When You Love Someone

Chapter 27: I Know Places

My eyes flashed open as I was face first in a lush red velvet carpet. I knew I was in chains again and this time, I wasn't alone. Gone was the lush forest and instead I was in a richly decorated throne room.

I tried to bring myself up to where I was kneeling and tried to ignore the familiar stinging pain and saw many vampires lined the walls with two by the doors. The whole room was an opulent throne room with the two literal golden thrones in front of me. They were covered in very expensive-looking jewels and I would have guessed it was costume jewelry if I knew I wasn't a prisoner. Everyone was silent as I took in my surroundings and one vampire strode forward.

"Bow before the thrones" She commanded as I scoffed and even though I was on my knees I was not going to bow before anyone.

"Like that's going to happen" I bit back as she stared at me impassively and walked forward until she was in front of me.

"Don't make me force you. Bow before the kings." She commanded once more as I glared and said "make me"

"Very well, if you insist." She smiled as some invisible force forced me down until my nose was on the carpet.

"Bitch" I mumbled as I saw her boots in front of my face as she kneeled down and whispered, "I may be a bitch, but you are the one kneeling like a dog." As she stood, trumpets blared as doors opened and two more figures entered the room. From my position on the floor, I saw their long black and red capes drag on the marbled floor and more jewels flashed in the sunlight.

From my peripheral vision, everyone in the room bowed as the two figures spoke in a foreign language and I was pulled up by my hair by the female guard and suddenly I was face to face with the infamous Romanians.

Not going to lie I was a bit shocked by how, well…ordinary they looked.

I couldn't tell who each was at the time, but one had jet black hair tied in a very elegant ponytail at the nape of his neck while the other had such pale blonde hair cut short so his waves in his hair were more pronounced. I wouldn't dare call them handsome, but they weren't off-putting, they were kind of just faces in a crowd. Their eyes were blood red but what caught me off guard was the passion in them. It reminded me of fire, yet their expressions were stoic. Another vampire came and delicately took off their robes as they fixed their sleeves and sat on their golden thrones.

They each communicated in some foreign language as the female guard gestured to me and their eyes stared me down. I looked at both as I wouldn't tear my eyes away from them. They spoke to me, again in that language and I just cocked my eyebrow. I felt a quick slap to my face as the female guard glared and pointed at them.

"That's enough, we should not fault our guest for not knowing our native tongue." Ponytail said gently as he continued to stare at me as the blonde one continued.

"Yes Maria, her existence until now has been a misfortune enough. I can't imagine the type of barbarianism she must have suffered under the Volturi's rule, such pompous and vain rulers of the world that they have practically thrust back into the dark ages of civilization. You poor soul, how lucky for you to have escaped such a fate. Come, you on the floor is no position to have a civil conversation." Blondie spoke before the invisible force lifted and I was able to come back on my knees and glare.

"If you really wanted to have a civil conversation why have me in chains?" I asked as ponytail laughed and blondie raised his eyebrow.

"Why we aren't fools Miss.…. forgive our manners, we don't know your name." he looked like the female guard, Maria, stepped forward and spoke "Bella" before she moved back behind me and I shifted my eyes back to the Romanians.

"Beautiful. Simply beautiful…..caro Bella, fitting for you. However, given our most….shall we say cautious nature….we tend to be wary of new friends. Especially giftedfriends. We were most impressed with you Miss Bella, so please I invite you to welcome." He smiled as I felt my hair being yanked and I was dragged to their feet and pushed down to their shoes.

"Please be welcomed Bella to our humble home, as Kings of the world we are most gracious to welcome all and any of our subjects. Talented or humble, gifted or inept we are here to welcome all. We would have welcomed your friend, Felix if he had given us the same honor as your presence Bella." Ponytail said as I looked up and scoffed. Kings of the world? Kings of pomposity were more like it.

"Any King that has to kidnap their subjects are no kings Vladimir and Stefan" I growled out and felt a swift kick to my stomach as I was sent flying, the chains tightened, and I groaned in pain.

"Watch your mouth! You never address their majesties by their names! Such poor manners by the guest of the house!" Maria growled as she kicked me again and I heard a sharp clap as Maria stopped her assault. I looked up at the smirks on both of their faces and I was dragged back in front of them as they smiled down at me.

