Chapter 4
Chandler opened the door and David was standing there with a big smile, the cousins gave each ther a big hug, and while they did so Chandler barely saw David's friends who were behind him. -
When the hug ended, Chandler said, "David, don't you make your friends come in and introduce them to me."
"Phew…. You always get formal English..." And David laughed and turned around to let his friends pass.
Susan came in first, a beautiful green-eyed blonde, tall and thin with a cute smile.
And behind her came Monica, Chandler was shocked by how beautiful that woman was, black hair, huge blue eyes, white skin and an adorable smile. When he shook her hand and looked into her eyes he felt an electricity he had never experienced.
Monica was also shocked by David's cousin, he was nothing like what She had imagined, he was tall, somewhat disheveled brown hair, transparent blue eyes, a mischievous and at the same time tender smile. She also felt the electricity, not only when they shook hands, but when they looked into their eyes, she felt rays going from one side to the other.
Monica thought, "how bad I look in this man's house for 4 months…"
Chandler helped the girls with the suitcases that he left by the entrance.
"I guess with the overnight flight and the jet lag you must be tired, you want to have breakfast, I'm about to prepare mine."
The three friends looked at each other and agreed "thanks cousin, but they gave us breakfast on the plane."
"Okay, but wouldn't you have coffee or tea?" Chandler asked.
Monica responded, "Of course, a coffee would be very good for me."
Chandler gave her a smile that melted her.
"And what do you prefer?
The other two friends also opted for coffee.
The three of them sat at the kitchen island while Chandler served them coffee, and then he prepared some scrambled eggs with bacon, a couple of toasts with cheese, took out some yogurt from the refrigerator, and poured himself a cup of black tea.
"I thought breakfast here had more ingredients," said Susan.
"Yes, it has everything, fried tomato, sausages, mushrooms…. but I remained faithful to the American breakfast, well it's the only thing I kept from my childhood, that and three cloth dolls, today only three remains that my mother hates to see leaning on the bookcase when she enters my room, in reality they came from stowaways "They got old before me," Chandler said with a tender smile and sad look.
Monica looked at him tenderly, it seemed incredible to her that a man like that was still clinging to the dolls from her childhood. He was evidently a man with feelings and true to himself. It couldn't be, she had just met him and she already had butterflies in his stomach!!!
At the same time, Chandler couldn't stop looking at her, making a great effort to direct his gaze and his attention to the other two guests.
Monica asked him, "You don't drink coffee."
"Here I got used to tea, at school, at Marion's house, the majority here drink tea, I like black tea in the morning and at night I like chamomile tea. I usually have a coffee at the university after lunch, but no more."
Monica remembered that on the plane David had told her about a teacher Marion who ended up being like a surrogate mother to Chandler.
When Chandler finished his breakfast and the guests finished their second cup of coffee, he told them
"I have to go to university, leave everything in the sink, Miki will come at 1 p.m. to fix the house and wash everything. She normally comes every morning except Sunday, but today I asked her to come in the afternoon, I know that you will be tired and after settling in you will want to sleep for a while."
Monica told him with a surprised face, "you don't wash the dishes…. the cups …"
"No… Miki washes them…. Don't worry about things at home, she does everything, don't make your beds, she will do it when she arrives"
"Oh I forgot, at the end of this street, turning around, there are several places to eat at noon, and here, in this folder, are the telephone numbers to ask for them to be brought to you and I repeat, they leave the dishes in the sink…"
Monica insisted, "But if you leave them in the sink, bugs may come."
Chandler looked at her with a mischievous smile and said: "Look, I usually live alone in this house, the company of some little bugs is good for me to distract myself." He winked at her, and continued.
"Seriously Monica, don't worry, but if you don't like leaving them in the sink, it's no problem if you want to wash them, this is your house, your kitchen, it does everything you want, I want you to feel comfortable" Chandler continued now more Serious.
"Well, before I leave I want to show you their rooms, I'll take Monica's suitcase up, and David, you can take Susan's suitcase up," Chandler indicated.
Monica and Susan said thank you.
They went up to the second floor and Chandler showed them which was his bedroom and which would be David's, and the bathroom on each floor.
