Chapter 33. That teeny, tiny, thing
Anna rolled over her blanket for the eleventh time in the night. Left, right, left, up, down and... nothing. She couldn't sleep at all. Her mind, busy with thoughs, wouldn't let her rest. She felt tired of course. After all that had happened, who wouldn't?
She should be snoring loudly by now. And yet she couldn't afford be still or rest her eyes.
She made another turn to the side of her bed wondering how late could it be. And just right at that moment, the Princess heard the loud bell from the tower in town announcing midnight. She buffed and kicked the covers.
"Great". She mumbled.
There was no use to try to sleep. All she could do was think about Elsa and Arendelle, and Elsa again, and the fire, which would remind her of Elsa once more, then she would revive her last meeting with the Council where she had to report her findings and sign some documents in Elsa's "resting period". And again she was thinking of Elsa again.
And her mind was back to the reconstruction of the hospital, when Elsa popped in her mind again, the park, where Elsa fought the flames, and…. Of course there was their recent visit of the trolls and all the things Anna had found out. Specially one teeny, tiny, detail that was in fact the true reason Anna couldn't sleep at all.
Anna blinked twice and clapped her cheeks to stay focused.
Yep. A lot was no her mind. But mostly Elsa and that teeny tiny there was literally, so much going on recently around her sister. Like everything, so yeah there was no time to rest.
She stood up from her bed and waited slightly for her eyes to adjust to the semi darkness of the room. She put on her slippers and looked up at the window.
"The sky's awake". Anna said shortly as she stared at the northern lights outside in the sky giving that magical atmosphere above the fjord.
Magic. Right. That word was enough to trigger Anna's thoughs to go back to their visit to the trolls and that teeny tiny little discovery.
Although to call it tiny thing was no justice to what it really was. In fact it was just the opposite. It was HUGE. Like, the event of the century. But there was so much going on around her sister that Anna had to put that enormous thing on hold, until she found the time to process it.
So for the moment she would address it as her sister's thing. And there was much to think about this "thing". Like since when did it started? Anna wondered. She stayed there in front of the window not knowing what to think.
On one side, how could she sleep after what Grand Pabbie had said?
And on the other hand, how could SHE sleep or even think about anything else, after Anna's new discovery about her sister and this "thing"?!
"Ughhh!" Anna looked up in the sky. "If only you two were here." She called her parents imagining the lights shininig was their way of responding to her.
Her sister was living a real novel right now with all the drama that was happening. And Anna couldn't even know what to do.
Anna stared at the dancing northern lights in the dark sky, reviving their recent visit to the trolls and the infamous thing going on.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... … ... ... ... ... ... ...
Elsa had finished her story of how her powers began acting weird and now everyone knew she had been struggling for a while to hide it. After that Elsa did not enter into much detalis of the events, but per Grand Pabbie's request she did shared how she had felt all those times.
"It's weird Grand Pabbie," Elsa said. "All my life, my powers have been almost like a reflection of my thoughts and feelings. But now, when my magic acts strangely I can't explain it. It's like it would act on its own. Almost like before. When I tried to conceal myself. It all started since the Council of the Realms' – see continued- "and ever since, my magic has been acting erratic and even dangerous. Sometimes weak, and other times stronger. And well, even some of those times I had put people at risk or hurt them. And now, what happened at the fire, apart from shootting sharp pikes of ice I also felt this pain in my body when I wanted to summon my powers. It was like an invisble force that wouldn't let me use them. Or more like something was blocking my magic or even being taken away. It felt almost like it was being drained. And I know for certain that never has my magic reached a limit. On the contrary, sometimes I feel it could be more powerful if I let loose of it."
"The reason behind your magic it is indeed a mystery of its own dear Elsa." Pabbie patted the Queen's hand. "But I agree on what you say. Since you were born with magic your limitations are mostly bonded to you only. As long as you are strong in spirit your powers will also be strong."
"Then what could have happened?" Elsa asked.
"Mhmm," the troll scratched his chin. "During the fire, when you tried to use your magic you couldn't do it at first, is that correct?" the old troll asked.
Elsa nodded. "Corrrect."
"But if I understood correctly, you managed to use your powers after some tries?" he asked again. Elsa nodded again. "And it hurt to do it."
Elsa looked at her hands. "Yes."
