Their faces were plastered across the tabloids. They were the scientist that claimed soulmates no longer existed, it was just a story, a myth. Hermione walked past the newspaper stand not bothering to look at them. She'd grown up hearing the soulmate stories, the fairy tales, the same as everyone else. She never had heard of it ever happening in real life.

Now, they were trying to disprove the old stories. She didn't care. She hadn't put any stock in any of that nonsense anyway. She knew some people still believed, still went to new places, met everyone they could just hoping for that moment when the world flooded with music and lights.

Hermione shook her head as she walked past the pasta aisle, trying to remember if she needed lasagna noodles. She was pretty sure she'd bought some last time she was here, but then again, had she used them? With a sigh, she turned back and started down the aisle, wondering why the music over the loud speakers was starting to get louder.

It was almost deafening, the lights were flickering too, was there a storm coming in? That would just make the day that much more annoying. Finally, she reached the pasta she wanted, having been searching the shelves and not paying attention to much else.

They had moved it, of course. Now it was on the bottom shelf. She bent down to grab a box, maybe two, when she saw the toes of a pair of black boots. The music was now deafening, to the point Hermione couldn't even hear the thoughts in her own head. She rose, box in hand, to come face to face with a man looking just as confused as her. The lights seemed to flash in random patterns, forming shapes on the ceiling and walls. Hermione stared at the man before her.

"What is happening?"

"Most likely some sort of electrical short, that's all," he stated. Hermione nodded, taking a step closer to him. For some reason, she wanted to be near him, wanted to be close. He didn't step away, instead, he put an arm out welcoming her to stand beside him. The lights continued to flash and the music swelled to a sudden silence. Hermione shivered as suddenly people started talking loudly, yelling that soulmates were real, that it was all real after all.

"I'm sorry, I should, I mean, before they come over here and drag both our names through the press."

"I agree, Miss, there's a coffee shop, two doors over? Would you care to grab a cup with me?"

"You know, I never accept offers from strangers. All sorts in the world," Hermione said, not meaning the words, she wanted nothing more than to join this tall, dark and handsome man for coffee, and maybe something more.

"I'm Severus."

"Hermione. I work at the Critter Castle."

"I'm a teacher, Hogwarts College, chemistry. Is that enough for you to not see me as a stranger?"

"It's a start, the rest, I guess we could discuss over coffee?" Hermione agreed.

"Perfect. Now, let's get out of here before suddenly we're soulmates and the latest bit of gossip. I don't believe in any of that nonsense."

"Me either, electrical short, like you said."

"Exactly, this way, we can swing back and grab the groceries later, when things have died down?"

"Perfect, let's go," Hermione agreed, allowing Severus to wrap his arm around her waist and lead her from the now humming shop. She knew the news crews would be there soon enough, knew what they would claim had happened, and a part of her, was just fine with that, maybe the world needed a little bit of soulmate hope after all?