Then they went up to the third floor and Chandler went directly to one of the bedrooms with Monica's suitcase. "Look, you can settle in this room, Susan will be in the other, and the bathroom on this floor is there, pointing to the door."
And he added: "On the top floor is my mother's suite, I'll show it to you another time otherwise I'll be late for the course."
David asked him, "Chandler, are you going with your car…?
"No, it would take much longe, a 5-minute walk away is the subway that drops me off at the university door. Guys, I finish early on Fridays, so I estimate around 3:30 p.m. I will be here and we will talk more calmly and you will be more rested."
Chandler smiled at everyone and as he passed Monica he gently squeezed her hand in greeting.
And she thought, "I think these four months are going to be very, very interesting."
Monica the first thing she did was wash the dishes, cups, pan, it was against her nature to leave those dirty. She then went upstairs and hung her clothes in a huge closet in her room. She also noticed that there was a low bookcase full of books, a dresser, and a huge mirror. The decor was cozy. It was evident that the house was old and had recently been recycled as it was immaculate.
Then she took a shower and went to sleep for a while.
Around 1:00 p.m., the three of them woke up to the sound of vacuuming on the ground floor. Miki had evidently arrived and was doing her homework.
They each got dressed, went down and greeted Miki and each introduced themselves.
Miki was a woman of about 50 years old, very blonde, with short curly hair, and a nice smile.
"I'm very happy that you are here, the man is alone a lot of the time, he is so funny and talkative, you'll see, he makes jokes with me all the time, I've known him almost since he arrived and I appreciate him a lot," said Miki with a smile.
"Do you want me to prepare something for you to eat?" I don't think there is much in the
refrigerator, the man only prepares breakfast, he orders dinner outside, but I can go buy
something at the store around the corner."
"No thanks Miki"…. "We are going to go for a walk around the neighborhood to get to know it and get our bearings and we will eat something there," said David.
The three greeted her and left.
The neighborhood was very nice, with white houses all the same, and reaching the corner on a wider street there were many restaurants and bars.
They went into one and ate typical English food, fish and chips.
After lunch they walked some more and returned to the house since Chandler would arrive soon.
Miki opened it and told them, "The man didn't give you the keys, because he ordered me to make three sets for you…. This man has such a head! As if he were in love, and I know he is not... Well at least he wasn't until yesterday…" and she raised her eyebrows making a stupid face.
Without meaning to, Monica blushed…. She hoped that no one had noticed the heat on her face, besides it was absurd, they had just arrived and she had seen it, how much? One hour …. "Monica, don't make movies," she told herself.
When Chandler arrived he greeted them and told them that he was going up to change his clothes, at home he hated wearing a suit and tie.
When he came back he was dressed in jeans and a white plaid shirt with stripes of soft colors, light blue and yellow.
Miki approached him and reminded him about the keys.
"Oh yes Miki, how stupid, how I forgot!!!", he went to the kitchen drawer and gave each of them a key "And what did you do...?"
They told him where they had walked and where they had eaten.
Monica asked him, "Chandler, could we buy food at the nearby market, since we would like to prepare dinner…"
"Chandler raised his eyebrows with a mischievous smile and said, "Monica, I told you that you can do whatever you want, but I didn't imagine that so soon I would be subjected to the guinea pig of your preparations…" And he laughed out loud…
"When we leave you're going to miss them…" Monica answered mischievously.
"Yes, of course, buy what you want, and prepare what you want, I tell you that I love Indian food…" said Chandler
"Oh! "True," said David, "one of the course subjects is Indian food…"
"There is a very good Indian restaurant on this street, so I'll have something to compare it with," Chandler said.
"Don't worry, I'm sure ours will be better…" Susan answered with a smile.
That seductive little smile of Susan's didn't sit well with Monica.
Chandler then asked them where the Academy was, and if they had looked at how to get there. -
"Not yet," said David. "We are waiting for your help…"
"What's the address, Chandler asked," then he got up, went up to his bedroom and brought a laptop and searched the internet for the roads.