Spirited this one is! Such ferocity! You will serve us well I think." Ponytail smiled as I glared. "I know you think us uncouth and evil Miss Bella but I would think on your assumptions of us. Where would you get such an impression of us if not the winners that promoted that unjust narrative? Have we treated you unkindly? Have we not treated you fairly?" Ponytail asked as I continued to glare.

"You had your bodyguard kick me and imprisoned both myself and my friend. We suffered under your hands for months. There was an attempt on my life under your orders and Felix was raped by your guard!" I seethed as the anger bubbled in my stomach as ponytail frowned.

"My I didn't know." He frowned as he turned to the blonde one. "Vladimir we would need to have a discussion with Mr. Ambrose over his treatment of our guests." Ponytail turned to me, Stefan I learned, and proceeded "My deepest condolences to both you and your friend. I now understand your sacrifice in allowing the escape of him and thus will make sure if we ever encounter his presence we will personally apologize. We must punish him." He frowned as Vladimir nodded.

"You must believe us Miss Bella if we had known, we would have never allowed such treatment to go unnoticed. We are busy men you see and have trusted certain members to overlook such matters. Perhaps we had misjudged those we had trusted. We cannot let this go unpunished Stefan, I propose a punishment." Vladimir smiled softly and turned to me "Miss Bella please allow us to execute punishment on those that treated you and your friend so badly. It would be on our honor that we do a just punishment!" He declared as he clapped his hands and suddenly there was movement all around me before about a dozen or so vampires were piled into the room. All chained like me, but their eyes were milky white, and they looked all around them as if they couldn't see. One of them I recognized as Ambrose and I turned back to see Vladimir and Stefan smile at each other before Stefan announced something in their language and Ambrose was kicked forward.

Maria then walked forward and injected something into Ambrose as he screamed, and his eyes cleared up and he looked around wildly before his eyes landed on me and then on Stefan and Vladimir before they widened in terror.

He started to beg then, his words coming so fast in the same language that I couldn't keep up nor understand but Vladimir held up his hand to silence him and Maria, in one quick move, tore off the bottom half of his jaw so the sounds were muffled but his screams vibrated off the walls as I stared in terror.

Skip Here "Ambrose, you have committed a grave offense. We have just reason to punish you for these crimes. Your pettiness and monstrous acts will be justified today!" Vladimir declared before he issued a quick order in his language and a man stepped forward and unbuckled his pants as his bottom half was completely revealed and Ambrose started to beg as guards moved quickly and pushed him down and tore off his pants and angled him where down as I gasped in horror.

Oh no, he was going to be….

"Please stop!" I screamed as Vladimir and Stefan smiled in satisfaction as the naked man walked forward and Ambrose began to sob as I screamed more "Please don't do this! This isn't right! Please no I don't want to see this! Please no! Stop it!" I screamed before my head was violently turned just in time to see the violent act occur and I heard Ambrose go quiet.

I closed my eyes and tried my best to erase the inhuman and monstrous act and tried to muddle out the sounds to no avail. When the act was done my head was turned once more as Ambrose stayed on the floor as his blank expression turned to me and all I could do was stare in horror. End Here

"Make peace with your maker and go free!" Stefan yelled out as I jumped in surprise by his loud voice before Ambrose's head was ripped from his body and his limbs were torn and tossed into a pile. Soon all the vampires chained were torn apart as their screams vibrated off the walls. I didn't even have it in me to scream but I could only watch in shocked horror.

This was…. monstrous.

Once all the vampires were dead another guard quickly ushered in a huge black disk that was curved on the edges. They piled in all the remains and set them ablaze before my body was moved back and I stared limply on the floor.

What did I just see?

"There it is Miss Bella. Now you and your friend are justified and the ones who did you wrong are no more. You will learn we make well on our promises and punishments. As we stated if we knew the type of treatment you had we would have stepped in sooner." Stefan looked down and frowned as Vladimir confronted him.

"Calm yourself brother, we know now, and we had justice delivered. Ambrose was the lowest of scum who did not know how to treat a lover. Why force yourself on someone is so barbaric and so cruel it was rightly deserved." Vladimir stated as I looked down to the ground, mixed emotions swirled all around my head as I tried to process exactly what I had witnessed.

What had just happened?