"Where did it hurt?"
Elsa looked up at him and looked at her family and friends with hesitation. Anna hugged her sister's arm in support and Elsa took a deep breath then spoke. "I still cannot put the pain into words. It is hard to explain. I felt like an invisible force was pressing my chest not letting me breath and like all my energy dropped in an instant. Almost like fainting or drowning. And then, when I tried to force my mind to focus and produce my magic as I wanted, my body felt heavy and my legs and arms felt numb. The pain, was not entirely physical but it was there. Everywhere, I could feel it from my head to my feet and even my fingers. It was so strange."
"I see." he replied undestanding. He looked deep in thought then spoke as he took Elsa's hand.
"May I?" he said raising a hand to reach Elsa's forehead.
Elsa nodded in agreement and sat in an old log to be at the trolls' level. The old troll produced a magical light in front of Elsa's forehead and closed his eyes. He stood quiet for a minute or two then sighed and removed his hand from her forehead. "Mhmm, I do not feel any sign of curse or dark magic inside you. But I do sense an unbalance inside you and your magic."
"What does that mean?" the Princess had asked this time.
"It means something out there could be magical as well and affecting me." Elsa said as she looked concerned and almost talking to herself.
Everyone seemed surprised by Elsa's guess. Except for the old troll who just looked at her with a simpathetic look.
"You don't seem surprised my dear." the troll said to Elsa, calling the Queen's attention again.
She sighed. "I cannot explain it, but I was expecting it. That time in the fire, I was able to use my magic even if it hurt. That would mean that my magic is still there." She looked briefly at her right where the Prince was standing and then looked at the troll again. "I even made some tests with my magic and everything seemed normal. Maybe even stronger. So the only logical solution I had come to is that, something external is affecting my powers. And that maybe that something is not always there. Because only in some occasions I've felt that way."
"So that time in the fire," Elsa continued explaining. "That would mean that something must have been near me."
In that moment the Prince kneeled and sat on the big log to be at the same level as Elsa and Pabbie, "Elsa, your dream."
Elsa turned to look at the Prince, "You mean...?" And he nodded at her.
"The cloaked figure!" Anna said as she also sat in the same log quickly to join into the conversation level. She was also thinking what Derek was thinking.
"That must have been it." He turned and agreed with Anna.
"Wait what dream?" Kristoff intervened who was looking at them still standing. "What are you all talking about?"
"A dream?" Pabbie asked. "Elsa, dreams sometimes come with warnings or messages. And you child, being born with magic, could even have a stronger connection to the spiritual world, making your dreams more meaningful. Please tell me about it."
As Elsa told her dream Pabbie would only nod occasionally as everyone else listened. After she finished telling it the troll just sighed.
"I see." Pabbie said. "I believe your subconcious is trying to tell you something and being your magic an extension of your deepest emotions and feels it would be logical that your dream would become a bit more realistic."
"What about the cloaked figure? Is it real or was just a methaphore in her dream?" The Prince said in a worried tone. "Elsa did you see anyone or anything that night at the hospital? You know, with the classic villain cloak and everything?"
The Queen denied with her head.
"Only you and the baby. And you were wearing that cow suit so it is out of the question you could be the cloaked figure." The Queen responded as she looked at him. "Even so, everything was falling apart and in flames. We barely made it out alive. I doubt someone else would be crazy enough to jump into their possible death."
"I know. Before I found you, I had searched almost every room in the first floor for the baby and saw no one." Derek said.
"So did I." Elsa added. "And when I was inside that ice sphere it was only you that was calling my name and...wait!" The Queen opened her eyes and looked directly at the Prince.
"What is it?" he asked at her.
"I just rememebered something from that night." Elsa said with her eyes wide open. "I could hear your voice calling my name, but I thought I heard a man's laughter. I thought I was allucinating the voices because of the smoke. But you turned out to be real, so maybe that laughter was also real."
"What? Are you sure?" Derek said as he frowned concered. "I don't recall hearing any laughter."
"I cannot be certain. But I know for sure it wasn't your voice." the Queen explained. "This laughter sounded more mature and deep and sarcastic even."
"So like an evil laughter?" Kristoff intervened.
"Kristoff, this is serious." Anna shushed him and pulled his coat as she was sitting and couldn't reach his arms.
