Chapter 12
With Kara and Lena leaving the day after Mother's Day, Alex and Sam delayed some of the celebrations to spend the night before with them before they leave for their long trip to visit Argo. Ruby had set up a reservation at a nice place as a surprise, now for both of them since everyone had signed the papers and they had an appointment with a judge next week to validate everything.
After a nice meal, Alex helps Sam up and follows her out, a comforting hand on the small of her back. As Sam veers to the left, towards where they've left the car, Alex digs her fingers in slightly, turning her back towards her. "Hey", Alex says, a nervous grin on her face, "Let's walk this way.
"Ok", Sam grins back and turns towards the walkway down the waterfront.
As they stroll down the brick path, Alex slides her hand from Sam's back to her wrist to interlock their fingers. They get close to the statue of Supergirl that Lena had unveiled all those years ago and Alex gets pulled into memories.
"You know", Alex says, her voice far away, before she turns back to Sam, "I always knew I wanted to be a mom, knew I wanted it more than anything when I met you guys that day, right here, but I never imagined what it would be like to be with such an amazing partner".
"Me neither", Sam smiles through watery eyes, "I did it all on my own before and I can't imagine what it will be like with you by my side".
When their lips connect, Alex can't think of anything but doing this for the rest of her life.
Lena and Kara quickly settle into their room and Lena is thankful there's an ensuite all for themselves, even though she hopes that the morning sickness will fade now that she is out of the first trimester. They settled on the couch, Lena curled into Kara's side, clutching a pillow to hide her stomach when Zor-El comes through the door.
"Kara and Lena!", he cheers, dropping his bag and heading straight for the couch, "Oh it is so good to see you both".
Lena is thankful she's still wearing Kara's hoodie, helping to hide her stomach while she stands and returns the hug.
"It's good to be back", she says, backing out of the hug to give Kara and her father some time to themselves.
"Where's mom?", Kara asks, as she too pulls back.
"High Council meeting", Zor-El answers, "it's a quick one, not much going on around here".
At that moment, Alura steps through the door, almost tripping over the strap of Zor-El's bag. "What in Rao's name?", she says, regaining her balance. "Hello, girls", she says, finally scanning the room and walking up to hug them, giving Zor-El a pointed look over their shoulders. He scurries over and picks up his bag and Kara and Lena both giggle as they pull back from the hug.
"Someone might think she's your mom and not mine with that glare", Kara dramatically whispers, into Lena's ear.
"Oh please", Lena scoffs, turning to look at Kara, "You know I prefer scaring people with the eyebrow".
Kara gives a fake shudder at the thought and Lena chuckles, leaning into her side, as they turn back to Alura and Zor-El, the former rambling about something in his lab before he rushes off to put his bag away.
"At least we know it's hereditary and not just you figuring out your second language", Lena teases.
"Actually English was my fourteenth", Kara says, trying to think back, "Yeah, or maybe fifteenth".
"Woah, what?", Lena asks, "How did I not know this?".
Kara just shrugs, "I don't know. It never came up".
"But you were so impressed that I knew six even if my Korean is rudimentary at best", Lena says.
"Cause Earth languages are hard", Kara whines, "I was tempted to tell my French teacher that I already knew 14 other languages just to get out of it… but I couldn't reveal the whole alien thing".
"And how many Earth languages do you know?", Lena asks.
"Three", Kara answers, "like 6,000 if you count knowing 'help', 'thank you', and 'you're welcome. Be safe' as knowing the language".
"Wow", Lena breathes out.
"I always liked languages", Kara shrugs, "Dad used to teach me languages of the places he was going. I seemed to have a knack for it. I could've gone into the ambassador's guild but science was where an El was supposed to go".
"And now you're an ambassador, first responder, and journalist, and I guess we can count scientist considering the times you've helped me in the lab", Lena shrugs, "even if all you did was eat and distract".
"Hey! Your science is outdated compared to what I know and you like when I distract you", Kara says, nuzzling into Lena's neck, "beside you always have a eureka moment once you turn back to whatever you're working on".
"Fair point", Lena concedes, "I guess you do help".
Kara grins, vindicated until Lena wipes it away with a deep kiss, a teasing tongue tracing Kara's lower lip, before pulling away suddenly, replacing the smug grin with a dopey faraway look. Lena smirks as Alura calls them to the table for dinner.
They enjoy idle conversation while they eat but as Zor-El gets ready to clear his plate and head to his lab Kara stops him.
