"Mmm... Damn, I think I've found myself a new favorite snack. I gotta make this at one point. One more recipe for the book, I guess."

- Ren, after eating a fresh Lungmen cheese dumpling

CHAPTER 5

PASTS OF TWO

9:07 A.M / Slightly Cloudy

Monster Siren Records, Lungmen Branch

"Hah...Hah... golly! Ya actually managed to keep up with the Bullhead Croissant! Color me impressed, Doctor!

"Same here, Doctor, you don't really look all that fit, but you sure are speedy. Want a drink?"

"Appreciate it, Exusiai."

Ren has no idea where did Exusiai conjure up a bottle of water, since she carried nothing resembling a bag of sorts, but he accepted it readily regardless. The angelic girl wasn't kidding about Croissant being very fast on a bike, and couple that with his weak physique, it took a great amount of effort to keep up with the Forte girl AND keep up a facade that he was all fine. A futile attempt considering the amount of sweat dripping on his face.

This entire trip can be exercise however, and Ren can only smile dryly as he drank the water with vigor. He clearly overexerted himself, and Rome wasn't built in a day, especially when it one's physique stuck in a coffin. After passing the half-empty bottle back to Exusiai, Ren dropped off his bike, prompting the two other girls two follow. With their bikes neatly parked, the Doctor looked on to their destination.

"Monster Siren Records..."

Monster Siren Records. Anyone from where he came from would recognize the name of the company itself, dishing out a variety of music from various genres like rap, rock, metal, pop, orchestral, and just about any genre one can think of. According to their website on Earth, they're based in literally the middle of nowhere in Terra. Ren actually asked Exusiai where Monster Siren Records is based at, and to his delight, Monster Siren Records is headquartered at Columbia, which is the Terran equivalent of America.

Plus, There's literally a place called Nowhere in America, so it checks out.

When it came to the building itself, it was much like any other famed music company, with a well decored outer backdrop of black and yellow on a 2-story building complete with a sizable parking lot. A transceiver tower is built at the roof, possibly for radio transmissions. Monster Siren Records probably has its own radio station, and according to Exusiai, MSR has branches at every major country and city.

"So, what ya think of our boss' building? Real fancy spot, right?"

With Croissant and Exusiai taking his sides, the Doctor swiftly replied. "Well, Fanciest spot I've seen so far, that's certain. What do you say we go and meet Emperor? Where's he?"

"He says he's at the Deluxe Records Room. You'll definitely like the inside more than outside, Doc! Let's go!"

With the cheery angel leading the way, Ren and Croissant followed after her, entering the building and zooming past the reception hall, much to the receptionist's chagrin. The halls were colored in burnt gold paint, and golden records lined the walls, showcasing the achievements of the Emperor in its full glory. Whoever this Emperor is, Ren had to pay full respect to him for getting this many golden records. Just how good he was at rap, and as a music director?

It didn't take long for the trio to arrive at the Deluxe Records Room, located at the end of the hall and inscribed on the door's silver plate. Beyond the door, Ren can hear the melodious singing of a female, going by a cheery tune. It's clear she's singing pop, and whoever's singing is doing well.

"Oh, Sora's singin' today? Man, our resident idol really be enjoyin' herself in there!"

"Sora?"

Exusiai took this as a cue to run explanations. "She's our 3rd member of our glorious logistics company! A well-known idol and a very capable singer! She's also our runner and spokesperson when we try negotiating for stuff. Boss values her real well because of it!"

"That so? Any chance for us to sing a duet?"

"Hahahah! Only if Boss allows it! He ain't takin' any random bozos out of nowhere, and right now, ya definitely fit in that category!"

Ren can only smirk at Croissant's reply. If anything, he took that as a challenge, and he's definitely not going to take being called a bozo lying down. For now, he simply waited for Sora to finish her session, and it ended on a good note too.

That is, if Croissant didn't barge into the studio while dragging him and Exusiai with her. "Boss! We're back, and we wrangled the Doc with us!"

The voice that replied to Croissant sounded displeased as it turned to face them "Ey, Croissant! Least you have the decency to barge in when we're done producing! Can't have you fucking with my flow, you hear?"

Anyone on Earth with common sense would probably lose it once they realize that the person who spoke was a genuine emperor penguin. There was absolutely nothing that resembled human looks on him unlike Croissant. Even more since he's wearing a T-shirt bearing the full face of Tupac of all people, a beanie on his head, and shades. Of course, Having lived with Morgana for so long, Ren wasn't any bit surprised by the Emperor's appearance, if Croissant's call was any accurate.

"Uhh...boss? Isn't it my flow we're talking about? I mean, it's my song!"

Ren's eyes then turned to the other girl in the group, a yellow haired girl with wolf ears jutting out of her hair which is tied into twintails. She was all dressed in a frilly dress on the bottom side with large sleeves, paired with slim boots. She's the only girl in the room when they arrived so she must be the one singing earlier. The Doctor had to give credit that she sings well.

"Uh...right, you're the one flowing, and I'm the one directing it to greatness. Anyway! This punk here s'posed to be the Doctor? You sure the lil' rabbit didn't fuck up? Cause he ain't showin anything worth!"

Before Ren can bite back with a witty comeback, Croissant butted back in. "Boss, ya know what they bout them books and covers? Did ya forget how he bailed us two from the finball guy? Plus, Dr. Ren may not lookit, but he managed to keep up with me at full charge! Heck, Exia here's me live witness!"

"She's right, boss! Plus, judging by how he acted with us, he'd be good buddies with us in no time!"

Emperor stared at both Croissant and Exusiai, then to Ren at pure disbelief before sighing. "Well, if my girls say you're good, then you're also in my good graces, Doc. Now that all's well in the hood, speak. What's the favor that lil' Amiya want us to do, eh?"

To Ren, the whole interaction didn't mean that all is well in the hood, but he'll take what he can get. "Call it a bit of covert ops. I need you and your girls to find me some rogues in Lungmen. Ever heard of Reunion?"

The mood grew darker as soon as Ren mentioned the name of the target. Everyone stared at him, even Emperor as he dipped his shades down to see him better. "Reunion? Them crazy asses that blew our neighbor sky high? You tryna tell me you people got involved in their bullshit?"

"More like, they got involved in our bullshit, and that bullshit centers around me. Hell, Reunion actually tried to recruit me!"

Every girl present looked at Ren in surprise, yet Emperor seemed nonplussed as he set his shades back in place. "I see. I tell ya what, what did ya do when tried to recruit your ass? Depending on your answer, you'll be screaming back to your momma in 30 seconds all marked up in bruises."

"I respectfully declined their offer, then roasted their leaders physically and mentally when they tried to force me. Is that the right answer?"

The penguin laughed at Ren's confident answer. "Really? A regular-ass punk like you making the Reunion honchos run between their legs? I must have cotton on my eyelids!"

"I have my ways to make them run. I don't know if Amiya told you what I'm capable of, but I sure am going to show you if you help me out. What do you say?"

The reply only made Emperor scoff, yet not out of a demeaning attitude. "You know what I say, Doc? That your lips are smooth enough to dish out some slimy bars. Think you and us are gonna get along just fine. Don't expect me to kiss your ass though. You still have a long way up my ladder of respect, ya got it?"

"Believe me, I don't want you kissing ass anytime soon."

By that point, the mood in the studio had settled down into chillness, The Penguin Logistics girls are all relieved that such a upstanding and fun person was not someone they have to waste anytime soon, and for Ren, it's all good in the hood between him and the Emperor now. A hand held his shoulder from the side, and he saw Exusiai smiling at him from there.

"You really had us sweating bullets, Doctor! Honestly, I didn't want to pepper you with actual bullets if you were a Reunion spy. You seem and are so nice!"

Ren let out a chuckle. "Believe me. If I actually was a spy, I'd be the highest grossing actor on Terra, and nobody can compete. After seeing what Reunion did, I won't be joining them, unless I'm reforming them from the ground up."

The twintailed girl, Sora, spoke up. "And how would you reform them...Doctor Ren, was it?"

"I have my ways, but when I'm done, I'll make sure they'll end up fighting against true injustice against the Infected."

"Mysterious ways, huh? You certainly fit that description. Maybe..." She quickly shook her head before stretching her hand out. "Anyway, you definitely haven't known me yet. My name's Sora, up and coming idol! Nice to meet you, Doctor!"

Ren shook Sora's hand as proper courtesy. "Good to meet you too, Sora. And, on the contrary, Exusiai and Croissant here already told me things about you. You sing very well, by the way."

"Really?! Happy to know you like it Doctor! Let me tell you, I can sing in various genres, like pop, rock, jazz, and even a little-"

"Hold up there, Sora. I get that you're excited over our new partner, but this ain't no meet n' greet. You two can get all close and personal once we're done with business. We cool on that?"

"...Not that close." A pout can be seen as Sora let go of Ren's hand and stepped back to Emperor's side, who is sitting on a rolling chair with a flipper resting on the arms.

"Alright, now that the sappy shit is out of the way, let's talk business. What does Rhodes want with us this time? Also! Croissant! Roll a chair by for this man!"

Croissant hurriedly rolled a chair for Ren to sit on, right in front of the Emperor. Ren himself decided to open up with his answer. "Alright, for starters, since you guys already heard of the Chernobog fiasco, imma just spit it out. Rhodes has gathered evidence that this very town is next on their hit list."

The girls around adopted a serious look, while Emperor let out a huff. "They're goin' after Lungmen next, eh? Figured they'd be getting high after busting up a big city like Cherno. What you want us to do?"

"For that, I want you guys to help us out with recon, and if possible, any further operations we have on Lungmen in the future. I already have some guys on the field, and I prefer if we keep the L.G.D out of this."

Croissant, who was standing right next to Ren, much like Exusiai, stared at him wide eyed. "Hol'up. I get why yer not involvin' the L.G.D and all, but wouldn't it better to ring the bells on em' for something this huge?!"

"Well, if we did involve the LGD, Croissant, we'd end up being practical lap dogs for their every whim. I sure as hell don't want to end up being exactly that, so I wanna beat them at their own game." Ren's lips curved into a smirk. "Once we show the LGD that Reunion is hiding in their city, as well as why they're here, they'd have no choice but work with us on equal terms, with no way to refute us."

An amazed "ooh" came out of Croissant once she heard of the Doctor's plans, along with looks of amazement from both Exusiai and Sora. Even Emperor had an impressed look on his face. "Well, well, well. Quite the plan ya cooked up there, Doc. While me and my girls don't have any beef with Wei's posse of feds, I'll take any chance to stick anything up that Lung's haughty ass to 7th heaven."

Ren was close to cracking a laugh at Emperor's admission. While he did say that Penguin Logistics has no conflict with the L.G.D, the penguin himself certainly has personal beef with Wei himself for reasons unknown. His musings however were interrupted. "But! That doesn't mean I'll accept your deal so easily like some limp simp. I'll loan my girls for your ops if you do me a favor for yours truly."

Of course a deal had to be made. "And what favor is it?"

"Call it a branch out. I don't mind loaning my girls over to your side because of Lil' Amiya, but you gotta remember. I'm Terra's god of rap. Even though I'm making enough moolah to put them corporate fucks grovelin' on my feet, going solo can only stay hip for so long. MRS here is how I allow folks to bask in the greatness of music." Emperor raised his flipper towards Sora. "Sora here is our up and coming star. Chick here shows a lot of promise, but we need more oomph before this bird can fly, and I can't have her be our running lady all the time. You find a way to get her everlasting stroke, and we'll be forever business partners. What ya say?"

Ren closed his eyes as he mulled over the Emperor's favor. Unbeknownst to everyone barring his Personas and Shadow though, his brain thought on grinning over how convenient their deal is in his favor. He's already planning to start a band with Vigna, and if he signs this deal, not only will he be forever allies with Penguin Logistics, but having Sora in their band will also bring huge boost to their credibility and make Sora more famous at once. It's a win-win situation!

'Hahahaha... Truly, you are blessed with luck on the coincidental, Trickster."

'Gotta agree with tall, dark, and terrifying here, buddy. This could actually be your big hit, and it's on a silver platter!'

'What you waiting for, ho? Just hop in and say yes to the ho-ffer, hee-ho!'

While the parade of agreements in Ren's head ensued, the idol in question shifted uncomfortably as she looked towards Emperor. "Uh...boss, I know you're looking out for me, but you're practically using me as a bargaining chip. Wouldn't it be better if-"

"...On the contrary, Sora. I'd be happy to help you rise to stardom, and I have just the right plan."

Emperor scoffed lightheartedly while Sora looked at Ren, utterly dumbfounded. "Then enlighten us masses. What's your plan for helping our good girl here rise to the stars?" Ren grinned at the question.

"You see, Emperor. A few days ago, me and a friend of mine planned to start our own rock band together, and we're sorely lacking in members. Sora, you said you can do rock as well, right?"

"Huh?! Uh... Yes! Yes I can!"

Ren's grin grew wider. "You heard her, Emperor. If Sora's in my rock band, we'll be able to boost her popularity as our band keeps on growing. After enough time, Sora will be flying up the charts right by your side as we rise to stardom. All we need now is a few more members, and a benefactor to get us rolling. So, why not be our benefactor on top? A good trade offer, no?"

Emperor went silent after hearing the counter offer that Ren proposed, as if he's gauging his options on whether to accept. In the end, he just laughed in a rich baritone. "I knew I was right to think of you as a sleazy bastard, Doc. Playin' up words so well I'll end up going by your rules. But what can I do? You win, I win, all's fair in love, war, and commerce. I'll agree with your terms. Happy?"

"Happy as I can ever be."

The human and penguin got off their seats and shook their hands afterward, or hand and flipper as they agreed on their terms of cooperation. Everyone who became a witness had various expressions. Exusiai was smiling her usual smile, Croissant was giving a thumbs up to the Doctor, and Sora was ecstatic to dive into a new genre of music that the Doctor will provide. It's all good for everyone!

That is, until Sora realized something.

"Wait. Does this mean I'll be a Rhodes Island employee too?"

Ren, who is seated back in place, nodded. "That's right, and it's either the Combat or Logistics Department, Sora. We can't really wreck your image much though, so you'll probably end up in Logistics."

There was something in Sora's expression that the Doctor can't figure out, but hesitance is clear enough for him. "Then again, whether you end up in Logistics or Combat is still up in the air, so let's just cross the bridge when we get there, okay?

That seemed to do the trick, as Sora regained her cheer as she nodded. "Mhm!"

"Heh, look at you, being all buddy-buddy with our rising star already, Sora may be a star, but what of you, Doc? You say you're starting a band, yet I haven't seen you jam once. Why don't you go and prove your groove over in the studio, and see if you can get us on the move?"

"You want a jam? I'll give you a jam. Pass me a guitar and I can-"

Ren's words were cut off as his smartphone's ringtone went off, forcing him to answer the call, much to his chagrin.

"Shoot. I better answer this. May I?"

Emperor simply waved him away. "When you're done, you better have a good reason on why your gig got jacked."

Exusiai however looked at him with twinkling eyes. "Oh! Oh! I wanna know your ring tone too! Those are good guitar riffs I just heard!"

"Right, and right. I'll be sure to tell once I'm done."

Giving his assurances, Ren left the studio room with smartphone on hand. Once he knows he's alone, he checked the number of whoever called him, and as it turns out, it was Kevin's new number. Ren let out a sigh as he answered.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Doc? How's it going on your end? You got a deal with this Penguin Logistics yet?"

Kevin's voice rang loud and clear, which is a good sign. "It's all going well here, Kevin. Was about to have a jamming session to sweeten the deal. How about you?"

"Jamming session? I get you got killer guitar skills, but... Never mind. Someone wants to talk to you, Doc. Someone you know."

Forget someone he knows. The fact that Kevin was with someone just means he has been compromised. With a wary tone as the receiver on the other end switched hands, Ren cautiously spoke. "Hello?"

"...Hello, Dr. Ren. Remember me? Quite surprising that we get to meet each other like this, don't you think~?"

The voice on the other line was all too familiar for Ren, and Chernobog came to mind of their encounter. "W. I hope you calling me means you're not gonna rat Kevin out to Reunion unless I come over and blow you up. What have you done to Kevin?"

The sound of giggling can be heard on the other side. "Oh dear. I'm so hurt by your accusation, Doctor~ I just want to know if we can have a private chat. I didn't know you can play the guitar though. By the way, Kevin and his pet cat are fine. I didn't know you resorted to using animals for operations, Doctor~"

Ren can only let out a sigh. Morgana would blow a gasket if he overheard what W said. More importantly however, if W wants a private chat, it means that she's dug up dirt on Reunion's plans. He'll be remiss if he were to pass the chance. "Fine, just give me some time to wrap things up over here, and I'll come over."

"There we go. But if you don't mind, can you come over in a van or something? I have a deserter with me who would love to join your side. Think of it as a favor from me."