Elsa turned to look at the ice harvester. "Well, not to sound cliché but yes. Like an evil laughter."
"So, it's a crazy thought but," Kristoff said as he scratched his head. "if the mysterious evil laughter belonged to the same person with the mysterious cloack from Elsa's dream, then maybe this mysterious person knows about Elsa's powers and knew that a fire would be the best chance to get to her."
"What are you implying?" Elsa asked him.
"Well," he sighed. "you having ice powers and being the Queen of Arendelle and stuborn as you are would never stay with your arms crossed if a fire would happen in your own kingdom would you? I saw you Elsa. The moment we saw the flames you turned into badass Elsa and went full power against the fire. It was awesome."
"We all jumped into action Kristoff." the Queen said with a soft smile. "I just happened to have a magical advantage. It was logical that my powers would be required."
"Exactly," Kristoff said. "Almost too perfect. Why fire? Because someone knew that you would be out there. I bet whoever it was, it's responsible for starting the fire too." Kristoff said.
"What?" Elsa turned around to Kristoff. "You mean, the fire was not accident?"
"I was going to tell you at the castle when we would meet later." Anna spoke this time. "But you and Derek here decided to go on a side quest instead and I hadn't had the chance to tell you the details about the meeting with the ice harvesters and the fire fighters."
"What did they say?" Elsa asked at her sister.
Anna sighed. "Well, Captain Jorgen assigned a party to inspect all areas and they found marks that could be evidence of the fire being provoked. Of course, I made them keep their findings to be confidential. We don't know who to trust and also we don't want to alert anyone." Anna explained with a serious tone.
Elsa looked worried. "You did well Anna. Until we know more this stays with us and the Captain's team. What else did he say?"
Anna sighed and spoke. "They found out that some of the tents of the fair had been spread with oil and a guard found a broken lamp that had been left there to start the fire."
"And? Did they find any other clues?" Derek asked this time.
"Nope." Kristoff answered. "Although they did found some empty bottles of wine and a knife. Their guess is that the knife must have been used to cut the inside of one of the tents. Who ever left it there, must have been so drunk to care."
"So the cloaked figure man is real after all." Derek spoke out loud in thought.
"But Derek, you didn't see or hear anyone else in the hospital." Elsa said.
"I know. But what if your magic had something to do with that?" the Prince suggested. "I have excellent hearing sense but you have magical powers. What if you were able to sense magical auras or something like that."
"That's not how my magic works."The Queen explained.
"Remeber that time the royals made a snow fight. You summoned Olaf's parts that had been scattered all over the yard. Don't you have like a sixth sense or something magical under your sleeve Your Majesty? I've seen you make an impossible horse jump just by instict. I believe you are more sensitive to some things that most of us. It's like you have a connection or something."
"Derek," Elsa almost laughed at his thought. "That is ridiculous. I can't see the future."
"I'm not saying you do have the divination power, Miss Adele Dazeem." Derek pointed out, making the Queen raise her typical not amused eyebrow at him. "Sorry," he shrugged, "I had to."
"Of course you had." She simply said.
"But seriously, Elsa." He insisted saying her name this time with a softer tone. "You can't deny you have some habilites the average person doesn't have. And I mean that in a good way."
"Derek please. Don't be ridiculous." Elsa sighed.
"No, no. He's got a point." Anna pointed out. "Elsa, you always seem more aware of things that many of us. It's like you know you can do it beforehand."
Elsa looked surprised.
"Yeah, it's scary. Ow!" Kristoff said as he received a hit in the leg pull from his girlfriend. "I mean, you always do things that seem imposible and even make it look easy."
"In elegant clothes and In high heels might I add." The Prince dared to say. Elsa just gifted him a look he must have been too familiar with by now and just smiled back.
"I'm wearing boots now Captain." The Queen said showing him her footwear.
"And they suit you boot-itfully of course." He said with a half smile as he dropped one of his bad puns that made Anna wince. While Elsa just stared down at her hands and bit her lip at his punny compliment. The female troll population that was there, instead just sighed dreamily as they stared at the Prince.
"I'm just saying Elsa, maybe your powers let you sense that evil thing even from afar." the Prince added. "Fine, now that I say out loud it does sound crazy."
"See?" Elsa said finally looking up at him. He scratched his wild hair feeling embarrassed.
