"We'll make it, I swear," Hermione whispered, running her fingers through Severus' hair. She raised her head and looked out through the broken window. For the moment, everything was quiet. She couldn't see their attacker, the man who had knocked out Severus. Her mind kept replaying that moment.
They'd stepped outside the restaurant, laughing about something, she couldn't remember what even though it had only been an hour ago. Screams had filled the street. The air filled with smoke, then flashes of light. Hermione had drawn her own wand, standing in front of Severus. He'd pushed her aside as a spell flew their direction. He'd crumbled and she'd thrown up a shield while dragging him back inside. It seemed the attack was over, for now at least. Severus moaned and Hermione turned her attention back to him.
"You alright?" she asked, leaning against the wall.
"Other than a headache, I am fine. Where are we?"
"Back inside the restaurant. I pulled you in here after you were hit. I don't know what happened after that. I kept us both hidden."
"And my attacker?"
"Gone, I think. Do you think he was alone? There was so much smoke."
"I do not know. It's possible. I have a lot of enemies."
"I have just as many, more if you count the Weasleys."
"I do. Who do you think was the target? Me, you, neither of us?"
"I haven't a clue. After I pulled you in here, made sure you were still alive, I cast shielding charms, a notice me not, and anything else I could think of. If they were looking for us, they weren't going to find us."
"My good girl," Severus whispered, kissing Hermione's head. "Should we head home? Or go speak to the aurors about what happened? Did they show up on the scene at some point?"
"I think so? I heard someone shouting about being from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. As for talking to the aurors, did either of us see anything that would actually be useful information?"
"No?"
"Same. I just want to go home and put this day behind us-" Hermione stated to say when she was interrupted by someone yelling her name from the doorway of the restaurant. She slowly crawled around the counter and looked.
"Harry?" she asked, her voice filled with confusion. What was Harry doing here?"
"Hermione! There you are, I was worried. You weren't answering your floo. Then I heard about the attack."
Hermione's fingers curled around her wand. She exchanged a glance with Severus. They still did not know who had attacked them.
"Prove yourself," Hermione asked.
"My name is Harry James Potter, married to Ginny Weasley, who refuses to change her last name because Potter doesn't look on her Harpies jersey," Harry answered. Hermione let out a tiny laugh as she rose to her feet, Severus following suit.
"Sorry, we don't know what happened so no harm in being extra cautious."
"Constant vigilance," Harry stated, imitating Moody. "Sir," he added, nodding to Severus.
"Has your department figured out who was behind the attack?"
"We did, and we apprehended most of them. They're calling themselves the New Death Eaters, bunch of wankers who think they're special. From what we can tell, all they wanted was to cause trouble, stir up some chaos and get people talking."
"So, we're not in danger?" Hermione asked.
"Not to my knowledge," Harry answered truthfully.
"Good, then we shall head home and put this mess of a day behind us. Thank you for checking on Hermione, Mister Potter."
"If I'd known she was with you, I'd not have worried, sir," Harry laughed. "Not that she can't take care of herself," he added, noticing the look in Hermione's eyes. She shook her head as she and Severus headed back out onto the street before apparating home.
