Chapter 6

"Mom", Alex says, in surprise, slightly disheveled as she opens the front door, "I thought we were picking you up".

"I just got an uber here", Eliza waves her off, "better than you having to drive all the way across town especially if you're running late like normal".

Alex stands in the doorway watching as Eliza walks through, shaking herself and following, "Well, yeah, that works too, I guess. Sam and Ruby are both upstairs still getting ready", she says, hurrying to the kitchen, "you want something to eat or drink or…".

"Sweetheart, relax", Eliza says, reaching for Alex's hand to stop her, "We're going for brunch, I'll eat there. I'm ok for now".

"Right, right", Alex says, taking a deep breath, "I'm going to go check on them". As soon as Eliza nods, Alex is bounding up the stairs.

"Was that your mom?", Sam asks as soon as Alex reenters the bedroom.

"I told you we didn't have time", Alex says.

"I thought we were picking her up", Sam shrugs, "You're always late. I figured we'd just say traffic or something and you didn't think that you can't use your DEO siren to speed through".

"Yeah, just blame it on me", Alex says, in mock offense.

Sam smirks, reaching out to straighten the collar of Alex's shirt. "Well, I was using it for our benefit but…", she leans in close letting out a breathy sigh, "too late now".

Alex shudders, dropping her head back, as her knees go weak at Sam's tone. "That was evil", she says, trying to calm her heart rate.

"Come on she's waiting for us", Sam says, ushering Alex out of the bedroom when she catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror, her previously slicked hair no longer in place.

"You let me answer the door looking like this?", Alex says, in a very loud whisper, "I look like I got mauled by a horny tiger".

"Oh geez, calm down", Sam says, running her hands through the auburn hair to lay in back in place, "it's not that bad. Besides it's barely 11, it's highly plausible that you'd just woken up".

Alex sputters but Sam is gone across the hall to check on Ruby leaving Alex to trudge back downstairs, a guilty, embarrassed, blush rising up her neck.

"Ah, are you all ready?", Eliza asks.

"Yeah, they should be down any minute", Alex says, running a hand across her hair to make sure it's in place.

"I'm so glad I don't have to deal with short hair", Eliza says, picking up her bag. "It must be difficult to get it to lay down", she finishes with a knowing look at Alex whose entire face goes crimson.

Thankfully she is saved by Ruby rushing down the stairs and barreling straight into Eliza.

"Careful Ruby", Sam warns, gracefully floating down the stairs, "You can't go tackling people like that". Sam kisses a zoned out, staring Alex, snapping her out of it before walking over to Eliza and hugging her, "Hello, I wish you had let us pick you up rather than come all the way out here".

"No trouble at all", Eliza says, "I figured we were going to be on this side of town anyway no reason for you all to fight traffic".

Both women flush at this comment, but Sam recovers quickly, "Well let's load up then". Ruby leads the way outside Eliza following, while Sam grabs her bag and hands Alex the keys.

"Apparently you use that excuse too much", Alex mutters.

"Or you're late too often", Sam shoots back.

"Oh, that's all you, now, either dragging me back to bed or still fixing your hair", Alex says.

"Oh, like you don't enjoy all this", Sam says, gesturing to herself.

Alex wraps an arm around her waist, pulling her until their hips are flush against each other. "I absolutely do", she says, kissing her deeply.

"Let's gooo", Ruby yells from the car, breaking up the kiss.

Alex smirks at Sam and slides her hand down Sam's arm, interlocking their fingers and leading the way outside. She opens the passenger door, letting Sam slide in, and shuts it before strutting around the car to her own door. She slides in, starts the car, and backs out of the driveway with a flourish, a very self-satisfied smirk on her face.

Lena wakes not long after settling down on the couch. She takes a deep breath blinking as she wipes the sleep from her eyes. She nearly falls back asleep when Kara starts gently rubbing over her shoulders. She turns over, folding her hands over Kara's sternum and resting her chin on them, a sleepy smile taking over her face at the easy grin on Kara's.

"Hey", Kara says, bringing one hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind Lena's ear.

"Hey yourself", Lena says, with a large yawn.

"You feel better now?", Kara asks.

"Much", Lena says, leaning up to kiss Kara.

Kara pulls her closer, deepening the kiss, until Lena's stomach growls.

Lena groans as she pulls back and Kara chuckles, moving her hands down to Lena's stomach. "Hi, baby. Are you hungry? Mommy didn't feed you breakfast huh", Kara coos at her stomach.

"Yeah, well Mommy wasn't hungry because baby made her nauseous", Lena says, defending herself, even as her heart races at the thought of her new title, as she stands up to head to the kitchen.

Kara speeds in front of her getting out all Lena's favorite foods for breakfast, "what do you want? We've got eggs and sausage and pancakes. Or oh I can fly to Dublin. Or Paris".