"Miss Bella are you not satisfied with the just punishment? Did we do wrong?" Vladimir asked as I looked back up to them and I felt the tears in my eyes.

I stayed silent as I didn't want to satisfy them with an answer. I also had to admit to myself that I didn't know how to answer it either. I wanted to say it was wrong but was it?

Is this something that should have been in my hands?

No, no this was wrong. I didn't kill them; I didn't order that to Ambrose. It wasn't my fault, and it wasn't my crime. If anything, it should have been Felix that decided that, and I wondered what their motive was?

"It was gruesome," I said somberly as Stefan and Vladimir both nodded.

"Yes, a gruesome punishment to fit a gruesome crime. I do apologize you had to witness that horrendous act, but it was better that you did. Now you saw that we make good on our promises and we protect those who were wronged. We protect the downtrodden and the weak." Stefan said gently as Vladimir nodded and then looked back at me. "Now as to what we should do with you Miss Bella, as our treasured guest you would need to have the finest accommodations." Vladimir looked to me as I looked back up to them.

"Yes, we should. Although Miss Bella, you must be awfully thirsty. How rude of us brother! We haven't even offered her a drink! I think she would do well out of those chains." Stefan said as I looked back at him and I felt the chains drop away but my body was so heavy that I couldn't move.

How was this possible? Maria was stood there with the key in her hand, she just unlocked me and yet I still couldn't move? What was happening? Before I could think on it further, I smelled such a delicious scent that I growled and pounced on the brown bear that was brought in and I made quick work on its neck as I sucked it dry.

At that moment I knew I should have paid more attention to my surroundings and I shouldn't have dropped my guard as much as I did but when food was delivered to you when you haven't drunk anything in months…. you tend to be a bit desperate.

The Romanians knew that too.

As the brown bear soothed the burn, I was still so thirsty as I pounced on the next delicious scent but stopped short once I saw the blue terrified eyes that met my black ones. I took up my shield and I angled myself to crash into the wall as I turned my back to the screaming family that had entered the room.

I knew that once I did that, I gave away my secret, but I couldn't find myself dwelling on that. I turned around to see a group of humans, from what I could gather it was a family of five two teens, the parents, and a child who looked no older than twelve.

Oh no, no, please.

"Bella, you don't want your meal?" I heard Stefan say as I looked back to the smiling Romanians and I glared.

"No, these people are innocent. It would be wrong." I stated harshly as I didn't dare breathe as Stefan pursed his lips.

"Pity," he said before he snapped his fingers and dozens of vampires swarmed the family as I screamed, and the family didn't have the luxury as blood splattered everywhere and various limbs and body parts were all over the floor and walls.

Their heads were thrown, and the twelve-year-old girl's head landed right in front of me as I screamed and couldn't tear my eyes away from her blank eyes. What had they done?!

"Such a waste Miss Bella, we hand-selected them just for you. Why would you deny our gift?" Stefan muttered as I turned to them in horror.

"You had them slaughtered" I accused quietly as I glared at them. "She was a child!" I screamed as they just stared at me with empty expressions.

"They were only humans, what more could they offer to us than food. If you refused to feed our family needed to be fed. They had already seen too much; they were destined to die one way or another. You refused to feed Miss Bella. So, we fed those who were hungry." Stefan shrugged as I started to shake from rage, and I saw Vladimir smirk.

"Oh, come now Miss Bella, no need to be dramatic. As Kings of this world, it is our duty to care for our people. We are responsible for their existence and thus they are responsible for serving us. It's a beautiful trade and yet…. you refuse your instincts. Has Carlisle bewitched you as well?" Vladimir smirked as I clenched my teeth together. I had to hold my tongue, they were goading me, they wanted me to break.

"Miss Bella, we are not the evil you believe us to be. We are birthed in glory and the duty to rule is a heavy burden to bear. Yet we do it. We care for those who cannot care for themselves. Don't be so dramatic. Did Alec's antics rub off on you? Such a despondent young man, a talent for the dramatics." Vladimir chuckled as Stefan smiled and I hissed at Alec's name.

"Yes, tell me, Miss Bella, how is young Alec? Has he grown out of his depression? Has he made well with his mate? We were so happy for him when we learned he had found his match but it's foolish to have them unclaimed. Don't you agree?" Stefan smiled as I growled out and I felt the heaviness on my body as I was forced to my knees.

