turned to his eternal friend. 'That why your steering's shot?'

'I told you Sean, the steering rod got damaged when I had to drop the car in a ditch months ago and the rough Welsh roads finished it off.' 'So, she any good?' 'Well, I wouldn't mind her not tuning my engine quite so much. Costs me a fortune in petrol and it's given me one too many close shaves with a very large tree near the base.'

Still doubtful, Sean took an easy way out. 'You'll have to ask Reece. You want his number?' Phil had his own plans however. 'I'll deal with it. I'm pretty sure Reece still owes me £800 for that Meccano Spitfire. I'm sure I can waive the fee for a favour. He probably owes me one anyway. Because I'm everyone's problem solver.'

'You mean your wife is everyone's problem solver, because she can actually talk to people.' 'Small details.' 'I don't know, seems like a pretty big detail to me.' Before this escalated, Blair ushered her cousin away, and towards his Aston Martin. As she saw it, she seemed excited.

'Nice, travelling in luxury.' 'Yeah, my Impreza's in for repairs to the steering rack. I've also got it booked in for a new engine while it's there.' 'What's wrong with the current one?' 'Nothing, but I'm getting a brand new V6 Hybrid. It runs on electric until the battery's out, and then a petrol generator takes over while the engine's recharging.'

'That sounds a little too good to be true.' 'Not really. The only real catch is that when it's on the generator power, I can't go past 80mph.' Blair got excited at this. 'Does it explode if you do?' 'I'm never letting you watch Speed again. And eventually, yes. It makes the generator overheat, and there's a cut-off where the battery stops charging. Impressed?'

He then looked round, and Blair had fallen asleep in her seat. 'Not surprised - it's been a stressful time for you. I'm going to get you back to the base so you can sleep it off somewhere more comfortable.' After a comfortable 40 minute drive, he arrived back at the base, just as Blair woke up.

'Did I fall asleep? I'm sorry' 'Don't apologise. I understand. How early were you given the wake-up call?' 'I was awake from about half 3. I was' 'Nervous?' 'Something a bit like that.' Well you're back at the base now. I suggest you excuse yourself for the day and get some rest. Just take it easy.'

As she stepped out of the car, Jade greeted her with a kiss. 'How's it going soldier?' 'So tired it's unbelievable.' 'Well I've made your bed, and Rio's making you a hot drink as we speak, so all you have to do is go to bed.' 'Cheers Jade.' As Blair walked into the base, Jade stayed behind to talk to Phil.

'So how's Maddy?' 'I don't really know, I've not been to see her yet. I just picked Blair up first. I'm heading back to the hospital now.' As Phil got into his car however, he saw a silver hand which had dropped out on the passenger seat. 'Jade, is this Blair's?' As she saw it, she blushed slightly.

'It's mine, I gave it to her as a good luck charm before the transplant.' He then handed it back to Jade, and gave a knowing glance, before driving off again. The Iranian then walked back into the base, where Blair was sat on the kitchen countertop talking to Rio.

'If you're that tired then just go to bed. I've been managing fine without you, I'm sure I can survive another day.' Jade then passed the hand to Blair without saying anything, and Rio seemed to recognise it. 'Didn't you have that when we were kids Jade?'

'Yeah, it was a gift from my father on the day I was born. It's called the Hand of Fatima, and it's meant to bring you luck when you have it on you. Also wards off evil spirits.' 'So why's Phil still here then?' The three burst out laughing as Rio came out with this comment.

In the hospital

As Phil walked back onto the ward, Maddy was sat up, reading. 'Someone looks brighter today.' 'Could hardly be worse.' 'So, how are you feeling?' 'Little better. Just hope that my body accepts it.' 'I'm sure it will.' As her attendant came walking past, Sean collared him.

'So how's she doing? I mean, will she need another surgery?' 'It's too early to say but the early signs are positive. She's on anti-rejection medicines, and according to Dr. Anderson who undertook the surgery, the donor kidney was one of the healthiest he's ever seen in an adult donor. It helps that Maddy has responded well to taking the anti-rejection drugs. Could you tell me if she's been on any medication recently?'

Phil immediately looked over at Maddy. 'It's barely a secret anymore.' 'Yes, she's been on Buspirone was it?' 'Yeah.' 'She's been on Buspirone to try and help her get over an addiction to Cannabis, but I think she stopped taking those.' 'I stopped taking them 7 weeks ago yesterday.'

'That's fine then. It's just you wouldn't be able to take them anyway due to the kidney damage. It was just a matter of checking if you were on any medication so we could make provisions. All being well we're hoping to discharge you in the next 2-3 days.' 'That'd be awesome thanks. Can't wait to get back home. How's everyone doing back at base?'

'Everything is fine Maddy, I keep telling you. Everything will still be standing when you get back.' 'Really just need to get back on my feet.' 'One step at a time.' 'But I've got the trials in 2 weeks.' 'Just focus on your recovery' 'No, I'm not letting everything slip away from me. Please Dad, understand.' 'I do. Trust me, I do understand. But my main concern is your health.'

'What's the point in having health if you can't do anything with it.' 'I understand that Maddy. I just don't want you making things worse. I know you're frustrated.' 'Yeah that's an understatement.' 'All you can do is focus on your recovery, and if it comes it comes. I want nothing more than to see you compete, and you know why?'

'Guess I don't to be fair.' 'It's because I love seeing you win. And most of all, I love seeing you happy.' 'Yeah, not sure I've really felt that much recently. All I seem to feel is anger and hatred. And I'm sick and tired of battling constantly. All I want is to lead the club my way, and not have people telling me I'm corrupted or manipulated or evil.'

Back at the base

Jade was just finishing her lunch when Rio came down, carrying her deck. 'I've got a free 20 minutes, so you fancy a practice duel in the arena?' 'Sure, but isn't that an issue with the course?' 'Not at all. Denzil's got a practice session with Blair in about 10 minutes, but if he asks, I'm giving you extra tuition.' Excited, Jade got her deck. 'I'm down for it.'

