Chapter 4: Wylan

Wylan made his way to his rooms to get changed into something more appropriate, he was not expecting visitors. He couldn't believe his reaction to meeting Inej's parents. He had gawked at them and couldn't find his words, then he had just invited them to breakfast, all while wearing his nightwear.

Once he had found something more appropriate to be seen in, he made his way to his father's, no, his study. It still felt incredibly strange to see this house as his. It felt wrong, like he hadn't earned it, and really he didn't. He had taken the dregs way of doing things, he stole it. He was pleased that his father got what he deserved, and his wealth was Wylan's payment for all the mistreatment he endured, but in the back of his head he still heard his fathers voice telling him he wasn't good enough.

This quietened when he finally got his mother back. She was amazing. It took her a while to readjust to life back in the Van Eck house hold but slowly he was seeing more and more of who she used to be. Having his mother back home, back with him, had made it all worthwhile. He was free from his father's judgment and she was free from that pit his father had left her in.

He heard a soft knock at the door and told who ever it was to come in. He wasn't doing anything anyway, what could he do, he couldn't read the reports or right responses. The door opened and Jasper made his way to the desk.

"Hey, want some help?" Jasper asked him in a way that it didn't feel condescending, like he was stupid and couldn't do anything without help, he asked like a friend would.

"Sure." He replied with a smile and Jasper sat on the edge of the desk and read the first thing he picked up.

"This one is an invitation to a dinner party that the merch's hold to celebrate Ghezen. Do you wanna go?" Jasper gave him a look that suggested it was the last thing he was interested in but he'll still let Wylan decide.

"It might be good to be seen taking my new role seriously, but you'll have to come with me."

"So it's a no to this invitation." He said throwing the paper into the waste basket next to the deck.

"Jasper?" Wylan complained as he fished it back out. "It's a good idea to be seen at events like this and I Cant go without you. What would I do if someone asks me to read something?"

"Say you forgot your glasses." Jasper retorted.

"Seriously-"

"Fine," Jasper interrupted, "I'll go with you to your stupid party."

"Don't look so sad, it could be fun."

"And what sort of fun could I have there?" Jasper complained pulling a sour face.

"Think of all the pigeons you can con out of their money, or the foods you'll get to try, or the-"

Jasper interrupted again before he finished his list. "Okay, okay. You had me at conning pigeons. I guess it would be fun to see how much I can get out of them all. But won't they recognise me from all those wanted posters."

"As far as they are concerned, you're there to assist me, I doubt they'll care about anything else." Wylan reassured him. They shared a smile, then his mind went back to the awkward conversation Inej must be having down the hall. "Do you think she's alright?" He asked, knowing Jasper was probably thinking about the same thing.

"I don't know, I remember the conversation with my da being awkward as hell, but Inej thinks differently, she's far more honest than me, and she has better reasons for the way her life turned out." Jasper replied.

"Ya, but I still don't think it was a good idea to have Kaz with her. Surely it would be better said in private."

"Maybe, but I think Kaz will help her keep honest. He may not be the most sensitive of people but he won't hold back the truth, not if that's what she wants."

They both sat in quite a little longer, Wylan thinking about how much all their lives have changed since the beginning of that heist. Jasper reconnected with his father, Wylan found his mother, Nina found and lost Matthias, and somehow Inej was reunited with her parents. How though? It was like they just appeared out of the blue to make Inej's dreams come true. They said that Sturmhond found them. Did Kaz make a deal with him to look for them? If so, then his feelings for Inej ran much deeper than Wylan first thought. He was really ready to let her go if that made her happy.

"Kaz is amazing." Wylan stated, breaking the silence they found themselves in.

"What makes you say that?" Jasper asked a note of confusion in his voice.

"Well, he must of been the one who informed Sturmhond about Inej's situation and got him looking in the first place." Wylan said, voicing his thoughts.

"Ya, probably." Understanding dawning on Jasper's face. "And I get what you mean, he's a strong man for letting her go like that. I don't think I could do that."

"I hope not." Wylan blurted out before he could think better of it. He could feel his cheeks reddening as Jasper gave him a look of amused surprise.

"So that's why you insisted I go to that damn dinner party." Jasper taunted, a grin spreading across his face. "Couldn't bear to be without me?"

"Shut up." Wylan moaned turning an even brighter shade of red.

Jasper moved from his place on the desk and walked around. He sat back on it directly in front of Wylan and pulled the chair closer. He bent down so his face was hovering just above Wylan's. "I'm not complaining." He whispered, then closed the gap so their lips touched.

The kiss was soft, warm, but Wylan wanted more. He rose from his chair without breaking the kiss and stood between Jasper's legs, deepening the kiss and snaking his around Jasper's neck.

Jasper was happy to indulge him, he tilted Wylan's head back and gently prodded his lips with his tongue. Wylan opened up for him and they were blissfully making out, completely distracted from the mess they called breakfast.
