Renegades: A New Dawn

Chapter XXXX: The Final Lesson

The date had only made Blair and Jade closer. Even a revelation the next morning couldn't split them, as a slightly hungover Blair was about to find out when she got up, having spent the night with her beloved. As she came into the main room dressed in little more than a vest and dressing gown, Jade backheeled the door, and it slammed shut with a terrible thud.

'I know about Rio.' 'Oh… I'm sorry, I wanted to tell you' 'I know that Rio told you not to. She's explained everything, from how you held yourself together to how you were willing to give up on our special night for her.' 'I'm sorry that I lied about that.' 'Technically she lied. And I completely understand, we're not going to fall out over it. If anything it was probably the right decision all things considered.'

Blair bowed her head hearing this, and exhaled in relief. 'For a moment I thought that was us done.' Jade just laughed. 'No silly, of course not. It would take a lot more than just this to split us up. At least on my end. I hope you're the same?' 'Seriously?' Jade then giggled. 'You're so paranoid! I know we're good. Listen, I wanted to ask you something that I forgot last night.'

'Sure.' 'Well, it's just…' 'Spit it out Jade.' 'Fine, I was just going to ask if you fancied coming to the Mosque with me on Friday? I spoke to the Imam and he said that non-Muslims are welcome as long as they don't cause trouble.' 'I'd love to! I'd really like that. Thank you. It might help me work out what I want to do with my life.' 'We can speak to him afterwards if you like. I know it can be daunting, but they are always happy to help.'

'Sounds like everyone's super nice.' 'I mean not everyone would be that friendly probably but I've only met niceness since I moved here. Speaking of… how would you feel about moving in with me?' Blair stuttered having been asked. 'It's fine, if you don't want to, just say.' 'It's… listen, I'd love to, but I'm not ready now. I've just got too much in my head at the moment.'

Jade nodded in disappointment but understanding. 'That's fine, I didn't think you'd be ready to right now, but I just wanted to give it a go with asking.' Blair smiled, and put her hand over her girlfriend's. 'I will do. One day, just not today.' They kissed, and Blair blushed again. 'You know you don't have to do that every time that we do that, don't you?' 'I'm not doing it deliberately! I… I'm just not used to this whole physical contact stuff I guess.'

'It's fine, I should be more understanding of it.' 'Well no because it ain't fair on you. Really takes you out of the moment doesn't it?' 'A little, but not really. I just want to help you get past it all. You've spent all of your life being hurt by people all of the time, you're scarred, I get it. I just want to heal you, make you realise that you can love.' Blair just looked into Jade's eyes, and said 'One day, I'll be able to love without hating. Without despising my sisters for what they did to me all these years, without hating my birth mother for immediately giving me up, without hating myself for taking it for so long.'

The green-haired Iranian just put her arm around Blair, 'Come on, I'll help you with that. You've got me, you've got Rio, you've got the rest of the Renegades, I mean that lot love you! I've had some of them tell me that you're like the mother duck of that lot.' 'According to who?' 'Well I can't mention names, but one of them's a twin with red hair, and the other likes terrible music from the 90s.'

'Well that's easy, Maddy's taste in music is notoriously awful. As for the twin, Freja's dying her hair purple. Or green. Or blue. It depends on what mood she's in.' Jade couldn't help but giggle. 'I'm guessing you've got some stories from there.' 'Boy do I. You don't know about the time Maddy got everyone to go on strike yet.' They kissed again, and then Blair looked at her watch. 'God, it's 11:30 already? Time flies when you're hungover apparently.'

This made Jade freak out. 'Half 11? The Arena Finals!' 'They're today? I thought they were next week. I thought we'd have a nice relaxing day together.' 'I told you all along that they're today, In half an hour actually. And I've not got my deck ready, my hair's a mess still, I meant to have a shower this morning, and I'm not going to make it there on time.' 'Just…. Stop, ok? You can sort out your deck after you get there, as long as you scan it in after you've finished it. You'll be last up, remember. And I'll sort your hair on the way.'

'Still need a shower, I stink of sweat and diane sauce after last night.' Thinking as quickly as her hungover brain could, Blair produced a can of deodorant. 'We'll grab some mints on the way if you like. So grab your deck, and we'll make a break for it.' She responded by rummaging through her bed-side draws for a couple of minutes, before plucking out a brown leather deck pouch, and slipping it gently onto her belt, and then picking out a purple and pink hairbrush, before they rushed out of the flat, with Jade hurriedly running back from halfway down the street upon realising that the door was still unlocked.

In the arena office

Phil was making preparations for the arena finals with music blaring loudly from his computer. 'Computer four, no issues. Ok, activate.' As he clicked, the scoreboard switched on, showing the manufacturer logo before coming up with the default of Phil vs. Hannah. 'Right, since the drones aren't being used today we'll do a full debug on them.' There was then a knock on the door, but he didn't notice.

'So we go into System Settings, then into CPU Management, and from there we go into Simulation System, select all eight Simulants, go for a full debug, Password is CTD1, then we're in business.' Shortly after this, there was another knock on the door, this time firm enough for him to turn around, finding Belle stood at the door, hair down stretching to the bottom of her shoulders, wearing a black shirt and jeans.

Seeing this, he quickly shut off the music and unlocked the door, allowing her in. 'Belle, big day today. How can I help?' 'I was going to ask you the same question. You said that you might have some work for me?' 'Yes. I'm looking for a protege. Not in the form of Blair or Rio, they're great, but they're already strong. I'm looking for a proper project. Take a seat Belle.'

She did just that, pushing her hair back as she sat. 'So what is it you want then?' 'I'm looking for a duelist who I can mould into the perfect warrior. Brave, strong, talented, and willing to complete the mission at hand.' 'In other words you want a lackey.' 'Less of a lackey and more of an… understudy. A personal assistant and someone I can teach in return.'

'And you want me?' 'I'm interested in you. You are a fiercely talented duelist for someone who's been at it such a short time. But what attracts me to you is your focus and dedication, and your ability to keep your emotions under check. But I need to see a little more from you.' 'What do you want then? Whatever it is, I'm sure I can oblige.' Phil nodded, and smiled.

'I want to see a different side of you against Jade. I want to see not just everything you've learned, but everything you are capable of. When you faced me, you didn't lose because you were strictly inferior. You lost because you hesitated. You could have beaten me if you had faith in your ability. If you can show me everything you have, then I will find a place for you.'

This seemed to motivate Belle, as her gaze hardened. 'Working for you is a job that I want more than anything else. I'll make an example of Jade, and show you that I'm the correct person for the job. She won't just lose, she'll be annihilated. THAT might show you what you want to see.' As she walked off, he smiled to himself. 'That put some fire into her. Now let's see if you can deliver what I'm looking for.'

Elsewhere in the base

Lydia was just packing some freshly washed clothes into her wardrobe when Rio walked into the room unannounced, having not talked to anybody since her diagnosis. Sheepishly, she began to talk. 'Um… hey?' Lydia spun around and looked shocked. 'Rio, I… I'm just relieved to see you.' 'Nothing's happened. Not yet anyway.' 'So if you don't mind me saying, what brought you here?'

Rio continued to speak in hushed tones, clearly feeling delicate still. 'I… uh, I heard that you're, like some sort of fortune teller?' Lydia was just about to deny knowledge of this when Freja dropped her in it, carrying a large cardboard box. 'Yeah, she's real good with Tarot cards. Ironic when it started as a scam after she lost her job.' Normally Rio would be enquiring about Lydia's working arrangements, but in her current mental state, the thought didn't occur, or at least so much as her primary objective.

'I… need you to do me a reading, fortune thing, whatever you call 'em.' The elder twin hesitated slightly, clearly unsure at the request. But it wasn't her own ability that she was doubting. 'Listen, I'm not sure that it's a good idea Rio.' 'Why not?' 'Listen, I have no idea what I'm going to find if I do this for you. And I don't want to be responsible for piling on more bad news for you, I don't want that on my conscience.'

But Rio was bullish, and wouldn't take no for an answer. 'I've already been told I'm dying. I've got nothing else to lose. What will be will be.' Lydia exhaled loudly, and looked over at Freja. 'Could you get my Tarot deck out please?' 'You want the hat as well?' 'If I did, I would have asked for it.' 'Ok cranky, no thank you would have done. You know, basic manners.'

Freja rummaged through a drawer for a couple of minutes, before producing a matchbox with a simple purple eye drawn onto it in what looked like felt-tip pen. 'Sorry about the state of the box, the proper one got damaged a few weeks ago.' 'It's fine, let's just do this.' Lydia thought of saying something regarding this curtness, but in lieu of Rio's situation, opted for diplomacy, taking the form of a polite nod.

She then produced her cards, each with a purple back, which had two golden keys crossed in the centre, representing the unlocking of the past, present, and future. Lydia then went through the process. 'What I'm going to do is split the pack into three equal piles. Each contains one of every card in the pack. I will flip one card from every pack. That will represent the past, the present, and the future. Before I start, and I know your answer, but are you 100% sure about going through with this?'

Rio said nothing, but the look in her eyes was steadfast. 'There's clearly no chance of talking you out of this. Right, we start with a question, What do we want the cards to tell us?' Rio just stared right on through while speaking. 'I want to know about my terminal condition and why I have it.' Lydia then posed a question.

'Cards, today we come together to ask a question. The question is so: Why has Rio's terminal illness come to pass, and what lies in her future with this condition?' Lydia's eyes then glazed over somewhat, and she spoke slower. 'We begin with the past. This can represent any situation or feeling which has previously occurred in your history that relates to now.' Lydia closed her eyes, and flipped the top card of the first pack, placing it gently onto the table.

As she opened her eyes, she saw the card for the first time. 'The Hierophant, right side up. This card represents the identity of being a follower, perhaps of a group, perhaps of an ideology. It suggests that in your past you have always been at your most comfortable when passively following, being part of a group but perhaps not at the forefront. Your role has always been as a member, not a leader.'

'The keys at the bottom, do they mean anything?' 'They suggest the unlocking of mysteries, and the connection between the conscious and unconscious mind. This may be related to your Barian form, as you were initially unaware.' 'I always knew there was… something. I just never knew what… hang on, what does this have to do with anything?'

'The Hierophant represents an ideology, or a set of beliefs if you will. It is likely that your path was set into motion through an action which you believed was th3 correct position to take, in the spiritual or moral world.

'The Chariot, upright. The Chariot represents a challenge, some obstacle or event you must overcome.' 'You mean my injuries, right?' 'It seems likely given where it is in your spread. This challenge will not be easy. It will be long and difficult, and you will have times where the road seems impassable. But don't fear, because if you have the willpower to persevere, you will overcome your challenge, and the experience will stand you in good stead.'

Rio just sat there shocked. But Freja smiled at her. 'It means you're going nowhere. Right now at least. As long as you keep fighting anyway.' This almost got a smile, but there was more. 'The Chariot also represents Ambition. It encourages you to identify what it is that you really want to achieve, and fully commit to trying to acquire it, rather than shying away from the challenge. This can be professionally or personally.'

Having had her reading, she went to leave, only for Lydia to grab her arm, almost instinctively. 'Your reading is not done. We still have to look into the future.' 'Sorry, I've never done one of these before.' She sat politely, as Lydia's hand hovered over the card, and she flipped it over, slamming it onto the table.

'The Wheel of Fortune is right side up. This is a powerful card which represents a permanent cycle. It suggests that if you are going through a bad time in your life, the situation may be about to resolve itself. It's always darkest just before the dawn, and this card represents that. You will see some form of improvement in a negative situation. Be warned however, for this works both ways.'

'It… does?' 'Correct. Therefore, while negative situations will improve, any particularly positive situation will also begin to come to an end. The Wheel represents a status quo, a certain equilibrium that the world must return to. Luck will balance itself out. It is also a warning of the power of Karma.'

'What does that mean' She asked gingerly. 'It means that if you have wronged people, then an appropriate punishment may be about to come your way. It can either be a warning to change your ways and redress the balance, or a statement that it is too late and you must take your punishment. Similarly however, if you or those close to you have been wronged, it is a sign that justice will be upon those who require punishment.'

'There is also a final meaning: Destiny. It is a positive card that asks you to trust the universe, for it will take you in the correct direction for your goals. The road may be long, but there is a destined goal at the end of it. Perhaps they who have wronged you will end up giving up something to you in recompense? Or maybe the payment will be spiritual, perhaps seeing an evildoer receive a taste of their own medicine will be enough for you?'

Suddenly, Lydia seemed to snap out of her apparent spell. 'Looks pretty good eh?' Rio didn't say anything, but instead stood up, slid a 50 pound note out of her pocket onto the table, and walked out of the room silently, barely even lifting her gaze. As she did, Freja watched on. 'She… she'll be ok, won't she?' 'I… don't know. I still can't get over it all.'

Flashback: The previous day, 4:40pm

The base was as vibrant and hectic as ever, when an alarm went off, with Maddy's voice following. 'There will be a club meeting in 10 minutes. I repeat, there will be a club meeting in 10 minutes. All present club members are expected to attend. Thank you.' This update got people wondering what was going on, as Maddy was still signed off indefinitely, and there had been no sign of Acting President Rio all afternoon.

As they gathered in the Great Hall for the meeting, they were greeted by Astrid taking a meeting for the first time ever. Immediately though, people noticed something was wrong, as she was struggling to make eye contact with anybody. After a short wait, she decided to speak.

'Thanks for coming, I know, you weren't expecting to see me, I'm about 5th in command, but I'll explain afterwards. I have been asked to make an announcement by Rio. In fact, I've got a statement to read out.' Astrid then rummaged through her pocket for a couple of minutes, before pulling out a sheet of paper. With incredible internal strength, she read the letter clearly and steadily.

'Hi everyone, Rio here. I'm sorry to have interrupted your day, whatever you were doing, but there's something which you need to know. I had a medical appointment yesterday, which is why Blair was looking after things for me. Well, I had a call back asking me to come back in today as they needed to talk to me about the results of some scans they ran.'

'These results showed that I have a serious brain condition, which I cannot write down because I don't know how to spell it. However, all I do know is that I've been informed that my illness is terminal. Or to put it another way, I am dying. I don't know when, I don't know what state I'll be in by that point, but the point remains that I am terminally ill. As such, I am going to be off duty for the foreseeable future while I come to terms with this diagnosis.'

'I also want to set out here that while I am off, Blair will be Acting President of the Renegades. This is something I have discussed with her previously and she indicated that she would be willing to take over the club for me should I ever be unable to. As this statement is being read publicly, I want to officially ask Astrid Hofferson (spelt Huffersun), to become Acting Vice President while I am away. Thank you, RK.'