As they got in there, Denzil was already waiting. 'Hey Jade.' 'Afternoon Denzil.' 'Yo, can I ask you something?' 'Don't swing that way.' 'No, that wasn't it. And just be honest, are you and Blair… together?' 'I guess there's no reason to keep it secret after the course ends. We've been together since the back end of last year. She had no idea that I had signed up to the course when we got together.'

Rio was still suspicious. 'Wait… how did you know?' 'Saw them kissing outside. Don't worry man, I ain't going to say anything. Not like it's really much of my business anyway.' 'Thanks for not saying anything.' 'Listen man, you do what you like.' Blair then walked in, wearing sunglasses to disguise her tiredness.

'Teach looking fresh.' 'Would be nice if I felt it.' Rio then put her arm around Blair. 'Listen, you go back to bed and I'll look after Denzil today.' 'No no, I'll be fine. Rio, do you know how to set up these drones?' 'Yeah, I usually do them before the sessions because Phil's always late.'

'So Rio, what format are we doing?' 'How about 1 duel, start with 8k.' 'Sounds sweet.' As the girls set up for the duel, Denzil saw how exhausted Blair was. 'Hey teach, how about we watch this duel? You're always telling me how good Rio is.' 'I guess I could take a few minutes out.' With the duel field set up, the duel began.

Arena Duel: Jade Goocheneyad LP:8000 vs. Rio Kastle LP:8000

Turn 1: Jade: 'I'll start. I summon Fortune Lady Past. All my lower Level ladies gain 200 Attack for every Level (Atk:?-200). Next I'll activate Fortune Lady Calling. Calling allows me to summon a Fortune Lady from my deck of a different name to Past. I choose Fortune Lady Earth, who gains 400 Attack per Level (Atk:0-2400). Now I'll tune my Level 1 Past to Level 6 Earth. Take me to tomorrow, Fortune Lady Every (Atk:2800).'

'I'll also equip her with Synchro Boost. That increases her Level by 1 and her Attack by 500 (Level:7-8, Atk:2800-3700). I end my turn with two face-downs. It's your turn Chi Chi.'

Rio: 'God I forgot how much I hated that nickname. I draw. To start, I'll activate Dark Room of Nightmare. Next I'll activate a Field spell - Umi. It gives all Water monsters 200 more Attack. Including Blizzard Falcon (Atk:1500-1700). You know what comes next. And don't forget Dark Room does an additional 300.'

Falcon glowed ice-blue, and soared into the sky, before diving into Jade, starting the damage (Jade LP:8000-6200). 'Next I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards. And I'll chain Book of Moon to flip Falcon face-down, and I'll add Mystical Space Typhoon as Link 3.'

'What are you up to Rio?' She was about to reveal the truth. 'Now for Chain Link 4, how about a Chain Strike? You lose 400 Life points for each Chain Link.' The chain resolved, and Jade's points got slammed by a burning chain (Jade LP:6500-4600). 'Chain Burn? Wish I'd known…'

'Element of surprise. Just like this - Fire Cracker.' 'But you run Water monsters.' 'Exactly - element of surprise. By discarding it, 1000 of your points get surprised off of your total (Jade LP:4600-3300).' Tired of the damage by this point, Jade cheekily asked 'Please sir, can I have some more?'

'Ok Oliver, how about Poison of the Old Man? This has two effects, but I think I'll just deal you 800 damage (Jade LP:3300-2200).' 'Anything else while you're at it?' 'Yeah - Trap Booster. By discarding the last card from my hand, I can flip my Blizzard Falcon face-up and deal you 500 damage for each effect monster on the field. Not to mention that Falcon's effect resets when it's flipped. Sorry Jade.' As the Falcon flipped back up, Jade got slammed with a further 3100 points of damage (Jade LP:2200-0).'

With the duel over, Rio was delighted, while Jade clearly had much to think about. So much so that she barely said a word to Rio before leaving the arena. Rio then looked round, and saw Blair halfway through a coffee. 'How about that?' 'It was great. By the way, there's an announcement on DN in about 5 minutes about the WDC Championship.'

'Why, what's going on?' 'Beats me. All I know is they've cancelled a re-run of me and Phil at last year's Worlds for it.' Denzil then looked at her. 'You must be disappointed.' 'Not really- means I don't have 40 people telling me that I was on television for the next week. Anyway, I've got the stream up on my phone.' Making the announcement was the Board of Directors' official spokesperson, Dana Clarke.

'Greetings duellists and fans, one and all. As you may have gathered from the title of this announcement, there is an update on the future of the WDC Championship. We have evidence which suggests that Rhydian Morris retained the title at In the Shadows with the assistance of bribing one of the competitors. This is considered to be against the spirit of competition.'

'As such, the board have voted by a margin of 7-1 with one abstention to strip Mr. Morris of his title. The board have also decided that the true title holder will be decided in a tournament. The participants will be decided at an Extraordinary General Meeting tomorrow.'

'This would be where our announcement ends, however we got word earlier today that Mr. Morris had been arrested in London, England. As such, we are left with little option but to suspend him until further notice. No further information is available at this time. Thank you for listening.'

As this announcement ended, Blair immediately got her phone out. 'Going to let Phil know.' 'Leave it B, he's still with Maddy. Give 'em some space eh?' Denzil looked concerned listening to this. 'What's going on with her?' 'Denzil, we can't tell you even if we wanted to. Not without her consenting.'

Meanwhile, Rio had secretly texted Maddy herself. 'Maddy says "Everyone's gonna find out eventually, just don't tell the press".' Blair shrugged, and then explained. 'Maddy had a medical emergency while on holiday, and went into full kidney failure. She had a transplant in the early hours.'

'But, she's not like… gonna die, right?' 'No, she seems to be improving.' 'Hopefully it continues right?' 'Absolutely.' 'What about her title? Is she dropping it?' 'Too early to know. She's hopefully going to be released from hospital in a couple of days. Anyway, give me a couple of minutes and I'll be with you Denzil. You staying Ri?' 'I've gotta go, I'm late back anyway.'

