When One Piece is Missing, Everything Falls Apart (Part 2)
[Cheers. Morning]
(Outside the bar, Norm parks his car and is surprised to see Cliff arrive in civilian clothes)
Norm: Cliffie!
Cliff: Normie! What are you doing here? And your job?
Norm: Carla didn't answer the phone and Kelly told me Woody hadn't come home yet, so I asked my boss for an hour.
(When they see Carla arrive, they are both surprised and run towards her)
Norm: Carla! Any news about Diane?
Carla: I haven't talked to Sammy yet. Oh, there's Woody.
(Nervous and worried, Norm and Cliff turn and see Woody arrive, exhausted, disheveled and haggard)
Norm: Woody!
Cliff: Do you know how Diane is?
(Hearing just her name, Woody bursts into tears on his friends' shoulders. Cliff and Norm exchange glances scared, drop him on Carla and run out to Norm's car)
Cliff: Do you think she's dead?
Norm: I don't know, but I didn't like Woody's reaction.
(...)
[Massachusetts General Hospital. Morning]
(Scared and worried, Cliff and Norm rush out of the elevator. Seeing Sam by the vending machine, the two of them run up to him)
Norm: Sammy! How're things around here?
Cliff: Woody burst into tears just by mentioning Diane.
Norm: Any word yet on what it was?
Sam: Poisoning.
(Hearing Sam, they both open their eyes wide in shock)
Cliff: It wouldn't be Carla?
Sam: No. She hates her, but she's not a killer.
Norm: Is she's gonna be alright?
Sam: I don't know.
Cliff: Is it very painful?
Sam: (Somewhat annoyed) How would you feel if you saw your mother like that?!
Cliff: I meant physical pain! (Tearful) Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the restroom.
Sam: (Grabs him by the shirt) I'm sorry... I misunderstood the question... In that sense she's fine. Thank you for your concern, and for coming... Although I think it's better if you come back later or tomorrow. She's sleeping now, she needs to rest.
Cliff: Alright.
Norm: Anything you need, you know where to find us.
Sam: Yeah...
Making your way in the world today
takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries
sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you wanna go
where everybody knows your name
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see
our troubles are all the same.
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.
You wanna go where people know
people are all the same.
You wanna go where everybody knows your name.
[Massachusetts General Hospital. Noon]
(Carla knocks on the door and enters the room. Sam is sitting looking at Diane as she is sleeping peacefully. Carla is surprised when she sees the situation)
Sam: Carla... What are you doing here?
Carla: I wanted to see if Whitey was alive or not.
(Diane wakes up when she hears them and glares at her)
Carla: I think I have my answer now.
Diane: (Threateningly) Carla... I'm locked up here until God knows when, 104°F, with more meds than Norm beers on any night at Cheers and, if that wasn't enough, my organs are shutting down because someone poisoned me.
(Hearing those words, Carla is left speechless and all intention of mockery vanishes. She looks at her seriously and shocked and then she looks at Sam)
Diane: (Threateningly) So either be nice or leave. I'm in no condition to put up with your teasing.
(Carla raises her hands as if in police arrest and takes a step back, scared)
Carla: I swear I had nothing to do with this!
Sam: I know. You're cruel, but you're not a murderer. (Somewhat annoyed) Did you come here just to make fun of her, or do you have something to say?
Carla: Actually I came to see how you were doing, Sammy.
Diane: (Annoyed) Thank you. Although coming from you, it doesn't surprise me.
Carla: You should go eat something now that I'm here.
Sam: (Dryly) I'm not hungry.
Carla: I don't care. It's been almost 24 hours since you last ate. I'll stay with Diane.
Sam: (Resigned) All right. But don't you dare do anything to her.
Carla: I think she's had more than enough this time. I won't bother her.
Sam: Is someone in charge of the bar?
Carla: Cliff.
Sam: (Annoyed) Cliff?! He doesn't know anything!
Carla: Yeah, but he was the only one available.
Sam: (Sighs resigned and annoyed) Can we go out for a sec? I need to talk to you.
Carla: Lacking your office or the pool room...
(They both go out, Sam closes the door and looks seriously at Carla)
Sam: Carla... The situation is quite serious. Doctors aren't even sure she's gonna make it.