A Reunion deserter was something that Ren didn't expect to hear. Whoever this deserter was must have sought her out, and the merc smuggled him out through whatever operation Reunion is doing in Lungmen. At least now it's clear that Reunion is present, but he'll still need proof.

"Only if you take pictures of the Reunion base that you're currently holding out in as recompense. A solid for a solid."

"Okay~ Even though I have more dirt on them than just a few measly pictures anyway. I'll be seeing you later~"

The call was ended then and there, and Ren was left holding his head and sighing over the new set of challenges he must face, that being W and the Reunion deserter. By the time he returned inside the studio, everyone can see the serious expression he had. Exusiai, who wanted to ask, wilted away from questioning since she knew it was a bad time.

"So? Who's the random punk who wanted to mess up your gig, huh?"

"A co-worker of mine who just got busted by one of my agents. Sorry to say, but I can't give you a good one anytime soon. By the way..."

For now, he has to get a transport of some sort for Kevin, Morgana, W, and the deserter, and he's hoping that Emperor can do him this favor.

"Does Penguin Logistics have a vehicle that can fit at least 6 people and a cat, driver included?"

- Take Your Time -

9:20 A.M / Sunny

"So, all we have to do is wait for this Texas girl to come back from cargo delivery?"

"Uh-huh! And don't worry. Since Emperor dialed her back here, she'll be back in record time, no problem!"

Ren can't help but tap his foot anxiously waiting for the so-called Texas to come back from her delivery service, and not a moment too soon considering that the fate of Kevin and Morgana is in W's hands. While her allegiance towards Reunion is already known to him and they trust each other enough to make deals with one another, that alone is not enough when W herself is a tricky individual to handle. He needs to ensure that Kevin and Morgana are safe and sound, firsthand.

"Feeling anxious, Doctor? What's wrong?"

Ren turned to face Exusiai, who was standing on his right, staring at him worriedly with her arms behind her back. "It's nothing. I'm just worried for my folks over on site. My undercover agent on site can be quite the tricky individual, and I prefer not to leave my guys with her any longer than necessary."

"Tricky girl, huh? Well, you managed to get her under your belt, so I'm sure you'll be able to keep her in line, right?"

"Well, can't guaranteed that, Exusiai. She's quite something."

The cheery angel hummed thoughtfully at the remark, leaving Ren to continue waiting for Texas to return from her duties. Taking his phone out, he decided to swim through his contacts. The only contacts he had were from Philemon, Zenkichi, Amiya, and Kevin.

Mental note of the day, trade contacts with as much of his associates as possible, as fast as possible. Maybe he should go for Exusiai for a start...

"Say, Doctor. I didn't manage to tell you anything at all about Texas, huh?"

Ren turned his head again. Learning about the 4th person in Penguin Logistics, bar Emperor should be a good way to pass the time. "Sure. The usual summarized way?"

"You know it!" The cheery angel nodded enthusiastically. "Okay! Texas is, to put it simply, our most reliable worker here in our company! You want bodyguard duty, and she'll make sure no one even touches you! You want cargo delivered? She'll deliver everything on time with nothing to spare!"

An amused smile graced Ren's face. "Hmmhm. She seems like a real great employee. There's gotta be a down to her with all those ups, no?"

"Uh-huh! The only bad part of our Lupo Ice Queen is that, well, she's an ice queen! She'll never say more than a few words, even when you're close! If you're gonna be friends with her, good luck!"

"Probably will need that luck. Is her ice queen status that bad?"

"Doctor, it took me a long time for me to figure out if we're cool or not. Trust me, as smooth as you are, you're gonna have trouble trying to be friends with her!"

If even Exusiai, who looks like she'd blend well at parties, had difficulty being friends with Texas, then he's going to need all the luck he can get. The advice of her best friend is definitely best heeded.

On the subject of Texas' line of work though... "Speaking of which, what was Texas delivering anyway?"

"Just some local produce and metals for our dearest associates, Midsummers' Dream Laboratories! They're a very fun bunch!"

Seeing as both companies are based in Lungmen, it's not surprising at all for both of them to be associates. In fact, they seem to be on very good terms judging by Exusiai's comment. With Rhodes Island now in the mix, the relationship between all three could be a very firm teamwork triangle that Ren would welcome very well.

"Very fun, huh? In that case, who's your favorite person over on Midsummers? I'm curious."

Exusiai rubbed her nose sheepishly. "If we're talking favorites, then it's gotta be Mr. Zenkichi. He gives us a serious dose of Team Dad and chill cop vibes, especially since he's an ex-cop! Really easy to hang around with, and his reactions are hilarious! Sure, he gets irritated by whatever trouble we stir up, but he doesn't get mad all that much! He's definitely way better to hang around with than Texas, but don't tell her I said that, okay?"

Zenkichi definitely gave off Team Dad vibes, which is something he felt so hard since he's the oldest member of the Phantom Thieves, and a literal father to boot. The easygoing nature and exaggerated reactions also fit him. He's not surprised that Exusiai got along with the Wolf. Maybe he should ask Zenkichi about this when he has the chance.

"Hey! Speaking of Texas, here she comes!"

Exusiai pointed to the distance on his left. As Ren turned his head, an armored vehicle can be seen heading to their direction, coming to a halt in front of them. A logo similar to the one on Exusiai sleeve collar is imprinted on the passenger doors. A front window opened to reveal a dark haired Lupo with... a Pocky stick in her mouth? The way she handled it definitely felt like she was holding a cigarette though. The cheery angel on his side called out to the Lupo with a smile.

"Texas! How's the delivery?!"

Texas on the other hand replied cooly. "Went about as well as always. The boss wanted me for transport, Exusiai?"

"Mhm! Transporting at least 4 people! And this guy right here is one of our VIPs! Say hello to Dr. Ren, one of our newest Rhodes Island associates!"

With how he was presented as if he was the grand prize of a game show, the Doctor had to introduce himself. "Alright then. Name's Ren. HRD Director and main commander of Rhodes Island. Good to meet you."

"Code name Texas, and likewise. In any case, Doctor. You too, Exusiai."

Both the human and angel proceeded to enter the armored vehicle through the front door, and Ren made himself snug in the center of it. The interior of it definitely gave vibes of a military vehicle. For all intents and purposes, this is an APC, and he's not going to ask how Emperor got his hands on one.

"So, where are we going?"

"The Slums. We probably have to go on foot once we arrive and I wanna get there as soon as possible."

"You heard the man, Texas! Gas it!"

The Lupo only nodded before stepping on pedal, putting the engine on gas as they drove away to the slums. For an APC, it can go fast, but so far, the entire trip just felt uneventful. Ren decided to make himself comfortable in the meantime, slumping in his position as the radio played a cheery pop song. The vibe of the song is something he can appreciate, and the vocals really drive the tone. In fact, he felt as if whoever sang the song was familiar somewhat...

"Hold up. Is Sora the one singing on the radio here?"

"Oh?" Exusiai looked at Ren in amazement as he pointed to the radio. "Wow! Good ears, Doctor! Yup, that's our one and only Sora singing our heart out! Isn't she swell?"

"Uh-huh. I can definitely appreciate how well she's singing. Who set the CD for this anyway?"

"That would be me." Ren jerked his head towards Texas, who is keeping her eyes on the road on the wheel. "Usually when I drive, I usually play Sora's songs. Emperor compiled all of them into CDs for us."

"CDs, huh? Wonder if I can be spared with a copy."

"Oh, I'm sure you're gonna get a free copy, Doctor. Especially you're gonna help Sora rise to stardom with this new band of yours! Too bad I can't hear you jamming earlier."

"Dr. Ren can play an instrument?"

Ren nodded as he pulled his smartphone out. "The guitar, to be precise. In fact, think I'll give you an example of what I was gonna play. Do any of you guys have an...oh shoot."

Both girls looked confused at what he was trying to do. Exusiai however quickly got an idea. "You wanna play something on the radio, Doctor? Our radio only works with CDs and DVDs, but we can turn it off if you want! I wanna hear something from your playlist!"

"Honestly, I'm interested as well. Let's hear it, Doctor."

With the green light sounded, Ren quietly shuffled through his extensive playlist for a track to play. He has to make sure to go for instrumentals to not cause any unnecessary questions. Luckily enough, his Instrumentals playlist is large as well. Not as large as the one with vocals, but it's something he can appreciate.

In the end, he went with another certified Lyn classic, "Daredevil". Blasting the volume on 50%, the Doctor hit the play button, and the sounds of energetic guitar riffs soon wafted into everyone's ears. Exusiai was already jamming, and Texas was faintly smiling.

"Oooh! Now this is my kind of jam! You can play something like this, Dr. Ren?! I'm getting all pumped to see you in action now!"

"Mind if I come by too? I wanna see you play guitar if Exusiai says you can."

Seeing as how both Penguin girls are showing their enthusiasms in their own ways, the only boy in the group would hate to disappoint. "Well, when there's time, I'll make sure to invite you lot to my next jamming session. You have my word."

"It's a promise, Doctor!"

The journey to the slums afterward was spent in pure harmony as high powered rock music continued to ring in the APC like a personal concert being held at front seat. Ren really has to make sure that he gets to jam once more this time, now that he has more expectations placed on him. Now that he thought about it, it's going to be the end of the year in a few days. Maybe he can convince Amiya and Kal'tsit to host a New Year's party for everyone on Rhodes Island? Convincing Amiya will be easy, but Kal'tsit will be a harder challenge to tackle, most likely.

A few minutes later passed, and Texas brought the vehicle to a halt as they stopped near a small road leading to rows of dilapidated buildings. All passengers and driver got off from the APC as Ren took point, the group facing the road before them.

"So, this road leads to the slums. It certainly looks like it."

Exusiai nodded in response. "Uh-huh. This is where all the Infected of Lungmen get tossed into. They managed to build their own community here, and based on what Mr. Zenkichi told me and personal experience of our company, they don't trust us Uninfected folk much."

"In any case, where are the other 3 VIPs? Have any intel to share, Doctor?"

"I should be able to contact them since I got called beforehand. Hold up."

Ren quickly brought up his smartphone and dialed Kevin's number. After a few dial sounds, a voice can be heard on the other side.

"Doc? You're at the slums already?"

"Right by the entryway. Where are you guys?"

"Right now, we're... W wants to speak with you again."

Ren can only sigh as he heard sounds on the other side. Refusing to waste time, he took the initiative. "W, where are you guys now?"

A snicker can be heard on the other side. "So hasty, Doctor. Wouldn't it hurt to be patient for a bit~?"

"You know very well why we can't afford to waste time."

"Hah... Fine, fine. We're currently hanging out in Kevin's little hidey hole. Honestly, I really have no idea how he can be comfortable here."

"Well, where did you expect he'd stay? Anyway, give the phone back to Kevin, please."

"Okaaay. But only because you said please, my dear Doctor~"

Both Penguin girls looked at Ren in confusion over what the hell is happening on the other side of the call, something that Ren paid no heed as the call shifted back to Kevin.

"Thanks for that, Doc. What should I do now?"

"Okay, so first of all, where's your hideout?"

"It's some wrecked building that's filled with rubble inside near the marketplace."

Ren nodded at the directions. "Alright. I want you to stay put at your hideout, Kevin. Make sure W doesn't try anything funny before we arrive, got it?"

"Got it. Helps that I have an extra pair of hands and a lot of time to spend."

"Right. I'll call you again when we're at the market. I'll see you later then."

A hum can be heard before the call ended. As he shoved his smartphone in his pants pocket, he looked at both girls, with different degrees of confusion visible on the two. The more confused of the two, Exusiai, decided to speak up.

"Sooo... Where are we going now, Doctor?"

"The slum market. I'm a total stranger around these parts, so this is where you girls come in. Mind showing me the way?"

Texas replied to the question, slipping a new Pocky stick in her mouth in the meantime. "In that case, you go on with Exusiai. I'll stand guard here and keep our vehicle safe."

There was something oddly unfair about Texas' arrangement when it flew to him, hence the Doctor turned to the angel, who caught on to what he's thinking. "Don't worry! Nobody will mess with our ride while Texas is around. Plus, I know the slums like the back of my hand! No worries here!"

Ren nodded to Exusiai's words in trust. "Then I'll leave you on guard duty then, Texas. Let's go, Exusiai."

"Alright! Follow me, Doctor!"

Exusiai ran ahead into the slums, and Ren chased after her with eased breaths to not expend too much energy. With how the situation is now playing for both sides, he needs to reach Kevin's party before Reunion gets too suspicious of W and the deserter's disappearance. With any luck, considering the mercenary's relations with Reunion, they won't care much about her disappearance. The same can't be said for the deserter though, and such is why he didn't try to stop Exusiai's current pace, especially when they slipped in many narrow paths and alleyways that warranted great flexibility of one's body.

For one, he's happy he built his stamina early on through exercise back at Rhodes, but to him, his body is not yet back in its prime. Not to mention the strenuous "exercise" with all the sudden turns and such. By the time Exusiai stopped at their presumed destination and he caught up, he was panting heavily, knees weak and palms sweaty. The cheery angel quickly noticed the Doctor's current state and immediately rushed over.

"Doc! You doing alright? Did I go too fast back there?"

"Hah...hah... I'm fine! Just need to catch a breather."

Exusiai quickly shuffled around her carried satchel, taking out a cold bottle. "Uhh... Here! Good thing I reloaded on the cold drinks back at the studio!"

Ren hastily received the freshly refilled cold water bottle, rising up before chugging down on it fiercely like a man who ran a marathon. A sigh of contentment can be heard as Ren closed the bottle before tossing it back to Exusiai, feeling all refreshed. Taking a look at his surroundings, he can see many stalls offering wares, along with daily necessities like eggs and meat that they got from who knows where.

Safe to say, they arrived at the slums marketplace.

"Well...At least we arrived. Didn't expect to go to turn a lot of corners though."

"Heheh! What did I tell you, Doctor? I know the way around the slums like the back of my hand! I told you!"

Seeing the angel puff her chest out in pride made Ren chuckle at the sight. Pleasantries aside though, now that they've arrived at their destination. All they have to do now is figure out where Kevin's hideout is, in which direction.

But first...a phone call, and a bewildered tone soon graced his ears..

"At the market already, Doc? It's literally 2 minutes since the last call!"

"Took a lot of shortcuts. Had to chase after my entourage as well in the process of getting here."

"Who even is your... Fuck it. Who're you with? I'll send Morgana over to fetch you guys."

Ren glanced at Exusiai, who was busy browsing whatever knick-knacks are available at a nearby stall. "I'm with a redhead girl wearing a white zipped jacket. Have a halo on her head."

"Sankta, huh? Dunno how you managed to nab one as an entourage, but I'll take it. Don't go anywhere, okay, Doc?"

"Got it. See you."

The call ended there as Ren walked over to Exusiai, shoving his phone in his pocket. As he reached the stall she purviewed, he got a closer look at what she was looking at. Many keychains littered the table of various designs. Exusiai in particular was looking at keychains fashioned over firearms. The stall keeper, a gruff and buff elderly Forte man, looked at her in amusement. The Doctor himself can't help but be enamored over how intricate the designs are.

"You made this all by hand, my good man?"

The stall keeper chuckled at the question. "Damn straight, sir. All these babies right here are mine pride and joy, all the way from the block. Lookin' to buy your girlfriend here a chain for the road?"

The simple mention of girlfriend made Exusiai laugh, albeit with slight pink tinting her cheeks. "Sir, we only just met today! We'd be making a world record!"

"Hah! You got some spunk, I'll give ya that. Still, rare to see folks from the city cruising around these parts though. What's your business in the slums, you two?"

Ren replied while looking over a keychain shaped like a blade. "We're here to meet some friends of ours. He's actually a refugee."

The stall keeper's expression grew dour. "From Chernobog, eh? I heard what happened over on the news. Whole city turned into wreck because of them white coat bastards."

As someone who was a direct witness of the whole thing, Ren can only sigh and nod. The gruff keeper continued on. "Doesn't help that the whole refugee transport process was quite messy. Everytime I see them cops march them down over down the streets, they look like utter shit."

"Um, call it my curiosity, but mind telling us where the L.G.D sent them refugees?"

The keeper replied to a direction with his finger. "West of here, Sankta missy. That's where they marched off the refugees. They set up their own settlement after a while, but some have splintered off on their own at times. We're more than happy to welcome a few stragglers here though. We're all our own one happy community."

Ren looked off at the direction that the keeper pointed. He can't help but wonder about the refugee settlement in question. If time permitted him, he'd love to pay a visit himself, but alas...

Perhaps it's best to report this to Zenkichi when he has the chance. He'll know what to do.

"Thanks for the tip, my good man. In that case, how much LMD for 2 keychains?"

A grin quickly graced the Forte's face. "So you were looking for business after all, eh? Normally it's 300 LMD a piece, but since you lot have been real nice compared to them scaredy-cats, I'll charge you two 500 for both. What do you say?"

There was something odd in how the stall keeper phrased his offer, but Ren decided to save the ponndering for later"Exusiai, any keychain suit your fancy?"