A stunned silence fell upon the entire hall as people began to process what they had just heard. There was no speech for several minutes, only the faint sound of held-back tears from various individuals. Eventually it was Astrid herself who broke the silence. 'We can do this. She needs our support right now, and that means business as normal. The last thing she'll want to hear is about her condition. So we need to pull together. Because there is nothing stronger than the Renegades together.'

This impassioned speech lead to a round of applause, but Astrid didn't seem bothered. Lydia then had a question. 'Hey, where's everyone else anyway?' 'Maddy is still signed off for medical reasons, Blair is off on compassionate leave, Phil recently resigned his post as advisor to the President, and Jodi isn't here on Fridays. Anyway, I'm sorry I had to deliver that news, but understandably, Rio wasn't able to. Just give her space guys.'

End of Flashback

Lydia just stared on. 'I can't imagine going through something like that.' 'Me neither, I know she's strong, but this might just be the final straw for her.' 'Let's just hope that the fortune telling helped.' Freja then got curious about something. 'Do you actually know what happened with the reading?' The elder twin looked around, startled. 'Yeah, of course I do.' 'What did you think to Blair and Rio's argument then?' 'It was pretty nasty seeing them like that.'

Freja then dug her sister in the ribs. 'That never happened Lyds. Tell me what's going on with you.' Stubbornly, she refused. 'No idea what you're talking about.' 'Lydia, tell me what's going on, or everyone here finds out that you got fired. And I mean EVERYONE.' Lydia thought her sister was joking until she looked around, and saw the shark-like stare in her eyes. 'I'm deadly serious.'

'Fine, you win. I don't know. Recently when I've been doing these tarot readings, it's almost like I'm going into a trance or something. I have no memory of what happened from the moment I touched the top of the tarot deck, and I only know what cards were revealed when I'm done with the reading.' Freja responded with an indignant shrug. 'Why didn't you just say?' 'Because it's none of your business. And you wouldn't dare tell people about my job - if they find out about the scam, we're both in shit.'

'Not both of us - this was all your idea. You're just paying me, and I emphasise grossly underpaying me, because I accidentally found out when me and Astrid were down at the market last week.' This revelation put the wind up Lydia. 'Wait… does she know?' 'Yeah, of course she knows, she isn't deaf. It's lucky for you that she doesn't want paying off. Although you might want to buy her some of that proper expensive hairspray she uses to say thank you. Or some gel, I've been mithering her about that for at least a month.'

'I'm not bribing someone when they aren't even going to tell on me, you must be mad!' 'It's not a bribe, it's a thank you.' 'A thank you for what - keeping her stupid mouth shut? I don't owe her or anybody else anything.' 'We both know that isn't true. We owe so much to some people. Like Phil. Who I would like to point out you've been ragging on constantly for weeks now for just about nothing.' Thankful? 'For what - hypnotising us, forcing us to join him?' 'He gave us a home, a purpose, something to fight for. I don't know what's wrong with you but all I know is I owe him so much. Think where your priorities lie sis.' Freja then stormed out of the room, leaving Lydia to stew.

In the Arena

Phil and Hannah were sharing a playful joke or two with each other to pass the time when Freja walked in. 'If you're looking for the finals, it doesn't begin for 20 minutes yet. Oh, and if you want to train against the drones, there is a big notice near the door, you'll have to wait until tomorrow.' Freja though had other things on her mind. 'I want you to brainwash me. Properly.' Phil put his drink down, and stood up.

'Slow down. What's going on - your face is bright red, and I don't think I've seen you this worked up in years.' 'Me and Lyds have had a massive argument, and… you know what, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that I've decided I want to become a proper slave for you and Hannah.' 'Why exactly?' 'Because I realised that serving you makes me happy. I'm not smart, I'm not funny' 'Astrid would disagree' 'I can't clean, I can't cook' 'Again, Astrid would disagree.' 'Point is, this is something I like and I'm good at it.'

Hannah then looked at him. 'It could provide some entertainment. Might spice things up a bit even.' She then walked over to Freja. 'How would you respond to being our live-in maid? You know, available whenever we want you, free to do what you like the rest of the time?' 'So… basically being your pet?' 'Yeah, that's a good way to put it. Also, you refer to us as Master and Mistress, and you're responsible for entertaining us.'

Freja didn't hesitate in her answer. 'Deal.' Hannah then got a video up on her tablet, showing it to her new pet. 'Tomorrow night, at 10pm, you will perform this routine for us. Understand?' 'Yes Mistress.' 'Now I want you to go out and buy yourself a dog collar.' She just smiled in response. 'Yes mistress.' She then walked off, smiling as she did, and winking at them both.

Phil then looked at Hannah. 'What? I knew you'd say no, so I came up with a compromise. Don't pretend you're not going to enjoy it.' 'I know, but' 'She's serious about this. I don't know what's gone on between those two, but maybe… maybe…' 'Maybe what? We're close but I ain't a mind reader.' Hannah then pitched an idea to him. 'What if, Freja started spending time with you more at events.'

'Hannah, we spend most of the time together anyway, we all do, it's kind of unavoidable.' 'No, I mean, like Blair and Rio do.' 'So you're pitching that I manage her?' 'I mean if she agrees, but even if you don't want to, just have her spend time with you all.' Phil seemed somewhat sceptical about this, looking at his wife with a doubtful look.

'She does have Astrid for all of that. And besides, Astrid needs somebody to hang around with until Maddy's fit to travel.' 'Is she not coming to Dublin?' 'Don't think so. I'd have to ask, but' Conveniently, Maddy walked in at that exact moment, swigging from an alcopop bottle. 'Hey guys, heard my ears burning. You know, Wolfblood, supersonic hearing?' Phil just looked at her sternly.

'What, I only heard what you were saying about me and Dublin. And by the way, the answer is no, I'm not coming.' Despite this answer, the look at her remained. 'What is it you're staring at me for?' He said nothing, but stared at the bottle in her hand. 'Oh this? Mixed berry flavour if you want one, the off licence sells 'em real cheap.' 'Maddy, you know the rules regarding alcohol in the arena.'

'Well what's that bottle in the office then?' She enquired, pointing attention to a similar-sized bottle sat on the office desk. 'Alcohol free cider. It's actually for Hannah but I forgot to bring it out of the office. Go and check if you like, but if you do then you can get it for her as well. You know you're not allowed alcohol in the arena, it says so at the entrance.'

Maddy rolled her eyes while listening to this. 'Next you'll be telling me I'm too drunk to stay in here.' 'Depends how many you've had.' The conversation was then interrupted by a loud burp from the president, who started giggling at her own gaseous nature. 'Sorry, can't help it. This is my 2nd one.' He then looked over at his wife. 'Two should be fine shouldn't it? She can handle her drink pretty well.'

'Yeah, I've seen her neck three cans of lager in 10 minutes before and still be acting normal.' Hannah then made the call. 'Have you been drinking on an empty stomach?' 'I guess so, yeah?' 'Go and get something to eat then - might settle down the burping.' Maddy obliged, and left to make a sandwich. Shortly after, Rio walked in, shocking both Phil and Hannah.

'Are you sure this is a good idea Rio?' She just looked at him and lifted her shoulders. 'I dunno. But it beats moping around all day. By the way, I got a text from Blair, Jade might be late, Blair forgot to lock the door to Jade's apartment.' He just nodded. 'It's a good job she's up last then. Could you let everyone in Rio?' She just smiled at him, and opened the doors, signalling for them to walk in.

After they all sat down, the doors were closed. 'Welcome everyone, to the inaugural Advanced Duelling Course finals. Today you will take each other on to determine your final placings in the course. In a minute I will run through the rules for this finale, but first, I want to explain that as long as you complete your duel, you will be accredited, and will all receive a place in pre-qualifying for Worlds at worst.'

'Now for the rules.' A list then appeared behind him, as he ran through it.

One round, 8k start, no time limit

Higher ranked duelist chooses who goes first.

At the start of the duel the Field spell "Chicken Game" will be activated. It cannot be removed from the field and no other Field Spell may be activated

Duelists have 180 seconds for each turn. At 180 seconds, the turn ends automatically. If a battle is taking place at the end of the time period, then the battle will be allowed to conclude as normal, but no further battles may be conducted.

All match winners are banned, as are Self-Destruct Button and Last Turn. Alternate win conditions such as Exodia are not banned, however you are strongly advised not to use them.

Talking in the stands is to be kept to a minimum and as quiet as reasonably possible, to avoid match fixing or other unsportsmanlike behaviours. If you are being too loud, you will be warned. Three warnings and you will be asked to leave the arena until your duel.

If a duelist makes an illegal move, the opponent has 15 seconds to point it out, otherwise it is "accepted game state". Appeals after this time limit will not be considered.

Maximum of three incorrect appeals allowed. After 3rd, no more appeals may be made by that person for the duration of the duel.

If a duel is tied, 2000 LP Sudden Death decides the winner. If tied after this, Renegades Sudden Death Rules apply, with the first person to get 5 points winning (points are earned by destroying a monster or successfully hitting a direct attack)

Any purposeful cheating will result in an automatic match loss and removal from the course without accreditation. No money will be refunded in this case.

If you are unable to finish the duel for medical reasons, you automatically forfeit, but still receive accreditation for the lower position.

Phones/tablets are to be switched off at all times. No headphones or earbuds are to be used, apart from Kenzie's earplugs, which will be connected by a Renegades member pre-duel.

Anybody who alleges corruption will receive an automatic game loss unless it can be verified. They will still be accredited. If it can be verified, then the corrupt individual will be dealt with separately.

The winner is final. If you want to arrange rematches, it will have to be booked like normal and will not affect the course outcomes

All students must remain in the arena until every duel is finished. If any student needs to leave the arena for any reason, they may if accompanied by a Renegades member.

'Right, any questions?' Immediately, Denzil's hand flew up. 'So, like, there was no rules about changing your deck before the duel.' 'You are allowed to alter your deck as many times as you like until your duel. Before your duel starts, you will have to scan your deck in, and after that you're not allowed to change anything.' 'And if we don't scan it in?' 'Then the duel will never begin. If you've not scanned in 10 minutes after you were given the call, then you forfeit the duel.'

While Denzil was asking this, the door squealed open, and Jade quietly snuck in, hoping to not be noticed. A plan which was foiled immediately, as Phil saw her walk in. 'Good of you to join us Jade.' 'Sorry I'm late,' 'No explanation needed, Blair texted me to explain.' 'When?' '11:51. Apparently she forgot to lock your apartment's door.' A cry of "Ooh" then came from most of the arena. 'Funny' was her reaction.

'Behave children, I'm sure you've got something far more interesting to do while you're here. Oh wait, you do. Now any more questions not related to Jade's love life?' Kenzie then put her hand up. 'This kind of isn't related to the course, but like, if I'm duelling in the WDC, can I still use my earbuds?' He just nodded, and Hannah explained the situation.

'I've been talking to the Board of Directors regarding this, in fact I was sat in on a conference call with them this morning. They'll allow you to compete with your earbuds and modified duel disk, but we'll need to demonstrate how it works at the next event in Dublin. Just so they can be assured that it can't be used to cheat the system or anything like that. But the short answer is yes, you can.'

With this, the questions ended. 'Let's get cracking then. Fleur, as you are 9th and have no opponent, we have arranged for Arin Rin, who topped the Professional course, to compete against you.' As the pale-skinned Israeli walked in, his spiked hair pointing straight up towards the roof, Phil explained the motivation for Fleur's foe. 'Arin, as you are aware, if you win here, you will be given a place on the next Advanced Duelling Course, whenever that may be.'

Arin just nodded at him. 'Thanks for the opportunity.' He and Fleur scanned their decks in successfully, as Jade finally got to sit down, her long green hair rustling as she did. Meanwhile, Blair noticed Rio, and hustled over. 'Ri.' 'It's fine.' She then held her nose. 'Geezus, how much Bourbon did you have last night?' 'Judging by my head, too much.' 'You enjoy yourself?' 'It was ace.' On the duel field, Fleur and Arin shook hands, and Fleur signalled that she was going first.

Arena Finals 1: (Pro Course) Arin Rin LP:8000 vs. (9) Fleur Murphy LP:8000

Turn 1: Fleur: 'I'll start. I'll set a monster, set three Spell/Traps and pass.'

Arin: 'I'll draw. In the centre left column I activate World Legacy's Memory. This will allow me to summon Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall from my deck (Atk:2500) into that column. Next I'll summon Mekk Knight Blue Sky in the centre column (Atk:2000). I can do this despite it being Level 5 because there's two cards in the column I'm summoning it into. And for each of your cards in the column, I can search another Mekk Knight. I'll search for Red Moon and Indigo Eclipse.'

'Then I'll set a card in the centre-right column, and summon Indigo Eclipse into it (Atk:2400). With the effect of Indigo Eclipse, I can move it to a different Main Monster Zone. Clearing room to summon Mekk Knight Red Moon (Atk:2300). Then I'll link off Red Moon and Blue Sky to Link summon Link 2, Mekk Knight of the Morning Star (Atk:2000, Link Arrows: ).'

'I activate the effect of Morning Star, discarding Mekk-Knight Orange Sunset to add World Legacy Scars from my deck to my hand.' 'Sure, go ahead.' 'Then I'll activate Scars. All you need to worry about right now is it giving all Mekk-Knights 300 Attack points (Purple Nightfall Atk:2800, Indigo Eclipse Atk:2700, Morning Star Atk:2300). And now I use Purple Nightfall's effect to banish it and add Mekk-Knight Yellow Star to my hand, which I'll immediately summon through its effect (Atk:2500). Now I link off Morning Star and Yellow Star. Appear, Link 3, Mekk-Knight Spectrum Supreme (Atk:3000-3300, Link Arrows: ).'

'Indigo Eclipse, attack her set monster.' The searing attack from Indigo Eclipse fried Fleur's undead monster (Vampire Sorcerer Def.:1500) with ease. 'When you send Vampire Sorcerer to the graveyard, I get a search of a Vampire card. I'll add Vampire Domain.' 'Spectrum Supreme, attack directly.' As Spectrum Supreme was about to attack, the time buzzer went off, signifying that Arin had exceeded the turn time limit.

There was momentary confusion until referee Hannah reiterated the rules. 'As you declared the attack before the time was up, the attack goes through.' Fleur was visibly unhappy at this, but had no option but to take the big hit from the rainbow stream (Fleur LP:8000-4700). 'I end my turn.'

Fleur: 'I think I get it. I draw. I'll set a Spell/Trap in the left column, and then activate the effect of Vampire Sorcerer in my graveyard, to banish it. In return, I can Normal summon Shadow Vampire (Atk:2000). When Shadow Vampire makes his appearance, I can Special summon a Vampire monster from my hand or deck, but only that monster can attack this turn. I choose my Vampire's Familiar (Atk:500).'

