Sequel to the canon-divergent and early-Zuko-join fic Catalyst, Catastrophe starts at the beginning of book 3 and follows the Gaang through to Day of Black Sun. Zuko continues to wrestle with his feelings toward the Fire Nation, his family, his friends, Katara, and the war as the time for the invasion arrives, and what it means to finally be "good."

When Zuko and Sokka meet as children after the Southern Water Tribe is not only invaded, but conquered by the Fire Nation, they realize unlikely alliances can be formed in war. Now, the boys can let the differences between their families and cultures bring them together to stop the bloodshed or allow the years of hatred to win before the war is even won.

The exchange in Omashu goes anything but how Azula expected it to. Spirit shenanigans ensue, and suddenly the princess of the Fire Nation finds herself shrunken down to her child form.

The military dissatisfied with the current branch of the royal line seeks to eventually replace it with their preferred who the Avatar happens to hail from once he becomes a full-fledged Avatar. The Prior Fire Lord in an attempt to avoid the mistakes of the last to Avatars banned the White Lotus.