"How do you even know that?" I hissed out "You don't know anything about him or me for that matter."

"Ah" Stefan smiled as he chuckled more "That is where you are mistaken. Nothing goes by in our kingdom that we don't know. We must confess Miss Bella we knew who you were the second you were brought into the door. We admit that we should have calculated more with Mr. Ambrose but what's done is done. You of all people should know that eyes are everywhere Miss Bella. You lived and dined with the Volturi; I'll even gamble in the fact that you grew to know Aro's true colors. You must realize by now that everything is not what it seems. Don't be foolish my dear. Those who are smart see the pieces of chess before their opponent does." Stefan chided me as I glared.

"Yeah, well I never really liked chess all that much." I snapped as Vladimir's eyebrows rose and Stefan gave a short laugh.

"Don't undermine our intelligence girl. You are our guest but something we don't tolerate is rudeness or liars." Stefan said with a hardened edge. "You really think we don't know about the hours you've spent with our friends Alec and Jane? How you would challenge anyone who dared go against one of the best players in the Volturi? You've gained a reputation for being adapt to the game… which is why it's so surprising to see someone with such talent be so poor in the grand game of life. I'll do you the honor of honesty Miss Bella that we expected more of the one who would follow in Didyme's footsteps." Stefan frowned as my breathing hitched.

"You are a great one, Miss Bella. Such raw talent and spark, such gumption and desire! Why the same rebellious spirit and thirst for curiosity that we had grown accustomed to Didyme. No one that we have seen before had matched her unique spirit…. or her insufferable morale. There is no doubt now that you have a brilliant mind, but how brilliant is it…. that is my question to you." Stefan walked down and his cold hand raised my chin until I was face to face with his cold eyes.

"So, how brilliant are you Isabella Swan?" He said quietly as his red eyes searched mine until a slow smile appeared on his face. "I'll wager Miss Bella that you are so brilliant…as to create life in a bottle."

I gasped and my eyes widened at his victorious smile. He knew. They knew it existed. They knew I had completed it. How was that possible? "I'll say we know how to gamble brother; don't you agree?" Stefan said as I saw Vladimir nod his head.

"I would agree, although gambling never appealed to us, I'm happy we took a gamble on you. It would have been such a shame if you had died at the hands of a power-hungry fool yet here you are… alive and so filled with knowledge. We must thank you, Miss Bella, if not for your accomplishment we would have never known if such an invention would have been possible. You have our thanks." Vladimir said as he bowed to me and the vampires that lined the room also bowed at their waists as Stefan smiled.

Skip Here My stomach tightened, and I felt his grip become even tighter on my chin as his eyes glinted before his mouth was on mine and I felt his tongue enter my mouth. I tried to bring up my shield, but I couldn't reach it. I was too weak.

For what felt like an eternity I felt his mouth on mine and I shut my eyes until the moment was over. I felt his hands cup me and I squirmed against his touch. His other hand raised and squeezed my breasts as he forcefully kneaded them and I yelled in pain. I wasn't ready and he took no mercy. In the background, I heard laughter and felt Stefan hum against my mouth until he released me and kissed my cheeks one at a time before he resumed his position next to Vladimir.End Here

"A kiss from a king Miss Bella, to show my thanks. The pleasure that you have been granted I'm assured will bring you much comfort in your stay with us. An honor that few are bestowed with, I hope you cherish it as time goes on until you deserve another." Stefan smiled as I shivered and spit out what I could onto the carpet.

"I hope I never do anything so worthy." I snapped "A kiss from a devil is more like it" I spat as they just laughed.

"Oh, such dramatics, Miss Bella you are entertaining. No wonder the Volturi were so smitten with their new addition. I admit we underestimated you when we learned of the new vampire that wandered the halls but as we learned of your investigations and how far you were willing to go, it was a delight to see someone with a gift instead of curiosity. She served us well." Stefan said as Vladimir nodded and cast a look at me.

"She did indeed, yet a moral compass always seems to find their way into their heads. Such an unfortunate fate for dear Charmion." Stefan chuckled.

"What did you do to Chelsea?" I yelled as I remembered her resolute expression in the cave as she told me to run. Did she know what was coming to her by allowing my escape? Did she know what would happen?