(Hearing those words, Carla felt as if she had been thrown a bucket of cold water, mostly because she was expecting a scolding for leaving Cliff in charge, not a report on Diane's health. On several occasions she had joked about her dying, and sometimes she could be quite cruel to her, but she had never thought that something like this could actually happen)
Sam: Please be kind to her. If the worst happened, I wouldn't want her to leave thinking you hate her or that she's a pain in the ass.
Carla: Okay...
Sam: And, Carla... Diane is not aware of how serious the situation is, so don't say anything. If you make her suffer, I'll fire you and sue you.
Carla: Seeing her like this, even I wouldn't dare bother her. Go eat and stop worrying about me.
(As soon as Sam turns to go to the elevator, Carla enters the room and Diane, assuming they were talking about work, looks at her upset)
Diane: I'm sorry. Because of me the bar has been left completely unattended...
Carla: Unless you took the poison to kill yourself, it's not your fault. You're somewhat to blame 'cause you're annoying, but I said I wouldn't bother you and I won't. Do you have any idea who it was?
Diane: No...
Carla: Did you have lunch with someone at work?
Diane: No, I ate alone, and I brought food from home.
Carla: Did you lose sight of your drink at some point?
Diane: No. It was in my purse the whole time and it was in sight, no one went near it.
Carla: What about the guy who made you taste the beer at Cheers?
(Diane, noticing this, opens her eyes wide in disbelief)
Carla: You're an idiot.
Diane: But... It can't be, that man seemed like a really nice person. And it was the first time I saw him. What could he have against me?
Carla: Nothing, but many other people do. Besides me, who else could want to kill you?
(Diane stops to think for a moment and pales, shocked)
Diane: Andrew Schroeder... Oh, no, I feel the room spinning.
Carla: (Alert) Lie down. I'll talk to Sam when he gets back and I'll talk to the police later and ask them to open an investigation.
Diane: (Very weak and confused) Why...? You... want to help me...?
Carla: Under normal circumstances I wouldn't, but after seeing how lonely I am in the bar and how Sammy is, I'm starting to wonder if it's really a good idea for you to die.
(Diane, hearing Carla, smiles, nodding off)
(...)
Carla: (Looks at her watch and looks towards the door) Sam should be here any minute. (Looks at Diane) Diane... Diane... Well, I guess I can't complain, at least she doesn't talk in her sleep, this way I can relax. (Suspicious) Wait, isn't this one of your tricks and you're actually listening to everything? (Shakes her)
Diane: (Asleep) Mmm...
(Distrustful, Carla lifts her arm and then lets it go. When she sees it fall limp, she grins with satisfaction)
Carla: Those drugs are great. I should have tried this long ago (smiles).
(Carla remembers when Sam said "Doctors aren't even sure she's gonna make it" and her smile turns into a serious, remorseful expression)
Carla: (Feeling guilty) Now that you can't hear me... I want to apologize for the times I've gone too far, like when I tried to push you into an angry attack dog. But you know? Even though I don't like you and even though I think you and Sam aren't a good match, I'm grateful for some things, like when you lent me Sammy to annoy my ex-husband, or when you came back to Cheers even though you didn't want to and helped Sam stop drinking, or when we won at bowling when you took Woody's place, or when you were gone for like ten years... And I also want you to know... that even though I find you annoying and even though I'd be happier if Sam was with another girl, I don't hate you as much as I'm letting you know.
(Sam, who was standing in the hallway by the door, is surprised to hear this confession)
Sam: (Quietly) Carla...
(In order for her not to be suspicious, Sam takes a couple of steps backwards silently)
Sam: (Quietly) Sometimes being tall comes in handy.
(As if nothing had happened, Sam enters the room)
Sam: How's everything going here?
Carla: (Slightly startled) You haven't heard anything, have you?
Sam: (Pretending he does not know anything) Hear what? (Distrustful) You didn't do anything to Diane while I was having lunch, did you?
Carla: No. She fell asleep about one minute after you left. It's nice to deal with her like that (smiles). But Sammy, we need to investigate the poisoning.
Sam: I know. It was a full-fledged assassination attempt. Did you have time to talk to Diane before she fell asleep? Does she have any idea who it might have been?
Carla: Yes, a customer at the bar. (Sam is surprised) But we're sure he was just following someone's orders, Diane didn't know him.
Sam: But other than you, who would want to kill Diane?
Carla: Andy Andy?