The cheery angel held up a keychain for Ren to see, eyes twinkling. On closer inspection, the firearm adorning the chain is a... Mac '45? "This one right here! I already have my own gun, but I want 8 new guns! If I can't have real versions, then having a keychain of one will do, one at a time!"

Ren isn't going to question her fascination and wishes for guns. He's guilty of that too to some extent back on Earth because of Iwai, and it hasn't died down even here. Nodding to the cheery angel, he grabbed the tanto knife keychain and grabbed his wallet from his pants pocket, pulling out 500 LMD to hand over.

"A tanto knife and Mac' 45, sir."

The Forte keeper received the money with a smile. "Pleasure doing business with you, boy."

"Likewise. Have a good day, my good man." Tapping Exusiai's shoulder, Ren guided her away to the deeper parts of the market.

"Don't be a stranger now, ya hear?!"

His only reply to the Forte man was raising his hand and giving him a thumbs up.

- Times New Roman -

"Doctor, you're a real generous guy, and I thought I was generous! This is twice you bought me something! Well, technically the finballs were for Croissant, but I also had some! Does that count?"

"Nope. That doesn't count on the times I bought you things, but for you girls in general, that counts."

"So that makes only one for me, huh? Does listening to me ramble about the guns I want count?"

Ren let out a laugh as they continued their walk around their market, casting glances at the stalls and whatever they're selling. Truth be told, nothing really suited their fancy so far, other than the keychains, and he preferred not to spend anything more than necessary. Judging by the time of day, the market should still be going strong, at least based on former experience.

During the whole stroll, Exusiai was swinging the keychain with a spring in her step, looking especially happy. One question soon came about how Ren managed to figure out the exact submachine gun on the keychain he bought for her when he fancied pistols. When she learned of how well-learned he was of firearms in general. She proceeded to go into a long talk over the many kinds of firearms she wanted one day, ranging from the UMP9 to the M4 Carbine. All she had on her for now is a Kriss Vector that apparently can fire up to 5 bullets in burst fire. He didn't remember if Kriss Vector SMGs can actually do that, but it's definitely something he has to see for himself, if possible.

"Well, that's far less generous and more attentive and patient. Still doesn't count."

Exusiai pouted in response, briefly as she smiled back. "Generous or not, You're really shaping up to be a boss I can definitely work under, Doctor! Anyhoo, we've been out walking around for a while. Is that someone your VIP sent going to come fetch us?"

"I'm sure. He tends to be distracted by seafood though. Especially the high quality ones."

"High quality seafood? Is he a Feline or something?"

"A Feline, yes. He's... Ah."

Ren was about to continue until he saw a black cat walking up to them, a yellow collar worn on its neck. Its blue eyes stared intently at them before a mewl escaped its mouth, and he crouched down, scratching its chin. Exusiai can't help but crouch down with him, slowly gushing over how cute this cat is.

"Awwww, what a cute feline~! I didn't know you had a thing for them, Doctor!"

"Heh, I have a thing for felines because I know this one. Exusiai, meet Morgana."

The black cat raised his paw for Exusiai to hold, and they shook, adding to the angel's gushes... "Such a smart cat you are... What's a cat like you doing here~?"

"He's gonna be taking us back to my agents."

Ren's reply apparently surprised the redhead angel. "Wait, what? I didn't know Rhodes Island employs animals, Dr. Ren! You're not mistreating this poor soul, are you?!"

"Relax. Morgana here is a very special cat. Real smart, and real strong too. He trusts me a lot, and I hope you can trust him too."

Exusiai stared at Morgana who tilted his head curiously, paw still in her hand. Well, Ren advocated for his power and intelligence, and doubting her new partner isn't her style. "Okaaay. I'll be trusting you then, Morgana. Don't go on and mislead us, okay?"

A nod and a mewl were the cat's only replies before the angel let go of his paw. Morgana briskly turned around, and walked away as the duo rose up.

"Let's follow him."

"Alright!"

Ren and Exusiai proceeded to trail behind Morgana, leaving the market behind them. Following the cat led them to a district filled with buildings that seemed more dilapidated than the rest. The one certainty is that based on their talk with the Forte stall keeper, they're going eastward, which is the opposite direction to the refugee settlement.

A minute passed as they weaved through the narrow paths, before they stopped before a building with a large opening, as if a wrecking ball busted through the front door. The duo marched into the blasted entryway, only to be greeted by the sight of 3 people sitting on rubble. Kevin and W were easily noticeable, the latter having a gray duffel bag on her hand, but the 3rd person is a new face to the frizzy haired man. Stark blue hair with a curved tair of a similar color and gray skin, all dressed in an oversized shirt and baggy pants.

"You certainly took your time, Doctor. I thought Kevin said that you had some real important deals to make, and here I see you looking as if you're fresh on a date. How slick of you~"

Ren can't resist the urge to pinch to bridge of his nose. Ignoring the gobsmacked Exusiai, Ren replied in annoyance. "Please, we both know I'll end up getting lynched for dating on the job. Especially on officially work." He then shifted his attention to Kevin. "Kevin. You had no problems during your scoping, no?"

Kevin simply scratched the back of his head. "Not until I bumped into W, that's certain. Makes me remember how much of a pain in the ass she is."

"Believe me, I know. I'm guessing that the guy over there is the deserter W mentioned?"

The man in question stopped playing with his yo-yo, looking at Ren with a casual grin. "Yep, yep. You must be Kevin's new boss, right? Name's Ethan, and thanks a lot for keepin' an eye on my best bud here."

Hearing the mention of Ethan being Kevin's friend made Ren smirk. "You're a friend of Kevin? A friend of a friend of mine is also a friend, and I say welcome aboard. Still, whether you make it or no depends on your upcoming interview, and sadly I'm not in charge of it."

"Hold up, Doctor. Aren't you Rhodes' HR Director? I'm pretty sure that whether someone makes it or not depends on you, no?"

"Exusiai, I approve whether or not the Operators get into Combat or Logistics, not whether they become an Operator in the first place. Let's just say the person you get for the interview is a toss-up."

The angel scratched her chin, most likely curious as to how her own interview will go. She knows that Amiya is the de facto leader of Rhodes Island, and chances are, she'll end up being interviewed by the adorable rabbit. It'll be a breeze!

Ah, how blissful ignorance can be, and seeing Exusiai's cheerful expression afterward made him wince, especially knowing that Kal'tsit and Dobermann are also involved...

"Sooo... Mind telling us who your angel friend is? I'm honestly quite curious as to how you netted a Sankta in the first place, Doctor~"

Ren expected Exusiai to step up and do her usual introductions, yet she seemed rather hesitant. Even her expression felt withdrawn. He ended up mentally kicking himself for not realizing it sooner. Angels and devils are always going to be at odds regardless of world. In the end, he decidedly took over the introductions.

"W, Exusiai here is an affiliate from one of our partner companies. As long as we're going together, I don't want you to pester her too much. I know well enough to know what'll happen once a Sankta and Sarkaz enter bickering range."

"Aww. I just want to get to know my fellow firearm enthusiast, is all. Why stop me?"

"I'm just going to preemptively call bullshit on that. Exusiai, how well can Sarkaz wield firearms?"

Exusiai answered with a tone of distrust, eyeing the rifle slung on W's back. "The Sarkaz got nothing on us Sankta when it comes for firearms. In fact, I remember that there was history of Sarkaz looting Laterano caravans for our own guns. She probably can't shoot a gun at all!" The answer elicited a confident grin on Ren's face.

"See? Bullshit."

W raised her hands with a smile and a sigh. "Fine, fine. I yield to the verdict, judge. Anyway, now that we have the gang back together, can we get out of here? This place is really getting stuffier by the minute."

Ren glanced over at Kevin. Seeing him nod was the sign he needed. "Okay then. Kevin, pack up your things. All of us are leaving, Ethan, you're coming with us."

"Sure thing, Doctor. With me around, I'll make sure Kevin here won't go out of line."

"Ah, please. And you forget the times I saved your ass those times."

The show of pleasantries from the Savra and Ursus are definitely invigorating for the mentality. Everyone headed out of the slums without so much as a word, with Ren, Exusiai, and Morgana taking point. Ethan and Kevin remained in the middle, while W trailed behind them with a smile on her face.

Though it was unspoken, everyone can agree that W felt like an outsider who tagged along for the ride in varying degrees. Exusiai, being a Sankta was naturally very wary towards the Sarkaz mercenary, so much so that she whispered her concerns to the Doctor.

"Uhh...Doctor? Is there a reason why she's tagging with us? Who even is she anyway? You seem real familiar with her."

Ren whispered back in a similar hushed tone. "She's a Sarkaz mercenary currently working for Reunion. Through some twisted conflict, one way or another, we ended up becoming associates to one another."

"She's a Reunion? I get that... Ethan was it? Anyway, I get that Ethan wants to join you guys, and he seems real chill in my book, but what about this W girl? You sure we can trust her?"

Ren silently peered to his behind, only to find the demon girl fiddling with a smartphone down back before looking back at his angelic associate.

"Honestly? I don't blame you if you don't trust her. She can real be tricky to deal with in many ways. But you can trust me in reigning her in. She's the one who brought Ethan to us, and I for one have personal business with her."

Hearing Ren's word of assurance may not be much, but it was enough for her to relax a bit. "Okay. I'm with you in this, Doctor. I'm not really fine with her around, but if you say so."

Ren nodded back to Exusiai, relieved that she was able to let her guard down somewhat for now. Again, she has every right to be wary of W based on his own experience, but it's more preferable if everyone kept an amicable around each other. After all, she's been minding her business so far during the walk back, so all is good.

Speaking of the trip, the current size of their group means that going through the shortcuts that they took last time is out of the question, and that meant taking the longer route through the main street. The others in the back didn't seem to mind, however. Kevin and Ethan are busy chatting about whatever, W is still fiddling with her smartphone. Exusiai and Morgana are both walking to their own beat, and Ren couldn't be more content.

"Doctor? Can I carry Morgana until we get back to Texas, please?"

The random question from the angel next to him made Ren chuckle softly. "You have to ask Morgana for that. Then again, I'm sure he heard you. Morgana, what do you say?"

The duo looked at the cat in question, with him looking back at Exusiai. The nod she received made her smile brightly as she promptly cradled him up in the most comfortable fashion. Morgana let out a purr, clearly enjoying her treatment as he closed his eyes and rested on the angel's arms.

"For the record, if I end up being a Rhodes Island Operator, I get to see Morgana a lot more often, right?"

"Yep, and he mostly hangs out with me, though sometimes he'll wander off on his own or go to his own group. Call it his own form of independence."

"Independence, huh?" Exusiai looked at Morgana, and a thought crossed her mind. "Say, Doctor, how did you and Morgana meet? Is he also an Operator?"

Ren let out a hum. "Well, yes. He's also an Operator. How he became an Operator is something you have to see for yourself. As for where I met him... I'm not even sure if I should be the one saying it. You'll have to hear it from Morgana himself."

"Aww... why? I get if the backstory between you two is something personal, but you can't tell me that how he became an Operator is also undisclosed, right? I mean, a smart feline like him working for you guys is definitely something!"

"Sorry to say, Exusiai, but it's also undisclosed. If you wanna hear about how we met and became an Operator, it's best that you hear it from him. I'll just say that Morgana has a lot of surprises under his collar."

The redhead angel ended up pouting from the entire exchange. Ren himself had a reason for not telling the hows and whys regarding Morgana. He was unsure about showing off Morgana like that when W is in practical earshot. Plus, he figured it was better if Morgana spilled the beans on this whole case.

He can already imagine her gasps of surprise from the series of revelations, and he's already smirking at the thought. The trip back is definitely going to be far less boring by thinking of Exusiai's hypothetical reactions.

"Doctor? Why are you smirking? You think this is all funny, huh?"

"No, no, Exusiai. It's nothing. It's nothing..."

- Take Your Time -

The sight of the Penguin Logistics APC parked all safe and sound right where it was relieved Ren somewhat, yet there's no sign of Texas anywhere. The group of six managed to get out of the slums without much trouble, and their ride has no signs of any victim of a scuffle.

The only question is, where's the driver?

"Exusiai? Where's Texas?"

"Well, knowing Texas, she probably decided to hole herself up in there. Why don't you go check it out?"

"How about you do it instead? I gotta run something with Kevin and the others."

"You got it, Doctor!"

Exusiai, and Morgana, who has been on her arms the whole trip, went over to the APC to find Texas. In the meantime, Ren turned around to address the rest of the entourage. Kevin and Ethan stopped their conversation the moment they halted their steps, and W stashed her smartphone away.

"Finally. I was honestly getting bored."

"Sure, you are, W. Sure you are. How about you guys?"

Ethan was the one to speak. "We're doing all good, boss. Gotta say, treatment over on Rhodes Island certainly feels real good. Heard from Kevin that you're upgrading his jetpack. Kevin has always been tech-savvy, but everyone can agree back in the crew that his jetpack sucks."

"Ah, shut up, Ethan." Such a proclamation earned an Ethan a fist on his head from Kevin. "At least I built it with my own two hands. And no way in hell I will let them fiddle with it unless I get involved!"

"Did you at least tell Closure that, Kevin?"

Ren's question silenced the Ursus, before dread ushered his features. "Oh fuck. For the record, I can trust her at least to not add any unnecessary crap to my pack, right?"

"You don't have to worry about it, Kevin. Closure will be busy with whatever I have in store for her. Plus, I'm pretty sure she's not in charge of weapons and equipment, anyway."

Kevin let out a relieved sigh, only to be followed by sounds of laughter. "Hahaha! You're so hung up over your jetpack, Kevin. Not like that pack of yours is your kid or anything~"

"W, I know a ton of people who will tear you apart for that statement if it involves their own work. I suggest that you shut up."

W simply shrugged with a carefree smile, making Ren sigh at her half-assed committal to not piss people off. Shortly after, Exusiai came running back to him, with a cheery smile on her face. Good news, most likely.

"Like I said, Texas holed herself up in the ride, Doctor! Though, I had to wake her up first. Can't believe she slept while still having a stick in her mouth..."

Ren was unsure on how Texas slept in such a state, but it made a sweat drop. "In any case, let's just hope she had a good sleep. Is she ready to drive?"

"Yep! Shall we get going to Rhodes Island, Doctor?"

A brief silence overcame Ren as he pondered his next move. As much as Ren wanted to head back to Rhodes and call this mission over with the information that Kevin had procured, there was one more loose end that he had to tie up. Especially when he can potentially milk that loose end for so much more information that can complement Kevin's own discoveries. He stared back towards W, and the mercenary smirked back at him.

It seems that his next choice of action is clear for the Joker.

"On the contrary, I have some loose ends to tie up. You and Texas go ahead and take Ethan and Kevin back to Rhodes, Exusiai."

"Huh? A loose end? What loose-" Exusiai stared back at W, who innocently waved back at her and left her perplexed."With W? What for?"

"Intel gathering. Call it a trade of information. She has something I want, and I have something she wants. This is a private trade, so I gotta go at this alone."

The angel let out a hum of thoughtfulness, eventually smiling back at the Doctor. "Okay, Doctor. You know how to handle her the best out of any of us, so I'll trust you! You can trust us to bring those two back safely too!"

"I'm counting on you, Exusiai."

With a nod of enthusiasm, the redhead angel ran back to the Penguin APC. The duo of friends clearly overheard their talk from behind, and Kevin spoke up as Ren approached them. "So you're gonna be going with W after this, Doc? You sure about this?"

"I'm sure. W may be a loose cannon, but she has her own integrity. Plus, she ain't stupid enough to blow me up in the middle of the city."

"Doctor, I'm pretty sure loose cannon is underselling how she can be."

Ethan solemnly patted Kevin's shoulder. "Relax, Kevin. W was the one who smuggled me all the way here. Doctor here is right on the money. She may be insane, but she isn't stupid. Besides, all you're doing is doing an info trade, right, Doc?"

"Yep. Once I'm done, I'll head back, no scratches on my person."

Kevin can only let out a huff, no doubt feeling resigned over Ren's resolve. "Alright then. Just be careful with that merc, alright?"

"Right. You go get in the APC. The Penguin girls are gonna take you back to Rhodes Island. You should probably start thinking about making your report soon."

A sigh escaped Kevin's lips as he marched towards the ride back to Rhodes, with the Ursus grumbling about the report and his Savra friend consoling and offering support. The sounds of engines revving up were heard shortly after the two of them entered the vehicle, and they soon drove off down the road, leaving Ren alone with the sole mercenary. Said mercenary had a smile filled with amusement, now that she's alone with the Doctor.

"Well, well, well. Now it's just us two, all alone together. Whatever shall we do, Doctor~?"

"Indeed, what shall we do? For starters, I assume you've done your own end of the work I gave you, W?"