"Rest easy knowing that we did not order the death of your friend, although I admit that if Aro hadn't taken care of the loose end it would have forced our hand. Charmion chose her path, we did nothing but to honor that. She served us well in the fact she kept her eyes on those who needed the extra observation. When she came to us with the knowledge that one Bella Swan was investigating, she did so with skill. Such a shame that a talent like her ruined our partnership with a moral compass." Stefan said as he shook his head in disappointment.

All I could do was try to hide my disgust.

"However now, we must decide what to do with you dear," Vladimir said as my mind raced and I looked up sharply as I met both their stares.

"What to do with me?" I questioned flatly as Stefan and Vladimir exchanged looks.

"Well of course. We can't keep you in our throne room for eternity. You are our guest and thus we need to decide where to put you. Of course, we aren't fools either so the one who can help us with our decision Miss Bella is you." Vladimir smiled as I glared.

"So nice of you both to consider me," I said sarcastically with a hiss.

"Now no need to be ugly. We believe ourselves fair and just. You have done nothing to harm us, do nothing to try and dissuade us from our goal. It's actually the opposite. You have the knowledge and skills of an alchemist. In this war of power, you did what we thought was impossible. You accomplished what even Didyme could not do. You made life in a bottle, you finished Didyme's noble work when even she, the greatest alchemist known to our kind, could not do such a deed. It is both commendable, respectable, and praiseworthy." Vladimir smiled as I growled.

"Nothing I do will have me reveling in any praise you have. I did what I needed to do, that's it. I don't want any praise or compliments you give me" I growled out as they continued to smile.

"Such spirit, just like Didyme." Stefan crooned as I glared.

"Perhaps we should make her the deal brother? After all she has proven that she is much like her successor – it would be worth it to take this gamble," Vladimir said as Stefan looked deep in thought before he smiled and nodded his head.

"I agree, lets gamble together yes?" He asked Vladimir before he turned to me. "We've gambled on you before Bella Swan. We'll gamble again." He whispered with a glint in his eyes as he smiled. "We will offer you a choice, Miss Bella. The same choice we offered only one another. You will make that potion Bella; we will be able to help each other. Be true friends and allies. You will have the opportunity to renounce your past self and join us here, in the Romanian way, and be of use to the greater good in our kingdom. You will be cared for, your loved ones safe, all the jewels we can offer and a role in the kingdom that we will create. You can have all this that we promise you and more, but only if you decide to be with us. You can choose this life for yourself Bella…. or you can die here and now. The choice is yours."

I stared in shock as I bit the inside of my cheek. Those were seriously my only options? Join or die? They have to be insane if they think I treasured my life so much that I would go willingly and share my knowledge with them. Absolutely crazy.

I scoffed and let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Join or die? Seriously? You really gambled on the choice I would make? Do you really believe I would give in to your insanity just to spare my life? That I would ever aid you in your quest to do what? Take over the world? No thanks." I spat as Vladimir only smiled and Stefan came closer until he stood in front of me.

I felt this unnatural heaviness engulf me as I couldn't move at all and I felt Maria's hands lift me until I was standing, and Stefan smiled and stepped closer until he was mere inches from me. He brought his hand to my cheek and I felt his fingers trace my jawline and moved a stray piece of my hair behind my ear as he placed a small kiss on my cheek and I felt his hand move from my cheek to my waist as he embraced me, I felt his lips on my ear as he whispered the words that changed my future forever.

"We gambled on your desire to know the truth."

I clenched my jaw together as I tried to look at Stefan and I could only see Vladimir's easy smile as Stefan slowly started to wrap his other arm around me and I felt his hand rest on the small of my back and he turned his head into my hair as he inhaled deeply.

"You are a gem, Miss Bella." He breathed softly as I stiffened and waited with bated breath on his next move. "You are beautiful, although I condemn Ambrose's actions, I can understand his desire. Your body is tempting; the lushness of your bottom, the draw of your rounded breasts, and the allure of your womanhood are all temptations to any mere man as well to a King…. and yet the most tempting is this beautiful mind of yours." He whispered as I felt his hand rest on my head.

