Guardian's Academia
Chapter Five:Training and Experience
"Nice to meet you all, now... from what I've heard you are all aiming for UA too. How would you like to join in on our training?" Mr Yagi said with a massive grin on his face.
"Huh?"
"Wha?"
Mori cocked his head sideways
"What's there to be surprised about? People always improve at a faster rate with others by their side! I think you would all improve far quicker if you were to train together!" the skinny man said with arms stretched wide and a smile on his face. Mori waved and signed to Mr Yagi "Do you speak sign language?" the blonde nodded as he replied "I do understand a little. Just basics though" that was enough for Mori. "I have a daily training regimen already that I have to get through. I can join in the afternoons of most weekdays though" the guardian signed to the tall man. "Hmm, so you already train but can join afternoons? Did I get that right?" the blonde questioned. "Mostly" Chikara piped up "he said weekday afternoons, his dad runs special lessons with him on weekends" Mr Yagi nodded at that "What about you two?" "School's still going but afterwards I can make it most days, I do practice my quirk control with my sister on weekends and sometimes after school though" Chikara piped up, Kanohi answering after her "I just moved here so I've got nothing better to do, I'll join you in the afternoons too" the silver haired girl answered nonchalantly. "Perfect, then lets get going!" Mr Yagi exclaimed.
Half an hour later would find Morimitsu sitting in the sand focusing on keeping a large ball of void light hovering between his hands, he was changing the current of movement inside the ball while keeping it in shape and position. It felt like trying to contain a miniature black hole while trying to make it spit out what it just ate, very difficult. Chikara however was levitating as much debris as she could, making large pieces float in the air around her while she hurled balls of wet sand at Kanohi. The silver haired girl was running around dodging as many sandy projectiles as she could whilst her tattoo glowed a brilliant blue, her skin around the tattoo was morphed into a bone-like armour with blue cracks running down the length of the affected areas. Half of her face was covered by a bone mask with the eye glowing the same blue as the markings. Energy poured from the cracks like water and Kanohi shifted the energy around her into walls and shields to block the projectiles she couldn't avoid. Midoriya was still carrying heavy objects back and fourth between the beach and the truck, he was glancing over at the others and mentally taking notes to write down about their quirks later.
And it was these kinds of activities that the four of them would be finding themselves doing for the next eight months, between training and studies they found very little time to hang out. But they didn't mind too much, the four of them were getting to know each other better while learning how to fight. They constantly took part in spars of martial arts and quirk duels, though Mr Yagi forbade Midoriya from using his quirk against people until he learned some control. In reality he still hadn't given his quirk to the young man, though he was close to being ready.
Midoriya had perked up and become more confident in himself in the time he knew his three friends, he now didn't pay any attention to anyone who threw insults at him at school. He knew that they were just making fun of him, but his real friends would never do such a thing. He also stopped following Kacchan around, it meant he got yelled at less but on the flip side his bully was inquisitive of why the nerd was getting so bold.
Kanohi was immersed in studying most days, training in the afternoons and talking to her Father back home in whatever spare time she could. He was the sole reason she had escaped her old life, and while they talked regularly the rest of her family had no idea of her whereabouts. Not that Kanohi minded, the rest of her family had been less forgiving of her wanting to become a hero. But now here she was in Japan, and on the path to making her dreams reality.
Chikara immersed herself in studying her quirk, at low levels with others around but experimenting with more potent attacks when able to find an isolated place with nothing to break and nobody to injure. Mr Aizawa had been right, she was terrified of what her quirk could do. What it had already done. But if she was to become a hero she had to prove to everyone that she could overcome fear, or else she would fail.