"Kara, darling, calm down", Lena says.

"Right", Kara says, taking a deep breath, "What do you want?".

"I'd love coffee but since I can't have it. Those scones from Dublin would be great", Lena says, smirking.

"Absolutely", Kara says. Lena barely registers the kiss before Kara is gone, the only sign of her existence were the curtains fluttering.

Lena smiles, walking over to her favorite chair to curl up in, grabbing her book on the way, and settling in. She finishes nearly two chapters before she hears the flutter of curtains and a kiss on her head.

"Good book?", Kara asks, setting the bag on the small end table before sliding one arm under Lena's knees and the other around her shoulders, lifting her gently to set Lena in her lap.

"Very good, but those scones smell better", Lena says, placing her bookmark back in place and trading the book for the bag full of pastries.

"Well help yourself", Kara says, pulling out napkins and a scone for Lena, and passing it over before taking one for herself.

"Thank you, darling", Lena says, kissing Kara's cheek.

"I promised you I would fly and get whatever you were craving", Kara says, smiling, "I'm just sorry I couldn't the first couple weeks".

Lena smiles, "Not your fault". She curls herself up tighter, tucking her head under Kara's chin, "I'm just glad you're here".

"Always", Kara says, leaving a kiss in Lena's hair before going back to her scone.

"Give me a minute to let this settle", Alex says.

Ruby pouts but goes off on her own, dribbling the soccer ball she found in the back of the car.

"How that kid can eat and eat and eat and just start running is beyond me", Alex says, groaning as she sits down on a park bench, pulling Sam down beside her.

"She wasn't the one that took it upon herself to finish the quiche", Sam teases, nudging Alex's side.

"Oh, don't do that", Alex moans, clutching her full stomach. Sam chuckles, pulling Alex into her side as Eliza sits down beside them.

"It is a beautiful day", Eliza says, "Do you all get to come to the park often?".

"We try to", Sam says.

"There's a good soccer field over there so I'll bring Ruby when I'm off and she doesn't have homework", Alex says.

Eliza smiles to herself, glad her daughter finally gets to be the mom she always wanted to be.

"Alex gets to play with her a lot and they both love it", Sam says, grinning happily at her girlfriend. "And I'm perfectly content to sit and watch whenever I'm off", she laughs.

The three women continue to sit and talk while watching Ruby practice on the field in front of them. Eventually, Alex takes a deep breath and kisses Sam on the cheek, not interrupting the conversation, and takes off, swiping the ball from Ruby before kicking it hard into the back of the net. Sam laughs, shaking her head, as Alex rubs in circles around Ruby, screaming, "GOAL!", as the teenager laughs.

"I swear she's like a kid sometimes", Eliza says, fondly.

"When she's not out running a government organization", Sam adds.

"Sometimes even then", Eliza says, "You should've seen her when she got that first specialty gun, the one Lena made her. My goodness, she would not stop playing with that thing, and reciting all the specs on it, although half the stuff sounded made-up".

"Oh no I believe it", Sam laughs, "Lena can make some pretty amazing tech but no one is more excited to use it than Alex, or if it's a suit, Kara".

"It's a Danvers thing", Eliza shrugs. "Jeremiah used to tinker on an old car, the radio, anything he could find and when it got that thing to work, it was like the best new toy", she says reminiscently.

Sam nods, understandingly, and lets the conversation lull as they both turn to watch just in time to see Ruby pull a pretty tricky move on Alex and score.

"Go Ruby", Sam cheers, laughing when Alex pouts.

"That's a Danvers thing too", Eliza laughs.

"The killer pout", Sam says, "I believe it. Even Lena still isn't immune, and she's been dealing with Kara's for years".

"I barely am and only because I can pull the mom look and Kara will stop", Eliza says.

"Lena can lift her eyebrow, which sometimes works. Unfortunately, I don't have anything that can stop it yet", Sam laughs, "just an iron will not to give in".

Sweaty and tired, the soccer players trudge over dropping onto the bench. "Who won?", Sam asks.

"Me", Ruby replies, as Alex says, "I did".

Both turn to look at each other and Sam knows what's coming next. "Well, it looked like a good game either way", she says trying to mediate before their competitive spirits clash.

The moment is broken anyway when Alex's phone rings with the DEO ringtone.

"It's your day off", Sam says, confused.

"They must have an update on that group we've been tracking", Alex shrugs, walking a few paces away to take the call.

"Shit are you serious?", Alex says into the phone, not noticing the worried looks on Sam, Ruby, and Eliza's faces. "I hoped they'd give up", Alex says, "We can't let them come back. Kara can't stay hidden forever, we need Supergirl and Kara Danvers". Alex takes a deep breath. "I can be there in ten", she says, heavily before hanging up and walking back over to the bench. "I'm so sorry", she says, looking between all three people sitting, looking up at her. "Can you drop me off and you all still go enjoy the day and I'll meet you back at home?", she says, looking at Sam.