"This beautiful, curious, and above all the unquenchable thirst for knowledge of your mind. That, Miss Bella, is what makes you a gem. Any king can have their desires be met with any mere woman that has open legs and a willing heart but you, you are not just a mere woman. I have no interest in the spreading of your legs or the pulse of your womanhood. No, my interest lies in the sole will of your heart's desire to know the truth and that you will open your mind to me." he whispered as he brought his hand down my hair and he finally stepped away from me. The waterfall of relief to have him no longer be so close to me was short-lived as he continued to speak.

"Tell me, Miss Bella." He continued as he smoothed out my hair and all I could do was glare. "Can you stand here and tell me with an honest heart that you know the truth about anything of importance to you?" He asked as he then took all of my hair and placed it back behind my shoulders, my face fully exposed to him. "Can you tell me that you know of the truth of Mr. Alec's feelings to you? The desires, touches, and words that you have longed to hear but because of cowardness you never did? Can you tell me if he would ever indulge you in your deepest fantasies together? Can you tell me if he would even want to?" He whispered as I bit the inside of my cheek as the clink of my armor made itself known.

"Can you tell me that you know of the truth of the elusive Aro? Aro who was able to outsmart you, Aro was the one that nearly had you killed. If you hadn't made that invention you would not be standing here today. Do you know the truth of why he did it? Do you know the truth as to what motivated him to do it?" he whispered as I blinked and let out weakly "Didyme" before Stefan chuckled and placed his hands on my shoulders, the rings on his fingers glittered in the sunlight.

"You say Didyme, and that is partly true, but the other piece is this: Aro wanted what Didyme had, Aro has always wanted what Didyme had. The love of the people and the heart of one man who could have made that possible." He whispered as I tried to hide my disbelief.

"He has grown in popularity by playing the part of the grieving brother all these years. His actions to right the wrong of his sister's death have gone down in infamy. Who wouldn't want to support a leader that cares so deeply and strongly? Who wouldn't want to lend their lives to one who devotes their existence to science and the belief of his sister's ideology – the betterment of people and betterment of vampirism all over the world? It is a potent combination is it not?" he asked as I took in his words and filed them away to muse on later. Now was not the time to bother me with the motives of Aro. He wasn't the threat in front of me.

"And what of the infamous Didyme?" I snapped back as he smiled and looked me up and down, and I followed him with my eyes.

"I know Aro has told you that Didyme was murdered on that fateful night. That his sister became no more than ash that was left to be mixed with the rest of the dead. That her beautiful mind and body was lost to the world." He whispered as he squeezed my shoulders. "That was a lie." He concluded as my eyes widened, and I stared at a smiling Stefan.

What did he just say?

"Aro believes this as irrefutable fact because we were the ones that burned her, yet Aro has never been one to look at the pieces in front of him. We had to earn his trust, he was a piece that we needed for the grander game and Didyme was the pawn that we planned to take the King with. We were in luck when we found a talented vampire for shields. Didyme was as safe as Aro was on that night. She burned and the light of the fire was enough to convince Aro of the misdeed of betrayal of blood. Vladimir personally escorted a confused and defiant Didyme back here, to our home as we offered her the same choice we had just offered you: Join us and live in luxury or die where she stood. Just as you did, she was defiant, she had no qualms about the sacrifice of her life but just as we gambled on you, we gambled on her. We gambled on her mind. On her heart."

It was all I could do as I stood there and listened to this insane tale that Stefan told, as yet again, my understanding of the mystery of Didyme was unraveled again. It was true, Aro told me with certainty that she had died but yet the only other beings that witnessed the act were telling me something completely different. Who was truthful? As much as I loathed it, the Romanians were gambling on my mind. Isn't that what led me to this position I was in the first place? The truth as to what happened? The truth as it was, in all the sides, the perspectives and pieces? I thought I had all of them, but did I make a miscalculation? As I stood there, frozen and stared in the knowing red eyes of Stefan, I realized yes; yes, I made a miscalculation.

I never thought to consider what the Romanians witnessed that night because I felt that Didyme's death was finite but if they are telling me the truth. If I dare trust the Romanians of all people, that they were telling me the truth, then that would mean that Didyme could be …. alive?

That was the draw of the line.

Who to trust, what to trust, and most importantly – what do I trust to gamble my life on?

No matter what choice I made there was always going to be some type of regret. They had me and we all knew it.