"Look, a seven-minute walk away is Barons Court station, take the metro towards Holborn, get off there and then walk 4 minutes and you are at the Academy. It is the most direct without making combinations, and it will not take more than 15 minutes on the subway, total trip with walks 26 minutes" "Then I print the map and give it to you" "I lived in that area for a while"
"Anyway, in a short time they will be moles who know all the subway combinations…" he told them, smiling.
"And except David, do you girls know London, have you ever been here?"
Susan answered no, it is her first visit.
Then Monica said "well, 8 months ago I was in London for 4 days."
Chandler raised his eyebrows and smiled. "Too bad we didn't meet…" he said mischievously.
Monica blushed, but continued saying, "I came for 4 days for my brother Ross's wedding, but of course, between the wedding preparations, the dress fitting, some organizational complications, I didn't have time to go around with my friend Joey. "We only went on a tourist bus to explore the
city, but nothing more"
"And is your brother living here, or did they both go to America?" Chandler asked.
"No," Monica said with a smile, "neither one thing nor the other, the same night they got married they separated."
Everyone looked at her with shocked eyes.
"Well, it's a long story, I don't think they're interested," said Monica.
"Monica, we are all ears, and we have nothing to do, right? Chandler said looking at the others who nodded their heads.
In reality, Chandler was not very interested, to say the least, in the story of Monica's brother's wedding, but during her story he could look at her calmly and it would go unnoticed by the others.
"Well, I'll start from the beginning, with Rachel, my best friend and current roommate, we met when we were 6 years old. During my adolescence, my brother Ross, two years older than me, fell madly in love with Rachel, but she didn't even see it." and continued
"When we finished high school, each of us continued in different universities and we moved away, and she continued living in Long Island and I moved to the City, to my grandmother's apartment who lived in the Village, since she was moving to Florida."
Chandler interrupted her "Wow, I also lived on Long Island until I was 9, when my parents got divorced, and from there we went with my mother to Manhattan and then we moved here, we were neighbors for a few years" then he stopped and said " Sorry, continue with your story."
In college, my brother is a paleontologist, he met Carol, and a couple of years later they got married, and they had Ben, but by the time Ben was born Ross and Carol had already divorced, she discovered that she was a lesbian."
"Wow…. How many circumstances unite us…!. my father is gay…. Obviously, clear reason for the divorce…" said Chandler, and then asked Monica again to continue, "the story was very
interesting."
"At that time, Rachel left her wedding, and she appeared at my house with her wet wedding dress looking for shelter. From there we resumed our friendship, and my brother fell in love with her again, only this time Rachel reciprocated it."
"They were dating for just over a year, but they are both quite immature, Ross was very jealous and Rachel was always very spoiled. So they got into a fight, and they had my other two friends, Joey and Phoebe, and me mediating between them."
"It was crazy, they went back and forth, loving and hating each other all the time, so a couple of years passed until Ross met Emily, an english girl who was on vacation in The City…. and they liked each other instantly. At first I was guilty of encouraging him to continue that relationship, but things got out of hand, and two months after meeting they decided to get married here in London"
"So we all came here, well not all, just Joey, Rachel, my parents and me. "Phoebe couldn't travel because she was pregnant with her brother's triplets."
Everyone opened their mouths and exclaimed in surprise. -
"Well, that's another story, but don't imagine strange things…"
"Now we come to the climax of the story, in the ceremony when it was my brother's turn to speak and say "I'll take you Emily" he said "I'll take you Rachel" and it was the beginning of the end."
"Although they finished the ceremony and got married, Emily fled the party, my brother was
looking for her, but no one told him where she was. Already in the City, almost a month later, he managed to talk to her and they decided to give it a chance, but Emily was also quite stubborn, she wanted Ross to never see Rachel again, which was impossible for all of us because we are a very united group, we are family. So they ended up getting divorced."
"Well that's the story of how… I didn't know London… although I was here."
"Ok," Chandler said, "now if you'd like, we're going to go to dinner at the Indian restaurant so you can get into the culinary stuff, and tomorrow and Sunday we'll go out so I can show you everything that's most important in London." "Do you agree? "
Yes, of course, all three answered.
"And we are going to go everywhere by subway, so they become familiar with the fastest way to travel in this city
