The Land before Billy (Part 2)
A dinosaur! Ford's hands were shaking as he looked at the picture the camera had captured moments ago.
"I can't believe this! An actual dinosaur?" Fids was going crazy, the group was heading back to the Shack for more supplies. "This is so exciting, can you imagine it a dinosaur, in our time."
"I know." Heather said. "But how is it possible that it survived 65 million years?"
"Not sure, what do you think Ford?" Fids asked. "Ford?"
Ford wanted to be just as excited as his friends, he really did, but something kept nagging at him.
Suddenly he hears a scream, it's Stan he's screaming something as he runs towards him.
"Get down!" Stan tackles his brother as the best swoops down towards him.
"Dude!" Heather thumbles with her camera, but she froze as she sees what the dinosaur is carrying. "Ford it has Gompers!"
Ford's blood runs cold as he realizes what had been bothering him.
"The dinosaur, it must be why Gompers has been freaking out lately." Fids explained before he could.
"We have save him!" Ford pushes his brother off, but the tree line causes him to lose sight of the Beast. "No!" Ford falls on his knees.
"Bro, I'm so sorry." Stan said as Susan came running over with Cooper and Buddy.
"Ford I'm sorry." Susan was in tears. "I should have come outside with Stan."
"What…what happened?" Ford struggled with words as anger took over him. "You were supposed to be watching him!" He gets up in his brother's face, fuming.
"He had an accident inside." Stan explained. "We came out together he seemed fine, relaxed even, then the thing just-grabbed him." Okay so he left out the part about him going inside, but seriously, it was a dinosaur! What could he have done?
"Kids I found it!" Mabel comes running out with what looks like a baby carrier. "Gompers will feel much safer in…" She stops seeing the tears streaming down Ford's face. "What happened?"
"A dinosaur took Gompers!" Ford screamed showing his aunt the picture.
"A dinosaur?" Mabel looks stunned. "Well it sure looks like one…oh Ford I'm sorry, I'm sure Stan and Sue did everything they could to keep Gompers safe."
"We are really sorry." Susan cried.
Heather places a hand on his shoulder. "There's nothing they could have done, it's a flying dinosaur." She reasoned.
"Pterodactyl." Fids corrected her. "Not that it matters…" He added when heather gave him a warning look.
"I know…" Ford deflates as the anger leaves him.
"Maybe we can still save him!" Bud suggested.
"It's too late, they're gone, and we have no way to track him." Ford cried.
"Maybe we do." Mabel said as she notices Waddles running around, he kept stopping to sniff the air.
"What is he doing?" Cooper asked.
"Oh Waddles is a special pig sport." Mabel explained. "You see he comes from a long line of hunting Pigs."
"Pig can hunt?" Heather asked.
"Oh yes, some hunters bred pig instead of blood hounds, on the account that they can pick up a sent from pretty much nothing." Mabel explained. "Waddles, go find your kid." She ordered.
Waddles takes a few more sniffs and then squeals; charging off into the woods.
"Follow that pig!" Mabel demands.
"For Gompers!" Ford decreed as he led the charge, it was long run, a lot longer than any of them had been prepared for but finally they came upon an abandoned church.
Waddle stops and squeals again, trotting his foot.
"Gompers must be in there." Mabel said. "Good work Waddles."
Ford hugs Waddles. "Thanks bud, I'm sorry I thought you were a bad influence before."
Waddles oinks as the group looks up at the wrecked building.
"Seems like a perfect nesting ground for a pterodactyl." Fids said.
"Okay kids if we do this, we do it smart." Mabel warned.
The kids nodded and walked into the church slowly only to stop as they noticed someone was already there.
"Chu?" Mabel looks stunned to see her. "What are you doing here?"
Crazy Chu points at a large hole in the floor. She was unusually serious, and less crazy than usual. "I was polishing my musical spoons when it came." She spoke gravely. "I followed it and it flew into the abandoned mines down yonder."
Everyone looked down where she was pointing.
"Looks kind of hairy down there," Mabel said. "I'm not sure this is safe."