In the hospital

Maddy was lay reading her new book when she heard a coughing in front of her. As she put the reading material down, Jana was stood there, hand on hip. 'Why the hell did you not tell anybody that you were ill?' 'I had no idea. Like, I felt tired, I was being sick, and I had some rib pain, but I thought it was exhaustion. I'd been doing 14 hour days between college and running the club.'

'And you didn't think of stopping? Why doesn't that surprise me?' 'What do you think the holiday was for Jan - it wasn't because I was bored.' 'So, how did you scrape your way out of treatment this time?' Maddy rolled out of her bed, and showed Jana two 7-inch incisions on either side of her back.

'I didn't - both my kidneys were shot. They were hoping one might still work, but it was like a battlefield. Good job you can live on one kidney.' 'I'm still a little confused - you started with two kidneys, you lost two, but you've apparently got one.' 'Yeah, Blair gave me one.'

'I hope you thanked her.' 'Yeah, of course.' 'So, what's next?' 'Getting out of here would be a start.' 'And the trials? You can't miss your opportunity.' 'Jana, I wouldn't miss them for the world. You know that. Even if I have to totally wolf out I'll do it.' Jana then noticed Maddy's book beside her.

'Something tells me we're going to be on a shopping trip after this.' The patient looked confused initially, until she saw her friend looking at the book. 'Oh yeah that.' 'You like it?' 'Yeah, it's really cool. Taylor got it me.' 'That's sweet of her. How much was it?' 'Didn't say.' 'Why does that not surprise me? A load of people are way too generous to you at times.'

'Yeah, especially you. You never even let me buy a coffee.' 'If friends can't treat you what's the point of having them?' 'Is that just your excuse for avoiding human contact?' 'Something like that. Either that or beat 'em with a large stick.' The girls laughed, and Maddy lay down again to rest her weary body.

Back at base, the next morning

As Rio rolled out of bed, Blair was up and about, vacuuming all of the furniture while Freja watched on. 'Before you ask, she's on her 4th coffee.' 'Fre, it's not even 10am.' 'I know. She's been up like… actually I don't know, she was up before me.' 'Hang on… you were supposed to have a shoot this morning weren't you?'

'Yeah, 9:40. Only thing is, I got a call about an hour ago telling me the studio's shut for three weeks due to an outbreak of chickenpox. Like, I don't even have to worry about that shit, I got chickenpox when I was 5.' 'Yes, we all know the story of how your entire class got it other than Lydia. You've told us enough times.'

Blair then turned around. 'Hey Rio, you want a coffee?' 'Don't you think you've had enough for one morning?' 'Not really.' 'Sure?' 'Err yes. Honestly Rio, stop fussing. I'm absolutely fine.' 'If you insist. Promise me you're taking it easy for the day.' 'Sure, whatever you want.'

Just then, the recent donor received a text. 'Sakura wants to see me right now in the medical bay.' 'Why?' 'It doesn't say. Just says to get there whenever I've got a moment.' Rio shrugged at this. 'The vacuuming can wait till later. You get over there - Sakura gets really angsty if you're late.' She understood what Rio meant despite her odd wording, and hastened away.

Reaching the medical zone, Blair knocked on the imposing sliding door, which quickly shifted, belying its size. Sakura was stood there dressed all in green, reading a manga strip. 'Sorry, did someone hijack your phone?' She looked up, shocked to see Blair there, and quickly stuffed the Japanese media into a drawer, slamming it shut.

'Apologies, I wasn't expecting you so soon. How have you been feeling?' 'Better thanks.' 'I love to hear it. Would it be ok if I just took a blood sample from you?' 'Yeah, absolutely.' One prick later, and the blood was being analysed. As Sakura wiped the blood off of the bicep with an antiseptic wipe, she made small talk.

'So how did the transplant go?' 'They seemed happy with it. Maddy's getting better which is the important thing. They're hoping to release her in the next couple of days, but we'll just have to see how it goes.' 'Fingers crossed for her - it's not the same without her around here.'

'You're not kidding it'll be nice. Anyway that's enough about her, how've you been?' 'Oh you know, the usual - cleaning up scrapes, doing routine health checks, obsessively cleaning surfaces because I have nothing better to do.' 'The norm then?' 'Yep, that's it.'

The awkward small talk was then interrupted by a quick ding. 'That will be your blood results.' Sakura took the readings from the machine, and then cross-referenced them with a list she had nearby. 'That's looking pretty good I'd say. Just look at the tissue culture I took a couple of days ago.'

After looking in the petri dish, Sakura cross-referenced some more, and then quickly wrote up a report, before coming back to a nervous Blair. 'Go on, what's the news?' She immediately recognised Sakura smiling. 'Right, so your white blood cell count should be between 4000 and 11000. Last time we did this three weeks ago your count was 17822, this time it is 8560. The staphylococcus stain is far less thriving than last time, and there's no significant mark at the origin of the infection.'

'So what does that mean?' 'It means, I'm officially clearing you to duel again as of today.' 'Seriously?' She nodded. 'It's not totally gone, and I will be wanting to catch up with you every week for at least four months, but I'm really pleased with how everything is progressing, and it's at the stage where it's no longer a significant issue.'

'That's awesome, thank you so much. Will I still need to take those antibiotics?' 'Yes, I'll write another prescription for you. So it's now one every 12 hours, and we'll review that every week to see if it's necessary. How does that sound?' 'Yeah, brilliant, I'm just processing everything.'

'I understand, you weren't expecting to hear that. But it just shows how things can change in a few weeks. I'll just need you to sign here so Maddy knows when she gets back that I officially gave you the go-ahead to return.' 'Do you need to sign it as well?' 'Yeah, I'll sign after.'