Morimitsu spent his time training his body and mind, though the latter was a bit more difficult. While he understood most subjects fairly well, Maths was proving to be the bane of his very existence. But while he wasn't studying or training he could be found taking jabs at groups of Vex in the red zone. Some villains hiding away from the world amongst the rubble had seen him, one had confronted him and asked if he was a hero. Mori had knelt down and written his message in the dust before turning to leave. ~I'm not just a Hero~
After nearly eight months Mori had built up quite an armoury. He now had a full kit of armour, and Solasi was holding extra for when he needed it. He still wore the same chest plate, thought it was now scratched in a few places across the chest and was coloured differently. It was now coloured a matte black with a bronze accent in place of the green. He also had a pair of full arm gauntlets that had black armour plates around the forearms and a second plate on the back of the hand that overlapped the forearm. A tough but flexible material was visible in places where there was no armour, a small brace was placed just above the elbow and a second large armour plate extended from just above the brace all the way up to the shoulder that was enclosed in a metal shoulder pad that curved around the shoulder. The left shoulder had a rising sun patterning on it while the right had the same but with an eagle made of metal curled around the armour. He also wore a pair of form fitting reinforced pants with armour guarding the outside of the thighs on both legs and greaves covering the entire calf and extending up over the knee on the front. He wore a pair of combat boots and a cloak that clipped to the chest plate and extended down his back almost to his ankles, a triple upward arrow marked the back. He also had a utility belt with a magnetic locking point for a small weapon to cling to on his right hip and three smaller mag-points for grenades to stick to, along with the normal four magazine pouches behind his hip on the left. The whole outfit was matte black with grey and bronze accents.
As for his weapons he now had his trusty 'SI-2' sidearm and the 'Perfect Paradox' that he hadn't yet found a way to fix. Three Hand Cannons, The 'Austringer', 'Elasluna' and 'Bad News XF4354'. The 'Recluse' and 'Unforgiven' submachine guns, A Pulse rifle called 'Claws of the Wolf and a bow called 'Lunulata-4B'. Then there were the Melee weapons, two swords called 'Unspoken Promise' and 'Just In Case' respectively. And a Glaive by the name of 'Nezarec's Whisper'. Last but not least were some of Mori's favourites among his new toys, he had two Sniper rifles. The Albruna-D and the Supremacy. And a Rocket Launcher called Blue Shift.
During the time he was acquiring and testing his new gear Solasi had come to a realisation, the weapons that had a Titanium alloy inner barrel and firing chamber were far more resilient and could handle void rounds without corroding. Turns out that the Vex also figured this out and so the inside of a Minotaur's weapon is lined with a layer of the exact materials needed to modify all the weapons Mori had acquired. This discovery led to Mori going on frequent raids into Vex territory to hunt Minotaurs. But because of the number of jabs he was taking at them the Vex were bolstering their forces and tightening security. It was now nearly impossible to get back into the gate room, but a massive array of sensors allowed Solasi to constantly monitor Vex movements. And over time the ghost had managed to hack her way into the Vex communication relays and was able to monitor chatter among the powerful Vex giving orders. It was because of this that the night before the UA entrance exams Morimitsu found himself atop the remains of an apartment building watching a street in the middle of the red zone.
Tonight his target was a Constructor Hydra which had been tasked with building a new gate site closer to the edge of the zone, it was being escorted by a powerful combat-focused Vex and a group of smaller units. The exact details were unknown, all they knew is that the group would be coming down this route. 'Sensor reading say they should be arriving in the kill-zone in 30 seconds' Solasi alerted her guardian, he immediately did a final check over of his equipment. Eyasluna was resting on his hip with a clip in the cylinder, he had three spare clips sitting in one of the pouches. He also had an Axion bolt, Suppressor and Scatter grenades on his belt. Normally he would have at least one Vortex grenade but he had gotten so used to making them that he could form one in the time it took him to snap his fingers and throw. He also had his knife on his shoulder and in his hands was his beautiful Albruna-D sniper rifle. He had one extra magazine for that in another pouch. With everything checked, again, he took a deep breath 'I'm ready, let's do this'
'Here we go' was the only reply he got before the first of the group entered his line of sight, Mori calmly looked into the scope of his rifle and zeroed in on the leader of the group. A Praetorian, directly behind it was the target, there were two Goblins flanking either side of the Hydra and in the back were a Hobgoblin and a Minotaur. 'Eyes on six hostiles' Mori thought to his ghost 'Affirmative, I see no more on sensors or short range scans. Whenever you are ready guardian' Mori gave a small nod and slowed his breathing, his aim adjusting so the Hydra was in his sights. He took a second to steady himself and let the shield pass by so he could get a shot near the machines centre mass. Then once everything lined up how he wanted it, he placed his index finger on the trigger and let the first shot fly. Immediately following it up by snapping the fingers on his left hand and throwing the Vortex grenade as it finished forming, the sniper round struck true hitting centre mass and tearing a hole through the floating Vex. The grenade followed the shot closely behind and landed in the hydra's path.
