Sci fi September

When the apocalypse began, there was a list of people who would be moved to the bunker for safety.

Word Count: 631

Hermione had known her name would be on the list. She was brilliant, she was top of her class, she was everything a new society would want. She'd always feared that when the end came, she'd be separated from the man she loved. That fear, until today, had been unfounded. Severus' name wasn't on the list. Instead, her name appeared besides her ex's. There was no way she'd ever spend any time alone with Ron again. Severus, of course, didn't know that part of the list, only that his name did not appear on it for reasons he assumed incorrectly.

"You should go, save yourself," he whispered, holding her face in his hands. "I'm too old, too broken, we both know that."

"You're brilliant," she whispered, kissing his lips. "You're not too old. I don't care about your age, you know that."

"They want young men, men who will be able to create a new society. They don't want old men like me, men who..."

"Severus, if you call yourself old one more time, I'm going to drag you upstairs and prove just how vigorous you still are. Don't worry, everything will work out, everything's going to be taken care of. Maybe there's an opening after all," she offered, giving him a hopeful smile. She knew there was an opening. She absolutely refused to spend eternity with Ron, to start a new world with Ron. She'd made absolutely certain that was no longer an option. Sometimes a witch had to do something she disliked to make sure the world did what it was supposed to. This was one of those times.

"Hermione, we're running out of time. The world could fall at any time, it could fall three minutes from now. I'm begging you, please, if you love me, you'll save yourself."

"No."

"Hermione."

"Severus, I spent too many years chasing you, too many years convincing you that I loved you, I am not going to lose you now or ever. You're coming with me and if they really want me in their stupid new society, they're going to have to accept you too," she stated, putting her hands on her hips. "Besides, there's no proof you're any less fertile than those stupid young men you keep comparing yourself to," she argued. Severus laughed softly, kissing her.

"They'll turn me away."

"Then we'll find a way to survive. We survived a war, we'll get through an apocalypse, as long as we're together," she stated, kissing him back. He nodded taking her hand as the portkey teleported them to the bunker sight. Hermione held on tightly to Severus' hand as they walked to the entrance.

"Names?" the man asked.

"Hermione and Severus Snape," Hermione answered. He studied the list.

"I'm sorry, but his name isn't on my list," he stuttered, cowering slightly as Severus glared at him.

"Can I talk to the person in charge?" Hermione asked. He nodded, scampering off and returning again with a tall man with dark skin. Hermione fought the urge to smile.

"Kingsley," she stated.

"Madame Snape, I was wondering when you'd arrive. I had a feeling you'd be asking to speak to me the moment you did."

"Then you already know what I'm about to say, don't you?"

"I do, and although space is at a premium, there has been an opening. Professor, you are more than welcome to join your wife."

Hermione flashed Severus a smile before leading him inside the large metal room that transported them to the safe bunker.

"How?" he asked.

"Ron's name was on the list. Apparently, his mum thought that if he and I were to spend the apocalypse together, we'd fall madly in love. Guess she was wrong," Hermione stated, wrapping her arms around Severus and kissing him passionately.
