Hermione bit her lip before slowly laying down in her bed. She would be seventeen tomorrow and she knew what that meant. It meant she would wake up somewhere else, as someone else, just for a day. She had no idea who her soulmate was. She was pretty sure Ron thought it was him. She wouldn't mind waking in Ron's body, but at the same time, he just didn't make her feel the way a soulmate would make her feel.
He was a friend, a good friend, but there was no chemistry. As she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, her mind made a mental list of all the men, boys, she'd ever found attractive, ones that had set her heart on fire, that made other parts of her feel as though they were on fire. One of them had to be her soulmate, right? She wasn't destined to be with someone who didn't give her those feelings, it wasn't possible, was it? She fell asleep quickly, a smile on her face.
Hermione's eyes flew open. The room was dark, almost too dark. There was no morning light pouring in from a window. She blinked a few times, trying to get her eyes to adjust. She could feel the sheet against her legs, well not her legs, but the legs of her soulmate. She could tell they were bare. She suddenly became very aware that the entire body she was now inhabiting was bare. Apparently, he hadn't planned on someone else waking up in his body. She wondered if he always slept in the nude.
"Well, let's see who I am," Hermione muttered, sliding from the bed.
As her feet touched the floor, the room started to lighten. There must have been a charm on it, motion activated would be her guess. She hadn't learned that kind of charm yet, well, okay, she knew about it, but they hadn't covered it in class. She wondered if it only worked on her soulmate's body, or if anyone could activate it by simply waking up and putting their feet on the floor.
She put the charm to the back of her mind and started paying a bit more attention to the body she was currently inhabiting. Hermione noticed the dark hair on her legs, moving upwards. Her chest was actually fairly bare, with only a small bit of hair. She smiled. She had yet to see her face, but already this body was quite attractive. She tried not to look down at her new equipment, but that was becoming harder by the moment as the urge to pee increased. Finally, she found the loo and managed to relieve herself without making too much of a mess.
"I don't know why men find this so hard," she muttered, realizing there was a mirror to her left. She could finally find out who her soulmate was. She took a deep breath and stepped in front of her mirror.
Severus stretched, his hand hitting something furry. Immediately he was upright, wand in hand. It was only when the soft furry thing yawned and started to purr that he realized where he was – the girls' dorm in Gryffindor tower. The aforementioned cat yawned again and started rubbing against him.
"Beat it, furball," he muttered, realizing his voice was one he recognized, one he heard on a regular basis. "Fuck," he stated. He darted from the bed, glad at least she didn't sleep in the nude. That thought made his blood run cold. If he was in her body... was she in his? Shaking his head and wondering if this day could get any worse, he fled from the tower, ignoring the odd looks he got from the Gryffindors who had been sitting the common room trying to finish their homework last minute. He was in such a hurry, he didn't even consider taking points from them. He found himself outside the Headmaster's chamber and knocked loudly.
"Just a bloody minute," his own voice yelled. He fought back a smile. At least Miss Granger seemed as annoyed as him. Finally the door opened and Severus found himself staring straight into his own face.
"You're my soulmate? Really? What kind of cruel joke is this? Get in here!"
Severus didn't have to be told twice. Hermione slammed the door behind him.
"Soulmates?"
"I turned seventeen today... soulmates swap bodies when the youngest of the group come of age. I'm guessing you've never body swapped before?" Hermione asked, looking at Severus. It was weird seeing her body sitting before her. She really noticed the way her hair was frizzing out, how her ears stuck out just a little from this angle. It was like looking in a mirror, only distorted.
"No, and the whole soulmate thing is nonsense," Severus said, glaring at her. Hermione nearly laughed. Her body did not glare the same way his did, and all he was doing was merely making her look a bit constipated.
"You're only saying that because you didn't have one at seventeen," Hermione countered. Severus glared at her again and Hermione burst out laughing.
"What is so funny, Miss Granger?"
"That expression on my face, sir... oh, do I still have to call you sir?"
"Yes, you do."
"I'm going to guess we're going to see Professor McGonagall and figure out how to make this work... I mean, I can't be headmaster for a day, can I?" she asked, wondering if she'd ever even considered teaching as a career. She realized she had not, not seriously. The idea of being in charge of the school, the power she would wield... she could take points from the Slytherins if she wanted, no one would question Professor Snape taking points. She giggled at the sheer insanity of it.
"Absolutely not, not any more than I can take your classes for you. It would be unfair to the other students."
"You mean to Draco, he's the only one who's actually competing with me," Hermione laughed. Severus scowled. "Let's go then, sir," Hermione added, giving him a smirk. At least that expression looked like it belonged on his face.
"Severus? Miss Granger? What brings you to my office so early this morning?"
"We have a bit of a problem, Professor," Hermione started to say.
"It's more than a problem, Miss Granger," Severus hissed. Professor McGonagall looked at the two people before her, at their mannerisms, a look of understanding crossed her face.
"I'm going to guess, Miss Granger, that you are seventeen today?"
Hermione nodded. Severus glared at her, not that it did much good to see the body of Hermione glaring. It wasn't nearly as intimidating as Severus' usual glares.
"I am, and I woke up in Professor Snape's body. Apparently we're soulmates, he disagrees, of course."
"I disagree with the whole concept of soulmates and you are most certainly not mine!" Severus snapped. Hermione bit back a laugh at how unintimidating he sounded in her voice.
"I think the fact I had to figure out how to pee standing up this morning proves otherwise," Hermione stated. Severus turned a bright shade of red while Professor McGonagall tried not to laugh. She'd seen this more times than she could ever count. Most students came of age at Hogwarts and being in charge of Gryffindor she'd seen her fair share of awkward body swaps. Although this was the first time she'd seen it happen with one of the professors. She had to admit to herself though, these two were quite well matched.
"Miss Granger, Severus, if you two are done arguing. It appears that you are indeed soulmates, that much is clear. As to the fact you've switched bodies, you'll just have to live out the other's life for a day."
"Minerva! You can not think that I'm going to act like a seventeen year old girl!"
"You heard her, sir," Hermione said with a shrug. "It could be worse, I mean, I could be stuck in Ron's body."
The half laugh, half choking sound Severus made caused a smile to spread across Hermione's face.
"You agree?" she asked.
"You and the Weasel... you have nothing in common," he said.
"Exactly, sir. Now, my first class is charms, we're practicing the fire charm, I've already mastered it," she stated. Severus glared at her.
"Of course you have," he muttered. "Why me, why me?"
"How should I know? You'd better get dressed, I am not having you attending my classes in my pyjamas!"
"I am not wearing a skirt!"
"I can make it worse in one word," Hermione stated, glaring down at Severus. "Bra," she stated causing Professor McGonagall to finally burst out laughing and Severus to glare at her even harder.