The large Vex shuddered as the shot tore into it and then was dragged forward into the grenade. The armour plating started corroding and melting, falling to the ground like piles of molten slag. The large Vex started up an emergency teleport sequence and the Praetorian moved to defend it, firing at the position the shot came from. Morimitsu dragged the priming handle backwards and then forwards, locking it into position once more with another round in the chamber. He saw the Praetorian raise it's weapon and fire at him, he immediately rolled to the side and launched himself from the rooftop. As he fell the other Vex units fired shots at him but none connected, the feline guardian used a cushion on light to slow his fall and landed just as the Hydra was starting to dissipate into light. He sighted in and fired another round from the rifle, the round clipped the left wing and ripped some armour plating off with tremendous force that sent the metal flying down the road. As soon as the Hydra disappeared the Praetorian bodyguard followed leaving the smaller units to take on the guardian.
No sooner than the Praetorian left Mori had swung his sniper rifle over his shoulder letting it magnetise to his armour and drawn the Eyasluna from his hip. The Minotaur that had been near the back of the group now blinked to the front and began a frontal assault, firing at the guardian. Mori just dashed at the large machine that had conveniently decided to come to him, he ducked to the side as he ran at the Minotaur and flicked the Axion Bolt from his belt onto the ground beside the machine. The bolt hit the ground and split into three homing arrows of void light that all converged onto the large Vex popping the shield and putting a hole through the right side of its back and spinning it a little. Mori aimed ahead of him as he ran, careful to keep the larger machine between him and the Hobgoblin while he emptied a pair of rounds into the left side of it's chest plate.
The combined forces sent the Minotaur spinning down onto one knee and rendering it defenceless for a few seconds. Taking the opportunity Mori traded a shot with the Goblin off to his left, striking it in the chest while he took a glancing shot off his left shoulder pad. He then dashed to his left and fired backwards into the Minotaur's core putting it out of commission, the Hobgoblin was able to see Mori for just a second and swung its line rifle around to fire a shot that missed by a few meters. Mori got the damaged Goblin between himself and the sniper and continued to close distance as fast as he could, the other goblin constantly took shots at him but none hit their mark as he ran. Once the feline guardian was almost at point blank range he raised his Eyasluna and put a round through the damaged Goblin's chassis folding the machine in half, but now he had no cover from the Hobgoblin's powerful weapon. Mori focused on the threat in front of him and was about to dodge to the side as he saw the weapon heat up, then his side erupted into burning pain and he shuddered. 'Oh shit' he thought as he looked out of the corner of his eye to see the Goblin aiming at him, he then looked ahead and saw a line of focused solar energy coming straight at him.
Morimitsu opened his eyes and saw darkness, a starless sky, the infinite void. He sat up and found himself sitting on a very small patch of concrete floating in the middle of space. There was nothing here, which was boring. "Well this sucks" he said to himself. "Wait, I can talk again? What the hell is going on" he said, but the only reply he got was the booming voice of his ghost Solasi. "EYES UP GUARDIAN"
The world flashed white and Mori felt a dull throbbing on his right arm and the right side of his chest, a sharper more intense pain in the centre of his forehead faded quickly and the guardian found himself face to face with the Hobgoblin that he assumed had killed him.
Mori raised the Eyasluna without hesitation and blasted the sniper in the gut shattering its core and folding the fragile unit in half, he spun on his feet and fired a second shot straight at the head of the Goblin behind him blowing it's head clean off. But the goblin just started sparking and raised it's own rifle, not wanting to see what would happen the feline guardian drew his knife and jammed it into the machine's core. The last machine fell to the ground limply and Mori placed his knife back into the sheath and started reloading his two weapons. "..." Morimitsu tried to speak as he had when he died, but instead a sharp pain shot through his throat and he dropped his weapon and fell to his knees clutching his throat and coughing. "Mori!" his ghost said as she materialised. "Why did you try to talk?" 'I was able to when I was dead, thought I could here too' he replied. "Huh, that's weird. As long as you are okay, you good to continue the mission?" Mori nodded in reply and picked up his hand cannon from the floor. "Alright, I need to do some scans to figure out where the target headed off to. While I'm doing that can you rip that Minotaur's cannon off? We could use the materials" Morimitsu flicked the ghost a thumbs up and got to work separating the weapon from it's holder. After a minute of cutting and twisting the weapon came free, he lugged it over to his ghost and dropped it on the ground. 'So, any luck?' he asked. "Yep, almost... got them... There! They went south a few blocks and are continuing on their original path!" Solasi said as she transmatted the cannon into her storage and dissipated once more. 'Let's go!' the ghost instructed and Mori took off once more, jumping up and using his light and some fire escapes to get back to the roof tops.