"Actually," interruped the old troll. "What your friend with the perfect teeth suggests, might not be so far from the truth Elsa."
"What?" Elsa and Derek asked at the same time as they turned to look a the troll.
"Just because you were the only one to sense it doesn't mean it wasn't real." Grand Pabbie said. "Elsa, your magic is sensitive and it wouldn't be a surprise if you could be able to sense other kinds of magic and react to it and the other way around. Maybe what you sensed was indeed magic of some sort. Not dark magic but maybe something related to magic. You must have sensed this person and the magic that's been affecting you. Maybe from a distance. That would explain why you were the only one that heard that."
"I can sense magic?" the Queen's asked surprised. Her eyes even shone with a bit of excitement.
Anna had turned to look at her sister. Instead of seeming scared, Elsa had asked that even with a slight tone of happy surprise. Maybe, to learn about her powers and to learn something new was like opening a new book for her sister.
"It seems like you can, but it requires lots of power and control to do that. You were born with it so that would make it more natural for you." The troll explained. "Maybe your magic acting erractic as you said, it is not acting erractic at all. Maybe it is responding to something or someone. Like this crystal you gave to me." the troll said as he showed Elsa the ice crystal she had gifted him for his birthday. "Look," the troll produced some purple colour magic next to the collar and the crystal began to glow in response. "See. This crystal, even if small, is an extension of your magic. And reacts to my magic."
"So, that's why it feels so n-ice everytime I wear this?" The Prince took out of beneath his shirt his own ice collar with Elsa's crystal. Derek's was smaller than Pabbie's but Anna could see more detail had been put into the design. It was semitransparent and had a beautiful light blue glow. It was until now, that seeing it so closely Anna could notice that besides of the small snowflakes carved into the design, there was a small snowflake inside of the crystal. It seemed that the glow came from the tiny snowflake itself. Pabbie's crystal didn't have that much detail and didn't have a snowflake inside either. Why would Elsa add such a tiny snowflake into Derek's collar if it would be almost imposible to notice it, except for a close distance? Maybe It was just for Derek to see it.
Anna wouldn't ask them. After all, she didn't need divination powers to know what they would respond. "its a long story" they would probably say.
So yes. She would keep her questions to herself.
Anna remembered what it had felt when she had put on Grand Pabbies' collar. She had felt as light as a feather and as if a magical air surronded her. It had felt, well, duh, …magical.
"Ah, I see you were also given one young man." Pabbie answered. "Of course, I would be guessing, but I bet yours feels different. As it is an extension of Elsa's magic. It would respond to you as she responds to you only."
Now Anna was curious. How could Derek's crystal feel?
"That's so cool." Derek said with an obvious pun. Then he turned at the Queen. "Thanks for giving me a worthy souvenir of you Your Majesty." he said with that mischevious smile that Anna sometimes had seen in the Prince. Mostly when he and Elsa talked about a shenanigan they had been involved and didn't share any details. Just another of their long, long stories.
Elsa just rolled her eyes as Anna was alredy expecting it would happen. As she always did. "You are welcome." she answered. "You can keep it alongside the rock sourvenir I guess." she said withthe same complicity in her voice. Which called Anna's attention. Here they were discovering Elsa's life might be in danger and Elsa and Derek had just decided to talk about souvenirs?
And yet, Anna was thankful for Derek trying on his own way to ease the atmosphere of possible danger ahead. Although, not conventional, it was working with her sister.
Derek must have gotten the Queen's teasing message as he responded a smirk and then said. "The rock statue is a national treasure of course. But this," his thumb pointed at his chest where the collar was. "is by far the best tourist trap I had fallen into."
From afar Anna would have sworn that some trolls, mostly the female ones let out a dreamy "awww" at Derek's words. And she knew why. If she didn't knew them better she would have sworn those two had jumped from teasing to flirting with each other.
Wait. Wait . Wait. What?! Flirting. Nah!
Focus Anna. She told herself. The love experts were fueling her imagination. She thought.
Anna shook her head. Not to mention Olaf's story had brought some crazy ideas to her and also that fake wedding must be playing some games on her mind.
What was expected to happen now was that Elsa would conjure a snowball or a pile of snow or do something funny with Dereks' hair as revenge for his joking side. Anna knew that was going to happen already. Wait, where was the snowball? No snowball? Not even a glare?
