Chapter 14: How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters Part 1

Lilydale, NY

It was just another boring day at my café, until I saw him. The one person I never expected to see walking into my café. I was pouring coffee to one of my customers, nearly spilling the liquid onto the table's surface, when the guy yelped a hey at me. I quickly took out my cloth from my apron and wiped it down. It's not every day you see a pro-candidate like the name of Dick Roman waltz through your café like you owned the place. He was quite handsome, tall, masculine, the whole nine yards. He definitely had the "it" factor.

And guess what? He was being seated into my section! I internally screamed and wanted to cry. His crisp suit made him look quite dapper in my eyes. He was everything a girl could ask for in a man. Of course I had heard about him before. He was all over the news and the recent Forbes magazine as one of the top 50 most influential people.

"Oh my Lord, girl," my co-worker Brent said to me. I smirked at him and nodded.

"I know, I know," I waved him off as he nudged me with a wide smile on his face. He was always getting me to hook up with someone that came into this café.

I took a deep breath, hoping to calm down my nervous nerves as they pricked all over my skin. I walked over towards his booth. He was reading the menu.

"Hi, my name is Kaylee, I'll be your server today. What can I get you to drink?" I asked, with my note pad and pen out ready to jot down his order.

"I'll have a coffee, black, please," he said. He looked up at me and then around the room of the café. "I notice you don't have the famous Turducken your menu."

"Uh, no sorry we do not," I said, trying not to stumble on my words in front of him. "I can get my manager if you'd like to speak to him?"

"Yes, that would be fantastic, as I think every café and restaurant should have it on their menu as a limited time offer," he said, giving me a smile of his pearly whites.

"Of course," I said. "With that coffee can I get you something to eat as well?"

"Just coffee for now, then maybe something later," he said, setting the menu aside.

I nodded. "No problem. One black coffee coming right up."

"Thank you darlin'," he said.

I went to get his coffee and to speak to my manager about Dick Roman being here and wanting to sell his own sandwich to us.

I grabbed a mug and the coffee pot and brought it over to his table just as he finished speaking with my manager. I filled his cup almost to the rim. "That is great," he said, stopping me from filling it. "You know what else would be great if I can have your number?"

My face turned pink. "Pardon me?"

"You seem very nice and kind. I haven't met many kind women on my trip. So, I'd like to ask you to dinner. I know a great little restaurant in New Jersey. I'd like to bring you tonight," he said.

I bit my lower lip, unsure of the sudden offer he had for me.

"She'd love to go!" my co-worker Brent blurted out, who was behind me. I scolded him with a sour look on my face.

"Great, then it's settled. I'll pick you up here at 7," he said.

I gulped. "Right, sure, seven," I said.

I grabbed Brent's shirt and brought him over to our work station. "What the hell?" I demanded him. I haven't been on a date since Sam left my life.

"He's totally perfect! He has it all, Kay, I don't know why you're resistant!"

"It's just…."

"Don't tell me, Sam? Honey, it's been forever since he's spoken to you. Don't you think you can move on?" He asked me.

I sighed. Truth was, I didn't want to move on from Sam, but at the same time, maybe it couldn't hurt that I went out and lived a little? Maybe Brent was right, maybe this could be good for me. A fresh start.