The mercenary patted her duffel bag. "Hmhm. Managed to get a lot of dirt on Reunion's current plans. Though, are you really going to make me tell you in the middle of nowhere like this? How rude~"

As much as Ren wanted to reply to her remark with equal snark, discussing about Reunion's current affairs right in front of the entrance of the slums will not only feel uncomfortable for him, it will also look dumb in the eyes of others. Even when it comes to efficiencty, it requires a certain amount of class and comfort.

"You know what? You're right. You know any cafes around these parts? You definitely went out of the slums at least once."

W visibly smirked, as if looking triumphant. "Well, well, well~. Never thought theDoctor himself would ask me for help. Then again, he would never ask me for these kinds of questions, would he, Joker?"

Hearing that code name being used to address him made Ren furrow his eyebrows. He decided to see if Shadow had anything to say about it, yet all he heard was radio silence. He decided to ask someone else.

'Hey, Heeho. Is Shadow going to say anything about this?'

A jolly voice came to respond. 'Well... Hee did say something, ho. Something bout' how she "surprisingly still remembers my way of work". I wanna know more, but he creeps me out, ho!'

'Close enough. Appreciate it.'

The Jack Frost simply saluted before marching off into the dark reaches of his mind. By the time he got back, W was all up his face, smiling cutely.

"So? What did he say? I'm curious, Joker~"

With them being so close to each other, he decided to do the same thing he did last time and pulled on her cheeks. "He's amused over how you still remember how he works."

"How wonderful. Now, are we going to have ourselves a cafe chill day, or are you going to pinch my soft cheeks all day?"

"Cafe chills, thank you very much."

Ren let go of W, the latter slightly annoyed as she rubbed her cheeks. "Now then. I know a cafe a few blocks away from here. Has a spot where we talk deals without people snooping on us."

"Good enough. The Reunion guys won't find it suspicious that you're absent, right?"

"We'll be fine~ Skull Shatterer and his buddies practically give no fucks over where I go. They probably thought I'm off dumpster diving for explosive parts whenever I go out. Now let's go."

With nothing else to do in the slums, the unlikely duo began their walk towards their meeting spot, a myriad of emotions going about their minds. W simply swung her duffel bag around without a care, while Ren had his hands shoved into his pocket. In the eyes of others, seeing the two walking beside each other, people may assume the two to be casual pals. Some of the bolder ones might assume that the two are dating, when in reality, they are just business partners wanting to talk about past deals.

With that thought in mind, W probably wouldn't care less about what others would think about the two of them together, but how would she react once the thought comes to her own head? That's what Ren wants to know, at least to make a conversation.

"W, humor me for a bit here."

The mercenary glanced at Ren, smiling carefreely. "What? You're bored and you want to have a chat?"

"Pretty much the gist of it."

W scoffed at the simple truth. "Fine, fine. What is that you want to talk about, Joker~?"

Even though he was the one he dug this hole when it came to names, Ren felt that it'll take a while for him to get used to laying in it. "You ever thought that the people that sees us like this ever assume that we're like best buddies or something?"

"Hah? What brought this up?"

"Curiosity. Even though this will possibly blow the cat up."

W let out a hum as they continued their steps. "Well, if you're really that curious, let me ask you something. Do you remember what I said back then, when we're all alone together~?"

Misleading choice of words aside, Ren's reply was succinct. "Mercenaries like you don't care about what others think. I'm guessing Sarkaz mercenaries in general also act this way?"

W smirked at Ren, and he can tell that the smirk was one of amusement. "Quite a good guess you made, Joker. Us Sarkaz mercenaries only care for the work we have to do, and in the grand scheme of things, we don't care what others think. Hell, we don't even care if we have to kill our own buddies if they become our mark. All this, just so we can have food on our plate~"

Ren can only frown at the reality. He can honestly understand the Sarkaz mercenary code of conduct, considering that based on Shadow's words, Kazdel is hell on Earth where you have to do anything to live. Killing your own compatriots just for the sake of cash is not out of the realm of possibility.

"Well, good to know on that regard. What with Kazdel being literal hell on earth."

"Hell on earth? What, did the Doctor tell you that? As much as I hate him, he's actually right on that. Can't blame him if he ends up hating Kazdel too."

Still, on the current scheme of things, W answered his question through her thoughts of herself as a mercenary in general.

"As a matter of fact, he did. But that's beside the point. Especially since you didn't really answer my question properly."

"Really now? I already told you that I don't care what others think about me, right?"

What of her own thoughts as her own person, unchained by occupation?

"I'm asking that question to you as your own person, not as a mercenary in general."

Much to his own surprise, the Sarkaz woman walking next to him didn't answer outright and just went silent, having a ponderous look on his face. Perhaps because she's actually thinking on how to answer this question properly? Ren himself is curious over what is going on in W's head. Does such a question mean a lot to her?

'Hoy, Ren. You got a moment?'

Walter's voice emanated from the forefront of his mind, something that Ren found curious. 'Sure, Walter. What's up?'

'Well, did I ever tell you about the livelihood of Sarkaz mercenaries?'

'Sarkaz mercenaries? You've been listening on our conversation?'

'Most of it, but anyway, W here wasn't kidding when she said that the lives of us Sarkaz mercs are hell. But when it comes to their identities, the problem stems deeper.'

'Identities? What are you-'

Ren immediately circlejerked to the time he gave Walter, a simple Persona of an Imp, his own name as Walter. He remembered that he was especially ecstatic when he got his own name, which was honestly meant as a nickname for him. It honestly felt a bit odd that he would value a nickname that much as if he got his own...

Wait. Giving someone a name is much like giving someone the first step of their own identity. If so...

'...Does this relate to the time where I gave you Walter as a nickname?'

'Nailed it in one, buddy. When it comes to the identities of Sarkaz mercenaries, it's pretty much a horrible case because of the fact that in the industry, we normally don't have our own names to begin with.'

Ren's eyes widened as Walter told him of such a damning piece of information. 'Okay. As much as I want to call bullshit on what you said, this is pretty much the only plausible reason for your excitement back then. So, you're telling me that W here...'

'Yep, our miss silver demon here probably didn't have a name at the start. 100% sure we'll agree that her parents would be utter dumbasses if they actually named her after a LETTER.'

Hearing all this, Ren can't help but look at W with concern, especially when she originally didn't have her own identity in the first place. 'Still, I have to wonder. If W was nameless at the start, how did she get that name in the first place?'

'She probably looted the equipment of the last person that was named W. If you took the equipment of a dead mercenary, the identity of that dead mercenary is now yours. That's Sarkaz merc culture for ya, Ren.'

'...Sarkaz merc culture being brutal is an understatement.'

'You can say that again. Now it's time for me to bail. She's staring at us.'

Ren can feel Walter retreating to his own corner in his mind. When he turned to face W, she was staring at him with a smirk up close.

"Heeey. Terra to Joker. Fowlbeast caught your eye?"

"No. You were silent for a real long time. Odd coming from you."

"How rude. Even I have my hard thinking moments, you know~?" The mercenary retracted her head away from Ren's personal space, sporting a mock hurt expression.

"True, considering that you didn't immediately kill me last time. Anyway, you still have to answer my question."

W crossed her hands behind her head, her carefree smile back on her as she looked upward. "Well, if you want MY opinion so bad, then I'll just say it. I don't care what others think about us together."

"...So, it's practically the same answer."

"Duh. Hell, I don't care if people think we're dating or anything. After all, you're not the Doctor. Just some crazy slick bastard using his body, and I don't hate you at all, for now at least~"

Hearing W's honest opinion of him made Ren smile slightly. "Nice to know that I'm not on your kill list. Though, what if it's him walking right next to you and chatting with you right now?" He was soon met with the frown of his Sarkaz accomplice.

"...Is that supposed to be a joke, or are you trying to make me puke and lose my appetite? You have any idea how much I wanna kill that bastard? He's lucky that he doesn't remember what he did."

"If only I knew what made you hate him so much. What did he do even?"

"Oh, I'd be happy to tell you what he did. But then again, I can't have him listening in or you telling him what he has done, now can I~?"

"...Guess I'm not the only one who's slick."

W smiled triumphantly as she turned her head. Ren however, submerged in his thoughts once more.

Truth be told, Ren already had a few hints as to what made W hate Shadow so much. For one, it's heavily related to Shadow's past as a Warlord during the Kazdel Civil War. Second is that it has something to do with their supposed Queen back then. Third is that W seems to have held the Queen in very high regard, considering how she utterly disliked the idea of someone being a Demon Lord with no good reason.

The only conclusion he can gather is that Shadow must have done something to the supposed Queen. But what exactly would he do to warrant so much hate? Kill her? But he once served her before, and the dark Persona doesn't seem like the treacherous type.

'I see you arrived at a similar conclusion.'

Shadow's words rang within. How convenient for the man of the hour to show up. 'So, you're saying that the possibility of you doing something to your Queen is possible.'

'Yes. Though the information we have at the moment, while substantial, is still too little for us to come to a logical conclusion, much less this one. Even if I were to kill my Queen during the game, there would be no reason at all to commit such a grave sacrifice at that point.'

'You think we should ask W about this?'

Shadow shook his head. 'No. While the mercenary herself have no form of vitriol towards you, inquiring this in the early game will ruin the progress of your relationship. Best that we hold this theory to ourselves for the time being. Only when she trusts you more shall we bring this up.'

Ren only nodded in agreement to Shadow's advice, and he is very much correct. Nurturing bonds takes progress and time. Going at it too quickly will risk breaking that bond, and when it comes to W, inquiring about the Queen to her will cause unneeded complications for now.

With the moment of theorizing over, the duo continued their walk in silence. As they continued on, they passed a small entryway in green and gray decor, playing metal music from within. It is here where W stopped, and Ren as well.

"Here we are. My favorite place to chill when I want to get away from those zealous white coat dipshits."

Ren looked towards the dimly lit entryway and looked up. Lo and behold, there was a sign. "Hui Jia Underground. Somehow unsurprising that this place looks shady as hell."

"What, you're trying to say that I'm also shady? How rude, Joker. Then again, I won't deny your words~" Ren slightly deadpanned at the response.

"Thank you for at least being honest with yourself."

"You're welcome. Now, shall we go in~?"

With the mercenary leading the way, the duo went through the entryway, leading into dim set of stairs leading downward. What greeted them by the end is a metal doorway with a neon sign featuring the name of what he assumes to be a bar of sorts. In fact...

"So, what even is the Hui Jia Underground, anyway?"

"Just a bar and a diner thrown into one. I don't really care for their Barrens Tequila shill, but the snacks they got are decent enough."

At least Ren got the bar assumption correct. As they entered into the Underground, the Joker had to admit that he'd believe it if this place was made for war junkies. The walls are made from faded wood, with the ceiling and floors made of metal. Parts of metal fences were used as wall decor along with multitudes of weapons and posters of various insignias that he had no clue about, which is something he'll have to learn for later. A bar counter is placed in the middle with various bottles lining the shelves and a glass window behind it, giving sight to the kitchen within.

Standing behind the counter was a bulky Lung decked in a camo trousers and a shirt/leather jacket combo. A scar can be seen from his cheek as the two approached him. The barkeep looked at W with amusement.

"You're back earlier than I thought, W. What, you miss Muji's coral aquabeast already?"

W scoffed at the guess. "Please, Muji's cooking is good, but I'm not in the mood for fried stuff right now. I'm here on actual merc business, Zhong."

"That so?" The barkeep, Zhong turned to look at Ren with an disapproving stare. "And I suppose this kid here is your business partner? The hell are you doing roping someone like him into a shady place like this?"

W was about to make a comment on that, only for Ren to beat him to the punch. "Let's just say that I'm her ex-boss wanting to rekindle our business ventures. Simple trades of info, but I assure you that if the info leaks, things will get real ugly."

"Really now? Well, I'm not one to turn away a boy and a girl trying to get back together." Ren and W looked at Zhong apprehensively, yet he didn't care one bit. "Anyway, if you two are gonna do dangerous business, then go do it in the corner. No one's here right now, and you can trust me and Muji here to keep our lips shut."

"Heh... But I don't see Muji anywhere. I can't trust him if he's not say-"

"Hahahaha! You're actually doubting me, W-chan?!"

The kitchen window slid open to reveal the head of a middle aged Perro man with a manic smile on his face. The only notable features Ren managed to glean from him is his hair tied to a ponytail and a ragged eyepatch, along with how he presented his manic smile, almost like...

Ren shoved any further thoughts away from his head, lest his imagination conjures up situations that he sorely never wanted in real life in the event that the Perro man is proficient with knives outside of the kitchen. W, ignorant of her associate's inner turmoil, smirked at Muji's outcry.

"So there you are, Muji. I thought you were out somewhere pissing off someone unimportant."

"Ah, please. Everyone in the underground knows better than to piss me off. And they also know I keep my word! Anyone who dares snoop in knows what'll happen! With that said, you!"

Ren's eyes were wide as Muji pointed towards him. "The fu- me!?"

"Yes, you! What's your name, kid? You're definitely some regular jackass if you can just casually stroll in here with W-chan without so much as being forced, much less be her former boss!"

"...Ren. Just Ren."

"Really, now? No last names or whatever?" The silence that came afterward was a sign enough. "Well fine. I'll tell you something, Ren. Nutcases like W are one of a kind and considering that you seem all buddy-buddy with her for a random ass, you're okay in my book. Besides, if Zhong here approves of you, then I'm sure you're the good kind of troublemaker like us here."

"...Thanks, I guess? I'll admit I'm a troublemaker of my own right, but not on W's level here."

The look Ren got from the mercenary afterward is pretty much saying that she thinks that he's spitting bullshit, and Zhong can't help but laugh. "Seriously, you guys should go ahead and trade info already. We can't have you two just standing there even though business is slow."

"And since business is quiet, you two crazy asses can get my coral aquabeast, on the house. Sound good?"

Ren's expression brightened up. "Can't say no to free food. Thanks, man."

W in the meantime had her trademark smirk. "You sure about this, Muji? Bold of you to give us the most expensive snack for free~"

"Hah! It may be expensive, but it's fucking popular, you little Sarkaz. I have enough to last me for weeks! Now you two go and do your business. It'll be up in 9 minutes, you get it?"

Muji proceeded to shut his window to begin his work. With nothing else to talk about, the duo decided to take up their seats on a corner of the bar, a cushioned seat with a table at its center, perfect for relaxation. Once they made themselves comfortable, Ren spoke up first.

"Okay, now for business. You got some info you want to share?"

"Yes, yes. Here you go~" W opened up her bag and shuffled her hands inside, pulling out a large brown paper envelope which is given to Ren afterward. Once opened, he pulled out a series of papers that he laid out onto the table. On closer inspection, the papers look to be marked maps and infiltration plans for Lungmen.

Safe to say, the Doctor was genuinely surprised by what he is seeing, and the mercenary was enjoying the sight of his shocked expression.

"Okay. I did not expect you to get this much dirt."

"Hah, seeing you have that look on your face makes it all the more worth it. I never thought I'd also see the day where the Doctor gets this expressive~"

"Even though I'm not the Doctor at all?"

"I mean, you're using his body, and your expressions are also his now. Sure, it'd be more satisfying if he himself was shocked, but you'll make do~"

Ren can only sigh in disbelief. "Fair enough. Anyway, how'd you get a hold of these plans anyway? These can't be the original."

W twirled her hair as she spoke. "Nothing like a little picture taking and copying can't do. It's always good to have underlings under you, you know? Though I'll admit, I had to write up the plans myself since I hate drawing intricate stuff."

"Your handwriting, huh?"

Ren decided to look over the infiltration plans once more, particularly in how it was written. For someone who's probably spent their lives killing to survive, her handwriting is actually not that bad. Sure, her handwriting may be a bit rough around the edges, but he was able to read it without much difficulty, and he can respect that.

W however, noticing that Ren is looking at the plans for an entirely different reason, is less than impressed. "Hey, are the plans really that big of a deal, or are you just trying to see if my handwriting is pretty?"

"Well, it's definitely more than passable, I'll say that much."

"...Is that supposed to be a joke, or are you just being sarcastic with me?"

Ren shook his head twice. "Nope and nope. If I was a mercenary myself, pretty sure I won't care about my handwriting as well, long as everyone else can read it."

Such a response left W in silence, unsure of how to react. It was a reminder however, that the Joker was a real smooth talker to contrast his snark. Well, perhaps too smooth. "Well, whatever. You can keep the copies to yourself for whatever you want. Now, I think it's time you uphold your end of the bargain~"

"...Of course." After putting the plans and maps back into the envelope, Ren adopted a wary expression. "Alright, what do you want to know about my powers?"

W's smirk crept back up into her face. "Heeh... Why be so tense? You know you can trust me on this. After all, I'm the only one who knows who you really are~"

"Maybe so. But I gotta be extra considering what happened over the past few days. A lot of things happened over the course, and now the heads of Rhodes know about my powers now."

"Really now~? So even the old hag knows about it too?"

Ren lifted an eyebrow in confusion. "Old hag? Who are you even talking about?"