Sam smiles sadly, standing to be close to Alex, "Of course. Be safe".

"It's just a plan today. If we do anything, it won't be until tomorrow", Alex says, promisingly, leaning up to kiss Sam, reassuringly.

"Come on", Sam says, motioning at Ruby who stands quickly, reading the way back to the car.

"Sorry", Alex says to Eliza.

"I know I put too much pressure on you to protect your sister", Eliza says, "but this is your job, and you are damn good at it. Just be safe".

"I will", Alex says, hugging her mom.

"I should tell you", Eliza starts, "Kara got her powers back this morning and you and I both know she's going to want to help end this". She wants to add because they threatened her wife and child but doesn't want to spoil the surprise for Alex.

"What? Why didn't anyone tell me?", Alex says.

"It just happened this morning and she didn't want you rushing to the DEO to run tests on your day off. I'm sure Lena, will do some to check that she's back to full strength. I'm just telling you because if Brainy or J'onn call her, she's going to show up to fight".

Alex nods, knowing her mom is right, "Thanks".

After breakfast, Lena stayed curled up in Kara's lap and continued reading her book while Kara watched TV with the volume undiscernible without superhearing.

"I guess we should tell your sister since Eliza knows", Lena says, out of nowhere, one hand holding open her book, the other resting on her stomach.

"Yeah", Kara says, "I kind of wanted to do a big reveal".

"We can still do that", Lena says, "I just figured you'd want Alex to know".

"I do", Kara says, "Just for everyone else. We just tell Alex but do a game night or something where we both come in with shirts or something and see how long it takes people to realize".

Lena laughs, "you've thought this through".

"Yeah", Kara says, "I think J'onn obviously will know first because, hello, telepath, but Nia will realize first and squeal and hug us and then say something like now that dream makes sense. Brainy will say something like 'There was a 99% possibility that this would happen' because he helped you and you figured it out, but science can never be 100%". Lena smiles, placing her bookmark and setting the novel aside as she gazes lovingly at Kara, as she predicts their friends' reactions. "What's that look for?", Kara says, done with her predictions.

"Nothing", Lena says, shaking her head.

"What?", Kara asks, "Come on you can tell me?".

"I totally agree that everyone will react the way you've predicted I just loved the little 'science can never be 100%'", Lena says, kissing Kara cheek, "You're adorable".

"And right", Kara defends, "There are always unexplainable, unknown variables that no one could ever predict during an experiment. Really nothing should ever be above 97.67% but…mmph".

Lena cuts her off with a kiss, "You know I love when you talk science with me".

"But you're the genius, I know", Kara says, teasingly.

Lena shakes her head, "No way. You did quantum mechanics at age four. I may have done it well before earth standards but you, darling, are definitely the genius".

"Well then we're both geniuses", Kara smiles, kissing Lena and holding her waist tightly as the brunette turns, placing her knees on either side of Kara's hips.

The kiss deepens quickly, and just as Lena starts moving her hips, Kara's DEO phone rings.

"Dammit", the brunette huffs, burying her face in the blonde's neck.

"Sorry", Kara says, kissing Lena's head as she grabs the phone and answers the call, "Supergirl".

"Well, that's good", Kara says a few moments later, "Oh no that's bad". She listens for a minute before Lena feels her tense. She places a kiss on Kara's cheek as she holds her tight. "Of course. I'm helping. They threatened Lena and …", Kara stops herself before she reveals their news, "I don't care. I'll be in a pod o my space suit and I got my powers back. I'll do whatever tests you want but I am going to end this before they can come terrorize us again".

Lena stiffens, unsure of how she feels about Kara being so stubborn about going. She did just get her powers back and in a pod or space suit? Hell no, her wife is not going into space.

Kara hangs up the phone, heaving a sigh as she chucks it onto the couch, and drops her head onto Lena's shoulder.

Lena runs her hands through the perfect golden curls, dropping a kiss before resting her chin on Kara's head. "What's going on?", she asks, as calmly as possible.

"The guys didn't actually find Argo", Kara says, "but they're coming back and if they find out that I'm still alive or go after you or our baby… I can't let that happen so we're going to shoot them out of the sky before they land". Kara pulls back, looking Lena in the eye, "I know I just got my powers back and I will submit to any test you, J'onn, and Alex want but I'm going to protect you", Kara says, with a stubborn set of her jaw, juxtaposed with a gentle hand on Lena's stomach, "and our baby and I will come home to you both. Khap vrreiahv". (I promise)

"Khap raozh" (I know), Lena answers in Kryptonese knowing Kara only uses it to make a point. She leans forward, placing her forehead against Kara's, "I trust you will do everything in your power to come home. Now let me do everything in my power to make sure you're ok before I send you into deep space".

