Hellboy sat in bed, Angel curled beside him, exhausted and sleeping. The events of the last hour wore on him too, but he wasn't ready to fall asleep. He had too much on his mind. Movement jostled him and he looked down to see Angel turning to face him. Her face scrunched up with discomfort but then it relaxed. He dropped his regular hand down and pulled a stray hair from her face. He gently ran it through before he let his hand settle in the ends of her hair, his fingers tangling in it. He set his head back against the headboard with a little sigh.
What was he gonna do now?
He thought back to the moment he made the split-decision to kiss her. It was only to distract her enough to tuck in her wings but man…that kiss. Sure, it wasn't as fiery as Liz's kisses were but this one, even if it was only a kiss of shock, it did something to his system. It scrambled his thoughts and caused it to be in battle with one another. His thoughts and feelings sided with Liz but then it also sided with Angel.
If only he could talk to Liz.
That one thought suddenly calmed everything down. Maybe that was an idea he could do. With his other hand, he picked up his cell phone, and dialed a number. He turned down the volume just a bit so it wouldn't disturb Angel's sleep and set it against his ear. It rang a few times then picked up.
A little grin slowly formed on his face when he heard the voice of an old friend.
"Hey Alice," Hellboy spoke into the phone, mindful of the woman beside him.
A voice spoke in return, "HB? Everything okay?"
"Yeah, just thought maybe I could get that favor from you?"
Silence at first, but then she spoke, "You want the chance to talk with Liz?"
"If it's not too much of a big deal?"
"Why now HB? Instead of before when I offered it six months ago."
"Let's just say I wasn't ready then," Hellboy looked down at Angel, "I'm ready now."
"…Okay. I'll meet you at the cemetery soon."
"Thanks Kid," Hellboy sighed gratefully. He ended the call, then typed out a text. The phone dinged a second later in reply. He looked at Angel again. His fingers squeezed the ends of her hair, just taking that moment to memorize the silky feel of it before he let it slip out. He carefully, very carefully, got off the bed. Luckily, Angel still slept, despite him jostling the bed a little. His large frame didn't really allow him to be able to move carefully. He stepped around his cats and grabbed his jacket. He slipped it on just as he heard the soft knock on his door. He went over to the door and opened it, mindful of the heavy creaking it could let out.
"Hey Abe," Hellboy greeted. "Thanks for coming by to watch her."
Abe's large eyes blinked, "Of course. Are you okay?"
Hellboy gave a shrug as he stepped out past Abe, "I will be hopefully. If she wakes up, just let her know I'll be back soon as I can."
Abe nodded as he stepped into Hellboy's room. The door creaked shut and Hellboy left.
Thirty minutes later, Hellboy arrived at the cemetery. It took a while to get there with all the underground traveling he had to do. If he had a car, he probably would've gotten there in fifteen minutes. He walked towards his destination. He turned his head in one direction. The grave of his adoptive father was in that direction. He almost wished he could go that way instead and talk to him. But he couldn't as his mission was much more important. He spotted Alice as he got closer to Liz's grave.
Alice, clad in jeans, a plain t-shirt, and a leather jacket, turned as she heard his footsteps. Her dreads swung across her shoulders. She stepped towards him as he met up with her. They hugged for a moment.
"Long time no see," Alice said as she leaned back.
"Yeah, it's been too long. How's the big cat?"
Alice rolled her eyes at his nickname for Diamio, "The 'big cat' is doing fine. We're doing our thing together…helping people like we used to do."
Hellboy nodded, "I'm glad. Good to know you're both doing alright without me. Not that you ever needed me."
"You brought us together HB. We're thankful for that," Alice said with a smile. "Now…that favor of yours…"
Hellboy sighed as Alice turned and led him the few steps. He looked at her gravestone. Liz's name etched for all to see.
"I can't promise you it'll work 100%. You know I have to touch the body," Alice said as she kneeled beside the grave.
"I got to try. I need to talk to her."
Alice nodded then put a hand on the grass. At first, nothing seemed to happen. Hellboy was ready to be disappointed, but then Alice's eyes rolled back, and her body jerked. Her mouth opened and a stream of thick mud-like substance pooled out of her mouth. The substance shaped into the figure of Liz Sherman.
Hellboy was stunned into silence at the look of her. It had been too long since he had seen her. When she had passed in his arms.
"Liz…" He whispered.
The figure looked at him, then smiled.
"Red. I've been waiting for you."
'Waiting?"
"I've been by your side all this time, just waiting for you to visit me. Why now?"
Hellboy looked down at his feet. He shuffled as he tried to think of what to say. He looked up at Liz.
"I…I couldn't face you. I couldn't save you. I was ashamed."
"It was my time Red. You were never going to be able to save me. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Red…you gave me everything."
Hellboy couldn't say anything.
"That night…I knew. When Rasputin took my soul, I knew. There's nothing you could've done."
"I'm sorry."
Liz laughed, "Don't be sorry! I'm happy right now. You gave me everything and right now I'm content. Except for one thing…"
"What's that?" Hellboy asked.
"It's time for you to move on. Let me go and let Angel in."
"Wait…you know about Angel?"
"There isn't much time. I've been with you by your side all this time, my love. Yes, I know about her."
"So why Angel? I mean, why should I let her in? You were the One."
"Oh Red…you don't understand. I was never the One. It's her. I chose her for you."
Before Hellboy had the chance to say a word, Liz disappeared. The figure sucked back down as Alice jerked herself back into herself.
"Wait!" Hellboy cried, jumping forwards. "I'm not done!"
Alice heaved as she took in her bearings. She looked up at Hellboy.
"I'm sorry, HB. She's gone."
He fell to his knees in despair, tears filling his eyes. Alice stood up and went to give him a hug. Her arms wrapped around his shoulders.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"It's not your fault," he said. "I…I need to be alone for a minute. Thanks kid, for everything."
Alice nodded. With one last squeeze, she let go of him and left. Hellboy sat there alone in the dark with his thoughts and tears slowly trickling down his cheeks.