(Sam, realizing this, looks seriously at Carla)
Carla: It's either him or someone from Diane's past whom she has also gotten on his nerves. In any case, I'm gonna stop by the police station to tell them what happened and bring them the video from the bar's security cameras so they can start looking for him.
Sam: Thank you.
Carla: Oh, and Sam, before I go and taking advantage of the fact that Diane is still asleep, I have to ask you something important.
Sam: (Fed up and annoyed) No, Carla, I don't regret dating her again.
Carla: That wasn't the question! (Serious and a bit sad and worried) What I wanted to know was... How are you, Sammy?
(Sam, seeing that it was not her usual bullshit, but genuine concern, is surprised)
Carla: I know Diane and I aren't exactly friends, and I know I've often joked about her dying, but I never thought she might actually die of anything other than rage or envy, or that she'd look paler than Lilith in the winter.
Sam: You missed laugh.
Carla: (Confused) What?
Sam: We've seen her dead laughing too, remember? The other day at home looking at pictures from when we were kids, and years ago, when you showed us pictures of Nick and Ginno.
Carla: (Smiles as she remembers) Yes.
Sam: (Sketches a smile) You know? (Smiling) When I think of Diane the first thing that comes to mind is the intellectual and sophisticated Diane who instead of sitting at the bar with a beer like everyone else, sits with a book; the Diane who is amused by all the crazy things that happen at the bar and laughs like one of us; and the upright Diane who is always giving moral speeches to others when they do something they shouldn't do. Also the attractive Diane I slept with every night in the mid 80's, the more mature Diane of the 90's who doesn't mess around anymore because she knows what she wants, and the unhinged Diane who gets angry, frustrated and yells in arguments. (Serious and worried) I never thought she could look so... fragile, physically speaking. (He looks at her worried) I'm terrified just at the thought of losing her. Watching a loved one fade away and leave suddenly is tough. I've been through that with Coach and... I'm not sure I'd be able to go through it twice.
(Hearing him mention Coach, Carla's expression became more serious, and also sadder)
Carla: (Serious and somewhat sad and worried) I guess that answers my question. (She squeezes his arm a little as a sign of support and affection) Anything you need, you can count on us.
Sam: Thank you... And, Carla... Thank you for taking care of the bar for me, Cheers... it's my home. (He puts a hand on her shoulder and squeezes it a little in a sign of support and affection) Our home.
(Carla and Sam smile)
(...)
[Afternoon]
(About one hour after Carla leaves, Woody knocks on the door)
Sam: (Surprised) Woody!
Woody: (Peeking his head in, somewhat daunted) Can I come in now? I've eaten, slept and eaten again, and I promised myself I wouldn't cry.
Sam: Come on in.
(Woody enters and, seeing Diane, bursts into tears. Sam, hearing this, sighs resignedly)
Woody: (Crying, kneeling by the bed, sad and worried) Miss Chambers... Please, don't die...
(Hearing Woody, Sam puts his hands to his head. Although he could not blame him, he himself had had a similar reaction when he saw her. If Sam Malone, who was a tough guy, had broken down, what could one expect from Woody, who, in addition to being emotional, had a kid's heart? To be fair, the image was shocking, not just because of her paleness and stillness, but because of all the things she had surrounding her body. However, Sam was sure that as soon as Diane woke up –which would not be long with all the crying– and started talking to Woody, he would be feel much calmer. As Sam assumed, she woke up as soon as she heard Woody's bawling. Seeing him so worried, she stroked his hair a little as a sign of comfort and affection. This made Sam smile)
Diane: Woody...?
Woody: (Surprised) You're alive!
Sam: (Between shocked and annoyed) Of course she's alive! Don't you hear the monitors?
Woody: I thought they always made that sound.
(Sam sighs somewhat annoyed and resigned and Diane sketches a smile and shakes her head as if to say "He doesn't change")
Sam: Carla didn't tell you she was already awake?
Woody: No. When I asked her how she was, she said "There's still a chance she might die", so I got scared and rushed here.
(Diane is surprised and Sam is startled, but tries to hide it with a sigh of annoyance and resignation)
Sam: (Nervous) With Carla is always the same. I know Diane is not exactly the picture of health right now, but from there to dying...
Diane: (To Woody) To be honest, I don't know if she said that to mess with you or with me.
Woody: Probably both. But that doesn't matter now. How are you feeling?
Diane: Terrible. But don't worry, I'm sure I'll be fine in just a couple of days.
