Chapter 23: We need to talk about Kevin Part 2
Rufus's Cabin.
It was late at night by the time we got there. I was hungry, tired, and thirsty. Dean finally got a hold of Sam so we were going to meet here. All of my old stuff was back in London and I'm sure with me gone it was long gone by now. I spent a year in purgatory after all. I was grateful I wasn't alone and Dean was right beside me, teaching me how to fight, teaching me to survive a monstrous world of souls that wanted us dead. All I kept thinking about was getting home to Sam. Dean really stepped up and helped me back there. He was there for me when no one else was. I had my manic panic attack and he calmed me down.
We saw the impala pull up to the cabin. Sam got out.
We walked inside the cabin, ready for him.
Dean suddenly pushed him to the ground and threw holy water on him. I gasped a bit in shock.
"What the…I'm not a demon!" Sam exclaimed.
Dean grabbed the borax and poured it on him. "Or a Leviathan. What-" Dean grabbed his arm and cut it open. "Or a shapeshifter. Good!" He stood up. "My turn. Come on let's go,"
Dean pushed the borax towards him.
"I don't need to. I know it's you," Sam said.
"Damn it, Sammy!" he threw the borax all over him. "Come on!"
"No," Sam was adamant. "Dean, can't I just say hello?"
Dean rolled up his sleeve and cut open his arm. "Kaylee just like we talked about."
"Yep," I said already rolling up my sleeve. I took out my own knife but Sam protested.
"Whoa, whoa, no. It's fine. Kaylee stop. You're good too. Come on now I've known you for what like… eight years?"
"It's been that long?" I asked in a daze.
"Mhmm," he nodded. "Just about. Well, I don't know whether to give you a hug or a shower."
Dean and I looked at each other and we laughed. Dean was first. He held out his arms. "Come here." They hugged tightly.
Then Sam and I hugged tight too.
"Dude, you guys are freakin' alive," Sam said, pulling apart. He placed his hands in his hair. "I mean, what the hell happened?"
"Well, I guess standing too close to exploding Dick sends your ass straight to Purgatory," Dean said.
"You were in Purgatory? For a whole year?"
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Yeah, time flies when you're running for your life," Dean added.
"Well, how'd you two get out?" Sam asked.
"I guess whoever built that box didn't want us in there anymore than we did."
"What does that mean?" Sam asked.
"We're here, okay?" Dean asked.
"What about Cas?" Sam asked. "Was he there?"
Dean took a few steps back form us.
"Yeah. Cas didn't make it," Dean said sadly. I was also sad by this. I'd wanted the angel out, but I also knew what happened. I was there and saw it happen right before my very eyes.
"What exactly does that mean?" Sam wondered out loud.
"Something happened to him down there. Things got pretty hairy towards the end, and he just….let go," Dean exclaimed.
"So Cas is Dead? You saw him die?" Sam asked and looked at me then I turned away and he looked to Dean.
"I saw enough."
"So, then what, you're not sure?" Sam asked.
"I said I saw enough, Sam," Dean turned back to face him.
"Right. Dean, I'm sorry," Sam said apologetically.
"Me too. So you… I can't believe you're actually here," Dean said. He walked to the fridge and took out three bottles. Two bottles were beer the other was root beer.
"Your favorite," Dean said to me.
"Thanks," I smiled as he popped it open for me.
"You know that half your numbers are out of service? Felt like I was leaving messages in the wind," he sat down at the table and set a beer for Sam. I sat down beside him. Sam still stood.
"Yeah, I-I didn't get your messages," Sam said. I was curious about this also.
"How come?" Dean asked.
"Probably because I ditched the phones."
"Beacause….?"
I frowned. Why?
"I guess, um, I guess something happened to me this year, too," he shrugged. "I don't hunt anymore."
"Yeah. And Sasha Grey's gone legit," Dean said.
Sam exhaled.
"What?" Dean asked.
"Nothing. Um, she did a Soderbergh movie."
"What?"
"She did a Soder-"
"No. You Sam. You quit?" Dean asked.
"Why?" I asked.
"Yeah, Yeah I-you were gone…Dean. Kaylee was gone. Cas was gone. Bobby was dead. I mean, Crowley even shipped off Keven and Meg to parts unknown."
"So you just turned tall on the family business?" Dean asked.
"Nothing says 'family' quite like the whole family being dead," Sam regarded.
"I wasn't dead," he stood up and walked around. "Kaylee wasn't dead. In fact, we were knee-deep in God's armpit killing monsters, which, I thought is what we actually do."
"Yes, Dean. And far as I knew, what we do is the thing that got every single member of my family killed. I had no one-no one. And for the first time in my life, I was completely alone. And honestly I-I didn't exactly have a roadmap. So, yeah, I-I fixed up the impala, and I just drove."
"After you looked for us," Dean said. Sam remained silent. "Did you look for us?" Sam looked away. "Good. That's good. Now we-we always told each other not to look for each other. That's smart. Good for you. Of course ,we always ignored that because of our deep, abiding love for each other, but not this time, right Sammy?"
"Look, I'm still the same guy, Dean," Sam said.
I was trying not to cry. Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry.
"Well, bully for you, I'm not, and neither is Kaylee," Dean said with a motion nod of his head towards her.
I gulped. "Please don't bring me into this," I pleaded.
"Sorry kiddo, too late," Dean said, patting my shoulder. He got up and walked away.
"Should I ask what happened to you during our year in Purgatory?" I asked.
"I was going to ask you the same thing," Sam said.
"You met someone," I guessed using my psychic ability on him. I couldn't help it at that point. The suspense was killing me.
"Yes," Sam said.
"Right. Cause it's not like we were dating..." I said.
I shook my head and got up as well leaving him.
"Wait, just let me explain...welcome back," I heard Sam say as I headed to my room.