Anna looked at her sister again and instead of a snowball the Queen responded with what Anna would never imagine to happen. Not even in a thousand years.
Elsa smiled shily at the young Prince and said, "Snow refunds Captain."
A pun! Elsa punned back. Intentionally. To Derek. The pun lord.
WAIT. WAIT. WAIT. WAAAAAIIIT WHAAAAAAAT?!
Anna's eyes opened wide and she tried to keep her face still.
Keep calm Anna. She told herself again. That was just weird but that doesn't mean anything is going on. Right. Right?
And that mere sentence was enough to break the Prince handsome demenour and blink. "You've got to be flaking with me?" he said with a soft laugh.
"Just don't get used to it." Elsa simply said trying to not show any emotion. "It's just a little token of my gratitude. For … you know." She said sounding serious. But Anna had learnt better to read her sister. Elsa was trying her best to not show her true emotions before an audience of trolls. Trolls that almost married her to the same Prince she was thanking and for whom Elsa would risk everything and pun in response.
What? Anna blinked perplexed .
What was Elsa thankful for that would be worth a pun? Anna wondered. Knowing her proud sister, Anna knew it must have been huge. Could it be related to Elsa's tale of how Derek woke her up from her fever puting her inside a bathtub? Which by the way, sounded so ridiculous that Anna had though Elsa had lied to her. But, maybe it did happened. Which meant that, Elsa was literally thanking Derek for getting her submerged in a tub filled with water.
Yet, Anna sensed this was just the tip of the iceberg.
Oh God! Did she just thought in a pun? Please no. Not her. Anna pressed her hands harsh to focus again.
"I told you didn't I? You can always account on me." The Prince joked. "Even if it involves some crazy psychopath trying to kill us all. I'll be that stone in your shoe, or high heel or boot. Of course I accept puns as payment."
"Of course you do." Elsa said as she turned to face him. She didn't seem mad at all. On the contrary, she seemed content with his response. Like she was already expecting it.
The Prince shrugged with a guilty smile. The Queen responded with a soft smile.
As the royals faced each other, there was a moment where Anna felt like an intruder. They locked eyes for a mild second, but as quick as it happened, their attention turned back to Pabbie like nothing weird between them had happened.
That look. Anna was no troll nor expert but she was certain of something. That look had had a lot of meaning. Besides, Elsa was certainly not the type to lock eyes with someone just to thank them for something.
Hold the fork on!
And then Anna knew her priorities had been moved all of a sudden to be overpowered by one she had been so blind to see. Of course they had to find the mysterious origin of that evil evilness, sort of thing; and solve the issue about Elsa's magic; and there was the rebuilding of Arendelle's centre and hospital. Yes. Yes. All of that was important.
But this…
This, had become a priority of the highest order. Her sister. Elsa of Arendelle. The one and only Snow Queen and the infamous Rebel Prince had a…well…she was not quite sure what it was…but it was. They had a thing going on!
Anna heard her mind scream. She pressed her teeth to avoid letting out a girly scream.
And then Elsa adressed Grand Pabbie like nothing had just happened.
"So, my magic can sense magic?" Elsa asked as focused as ever. Like she hadn't just given more material to the trolls and Anna's poor mind.
And Pabbie nodded and mentioned something about magic stuff and spirits and bridges or something. But every word that would enter Anna's ears would just pass to say hi and leave. Because all of her senses were now focused in Elsa and Derek that now that she payed attention, they had their shoulders pressed together. Which by the way in Elsa's standards meant too much. Elsa had an issue with proximity and her fear to hurt others with her powers by mistake. But here she was, not minding being the middle of the sandwich between her sister and her "friend".
And then there it was. The proof that Anna had been waiting for. When Elsa moved her head slightly to nod at Pabbie, and a wild strand moved to cover part of her eye and cheek.
Without taking eyes of the troll, Derek moved his hand almost like instinct to him and arranged Elsa's hair to rest behind her ear with a soft move and then returned it to hold his cane again. The Prince was so focused in Pabbie's words that he didn't seem to realize what he just did. Elsa of course did notice it. And she did flinch a bit by the guesture, but didn't seem as surprised as one would expect of the girl who isolated herself for thirteen years; ran away from her own party and moved to built herself a castle for one night at the top of the mountain.
