Hermione stared out the window, watching the inky blackness of space go by.
"We should be almost there," Severus whispered, squeezing her hand. "I'm sure they're waiting for us at the space station."
"We were supposed to be there five months ago, Severus," Hermione muttered, resting her free hand across her abdomen. "And now we're going to have a little one in bloody space because this pilot took a 'detour'," she snapped. Severus shook his head. He had a feeling the detour had been something else entirely. He'd heard rumors of space pirates before they'd left earth, but not put much stock in it. The fact the ship was behind schedule and they'd made several unplanned stops did not bode well for him.
"Everything will be fine, Hermione. You just need to be a little more optimistic. I have complete faith in the healers at the station."
"Just because you're one of them," she laughed, glancing back out the window. The station had come into view, a large colossus of metal and moving parts. Hermione smiled.
"There's our new home," she whispered. "I wonder what part the staff quarters are in. Do you think our room will have a view?"
"I am certain it will. We should be landing momentarily on the docking platform," he commented as the ship circled the station. There was a jolt and suddenly the ship started picking up speed. Hermione looked over to Severus, but before she could say anything -
"Alexa, how do I land a starship?" the intercom crackled. Hermione's eyes went wide.
"Is our pilot seriously asking how to land?" she asked, turning to Severus. His expression was very similar.
"You do know how to land this thing, right Hermione?"
"I know the theory, but I've never done it before. I guess I should go see if he needs help," she muttered, unbuckling her belt and floating into the air. Severus did the same, holding her hand.
"I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm not letting you out of my sight," he stated. She nodded as the pair made their way to the cockpit. The door whooshed open to reveal a young man sitting at the controls with an expression of terror on his face.
"What's wrong?" Hermione asked. She knew instantly this was not the pilot they'd started out with. She tried to remember if she'd seen this young man in the crew or not.
"The pilot... he's not breathing. I took the controls a moment ago. I was about to call for help when the station came into sight. I thought if I landed the ship there, they could help him? I'm Terry Boot. I'm the navigator, but I don't know how to land..." he confessed. Hermione nodded to him to slide over. He complied and she took the helm.
"Severus, see to the pilot," Hermione ordered. Severus complied, checking on the man. Hermione looked at the controls, took a deep breath and started hitting buttons quickly. The ship slowed. Hermione let out a sigh of relief as she piloted the ship to the station, landing it with little more than a jolt.
"The pilot?" she asked, turning to face her husband.
"Alive," he answered. "He appears to have suffered a heart attack. I've stabilized him for now."
"Good," Hermione stated, looking to Terry Boot. "Remind me to teach you to pilot a ship when I have time. I think it might be a good idea for all navigators to know," she commented, rising and heading to the exit door. "Until then, I need a hot shower and this man needs medical attention. I believe the welcoming team is already waiting for us," she added as the door slid open. Personnel from the station flooded into the ship. Hermione found herself in Severus' arms.
"At least we're finally here," she laughed, taking the first step from the ship and into the corridor that would lead to their new home.