"It's Gompers Grauntie Mabel." Ford said. "I'd do anything for him."
"I know, and if it was one of you kids I would too." Mabel admitted. "But it may already be too late."
"I know." Ford said. "But I have to try."
"Don't worry, I have a weapon!" Crazy Chu holds up an axe.
"Great, crazy lady with an axe." Cooper said.
"That's not concerning at all." Bud agreed.
"She's not crazy." Mabel hissed. "Poor girl is just confused." She gives a guilty look at that, but shakes it off. "Okay Chu, you and Waddles lead the way, you kids stay close."
Everyone nodded and with the help of a nearby rope they were able to start climbing down. Suddenly the rope started to fray and it broke, dropping everyone into the mines.
"Woah," Ford said, looking around. The others looked up and gasped in amazement.
"These plants look all Jurassic-y." Heather said.
"Huh, this little guy smells like battery acid," Fids said, pointing to a plant.
Chu bends down to sniff it and the plant spat out a cloud of acid in her face. "AH! Well, looks like I lost my sense of smell, haha!"
Stan sighs as he looks down at the picture he and Susan took with Gompers.
"We'll find him." Susan says as she came up beside him.
"I hope so, I'll never forgive myself." Stan admitted.
"It's okay, no one blames you." Bud said. "Ford knows you did everything you could."
But that it, Stan hadn't done everything, he had left Gompers alone and sooner or later he's have to tell Ford the truth. Either that or let the guilt eat him alive, which was already proving to be more than he could handle.
The group walked into a tunnel, it was dark, but Chu had also brought a lantern which lit up a giant T-rex. The group screamed, but calmed down when the realized that the dinosaur was trapped in sap.
"They're trapped inside the tree sap!" Ford said. "That's how they survived 65 million years! Woah..." He looked at a giant pterodactyl-shaped hole in the sap. "The summer heat must be melting them loose."
"That makes since." Heather said. "Remember the heat index had reached a record breaking high right when the pool was opened."
"Well the good news is we found an awesome project." Fids pointed out.
Heather glares at him again.
"Right sorry, bad timing." Fids said.
"Forget the science fair." Stan said. "This place is the attraction of a life time! We could bring people down here and turn this into some sort of theme park! Jurassic... Sap Hole!"
"Did you learn nothing from the movies?" Cooper asked.
Fids gasped. "You watched Jurassic Park!"
"Nerd." Stan teased.
"Uh, guys?" Ford said nervously. He pointed to a velociraptor that had one finger free of the sap.
"Uh, maybe we should keep moving," Heather suggested.
"You know what bugs me?" Cooper said as they kept moving.
"What?" Stan asked.
"Why Gompers?" Cooper asked.
"It was hungry?" Stan said.
"No I mean you're bigger, but still light enough to carry." Cooper pointed out. "Why choose the smaller meal?"
"It wouldn't." Ford stops, as it clicked. "Not unless Gompers was outside by himself!"
Stan flinched. "Okay look I know what you're thinking…" He started.
"You left Gompers outside then you lied to me about it!" Ford yelled. "And now thanks to you, our goat could be dead! Gompers could be dead!"
"Stanley…" Mabel was stunned and Susan was in tears.
"How could you?"
"Look I was hungry, He see med fine, and I was watching him through the window." Stan argued.
"And if you had been with him we wouldn't be in this mess!" Ford pushed him, hard.
"Ford!" Mabel yelled. "I know you're angry but you do not push your brother."
"What brother?" Ford snapped. "All I see is a traitor."
"Look, you can't be serious-" Stan began.
"Oh, is someone talking?" Ford interrupted. "Because I can't hear them!"
Stan looks to Susan. "Sue…"
Susan turned away falling into Heather's arms. "I can't believe you would do this to me, I really thought it was my fault. You let me think that!"
"Guys we can't fight now. Gompers needs us." Fids reminded them.
The others stared in horror. The pterodactyl was right above Fids. They all screamed.
"What- what's wrong?!" Fids cried. He turned around to see the dinosaur.
"Nobody move," Ford whispered.