And there was no ice wall this time conjured by her sister to avoid human touch. In fact, it almost seemed that the Queen actually welcomed the guessture like she was, well,…. used to it?
WAIT WHAAAAAAAT?!
Anna was loosing her mind. She wanted to know more. She had so many questions. And suddenly they weren't about the villian or magic in this story. But about the protagonist and the second character that has turned out to be relevant in the plot.
Anna blinked. And yelled at herself in the inside to concentrate. Pabbie was talking for heavens sake and her mind was already playing scenarios in her head with the two royals next to her in every scene.
Okay, okay. Relax Anna! She told herself. I need chocolate. She thought. Her sugar levels had dropped to critical Anna's standards.
And she fought as hard as she could to her nosy mind and tried to listen the conversation.
"So my magic acts on its own but just because it's a reflection of my thoughts?" Elsa asked.
"That is correct." Pabbie answered.
"Does that mean I am in no control?" She asked with a slight worry in her voice.
"Not exactly." Pabbie said. "More like, it expresses what you feel. But sometimes our feelings or thoughts are not precise and are in disorder. That's how your magic reacts to sudden situations Elsa. Like a sneeze. It comes natural to you but can be erratic sometimes."
"I know about sneezes too well." Elsa nodded with a small smile.
"Tell me about it." Kristoff said sharing a small laugh with her and Olaf.
"Let me put an example, I believe my kin almost wed you to your friend here right?" Pabbie pointed at Derek with his cane.
Elsa's ears and cheeks turned slightly pink in an instant. Derek looked flustered as he shook his hair and suddenly became very interested in a mushroom in the floor.
A blush! That was a real blush! In Elsa's face. Not a shadow, or a reflection of some light. But a real blush. In Elsa. In Elsa for heavens sake! Last time that Elsa had a slight shade of red in her cheeks was that time she got cold. And even that was rare to happen.
So, forgive the poor heart of Anna's but this was the revelation of a century.
So, of course, Anna's alarm was going nuts. Code red. CODE RED! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
"For that I apologize child. You see my family can get very excited sometimes." Pabbie said.
" It's alright, Grand Pabbie," Elsa said trying to speak natural besides her flustered face. "But what does that have to do with my magic being sensitive?"
"For what I have been told, your magic saved you from an accidental kiss is that right?"
"Err, yes?" Elsa responded almost hesistant.
"And did you planned to produce that wall of ice?" the troll asked.
Elsa thought for a moment. "Not really. I just wanted to prevent it to happen. And my magic did the rest. It's been always like that. Like a reflex or something."
"Exactly!" Said the troll in a tender smile. "It is an extension of you, because it is part of you. So, when your magic sensed that danger it wasn't acting erratic but …"
"In defense." Elsa guessed. "Grand Pabbie I thought the pain was caused by my powers but could it the other way round?"
"What do you mean?" The troll asked.
At the word pain, Anna finally managed to finally put aside her other thoughts and concentrate in her sister's well being.
Elsa sighed. "Maybe my magic has been protecting itself and myself from a threat and then at the fire, when I was so vulnerable physical and emotionaly, maybe that stranger's magic finally got what it wanted from me. And my magic got hurt? So maybe I felt the extension of that as pain?"
"Wait... you mean you felt your magic's getting hurt?" Kristoff asked. "Is that even possible Grand Pabbie?"
"Mhmmm..." the troll thought. "It sounds rare but not impossible. Elsa's magic is a mystery of it's own. So, it could be a possibility."
"So, I might never know how or why I am the way I am." Elsa said with a sigh.
"Only time will tell what is destined for you, my sweet child." Grand Pabbie said with a smile. "But for now, you must focus in healing. And I mean healing in body and spirit. Only when your mind, and heart are at peace you may find balance in yourself and hence in your own magic. I believe you have a lot to think about both of them don't you dear?" he patted her hand tenderly with a knowing smile.
"Err..Yes. Of course. As always, thank you Grand Pabbie for everything."Elsa just nodded with a soft smile her eyes moved slighty to her right and...
Holy forking shirt! Did she just turned to look at Derek just now? Right after Pabbie's question?
What did I miss?! Anna asked herself. What is this thing?!