Not long after he started moving again Mori caught sight of the damaged Hydra ahead with the Praetorian on it's heels, they were moving away from him and toward a group of three Goblins. The Praetorian was ready for the guardian this time and spun around to take a well placed shot at the rooftop below him. Mori heard the cannon fire and watched the void blast melt through the wall just below him before it detonated and tore the roof below him to shreds. Morimitsu was sent sprawling through the air and towards a group of rusted cars below, he didn't have time to right himself and hit a sedan back first. The guardian hit the vehicle and felt a wave of pain blast through him from head to toe. He lost hold of his sniper just before hitting the sedan but knew it should be on the opposite side from the Vex that were now advancing on him and firing at the car.
'Ow ow owowowow, how bad is it?' the guardian asked. 'It's bad, nothing I can't fix but you won't be moving anywhere fast for a little while. I will need to heal your internal wounds if you want to keep breathing though. The impact collapsed one of your lungs' Mori groaned and rolled off the back of the car, away from the attackers. Solasi appeared before him and quickly did what she could to heal him before she disappeared again as an explosive round sent the car skidding backwards and pushed Mori away from it. The feline caught himself with the palms of his hands and looked up, his sniper lay just a few feet away. He crawled forward and grabbed it before returning to his position.
Mori put the rifle down and faced the active threat before peeking around to the right of the car, he came face to face with the Praetorian and panicked as he drew his Eyasluna and fired two shots into it's chest. The shielding around the machine fizzled and popped as Mori dove back around and looked around the other side of the vehicle. The Hydra had turned to fight and was firing explosive rounds at his cover, slowly melting it. Another volley hit and Mori was sent sprawling again, this time barely rolling out of the way of the Praetorian's suppressing beam. The feline boy holstered his Eyasluna again and picked up the Albruna before spinning into a kneeling shooting stance and sighting up on the Hydra's head. He pulled the trigger and the machine reeled backwards and started to glow brightly around its core. The Guardian spun back into cover and drew the Suppression Grenade from his belt and went to throw it toward the Praetorian when he heard a massive blast. Metal shrapnel flew everywhere, windows exploded and the Praetorian class Minotaur faltered. It looked back towards the dead Hydra and activated it's teleport sequence. Mori looked at the machine in surprise as it retreated, then put his grenade back and holstered his rifle on his back. 'Well done Guardian, the Vex won't be making any new gates any time soon' Solasi said cheerily in his ear before appearing before him to finish healing his wounds. 'Good' Mori thought 'The less of these things there are the safer people will be'
After leaving the red zone and starting his walk home Mori was lost in thought, he was thinking about how he had gotten far stronger alongside his friends. About how that Gate Lord was still out there and needed taking care of, though the thought of trying to face it down still sent a shiver to his spine. But most of all he was worried about the upcoming exams, what if one of them failed to get in? Or they were split into different classes? Mori really didn't want to be left alone after growing so attached to the three teens he called his family, not that he would tell them that.
It was while he was lost in thought that Mori bumped into a tall man and fell flat on his backside, he looked up in shock and quickly clapped his hands together and bowed his head in apology. "Who the hell... you're just a kid. What the hell is a kid doing in this part of town?" the man dressed in a black trench coat asked, then he leaned down and offered the boy his hand. "Get up and get outta here, shit gets dangerous once it's dark" Mori took his hand, noticing for the first time the purple burned skin that was stapled to the still living flesh further up. The man's hand felt hot, Mori looked at the stranger's face as he let go of his hand. He saw the same burned skin on the man's lower jaw, staples holding it to the rest of his face. His black hair was spiky and fairly long, not as long as Mori's which had to be held in a ponytail whenever he did anything, but still long enough to cover part of the face. Bright electric blue eyes locked with Mori's and the stranger spoke "The hell you looking at?" Mori just put a finger to the scar on his neck and then motioned to the stranger. "Huh, you've had it rough too?" the stranger asked, warmth and understanding creeping into his tone. Mori just nodded slowly as he dusted his pants off. Then he bowed to the guy he bumped into once more and turned to leave. "Get home safe kid, someone as young as you shouldn't see the horrors that happen out here during the night" the strange man called as he watched him go.