'So what's all this jargon?' 'It's just medical terms to explain what I've done to determine your wellness. I don't really need to write it this way, but it's just good practice if you need to go and see another doctor about it. I'm just going to copy the form now.'

After the form was copied, Sakura tore the bottom section off of the copy, and passed it to Blair. 'This is your conformation sheet just to prove that you've been cleared. I'll keep the full copy here, and the details on your treatment will go into your records in the office. Anything goes wrong at all' 'I know, come and find you, and if we're in different countries, contact you.'

As Blair re-entered the main hall, nearly everyone was there, other than two. 'Right, where are Rio and Astrid?' 'Astrid's gone to see Maddy at the hospital, and Rio's in the office, probably moaning about having to read.' 'Cheers Kris.' She ran off, grabbed her newly-obtained tag title, and went up to the office, where she hammered on the oaken door. 'If it's about visiting Maddy, may I remind you that I am not a bouncer.' 'It's me Riana.' 'If you call me that again the next doors you see will be the gates to heaven. Also, come in.'

The girl from Shelby wandered in, and elbowed the door shut, before smiling. 'You know if the wind changes you'll be stuck like that.' 'I know, but it's a risk I'll take. I have a couple of things to show you.' Firstly, she produced the slip of paper which Sakura had given her.

'B, what is this?' 'It's my medical report from Sakura. Well, the important bit anyway.' The acting president then read over it. 'As a result of the tests done today, the 29th February, I officially declare the client Blair Flannigan to be fit to return to professional duelling immediately.'

As she finished reading, Rio gave her friend a huge hug. 'I'm so glad you've been cleared! This is awesome - we could go after the tag titles together again.' 'Well we're going to have to work a little bit harder sharpening our skills.' This comment confused her. 'What are you suggesting B?'

Blair then produced the tag title. 'Phil said that this is yours. Me and him won the North Wales Duelling tag titles while Jade was looking after Maddy the other day.' 'How did you get cleared by Sakura?' 'We didn't - it was an open challenge, so we had about 20 minutes to prepare.'

'So that's why Hannah was so insistent on sending your deck no matter how unfinished it was…' 'Yep. Gotta say, you did a good job putting it back together, considering I had, like 8 cards in it at the time.' 'Not to mention I didn't have a clue what half the cards did.'

'Hannah said you were up half the night sorting it.' 'Not quite, I actually fell asleep when I'd nearly finished it. Woke up the next morning when Sean knocked and just put stuff on it.' Blair then hugged her back. 'Thank you as well.' COnversation then quickly turned to Rio's speech.

'So how have things been with you?' 'Awful. I keep messing up words, and I don't want people to laugh at me.' 'Rio, anybody who laughs at you for that is a douche.' 'Doesn't stop them.' 'A douche will always be douchey, doesn't matter how many times people prove them wrong.'

'Just wish I could live with it. Every time I speak, it's like… they're lining up.' 'Calm down. Everyone here understands. Eventually, we will have some sort of interview. And then people will understand. Now how about you just take a couple of deep breaths, and calm down.'

'I'm fine B.' 'I can read you like a book Rio. If you're that concerned about it, talk to Phil or Sakura - they probably know more about it than me. Let me know if you need any help with the admin work by the way.' 'Of course I will.' The girls embraced once more, and split from each other.

In the hospital

Astrid was excited to be seeing Maddy again. But that wasn't the foremost subject on her mind on the walk through the hospital. 'I mean I don't get what she sees in it. You have the choice, you could do anything, and then you choose to do that? Who would do that, what madperson?' Behind her, Hannah was rolling her eyes. 'You do realise it's Maddy's choice what pet she has?'

'Who would keep one of those things?' 'You mean a lizard? Or just reptiles in general?' 'It's all of them, I don't get the obsession. And you hear the way she talks to it, like it's a real human, she speaks better to that than me.' Hannah then had a thought. 'Are you scared of them?' Astrid turned around quickly in shock. 'No!'

As she turned to the ward, the viking quickly noticed an issue. 'Can you visit somebody who isn't there?' 'What are you on about now?' Hannah then also noticed that Maddy's bed was empty. 'Can nobody keep an eye on anything here? Let's just hope that nobody's got to her, because she's not in shape to defend herself.'

The two of them then split up to look, with Hannah searching inside the hospital and Astrid the outer. As the younger searched, she shouted out. 'Maddy, if you're around, give me a sign or something.' What she wasn't expecting was an immediate reply.

'Don't worry, I've not been kidnapped.'

Astrid then race around the next corner, to find Maddy bent double, breathing heavily. As she got near her friend though, the patient set off again, growling as she launched herself away. In her condition however, there was little chance of accelerating away, and within 200 metres, she had been caught up with again.

'Slow down and let's talk.' 'I don't want to talk, I want to get stronger. I've worked too hard to miss out on the trials.' The blonde then tried to stop her again, but got pushed on her backside for the trouble. 'You're either with me or you leave me alone.' 'You're being an idiot! You can't keep doing this to yourself.'

'Yeah, I can. And I will. I have to do it.' 'No you don't. At least wait until you've been released from hospital.' 'And when's that going to be huh? I can't take the chance that they won't release me in time. I told you 'trid - you're either with me, or leave me alone.'

Astrid never got the chance to answer, as Hannah found them both. 'Before you say anything, no.' 'Maddy, we can come to an agreement.' 'Depends if it involves leaving me alone.' 'You come back in for the scan and the tests, and I'll talk them into releasing you by the end of the week. Then when you get home, we'll allow you to use the garage as a gym to get you back into some sort of shape.'

Maddy rolled her eyes, and relented. 'I'll finish this lap and then go in.' As Maddy finished her lap, she was clearly exhausted, and in some pain from her midsection. She walked back in, and nearly collapsed. After being walked back in by her friends, she was taken almost immediately for her scan.

Jade's flat, Wallsend

Jade had just cooked herself some lunch when the buzzer went off for her flat. 'Why is it always when I'm eating?' She then wandered over to the intercom, still wearing pyjamas. 'If it's Greg, the rent isn't due for two weeks yet.' 'It's Blair - can we talk?' 'Give me a moment, I'll buzz you in.'