'When Familiar is Special summoned, I can grab Vampire's Desire from my deck. And now I'll activate it, sending Vampire Duke to make Familiar Level 5 (Level:2-5). And I'll activate Book of Life, bringing Duke back and banishing Mekk-Knight of the Morning Star from your graveyard (Atk:2000).' As he arrived on the field, the Dracula-like Duke vanished, and rematerialised standing over Arin's deck.

'What's he doing over here?' 'Making sure you pay the cost. When Duke is Special summoned, I choose a type of card, and you send one from your deck to the graveyard. I choose Monster.' Arin seemed confused, but obliged and milled a copy of Mekk-Knight Orange Sunset. After a quick look in her Extra deck, Fleur simply stated 'Set one, pass', which seemed to put her opponent's nose out of joint. 'You're telling me you came all this way and didn't even check your Extra deck?' 'Hey, people make mistakes.'

Arin: 'Can't believe I had to travel up here for this. I draw. During the Standby phase, Purple Nightfall returns to the field (Def.:2000), and can banish itself again to search Blue Sky. Spectrum Supreme, attack directly.' As the rainbow-hued attack surged in, Fleur revealed her plan. 'I activate my face-down Wonder Xyz.' 'You lied to me!' She got quite offended by this allegation. 'Hey, I didn't say that I made mistakes, I said people. Now I can Xyz summon on your turn. So I'll overlay my three Level 5 monsters to Xyz summon Digvorzhak, King of Heavy Industry (Atk:3200). And it's going in the same column as your Spectrum Supreme. So now you can't attack directly.'

Arin puffed his cheeks out having been outfoxed. 'In Main Phase 2, I'll use the effect of Scars to discard Mekk-Knight Avram, and draw a replacement card. A card which I'm going to set in my Spell and Trap zone, and end my turn.'

Fleur: 'I draw. I'll activate Digvorzhak's effect, sending the top three cards of your deck to the graveyard. For every monster, I destroy a card on your field.' Arin huffed, and sent Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall, Mekk-Knight Yellow Star, and Gozen Match. 'Two out of three ain't bad. I'm going to take out your back row and World Legacy Scars!'

He tried to hide his frustration, but it was clear as day that the Pro course ace had just seen his plan backfire. 'So it was Destruction Insurance? What was the plan - burn me for game? Oh, and if you want to know, yes, I do know that Scars has a second effect. But you need it on the field still.' Arin nodded, as if he had received a premonition. 'I underestimated you.' 'Too right. Now Digvorzhak can attack directly.' 'Swift Scarecrow effect in my hand, to end the Battle phase.' 'I end my turn with a face-down.'

Arin: 'I draw. During the Standby phase, I'll bring Purple Nightfall back again (Atk:2500). Now I summon Mekk-Knight Avram (Atk:2000), and link off into Link 2, Mekk-Knight of the Morning Star (Atk:2000). Then I can Link off again, with Link 3 Spectrum Supreme being used as three materials, and Link 2 Morning Star as the other one! Take her out, Link 4, Mekk-Knight Crusadia Avramax (Atk:3000, Link Arrows: ).'

Facing down a fierce new threat, Fleur started to sweat. 'I don't know what that thing does and I don't want to know.' 'Well too bad, you're about to learn. I'll attack Digvorzhak with Avramax, and its effect will increase its Attack by that of your monster (Avramax Atk:3000-6200).' 'That's cool and all, but too bad I've got Half Unbreak.' Fleur's Trap not only halved her damage, but cushioned the blow for her mechanical menace (Fleur LP:4700-3200). 'I'll pass back to you.'

Fleur: 'I draw. I activate One Day of Peace. So both of us draw a card, and neither take damage until my next turn ends. I'll summon Glow-Up Bloom (Atk:0). Then I'll set two and end the turn.'

Arin: 'My turn. I activate Trade-In, to discard Purple Nightfall and draw two. I think I'll just end my' He stopped in his tracks as Fleur held her finger out. 'I activate the Crush Card Virus. All I have to do is tribute Glow-Up Bloom and then all the monsters on your field and in your hand with at least 1500 Attack are destroyed. Then the same goes for your next three Draw Phases.'

Arin went to discard, but Hannah then intervened. 'Arin, may I remind you that you have to reveal your hand for Crush Card, so that your opponent can confirm you are not cheating.' Annoyed, Arin snapped at the pregnant woman. 'There's about 20 neutral observers - why should I show her my entire hand?' Phil went to answer, but Hannah stopped him. 'I can look after myself thanks.'

She then got up and walked over. 'Arin, we are going by professional standards here. I understand the rules aren't as well enforced on the Pro Course, however these are the standards you would be held to as a professional. Now if you wouldn't mind, can you just do it so we can get on with the duel.' Reluctantly, Arin showed his hand, and discarded Mekk-Knight Blue Sky and Mekk-Knight Red Moon, leaving only World Legacy's Secret in his hand. 'I'll set one and end my turn.'

Fleur: 'I draw. I'll set two and pass.'

Arin: 'I draw.' 'Show me your card.' 'Watch your mouth.' 'Just do it already.' As the duel got increasingly bad-tempered, Arin revealed that he had drawn Mekk-Knight Yellow Star. '2100 was more than 1500 the last time I looked.' 'Fine, it's gone. I activate World Legacy's Secret, which will revive Mekk-Knight Spectrum Supreme.' 'Only if I don't have an answer - I activate Royal Prison. This stops either of us from Special summoning any monster from the graveyard.'

Arin then started panicking. 'How am I supposed to win now?' He then looked over, and signalled for someone to come over, which Blair did, taking a message straight to Hannah, who nodded. 'Arin has requested to look at the remaining cards in his deck. Fleur, are you ok with this?' 'If he does, he'll get an advantage.' 'He will be forced to shuffle his deck afterwards.' 'Fine, let him.'

Arin then took his deck out of his duel disk, and looked through all the remaining cards, before deactivating his duel disk. 'Arin, do you wish to surrender?' He simply nodded at her. 'Then I have to declare Fleur Murphy the winner via surrender. Will both duelists please leave the zone?' After a bad-blooded encounter, Fleur and Arin didn't even acknowledge each other as they left the zone.

'That was an eventful first duel you might say. Nethertheless, Fleur proved why she deserves to graduate from this course. Now I would like to invite onto the duel field the next two competitors: Emma Clarke and Mike Rawlis.' As they stepped into the field of play, Fleur returned from the toilet and sat next to Brooke.

'Is that the first time you've duelled well?' 'Here it might as well be. I don't know why he was sending all his monsters to the graveyard though.' 'Wait, you don't know what World Legacy Scars does?' 'I figured it did something, but I don't know what.' 'If he banishes eight Mekk-Knights with different names from his field or graveyard, he can banish your entire Extra Deck.'

Fleur seemed shocked at the fate she had avoided. 'Good job I didn't run into it then. Not that there was much to banish - I only had 7 cards in there.' 'You should have told them - they would have let you fill up your Extra deck with cards from the box in the back.' Brooke then hailed Hannah over. 'Everything ok?' 'Yeah, I was just wondering, if people haven't got 15 cards for the Extra deck, can they borrow cards from here for today?'

Hannah smiled, and then made an announcement. 'Right, I want to make something clear. If anybody needs to borrow cards from here for their Extra decks, they have 10 minutes to do so starting now.' As she said that, both Mike and Emma, along with Kenzie, went and picked out cards to make their decks better. Once they had, Mike and Emma returned to the duel field, and after finishing their additions, they shook hands in the centre of the field as camera flashes went off. 'Mike, as the higher ranked duellist, you can choose whether to go first or second.' He just nodded. 'I'll go first if you don't mind.' 'Mike Rawlis vs. Emma Clarke, begin.'

Arena Finals 2: (10) Emma Clarke LP:8000 vs. (9) Mike Rawlis LP:8000

Turn 1: Mike: 'I'll start by activating Chicken Game's effect on the field to pay 1000 Life points (Mike LP:8000-7000), and draw a card. Then I'll set a monster, set two back here and pass.'

Emma: 'I draw. I'll activate Reasoning. You probably know it, so I'll condense - you pick a level, I excavate until I find a Normal summonable Monster, and unless it's the same level that you picked, I summon the monster.' 'Yeah, I'm picking 1. I've got a particular card in mind.' Emma then excavated (Void Seer, Void Imagination, Infernoid Onuncu, Future Fusion, Infernoid Decatron). 'Lucky hit - Decatron is Level 1.' 'I know, that's what I wanted to see. I'll activate D.D. Crow from my hand to banish Decatron from the graveyard.'

'Yeah, good move. I'll banish Infernoid Antra and Harmadyk from my hand to Special summon Infernoid Attondel (Atk:2800). Attondel, attack.' Mike looked at his set cards, but opted to not respond, instead letting the fearsome Attondel roast his monster with a fearsome fireball (Sangan Def.:1000). 'When Sangan goes to the graveyard, I can grab a monster from my deck with 1500 or less Attack. I choose Ancient Gear Box. And because Box was added to my hand, I can add Ancient Gear Gadget.'

'No problem to me, Attondel can attack again.' 'There's no point - Chicken Game stops the person who's behind from taking damage. Did you not read it?' 'No.' Emma then signalled for a timeout, which Hannah rolled her eyes at. 'Emma, you can have exactly three minutes to read the card. Although I would like to point out for everyone else, you should be doing this before the duel.'

With the card now officially read, Emma continued with the duel. 'I'll use Chicken Game to pay 1000 Life points (Emma LP:8000-7000), and draw a card. Which I'll set and pass turn.'

Mike: 'I draw. I'll use Chicken Game again to pay 1000 (Mike LP:7000-6000), and draw a card. Then I'll activate Upstart Goblin, to draw a card by giving you 1000 Life points (Emma LP:7000-8000). Now I summon Ancient Gear Hunting Hound (Atk:1000).' 'It's not much to look at.' 'Are you still going to be saying that when you lose 600 Life points?' Hunting Hound shot a small ball of fire itself, chipping Emma's boosted points away (Emma LP:8000-7400).

'Now I'll use Hunting Hound's effect, to fuse it with the Ancient Gear Hydra in my hand to Fusion summon Ancient Gear Howitzer (Atk:1000). And the effect of Howitzer deals you 1000 damage.' Howitzer shot out a series of sparks from its wheels, dropping Emma's points closer to his own (Emma LP:7400-6400). 'I end my turn.'

Emma: 'Why would you be summoning it in Attack mode? I draw. We'll go again - Reasoning.' 'Same again, I'll pick Level 1.' 'Here we go then.' Emma started digging, and this time dropped a number of cards (Infernoid Seitsemas, Infernoid Attondel, Infernoid Devyaty, Void Feast, Rekindling, Infernoid Devyaty, Magical Stone Excavation, Clear Vice Dragon). 'Clear Vice Dragon can be Normal summoned, and it isn't Level 1, so I can summon it (Atk:?). There's a good reason you didn't hit Decatron - I've got it right here (Atk:500). And the effect of Decatron allows me to send an Infernoid from my deck to the grave to increase its Level by that of the sent monster. I'll send Infernoid Pirmais (Decatron Level:1-2).'

Emma then made her move. 'Now I'll tune Level 2 Decatron to Level 8 Clear Vice Dragon.' As the number 10 flashed up on the screens, her monster made its appearance. 'I summon Dragocytos Corrupted Nethersoul Dragon (Atk:4000).' This on its own was a mighty fine boss, but Emma wasn't quite done. 'Now I'll activate a little something you saw earlier - Rekindling. This summons any number of Fire monsters from my grave that have exactly 200 Defence points.'

'But you're not running Lavals or Flamvells or anything like…' It was this moment that the penny dropped for Mike. 'Decatron has 200 Defence (Atk:500)x2.' 'Too right. And now, I'll double tune Level 10 Dragocytos with two Level 1 Decatrons. I Synchro summon Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity (Atk:4000).' 'Yeah, pretty big.' 'The effect's pretty big as well - for the rest of the turn, your field is now frozen - you can't activate any effects or respond to this effect.'

This would have caused major panic for a lesser opponent. But Mike stayed as solemn and calm as ever, looking at his Life points with an ice-cool demeanour. 'You've certainly painted me into a corner here.' 'I'll do more than that when I banish Infernoids Pirmais, Attondel and Seitsemas from my graveyard to summon Infernoid Devyaty (Atk:2900). It's about time that King Calamity demonstrated his rule.' The hulking Level 12 Synchro smashed straight through Howitzer with two powerful earthquakes causing the Ancient Gear to crumble away. 'Due to Chicken Game I'm safe. Your points are still 400 higher than mine.'

'So that damage you did last turn, you could have done more?' 'Maybe.' 'Well since I can't damage you here, I'll pay 1000 Life points with Chicken Game in MP2 to give you 1000 more Life points (Emma LP:6400-5400, Mike LP:6000-7000). Then I'll end my turn.'

Mike: 'I draw.' 'Chicken Game won't help you here.' 'This might though - Soul Charge. I'll pay 3000 Life points to revive Ancient Gears Howitzer, Hunting Hound, and Box (Atk:1000, 600, 500, Mike LP:7000-4000). Then I'll use Howitzer's effect to burn 1000 of your points off.' Mike's plan seemed to be taking shape as he trimmed another 1000 points away from his opponent, but Emma still looked confident (Emma LP:5400-4400). What came next stunned her though.

'Now I'll use Hunting Hound's effect to fuse the three monsters on my field with the Ancient Gear Golem in my hand, and summon the greatest of all the Ancient Gear fusions. Shoot 'em up, Chaos Ancient Gear Giant (Atk:4500).' 'That's bigger than King Calamity though.' 'Well you can add up that's for sure. But can you subtract? Because Chaos Giant is going to be doing that pretty quickly when it attacks every monster on your field.' 'Don't tell me I should have summoned Devyaty in Defence.' Looking at Devyaty's 2900 Defence stat, Mike broke into a brief smile. 'It wouldn't have made a difference. Chaos Giant, obliterate her field with Plasmatic Apocalypse!' The sharp-shooting Giant blasted massive holes into King Calamity with its plasma gun, and then dismantled Devyaty entirely in a gruesome scene (Emma LP:4400-2300). 'That's enough for one turn. Go ahead and do your worst.'