'He was weird, seemed to speak from experience with that warning' Solasi commented as they got closer to home, Mori nodded in agreement. 'He looked sad when he saw my scar, almost like he pitied me' the feline replied 'He seemed lonely' he said as he rounded a corner and saw home just down the street. 'Well, ready for the last part of the mission? Get in without Dad noticing' Morimitsu thought to his ghost as he neared the gate.
The guardian walked in through the gate and looked in the window, the lights were off. Good start, he opened the door with his key and stepped in quietly. Closing and locking the door behind him the feline crept through the kitchen and into the lounge, as there was no sign of Aizawa he turned toward the hallway and his room. Morimitsu took one step and the lights flicked on making him freeze. "There you are, do you always go for a stroll at night? No wonder you look tired enough to rival your dad" Kanohi said, both Chikara and Midoriya peeking over the couch between them and the still frozen-in-fright feline. 'Dammit, I forgot they were here' Mori groaned to himself as he realised he would have to tell them everything.
The next morning all four of them were up and awake early and getting themselves fed and showered before the big day ahead, Mori was barely awake and had to have two coffees just to keep himself from falling asleep. The feeling would pass in an hour or so, but he knew he had to be on his A-game right off the get go or he would be left behind. So with that in mind he started a quick workout to get himself warmed up and awake. The feline boy realised half way though that Chikara had joined him in the gym during his sit ups. "You know I'm worried about you, taking on those machines all by yourself. And I know I can't stop you" she said slowly as she sat down to watch him "Next time you go, take me with you" the purple haired girl said with a determination in her voice. Mori stopped and stared at her for a few seconds, then shook his head. "I can't put others in danger. Those things are after me, so I'll be the one to beat them down myself" Chikara protested immediately "You don't get it! We all worry about you every time you disappear off to fight them, we never know if it will be the last time we will see you. None of us want to lose you" she spoke quietly as she finished. Morimitsu watched her, he understood where she was coming from. But he had lives to spare, others didn't. "Doesn't matter if you have lives to spare, it's still a possibility that you could be killed for good. You said they had machines that could suppress your light" Mori jumped as Kanohi and Midoriya entered, the silver haired girl basically reading his mind as she made her point. "I won't sit by and let you do this alone Mori" Midoriya said firmly "We are all training to become heroes, guardians, protectors to those who cannot fight for themselves. That is what we all swore to do. So let us protect you for once" Mori took a second to think about it. He wanted to argue back, but knew there wasn't a point in doing so. So he lowered his head and nodded slowly. "Good, now with that settled the entrance exams start in fourty five, so lets get a move on" Kanohi said nonchalantly. "WHAT?!" the other two exclaimed as the feline boy leapt to his feet and bolted to get ready.
The four friends arrived at UA with just a little time to spare, Midoriya was leading the group chatting with Mori who was waving his hands around while he answered the green haired boy. The two girls followed and just watched the interactions in amusement. "Outta my way DEKU" yelled a voice behind the little group, they all stopped and a boy with ashy blonde hair walked straight through the middle of them glaring daggers at the boy he yelled at. "Don't you go thinking you are better than me just because you found some lousy extras to call friends. I'll always be better than you, ya damned nerd" he said while stalking past. Mori reached out and grabbed the boy's right shoulder, turning him around with enough force to leave the blonde reeling. Then he glared into the boys eyes and dragged his thumb across his own throat. The threat was clear, talk like that again and Mori would end him. Not that the blonde cared, he just huffed and walked away.
Mori turned back to the group and grinned at them, Kara just shook her head while Kanohi laughed. Midoriya was nervous though, they weren't even in yet and already his friends were making an enemy of Kacchan. The green haired boy shook his head "Let's get in there" he said. And promptly tripped on a brick that stuck up out of the pavement. 'Or I'll just die' thought Midoriya as he fell toward the floor like a sack of bricks.
Out of nowhere Midoriya's fall was stopped, he started floating and immediately panicked, kicking his feet to try and right himself. "Sorry about that" a girl said, having grabbed Midoriya's shoulder as she walked by. "It would be bad luck for you to fall don't ya think?"
