Hey guys, I know I'm so sorry for this late update. I've just been super busy with changing jobs and training and stuff. This chapter isn't want you expected and I hope you don't hate it.
Hope l your Christmas shopping is coming to an end and you haven't spent too much money like I have. My dogs are spoilt AF.
Anyway here is the next chapter... ENJOY!!!
Two months had passed and it was my proper first appointment at the doctors. Lucas was by my side. He sat tapping his feet and I could feel. His excitement and his nerves at the same time. He clutched onto my hand and I smiled at him feeling all these feelings that I felt with the twins.
The nurse called my name. Lucas stood up before me and helped me to my feet and we headed into the office. Lucas glanced around the room then he glanced at me and I gave a warm smile and he smiled back.
"Hi there Brooke" Nurse Samantha said. I read her name badge "so this is your first appointment am I correct?"
I nod "yes this is"
"Here it says that you had twins a few years ago?" I nod again "okay so you know how this procedure goes?"
I nod again "yes I do, but for him it's all different. This is my boyfriend Lucas"
Samantha smiled in his direction "okay well welcome Lucas. All we are doing here today is to check on baby and make sure things are okay. Nothing major" Samantha explains "just a regular check up" Samantha then lifts up my shirt above my still flat stomach "this will be cold" I nod as she squeezed it onto my stomach and then started using the device.
For a moment she was just moving it around and still for a little longer and then a smile formed on her lips and my heart relaxed "okay so right there is your baby" Samantha pointed to the monitor where a little bean was.
"Oh wow" Lucas says focusing on the monitor "it's so small"
"Yeah, but it'll grow" Samantha replies "is this your first Lucas?"
"Nah he is the father of the twins, but he was in an accident when I found out and couldn't be there for any of it" I answer "so this is all new to him"
"Oh well at least you can enjoy all of it this time" Samantha smiled "So would you like pictures?"
"Yes please" Lucas answered and then leaned down and placed a kiss to my lips.
"I'll go print those off for you and here" she handed me some tissue "for your stomach. Also once I'm back you are free to leave and make a new appointment at reception for your next scan"
Samantha left and Lucas wiped the gel from my stomach "I'm so happy to be here with you Brooke"
"I know Luke. Me too"
"So I was thinking we should go to the cabin and have some friend bonding because everything has been hectic lately and I think Naley would benefit from it a lot"
"I think that is such a good idea" I agreed "have you spoken to Jake about it?"
He nodded "this morning before we left and he agreed too and I think he said he was talking to Peyton about it"
"Then I am on board completely. Can you call Nathan?"
"I will"
"Okay so these are for you" Samantha came back into the room and handed Lucas the pictures "just book with Laura and I'll see you next time"
We thanked Samantha and then left. Lucas drive us home where Lily and Karen were looking after the twins. Lucas stayed outside to call Nathan and I headed inside.
"Mommy" both twins came running down the corridor towards me "Nanny made cookies with us" they pulled in my hands "come" I followed them down the hall to the kitchen.
"Oh hi Brooke" Karen says taking off the oven gloves I did wonder why it went quiet"
"Smells amazing in here"
"It's the cookies" Lily says "Where's Luke?"
"On the phone outside" I reply "thank you for looking after them Karen"
"Oh it's a pleasure always" she waves it off "so how is baby?"
"Good. Just a little bean for now" I reply "want to see a picture?"
The Twins nod as does Lily and I show them.
"Mommy" Wynter says looking between the picture then to me "where is baby?" I laugh and point to a small bean "that very small Mommy" I laugh again
"The baby will grow Winnie" Lily tells her "like you did"
"Really?" Lily nods and Wynter turns to me "mommy really?"
"Of course baby girl" I kiss her forehead "when I eat or drink I feed baby and they grow just like you and brother did"
"Wow" she grasps "Did you hear that Wy" Wyatt nodded and a shocked look on his face too making us laugh.
"Okay Lil we better head off" Karen says "I still need to talk to you and Luke about something really important" Karen says grabbing her bag and slinging it on her shoulder "dinner tonight if possible. The Twins And Lil can okay in Lil's room"
"Yeah okay sure" I nod "is everything okay Karen?"
She nodded "yeah I just need to talk with you guys about something that's all"
"Okay" I give her and Lil and hug and they head out just as Lucas came in. He also said bye and they left.