Woody: Would a hug make you feel better?
(Diane smiles and stretches out her arms. Woody, seeing her, smiles and hugs her gently)
Woody: I feel better already...
(Sam and Diane exchange glances and laughs)
Sam: Hey, Woody, would you mind staying here with Diane for a while? I'd like to go home to take a shower and grab a couple of things.
Woody: Sure, no problem.
Diane: Would you mind bringing a couple of my things too?
Sam: Sure, what do you need?
Diane: Toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrush, panties and make-up.
Woody: Uuuh... I think this is getting private.
(Misunderstanding everything, Woody stands up to leave, but Diane grabs him by the shirt and stops him. Woody turns around puzzled and Diane looks at him with a grin)
Diane: Relax, it's nothing private. (To Sam) Bring comfy ones, no sexy lingerie.
Sam: (Scoffing) Don't worry, there's no way you can turn me on this sick.
Diane: (Looking at him with a "Very funny" face) Oh, and bring me a mirror too.
Sam: You know there's one in the bathroom, right?
Diane: (Holds up the arm she's got the IVs in) And you know I'm literally tied to the bed, right?
Sam: Right. Okay, I'll get you the mirr- Wait, what do you want the makeup for?
Diane: To practice my sfumato. What do you think?!
Sam: That you're gonna have to translate that to English if you want me to understand it.
Diane: (Rolls her eyes and sighs resignedly) It's a painting technique that consists of building up layers of paint with extreme care. It's the technique Da Vinci used to paint the Gioconda, also known as Mona Lisa.
Sam: Ah! Wasn't it easier to say that you wanted to do some paintings?
(Diane rolls her eyes resignedly)
Sam: I don't understand you, though. Why do you want to get all done up here?
Diane: To feel and look better.
Sam: That's what medicine is for. Besides, you spend half the time sleeping.
Diane: Good point. If my mascara ran, it would give Carla more reasons to make fun of me. Bring the one that has no color and the one that says it's waterproof. And bring the blush and some lipstick too.
Sam: Don't you prefer just lip balm?
Diane: Are you planning to take advantage of me while I sleep?
Sam: No. It's just that dark colors... I don't know how to say it... It's not that they don't suit you, but they make you look... older, and more serious. I liked the light glowy ones you wore when we were a couple better. Pink or peach. I like the red ones too, but I guess they're not very appropriate for a hospital.
Diane: (Sketches a playful smile) I didn't know you paid attention to those things...
(Sam, seeing her intentions, blushes and gets a little embarrassed)
Sam: I don't-
Diane: (Smirks) But that's okay, then bring light, discreet colors.
(Sam turns to leave, but Diane stops him at the door)
Diane: Sam, wait. What other things do you like to see me in?
Sam: (With a playful grin) Not now, Woody's still here.
Diane: (In protest) Sam! Tell me at least the ones that aren't private! (Annoyed and resigned) He left...
(...)
(After a while, Sam enters the room and is surprised and smiles at the sight of Woody and Diane sleeping peacefully, head to head)
Sam: (Quietly, to himself) What I should have brought was a camera.
(After dropping the bags on the floor, Sam realizes that everything is very quiet, too quiet, looks at the monitor and, realizing there are no vital signs, panics. Scared, he runs to Diane, leans on the bed and puts two fingers on her neck to check her pulse. Diane, with the touch and movement, wakes up and opens her eyes at the same time Sam notices the first heartbeat. Though still with his heart in his throat, Sam breathes a sigh of relief and Diane looks at him confused)
Diane: Sam? What-?
(Sam, realizing why the monitor was not working, raises his head somewhat annoyed and rolls his eyes. Diane keeps looking at him waiting for an answer, but instead of saying anything, Sam lifts Woody's leg, uncoils the cables and connects them to the switch. Diane leans a little on the bed to sit up and, seeing them, smiles as Woody wakes up and looks at Sam)
Woody: Easy, Sam, I wasn't thinking of putting the shoes on the bed, I don't wanna get it dirty, that's why I left my feet hanging off.
Sam: No, you idiot, you unplugged the monitor cords.
Woody: Ah...
Sam: (Quietly, to himself) Good thing nothing happened.
Diane: (Looks at him with a smirk) I'm not going to die that easily.
Sam: (Somewhat annoyed and nervous) You better.
(...)