"Actually before you go we've kind of got some news. Some bad but the other thing is really really good", Kara trails off, looking at Lena with a grin, "You want to tell them?".
"Together", Lena says, squeezing Kara's hand.
"We're pregnant", they both say.
"Well Lena's pregnant", Kara adds, grinning at her parents who seem to be in shock.
"Oh congratulations!", they both cheer, reaching across the table to clasp hands.
"How far along?", Alura finally manages to ask.
"15 weeks", Lena answers, "I'm a little ways into the second trimester".
"We wanted to tell you guys in person", Kara says.
"Yes", Lena agrees, "without all the research and notes you lent me, I never would've been able to do this".
"I'm sure your brilliant mind would have found a way", Zor-El says, "nevertheless, I'm glad I could help".
"It's a little late to be just now telling you but we had some delays in being able to get here", Kara says, "that kind of brings me to the bad news".
The table goes still and quiet as everyone turns to Kara. Lena squeezes her hand in solidarity as she takes a deep breath to begin.
"We had a small issue with a group of aliens on Earth. They were all from the Rao system and were displaced when Krypton exploded", she says, her voice heavy. "They wanted revenge, to know where Argo City is, where you guys are, and my worst fears came true. Since they knew who I was behind the crest and Lena and I are such a public couple, they knew how to get to me", she explains her eyes starting to water, "At the time I didn't know about the baby. They were just threatening Lena and that was enough for me. The leader was interrogating me, powerless because of the kryptonite when someone said they'd found you guys anyway. They injected me with liquid Kryptonite, enough to kill me in less than an hour and dumped me on our balcony. I managed to get to the DEO hardline we had put in and they got it out of me in time".
Kara takes a minute to gather herself.
"I was out for a couple of days and when I came to, Lena was there", Kara turns to her, "She'd been in China for business stuff and came back to help and told me she was pregnant. It turns out the guys had the wrong coordinates for wherever they thought Argo was and were on their way back".
"We were able to gather some pods from around the city and ones the DEO had taken possession of and take them out before they could return and kill more aliens and possibly attack you guys", Kara says, "I wanted to let you all know that there was a threat to you all but we haven't heard anything else from anyone who agrees with the dissenters and so far there isn't anymore of a threat to Argo".
"Rao", Alura says.
"I understand if you need me to explain all of this to the High Council", Kara says.
"I will talk to some of the other members I trust", Alura states, "but I see no need to worry the people if everything is taken care of".
Kara smiles thankfully at her mom and sighs.
Zor-El veers them into lighter topics, hoping to get Lena's opinion on a new project he's looking into starting. Lena enjoys the challenge and learning some of the conversions between Kryptonian science and Earth even with Argo having taken a step back in some areas after their previous experiences.
Having just had a nice mother's night out, Sam and Alex are fully prepared to stay in and chill out for their first anniversary, neither one of them really wanting to make a big deal about it but Ruby has other plans.
First she lays out a breakfast for them and tells them both they will absolutely not be going into work.
Alex readily agrees, still enjoying to lull between crises, but Sam denies, "Lena left me in charge for the next three weeks while she's gone. Do you know what she would do to me if something happened?".
"And that's why she appointed the ever capable Jess as COO who has promised me that everything will be fine and that security has been ordered not to let you in the building anyway", Ruby says, a smirk on her face.
"Stan", Sam mutters under her breath, loving how loyal Lena's long time head of security is even when he and Jess team up against them.
The couple is also informed by the teen that they have reservations at a Michelin star restaurant, another gift from Jess, tonight at 7 and are off parenting duty for the night. "I won't be home until after soccer tomorrow so you get the house to yourselves", Ruby says, gathering her things and heading for the door, "I don't want to know what happens just please not the kitchen counter again".
Everyone flushes red at the memory of Ruby innocently asking why there was an orange under the edge of the counter and regretting it when neither woman would look her in the eye. Ruby bids them goodbye and rushes out the door to where Julia's mom is waiting to give her a ride to school.
AN: Sorry I'm a couple of days late again
The date will be next chapter.
Also, not really sure how much longer this will go. I'm currently looking at some time jumps over the next year through the rest of Lena's pregnancy and a bit beyond because I've had some of these future scenes written for a long time and am really excited about them. I don't want to drone on with day-to-day stuff (even though it's adorable, it's hard to write) and if you all have any suggestions lay them on me… I'd love to hear from you guys that have stuck with it this long and I'll find a way to work them in.
Thank you so much to everyone who reads, reviews, and leaves comments or kudos, getting the notification emails really makes my day.