"Oh, you know. Mainly dresses in green, silverish white hair, pair of feline ears. Surely you know someone that fits the description, Joker. I'm sure the good Doctor knows too~"

There was one person that fits the description, and the Joker's expression soon dimmed. "It's Kal'tsit, isn't it?"

W's smirk grew wider. "There we go. Well, as much as I want to ask what your opinion is on her, why don't we stop derailing ourselves further and get to the main meat of the matter~?"

"Okay, okay. But first, I gotta ask if our food's done yet. I'm actually getting hungry and it's... hold up."

Ren took out his smartphone and turned it on just to look at the time. W in the meantime had an amused expression. "So, you actually got yourself a smartphone? For someone who came out of nowhere, you're certainly keeping up with recent tech~"

"The truly evolved man moves with the times, as they say. And speaking of time, I can't believe it's nearing 10:30 already. Where's the-"

"Hahahah! Your bellies are already rumbling with anxiety, eh?!"

Turning their heads, the sight of Muji decked in an apron with a tray on his hands. On top of it, was a picture perfect plate of coral fish that graced the eyes of the ragtag duo of former associates turned acquaintances, along with the sweet smell of the sauce that coated the crispy fish. As if on call, both of their stomachs let out a growl, and the eyepatched man grinned wider in response. Of course, one can't forget the cold mugs of water as beverage.

"So, I was right! One coral aquabeast, from yours truly."

With the plate placed on the table, Ren stared at the fried delicacy before him. He had never eaten coral fish his entire life and being able to taste such a widely acclaimed dish capable of stirring the hearts of any connoiseur of Chinese food made him equal parts anxious and excited.

It didn't help that both W and Muji are staring at him expectantly, as if waiting for his review. That only added onto the pressure.

"Come on, Joker. Eat it. Or are you too much of a coward?"

"Bullshit! No way in hell does a guy like this be scared to eat my signature! Eat one piece, kid!"

"Okay, okay! I'll eat it!"

Succumbing to literal peer pressure, Ren snapped a part of the coral fish out, which was entirely glazed with red sweet and sour sauce. Ren slid the fish into his mouth and...

"...Holy shit."

The amount of flavor that assaulted his senses was enough to make him hum internally in delight. The crispiness of the fish and the flavor of umami, boosted by just the right amount of kick from the sweet and sour sauce with each chew almost knocked his socks off. Even as he swallowed, the flavor still lingered.

"Holy shit? What do you mean "holy shit"?! Better be a good one."

"...Hah. Muji, I'm almost tempted to try and make this myself after eating this."

W instantly cracked after hearing the response. "You? Cook?! Now I know you gotta be joking!"

"Hah! You sure about this, kid? You have any idea how much trouble it makes creatin' a masterpiece like this?"

"If I can survive serving a ton of people during breakfast rush hour, then I'm pretty sure I can nail making a coral aquabeast."

W only laughed harder in response, yet Muji had an amused gaze. "That so, eh? Well, if you're gonna say all that, just know that if you fuck this dish up and I hear of it, I'm going to to keep hounding you until you get it right. Got it?"

"Crystal clear."

"Now that's what I'd like to hear! Time for me to get back into business!"

Muji proceeded to stroll away with a good mood on his shoulders. Ren in the meantime took another piece of the fish while mentally sighing to himself. If Muji drew any parallels to exactly who he thought he was, he's going to hound him literally everywhere in Lungmen like a crazy yandere stalking her lover, to the point of hiding in sewer grates and giant traffic cones.

"...He is definitely something."

W snacked on the fish, speaking with muffled voices. "You mean Muji? He definitely has a few screws loose. Was once part of one of Higashi's notorious yakuza clans." The information made Ren's brain deflate due to the confirmed parallel. "Anyway, time for you to spill the beans, Joker. What's your power all about?"

"Right. Think I should begin from the start."

Taking a swig of cold water and sighing afterward, Ren began his explanations.

"First of all, the name of the Arts I have is Persona. It's a kind of Arts that is rooted to one's own soul. Meaning, it's entirely different from the Originium Arts you know, love, and hate."

"Entirely different from regular Arts, huh? Let me guess. Not just anyone can have this power of Persona?"

"Yup. Awakening these Personas needs you to fulfill certain conditions. They're not that easy to do though, which is what makes it hard to find Persona users, much less awaken your own."

W let out a sigh of disinterest. "Figured, considering that you said your power comes from our own souls. It's already hard enough for someone to learn those Originium Arts already. Let me guess, these Personas also make Oripathy worse if you use it too much?"

"What do you think?"

A twinge of annoyance graced her features. "Hnn... I'm guessing, no?"

"Yep. The answer is no. Personas don't affect users with Oripathy at all." Ren can see W's eyes gaining a glint of interest.

"Hoh... Honestly I doubted that your Arts won't do jack shit for Oripathy users. Looks to me, we have ourselves a game-changer~"

"A game-changer that improves over time, yes. That's one thing Personas have in common with Originium Arts." Ren swiped a piece of the coral aquabeast before continuing. "Difference is while Originium Arts is improved through constant study and practice, Personas improve through your own experiences, since the power is closely linked to our inner selves. As we continue to improve ourselves in combat, our Personas gain power from the experience too."

Ren thought he gave a good explanation on that regard, but he didn't expect the Sarkaz to laugh. "Hahahaha! So you're saying that Personas basically adopt an EXP system? What is this, a videogame? Get real!"

The irony of W's words was not lost on Ren, considering the world of Terra is literally based on a game itself. That didn't stop him from massaging his forehead and sighing, however. "If you're going to put it that way, then unfortunately, yes."

His response only made his mercenary associate laugh even harder, most likely because of the absurdity of how Personas improve when put in such a fashion. Again, he found her response utterly ironic. If only she knew...

"Aaaah... I don't think I've ever laughed this hard before~. And to think, this was all because of some fact. How funny!"

"Ha ha. Do you have any other questions?"

W soon adopted a knowing smirk. "Say, let's divert the topic slightly. Does Kal'tsit know about these Personas already? Knowing the old hag, I'm sure she'd be grilling you for info at any moment."

Ren only frowned in the face of that question. "Well, considering that my stunts have been fully recorded by who knows what, I'm pretty sure she knows that this Arts exist by default. But for details, no."

"Hmm. You lucky bastard. I'm sure you met her at one point. Far as I know, she hates the Doctor's guts."

"Believe me, he has made it clear that the feeling is mutual." The reply made W smirk wider.

"Well, well~. In that case, I'm sure he's already told you that Kal'tsit can't be trusted easily, and that is honestly the one thing I agree with him. That lynx really knows how to get under someone's skin real easily, and I'd really hate for you to break down under her questioning." She narrowed her eyes at the Joker. "After all, that wouldn't be fitting for someone who gave me that speech on how a Demon Lord should be, wouldn't it?"

In contrast to W's narrowed stare, Ren stared back calmly. "The Doctor already told me what Kal will do whenever she asks, W. Besides, you know I have my way with words, and I'm not the type to give up that easily. What kind of lord would I be to yield after one interrogation?"

Ren's reply made W cover her head and shake it, yet he can see a smile under there as she sighed. "Look at me, to think I actually bothered to care about someone who doesn't need to be worried for, in the body of someone I hate. I must be going crazy."

"You say that when you keep grenades hidden under your skirt."

"...Hoooh~. I didn't think you're the kind of person to be a skirt chaser, Joker~"

In retropsect, Ren should have anticipated that when he stated his reasoning. "Urgh. You know what? I'm almost tempted to just ditch the boat right now and leave."

"Really~? But we still have a lot of fish to go through, you know?"

Ren turned towards the coral aquabeast, which was halfway finished. He almost wanted to groan at how his food connoiseur self refuses to leave this unfinished, and instead just sighed. Maybe he can fish out for more info from W, beyond simple plans and routes.

Plucking off a part of the fried delicacy, Ren began his questioning. "Alright, in that case, it's my turn to ask questions. What's going on in Reunion now?"

"So you're going to cut me off right here and now, when I still have so many things to ask about your Arts?"

"Come on. Don't you think you've learnt enough about it, already? Think of this as me owing you another solid."

A knowing smirk can be seen on W's face as she nodded. "Okay~. In that case, I'll just give it you straight up, Doctor. You've been making a lot of waves in Reunion ever since you gave Talulah the well-deserved hurl into the rocks. Look at you, getting popular so easily~"

"Being popular amongst your enemies is honestly a mixed bag. But what's the general consensus?"

"Well, you certainly made yourself distinct from how the Doctor works, Joker. The Doctor wouldn't spare any enemy that he comes across in the past." There was a certain indescribable feeling he felt when the Sarkaz spoke those words before she continued. "That's what made some folks over on Reunion look up to you. Either that, or they're scared shitless because of your Personas and how you apparently threw Talulah into the dirt."

"Let me guess. Mephisto's folks are with the people who are scared shitless of me?"

W proceeded to laugh at the answer. "Hahaha! I don't even know if scared shitless is even accurate! That little runt is practically holding grudges towards you all because you beat him so hard! And I thought the helpless screams of people blowing up are funnier!"

Disturbing comparisons aside, Ren found himself shaking his head at what Mephisto had ended up becoming in the aftermath of his rescue operation. Then again, considering how that kid treated his soldiers as literal pawns, along with his general faux-affable attitude, he had no right to act like a sore loser after being so utterly defeated in combat and tactics. There was no shred of sympathy for Mephisto from Ren after learning about this. Not in the slightest.

"Aaanyway. Exploding people aside, What's the deets on the other leaders? If I'm so popular as you claim, surely the other leaders of Reunion have heard of me as well."

"Hah? You really expect me to just tell you what every leader thinks of you? Rumors go fast, but don't you think you're putting up too much on my payroll?"

Realizing that he's pushing too hard on the questions, Ren decided to dial back. "Fine, make it one of the leaders then. Your choice."

"My choice, huh~? Now that's more like it. Who should I pick..." Ren eyed W carefully as she seemingly thought about her choice. "Since I'm in a very good mood today, I'll just tell you how Skull Shatterer feels about you after what you did."

There was a knowing smirk on W's face, and Ren quickly picked up on it. "You're giving me info on the scouting party leader, are you?"

"Haha. Good on you to get it, Joker~. You're right. Skull Shatterer's the one who brought me and Ethan over here, along with his own posse. I suppose I should be lucky that Talulah assigned me to watch over the runt."

"Runt, huh? You're saying that he's a kid like Amiya as well?"

"Yes, but that's beside the point. If you wanna talk about what he thinks, then let me say this. He's honestly quite outraged over what you did."

"Outraged?"

W nodded in response. "Outraged. Nobody would say it out loud, much less his comrades, but he has quite the zealous streak going with him. He's real dedicated to Reunion's cause of bringing equality to the Infected so much so that he believes that they're the official good guys in this nonsense. Honestly makes me sick."

Ren frowned at W's words. There's only one single outcome to that kind of thinking. "And he thinks that everyone else are the bad guys, Rhodes Island included."

"Hit the nail on the head. How he's so high on kissing Talulah's ass is beyond me, but someone has to knock in the fact that black and white mix into gray. Would be real satisfying to see him get in a good dose of reality." The Sarkaz flashed a enticing smirk as she munched on a piece. "In fact, if you're able to do that for me, Joker, I'd say you're doing both of us a favor~"

The Joker had to admit, putting Skull Shatterer out of commission definitely falls in line with the W's wishes and Rhodes Island's goals. W will be able to get the satisfaction, and he'll be able to find out about Reunion's plans in a more direct manner without any interference from the L.G.D whatsoever.

And, while he hasn't been a Phantom Thief in a long while, the Thief spirit in him wanted to know what drove Skull Shatterer to have that black and white point of view. He may not have the Metaverse Navigator anymore, or if it's possible for the Metaverse to manifest in Terra, but perhaps he can have Philemon pull some strings to make it possible?

For now, he can only put this thought in the back burner. "Well, depending on how the situation develops from here, I'll see what I can do."

W gave Ren a look of satisfaction. "I guess I have to be satisfied with that answer. Well, in any case, I'd say our business went along great, wouldn't you say~?"

"Not before you give me your phone number. Besides, it's mandatory at this point for business partners to give each other their contacts."

"No need~. Already got it from Kevin. Quite the cooperative fellow now that he's part of your own, I'd say. Well, if we're done here, I think it's time I head back. Hope you don't miss me, Joker~"

"Please, if anything, we'd be meeting each other so much that you'll be sick of me. I'd say that's more likely."

The laughter of the mercenary graced Ren's ears as she walked away from the bar, the door closing on her steps. Now left on his lonesome, with an empty plate, a half-empty glass of water, and an envelope filled with Reunion dirt, Ren can only sigh, thinking back on his busy day. The only saving grace is that he has more info to work on when he goes into the next phase of his plans. Yet the fatigue was slowly overcoming his psyche.

"Consumed by lethargy already, Trickster?"

The familiar voice of Arsene rang in his ears. "Honestly, yes. I don't remember info gathering to be this tiring."

"Such is to be expected when you are preparing for a performance. Do you not remember that you have prepared for situations far more dire than this? Or is your new body simply not accustomed still?"

Ren let out a groan. "Probably because my stamina is still not strong enough. No offense to the good Doctor, but you're in the body of someone who mostly does research all the time, it doesn't do well if your next host is very active in comparison."

"Then you know what you must do. Continue to temper and hone yourself, both in body and soul, so that you can reclaim your full glory. I will not settle for anything less."

Arsene soon faded away from the forefront of his mind, with Ren letting out a yawn afterward. Drinking up his share of cold water down to the last drop and saying his goodbyes to Zheng and Muji, Ren departed from the Hui Jia Underground. The sun shone on his face as he stepped out into the city suburbs, and he stretched his arms out. With the envelope safely kept in his pocket, he thought on what to do next. Of course, returning back to Rhodes Island to submit his findings would be the most logical reason, but...

"...Let's see what kind of Chinese snacks they have in Lungmen. Wonder if they have dumplings loaded with cheese..."

- Take Your Time -

12:23 P.M / Cloudy

Rhodes Island Docking Bay

"I have to thank whatever god is available to allow me to get your contact number. I can't believe I forgot to ask for the numbers of the Penguin girls."

"Hahaha. Don't sweat it, kid. After all, we're business partners. Favors like this are as simple as flipping a coin. Besides, we don't want those fresh buns to lose heat, and I happen to love their buns."

It was truly an oversight on Ren's part to forget about getting Exusiai and Texas' phone contacts. Especially since Texas is the one who no doubt handles the transport for Penguin Logistics. The fact that the thought crossed his mind after he got his snacks made him want to kick himself. Luckily enough, through the help of Zenkichi, he managed to get Baofu's contact number. After a quick call, the gold Lung businessman arrived in minutes, and brought him back to Rhodes Island a few minutes more.

"Anyway, while we're on the subject, kid. I'm guessing you haven't dug up any dirt on Mystery Penguin Girl Number 6?"

"Nope. All I ever dug up is dirt on Reunion and their plans for getting into Lungmen. Situation isn't looking too hot."

Baofu let out a sigh, tilting his head back as they walked towards the main entrance. "Figures. I suppose it can't be helped, considering how elusive she is based on rumors. With how much you have on your plate with Reunion and all that shit, I won't push you."

"Appreciate it, Baofu. Especially when said Reunion is planning to take over this whole city. With these plans in our hands, we can better plan our actions in Lungmen moving forward."

"Long as you remember that we got your backs, Doc. Partners stick together."

Ren hummed in agreement at Baofu's words. In the conflict against Reunion, he's going to need all the help in this war, supposedly from Shadow's words. And even after Reunion is over and dealt with, there is still a lot more things that he has to do to prepare himself for whatever threat Philemon mentioned before he arrived in Terra. In the event that he has to face those enemies for himself, he's going to need all the allies he can get. Many heads are better than a single head, after all.

The cold air of Rhodes Island's interior blew into the bodies of the two as they entered through the metallic door, eliciting a good sigh of relief from the two men. The Joker had no idea what Baofu's business was, but it was clear that he was as spent as he is. Maybe he can treat him to a meal? It's lunch hour after all.

It was made more apparent when he heard the sounds of a grumbling stomach, and it came from Baofu, no less. "Whew! Sorry bout that, Doc. Haven't had lunch at all and all I ate are rice crackers."

"Haha. Well, Rhodes Island just happens to have a cafeteria. It's lunch hour, so we may have a problem in getting a seat."

"Heh, I don't care about seating arrangements right now, Dr. Ren. If anything, I'm more interested in what this cafeteria of yours has to offer. Lead the way, my good man."

Ren can only shrug with a snort as the two continued to walk down the corridors, with Operators going on and about their days. The usual exchange of greetings occured every now and then, and not much conversation was made. Only when they entered the elevator going to the second floor did Baofu open his mouth.

"So, how did it go with the Penguins? Are my words trustworthy?"

"Considering their whole roster included a super idol, a literal talking penguin, and someone with a Southern accent thick enough for the Wild West, definitely trustworthy."