As she got in, Blair journeyed deep into the block, through an incredibly long corridor, before reaching Flat 9, recognisable by some thick smoke coming from the door. 'Erm… is everything ok in there?' 'Yeah, give me a moment.' Three minutes later, Jade had got most of the smoke out of the windows, and opened the door.

'Hey jewel, what's bothering you?' Blair just walked into the building, and slumped onto the sofa. 'Actually before you tell me, you fancy anything to eat?' 'Sure, not eaten all day.' 'Why?' 'Had a medical meeting with Sak this morning.' 'How did it go?' 'Not bad - I've been cleared to return. I've been offered a place in the WDC title tournament, but I turned it down.'

'Why? I thought you wanted that title.' 'I guess I just don't feel ready to return. I've duelled twice in about three months. I just want to know I'm the same that I was.' 'Of course you will be.' 'I hope Rio didn't knock your confidence too much.' Jade giggled. 'You're so cute! No, I'm fine, it taught me a few things actually.'

'Like to avoid Chain Burn like the plague?' 'Something like that. Do you know what this ultimate challenge is about?' 'Beats me. To be honest, I think it's something that Hannah came up with. They're keeping it real hush hush. All I know is that I've been told not to be ill that day.'

Jade then got up again. 'So we were talking about you not bothering to eat anything this morning.' 'You got anything in?' 'Got some falafels.' 'Never heard of it.' 'Basically just chickpeas, some spices, pickled cabbage, and a dash of tabasco. Fancy some?' 'Sure, I'll try it.'

As they ate together, the subject finally turned to why Blair was there. 'So, what was it you needed to talk about?' 'I just wanted to… well… I was just wondering… well the thing is…' 'Don't be embarrassed, just tell me.' She then blurted it out. 'I was thinking of converting to Islam but I'm so scared that they don't accept bisexuals and I thought that being a lesbain you'd know, and'

She then took a moment to breathe, and Jade looked surprised. 'Erm, ok. What's brought this on? The last I knew you were a Christian.' 'I'm not… not really anyway. I've been trying to convince myself all this time that I still believe, but the truth is, I don't know what I believe anymore. And then you gave me that Hand of Fatima before the transplant.'

'So what was it you wanted to know?' 'Does Islam… you know, accept homosexuals?' 'I mean, I can't say they'd all accept it.' 'Well what does it say in the Quran?' 'Not a lot. Some people think that it says they were struck down by Allah. I think those people are just looking for an excuse to be homophobic to be fair though.'

'You think it's ok then?' 'I mean, I guess. Listen, I think you should think this through before you do anything.' 'Oh I am. I just wanted your advice first.' Jade then got her phone out, and wrote down a number, before passing it to Blair. 'If you're serious about converting, then contact this number, and ask for Allamah Jassim. He'll be able to answer all your questions. He certainly did for me a few years ago.'

'So you converted as well?' 'Not exactly, but I moved around that much when I was younger that I never got the chance to really explore my faith. I never had enough of an identity as a Muslim. And then I met Allamah Jassim - he was doing a big speech at the University of Grodno in Belarus.'

'You lived in Belarus?' 'Yeah. I moved to Russia because it wasn't safe in Iran due to the war there. And then I moved to Belarus because it was cheaper to live there.' 'I thought all those countries were totally against homosexuals.' 'I mean the governments are, but it's not like I had anyone there.'

'So you didn't tell anybody?' 'No, it's not like anybody ever asked.' 'You live there long?' 'About 18 months. Helped that I had a pretty lucrative job - I was an exotic dancer for hire.' This disgusted Blair. 'I can't believe you had to do that.' 'I was a 19 year old who didn't speak a word of the language and had no qualifications. I got paid upward of $950 per person per night. Eventually I had enough to move back to Idaho. And then five weeks later, I met you.'

'And I'm so glad you did.' 'Same.' As Blair prepared to leave, Jade stopped her for a moment. 'If you like you can come round here tomorrow evening and stay the night - I'll order us a couple of pizzas and watch some telly together.' 'Sounds awesome.' 'Oh, and tell Riana that I'd love her to come as well. Have a proper sleepover like we're freshmen all over again.'

In the hospital

As the scans came back in, the doctors analysed it and found their answers, before reporting back to Maddy, who was distinctly uninterested in seeing them again. 'Unless you're telling me when I can get outta here I ain't interested.' Hannah was sat next to her, and quickly provided the reprimand.

'Could you please at least try to be polite?' 'Sorry, just want out of here.' 'How are you feeling today Ms. Smith?' 'I'd be better if I could go home.' 'Well we're hoping you will be able to in the next couple of days. We've completed your scans, and the good news is that there seems to be no further damage in any of your organs. We did find one thing however.'

'In the course of the scan we found that you have three broken ribs, and two further cracked ribs. We believe this may be from where you fell. Do you remember anything else about what happened?' 'Memory's still hazy.' 'From witness reports, we believe that you may have fallen on the edge of a concrete step, and that is where we believe you suffered these injuries.'

'So what happens next?' 'Regarding your injuries, there isn't a great deal we can do, other than recommend that you keep taking deep breaths. They should take no more than a few weeks to heal, but we highly advise avoiding strenuous physical activity.' Maddy rolled her eyes, but Hannah replied for her. 'Ok, thank you.'

As they left, Maddy turned to her adoptive mother. 'Before you say anything Maddy, the trials is up to your judgement. I just ask that you don't go through with it unless you genuinely feel like you're ready.' 'Thank you for everything. I really mean it.' 'I know you do.'

Hannah then put her arm around her. 'You had us worried you know.' 'Really?' 'When you had your surgery. Neither of us slept a wink that night.' 'I'm sorry. I honestly didn't realise what was going on inside.' 'I know you didn't - nobody did. The important thing is how you are now.'