Emma: 'You know, I thought you had me for a moment. But I survived.' 'Trust me, you won't be surviving past the next two turns. I'll pay 1000 with Chicken Game to draw. Then I'll activate Void Vanishment to search for a copy of Void Imagination. Now I'll activate Void Imagination, and immediately send it to the graveyard to Fusion summon an Infernoid Fusion monster. I'll fuse all 10 Infernoids in my graveyard to Fusion summon Infernoid Tierra (Atk:3400). And when I do, I can activate various effects depending on the amount of materials used in the summon.'

'So because it had at least 3 materials, we both send three cards from our Extra decks to the graveyard. Because it had at least 6 materials, we both send the top 3 cards of our decks to the graveyard. Because it had at least 8 materials we both return up to three of our banished monsters to the graveyard. And because it had a full 10 materials, we both send our entire hands to the graveyard.' 'Yeah, you can take the full one card from my hand (Machine Duplication).' Emma then sent her hand to the graveyard (Infernoid Onuncu, Void Seer, Rekindling).

'Now I'll flip up my face-down Shield and Sword, to flip the Attack and Defence stats of our monsters (Tierra Atk:3400-3600, Giant Atk:4500-3000). Tierra, attack with Satanic Firestorm.' At this moment, Mike made a calculated gamble. 'I underestimated you Emma. I didn't think it would actually come to this.' 'To what?' 'I activate my own Set card - Cross-Dimensional Duel. It banishes my Giant until the next Standby phase.' 'Well that blows. I'll just attack for 3600 then.' Mike willingly took the massive hit, seemingly just to protect his monster (Mike LP:4000-400). 'I'll pass the turn.'

Mike then had his final surprise as he drew for turn. 'During my Standby phase, Chaos Ancient Gear Giant returns.' 'Yeah, I know.' 'With its Attack doubled.' Emma's jaw dropped hearing this, and the massive Iron Giant returned, now sporting a massively elevated Attack stat (Atk:9000).' 'I… can't compete with that.' 'I know. And for turn, I drew Limiter Removal. You know what that does? It doubles the attack of a Machine!' By this point, the Giant's Attack was at a preposterous level (Atk:9000-18000). 'Chaos Ancient Gear Giant, ANNIHILATE!' The Giant took one step, one shot, and blew Tierra's head off (Emma LP:2300-0).

With Mike having made it 2-2 for the favourites, he was clearly enthused by his victory. Emma took the loss well however, and immediately went to shake Mike's hand. 'Good duel.' 'Yeah, you're not too shabby. Tell you what - you smooth out that deck a bit, you're going to be real good.' 'That last move was awesome though.' 'I put that in as a joke - Donny dared me that I couldn't win with 41 cards. So he now owes me a couple of Jacksons.' 'Sorry, what?' Blair then shouted out. 'He means $40.' 'Ah ok thanks.'

As they exited, Phil had a quiet word with Donny about breaching the rules regarding betting in the arena, while Mike slapped hands with him before sitting back down. Donny then stretched his legs out. 'This will be no sweat, I'm gonna destroy anyone who faces me.' Phil nearly broke into a smile at this. 'It's good to hear your confidence Donny, especially bearing in mind that you're up next. I was going to call a timeout before this duel, but since you're apparently going to win so quickly. So can we have Mitch Travis and Donny Anderson in the duel field please?'

As they stepped in, Donny looked over at Rio, but seeing her stare into space, decided that flirting with her wasn't the best idea. Instead, he shuffled his deck several times, trying unsuccessfully to put Mitch off. Instead, Mitch took his time over remaking his deck. A very long time. Long enough for Hannah to give him a nudge in terms of speeding up. Around 15 minutes after he started, he was officially warned.

'Mitch, we all have homes to go to. If you aren't ready in 5 minutes, you will forfeit the duel.' This warning was enough to get Mitch to hurry up, and around 3 minutes after, he was finally ready. Donny mumbled 'If that's the way you want to play it', and looked over at Phil. 'I'll go first.' 'I respect your desire to get going Donny, but it's actually Mitch's decision. First or second?' Looking Donny right in the eye, Mitch stated 'I'm going first.' Phil then withdrew, and the duel began.

Arena Finals 3: (8) Donny Anderson LP:8000 vs. (7) Mitchell Travis LP:8000

Turn 1: Mitch: 'I'm going first.' 'Yeah, you already said.' 'Shut it. I'll activate Reinforcement of the Army, to add Infernoble Knight Astolfo.' 'Hand that bad that you need to Rota immediately?' 'This hand is anything but bad. I summon Infernoble Knight Oliver (Atk:1000). Then I'll banish Evocater Chevalier from my hand to Special summon Infernoble Knight Astolfo (Atk:500). When Astolfo is summoned through his own effect, he copies the Level of the banished monster (Level:1-4). And because I control a Fire attribute Warrior, I can Special summon a 3rd guy - Infernoble Knight Renaud (Atk:500).'

'And to keep up the pressure, I'll also activate Card of Demise. This draws me three cards, but I can't deal any damage this turn. One I just drew is Synchronized Realm. So whenever I Synchro summon, you take 500 damage. Now Level 1 Renaud, tune Level 4 Oliver to Synchro summon Ignoble Knight of High Laundsallyn (Atk:2100). I use the effect of Laundsallyn to take Infernoble Arms - Hauteclere, and equip it to him.' Laundsallyn saw the axe-like weapon, and immediately grasped it. 'I'll set two and pass back.'

Donny: 'I draw. I'll summon Unchained Twins - Rakea (Atk:1500). Then I'll activate Unchained Twins - Aruha in hand, to summon himself by destroying Rakea (Atk:1500).' 'Not exactly much of an upgrade. Unless you're more into buff guys with gauntlets that is…' 'Yeah, you can laugh. But you're about to see the terror of my deck. When Rakea is destroyed, she summons any Unchained monster from my hand or deck.' After much searching, he found the monster he wanted.

'How about you meet Unchained Soul of Disaster (Atk:0). And because a monster on my field was destroyed through a card effect, I'll also summon Abominable Unchained Soul (Atk:3000). Because he was Special summoned, Abominable Unchained Soul can destroy one monster you control. Say arrivederci to Astolfo!' The Abominable soul fired two blasts of electricity, which completely obliterated the Knight.

'Didn't fancy destroying my Laundsallyn then?' 'Why should I do that when I can use the Unchained Soul of Disaster? It allows me to Link summon using only it and one of your monsters. So I'll use Laundsallyn thanks, and Link summon, Link 2, Unchained Soul of Rage (Atk:1800, Link Arrows: ). 'Well I might not have any monsters left, but you sent Laundsallyn to the graveyard. Which means you sent Infernoble Arms: Hauteclere to the grave. And when you do that, I can destroy a monster on the field myself. Say goodbye to Abominable Unchained Soul.' The sword of Hauteclere re-emerged from the grave, and fired, flaming into the Unchained Soul, removing it from the field.

'Well I can still attack you. Get ready for the big 18 hit.' With no more interaction, Mitch had to stand there and take the attack from the Soul of Rage (Mitch LP:8000-6200). 'I'll set one card and pass the turn. During the End phase, Abominable Unchained Soul revives itself (Atk:3000). Good luck… matey.'

Mitch: 'You're starting to get kind of annoying. I draw. I'll activate my face-down card Descending Lost Star. With it I can revive a Synchro monster from my graveyard, but its effects are negated, its Defence drops to 0, and it drops one Level. Return, Ignoble Knight of High Laundsallyn (Def.:900-0, Level:5-4). Then I summon Motivating Captain (Atk:400). And when he's Normal summoned, he can revive a Level 4 or below Warrior from my grave. I choose Infernoble Knight Oliver (Atk:1000). Now Level 4 Oliver, tune Level 4 Laundsallyn and Level 1 Motivating Captain! I Synchro summon the leader of the Infernoble Knights, Infernoble Knight Emperor Charles (Atk:3000, Donny LP:8000-7500).'

'Charles, attack Unchained Soul of Rage with Searing Sword.' Charles' sword flared up violently, as he seared straight through the Soul of Rage, simply melting it (Donny LP:7500-6300). 'I'll end my turn. During the End phase, Charles can equip Hauteclere from my graveyard, and then equip Infernoble Knight Oliver from my deck, giving it 500 more Attack (Atk:3000-3500). Then Charles can destroy your Abominable Unchained Soul.'

Charles swung a mighty flaming blade again, and plunged it deep into the heart of the Soul, frying it in front of a clearly frustrated Donny. 'Why you… when Abominable Unchained Soul is destroyed after being summoned through its effect, it goes to the bottom of my deck.' 'Why don't you go ahead and show me what I'm missing? Because from where I'm standing, you just used your one trick, and it failed.'

Donny: 'Oh I've got more tricks where that one came from. I draw. I'll pay 1000 with Chicken Game to draw one (Donny LP:6300-5300).' 'Chicken Game, sounds about right for you.' Seeing what Mitch was saying, Donny turned up the mind games. 'How about this - if you're not chicken, you tell me what that Oliver does. I'm guessing he's not just 500 Attack.'

Mitch took the opportunity to stick the knife in. 'Only a chicken would ask. But sure, Charles can't be destroyed by card effects.' This was a mistake though. 'I'm a man of my word - I'm Donny Anderson and I'm a chicken. And you're about to lose to a chicken! I activate my face-down Premature Burial, to revive Unchained Soul of Rage (Atk:1800). Then I'll activate The Shallow Grave! So we both get to Special summon a monster face-down from our respective graveyards.' 'Sure, I'll summon High Laundsallyn.' 'And I'll revive Unchained Twins - Rakea.'

Little did Mitch know that Donny had just set his masterplan into motion. 'I'll activate the effect of Unchained Soul of Disaster. It allows me to Link summon using itself and a Special summoned monster on your field. Including a face-down monster!' This took Mitch aback. 'You're kidding?' Donny though was now in the zone, a face twisted in menace. 'Would I? I'll use your Ignoble Knight and my own Unchained Soul of Disaster to Link summon! Link 3, Unchained Soul of Anguish (Atk:2400; Link Arrows: ).'

And then came the full fruit of the plan. 'I'm not done. Because Anguish can Link summon using itself and your face-up monster. Oliver prevents destruction, but it doesn't stop the monster being material. I'll link off my Link 3 Unchained Soul of Anguish and your Emperor Charles, so that I can summon the Unchained Abomination (Atk:3000; Link Arrows: ).'

Getting cocky, Donny then extended even further. 'Now I activate Premature Burial to pay 800 Life points (Donny LP:5300-4500), and revive Soul of Anguish (Atk:2300). Now I'll attack directly.' The two Unchained Souls broke free from their shackles and surged straight at Mitch, dropping his points dangerously close to the bottom (Mitch LP:6200-900). 'I'll end my turn.'

Mitch: 'I draw. I'll activate Descending Lost Star, which will revive High Laundsallyn, but reduces its Level by 1 and drops its Attack to 0 (Atk:2100-0, Level:5-4). And he'll ride alongside Infernoble Knight Oliver (Atk:1000). And Level 4 Oliver can tune to Level 4 Laundsallyn! I Synchro summon the ace in the hole, Colossal Fighter (Atk:2800).'

'Colossal Fighter gets 100 Attack points for any Warriors that happen to be in either graveyard.' 'You won't find any in my graveyard, all Fiends.' 'Well I have 10, so that takes him way up (Atk:2800-3800). Attack Unchained Abomination with Power Pummell.' The fierce Warrior slammed the dog-like figure of the Abomination repeatedly, destroying it (Donny LP:4500-3700). 'I activate The Grave of Enkindling, forcing us both to revive a monster from our graveyards as long as it's Level 6 or lower. I'll bring back Rakea (Def.:1500).' 'I'll revive Captain Oliver (Def.:500). Then I end my turn, setting two.'

Donny: 'I draw.' As he looked at the card, he grinned. 'This one's through! I activate Giant Trunade, to return all Spells and Traps to the hand. Then I'll activate Premature Burial again, paying 800 (Donny LP:3700-2900), to revive Unchained Abomination (Atk:3000).' 'You still can't hurt me.' 'Wait a moment, because our difference in points is exactly 2000. Meaning I can use Chicken Game to pay 1000 Life Points to force you to gain 1000 (Donny LP:2900-1900, Mitch LP:900-1900). I had this set up all along.'

'Meaning you can damage me again.' 'Yep. Now I can use Rakea and Soul of Anguish for a Link summon, but this monster also lets me use your Colossal Fighter.' A black hole then appeared on the field, and out of it, a feminine figure emerged. 'I kept this little one quiet. Meet Link 5, Underworld Goddess of the Closed World (Atk:3000; Link Arrows: ). Underworld Goddess, attack Captain Oliver.' The Underworld Goddess emerged from her black hole and snatched Oliver, taking him back in with her, never to be seen again. 'Unchained Abomination, attack.' Abomination came charging in, slamming into Mitch's last points (Mitch LP:1900-0).

With the duel over, Donny laughed, and offered a handshake, which Mitch accepted, but a tense staredown ensued after following the heated clash. Eventually, Phil managed to get them away from each other. This was followed by a break in proceedings for lunch. As they did, it gave Jade chance to talk to Rio properly.

'So take it from the start - what happened yesterday?' 'You know, I really don't wanna talk about it right now. That's all anybody wants to discuss with me. Besides, you should focus on today.' Angered at the thought, Jade made an ultimatum. 'How about if you don't tell me exactly what's going on, I just quit right now.' Before anything else could be said, Blair pulled her back.

'What is it?' 'I don't think you're helping. You just focus on what you need to focus on now, and then I'm sure the three of us can discuss everything later on. But you need to leave everything out there, because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. So you just focus on yourself, ok? Keeping an eye on her is my job today.' Jade then left the arena for a short time to calm down, and Rio breathed a sigh of relief.

'Thanks B, couldn't deal with that today.' Blair though wasn't impressed. 'You owe her an apology. And an explanation.' 'I know, just… I don't want to talk about it now I don't want to be Rio with a terminal illness, I want to be Rio Kastle the person, you get me?' 'I do' her friend said, passing her a small clear pouch with a handful of ovular pills in them. 'What are they?' 'Throat lozenges. You sound like you've been smoking 20 a day.'

'Cheers. So last night was good?' 'Yeah, awesome.' 'Told you to go.' 'I know, but' 'No buts.' Blair then giggled. 'There was plenty of butts, don't worry.' 'I didn't say I wanted details.' 'You sure? There was butts, there was' Rio then stood up sharply. 'That's plenty thanks. If you wouldn't mind keeping your pillow talk to yourselves.' She then walked away, trying to find somewhere she was safe from awkward questions and lewd comments.

