The dim lights flickered as Hermione landed. With an exasperated sigh, she looked around. She'd appeared in what appeared to be an abandoned alley.
"Okay, Londonish, can't be the future, must be the past judging by the looks of things. Now, when am I," she muttered. She took a few steps, looking around at everything just in case something might give her a hint. So far, nothing.
She wasn't even sure why she moved through time. It was just something that had always happened. Her father had been the same, randomly moving through time without any known reason. There were theories of course, that it was something to do with the radiation leak, but so far, no one else with such odd abilities had come forward. Hermione didn't blame them.
She hated the idea of people studying her, treating her like she was different. She was almost sixteen, the age where her powers might level out. The age where she might gain some control. Finally spotting a newspaper stand, Hermione hurried over and glanced at the date – 1976.
At least now she knew when she was, had a good idea where she was, the only question remaining was how long was she going to be stuck here? The jumps could last anywhere from minutes to years. The longest one being two years. That had been difficult to explain, but at least her parents understood her ability well enough to only sort of worry about her.
She walked the street, glancing at the shops. What kind of place was this? She'd never seen so many strange things. There were brooms, cauldrons, even the bookstore boasted books by authors she'd never heard of. She suddenly became aware that she wasn't alone, there were people flooding onto the streets.
It was morning, so they must have come to shop for the day? She vaguely remembered something being said on her eleventh birthday, the day that strange woman had visited.
She'd vanished to the '80s for about a week after that. She smiled thinking about that week. It had been fun. Nothing more was said about the stranger or the meeting she'd had with Hermione's parents.
"Move out of the way," someone yelled. Hermione turned, nearly avoiding being hit by two boys about her own age racing down the street. One of them dropped a handful of coins as he ran. Hermione grabbed them quickly before anyone saw. A third boy trailed after them. Hermione shook her head and continued walking. She glanced at the coins
"I don't care what Peter says," she heard one of the boys stating. She ignored them. The last thing she needed was to get caught up in things in the past. Making friends in any time period was pointless since she'd just leave them.
"Lily! Wait up!"
"I said, 'no', what part of that don't you understand!"
Hermione looked at the girl yelling. She had red hair and brilliant green eyes. Hermione disliked her instantly. She knew that type of girl, pretty and popular.
The boy who was following her looked much more interesting. He had long black hair, dark eyes, and pale skin. He was skinny, but Hermione could see a gleam of intelligence in his eyes. Slowly she walked their direction.
"Fine, I'll do my shopping by myself," he grumbled. Hermione watched Lily stalk away leaving her with the boy.
"I could help you?" she offered, wondering why she was doing this. Making friends only lead to heartbreak.
"Who are you?"
"Hermione Granger, transfer student," she answered, giving him a slight closed mouth smile. She hated the way her front teeth looked, like they were too long for her mouth.
"Um, sure? I'm Severus."
"So what do we still need to get?" Hermione asked. "I'm completely hopeless at remembering things," she laughed. Severus glared at her, but nodded. Slowly they made their way through the shops. Hermione found she enjoyed his company and wished she could spend more time with him. As the day continued, they had lunch together, Severus telling her all about Hogwarts.
He even tried to teach her a few small spells. She didn't have a wand so they failed, but it was still fun to learn. It was nearly three when Hermione felt the charge in her limbs. The charge that felt like her veins were full of lightning.
"I'm sorry, Severus, I have to go," she whispered, darting off the nearest abandoned area. Tears streamed down her face as she felt herself becoming light, moving through time.
This time, she landed on a grassy hill. Tears still pouring down her face. She wanted nothing more than to go back to shopping with Severus, to spend every day with him.
"You idiot," she muttered. "You broke the number one rule, you fell in love," she stated, sighing. She wondered if she would ever see him again, or if that one day, that one perfect day was all they'd ever have?