[At night]
Diane: Sam, I think you should go home to sleep, you need to rest.
Sam: No way. Make room for me.
Diane: (Perplexed, annoyed and outraged) Sam...
Sam: Look, if you're misinterpreting my intentions, you're wrong. I wouldn't lay a finger on you even if you asked me to.
(Diane is surprised and stares at him)
Diane: Alright. (She rolls away)
(With her permission obtained, Sam takes off his shoes, gets into bed and hugs Diane)
Diane: (Wary) Are you sure you'll be all right with all that cable and tubing?
Sam: Don't worry, I promise you won't wake up with Popeye arms, I have experience in this.
(Diane, sickened and shocked, looks at Sam with strong disdain and pushes him away)
Diane: (Outraged) You...
Sam: I meant my grandma.
Diane: (Relieved) Ah...
Sam: The times I've done it in a hospital it wasn't with a spider woman.
(Diane, somewhat fed up with Sam's jokes, rolls her eyes, pulls the blanket over herself and turns around to avoid seeing him)
(...)
[Morning]
(Sam, now sitting in the chair, watches Diane sleep as he holds her right hand between his and smiles as he begins to picture scenarios: him carrying Diane in his arms dressed as a bride as they spin around, very happy; Diane in a bikini and very close to him, smiling at him on a white sandy beach; Diane screaming in fright on a roller coaster as he is having fun; Diane greeting him in a black lingerie nighty and a pregnancy test in her hand; Diane making lunch 8-9 months pregnant as he hugs her from behind and kisses her neck; Diane happy and smiling holding their newborn baby; their children –a boy physically similar to him and a girl physically similar to Diane– playing together in the garden as they look at them cuddling and smiling. Before he can continue imagining any more scenarios, the heart monitors suddenly drop and Sam pales in horror. Panicking, he runs over the bed, but gets caught in the cables and falls. At that moment, two nurses and a doctor rush into the room and Sam scrambles out of the way so they can do their job. One of the nurses checks Diane's pulse to make sure it is not the monitor's fault and another checks her breathing and puts a mask on her. Meanwhile, the doctor opens her gown a little and gives her a shock, but no response. He tries again, but still no response. Once again, he tries again, to no response. Devastated, he looks at Sam)
Doctor: I'm sorry, we've lost her.
(...)
[Early morning]
(Terrified and drenched in cold sweat, Sam wakes up and sits up suddenly, as if by reflex, and gasps. Noticing the movement, Diane wakes up)
Diane: (Half asleep and confused) Sam?
(Sam, enormously relieved and grateful, jumps to hug Diane, startling her)
Diane: (Confused) Sam, what-?
Sam: A nightmare...
Diane: About me?
Sam: (Pulls away from the hug and looks at her from above, serious and with his arms resting on the sides to lift himself up) What do you think?!
Diane: (Looking him in the eyes) I don't know, you could have dreamt that you were poisoned, (trying to hide a smile that begins to form on her lips) or that they cut off your-
Sam: (Annoyed, he removes his hands roughly, sits down next to her and looks at her sideways) Shut up.
(Diane holds back her laughter and Sam, seeing her, cannot help but smile and kiss her. No matter what she looked like or what she was wearing, when she smiled like that, Sam could not resist)
Sam: I'm sorry I woke you up.
(Sam, intending to go back to sleep, lies down and hugs Diane tightly. Still scared, he kisses her on the head, rests his chin on her head and looks out into the darkened room, traumatized by the horrible nightmare he just had and immensely grateful to have his beloved safely in his arms)
(...)
(Around six in the morning, the first rays of sunshine begin to sneak through the window, heralding the dawn. The sky shows a beautiful palette of pastel colors and the air is still cold outside. Sam has his back to the wall, sitting next to Diane, who is still sleeping. The beautiful, peaceful scene is shattered when the heart monitors indicate a sudden but steady increase of her heart rate. Sam startles, looks at Diane worriedly and glances towards the door, wondering if he should call a doctor. Before he can take a step, Diane wakes up, looks at him in fright and starts crying)
Sam: (Worried) Wh-What...?
Diane: (Crying) I'm sorry... I... I should have stayed... It's all my fault... I hope someday you'll be able to forgive me...
Sam: (Scared and on the verge of tears) Forgive you for what? Diane, you're scaring me... Did you have a nightmare?
Diane: (Shakes her head as she cries) No... We don't have much time, she's close...