Ren's response was enough to make the Chinese man crack up in laughter. "You actually managed to describe two of those girls way better than I did! Hilarious!"

"Well, it's even more hilarious when it's fact. Besides, they're not so bad once you get to know them better. Think we're gonna get along just fine."

"Guess Zenkichi was right when he said that you'll fit right in with them. You didn't get into any trouble with them, no?"

Ren shook his head. "On the contrary, everything carried on without much trouble. Anyway, how about you, Baofu? Managed to finish the errand?"

"As easy as copy and print, Doctor. Honestly, I feel hurt that you feel that way. Are you seriously underestimating Midsummer tech?"

"No, no! If anything I'm just very curious on the amount of tech that Philemon invested in. Judging by the holographic banners and signs, he must have invested a lot."

Baofu proceeded to laugh at the guess. "My earthen friend, a lot would be a huge understatement if you want to learn about cognitive psience. I may be not smart enough to understand the roots of Carl Jung's bullcrap, but I know how to work in business. Words can't even begin to express how much it was on the receipt. Do you really wanna know the amount?"

"Hit me."

Ren attentively listened to the slow whispers of Baofu. As soon as he heard of the grand total, speechless doesn't even begin to cover his emotions. He slowly turned towards Baofu, an amused look on his face.

"...Fuck. Let's stop talking about this."

"Fuck indeed. I told you, man. I told you."

As soon as they emerged from the elevator at B3, the walk forward was fully encased in small talk. Not a word of anything was uttered from their lips between the two men regarding the previous conversation as they headed for the cafeteria. Of course, greetings between Operators occured still, but even they knew that for the time being, the Doctor and his Lung associate would be better off undisturbed in their talks. Only the sounds of footsteps on metal floor and the rustles of the paper bag containing dumplings can be heard throughout the trip along with their chattering.

In a few minutes, the two of them reached the cafeteria doors. Considering the noises of activity happening inside, lunch hour is still in full swing, and the smell of delicious food wafted from within. One particular vampire sauntered out of the doors, a satisfied look on her face as she patted her belly.

"Ahhh~ That kid Lada really knows how to cook! That borscht tastes so... Oh, Doctor!"

The excited look of Closure running towards Ren and Baofu made the former smile lightly. "Good to see you, Closure. I'm guessing Lada's manning the kitchen today?"

"You bet! That little sweet girl really knows how to make a killer Ursus lunch buffet! Nothing beats your Higashi curry coffee combo though!"

Hearing Closure's praise, Baofu let out a whistle. "You cook for the cafeteria, Doc? Gotta say, if this young miss here is singing praises for your work, then I have to let my taste buds confirm for myself. And I love me some damn good coffee for work."

"Haha. I don't think I'll be serving curry today, but I can always treat you to coffee whenever you're in office." Closure grinned at Ren's offer.

"You know, Doctor, if you're offering like that to him, maybe I should spread some news! By the way, who's this gold guy? Never seen him before."

Ren was just about to move to introductions, but Baofu immediately took the lead. "Pleasure to meet you, young miss. Shang Baofu, multitalented chauffeur for Midsummers Dream Laboratories, at your service." The added bow afterward was something Ren deemed extra, and he snorted.

"Chauffeur? You look more like a fancy businessman than a car driver with the gold suit and suitcase! Speaking of fancy, surely you won't mind giving away some of your riches in the name of teamwork, yes?"

"Hah! I thought Phil gave out the necessary funds already. Sorry, kid. I'm just a chauffeur, like I said. Plus, you're just making your own company look bad in comparison. Quite shameless, wouldn't you say?"

The stunned silence from Closure was in sharp contrast to the cacophony of laughter coming from the Personas in Ren's head. Most of the laughter came from Arsene, Heeho, and Walter, with various comments from the imp over how she got roasted with the highest caliber. Ren himself was struggling to hold in his own laugh, and Baofu looked so proud of himself. The vampire that took the heat recovered through serious stutters.

"...A-anyway, disregarding that comment that is so clearly untrue..." A statement that made the men roll their eyeballs. "If you're not hungry at the moment, can I ask you something, Doctor?"

"I'm not hungry right now, yes. What is it? Is my project coming by swiftly?"

"It's going with a few hitches, but I'll get by with Mechanist's help. That's not something I want your help with though." Closure exhaled shortly befor continuing. "Can you join me for a meeting in 25 minutes?"

"A meeting. What for?"

"To discuss the progress of your plan, duh! Kevin's official report really gave us some high hopes on the success of your plan. Plus, we managed to get another Reunion guy defecting into our ranks! Now with all this in our hands, we wanna know what your findings are, Doctor!"

Closure's excitement aside, which seemed on par considering the strides he has made during their small Lungmen excursion, there's something about the meeting that made Ren lift an eyebrow out of wariness. To make certainty of the matter, he decided to ask a relatively simple question.

"I'm guessing Kal'tsit will be attending the meeting as well?"

"Obviously. You came up with a plan that ultimately jacked hers and buried it 6 feet under. Of course she'd want to find out how your plan is going! If we can really stick it to the L.G.D and force them on equal terms, we'll be making bank!"

If Ren was having any apprehension to the clarification, he's not showing it. "I see. I'll just go to my room and freshen up, as well as change my clothes. I'll be attending the meeting, Closure. No worries."

Closure's smile was as joyful as it could have been. "Great! In that case, I'll be seeing you in Meeting Room 1 then! Later, Dr. Ren!"

The vampire mechanic ran off with a giddy step, yet the Doctor himself felt himself frowning. Baofu caught on to his weary expression.

"Hey, Doc. Looks to me you're not really so happy to hear what that vamp said. Something on your mind? Feeling extra wary because of Kal'tsit?"

"I myself am unsure if it's just because of Kal'tsit. I have a hunch that whatever is going to come up from that meeting, I'm not going to like it."

The gold businessman soon found himself frowning as well. "Well, all I can say is if that hunch of yours proves to be correct, then I can only wish you all the luck I can give. My two coins say that whatever happens, you can't go into this meeting alone. You need backup."

Ren already had someone in mind, and nodded in response. "Yeah. You go ahead and go have your lunch, Baofu. Hope you enjoy Russian meals."

"Always wanted to know what the slavs eat up north, my good man. I'll leave you be for the prep. See ya."

Now on his lonesome, Ren quickly left the area and headed for the dormitories with haste. He has a good enough memory of where the meeting rooms are, being on floor B3. With 23 minutes left on the clock, he's going to have to be quick to change his clothes and find his backup with Baofu's advice. With any luck, he'll find the feline over in the area where the Ursus Student Self-Government Group is staying.

"Only problem is if I can find where those girls are staying. Dammit."

12:57 P.M / Mild Rain

Meeting Room Hallway / Rhodes Island

Finding the U.S.S.G dormitory turned out to be as simple as asking questions to a Logistics Operator. After getting dressed in his R.I work jacket and a more formal, yet still comfy attire, Ren quickly headed towards the dormitories on the hunt for Morgana. One knock led to a conversation with Sonya, with the carefree girl telling him that Morgana is off having a tea party with Natalya. He didn't remember if Morgana ever drank tea back on Earth, but if he was content with having tea parties, then he's not going to judge when he's no normal cat in the first place.

Luckily enough, Natalya is perfectly willing to end the tea party short, with both her and Morgana promising to have another tea party in the future. Now with his most trusted partner by his side, the two moved into the hallways to Meeting Room 1, where the supposed meeting will take place.

"So...Why are you bringing me to this meeting with you, Ren? I mean, you guys are just going to talk about your discoveries in Lungmen, right? I know I'm one of the guys scoping Reunion out as well, but..."

Ren looked down at Morgana walking right beside him, the cat's face curious and confused. "I know. I'm sure that Kevin mentioned you in your report too doing your best, but I have a hunch that this meeting will go way beyond talking about our discoveries. I need you to be my second to even the playing field, so to speak."

"Even the playing field? I mean, Miss Closure is the one who invited you, so that's one person. Anyone else who will attend?"

"That's what I don't know, all I know is that Kal'tsit will be there. That's all I need to know to keep my guard up."

"Why's that? I haven't seen this Ms. Kal'tsit myself."

"I just got the details from Baofu. Apparently she doesn't trust the power of Persona and she demands medical proof. Philemon just asked him to deliver a copy of some medical files just for that."

The answer silenced Morgana as they walked, the cat frowning while in thought. "That is concerning, alright. Besides, aren't we living proof that Persona users don't have to deal with medical complications?"

"I guess she'll only be satisfied with recorded proof. And to her eyes, we're fresh off the woodwork."

"Guess we'll have to be prepared for anything then, I guess. Let's hope we're just talking about our operation earlier."

A silent agreement was made as the two carried on towards Meeting Room 1. As soon as they entered the room minutes later, the doctor and cat were greeted with three people already inside. Closure waved him over to take a seat once she saw him, but her expression soon shifted to confusion once she saw Morgana.

"Huh? Why is Morgana here, Doctor?"

Ren himself has his own set of questions after seeing who's present. "There's no harm in me bringing in someone who also participated in this operation, no? You can trust Morgana to not blow anything about this meeting to anyone. Speaking of which, why is Warfarin here? And where is Amiya? I thought she'd like to know about this meeting too."

The vampire medic on the right seat dropped a sweat. "Amiya's got a very busy schedule today, and we promise to relay the results of the meeting to her afterward. Plus, while I may be unrelated to the operation's progress, but I was personally asked by Kal'tsit to attend as one of the higher-ups."

Ren wasn't sure if Warfarin's words implied anything, but pushing on it would be a waste of time. "Point taken. Let's start this meeting up then." Ren took his seat with Morgana seizing his lap, getting a good look at everyone before staring at the lynx before him. "Kal'tsit. Guessing you have some words to say as a preface?"

Kal'tsit, with her arms laid on each other on the table, began to speak. "In that case, let us begin by referencing Operator Kevin and Morgana's successes on the former's report, as all of you can see from these copies."

The small of stack of papers Kal'tsit prepared beforehand were handed to everyone present, one for each with the exception of both Ren and Morgana looking over a single copy once the feline leapt onto the table. The copy itself was entirely handwritten, and it's readable enough to work, though a bit rigid.

"I gotta say. You guys actually unearthed a lot more than I expected! Reunion's hideout, their leader and group compositions, and a bunch of other things too!"

"Indeed. Though, I have to wonder what actually happened on the field for you people to actually achieve these results. It's a good thing you brought Morgana along then, Doctor. Maybe he can give us a recount of what happened on the field from the beginning?"

"Gladly."

Morgana catwalked his way to the center of the table before beginning his report. News of his capabilities of conversation had already spread far and wide among Rhodes, and to the 4 higher ups of the company present, especially Ren, none of them seems surprised in the slightest.

"For starters, it took us 1 hour to link up with the refugee line as soon as we're dropped off. I don't know if Kevin mentioned it in the report, but it was like a mass exodus of people from one city to another. Couple that with the wasteland heat, and we practically had to preserve our water with small sips."

"Again, honestly wished we packed you a lot more water bottles. How long did it take for you two to get to Lungmen? Hopefully not too long."

"On the contrary, we suffered quite some setbacks. The journey to Lungmen itself wasn't difficult, but it was a mess trying to get into the plate in the first place. The one time we looked up and it's a literal sea of people trying their hardest to get in." Everyone present had various degrees of frowns on their faces as the cat continued. "The gates even closed due to the occasional riots, and we had to wait for nearly 30 minutes for the gates to open again every time. Honestly? Calling the situation a mess is a huge understatement."

Kal'tsit is the first to raise her voice. "I see. Forgoing for the Doctor's plan seems to be detrimental on this end, but what matters is your successful entry. Kevin's report indicate that there is no Reunion activity as of now in Lungmen?"

"Yes. I actually snuck into the Reunion compound, or slum junkyard being true to word. There's not a lot of white coats about in there, and most of them look to be technicians of some sort. Not many are armed. We're not sure if there's going to be more Reunion troops coming, but we have a guess on their entry point if we do."

Closure screened through the report after hearing from Morgana, nodding slightly. "The sewage pipes, huh? If Kevin's words have any merit, then their jetpacks are going to be vital assets to their entryway. Plus, whatever packs they built will definitely be nothing compared to the ones they ransacked from the Ursus military."

"Again, all of this is speculation on our end, Miss Closure. Speculations that we believe is highly likely. Please understand."

"We understand, Morgana. You have our word on that. Is that the end of the report?"

Morgana nodded appreciatively towards Warfarin, with his next response being his retreat back to Ren's side. With Morgana's report done, Kal'tsit spoke once more. "Now, I believe it is time for the Doctor to share his own findings. To begin, how is your progress in reaching an agreement with Penguin Logistics?"

"The partnership with the Penguins turned out better than expected. Emperor is willing to become our lifelong business partner, but only if we manage to fulfill a requirement of his."

"That is to be expected due to our previous associations. What is his condition?"

"...We have to make one of his girls more famous."

The entire room came to a silent stop once Ren spoke of Emperor's condition, with Warfarin speaking up in disbelief after a solid minute. "...Do you mind explaining what you mean by that, Dr. Ren?"

Once again, Ren is grateful his mask was on to hide his expression bordering on cracking up. "You heard me well, Warfarin. Emperor insists that we help one of his girls achieve more fame in the music business or the deal's bust. He may be leading a very dubious logistics company. But this is all a side gig compared to his main one."

"Well... to be fair, Emperor is Terra's number one rapper. Taking someone under his wing in music is to be expected of him at one point. But asking us for help?! How are we even supposed help this girl rise in the music industry?! We don't even have..." Closure drifted off in her words, her expression stilled as if she was thinking back on something before she had a very mischievous look. "Ohhhhohoho. I see what you're planning, Doctor. Very devious of you!"

Kal'tsit spoke up, her face remaining passive despite her slight confusion. "What is it that you are implying, Closure?"

Closure's smirk remained while addressing her passive superior. "Kal'tsit. Remember when we talked about what Doctor did ever since his first days on the landship? I told you that the Operators saw him and Vigna jamming out in the music room earlier, right? This entire agreement is basically a win-win for both sides since we can also capitalize on the fame and profit we get if this deal comes through! Imagine being signed under Monster Siren Records of all places!"

During the whole conversation, Ren found the entirety of it uncomfortable, yet amusing to hear. By the time he realized that he and Vigna gathered an audience that day. Both of them decided to just give up and continue jamming to their audience, garnering lots of cheers from many other Operators that he barely remembered. He glanced at Morgana, and the sight of his cat-like grin was something he expected.

Still, what made him uncomfortable is the fact that Closure had been blabbering about him to Kal'tsit. Closure's way of talking meant that the two of them are close, which is something he won't judge. He's just hoping that whatever Closure mentioned about him to Kal'tsit, it is all completely harmless.

"Hmm. Then there is no reason not to proceed with this agreement. Is there anything else you wish to show us, Doctor?"

"There is, actually. Everyone, I'd like you to take a look at what is inside this."

Closure and Warfarin looked at Ren in curiosity as he pulled out an envelope from the inner pockets of his jacket. He opened the envelope to reveal a set of papers that he placed in the middle of table. Morgana gave the Doctor a look as the others looked at the envelopes contents. What followed afterwards are looks of surprise from the present vampires, while Kal'tsit looked with dropped eyebrows.

"H-holy... What...how did you get this, Doctor?!"

"Lungmen invasion plans... Secured entry points, and this is all in handwriting! This is insane!"

"It is clear that this was not written by any of our Operators, considering the timeframe. It begs the question as to how you managed to achieve these results, Doctor."

The probing question prompted Ren to answer in a dismissive tone. "I will admit that I employed someone's help to get these plans, but for the sake of confidentiality and integrity, I will not disclose any names whatsoever. The fact that they managed to get these plans is already a huge help, and it's an equally huge hassle getting it."

Ren's eyes beheld Kal'tsit's narrow stare, but a single look was enough to tell her that he won't say any further. "Very well, in either case, what Dr. Ren managed to retrieve in his endeavors shall be bundled with the rest of the discoveries made by both Operators Kevin and Morgana. This will all be stored for later use in future briefings."

Warfarin quickly shook her head. "Not just future briefings, Kal'tsit. I heard from Closure that Dr. Ren is planning to get us on even ground with the L.G.D by proving that Reunion is working on Lungmen grounds, right? We practically have surefire ammunition on our hands now!"

"Yep, and we couldn't have gotten all these without the Doctor's smooth language! Nice going Dr. Ren!"

Ren simply nodded with an appreciative hum, yet a great amount relief can be seen beneath the face mask that he wears. The tried and true "C & I" card is always a great one to play when one questions the dubiousness of his important sources. He was unsure if not revealing W's role in getting this information is a good idea, her stances considered. Kal'tsit's previous reaction to the mercenary's info however assured him that his choice of moves was the correct one, and he's not going to say otherwise. Looking down at Morgana, he found the cat looking at him proudly at his weaving in the situation.