"So Nathan and Haley are down for the cabin thing" Lucas says
"Should we bring the twins?" I suggest "I mean they aren't really a bother and it's not like it's going to be a made one"
"That is very true with you and Peyt pregnant" he adds "the yes the twins will come with us. You know how much they love Peyton"
"Yeah they do huh?" I smoke at that "so we are going to your mom's for dinner, she has something important to talk about"
"Did she just say that?" I nod "okay that sounds not too good, but we'll see later"
"Daddy" Wynter came running into the kitchen "juice please"
Lucas grabbed a juice from the fridge and pierced the top with the straw for her before handing it to her. She smiled "here you go princess"
"Thank you Daddy" he kissed her cheek and she bounced off.
"You are so good with them Luke. I love how you just fit straight in with the dad role" he comes over and wraps his hands around my waist and placed a soft kiss to my lips.
"You made it easy for me Pretty girl" he says "my life from the crash has been easy because of you and I love you so much for that" he kissed me again "so thank you for everything"
"I wouldn't have it any other way"
We got to Karen's at 7 after getting the twins ready and ourselves too. It used to be hard work with just me or something Peyton would be home to help me get both of them ready, but now Lucas and I tag team. He'll take Wyatt and I'll take Wynter. Life just seemed so much better now that we are a family of four soon to be five.
"Nanny!" both twins ran in and down the corridor
"Ma" Lucas called out.
"in the kitchen. Food is ready" Karen called back
We sat down and ate as a family. It was nice hearing about how well Lil is doing in school and how the cafe is doing and stuff. Family time is always nice.
Once dinner was over Lily took the twins into her room to play while Lucas and helped Karen clean up. Everything was done and Karen had just sit down on the sofa in the living room.
Okay now my heart hammered against my chest. I didn't know what she was going to say.
"So I have some news" she says and my heart sank. I felt Lucas's touch go sweaty on my hand "I've been having some tests at the doctors lately and it turns out I have stage 4 breast cancer"
I grasped as my breath got caught in my throat and my eyes filled with tears "what... I mean how.. I'm sorry I'm just" I didn't know what to say.
"Luke I know this is hard and it's going to be hard and I get that" Karen says and all sort of thoughts were running through my mind at this point.
"When did you find out you had cancer?" Lucas asks
"I found a lump last year, but you were in a coma and Brooke was raising the twins and I didn't want to bother you with these concerns and I wasn't going to bother you until my appointment the other week where the doctor said that it has spread and that the treatment is not and has not been working"
"Wait.. Wait what do you mean the treatment is not working? Spread? Ma what are you trying to tell us right now?"
"I have everything sorted out Luke. I have named you and Brooke Lily's guardians and she will live with you guys and this house I have put in your name to do with what you like and also the cafe is yours too. I had my lawyer sort it all out"
"Just... Just Ma please stop a moment" I saw tears fill his eyes "we can get a second opinion. I mean we can't just give up ma"
"Lucas" Karen stands to her feet and walks over to her so and kneels down in front of him and takes his hands in hers "I know you're scared because I was too, but I've come to terms with my fate now and I need you to be super strong for Lily"
"I know she will be safe with you and Brooke. I have no doubts how much love you guys will give her"
"Of course" a tear falls down my cheek as my heart broke into a million pieces "you don't ever have to worry about Lily"
"I didn't think any different Brooke" Karen turned to me and smiled "the day you and Lucas became friends and I met you I knew you and Lucas would be great together. I knew I wanted you as my daughter in law and I thank you a whole lot being there for Lucas even through his crash and coma and giving him two perfect children and carrying another"
"Thank you for welcoming me into your family" tears just started falling.
"How long have we erm... How long have you got?" Lucas asked wiping at his face.
"6-12 months if I'm lucky" Karen replies "as soon as I do deteriorated everything is signed over to you guys and Lily can be moved into your house, sooner to settled her in if possible. This will shake her and I need you both to be strong for her please. She doesn't know anything other than me"
"I can't... I can't lose you Ma" Lucas says holding onto his mom's hands "what are we gonna do. How do I do this without you. You won't see the twins grow up or the unborn baby. You won't be at the baby's first birthday or their graduation or anything. And what about Lily. You won't see her grow up or become what she wants to be"
"I know" Karen nods sadly "I know I won't and it sucks. It really does, but there is not much I can do about it Luke. I can just be here now for all of you until I can't anymore"
"This can't be happening" Lucas says shaking his head "this really can not be happening"
"Mommy why you crying?" Wynter asks none of us knowing she was there stood at the door.
"come here baby" I hold out my hands and she runs over "give daddy a big hug and a kiss" she did just that and he buried his face into her small neck.
"Does Lily know?" I ask thinking I already knew the answer. Karen shook her head.
Lily was 6 and old enough to kind of understand how the world works. And if Karen doesn't tell her then Lucas and I will need to think of a way to tell her without being so straight about it.
I have to be the string one because if Lucas breaks down or Lily I want to be that security blanket for them both.