Arena Finals 4: (6) Kenzie Calhoun LP:8000 vs. (5) Denzil Davis LP:8000

Turn 1: Kenzie: 'I'll start. I activate Allure of Darkness.' 'But you're doing that Lightsworn stuff right?' 'So?' 'Where you getting the Dark monsters from?' 'You'll see. I'll draw two, then banish Necroface from my hand. And because Necroface was banished, we both banish the top 5 cards from our decks.' 'Sure, but what are you up to man?' 'Now I'll summon Gren Maju De Eiza (Atk:?).' 'What the hell?' 'Gren Maju gains 400 Attack for every card I've got banished, which is six (Atk:2400). I'll end my turn with a pair of face-downs.'

Denzil: 'I draw.' 'I activate Trap Trick. This allows me to banish a Trap card from my deck, and then set another copy of that card to my field, and it can be activated this turn. I choose The Huge Revolution is Over, and set it to my field. Plus the banished one is another 400 Attack for Gren Maju (Atk:2800).' 'Yeah, nice job man. I summon Karakuri Ninja "Sazank" (Atk:1200). Then I'll activate the effect of Karakuri Bonze "Kunamzan" in my hand to change Sazank's battle position (Def.:1200), and summon itself as a Tuner (Atk:2000). This means Kunamzan can tune Sazank for a Synchro 8.' 'Bureido?' 'You got it girl (Def.:1700).'

'Then I'll use Karakuri Cash Cache. This changes Bureido to Attack mode (Atk:2800), and adds a Level 4 Karakuri to my hand. I choose Karakuri Watchdog "Saizan". This draws me a card from Bureido. Then I'll activate Double Summon to bring it out (Atk:800). I'll go to battle and Saizan can clash with Gren Maju.' Confused, Kenzie giggled. 'Erm sure?' Saizan fired shots from its two back cannons, which bounced off of Gren Maju (Denzil LP:8000-6000).

'You do realise there's easier ways of getting your Life points down for Chicken Game, right Denz?' 'Yeah, that was nothing to do with that. Saizan can't be destroyed in battle, and when I take damage like that, all Karakuris gain 800 more Attack for the turn (Saizan Atk:800-1600, Bureido Atk:2800-3600). Bureido, it's slicing time!' Kenzie though, was a step ahead. 'I activate Zero Gravity. This changes the battle position of every monster on the field (Gren Maju Def.:2800, Saizan Def.:1800, Bureido Def.:1700).' 'Always a step ahead. I end my turn.'

Kenzie: 'I draw. I use Chicken Game to lose 1000 so you gain 1000 (Kenzie LP:8000-7000, Denzil LP:6000-7000). Now I summon Lumina, Twilightsworn Shaman (Atk:1000). With her effect, I can banish Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter from my hand to summon a Lightsworn from my Banished pile. How about Felis, Lightsworn Archer (Atk:1100). Then I'll tune Level 4 Felis to Level 3 Lumina, and Synchro summon Lightning Warrior (Atk:2400). Lightning Warrior, destroy Saizan.' The electrifying warrior zapped Saizan's circuits with a powerful blast, knocking it out for the count. 'And because it did that, Lightning Warrior now shocks you by 300 points for every card in your hand. I count five (Denzil LP:7000-5500).'

'And now, Gren Maju can take out your Bureido.' Despite putting its swords up in defence, Bureido was no match for flames spewed by the bizarre creature on Kenzie's field. 'I'll set another two and pass.' Denzil then smiled at her. 'You know, you're pretty good. Like, I probably shouldn't compliment someone who's supposed to be my enemy or sumit, but like, you've improved tenfold.' This seemed to embarrass the Scot slightly, as she gently played with her ponytail. 'Thanks, it's nice of you to say. Don't mean I'll take it any easier on you though.'

'Take it easy on me? That'd suggest you'll win.' 'Yeah? And why won't I?' 'Why don't you end your turn and see? Come on kid, pass it to me, see how scary being behind can be.' 'As long as you don't start rapping we're fine. But go ahead Denzil, if you think that you can beat me, give it your best shot, feel free.' 'Hey, you're gettin' it! Ready to enter into my pit? When I'm teaching, you watch and sit!'

Denzil: 'Yo, your skill might be higher than your hair, but I don't care, because your little daydream is about to become a nightmare! And when push comes to shove and everything comes to bare, you'll be beaten, good and fair, as I stand above you lay down right there! I draw. Hey, you might not think Allure is for the poor, but you hold the door and I'll show you that drawing two ain't no chore, so I can put you on the floor!

After banishing Black Salvo with the effect of Allure, he got to work. 'I'll summon Karakuri Gama "Shirokunishi" (Atk:200). Then I'll Magical Stone Excavation, discarding two to add back Double Summon from my grave. I'll activate it now, to summon Black Salvo (Atk:100). And he revives Karakuri Ninja "Kuick" (Atk:1800). Now I'll tune Level 3 Black Salvo to Level 4 Kuick, and summon Karakuri Shogun "Burei" (Atk:2600). And he hates travelling alone.' 'Alone? You've literally got another monster on the field already!'

'Yeah, well he likes as much company as he can get. Point is, when he's sumoned he suons another Karakuri from my deck.' 'Surely if he wanted more company he'd fill up your field, right?' Kenzie's logic was tying Denzil's brain in knots at this point. 'You know what, forget it.' 'What, you're not activating his effect?' 'Just shut up will ya! I'm activating Burei's effect to summon Karakuri Gama "Shirokunishi" (Atk:200). Then because you control a Level 5 or higher monster, I can summon Junk Giant (Atk:2400).'

'Now Level 1 Shirokunishi will tune to Level 6 Junk Giant, to Synchro summon into another Karakuri Shogun "Burei" (Atk:2600). And it summons a 3rd Shirokunishi from my deck (Atk:100). Now with the effect of my first Burei, I'll switch Bureido into Defence mode (Def.:1700). And with Bureido's effect, I get to draw a card because a Karakuri changed battle position. Now I'll synchro off the Burei I used the effect of with Shirokunishi, to summon out a second Bureido (Atk:2700).'

'When Bureido is summoned, I summon another Karakuri from deck. I summon Karakuri Ninja "Nanashick" (Atk:2200). Now I'll use the effect of the second Burei to switch Bureido back to Attack (Atk:2700), and that draws a card. Following?' Surprisingly, Kenzie was still focused. 'Right with ya.' 'Well now I'm going to Synchro off Bureido with my last Shirokunishi, to Synchro summon Karakuri Super Shogun "Bureibu" (Atk:3000).'

'Guess what his effect on summon is?' 'By any chance does he summon a guy from deck?' 'There in one. I'll grab Karakuri Barrel "Shinkuro" (Atk:400). Shinkuro now tunes Burei to summon a second Bureibu (Atk:3000). And just for good measure, he'll summon out Karakuri Muso "Haipa" (Atk:2100). I'll go to my Battle phase, and activate Karakuri Gold Dust. This switches one of my Bureibus to Defence mode (Def.:1500), and the other one gains its Attack (Atk:3000-6000). And now I have two Bureibu effects, both of which will banish one of your monsters.'

The two Level 9s reached out with magma-like hands, which eliminated Kenzie's monsters in an instant. 'Karakuri Bureibu, attack directly. Feel the steel now I'm at the wheel.' Bureibu charged with its swords crossed, slicing away Kenzie's points like they were nothing (Kenzie LP:7000-1000). Denzil seemed the more annoyed at that however. 'I shoulda won it there!' 'Yeah, I noticed, lucky escape.' 'See ya next turn.'

Kenzie: 'I draw. Because I have at least four Lightsworns banished, I can summon Punishment Dragon from my hand (Atk:3000). Then I can activate Twilight Twin Dragons.' 'Like, I've seen these cards, but this one's totally new on me.' 'What it does is add Judgement Dragon from my graveyard to my hand, and then send the top 4 cards from my deck to the graveyard.'

'I milled Wulf, Lightsworn Beast. When that happens, it summons itself (Atk:2100). And I'll also summon Jain, Twilightsworn General (Atk:1800). And I'll overlay both Jain and Wulf, to summon Minerva, the Exalted Lightsworn (Atk:2000).' 'Neat.' 'Even better when I use the effect of Minerva, by detaching a material. She can mill the top 3 cards from my deck, and then for every Lightsworn I mill, I can draw a card.'

Kenzie then took the trio of cards, and showed them to him. 'Two Lightsworns.' 'Yeah, it's the other card you're milling that I'm bothered about. You seriously running Good Goblin Housekeeping?' 'Yeah, why not?' 'Nutter.' 'Yeah, whatever, I get to draw two now. One of which is Rank-up Magic Astral Force, which ranks her up by two. Let's go - Rank-up Xyz Evolution! I Xyz summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal (Def.:2800).'

'Once per turn, Beatrice can detach a material to mill a card from my deck to the grave. I'll send Felis, Lightsworn Archer, which will then summon itself (Def.:2000). And by tributing Felis, I can destroy one copy of Bureibu.' Felis ran up to Bureibu, which clattered it, only for the Tuner to respond with a shining arrow, piercing the mighty Karakuri and felling it. 'Now I'll summon Judgement Dragon, because I have at least four Lightsworns in the graveyard (Atk:3000).' '4? 14 more like.' 'Yeah, well I only need four. Punishment Dragon, attack Bureibu.'

The Dragon and the Shogun had a fierce, heated clash as their controllers watched on, both with determined gazes, the young guns duelling for their lives. The clash ended with them both fading from existence. 'Now Judgement Dragon can attack your Bureido with Scorching Heaven!' The mighty Lightsworn-worshipped Dragon produced a burning light from the skies, which melted through the metallic Bureido (Denzil LP:5500-5200). 'I end my turn.'

Denzil: 'I draw. I'll activate Chicken Game to pay 1000 (Denzil LP:5200-4200), and draw a card. A card like Into the Void. So now I draw until my hand has 3 cards, but I have to ditch them all at the end of my turn. I'set three and pass.'

Kenzie: 'Here we go.' 'Yo, when you lose, don't feel depressed. It's just because this damn Field spell got suppressed. I activate World Suppression.' Kenzie, confused, immediately looked over at Phil for conformation. 'It's perfectly legal, Denzil actually emailed me about this yesterday. You can negate the field spell, you're just not allowed to remove it from the field.'

With this, Denzil started eyeing up Kenzie. 'I hope you like the Number 6, because losing to you would make me… sick.' 'Denz, that don't even rhyme and you know it.' 'What would you know about speaking English - you're Scottish.' 'We're part of the same country dumbass.' 'Not really, like I'm from Manchester, home of Oasis, canals, and railways, and you're from Scotland, home of… deep fried chocolate and whiskey. Anyway, I'm just gonna Ring of Destruction your Judgement Dragon.'

Seeing no way out, Kenzie opted for a desperate ploy. 'I'll activate Destruction Trigger. With this, when you destroy a monster on my field with a card effect, you'll take half its Defence as damage.' By the time Denzil worked out what was happening, it was too late to stop, as Judgement Dragon was obliterated, along with both players' Life points. (Kenzie LP:100-0, Denzil LP:4200-0).

As both of them took a breath, Denzil saw the scoreline, and rolled his eyes. 'Crap man. Shoulda had you.' Kenzie meanwhile, was trying to stop her hand trembling, and seeing this, Denzil offered some words of encouragement. 'You're tougher than you look Kenzie.' 'Thanks… hang on, what do you want?' 'Nothing, just to compliment you.' As the heartwarming exchange continued, Phil explained the next stage.

'Kenzie and Denzil, as you were unable to find a natural winner to your duel, you will now go to Sudden Death. You will both have your Life point totals reset to 2000 Life points (Kenzie LP:0-2000, Denzil LP:2000). From now on, Chicken Game is no longer active, and you may play a Field spell if you so wish. In Sudden Death, all effect damage is cut in half, no competitor may attack until the end and if one or both of you run out of cards in your decks, you may reshuffle five back into your deck. Any questions?'

Denzil immediately had one. 'Our fields, what's on 'em?' 'In the interests of fairness, your fields will start from scratch, however you will both be allowed to draw to six cards. When I finish speaking, you will have three minutes to side cards into your deck. At the end of the three minutes, you must rescan your decks to ensure they are still legal.' As he withdrew, Denzil immediately rushed to the back of the arena to adjust his deck. Kenzie however, didn't move.

Eventually, a curious Jade walked over to her. 'Hey, are you ok?' 'Fine, totally.' 'Why aren't you side-decking?' 'Because my deck's working better than I ever expected.' 'Well that's a good sign.' 'Anyway, haven't you got enough of your own issues to take care of? Seriously, go.' With that, Jade promptly did go away, leaving Kenzie to quietly prepare herself mentally.

Everyone thought that the moment Denzil returned, the peace would be shattered. However, he instead seemed somewhat subdued. After a brief stare-off, Phil stepped between them. 'If you're both ready, let Sudden Death begin!' He stepped aside, and they resumed their duel.

Sudden Death: Kenzie Calhoun LP:2000 vs. Denzil Davis LP:2000

Turn 1: Denzil: 'I'm up. I'll set up Karakuri Anatomy, then summon Karakuri Ninja "Sazank" (Atk:1200). Then I'll use the effect of Karakuri Bonze "Kunamzan" in my hand, switching Sazank to Defence (Def.:1200), and summon itself as a Tuner (Atk:2200, Anatomy Counters:1). Now I'll tune Level 5 Kunamzan and Level 3 Sazank, to Synchro summon Karakuri Steel Shogun "Bureido" (Atk:2800).'

'And when he's summoned, he gets another Karakuri from deck.' 'Not this time big boy. I'll discard this Effect Veiler to stop him from doing any of that.' With Bureido's abilities negated, Denzil looked for extenders to his plays. 'I'll activate Karakuri Cash Cache. I have to switch Bureido to Defence (Def.:1700), and add Karakuri Muso "Haipa" to hand. I'll end my turn with four sets.'

Kenzie: 'I draw. Charge of the Light Brigade fine?' 'Yeah man, whatever you want.' 'Cool. Top 3 of my deck goes to the grave, then I'll add Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner. And I just milled Felis, Lightsworn Archer, meaning I can summon him (Atk:1100). Now I'll summon Lumina (Atk:1000). And with her effect, I can discard Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior to revive that same Garoth.'

Denzil seemed dubious. 'Yo, this how it works?' 'Yes, we've been through this several times Denzil. As long as she has a valid target in the graveyard already, she can pitch a monster for cost and then revive that same monster. Kenzie' 'The other card was Ryko.' He nodded, and withdrew. 'Play is legal.' 'Sure man.'

'Right, I'll revive Garoth now (Atk:1850). Then I'll tune my Level 4 Felis to Level 4 Garoth, and Synchro summon Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon (Atk:3000). And when it's Synchro summoned, it flips over the top 5 from my deck, then I can add a Light or Dark monster from those to my hand.' 'Don't you mean "excavate"?' 'Yeah, can't say that word. Me accent makes it sounds all weird. You know how difficult it is to talk with a Scottish accent? Makes me sound totally drunk.'

