A/N: My trip is postponed and I am one grateful human being. I have 2 whole days totally to myself. Now you get another chapter right on the heels of the last two!
CHAPTER 5
Calleigh grinned back at Natalia, and Eric also cracked a smile beside her. Eric knew, but Nat and Ryan did not—she was a master at this game.
As such a private person, others forever expressed surprise at her willingness to play, and usually assumed she would refuse to answer their questions, so she almost always picked Truth, and almost always chose to answer (much to everyone's shock, again). It's one of the ways she, Speed, and Eric got to know each other so well in the early days.
As for dares, people correctly predicted her fearlessness, therefore proposed impossible dares…which she also never turned down. She once licked the bathroom handle on a moving charter bus. Speed almost lost his lunch on that one.
"Truth," Calleigh replied.
"Ugh," Natalia sighed. "I was hoping you'd say Dare! I came up with a good one."
"Save it for Ryan, he's so keen on Truth or Dare. Now, hit me. Truth."
"Okay, okay. Standard question because I can't think of one. How old were you when you had your first kiss?" Natalia asked.
Calleigh's smile widened and she laughed. "Easy. I was five. Kindergarten playground, the typical first love story."
"Kevin Lewis," Eric added with a laugh of his own. "Love of Cal's life until second grade when he kissed Lucy something-or-other on the cheek on the school bus."
Calleigh scowled playfully and punched him in the arm. "Thanks for the reminder."
Natalia and Ryan both now grinned, and Natalia asked, "How did you know that, Eric?"
"We've known each other for eleven years," Calleigh said matter-of-factly.
"Comes with the territory," Eric added with a sly shrug of his shoulders and a crooked smile in Calleigh's direction.
Natalia rolled her eyes. "This is Two Truths and a Lie all over again. We don't stand a chance."
"My turn!" Calleigh only said in reply. The mischief in her eyes said it all.
"Ryan, I choose you. Truth, or dare?"
Realizing Calleigh clearly outmatched him, and feeling quite hoodwinked, he knew better than to choose Dare when she held all the power.
"Truth."
"Good answer," she smirked. "When was the last time you actually got laid?"
Ryan immediately turned crimson. "Did Calleigh Duquesne just ask me about my sex life at work?"
Natalia rolled with peals of laughter. "Where's HR?"
Eric couldn't wait to hear this. "We're in the building. But we're not on the clock."
Mortification flooded Ryan's features in the lamp light. With Natalia on one side and "Mr. Ladies Man" across from him, Ryan hated to answer. He could lie, but they knew his tells.
"This is a stupid question, but fine. Six months ago. Happy?"
If Ryan only knew how little his coworkers judged him. With their hours and the emotional toll their job took on them, dating never seemed to be high on the priority list.
Ryan assumed Eric's focus on Calleigh probably slowed the rate of his hookups, but he had no idea Eric hadn't been with another woman in almost two years. The shooting changed him, as did his growing feelings for his partner.
Calleigh swore off men after Jake. And let her not forget the unspoken attraction to Eric which she hadn't fully acted on but couldn't ignore, either. Random sex never did appeal to her, but even if she had the opportunity, it seemed like cheating somehow. If that didn't speak volumes to her about how she felt toward Eric…but she kept that secret hidden from even herself most days.
Then Natalia, well Natalia still reeled from her abusive marriage and the aftermath of Nick's death. She didn't trust easily and therefore the men in her life were few and far between.
Calleigh nodded her head and chuckled in Ryan's direction. "Thank you for your honesty, sir."
"I can't believe you got a cop-out question and I got that," Ryan huffed.
"Hey, you made me go first," Natalia defended. "I had zero time to come up with a question!"
Eric interrupted. "We're going to be here all day. You're up, Ryan."
"Technically, we already are here all day," Ryan clarified.
"Just go!"
Ryan never hesitated, pinning Eric with eyes gleaming from the light of their so-called 'campfire.'
"Okay, Delko. Truth…or dare?"
Eric trusted Wolfe about as much as the criminals they hauled in off the streets right now. But, he agreed to play, mostly because Calleigh asked him to. And because Wolfe piqued his curiosity.
"Dare. I still don't know what you can come up with in here," he said, gesturing beyond him into the darkness.
Ryan never dropped his gaze from Eric's.
"I dare you to show us the most private thing you keep hidden in your locker..."