In the base

When Blair returned, Rio was waiting by the doors. 'Where did you get to?' 'Visiting Jade's flat. She's invited us both over tomorrow night for a sleepover. You interested?' 'Yeah, of course. As long as I'm not cramping your style that is.' Rio then start making weird kissing and licking noises down Blair's ear, freaking her out.

'You're disgusting. Get away from me before I call for a restraining order.' 'Don't be like that, I'm sure that you and her will have lots of fun. Lots and lots of fun. Lots and lots of steamy fun.' 'Are you just coming to tease us?' 'No… not much anyway. Do you know if she'll have any martinis there? I could really do with one.'

'Rio, she's a Muslim - they don't drink.' 'Seriously? That's a bummer.' 'It's not like I'll be drinking anyway.' 'Why? You love a martini.' 'I've got soccer practice the next morning.' 'I think they call it "football" here.' 'I know, but I've spent my entire life just calling it soccer. Takes time to get used to the new words.'

Blair then flopped onto the chair, and switched the television on, straight to a further announcement regarding the WDC Championship. 'Hey Ri, you might want to see this.' The interim president then sat down with her friend, as the spokeswoman from the previous day made an appearance.

'Hello, and once again I thank you for taking the time to watch this update. Firstly, for those who have not already heard the news, Rhydian Morris has been stripped of his WDC Championship for bringing the company into disrepute as a result of retaining the WDC Championship via bribery. Mr. Morris has also been suspended indefinitely as a result of legal troubles.'

'Therefore, a tournament has been devised to crown a new champion. The Egotistical Eight tournament will feature a single elimination bracket. Four of the duellists are seeded, and they will go straight into the first round. The other four will have to negotiate a qualifying round.'

'The four seeded duellists include the three who were in the controversial WDC Championship duel at In the Shadows; Rio Kastle, Kieran Byrne, and Astrid Hofferson. They will be joined as seeds by Akiza Izinski, as the highest ranked duellist who is actively competing at this time.'

'The other four duellists as explained earlier will be coming through qualification duels. These duels will be as follows: Kalin Kessler vs. Johnny McGregor, Jaden Yuki vs. Justin Pipe, Kari Tsukumo vs. Phil Robinson, and Claude Duane vs. Maddy Robinson-Cummings.'

'Now for the schedule. The qualifiers will take place at WDC World Tour: Delhi, and then the tournament proper will take place at WDC World Tour: Dublin, which will be a two day event. All details can be found on www. /tournaments/wdctitledublin. Thank you for listening to this announcement.'

While the announcement was wrapping up, Rio looked surprised. 'Why aren't you in there B? You're cleared now.' 'They contacted me asking if I'd been cleared last week, but I had no idea I'd be ok to duel. They didn't say anything about a tournament. At least you're in there Ri.'

'I know, but…' 'Don't worry about me. Listen, how about you win the tournament, and then you give me first shot? If you're that concerned about me.' 'You're right, sorry. I'm just desperate for one of us to bring the title home.' 'I'm sure you won't let us down with that.'

Meanwhile, just as Taylor was preparing to go to the hospital, there was an alert on the identification system. Seeing that it didn't recognise the card which had been swiped, she called Blair over. 'Hey Blair, you have a moment?' She rushed over, hair clipped up. 'What's up?' 'The entry system was going off, saying it didn't recognise the card.'

'Firstly, we're not allowed to call it the "entry system" anymore. Maddy's made it a rule that we have to call it the "Crucial Living Identification Tower Or Realtime Information System". You might have guessed, but she's quite keen on acronyms. And references to sexual organs. Anyway, I'll show you how the system works.'

Blair then typed in her eight digit passcode, unlocking the system. 'This is Member Number 7924.' A sassy female voice then replied. 'Welcome back.' 'What is the issue with the entry system?' 'A guest entry card not recognised by the system has attempted to scan in. Do you want the flamethrowers activating?'

'No! No, no flamethrowers. Entry camera 2 - give me visuals.' CCTV footage of the outside of the base then came up on the screen, and it took Blair almost no time at all to recognise who it was. 'I wish they would stop turning up unannounced. I literally have a phone which they could ring. Member Number 7924 - grant entry.'

Blair then swiped her card, and the guests walked in. 'Alex, can I ask you something?' 'Yeah, of course.' 'What happened to ringing me this time?' 'Sorry, I didn't think of it.' 'So what are you doing here?' 'Well I… we came over here on holiday for a few weeks. But the place we're renting isn't available for a few days yet.'

'Wait, how long are we talking? Because anything over 3 days and I'll have to ask Maddy.' 'That shouldn't be an issue should it - she's friendly and all.' 'There's a slight complication.' 'What kind of complication.' 'Err… how about the being in hospital kind of complication?'

Ally was then distracted by Blair's back. 'Auntie Blair, what's these stitches?' Alex then had a look, as did Taylor. 'What on earth have you done this time Blair? I thought you were keeping your nose clean now you were in England.' 'I've not been in any trouble Al, I promise.'

As this was going on, Ally had wandered off, which Taylor quickly noticed. 'I don't mean to intrude, but didn't you have a little human with you before?' Blair then looked around. 'The base isn't somewhere to be playing around.' She ran off, desperately trying to find her niece.

Soon though, she got a lead from Sean. 'Sean, have you see my niece Ally? She's about so high' 'Reddish hair? Black and red shirt with a spitfire on? Purple trainers?' 'Yeah.' 'Room 7.' 'Thanks Sean.' The reality soon hit her though. 'Room 7? That's… oh no, anywhere but Astrid's room.' Blair quickly rushed up to Room 7, fearful of what she may find. As she gently opened the door, she got an enormous surprise.

Ally was perched gently on Astrid's bed, while the Scandanavian continued to draw, apparently totally oblivious to the mischievous child behind her. And then, remarkably, they started to interact, revealing a new side of Astrid that nobody had ever seen before.