Sam: (Very scared) What? You mean you're gonna...?
Diane: (Crying) Yes...
(Sam felt as if his world was shattering in a matter of a few seconds. That "yes" was the confirmation that he was about to experience one of the most painful losses of his life, possibly the most painful one, because losing Diane meant not only losing the person he loved, but also that they were never going to be able to build the future they dreamed of together. His fear and pain quickly flashed across his face, but nothing was to compare to what he was feeling on the inside)
Diane: I love you, Sam. I always have and I always will. I regret putting my career before you. It was a mistake. I've accomplished practically nothing and now I'm going to lose the only thing I could have had. And I didn't even leave a physical proof of our love that could stay with you for the rest of your life... Please, when you think of me, do it with love... I don't want to leave knowing that there is hate in you...
(Diane, red-eyed and tear-filled, places one of her white hands on Sam's cheek, wipes away his tears with the other and kisses him, tenderly and slowly. Tears run down their cheeks and little by little, her heart rates begin to drop to zero. When only a steady beep is heard, the door opens and, in a light background, the Grim Reaper is seen)
(...)
(Days later, Woody, Sam, Norm, Cliff, Helen and Heather mourn the loss of Diane at her funeral)
Priest: We are here to say goodbye to not only a great woman, but also to a great friend...
(...)
(Time later, at night and in the cemetery, Norm is in front of the grave of "Diane Chambers, 1955-1996" with an old thick book in one hand and a mug of beer in the other)
Norm: (Quietly) C'mon, this oughta work... (As he recites a spell, he moves the beer mug and dances a little) Manatwuri...! Kalabisanti...! Diane...! Goldo! Wingya!
(As Norm pronounces these words, a white light forms over Diane's grave and Norm faints from fright. Gradually, the light begins to take shape until Diane is seen sitting on her tombstone, looking sideways in confusion. Seeing Norm, Diane panics)
Diane: Norman! (Runs to him, worried) Norman, are you all right?
(As he comes to, Norm looks at her)
Norm: (Confused) Diane? (He is surprised and laughs) Diane!
Diane: (As she looks around, confused) What are we doing... (sees the tombstone) here...?
Norm: Diane, it's Sammy, you gotta help me!
(Diane, realizing that she has died and that Sam is probably having trouble with alcohol again, runs away)
(...)
(Nervous and worried, Diane enters Cheers and Carla, seeing her, screams as if her soul was being ripped from her body and falls stiffly to the floor)
Norm: (Panting at the top of the stairs) No... Sammy... He's home...
(Diane, nervous and worried, runs up the stairs)
Diane: Check if I killed Carla!
(...)
(Arriving home, Diane notices that Sam is not in the living room and looks in the kitchen, but it is empty. Before checking the basement and the workshop, Diane enters the bedroom, and, to her surprise, Sam is not drinking, but in bed... WITH CLIFF! Both completely naked! At the sight of them, Diane screams traumatized and Sam and Cliff scream in fright)
(...)
(Startled, Diane wakes up screaming and drenched in sweat as the monitors are heard beeping rapidly. Startled, Sam wakes up)
Sam: (Scared) Diane! What happened?! A nightmare?!
(Hearing the screams, some nurses enter the room, but seeing Diane nodding, Sam indicates to them that they can leave, as if to imply that he is in control of the situation. Due to the trauma and nerves, Diane's mouth begins to twist to the side)
Sam: What the hell did you dream about?! You look like you're about to have a heart attack!
(Diane grabs her cheek while breathing shakily and looks at him, completely traumatized)
Diane: I died... And Norm... (Pulls her hand away from her cheek and pauses to breathe) He brought me back... (Stops to breathe) When I came back... you were doing it... (Stops to breathe, completely traumatized) With Cliff...
Sam: (Outraged, sickened and angry, he stands up, holding his hands to his head) "With Cliff"?! Ugh, that's gross! What's wrong with you?! What kind of drugs are they putting you on?! Yuck...!
(Diane looks at him upset and turns her face, still not believing what she has dreamed)
Diane: I don't think I'll ever get over this trauma in my whole life. It's worse than the poisoning...
*Author's note. Diane's nightmare is a reference to the 1987 movie Hello Again, in which Shelley Long stars. In the scene where they are in the cemetery, the beginning of the main theme of the movie would play ( watch?v=h5ENVDh9aHs).