With everything regarding the current progress of his plan seemingly discussed in full length already, Ren was about to stand up when Closure quickly stopped him. "Wait, wait! Doctor! The meeting isn't even finished yet!" He was understandably confused as a result.

"Why? I'm assuming we're done with our discussion regarding my plans, right?"

"Well, yes. But actually, there's something else that we have to discuss before the meeting is adjourned!"

"Such as?"

"Your actions past week at the day of your rescue, Dr. Ren. That is what we will discuss next."

Ren stared directly at Kal'tsit directly after she spoke, wincing at her words. What he and Baofu anticipated might actually come true, and his mood soon dropped into a wary state. Morgana himself grew worried, and stared back at Kal'tsit with equal amounts of wariness.

"...I'm starting to understand why you 3 didn't bring Amiya into this meeting. And believe me when I say that I don't like it still."

Warfarin spoke up in order to placate the Doctor. "Listen, Doctor. I wasn't joking when I talked about Amiya's schedule. But the issue of your behavior on your rescue day touches on a matter more important than you might expect. So much so that we can't tell Amiya about this. Please understand."

"And since this is a very sensitive subject, I would like to ask Morgana to leave the room. While your trustworthiness is proven many times based on the referrals of other Operators, we cannot risk an information leak regardless of the fact."

Ren stared at Morgana, who was looking back at him in a very worried fashion. He very much wanted Morgana to stay in case something goes wrong, but he didn't want to risk unnecessary repercussions for Morgana due to disobeying a superior. Especially, if the matter Warfarin speaks of is as important as she claims.

'This is most likely the case of your proclamation.'

Shadow's voice rang from within Ren's mind. Yet considering the severity of the situation and who they're dealing with, it would be surprising if he didn't speak up.'The proclamation? You mean that time at the park?'

'Yes, with Kal'tsit serving alongside me during my tenure in Babel, there is little doubt that she too will question you regarding your declaration of being a Demon Lord. Truly cunning of the dame lynx to question you under such a farce of a meeting, despite the previous discussion. Though, how she managed to discover that fact is left to speculation.'

There is only one person present that may have potentially broke the news of the declaration. '...Closure! That... No matter. It doesn't help that Vampires are also Sarkaz by default. Anyway, what are we to do, Shadow? I know nothing about this Demon Lord conspiracy other than what you told me!'

'That will serve as the focal point for our plan's basis. No doubt that Kal'tsit will continuously probe you for anything since in her eyes, you, and by extension me, are no more than amnesiac Kings on an empty endless board with no path to go.'

Ren thought upon Shadow's vague hints once more, arriving to a quick conclusion. 'If she thinks of us as amnesiacs, then we'll just make her believe that we're no more than amnesiacs. That should get her off our tail most of the time.

A low chuckle resounded from Shadow as he listened. 'Truly, your quick assessments are worthy of commendation. However, while you play the role of the Arcana you represent, you must not let the role extend to your mind as well.'

'Also known as not playing dumb?'

'Correct. I have seen your capabilities in this world to adapt and learn. Your Residual Recollection, your time serving meals at the dining hall, your penchant for music, and much more. Maintain such a consistency in your behavior, and the lynx will soon find our act to be a believed truth.'

'Then let's hope this plan works then.'

By the time he snapped back to reality, everyone's eyes are on Ren. Morgana in particular still kept the worried look.

"Ren? Are you alright?"

"...Morgana. Listen to Kal'tsit for now. Please leave the room."

"But-"

"I'll be fine. You go ahead and take a stroll."

With hesitant steps, Morgana leapt down from the meeting table, leaving the room shortly. The interaction they had prompted Closure to speak her thoughts.

"You and Morgana are very close, aren't you, Dr. Ren? It's like he's as much of a companion for you as he is for those Ursus students. It's only been a week, right?"

"Yes. We really hit it off quick, to the point of us sleeping together on the same bed. But enough about that. What did I do over in Chernobog to warrant a sensitive discussion? Was it because of my Persona?"

Despite Ren's guarded behavior, Kal'tsit decided to push on. "No. But perhaps we can discuss your newfound Arts first. Have you faced any complications when using it, Doctor?"

"Complications. As in health disorders?"

"Yes, Doctor. While we now know that there are multiple Persona users as our associates. You are our first instance of the event of awakening such Arts. We want to know if there's anything we can do to help as fellow doctors."

He found Warfarin's concerns to be understandable. He remembered the first time he awakened to his Persona, and it invited a pain train of great magnitude that struck his head. The same degree of hurt also happened when he awakened the second time, but when it comes to a user's conditions afterward...

"I appreciate your concern, Warfarin. I'm doing relatively fine so far. No complications so far."

"Hmm... I see. Thank you for answering, Doctor. That's a relief."

From a medical standpoint, it's always important for a doctor to make sure their patient is doing well in the event they awaken to the power of Arts. However, for Kal'tsit who knows the truth of the Persona's origins, she decided to probe in a different angle. "Yes. Next comes to how well you've honed your Persona, Dr. Ren. As a user of such Arts, how does it feel to experience it firsthand?"

A direct question. Ren, considering both Shadow and W's warnings, is sufficiently surprised. He'll oblige regardless. "If anything, I feel as if my physical constitution in general has gotten stronger in general, yet also feeling as if I still have a long way to go. I already have a good grasp on how to use it, but right now, I'm still at the tip of the iceberg."

"Elaborate on this matter then. You are saying that your power has the potential to grow even stronger? Even though it is already powerful enough to allow you to stand your ground against the leader of Reunion?"

"On the contrary, Kal'tsit, the power I exhibited earlier, it feels like a massive burst that can be controlled, yet seemingly in a limited timeframe. The power of the Arts I have now feels as if it dialled down on itself."

Kal'tsit lifted an eyebrow at the admission. "You mean to say that your power has somehow... restrained itself?"

Closure swiftly interjected. "I don't think Doctor's own Arts restrained itself, Kal'tsit. Rather, I'd say his Arts just adjusted itself to Doctor's own physical condition. I know the Doctor still has the smarts, but he definitely isn't the leading figure of physical fitness, even though he's now exercising daily."

Ren let out a sigh. He's aware that Shadow's body, which is also his body, is currently still physically weak, but hearing the engineer rub it in is definitely getting on his nerves. Also, he's pretty damn sure that physical strength is not the only deciding factor. If anything, a Persona's power depends entirely on the user's entire being.

"If what you say is true, Closure, then the nature of his Arts adaptation must be put into question. The more we know about his strengths, the better we can monitor his condition."

"Yes. With that said, can you cooperate with us further, Dr. Ren? Try comparing your experiences from back then to now. How did it feel like during those times?"

"As long as I don't end up being a lab rat for the observations of you three. I have that enough from you, Warfarin."

Ren's words immediately made both Kal'tsit and Closure look at Warfarin in various ways, which made her feel doubly uncomfortable. "O-of course. You can trust me to keep our promises, Doctor."

"Thank you."

With the time provided, Ren began to think back on when he awakened to Arsene the second time, along with its pain-filled moments. To be fair to Kal'tsit, this is the first time he's ever had a second awakening, and the feeling of having so much power at the very start would make anyone drunk on power if they lack the self-control. As someone who has earned the World Arcana, making use of powerful physical attacks with Arsene along with Eigaons and Maeigaons felt like a breeze.

The only problem is Shadow's body being unable to maintain constant high level spellcasting. Say what you will about how weak Doctor's body is, but his low energy made it very taxing to cast such spells. The awakening managed to boost his energy reserves and physical prowess, but that burst of energy is ultimately temporary. Add that to the harrowing combat, and no one can blame him for passing out by the end of it.

"Thinking back, when I first awakened to my Persona, it's like I've just received a great burst of power, along with greatly enhanced physical capabilities and penchant for complex Arts that I can liberally use. Only problem is that as the battle went on, using those high level Arts became very taxing, and I ended up having to resort to mostly melee combat. By the time I fled, my energy was diminishing and I was only running on battle adrenaline."

There was nothing but attentive stares from the three Terrans present, meaning a green light for him to continue. "Compared to now though, my Persona feels magnitudes weaker, and even the repertoire of capabilities and physical boost are weaker as well. The good thing is because my Arts are considerably weaker now, it doesn't feel as taxing when I cast it frequently. Helps that these kinds of Arts can be used in many ways."

Kal'tsit was the first to speak after a round of silence. "Hmm. Based on the Doctor's words, his awakening granted him great power at the expense of his mental capacity from prolonged usage."

"And his current condition basically means, his Persona practically adapted itself to match the current condition of his body? I've seen a lot of different Arts before, but I don't think I've seen Arts that adapt to the user's body this easily. It's almost like Sarkaz Witchcraft, except it isn't. Hmm..." Ren quickly made a mental note on Sarkaz Witchcraft that Warfarin mentioned. That's one more subject he has to learn about, if he's going to assume that Arts used by Sarkaz are distinguishable.

"Adaptive Arts like this are definitely a dime-a-dozen! And to think, this all originates from the Doctor's soul and is already rare in itself! I'd say we really lucked out on this one!"

With the mention of souls, Ren found it proper to follow up. "Going off on that tangent, Closure, do you remember that time when Philemon gave his presentation about Personas?"

Kal'tsit's eyes fixed themselves upon Ren over his words, yet Closure replied in blissful ignorance. "Philemon's? Uh... I don't really remember much about it, other than the soul and ego schtick and how he said that Personas are from a new branch of Arts. Ego Arts, was it?"

"You mean how the power of Persona originates from our own ego-slash-inner conscious? I remember that his company strives to nurture the ego of Persona users through life experiences, guiding them towards improving their power... Wait, are you implying what I think you're implying, Dr. Ren?"

The Doctor nodded succinctly. "Yes. What I'm trying to say is, if our Personas do come from our inner conscious and are empowered by experience, then shouldn't it be reasonable to say that my Arts adapted to be weaker because I'm an amnesiac?"

"You mean to say that the reason of your Arts adaptation is due to... your former experiences being wiped clean into a blank slate?"

"Yes, Kal'tsit. That's my hypothesis so far. For now at least."

Many thoughts circulated between the three women as they silently summarized Ren's theories and statements to their respective questions. Warfarin thought carefully on how the power of Persona that Doctor exhibited can be linked to her knowledge of Sarkaz Witchcraft. Even though Personas fall under a branch of the newly discovered Ego Arts as per Philemon's presentation, there are some similiarities between both of them that she can't ignore altogether. As soon as they're done with this meeting, she's going to have to re-read her collection of books pertaining to Sarkaz Arts. As the doctor that Dr. Ren placed his faith on with the promise of blood, she sincerely wanted to help him as much as possible, and definitely not because of the blood.

Closure on the other hand smiled as she considered what she just heard earlier. She's no Sarkaz Arts enthusiast like Warfarin, but she knows enough to agree that with her own words that Dr. Ren's powers are one of a kind, which she wouldn't pawn off to anyone else. Sure, his powers right now are a far cry compared to what she saw in the Battle Records, but Arts like Dr. Ren's can grow over time. If her interactions with Philemon during the time at the Training Hall were worth anything, she hopes that Ren's power can be shared with other Operators, starting with weapon augmentations that she hopes to initiate with Midsummer Labs' help. Perhaps the power of Persona can applied in many other ways too, like specialized combat drones!

Kal'tsit, however, after learning about the truth of what Persona truly is, can only wonder about what the hell did Philemon tell to both Warfarin and Closure, and most likely Amiya as well regarding this bestowed power. Whatever he explained to them, he certainly convinced them that Personas are Arts native to Terra. Kal'tsit was not the type to undermine the efforts of others who currently aren't on the threatening spectrum, and it seems that the visitor has made an honest word on his attempt to present Personas as very unique Arts. Warfarin herself gained an acquired interest on the subject while Closure, knowing her, would seek ways to use the powers the Doctor has for improving Rhodes Island in various ways.

Still, Ego Arts... The choice of his labeling to mask the Personas... The lynx found it adequate enough, considering what the source of Philemon's power lies. A person's form of Arts is often expressed from different factors, and ego is one of them. The problem right now however, is if she should reveal the truth of the Personas to Closure and Warfarin, both her trusted confidants after the meeting is over. Telling them would be able to clear up any misleading notions that Philemon created in their minds, yet it'll also a form of betrayal of the trust that the visitor himself placed upon her, even if her trust towards him are not equal in the slightest.

After a long minute of silence. Kal'tsit let out a breath. Such matters can be dealt with when the time comes. "Very well, I will not push into this matter further. I can only ask that you continue to pursue the inner workings of Personas, Doctor. Your power is still worth many mysteries, and it'll be hard to unveil them all, even with the aid of Midsummers."

"You have my word on that, Kal'tsit, considering that I'm just as curious as you are and everyone else. Now, what is this important matter that you want to talk about, which is so dire that you have to kick Morgana out?"

Ren expected Kal'tsit to answer, but not Closure. "Well, in that case, I hope your memory is strong still, Dr. Ren. The Chernobog Rescue report files say that your rescue team and Ace's team had to go through a park to reach Nearl's rendezvous point and ended up skirmishing with a Reunion contingent led by ringleaders Mephisto and Faust. Do you remember that?"

"Of course I remember, considering how annoying it was to deal with that silver runt. I'm more concerned with how you managed to sneak a peek at the report files, Closure. Aren't they supposed to be confidential?"

"Listen, I had to beg Kal'tsit to allow me to look at them! It took me at least hours and even then, I only got to look for 30 seconds!" Ren can't help but look at both Kal'tsit and Closure when the latter whined about the matter in judgemental fashion. Whether it's true or not, he's definitely less than impressed. "Anyway! I didn't get to look at it entirely, but I heard from the rumor mill that you really tore into Mephisto. Except..."

It took Ren all he had to not give Closure the death stare. "Except what? Spill it."

"I will get straight to the point, then. You have proclaimed yourself as a Demon Lord, have you not?"

And thus, the main issue of the meeting is brought out, and the atmosphere grew tense from the sharp and direct question as all eyes are on the Doctor for the accusation. Due to anticipation, Ren was already prepared to handle this with care, and he spoke with equal vigilance befitting his part.

"I will not mince words, Kal'tsit. Yes, I did say that I am a Demon Lord at the time."

His affirmation only made the situation more tense, and Kal'tsit's expression darkened. "So, you have confessed, Doctor. Do you have any idea what you have done, and the consequences of proclaiming yourself in such a way?"

"You're asking someone who has no idea what being a Demon Lord actually entails, let alone with no memory, to know the consequences of proclaiming it willy-nilly?"

"No, but I expect you to take responsibility regardless, for you have committed a grave mistake whether it is done out of impulse or not."

"I will, except I have no clue why I have to own up to that in the first place. Why don't you do me a favor and tell me what the hell-"

Sensing the increasing hostilities, Warfarin quickly interjected. "Okay, okay. Calm down you two! Doctor, we're not trying to corner you against the wall here with accusations, we're just trying to make sure that what you're doing is not done intentionally!"

"I don't know about you Warfarin, but Kal'tsit here looks like she wants to tear into me regardless of what happens, and it's lowering my impression of her harder than it already is."

"Okay, look. Why don't I explain in Kal'tsit's stead why your actions have a great underlying importance? Ironic as it seems for me to say this, I don't want to have a bloodbath happen!"

Ironic statement notwithstanding, any argument with Kal'tsit at this point will waste everyone's time, so he decidedly sighed. "...Alright, I'll be counting on you, Warfarin. As long as it's easily understandable."

Ren watched Warfarin looking towards Kal'tsit, and the lynx's expression became a slight calmer as she nodded. The vampire doctor let out a relieved breath. "In that case, I'll be taking over the explanations, Doctor. For the record, your proclamation over in Chernobog as Demon Lord was done completely out of impulse, right?"

"When you're facing an insane kid who revels in sowing chaos and treats Catastrophes as glorified festivals, I pretty much took every chance I can get to tear him down in verbal fashion. The proclamation was also a part of the verbal beatdown, and I apologize if that ends up causing something hugely bad, even if apologies mean nothing in this context."

Warfarin can't help but frown. Truthful he may be, she can't comprehend anyone, much less a kid treating Catastrophes as if it's a good thing. "Okay. You're right that apologies will do nothing at this point, or in this context, Dr. Ren. But at least you're remorseful about it. Anyway, to begin, you've at least read a bit about Sarkaz politics and culture, right?"

"No. Though after this, I plan to read all about the Sarkaz. Politics, culture, witchcraft, the whole shebang."

Seeing Ren become interested in the Sarkaz made Closure and Warfarin smile. Kal'tsit on the other hand thinks that the Doctor took up interest out of necessity. "That's good. In any case, I think we should start with the many sub-races the Sarkaz has."

"Hmhm! Let me tell you, Doctor. There's a lot of Sarkaz sub-races that you should keep an eye out on! The Vampires, the Banshees, the Wendigos, the Cyclopes, the Diabolos, the Nachzehrers, and so much more!"