'What you drawing?' 'Wolf.' 'You have lots of them where you're from?' 'Yes, so many wildlife. It's a pretty magical place, wolves, stags, elks, reindeer, polar bears' 'You've seen polar bears?' 'Oh yes.' 'Do you miss home?' 'Sometimes. It can be difficult when nobody speaks your native language. But my English is just fine.'

Ally then reached out and touched Astrid's long flowing hair, which Blair cringed at. But there was very little reaction. 'What do I do to get hair like yours?' Astrid giggled slightly listening to this. 'Never cut it. I cut it about once a year. You think Blair's lazy with hers?'

She then sat up, hair down and wearing a thin brown headband. 'You know, my mor once told me "Astrid kjære, du er datter av solen og månen, født i et dødelig rike for å lyse opp et liv". It means that I am the daughter of the sun and the moon on a mortal realm.'

'You miss your mom?' 'Wish I did.' 'Did something happen?' 'No… not really, we just were never too close. After the early years. I don't really talk about… family. Maddy's the closest thing to family I've got now. Well apart from Andre, but I rarely see him.' 'He live far away?'

'He doesn't really live anywhere - he's a proper rockstar, on tour about 9 months a year. Most the rest he's living in a mobile home travelling from studio to studio. "Live fast, make penger, and retire at 30" he says. He won't though. He loves travelling too much.'

Blair then walked into the room, surprising them both. 'Ally, I've told you about running off.' 'Sorry.' As Alex reached the room, she picked up the youngster, and took her downstairs, leaving the former rivals to talk.

'I'm sorry about Ally, she can't help herself. I hope she wasn't too much of a pain.' Astrid just smiled to herself. 'It's fine, I really don't mind. Let me know if you ever need some respite.' 'Must admit I never had you down as the…' 'Caring type?' 'Not caring, I just didn't have you as much of a kid person.'

She then laughed. 'It's fine, nobody does. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a schoolteacher.' 'Learn something new every day. I mean, I never expected you to be anything other than what I knew.' 'You mean you didn't know I had any other interests.'

'Yeah… something like that.' 'Don't worry, I get it all the time. I get it, people just don't know me.' 'You want the truth?' Astrid shrugged. 'Sure.' 'I think people are kind of scared of you.' 'Don't know why.' 'Probably cause they don't really know you. Also, people are idiots.' 'I'll give you that one.'

The blonde then stood up straight, stretching her back. 'I'm going to see Maddy.' 'Be careful of small people on your way out.' 'That's enough about Rio.' Blair then giggled. 'I'll tell her you said that.' 'I don't doubt it.' Astrid strode out of the room, while Blair watched her go.

Manchester Magistrates Court

James walked in, ready for his initial hearing, full of confidence. 'All rise.' As they did, the judge held the initial hearing. But there was a surprise charge. 'James Alan Birchall, you are here charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of grevious bodily harm, and two counts of extreme pornography.'

The last charge caught James and his defence lawyers totally by surprise. 'Your honour, the defendant has not been informed about the last charge.' 'Mr. Graves, the defendant will have the opportunity to prove their innocence during the trial. Mr. Birchall, please enter your plea.'

Arrogantly, he stated the inevitable. 'Not Guilty.' Hearing this, the judge nodded. 'Having reviewed the case notes, and with the severity of the charges, I have decided to remand you in custody until April 15th.' James was furious hearing this, but before he could say anything, he was taken down to the holding cells.

In the hospital

Maddy had her head buried in her new book again while writing furiously in her notepad when Hannah walked in, wearing biking leathers and carrying two large paper bags. 'Right, so I've spoken to your doctors.' 'Sorry, I totally didn't notice you were there Mam - what's up?'

'I've spoken to the doctors.' 'And?' 'They have agreed to let you go home tomorrow' 'Thank the lord.' 'Let me finish please. They have agreed to let you go tomorrow, but they want you to come back every week for a check-up for at least two months.' 'That's fine, as long as I get to go. Thanks Mam, I owe you now.' 'Nonsense.'

She then passed the two bags to Maddy. 'Call this a little treat. The plain bag is some homemade sandwiches.' 'What kind?' 'Your favourite - beef and ale.' 'Awesome. So what's the other bag?' 'Astrid sent it - she said it was something called "Brown cheese". Apparently it's to keep your spirits up.'

Hearing this made Maddy smile. 'Thank you.' Hannah then sat next to her. 'You staying for a while then?' 'Well it's either that, or listen to Phil and Blair talk about torque differentials and the benefits of a hybrid engine. I think that you're just about the better option here.'

In the base

Just as Astrid had put shoes on ready to head to the hospital, she was once again accosted by Ally, despite Alex's best efforts to prevent it. 'Ally, I've told you about jumping on people.' 'No, it's fine, I don't mind. How about me and you go and sit down while the boring adults get a coffee.' 'Yeah!'

As they were all sat down together, Ally pointed at Astrid's headband. 'Why do you wear that all the time?' 'It's a fun story. This has a special name in our culture - it's called a Kransen. K-r-a-n-s-e-n. Sorry, Alex is it?' 'That's me.' 'Has she learned about… babies yet?'

'They teach them early these days.' Astrid then continued her story. 'As I was saying, it's called a Kransen. It's a special piece of fabric or leather which is passed down through the generations from a mother to her daughter on the day she is born. It's said to promote fertility and vitality. When the daughter grows up and gets married, she stores the Kransen in a special box made from wood from the highest tree in the area, ready to pass on to the next generation.'

By now, several other club members had started listening to the story. 'So how old is yours?' 'I believe I am the 9th generation to wear this. I still have the box it came in, although it's not looking so healthy these days. That will happen when it's over 250 years old.'

Astrid then turned to Ally. 'Ally, do you want to hear how brave your Auntie Blair is?' 'Yeah.' 'My friend Maddy, she's been really ill recently. So ill that her kidneys didn't work anymore.' 'Like Grandad Sam's computer after she kicked it?' 'A bit, yes. But Maddy's kidneys didn't work. And you need a kidney to be alive.'