Everyone obeyed, all but Chu who screamed and ran the other way. The pterodactyl shrieked and charged. Ford and the others ran down a tunnel. Thankfully the beast got stuck in a doorway, allowing them to hide behind some rocks.
"We need a plan to get out of here," Ford whispered.
"Ok, ok, how about we get Fids a goat costume," Bud began.
"I like it," Fids said.
"And then we use Fids as a human sacrifice," Cooper finished.
"Okay I change my mind." Fids said. "I don't mind being bait, but I will not get eaten on purpose."
"We could charge in at once." Stan suggested.
Everyone ignored him.
"Aw, come on guys. You can't seriously stop talking to me forever." Stan said.
Fids sighed, "He's right, we have to work together here."
"He lied to us." Susan said, offended.
"BAAAAAH!"
"Wait, did you hear that?" Stan asked.
Everyone peaked around the rock to see Gompers sitting in a nest.
"GOMPERS!" Ford was so excited he ran over to him without thinking.
"Ford!" Fids cried.
"Are you nuts?!" Stan yelled.
"Oh, is someone talking?!" Ford covered his ears. "Because I can't hear anything!" he continues running towards the nest. The others follow him, hoping their numbers will keep them safe.
"Ford sweetie please." Mabel begged. "This isn't safe."
Ford reaches the nest and climbs in. "Gompers!" The goat bleated as Ford picked him up. "Oh I'll never lose you again! I promise."
Waddles joins them, and nuzzles the baby goat.
Ford sniffles. "Thanks Waddles, you found him."
Fids looks inside the nest. "Uh...Ford?" there was human bones by Ford's feet along with a huge egg.
"Here use this and let's go." Mabel passes Ford the baby carrier and Ford slipped Gompers inside.
A huge shadow passed overhead and Gompers bleated in utter terror. He ran off towards the mine track.
"Gompers, wait!" Ford cried as he takes off after him.
Waddles races after the kid determined to keep the baby goat insight this time around.
"Sixer!" Stan races after his brother and manages to catch up. "I got him." He says and tackles the goat.
"Gompers!" Ford runs up to them and sighs in relief as Stan fastens the baby carrier around him, with Gompers close to his chest.
Waddles stands by Stan aggressively stamping his hooves, he's waiting for the danger, thy all know is coming.
"Look out!" Fids shouted. The pterodactyl swooped down suddenly and knocked Stan and Gompers off the track. They screamed, falling to the floor far below.
"Oh no Stanley!" Ford shouts.
The others who are still in the nest huddle at the back of it as the beast flies around them.
"Ms. Pines!" Heather said. "What do we do?"
Mabel looks around, if she moved the monster would go to the nest, and protect her home. If she didn't the beast would no doubt go after Stan. She didn't know what to do, either way, the kids would be in danger. Unfortunately Stan's scream makes the decision for them.
He bounced off a giant mushroom and landed in a gathering of plants. Luckily he landed on his back and not on Gompers. The kid eats some of the longer plants happily before Stan gets to his feet only to duck down as the pterodactyl swooped.
"Stanley!" Ford yelled he was hiding out of the monsters view, behind a pillar. "Hide, get out of the line of sight!"
The flying dinosaur flew by the nest once more, Mabel and the kids gasped in fear.
"Guys, we have to save them!" Bud said.
"No offense but we need to save ourselves first!" Cooper said as the egg in the middle of the nest cracked. The egg fell over onto its side as a baby pterodactyl broke through. It looked at the intruders and makes a small sound.
"What do we do, what do we do?" Bud panicked.
Fids thought for a minute. "We have to get in a straight line," he said.
"What?" Cooper gives him a look.
"A pterodactyl's eyes are so far apart, that if you stand right in front of it, it can't see you," Fids explained.
It sounded like a long shot but they really didn't have another choice.
"Worth a shot." Heather shrugged.
"Get behind me, Kids," Mabel ordered. They obeyed and they scooted around the pterodactyl slowly. Cooper couldn't believe it, it was actually working! When it looked at them, they stopped, but thankfully the dinosaur couldn't see them.