'Are we sure you're not?' 'Erm, I don't drink? Like YOU KNOW THAT. It ain't like you've heard me say it loadsa times. You know what, whatever. Let's get flipping.' Kenzie then showed the five cards (Ryko, Twilightsworn Fighter, Light Spiral, Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior, Delinquent Duo, Magician of Faith). 'I'll add Garoth to my hand. The others go to the graveyard.'

'Then I'll send all your Set cards back to you with Giant Trunade. After that, I'll attack with Chaos Ruler.' Chaos Ruler released a purple orb, which exploded on contact with Bureido. 'And then Garoth can attack directly.' 'I'll summon Battle Fader, to end the Battle phase.' 'I end my turn with a face-down.'

At this stage, with the scores so close, Denzil got a microphone out of his pocket, and started dropping a beat. 'Yo, listen up, it's the notorious guy, your man Double-D, and I thought this was gonna be so ea-sy. But this little chick has a little bit of backbone, don't matter to me, ain't gonna knock me off my throne, 'cause this is arena finals day, even when winning feels like a world away, I ain't ever gonna fade away, no settling for another day'

Kenzie then interrupted him. 'I swear if you don't shut up, I'm going to shut you up!' Denzil though paid no attention. 'Cause me and my boys the Karakuris, we're not exactly in a hurry, there's no need to worry, cause we ain't fading away. And now we're on zero day, and there ain't no way, now we've entered the fray, that I'm losing now.' Denzil might have finished now, but he turned around and saw Kenzie beat-boxing herself. 'Nah chick, you're bluffing.'

She wasn't though, and soon enough, Freja grabbed Denzil's mic and threw it to the young Scot, who started to rap herself. 'Hey, Kenzie's the name, K-E-N-Z-I-E, and I kinda thought that we were all family, but here goes some clown who's rhymes make us all wanna move uptown, and he'd better be careful not to get mown down, because I'm just as good as he is, and I hope he got all his reinforcements flew in, because I'm gonna leave him in ruins.'

'You think I'm just a weird Scottish bird, well you're right, I never wanted to follow all the herd, I just wanna be me and being me means being a bit strange, but I'm showing my range, while you're just a sorry sight like a dog with mange, so if I'm a weird Scottish bird let me be that, some strange duelling nerd. Word!' This rapping made most of the arena applaud Kenzie's response.

Even Denzil seemed to enjoy it, judging by the way he was laughing afterwards. 'You're some kooky sh*t Kenzie, but I think I like it. Still gonna smash you though. I'll activate Monster Reincarnation, discarding one to add back Sazank. Then I'll summon Sazank (Atk:1200), and activate Cash Cache, to switch it to Defence (Def.:1200), to add Karakuri Strategist "Nishipashi" to my hand.'

'Now I activate Prevention Star. Because my Sazank switched to Defence mode this turn, I can stop your Chaos Ruler from attacking, as long as Sazank is equipped with this.' 'Well, there goes my plan.' 'And I ain't close to done. Not when I can send Karakuri Anatomy to the grave to draw two. And one of them was Card Destruction. We both discard two, then draw two.'

'Because I control a Karakuri, I can switch it to Defence mode (Def.:1200), and summon Karakuri Kunamzan (Atk:2200). Then I'll use Level Eater's effect in grave, reducing the Level of Kunamzan by one (Level:5-4), summoning Level Eater (Atk:100). That means I can tune my two monsters together.' 'Level 5? What five are you… I swear if you're playing Nat Beast I'm absolutely going to murder you!' 'Yo, can we check this chick for sharp objects? She's crazy man. Anyway, here's Naturia Beast (Atk:2200). I'll set four and end my turn, telling you good luck in winning without your Chaos Ruler or any Spells.'

Kenzie: 'I mean I'll give it a go. I'll draw, and because I have four or more Lightsworns in the grave, summon Judgement Dragon (Atk:3000).' 'I activate Deep Dark Trap Hole. Because you Specialed a Level 5 or higher monster, it's banished.' With her Dragon now far away, Kenzie looked for a chance to regroup. 'I'll throw down two and pass.'

Denzil: 'I draw. I activate Monster Reborn, to revive Bureido (Atk:2800). Then I'll switch Sazank to Defence (Def.:1200), That triggers my face-down Karakuri Trick House, which will destroy Chaos Ruler.' The departure of Chaos Ruler seemed to spell the end of the duel. 'Bureido, attack her directly.' 'I'll activate Enchanted Javelin.' 'I'll respond by activating Trap Jammer. And because its a Counter trap, you can't respond.'

Kenzie then looked long and hard at the other card. 'Unless I have a Counter trap of y own. I activate Solemn Judgement. For the low cost of half of my Life points, I can negate your Trap Jammer.' The chain then resolved, and Kenzie's Life points ended up going all over the place as the attack hit (Kenzie LP:2000-1000-3800-1000). She was still vulnerable though. That was until Kenzie revealed a surprise. 'Ever heard of a card called Gorz, the Emissary of Darkness?' 'Damn, you have that?' 'Yep (Atk:2700). The best thing is, I was a goner if you hadn't tried to negate my Javelin. Now I also get an Emissary Token, whose Attack and Defence equal the damage I took (Atk:2800).' 'I'll end my turn.'

Kenzie: 'I'll draw.' She looked at her cards, and made a bold decision. 'I'm going to win or I'm going to lose, but either way, I'm going to fight. I'm starting with Premature Burial. By paying 800 Life points (Kenzie LP:1000-200), I can revive Wulf, Lightsworn Beast (Atk:2100). And he's going to be joined by Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress (Atk:1700). Now if I switch Lyla to Defence mode (Def.:200), she can destroy one of your backrow cards. I'll choose the one on the left.' Denzil looked anxiously, as his face-down was destroyed (A Hero Emerges).

Seemingly delighted with the hit, Kenzie continued. 'Now for a Link summon!' 'You know how to Link summon?' 'Duh, I've known for ages. The summoning conditions are three monsters of the same Attribute but different Types. So I'll use Light monsters - my Beast-Warrior Wulf, Spellcaster Lyla, and Fairy-type Emissary Token to set the Link Arrows. You've not seen everything from me, not yet at least. Appear, Link 3, Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion (Atk:2400; Link Arrows: ).'

'Curious has an on summon effect.' 'That's a pretty… curious idea, if you don't mind me saying.' 'Not really, it's quite a common occurrence.' 'Yeah, I think you missed the joke.' 'Or maybe it just wasn't all that funny? Anyway, I'll activate Curious' effect to send another Wulf to my graveyard. Meaning I can then summon it (Atk:2100).' 'Where are you going with this?' With two cards left in her hand, Kenzie decided to risk it all.

'From my hand I activate the effect of Destrudo, the Lost Dragon's Frisson. It requires half of my Life points again (Kenzie LP:200-100), but allows me to summon Destrudo (Def.:3000). Then its Level is reduced by that of Wulf's (Level:7-3). Now I'll tune Level 3 Destrudo to Level 4 Wulf, to Synchro summon my own guardian angel - Michael, the Arch Lightsworn (Atk:2600).'

'So it comes down to the last card in your hand?' 'Yep, and it's a good one. First I'll take down your Naturia Beast with Michael.' The Dragon-riding angel opened his wings, and surrounded the Beast in them, bringing it to a peaceful looking demise (Denzil LP:2000-1600). 'In Main Phase 2, I'll activate Mage Power. For each Spell or Trap on my field, Michael gains 500 Attack.' 'Good job you only have one (Atk:2600-3100).' 'I end my turn, and hope it's enough.'

Denzil: 'I draw.' As he drew the card, he looked at the sky. 'You're f**king kidding man? Like, this seems so cheap now. Eh, I guess I've got a job to do. Sorry Kenz, I activate my face-down Forbidden Lance. It reduces Michael's Attack by 600 and stops it being affected by other Spells and Traps, which includes your own Mage Power (Atk:3100-2000). Then I'll summon Karakuri Muso "Haipa" (Atk:2100), and I'll take out the rest of your points.' After a tense sudden death, it was a lucky draw that saw Denzil win (Kenzie LP:100-0).

As the duel ended, he walked over to her immediately, and revealed how close she was. 'Yo Kenz, you know you hit A Hero Emerges?' 'Yeah?' 'If you hit the other one you won. I got Haipa off the top, I had no targets in hand.' 'Why did you set it then?' 'Bluffing, hoping you wouldn't attack. You gave me a real run there.' 'I felt like I was a step behind all the time. It's difficult chasing like that.' With that, they shook hands, and Denzil slapped his opponent on the back in a show of appreciation and respect.

As Denzil went to return to his seat, Jade prodded him. 'What's up?' 'I think my girlfriend wants to speak to you outside.' 'Uh, sure.' As he left the arena, Jade giggled with Brooke. 'Never knew how good it would be to say that.' 'I can't believe you've gone all soft.' 'I'm not soft! Whatever you think is going on with that, probably isn't.' Brooke though was on the wind-up. 'I swear, within six months you two will be sat on the sofa in matching pyjamas watching some gross rom-com and planning on joining the mile high club.' 'No, that was Phil and Hannah. Anyway missus, you've got a duel next haven't you?' 'Yep.'

'You… don't seem in the least bit nervous.' 'Oh I am, but I've got confidence in my deck. Myka's going to be super hot for this, in fact she's probably expecting to win. But this deck is ace, I got all the play ratios figured out, and I just went to a Locals the other day in Cardiff, and completely wiped the floor with everyone.' Jade was a little concerned with this confidence however.

'Just to check, you know you can't use Citadel right?' 'Yeah yeah, I didn't at Locals. Well, I mean I had one in the Side Deck, but that's just because I was still waiting on my 3rd copy of Magicalized Fusion arriving by post. Just watch, I'll be fine.'

Just then, Jade noticed something strange. 'Hey, what's that cast on your hand?' 'So you know I fell off my bike a few weeks ago?' 'Yeah?' 'Well the pain wasn't easing, so I went to my GP, and it turns out I fractured my hand a bit, and it wasn't quite healing, so they sent me to A&E and now I've got to wear a cast on it for the next month.' 'So how do you duel with it?' 'Easy, I can still use the hand. Just have to be a little careful.' 'You and careful don't go together.'

Outside

Denzil walked out of the back door, but seemed confused when there was nobody there. He looked around, and saw no sign of life. He waited around a moment, but there was no sign of anyone coming. He then turned to go back in, but saw Blair walking down as he did, and stopped in reverence, as she walked through the door, carrying a paper cup.

'You know you don't have to stand to guard like that don't you?' 'Sorry.' 'It's fine.' 'So you wanted to see me?' 'Yeah, wanted to say well done.' 'Thanks. That's the hardest f**king thing I've ever done, she just wouldn't go down. Come to think of it, reminds me of you a bit.' 'Does it?' 'Yeah, you know, never giving up, awesome defending, suddenly trying to kill me in one go?'

'Well now you put it that way, I guess it sounds a bit like my style. Anyway, I wanted to ask if you're available Monday afternoon?' 'Yeah, why?' 'I want to go through the duel with you, just see where you could improve.' 'Sounds awesome.' 'So I'll book the arena for about 12:15?' 'Make it 12:25?' 'Okay, I'll get that sorted tonight, then drop you an email.' 'Thanks.' 'No problem.'

Back in the arena

Just as Myka and Brooke entered the field, Maddy finally turned up, wearing sunglasses and a hood to disguise the fact that she hadn't been sleeping. Her arrival seemed to come as a major surprise to Freja however. 'Thought you and the Goddess weren't turning up?' Maddy's voice was different, hoarse, from excessive drinking. 'You know if she hears you saying that she'll bury her axe in your head?'

'Yeah, wouldn't be the first time she's tried that. So what gives?' 'Jana confiscated all my alcohol.' 'Mads, nobody believes that.' Freja then showed a picture of Jana on the beach. 'She's in Florida. Because her nagging you clearly didn't make a difference. Just admit it, you came because you want to see Madam put in her place.'

A smirk then spread across the psuedo-alcoholic's face. 'See, I knew it!' 'Some sister she is, ain't asked how I am once.' 'Well, you always got us. Just one thing though - could you maybe' 'Let me guess - stop drinking?' 'Not stop… maybe just ease up on it. Your breath stinks of cheap lager constantly and when you've had… about three cans I wanna say, you become impossible to talk to.' Maddy nodded and smiled, before sitting down gently.

Soon enough, Myka (who had overheard previous conversations about Maddy) stormed over. 'What are you doing here?' 'In case you need a reminder, I'm the Renegades' president. Which makes me co-owner of the arena.' 'Go home, you're a drunkard.' Maddy then produced a breathalyser, and breathed hard into it. 'Go on, read it out loud.' 'No.' 'I'll do it then - Zero. Now don't pretend you care about me.'

Myka then went to slap Maddy, but Freja, small but mighty, grabbed her arm. 'Haven't you got something better to do? If you do much as touch Maddy, you'll be leaving immediately.' Realising that this wasn't a joke, Myka turned around to face Brooke, who was waiting patiently. 'I think I'm going to take my frustrations out on you now!' 'Just try it.'

(4) Myka Grainger LP:8000 vs. (3) Brooke Angharad LP:8000

Turn 1: Brooke: 'I'll take the first turn.' 'By all means do.' 'I'll start by setting Scale 2 Servant of Endymion in my Pendulum Scale, and activate the Then I'll activate Spell Power Mastery. It allows me to add Reflection of Endymion to my hand, then place a Spell counter on Servant for every Mastery or Spell Power Grasp in my grave or on my field. And Servant a counter for every Spell card activated (Servant SC:0-2).'

'Now I'll set Scale 4 Mythical Beast Master Cerberus in the other Pendulum Scale (Servant SC:2-3). Servant's effect, because it has three Spell counters in the Pendulum zone, I can summon Servant and a monster from my deck which can hold a Spell Counter. I choose to summon itself and Endymion, the Mighty Master of Magic (Servant Atk:700, Endymion Atk:2700). In addition, they both get one Spell Counter (Servant SC:0-1, Endymion SC:0-1).'

'Master Cerberus' effect in the Pendulum Zone, because I have nothing in my other scale, I can destroy it to add Mythical Beast Jackal King to my hand. Then I'll scale up Scale 4 Jackal King, and immediately use its Pendulum effect because I control nothing in my other Scale, destroying itself to summon Master Cerberus back from the Extra deck (Atk:2800).'