"Closure's right, Dr. Ren. Each sub-race carries its own culture and Witchcraft, which is entirely different from Originium Arts or Ego Arts, by the way. They're also led by their own individual leaders, such as the Nachzehrer Lord, the Banshee Queen, and from the race of us Vampires, the Sanguinarch."

Ren committed all of this information that the two Vampires provided to memory, making sure to cross-reference it all once it begins reading. "For reference, how strong would the Sanguinarch be in terms of strength?"

The color of the Vampires faces' drained, while Kal'tsit remained silent yet wary. Closure opted to speak in a dire tone. "Ho...Hoo boy. Doctor, if there's anything I can say about him, it's this. If you ever encounter him at one point while he's hungry, which he always is, I want you to run like hell without ever looking back! He'll reduce you to a blood puddle without so much as a finger, and I mean it literally!"

"On top of his unquenchable hunger, he's grown somewhat unhinged because of said hunger. It doesn't matter if you're his fellow Sarkaz or not. If you've gotten on his bad side, you'll be his food without so much as a last thought. So please, listen to Closure, alright?"

"...Noted."

With how serious Closure and Warfarin were, Ren had to gulp a bit at the description of the Sanguinarch's strength. He's had concerns on whether or not a Persona's defenses can protect against Arts, though considering his bout with Talulah, he may well be protected. Being turned into a blood puddle in miliseconds though? With his current Persona strength, he's pretty sure he won't survive in the slightest.

With tension fading in their minds, Warfarin continued. "Anyway, now that we've talked about examples of the rulers of each sub-race, let's move on to the main topic. While each sub-race of Sarkaz have their own respective rulers, all of those rulers inevitably answer to one singular Sarkaz. This Sarkaz in question is the ruler of the whole Sarkaz race."

"Yep, and the one who rules the Sarkaz goes by many titles! The Sarkaz King, the Lord of Fiends... the Demon Lord."

Everyone's eyes turned towards Ren once more. Now armed with the much needed knowledge context, Ren's face immediately grew into a sense of urgency. "So, let me get this straight. So with all this considered, what I did nearly a week ago... I've proclaimed myself as the ruler of an entire race of demons as part of a verbal tear-down?"

Kal'tsit decided to speak up at this very moment. "Yes. Whether this action was done out of impulse, accident, or on purpose, it is altogether a very dangerous action regardless. If you had done this while you're only in the presence of our Rhodes Island operators, you will only be only let off with proper punishment."

The lynx's eyes narrowed sharply afterward, in contrast to Ren's own serious stare. "However, you have also proclaimed this in front of a Reunion contingent. Because of this, no doubt everyone in Reunion now knows of what you have done. Even worse is the presence of Sarkaz mercenaries under Reunion's employ. Your proclamation will inevitably stir their hearts, and spur them to seek the one responsible."

And Ren knows exactly why the mercenaries will do so. W told him already that the ruler of the Sarkaz is dead at this time. He has to remain a fool to the affair, however. "I am going to assume that those Sarkaz are going to hunt me down and kill me for usurping the role?"

"Even worse, Doctor. They'll come for you, and they'll demand that you show them proof that you are worthy of becoming their next Sarkaz King. You may not know this, but the previous one has died from unforeseen circumstances. Any proclamation coming from anyone is practically going to make lots of huge waves in the Sarkaz community!"

Ren fell into silence, trying to process everything he just heard. He's already known about the previous Sarkaz King being dead, and his hypothesis falls into Shadow killing her, though it is unproven. It left Warfarin's words as news that went old quickly. The reaction of the Sarkaz is also expectedly understandable. After all, their previous ruler is dead, and anyone trying to claim the throne is going to be in the headlights of all Sarkaz imaginable, especially if he or she has the skills to back him up.

Still, he can't help but think hard on the responsibilities he now has to shoulder as a result of his impulses. Leading a ragtag group of thieves? He's pretty much a master of it. Leading groups of people aiding his escape? He may have only done it once back at Chernobog, but he's sure experience will temper him. Leading an entire race of demons with all of its variety? He may have killed God twice, but experience alone won't be enough in this matter. He's going to need help, and even then, this is still too early in the game, and he's not in the mood to be a Lord anytime soon.

"...If I am going to be honest, if there's any way I can cancel my proclamation outright back at the day I woke up, I'm going to gladly take it with no questions asked. It's clear that I've done something that I clearly have no business in partaking, or even signed up for."

"So, that is what you will do then, Dr. Ren? To run away from your responsibilities even when the damage has already been done?"

Ren shook his head with conviction. "No. If anything, the proper way to do this is to take responsibility for my own actions, whether it be accidental or not and if possible, rectify the mistakes I've made as best as I can. After all, isn't that what a Demon Lord is supposed to do? To own up for their own actions and ensure their subjects also do the same with their own deeds?"

The Sarkaz in the room grew curious and interested, with Closure speaking up. "Uh... Mind explaining, Dr. Ren? I get and approve of your responsible side, but after that? Feels as if you need to say more to make a point."

Ren can't help but think deeply on the matter. Over the course of his life, he has become acquainted, and learned of the many Demon Lords of his world's mythology. Belial who reigns over the fires of hell as its duke. Nebiros, the forefather of necromancy that gave rise to many undead. Even the archetypal Satan and Lucifer, who are the demons to rule all demons. All of them carry semblances on how Demon Lords should be. But to him, in the long run as altogether, what constitutes one to be worthy as a Demon Lord? To rule over demonkind as a whole with his human experience?

While all of the demonic Personas he had in the past gave him knowledge of lordship, all of it eventually boiled down to what he knew of his true Persona, Arsene. Or rather, his ascended form, the Gnostic variation of the Lord of Hell, Satanael. Being a divine angel that fell into grace to rebel against Yaldabaoth's controlling reign, many angels who also grew displeased from the false god's rule fell as well, following his example. Their victory at the end allowed Satanael to grant humanity the power of free will, to shape their own destiny, the power of chaos under order. He too had fought for freedom under the law as a Phantom Thief, and it stayed true as a core principle to this day, to act upon free will while remaining cognizant of his own sense of responsibility.

...Yes, to Ren, that is how a Demon Lord should rule, no matter what world.

"Let me say this Closure. I believe that to be a Demon Lord, they must not strip away their subject's right of free will under their rule. Imagine if you're only allowed to do anything your ruler tells you to, without protest. How would you react?"

Closure immediately shook her head in protest. "Oh no, no no. You're not going to see me obeying them commands if I can't live my life running my shop and being an engineering junkie, ever! Even if that person is my lord or ruler or whatever!"

"I don't think I'll be obeying my ruler's commands if my free will gets stripped away like that. Still, if there's nothing we can do about it other than obey, then..."

Hearing of the Vampires' answers, Kal'tsit hurled a question back. "Why are you questioning them this, Doctor? What are you trying to imply?"

"What I am trying to say, Kal'tsit, is that if a Demon Lord, much less any lord, would dare to take away their subject's free will, their freedom, then they have no right to be a Demon Lord in the first place. And if the Demon Lord in question is not even a Lord by status, they must be able to lead by example. Like my question earlier that I made towards Closure. One may say that just obeying is perfectly fine, but what of your own life?"

Ren's eyes narrowed at Kal'tsit before continuing. "Any person who values their free will will have the guts to rebel against their ruler even if it means their lives are forfeit, and I believe that all Sarkaz will value their free will immensely. And that brings us to my second point. A Demon Lord must be able to set an example to their people, to rule not with words but with actions, to inspire their people to do what they believe is right what they want to do. What worth is there anyway in a ruler if they just sit on their high thrones barking orders when they end up being useless by doing ultimately nothing?"

Closure and Warfarin were moved into stillness, wide-eyed by the Doctor's calm, yet rousing words. Kal'tsit too remained silent as she processed his words that were borderline of a speech. While she'd prefer to take a calmer approach instead of outright frontal rebellion, she had to agree that any ruler, much less a Demon Lord, that takes away the freedom of the Sarkaz would be a faulty lord that must be deposed. She can even barely remember the many leaders in her lifetime who share such an oppressive category. While some of them had karmic fates fall upon them, there are some who managed to get away with such ways, the past Ursus Emperors coming to mind.

The thought of ruling with actions more than words is also a sound statement, for a ruler that can only command from the throne can only do so much. A nation ruled by a leader driven by actions shows far more promise for its people, and people will learn more from their examples. Of course, it entirely depends on the ruler itself, if they were just or corrupt.

Still, with all his words in mind, Kal'tsit can't help but feel but question one thing. "Your words and arguments all fall within reason, Doctor. However, with all your words emphasizing the notions of freedom and rebellion against oppression, I can only ask this. Are you by all accounts, truly ready to lead using those words to guide us as an example?"

What greeted Kal'tsit afterwards is nod, along with a smile brimming with confidence. "I'm practically more than ready to lead. Not as the Demon Lord of all Sarkaz, but at least as the tactical commander and Doctor of Rhodes Island. Everyone is free to exercise their freedom, but they must also remember the responsibilities they carry with that freedom. Even the Demon Lord is not exempt from such a rule."

Ren looked at both Closure and Warfarin at his sides, who are now in full attention to him, then at Kal'tsit at the front, who stared at him intently. "However, should a Sarkaz be willing to entrust their lives to their Lord much like how my Operators trust me with their lives, then I have to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of them as well. If they're willing to trust me, then I have to trust them with my life as well. Have I made myself clear?"

Kal'tsit at that moment felt the need to rethink her words. Rebellion was not one of the aspects that the Doctor wanted to emphasize when he also makes a point on how a leader must be able to shoulder the responsibilities given by others and placing trust in them. Rather, instead of rebellion, he wanted to emphasize the aspect of seeking justice. Dr. Ren did indeed use rebelling against rulers for an example, but he made a point to reference corrupt rulers when stating it. Plus, no irresponsible rebel would keep them principled on trust and responsibilty.

In the end, the Doctor had made his whole stance clear on what he has done both in regards to Persona and his claim as the Demon Lord of all Sarkaz, as well as having reported his own end with his own plan to win the L.G.D's favor on equal grounds. With the conflict on whether this man would besmirch her dear friend's memory now answered and other issues resolved, she found no need to keep him in this meeting any longer.

"Yes. With everything that you have provided for us, I believe that now is the proper time to have this meeting adjourned. Does everyone agree on this?"

Closure answered first, though with slight stutter. "Uhh.. Yeah, yeah! I'd say this meeting is as good as done!"

Warfarin recovered quicker somewhat. "...I am of the same mind as well. We highly appreciate your cooperation in this, Dr. Ren."

Ren nodded in response. "Likewise. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get some rest at the Convalescence Garden, thank you very much."

"Very well. Be advised however, that you still have your duties as HR Director to attend to, Dr. Ren. Keep that in mind."

A sigh escaped the man's lips. "If you say so, Kal'tsit. If you'll excuse me."

Ren promptly stood up, stretching his arms and legs for a bit before letting out a yawn, leaving the meeting room afterward. The others however remained inside, their thoughts practically filled with what they had learned, and Ren's own brand of speech on how a Demon Lord should be. Closure and Warfarin even found themselves a bit shaken.

"H...Holy shit. This is the first time I've ever heard Ren made speeches like that directly, amnesia notwithstanding and... I'm blown. I'm just blown!"

"I-I feel the same. His passion when he declared on how a Sarkaz King should act is truly something. Almost as if he's addressing the people if he actually becomes one. What do you think, Kal'tsit?"

"...I must admit that I too didn't expect him to deliver his words with utmost spirit. For one who admits that his proclamation was done in an impulsive mistake, the conviction and confidence he displayed earlier are akin to someone who has a rightful claim to the throne as an outsider."

Warfarin looked at Kal'tsit with serious curiosity. "This might be presumptuous of me to assume, Dr. Kal'tsit, and I hope I'm wrong, but... do you think that the Doctor may very well be the next Sarkaz King?"

Kal'tsit shook her head immediately. "No. Despite what we've seen and what we have heard of him, his amnesia bars him from any potential of becoming her next successor. I doubt the Royal Court would even consider inducting him into the status of a candidate regardless."

If anything, what has transpired today left her somewhat at a loss. Kal'tsit can attribute the Doctor's new personality to his amnesia, but it eventually left her thinking on his words earlier. How he was so confident and sure of his beliefs, and the conviction of every word he uttered on how a Demon Lord should be. He will never be one, but as of now, the lynx can only conclude that his new mental state has made him grown into a far better leader than his former cold and calculating self.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that the Sarkaz mercenaries under Reunion also know of this development. Whether news of this will reach the ears of the Regent of Kazdel is all but unknown to her, but gods forbid he'll try to come for the Doctor with full force. It will only end in dsaster.

"For now, it is best that we return to our respective duties and clear our thoughts as to what has transpired today."

Both Vampires agreed to Kal'tsit's suggestion, and soon the three of them dispersed, all to handle their respective work agenda, all with the Doctor's words etched in their minds and their various thoughts surrounding it.

HEAVY Patchworking! (Involves the Story Premises and All!)

- An extra reason for Philemon to send Ren into Terra in the Prologue (And in turn changing the whole premise)

- Slight change in dialogue between Ren and Shadow in 1-5 to reflect the changes in the Prologue

- 2-2 being entirely removed, with 2-1 absorbing half of 2-1. (2-3 will be the new 2-2, and so on!)

- A different introduction to Persona from Philemon to the Terrans in CSF-1!

- An entirely new discussion between Philemon and Kal'tsit regarding Persona and the former's goals in 2-5 (Now 2-4)

- Reworked some of Kal'tsit's dialogue in past chapters, mostly 2-5 to make her more... Kal'tsit. St. Carmen and High Inquisitor Dario are right. Kal'tsit being analytically long-winded is a pain in the ass.

It honestly sucks that whenever Arknights gets more lore into the game, I get screwed over with each iteration.

Also, this is now the longest chapter I've ever written. Damn.

4 months since my last chapter! Not as much improvement of speed compared to my last chapter update, but it's still 33% faster! I'll take it! I have a lot of things I wanna address first, so I'll go over it one by one.

The Plagiarizer

If you're one of the folks that frequent the Arknights X Persona side of the of the Crossover section, then I'm sure you've read Wordbound's AN which has addressed the same issue. To give my two cents, I hold no love for any plagiarizer that attempts to steal the hard work of others for their own gain. If anything, they'll only get into trouble doing so. I'm not going to mention names since this person is not even worth the attention. But if your curiosity has gotten to you, you may PM me about it. What's important is that I ain't going to involve myself in this nonsense. Whether you choose to involve yourself or stay out of it, it is out of your own free will to choose, and I can only accept your choices.

Just don't even attempt to do some plagiarizing yourself. You'll screw yourself over hard both in long and short term. It's common sense!

Lore & Progress

The story of Arknights is extensive and very informative. As someone who grew invested in the lore, I've always enjoyed reading every new story that pops up. However, some stories that have been presented have actually caused some setbacks in regard to my writing.

To explain, this whole story is written while following canon closely while not entirely to the letter. If I wrote my fan fiction while strictly following canon only, then I feel that there's little point in writing this in the first place, plus it'll look entirely boorish. Then again, that's the whole purpose of fan fictions, is it not?

The problem is that due to me closely following Arknights canon to make my own deviations later on like what you've seen in Chapter 2, there's the risk that each new story that drops has the potential to screw me over and force me to make some changes. The most brutal happens to be the ones that surfaced that implied the nature of Terra from Kal'tsit's research, which made me have to add another reason on top of Philemon's initial reason just so the premise won't fall down the seams. If canon actually told us that Terra is exactly what it was in that one video detailing Kal's report on Terra, then the world is far more dangerous than we thought. I know some people have said that it's fine to keep it as is, but after much consultation, change was needed, and I hope you can understand that.

Still, I'll be damned if I'll let this stop me. Like I said in a previous Author's Note, the day I stop writing this is the day I die. I chooseth this fate of mine own will, and I will continue on. After all, I'm eager to see what I can do to change up Arknights canon, as stringent as it may be.

Arknights So Far

Ever since the previous chapter, I've gotten quite a few notable ops. Fiammetta and Lee, as well as Irene. Luckily enough, I managed to get both Ling and Unchained Specter, luckily enough! I've also managed to watch Ambience Synesthesia, and it was truly an exhilarating performance with the new pieces like Dreamland and the Agents, especially the Agents! I've always been a sucker for 3D clips like that!

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the chance to watch the Arknights anime. Only through summaries and clips off of Youtube. Still, I can safely say that the anime is in good hands, and Ace will be remembered as the chad he is, for Doctors both old and new.

Well, that's all I'll have to say so far! I'll be updating the changed chapters after this, and for old returning readers, you may want to see the changes I made in the Patchworks! As for new readers, you can just ignore the Patchworks! In the next Chapter, we might see some new faces and the next step of the plan is a mystery for all. After declaring his vision of being a Demon Lord twice, perhaps he'll come to something he may not expect.

That's all for me! And remember, even in the face of hardship...

Take your time.