Kara nods, "You want to change first, or do you want to go to the DEO wearing Supergirl pj pants and my NCU hoodie?", Kara says, teasingly, trying to lighten the mood.

"That call sufficed as a cold shower, but I am going to change. Give me ten", Lena says, kissing Kara again, to reassure them both. Kara holds her close, pouring love and trust and promise into the embrace.

"Nine minutes", Kara says, after breaking the kiss letting Lena breathe, "Hurry up".

Lena scowl playfully, pecking Kara again before dismounting from her lap and heading to the bedroom.

Kara sighs as she watches her go, wondering how she got so lucky and praying to Rao that they can finish the fight sooner rather than later, and safely, because Rao knows, Lena doesn't need any more scares.

"I don't like it", J'onn says, "Yes, sometimes there are no paths to peace, but this seems too far".

"We don't really have a choice", Alex says, "they can't figure out Kara's still alive".

"No. We don't have a choice because they are planning to come back and will capture one of you to get information", Kara says, looking straight at Lena as she says it, "I'm as anti-killing as the next guy but we have to end this, now".

J'onn sighs, looking at Brainy, "What do you think?".

"I agree with them. It's not what we want but it's the only option", Brainy says, "We could let them land but even I can't predict what they might do. Anger leads all species to act irrationally".

"We'll put out a call. Anyone that still has their ship they came in on, if they're willing to donate. We have Kara's pod, and her suit is space proof", Alex says, "We'll get together a team of pilots and shoot them down before they can enter Earth's atmosphere. We'll take off tomorrow".

Everyone nods. Kara steps closer to Lena gripping her hand.

"Hey Kar", Alex says, "ready for the tests?".

"Yeah, let's go", Kara says, looking at Lena, squeezing her hand before all three head to the lab.

Kara sits on the edge of the bed while Lena grabs a phlebotomist kit and Alex gathers all kinds of different scanners.

"I'm sorry", Lena says, careful to keep the needle out of Kara's sight as long as possible.

"It's ok", Kara says, swallowing nervously as she keeps her eyes on Lena.

"I'll be quick", the scientist says, as she holds a red light above Kara's elbow before giving Kara a quick kiss and swiftly inserting the needle to start the blood flow.

Kara winces but keeps her eyes trained on Lena, taking in her furrowed brow and focused gaze as she bites her lower lip. Kara smiles, despite the situation, when Lena looks up from the vials.

"Almost there", the brunette promises.

Kara nods and braces herself as Lena removes the needle and switches the red light back to yellow immediately healing the small nick in Kara's arm.

"All done", Lena says, giving Kara another kiss before tossing the needle in the biohazard bin and taking the vials over to the microscope and centrifuge.

"My turn", Alex says, stepping up to Kara and setting down all the devices.

Alex runs a battery of tests, from Kara's yellow sun saturation to basic boldly functions, including even taking her blood pressure.

"See I'm fine", Kara says, after what feels like the millionth test.

"You promised to do any test we wanted", Lena says, looking up from the microscope. Kara gives her a pout, but Lena just laughs and turns back to the sample.

"If Lena gives the all-clear, the only thing left is to check reaction time and that all of your powers are working properly", Alex says.

"Then let's go", Kara says, jumping off the bed and looking over at Lena.

Lena sighs, giving Kara a small smile, "Everything looks normal. White, red, and platelets all at normal levels. Plenty of yellow sun saturation and absolutely no traces of Kryptonite. You're good to go".

Kara pumps her fist but sees the worry in Lena's face. "I'll meet you in the training room", she says, waving Alex on as she approaches Lena. "I'll be ok", Kara says, "I'll only be there to back up the ships. I can't use heatvision or freeze breath in space so I'm only there to protect the ships that will be firing on the others. I'll be in the suit you made, and I know it will keep me safe because you, Lena, you always keep me safe".

By the end of Kara small speech both women have tears in their eyes.

"I love you", Lena says, leaning up on her tiptoes to kiss Kara.

"I love you too", Kara says, returning the kiss, "You want to come watch all my powers?".

"And then we can go home and cuddle?", Lena asks. She never thought she'd be the type of person to rely so heavily on physical contact but after everything they've been through, Lena doesn't want to waste another second of her life not being in Kara's warm, loving, embrace. Plus, the pregnancy makes her tired and hormonal so blame the fact that she's literally creating human life.

Kara smiles, pulling Lena close, "Of course we can".

Lena mirrors Kara's smile and kisses her again, "Well then come on. Go blow stuff up".

Kara grins, bouncing off happily down the hall.