'Now I can set Scale 2 Reflection of Endymion in my Pendulum scale, and activate Pot of Duality. This excavates the Top 3 cards of my deck, and then I add a card from my deck to my hand.' The three cards that she flipped were Upstart Goblin, Spell Power Grasp, and Dark Magician, the latter of which got a reaction out of Myka. 'Dark Magician? You absolute nerd.' Brooke didn't seem bothered by this though. 'I'll add Upstart Goblin (Reflection SC:0-1, Cerberus SC:0-2).'

'Then I'll activate Upstart Goblin, drawing a card but in exchange you get 1000 Life points (Myka LP:8000-9000, Reflection SC:1-2, Cerberus SC:2-4). Then I'll use the effect of Chicken Game, paying 1000 Life points to draw a card. Might as well use it while it's here (Brooke LP:8000-7000). I'll set both of these and end my turn.' As she did that, her turn clock ticked down to 0.

Myka: 'Jesus, thought that turn would never end. I draw. Let's get things started with Kozmo Tincan (Atk:0). And I'll use its effect to banish itself for Kozmo Dark Destroyer (Atk:3000). When Dark Destroyer is summoned, it can destroy a card on the field. How about that Endymion?' 'No can do I'm afraid, as long as he holds a Spell counter he's protected.'

'Fine, I'll take out Master Cerberus then.' 'I activate Breakthrough Skill. This negates the effects of Dark Destroyer this turn.' 'Great.' 'It gets better, because now Dark Destroyer can be targeted, meaning Master Cerberus can remove four Spell Counters from my field to banish your monster, and gain its Attack points until your turn ends (Atk:2800-5800). Then I'll immediately Ring of Destruction my Master Cerberus, but seeing as my Life is lower, only you will lose anything.' This well-crafted plan from Brooke was enough to see Myka's points get destroyed by the explosion (Myka LP:9000-3200).

Seeing where her points were, the Canadian made a gamble. 'I think I'm going to end my turn right there. Go on, damage me again, I dare you.'

Brooke: 'I draw. I'll use the effect of Chicken Game to draw a card (Brooke LP:7000-6000). Then I activate the effect of Magician's Souls in my hand. It allows me to send Dark Magician from my deck to the graveyard, and then I can send it to the graveyard to revive that Dark Magician (Atk:2500). Now I'll activate The Eye of Timaeus. With it, I can send Dark Magician to the graveyard to Fusion summon a monster who lists it as material. I Fusion summon the Dark Paladin (Atk:2900).'

'At least you've got no more cards in your hand so I don't have to watch you for another 20 minutes.' 'Who said I'm done? I activate my face-down Spell Power Mastery.' 'You drew two of them?' 'Yep, two in my opening hand. I'll add the Rogue of Endymion to my hand, and then place the Spell Counters on Endymion himself (Endymion SC:1-3, Reflection SC:2-3). And now I can use the effect of Reflection in my Pendulum zone.'

As Myka glared evils at her Welsh opponent, Reflection appeared on the field, along with the Rogue (Reflection Atk:1850, Rogue Atk:1500). When Rogue is summoned, he gets a Spell Counter (SC:0-1). But I can immediately remove that counter to set a Continuous Spell card directly from my deck.' A full minute then followed with Brooke debating her options, leading to a frustrated Myka appealing to Hannah. 'Seriously, how long is she allowed to keep doing this?'

'Doing what exactly?' 'Taking so long with her turn!' 'You've got three minutes per turn. Brooke still has half a minute left to complete her turn. Incidentally, the timer has been frozen while this dispute is going on.' 'She's taking an eternity on every turn.' 'There is a time limit Myka. If she goes over the time limit, her turn will be ended immediately.' 'And how would we even know?'

By now Hannah was starting to get frustrated. 'There is a buzzer that goes off when the time limit has been reached. This information was all included in the rules we sent you all. Now if you don't mind, could you stop moaning and let Brooke continue with her turn? We all have homes to go to.' Reluctantly, Myka stopped complaining. 'The Spell which I searched is Arcane Barrier. So I'll set that, and then I'll pass.'

Myka: 'I draw. I activate Emergency Teleport, to summon Kozmo Farmgirl from my deck.' 'Endymion effect, I can return a card to the hand that has a Spell Counter on it, to negate your Spell. I'll return Servant to hand. Then it's one Spell Counter transfers to another card on the field. I'll choose Endymion (SC:1-2).' 'Luckily I have Kozmo Wickedwitch in my hand (Atk:1900). And she can banish herself to summon Kozmo Dark Eclipser (Atk:3000).'

'Dark Eclipser, attack Endymion, the Mighty Master of Magic.' The Level 9 Kozmo shot purple lasers from its tapered and streamlined front, shooting straight through Endymion (Brooke LP:6000-5800). But again, Brooke had a surprise. 'When Endymion falls in battle while it has a Spell Counter, I can add any Normal Spell from my deck to my hand.' Again, the choice took around a minute, before she found what she wanted. 'I'll add Card of Demise.' 'I'll set one and pass.'

Brooke: 'I draw. I'll start with flipping up Arcane Barrier and activating Spell Power Grasp. This puts a Spell Counter on a card on the field. I'll pick Arcane Barrier (SC:0-1). Then I can add a Spell Power Grasp to my hand. Now I activate Card of Demise, to draw until I have three cards in hand, however at the end of the turn I have to discard my hand. And I drew Spell Power Mastery. This places three Spell Counters on my Arcane Barrier, to where it maxes out at four counters (SC:1-4). I also get to add Endymion, the Master Magician to my hand.'

'Because Arcane Barrier has Spell Counters, I can send it and Rogue of Endymion to my graveyard, in order to draw a card for every Spell Counter my Barrier had. So I'm drawing another four cards.' 'How are you not out of cards yet?' '58 card deck. Anyway, I'll set Scale 2 Servant of Endymion in my Pendulum scale, and activate Pot of Avarice, which shuffles five monsters back into my deck from my graveyard, then draws me two (Servant SC:0-1).'

'I'll summon Silent Magician LV4 (Atk:1000), and activate Mystical Bestiary. This mills two from the top of my deck, and in return, I can give two Spell Counters to Silent Magician. By the way, it gains 500 Attack for each Spell counter it has (Silent Magician SC:0-2, Atk:1000-2000, Servant SC:1-2). Then I'll activate Hidden Armoury, discarding a card to add Power of the Guardians to my hand. I'll set three' At that exact moment, the buzzer to signify time went off, and she discarded the remainder of her hand due to Card of Demise.

Myka: 'I draw.' 'Because you drew, Silent Magician gains another Spell Counter and 500 Attack points (Atk:2000-2500) I'll pay 1000 Life points with the effect of Chicken Game to draw a card (Myka LP:3200-2200). Then I'll banish Kozmo Dark Eclipser and Kozmo Sliprider in order to summon the mighty Kozmo Dark Planet (Atk:4000). With Dark Planet on the field, I can infinitely negate Spell cards by banishing a Kozmo from my graveyard each time. Dark Planet, attack Silent Magician LV4.'

'I activate Wall of Revealing Light. With this, I can pay any amount of Life points to prevent your monsters with less Attack points from attacking. I'll pay 5000 points (Brooke LP:5800-800).' 'I end my turn with a face-down.'

Brooke: 'I draw. I'll just pass my turn thanks.'

Myka: 'I draw. I'll set one and pass, since I can't attack and you clearly don't want to.'

Brooke: 'My draw.' It was this draw where Brooke saw her vision. 'I think it's time. I'll start by activating Magicalized Fusion.' 'I'll activate the effect of Kozmo Dark Planet, to banish Kozmo Dark Destroyer from my graveyard and negate the effect.' 'I'll counter with The Transmigration Prophecy. It returns Dark Destroyer and Dark Eclipser to your deck. And now your target's gone, you can't negate my Fusion card. I'll fuse Dark Magician and Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, to Fusion summon Dark Cavalry (Atk:2800).'

'Cavalry gains 100 Attack for every Spell in the graveyard.' She then looked over to Hannah. 'Any chance of the clock being paused while I count these?' 'No need, we can count them for you on the system. Myka has 1, and Brooke, you have 17. So that's 1800 Attack points (Atk:4600).' 'Thanks. Then I'll activate Power of the Guardians.' 'I'll negate again.' 'This time I activate Sealing Ceremony of Raiton. By returning Servant of Endymion to the bottom of my deck, I can banish the other Kozmos from your graveyard.'

With no more negates, Brooke went for the big finale. 'Now I activate Secret Scrolls of the Citadel. This moves every Spell Counter on the field to one card, and I choose Power of the Guardians. For each Counter, PotG gives Cavalry 500 more Attack points. I count 7 counters on the field (Atk:4600-8100). Dark Cavalry, attack Kozmo Dark Planet!' The infernal Cavalry rolled in, and speared through the mighty Dark Planet with little effort, ending the contest convincingly (Myka LP:2200-0).

As the duel ended, Myka continued to complain to Hannah about Brooke's slow pace, to no avail. Meanwhile Brooke celebrated winning, and went back to her seat without even bothering to offer a handshake, a handshake which most certainly would not have been accepted. Several minutes of arguing ended with Myka storming out of the arena.

Several minutes of tension then followed, as the preparations for the final duel began. The lights were dimmed, the scoreboards were reset, and as per the request of both Jade and Belle, Chicken Game was deactivated. Eventually, both girls were called up to the duelling zone by Phil.

'And now for the final duel, the championship match. May I ask Belle and Jade to enter the field of play.' The two walked into the field, and both shuffled their decks. Jade then re-tied her shoelaces, and smiled at Blair, while Belle looked over at Phil who stared on sternly. They met in the centre, and Jade offered a handshake, but Belle just stared at the hand, before walking off to her end. 'Belle, as you were top of the course, you get to choose who goes first.' 'She can.' He then stepped away, and they began.

Arena Finals Championship Round: (2) Jade Goocheneyad LP:8000 vs. (1) Belle Draper LP:8000

Turn 1: Jade: 'I start. I'll summon Abyss Actor Sassy Rookie (Atk:1700). Then I'll set three and pass.'

Belle: 'I won't let this get away from me. I draw! I activate Summoner's Art, which allows me to add a Normal monster to my hand, so long as its Level is 5 or higher. I choose Qliphort Monolith. Then I'll set Pendulum Scales with Scale 1 Qliphort Monolith and Scale 9 Qliphort Scout, and use Scout's Pendulum effect. I pay 800 Life points (Belle LP:8000-7200), and add Qlife's End to my hand.'

'Now I'll Pendulum Summon for two - I summon Level 6 Qliphort Helix and Level 8 Qliphort Stealth. But because they weren't Tribute summoned, their Levels become 4, and their Attack becomes 1800 (Atk:1800)x2. Now I tribute them both to summon Qliphort Shell (Atk:2800). Because of Shell being Tribute summoned, it's unaffected by the effects of monsters lower than its current Level. Now attack Sassy Rookie.' The Shell spun up to speed, and released a barrage of spiked shards at the Rookie, which dug its heels in (Jade LP:8000-6900).

'Sassy Rookie can't be destroyed in battle once a turn.' 'Really? That's a shame, because Shell can attack twice!' Shell fired off more shards, and this time one pieced straight through Rookie, ending its debut (Jade LP:6900-5800). 'Sassy Rookie might have gone, but it left an impression. When it's destroyed, I can summon another Level 4 or below Abyss Actor from my deck. Open the show, Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser (Atk:1100). And because he's all alone, Curtain Raiser gains 1100 Attack (Atk:2200).' 'I'll set two and pass. During the End phase, Monolith's Pendulum effect allows me to draw cards equal to the amount of monsters I tributed this turn. That's two.'

Jade: 'You're… not the same threat. You hit different. I draw. I'll activate Abyss Playhouse - Fantastic Theatre.' A marvellous, brightly-lit theatre appeared behind Jade as the Field spell was activated. 'I'll use its effect. By revealing an Abyss Actor and Abyss Script card in my hand, I can add a different Script to my hand. I'll show you Abyss Actor - Superstar and Abyss Script - Fire Dragon's Lair to add Abyss Script - Romantic Terror to my hand.'

'Then I'll activate Pendulum Treasure. This allows me to add a Pendulum monster from my deck to my face-up Extra Deck. I choose Abyss Actor - Leading Lady.' 'You're denying yourself resources here.' Jade didn't seem concerned though. 'Don't worry about me, I know what I'm doing. I activate Pendulum Paradox, which adds two Pendulum monsters with the same Scale from my face-up Extra Deck to my hand. Sassy Rookie and Leading Lady are both Scale 2, so I'll add them.'

'Now I'm scaling up Scale 2 Leading Lady and Scale 8 Abyss Actor - Comic Relief. It's about time that we put on a show! Pendulum summon! Open up the duel, Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser, give us some drama, Abyss Actor - Wild Hope, and take your spotlight, Abyss Actor - Superstar (Atk:1100, 1800, 2500).' This impressive move didn't seem to move Belle's spirits however, as Jade smiled at her. 'What do you want - a medal?'

'No, what I want to do is activate Superstar's effect. He's a master of every role, so once per turn, he can set an Abyss Script on my field, but it goes to grave at the End phase. I choose Rise of the Abyss King. Which I'll activate immediately.' At this moment, Superstar spun around stylishly, and came out wearing a dark cape and a crown, a more menacing look in his eyes.

'With Rise of the Abyss King, I can destroy a card on your field for every Abyss Actor I control. And because I control a Level 7 or higher Abyss Actor, you can't respond to it.' She then looked over, and saw Threatening Roar up on Belle's field. 'That was a close one. Enjoy not having a Battle phase.' Superstar bowed to his adoring crowd, before holding his arm out and releasing a vicious storm which cracked up all the cards on Belle's field aside from her Pendulum Scales. 'I take it your other face-down was that Qlife's End?' 'You got it. Not bad for a joke.'

The comment seemed to irritate Jade, but she let it ride nevertheless. 'In that case I'll set one and pass turn.'

Belle: 'There's a difference between looking good and actually duelling good. I draw. Since you were so nice to leave me with Scales, I'll use Scout's effect to pay 800 Life points (Belle LP 7200-6400), and get a copy of Qliphort Shell. Then I'll Pendulum summon for two - from my face-up Extra Deck, Qliphort Helix, and from my hand, Shell (Atk:1800)x2. Now I'll tribute them to summon Qliphort Stealth (Atk:2800). When Stealth is summoned this way, it bounces Superstar back to your hand. And you can't respond.'