'Is… she ok?' 'Yes. And it's all thanks to Blair - she gave Maddy one of her kidneys.' 'What did she get in return?' 'Nothing, other than the pride of giving. That's what the mark on her back is - they had to put Blair to sleep and cut her back open to give her kidney to Maddy. And because of her, Maddy's being released from hospital soon.'

Alex then looked over at her de facto sister. 'That all true?' Blair just nodded. 'I'm proud of you.' 'Thanks, but… I don't really want to talk about it. I just did what any reasonable human being would.' 'Up there, Gramma will be so proud of you.' Overcome by emotion, Blair quickly made her exit, which Ally noticed.

'Where did Auntie Blair go?' Astrid then covered quickly. 'The truth is, Blair's still very tired. She's going to be like this for a couple of days yet I think. In the meantime, we've got a couple of spare rooms. Go to the far right office and ask for Jodi - she'll help you.'

The next day

As Maddy was getting ready to be released from hospital, she made a point of making the hospital bed neatly, before turning around and walking out under her own steam. As she reached the car park, Phil was parked in the Aston, and he immediately flashed at her through the driving snow.

After she stepped into the car, they drove off. 'I would have come in but a certain somebody told me that you didn't want me to.' 'Wasn't that I didn't want you to, I wanted to walk out under my own power. I didn't have the control of walking in. I'm not some sick kid.'

'Why can't you accept being ill?' 'I'm fine, honestly. Everything works.' 'I just want you to be careful for a while. If you damage this kidney' 'Like I did it deliberately.' 'I didn't say that.' 'I just need people to stop treating me like I'm a fragile cub. I appreciate the concern like, but I'm fine on me own. I can look after myself.'

'There is no harm in trying to look after you.' 'I know, and thank you. But I just want to get on with stuff. I just want to build up, somehow get through the trials, and maybe then I'll take a little time off. I've already lost my title, I don't need to lose anything else.'

'YOur title? That's going nowhere. Not yet anyway.' 'But I can't compete. I'll have to forfeit my defence in India.' Phil then made an interesting proposition to Maddy. 'There is a way to keep your title. If you agree for me to explain publicly in India why you're off, we can get a 90 day grace period in which you're exempt from defending your title.'

'And after the 90 days?' 'You already said it. If you can't compete, then there's nothing that can be done. It's entirely up to you, but this is how you can keep your title.' Maddy rolled her eyes. 'Fine, but don't exaggerate, k?' 'I'll tell them as little as I can get away with. I'll contact the board of directors later.'

'So, you want to go straight home?' 'Is there any chance we can pop into the base first? I just want to see how things are there.' 'If you want to go there first, we'll go there first.' One 3-point turn later, the silver car streamed towards the base, like a bullet carving through the atmosphere.

When they got there, they parked up at the back of the base, in order to minimise the fuss. Immediately Jodi saw them, having taken a cigarette break. 'Oh hey, I didn't know you were out.' 'Yeah, only released about 20 minutes ago.' 'How are you feeling?' 'Honestly? Pretty crap. Got 3 cracked ribs as well. Just glad to be out though. How's Rio?'

'Oh yeah she's absolutely fine. Nothing's changed while you've been gone. Well… other than Taylor singing… constantly. Really don't know what's got into her.' 'Wish I could tell you. Anyway, it's just a quick visit.' She then walked into the base, and was surprised to see life going on as normal.

That was until Freja saw her. 'Guys, Maddy's here.' Immediately, everyone popped their heads around wherever they were, but with the exception of Rio, none of them came close. 'If you're wondering why the inmates aren't running riot, I asked them to give you some space when you came back.'

'Thanks Rio.' 'Sure you're ok? Never seen you so quiet.' 'I'm fine, I'm just well tired and beat up. I guess the time off duelling will do me some good.' 'Well the office is just up there when you want it back.' 'You sure you're ok with that? Seems like a lot of responsibility for no reward.'

'I don't need rewarding for taking responsibility. Although… a duel would be nice when you're better. Maybe put the presidency on the line?' Maddy laughed hearing this. 'You got it.' The two slapped hands, and after a quick look around the base, went to leave, only for Ally to nearly jump on her in the process.

Alex then grabbed her de facto daughter in mid air. 'Hi, I heard about your issues.' 'Thanks, but it's genuinely the last thing I want to talk about right now.' 'Can I talk to you somewhere?' 'I know you've not been here much, but nowt's a secret in here.' 'It's just that we're on holiday in the UK for a few weeks, but the place we're renting isn't available for a week yet.'

'Odd error.' 'Apparently the people renting it out are going on a year-long holiday, but they've had to delay for a week. The reason I wanted to talk was that Rio's allowed us to stay here until the place is available.' 'Yeah that's fine, she's in charge right now.' This distraction had given Lydia the time to come over.

'Am I going to be bugged by everyone?' 'Well if you don't want to talk to me' 'That isn't what I said.' 'It's just nice to see you again.' 'It's nice to be back. How's trid been?' 'Er yeah, she's been ok, not seen a lot of her to be fair, but she's kept herself busy. Hey, did you know that Astrid was good with kids? Like, really good?'

Maddy seemed surprised at the question. 'Well… yes. I didn't think it was a secret. It's just that nobody bothers to talk to her enough to actually learn anything. Like, it's only me and Fre who regularly spend time with her. Anyway, everything been ok here?'

'Absolutely, other than the entry system threatening to set Alex on fire. And no, I am not calling it… that thing you want us to call it.' 'Spoilsport. But yeah, Astrid's really good with kids. Did she tell Ally the Kransen story?' 'Yeah, how did you' 'Believe it or not, when you're friends with somebody you actually tend to talk to 'em.'

'You know what bra size she is then?' Lydia quipped sarcastically, unprepared for the answer. 'She don't wear one.' 'How did you' 'We room together, duh.' After this frank conversation, Maddy quietly left, without anybody even noticing.