"It's working!" Susan whispered as they began to cross the mine track. They jumped from side to side when the pterodactyl turned its head. But it made no advances, finally Mabel and the kids made it back behind the rocks.
"Not bad nerd." Cooper praised.
"Good thinking kido." Mabel agreed.
Fids smiled. "It pays to be smart."
Meanwhile Stan and Gompers managed to hide under a giant mushroom. Still the pterodactyl flew over them refusing to give up the search.
"It must be hungry." Stan said. "What do we do?" He asked Gompers.
Gompers wines softly, and tries to wrestle free.
Stan sighs. "I know you're scared, and I'm sorry I left you last time. But I won't do it again…I promise."
Gompers whines louder, Stan looks up, noticing the dinosaur flying towards them.
He pulls out his brass knuckles. "I promise." He vowed turning the bundle around so Gompers was on his back. He stands ready. "YOU WANT THIS GOAT?! THEN YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO GET THROUGH ME, YOU FLYING DEVIL!" He screamed and charged before jumping onto the pterodactyl.
Everyone looked up at the sudden screech of a full-grown pterodactyl and what they saw was the most amazing thing ever. Stan was on the pterodactyl back and as it flew around he punched it in the face with his brass knuckles.
"No way…" Cooper said.
"Is that-?" Ford looked up at his brother in disbelief.
"Stan?!" Susan beamed. They watched as he continued to punch the dinosaur in the face before noticing Gompers strapped to his back.
"Gompers!" They cried happily.
Ford laugh, they were both okay!
Stan gave one last punch at the pterodactyl with both hands. It screeched, diving towards the edge of the cliff.
"Stanley!" Ford races out of his hiding spot as his brother lands on the cliff edge.
Everyone cheered.
"Gompers!" Ford took the goat out of the bundle. "You're safe!"
"You saved him." Susan embraced him as the others ran over. "That was so brave."
"And dangerous." Mabel began to lecture. "I know you kids want this to be your project, and it's a great discovery and all but-LOOK OUT!"
Suddenly the pterodactyl recovered and flew after them, snapping at Ford's jacket.
"Faster!" Buddy urged. They reached the rope that lead out, but the snapped end was too high to reach.
"We're trapped!" Mabel cried.
Suddenly not too far away the geyser shoot a rock out of the mine.
"Quick! The geyser it can shoot us back up!" Ford pointed. They climbed into the water. The pterodactyl was gaining on them, but the geyser didn't shoot. "Come on, go!"
The pterodactyl roared at them, and everyone screams
Water shoots upward, lifting the group back up into the church before crashing back down causing the building to collapse, covering the hole.
The group breathed heavily, they had barely made it out in time.
"I don't care if the science fair prize is a life time supply of yarn." Mabel gasped. "No one is going back down there."
"Agreed." Everyone said in unison.
"I still can't believe you fought a pterodactyl." Susan said. "That was crazy brave."
"Yeah it was." Stan admitted. "I'm sorry I made you feel like this was your fault." He admitted.
"And I'm sorry I put so much blame on you." Susan admitted. "You're just a kids like me, it's not like I actually thought you could fight the thing."
Stan catches his brother's eye and tries a wave.
Ford smiles and stops allowing him to catch up. "Stanley I…"
Stan sighed. "Look bro I know I let you down." He admitted.
"You did." Ford agreed. "But you did save him, you've always got my back when it counts and I couldn't ask for any better."
"I can do better." Stan said. "I will."
Ford smiled and let Gompers jumped down to join Waddles. The two seemed very happy to be reunited.
"I guess Waddles isn't as bad at babysitting as I thought." Susan admitted.
"Yeah he's pretty great." Ford agreed.
"So I guess a perpetual motion machine is the winning project." Fids cut in.
"It is this year." Ford said proudly.
"Nerds." Cooper teased.
"Said the guy who watched Jurassic Park." Heather teased.
"Nerd!" Ford and Stan said together.
The friends laughed as the sun set behind them on another adventure filled day.