'With it out of the way, I'll Normal summon Qliphort Helix (Atk:2400-1800). Stealth, attack Wild Hope. You'll never see it coming.' True to its name, Stealth vanished from the field, reappearing behind Wild Hope with a single laser shot to the back, sniping it (Jade LP:5800-4800). 'Helix, attack Curtain Raiser. Genesis Cyclone.' Helix fired two twisting beams straight into Curtain Raiser, leaving Jade's field empty once more, and her Life point total depleted significantly (Jade LP:4800-4100). 'I'll set one and pass. During my End phase, Monolith's effect draws me two cards, for tributing two monsters this turn.'

Jade: 'I draw.' 'Don't bother.' 'Pardon?' 'You can't win. You're completely outmatched.' 'Just because you finished top of the course, you suddenly think you're some big shot? Face facts, you're not some edgy outcast, you're just some random woman scared of losing.' Belle then almost broke into a smirk. 'Better that than sleeping my way to the top.' 'You wanna repeat that?'

So she did. 'You're a below-average duellist who only got this far because you started sleeping with his cousin. And I have far too much riding on this to lose to some… some two-bit prostitute.' Normally this would have produced some sort of repulsed or incensed action. But Jade? She just laughed it all off. 'Please, I've been hearing this for years. It's why I don't tell people about my past. Anyway, we're here to duel ain't we?'

Jade: 'I draw. Take the stage, Abyss Actor - Leading Lady (Atk:1500). Then I'll use the effect of Comic Relief in the Pendulum Scale, to switch control of Leading Lady and Qliphort Stealth, before destroying itself.' 'Stealth is unaffected by the effects of monsters whose Level is less than its own.' 'That's awesome and all, but Pendulum Scales are considered Spell cards, not monsters. And Spell cards don't have levels.'

Jade's insistence turned out to be completely accurate, as Comic Relief rotated the field, all while laughing madly, before vanishing in a pink puff of smoke.'Now I can attack with Qliphort Stealth. Destroy Leading Lady.' Stealth vanished like it had before, shooting Leading Lady and destroying it (Belle LP:6400-5100). 'When Leading Lady is destroyed in battle, I get to set an Abyss Script from my deck. I choose Opening Ceremony. Then I'll set two more and pass.'

Belle: 'I draw. Enough of your charade, I activate Harpie's Feather Duster. This will destroy all your Spells and Traps.' This proved to be a mistake however, as doing this destroyed the Abyss Scripts in Jade's backrow. 'You should know not to interrupt the show. You just destroyed two Abyss Scripts - Opening Ceremony and Abysstainment. When Opening Ceremony is destroyed, I can draw until I have five cards in hand. And thanks to Abysstainment, I can summon any number of Abyss Actors directly from my deck.'

She quickly chose the ones she wanted and summoned them out. 'Time to take the stage! Be the background of my victory, Abyss Actor - Extras, give me a chance, Abyss Actor - Wild Hope, enhance the performance, Abyss Actor - Trendy Understudy, take your spotlight - Abyss Actor - Superstar, and crush her dreams - Abyss Actor - Evil Heel (Extras Def.:300, Wild Hope Def.:1200, Trendy Understudy Def.:700, Superstar Atk:2500, Evil Heel Atk:3000).'

'When Evil Heel is summoned, it reduces the Attack points of Qliphort Stealth by 1000 for every Abyss Actor currently in my production.' Evil Heel ran over towards Stealth's location, and effortlessly cracked it with its hands, leaving the monster in a crumpled wreck (Qliphort Stealth Atk:2800-0). 'Superstar, attack her Qliphort Stealth.' 'I activate Power Frame. This negates the attack, and then equips to Stealth, making its Attack the same as Superstar (Atk:2500).'

Jade smiled, knowing she had attacked in the correct order. 'Now I'll destroy your Stealth with Evil Heel.' Jade's 3000 Attack point bruiser threw Stealth around until it was little more than nuts and bolts, cementing the Iranian's advantage (Belle LP:5100-4600). 'Because Evil Heel destroyed your monster, I can set Abyss Script - Abysstainment directly from my graveyard. I end my turn.'

Belle: 'I draw. With the effect of Qliphort Scout, I'll pay 800 Life points (Belle LP:4600-3800), to add Laser Qlip to my hand. Then I'll Pendulum summon the Qliphort Helix from my Extra deck (Atk:2400-1000). And I'll equip it with my set Saqlifice, giving it 300 Attack (Atk:1000-1300).' 'Why do I get the feeling that's not all it does?' 'Because it isn't. It also acts as two tributes, so I can summon Qliphort Disc (Atk:2800).'

'When it's summoned this way, Disc can summon two Qlis from deck. I summon Qliphort Monolith and Qliphort Cephalopod (Atk:1000, 2400-1000).' 'Don't forget, they only last until the end of the turn.' 'Who says I'll need that long? I activate the Field spell Laser Qlip.' Around Belle now stood a swirling purple subspace, which had a very dangerous effect for Jade. 'Laser Qlip stops you responding to Normal summons of Qli monsters. It also gives me an extra Normal summon. I'll tribute my three Qli monsters. Kneel before Apoqliphort Towers (Atk:3000).'

Jade looked apprehensive at facing the much-feared behemoth, but quickly accepted the challenge. 'Do your worst.' 'I will. All Special summoned monsters lose 500 Attack and Defence points (Extras Def.:0, Wild Hope Def.:700, Trendy Understudy Def.:200, Superstar Atk:2000, Evil Heel Atk:2500). Now I'll take out your field. First of all, I'll dispose of your Evil Heel.' Towers fired countless lasers from its spikes, which eviscerated Evil Heel (Jade LP:4100-3600). 'I end my turn. Survive if I let you.'

Jade: 'I draw. I'll switch Superstar to Defence mode (Def.:1300), and end my turn with three face-downs.'

Belle: 'I draw. I'll keep up the pressure by using Scout's effect (Belle LP:3800-3000), adding Qlipper Launch. Then I'll summon Qliphort Carrier (Atk:1000). Carrier, destroy Extras.' The Carrier shone a light on the Extras, setting them on fire. 'Towers, destroy Superstar.' Towers' fierce lasers burned straight through the lead of Jade's show, destroying it. 'In Main Phase 2, I'll activate Misfortune, to deal you with damage equal to half of Towers' Attack points.' A shadowy miasma of the mighty boss surged straight towards Jade, dropping her points lower (Jade LP:3600-2100). 'I end my turn with a face-down.' 'You could have just said you're setting Qlipper Launch.' 'What difference does it make - you're losing either way.'

Jade: 'If this is my last draw we're going out with a bang! I'll reset my Pendulum scales with Scale 0 Abyss Actor - Mellow Madonna, and Scale 9 Abyss Actor - Twinkle Little Star. It's time for the encore - crush her dreams, Abyss Actor - Evil Heel, and lighten the atmosphere, Abyss Actor - Funky Comedian (Atk:3000-2500, 300-0).' 'And just what do you think you're doing with those?'

'Funky Comedian has an effect on summon, to gain 300 Attack for every Abyss Actor on my field until the end of the turn (Atk:0-600). Then in exchange for my Comedian sitting this Battle phase out, he can give Evil Heel his Attack points for the rest of the turn (Atk:2500-3100). Now attack Qliphort Carrier.' Belle could easily have mitigated any damage from this attack, but, looking at Phil, she got over aggressive, and tried to outsmart Jade.

'I activate my face-down Prism Wall. This changes your attack target to Apoqliphort Towers, and then we both take damage equal to its Attack, 3000. Thanks to my 2nd face-down Damage Translation though, my damage is halved. I'm not letting you take this away from me.' 'It's ironic, because you just did. I activate Solemn Judgement, to pay half my remaining points (Jade LP:2100-1050), and stop your Damage Translation.' As the chain resolved, Belle's plan backfired spectacularly as she threw away probable victory (Belle LP:3000-0, Jade LP:1050-0).

As they tied, Belle was clearly furious with herself for her moment of madness. But Phil quickly stepped in, which eased the tensions slightly. 'Well, it appears you're quite evenly matched. I would expect no less from the both of you though. As with before, we now go to Sudden Death. You will both draw a hand of six, neither person may attack on the first turn, and as the duel ended on Jade's turn, it goes straight to the End phase, and Belle may go first. You now have fifteen minutes to side anything in.'

Belle then made a proposition for her opponent. 'Want to make this interesting?' 'Interesting how?' 'Skip siding.' Jade grinned. 'Suits me. Let's make this interesting.' Jade had out-foxed Belle again, as the real reason she agreed was because in her rush that morning, she'd forgotten to bring any other cards. With the agreement, they lined up, and went again.

Arena Finals Championship Round: (2) Jade Goocheneyad LP:4000 vs. Belle Draper LP:4000

Turn 1: Belle: 'I draw. I'll set four and pass.'

Jade: 'My go. I'll scale up Scale 0 Abyss Actor - Mellow Madonna and Scale 7 Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser. Then I'll use Curtain Raiser's Pendulum ability. Once per duel, if I control nothing else, Curtain Raiser can summon himself from my Scale to start the show. And if I control no monsters, Curtain Raiser's Attack is doubled (Atk:1100-2200). Then I'll reset the high scale with Scale 1 Abyss Actor - Evil Heel.'

'That just makes no sense.' 'I'll summon Abyss Actor - Sassy Rookie (Atk:1700), and link off Curtain Raiser and Sassy Rookie to Link summon, Link 2, Heavymetalfoes Electrumite (Atk:1800, Link Arrows: ). When Electrumite is summoned, it allows me to add Abyss Actor - Trendy Understudy to my Extra deck face-up. Then I use its second effect to destroy Evil Heel and add Trendy Understudy back from my Extra deck to my hand. Then because a card in my Scale was destroyed, I can draw a card.'

'Then I'll set Scale 8 Trendy Understudy in the Pendulum Scale, and Pendulum summon! It's your time to shine, Abyss Actor - Twinkle Little Star, make your debut - Abyss Actor - Sassy Rookie, and take centre stage, Abyss Actor - Superstar (Atk:1000, 1700, 2500).' 'I activate Bottomless Trap Hole' 'You can't. When Superstar is summoned, you can't activate Spells or Traps in response.'

'Twinkle Little Star, attack.' 'Threatening Roar. So you can't attack this turn.' 'Knew I'd force something out of you. In Main Phase 2, I'll use Mellow Madonna's effect to search another copy of Superstar. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Belle: 'I draw.' The end to the previous duel and start to the sudden death clearly had Belle rattled, as she took a very long time considering her move. Eventually, she was snapped out of her lull by Hannah. 'Belle, you have 30 seconds left for your turn.' Panicked, she made any move. 'I'll scale up Qliphort Scout, and use it paying 800 points (Belle LP:4000-3200), to add Qliphort Helix to my hand. Then I'll set a monster, set one Spell/Trap and pass.'

Jade: 'I draw. Well you can't have set Helix, because I don't think they can be Normal set without tribute, so I'll activate Meteorain. Now when I attack your face-down monster, you take piercing damage. Then I'll Pendulum summon a second Superstar (Atk:2500). Superstar #1, attack.' The Superstar took "piercing damage" a little bit too literally, and produced a dagger, making Witch of the Black Forest its sheath (Def.:1100, Belle LP:3200-1800).

'When Witch is destroyed, I can search a monster that has no more than 1500 Defence points. I'll get Qliphort Disc.' 'It honestly doesn't matter. Superstar #2, attack.' 'I'll activate Negate Attack, to save myself. To save myself…' 'I'll end my turn there.'

Belle: 'I draw.' The card Belle drew gave her an idea. 'Let's do it. I'll use Qliphort Scout (Belle LP:1800-1000), to search for Saqlifice. Then I'll activate my face-down Call of the Haunted to revive Helix (Atk:2400-1000). Then I'll activate Saqlifice and immediately tribute it?' 'Go ahead, no response. Don't even bother activating Saqlifice.' 'I summon Disc (Atk:2800). Then with the graveyard effect of Saqlifice, I'll add Qlipper Launch to my hand.'

'Now with the effect of Disc, I get to summon two more Qlis from my deck. I'll go with Cephalopod and Carrier (Atk:1000)x2. More importantly, their Levels become 4. So I can overlay them both and summon out Number 27: Dreadnought Dreadnoid (Atk:2400). Dreadnoid, attack Twinkle Little Star.' The big, behemoth boat came in and cleaved the Abyss Actor in half, dealing a hit to Jade (Jade LP:4000-2600). 'Now I can hit Sassy Rookie with Disc.' Belle's 2800 Attack disc spun up extremely fast, and spikes came out of its base, as it sliced up the Rookie, who endured the hit (Jade LP:2600-1500).

'At the end of the Battle phase, I can use the effect of Dreadnoid to rank itself up into a Rank 10 or higher Machine. Rank-up Xyz Evolution! I Xyz summon Super Quantal Mech King Great Magnus (Atk:3600). I end my turn with one face-down.'

Jade: 'I draw. If you got something, it's going to be forced out here. I activate United We Stand, to give Superstar 2400 more Attack (Atk:2500-4900).' 'Great Magnus' effect. During the Main phase, it can detach a material to shuffle Superstar back into your deck.' This time though, Jade had the perfect answer. 'I activate my face-down Abyss Script - Romantic Terror.' Superstar produced a bunch of flowers, and then scarpered.

'Romantic Terror allows me to return Superstar to my hand, and in exchange, I can summon a different Actor from my face-up Extra deck. You're up Evil Heel (Def.:2000). And its effect will drop your Magnus' Attack by 1000 for every Actor on my field (Atk:3600-600). And now I'll try and attack for game with Superstar, and find out what your face-down is.' Jade got a shock when Belle just stood there, and took the lethal damage (Belle LP:1000-0). 'My face-down was Qlipper Launch.'

As Jade won, she looked to the roof, and exhaled loudly in relief. Meanwhile, Belle looked disappointed and frustrated, but took the defeat shockingly well after her earlier rantings, and offered Jade a handshake, simply saying to her 'You were better on the day. Well done.' 'You were great as well. Rematch sometime?' 'When we've both improved, yeah.' Belle withdrew, and left Jade to the plaudits.

It wasn't until Phil and Hannah came in, and presented her prize that she realised just what she had done. 'Jade Goocheneyad, you have topped the Advanced duelling course, and I can only congratulate you in the strongest possible terms for that.' Hannah then produced a small, yet immensely valuable plastic card from her pocket, and got a black pen out, writing Jade's name on the back of it. 'Jade Goocheneyad, it is our great pleasure to give you a two year WDC Tour Card, and remind you that you will compete at the World Championship as a seed.'

Hearing this, Jade slumped to the ground in tears of joy, achieving her dream, before gratefully accepting the card. 'Everyone, your certificates will be ready in about a week. You can either have them posted to you or collect them from here, but we need to know before they arrive.' The exhausting finals ended with Jade celebrating with Blair and Brooke, while Phil patted Belle on the shoulder, as she stared out to space.
