"You didn't have to do all that," Severus stated, looking across the table at his date. Hermione bit her lip, her lipstick smearing slightly.
"Do all what?" she asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Ginny had promised it would stay in place, but apparently Hermione's hair had other ideas.
"The make up, the hair stuff, the dress," Severus answered. "I know this is our first date and Miss Weasley probably said you should make a good impression."
"She did," Hermione admitted.
"But we already know each other, Hermione, more than what we can see with our eyes. I already know you've kicked off your heels under the table, they were probably pinching your toes."
"I did," Hermione laughed, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks. "And you're right, I told Ginny this was all silly, that you didn't care if my hair was done up, if my eyes sparkled with eye shadow, or what color my lips were. You've seen them a million times before."
"I have. Most of the time, they're answering yet another question that seems impossible for anyone else to grasp."
"Maybe if they opened the book before classes," Hermione commented, picking up the menu on the table.
"True. Not much has changed between when you were in my class and now."
"A few things have, I mean, I would have never thought I'd be sitting across the table from you on a date of all things."
"I did not think I would be here either."
"On a date with me, or alive?"
"Yes. I heard the salmon is excellent here," Severus said, changing the subject from the horror they'd both faced not that long ago.
"What about the chicken? Is the rice any good?"
"It too is excellent actually. Did you want to go use the wash room, clean your face off? I mean, if you wish to look like you do, that is fine, but I do not wish you to be uncomfortable for no one's sake."
"Thank you, order me the chicken if the waiter comes by," Hermione said, rising to her feet. She gave Severus a peck on the cheek before disappearing into the wash room to wash the make up from her face and put her hair in something that didn't make her head feel like it was being yanked tightly.
