Chapter 13

Sam and Alex spend the day enjoying the peace and quiet, curled up together on the couch doing absolutely nothing until they start getting ready for their date night. Since her hair takes longer to dry, Sam showers first, sitting at the vanity doing her makeup while Alex showers.

"Go. You're getting me all wet again", Sam laughs, shoving a dripping Alex away.

"Oh, am I?", Alex teases, fingers lingering on Sam's thigh, her eyes dark and mischievous.

"You know what I meant", Sam laughs, kissing her lightly before pushing her away again, "Come on or we're gonna be late".

Alex relents but not before getting in a few more stolen kisses and goes and gets herself ready.

30 minutes later, a sharp Alex in her nicest black silk suit, her hair slicked back, is impatiently spinning the keys as she leans against the banister.

"You almost ready?", she calls up the stairs.

"Coming", Sam yells back but when Alex doesn't hear footsteps she goes to investigate.

She peeks around the doorframe and stops dead in her tracks, all air leaving her body at the sight of Sam in a long black dress, a devastatingly high slit up the left side. Sam has her long hair pinned up showing off her long neck and Alex can't speak.

"Ok fine coming in like a minute I swear", Sam says, putting her earrings in and turning towards Alex who is still half behind the door frame, the wall keeping her from face planting.

Sam's voice pulls her out of her trance. "You… s… ga…", Alex stutters out, unable to form words, "beautiful".

"Well, I'm glad that was at least the word you were able to get out", Sam teases, strutting over to pull Alex around the door frame. "And you're not so bad yourself", she winks, eyes raking up and down Alex, as her hands grasp her lapels.

"Do we have to go?", Alex says, her voice half whiny, half wistful.

"Ruby and Jess planned this out. Besides we have nothing to eat here", Sam says, "and we're going to need sustenance for later".

Alex lets out a little whimper at that but stands up tall, "Well then, shall we?", she says, holding out her elbow.

"Dork", Sam says, a beaming smile on her face as she loops her arm through Alex's.

"Your dork", Alex grins, kissing Sam's cheek, "and you love it".

"I guess", Sam smirks, and after Alex's gasp adds, "I love you".

"I love you too", Alex says, pulling her in for a kiss now that they're safely down the stairs.

The kiss quickly gets heated, and Sam pulls away. "Hold that thought", she teases heading out the door, leaving Alex to lock up.

Despite not being the type to ever take a true vacation, Lena has to admit, she doesn't mind the whole completely disconnected from reality thing they have going on considering they are on a different planet. Besides at this point in her pregnancy, the morning sickness has waned, but food aversions are still very apparent as is the energy draining task of creating human life.

They pretty much have the day to themselves so they'll go for a walk through the market or Kara will show her some monuments or artifacts that made it through the explosion and then they'll have lunch and go home for a nap. On a good day, the old Lena wouldn't nap unless she'd had less than three hours of sleep the night before and even then, it would a 20-minute power nap in her office before getting back to work. On vacation, she's getting a solid 8-9 hours and taking an hour-long nap and still feels tired. Of course, Kara playing with her hair or massaging her feet isn't exactly keeping her awake either.

Kara has enjoyed getting to see Lena relaxed, or as relaxed as an almost 4-month pregnant person can be. She's gotten to share a lot more of Krypton's history and even gotten to see some of the new things going on. She's been reading through documents that survived Krypton's destruction and getting learn about how things have changed as well as read some about what she wasn't old enough to know before…everything.

Nights are reserved for family time, Lena and Kara will help Alura in the kitchen and then the four of them will talk or play games until Lena just about falls asleep at the table and every agrees to head to bed.

Once they arrive at the restaurant, they are quickly shown to a small, round, private booth, hidden in the corner while not being totally isolated. Alex allows Sam to slide in first before sliding in beside her, their thighs pressed together as Alex loops an arm around Sam's waist.

"You look amazing", Alex says, holding her close as she kisses her cheek.

"You're pretty handsome in that suit yourself", Sam says, fighting a blush.

Alex never takes her arm off Sam for longer than 30 seconds, eating with her left hand. They order lots of different meals, sharing between the two of them as they talk about everything and nothing.

"Are you excited for Friday?", Sam eventually asks.

Alex turns, a questioning look on her face. "Are you kidding?", she laughs, "if I wasn't going to have you all to myself most of tomorrow, I'd wish we could just skip tomorrow and hurry up and make it official".

The glow of Sam's smile in the dim restaurant lighting tells Alex she said the perfect thing and when their lips connect a second later, she doesn't think she could be any happier.

They'd been really lucky to get such a quick court date for a judge to sign their papers and Alex to officially be Ruby's other parent.

"I can't wait to be a mom with you", Alex says.

"You already were", Sam admits, "even years ago. Every time you took care of Ruby when no one had any idea what was going on with me. Every time you put her first…".

Alex hears the break in her voice coming and pulls her close, comfortingly as Sam buries her face in Alex's shoulder. "I love you both so much", Alex says, "even back then, subconsciously, I knew. It hurt so much when you all left and that was what was best for everyone, I see that now, but I don't ever want to be away from you for longer than a day ever again".

"You won't", Sam promises, "I'm right here. We're right here and I'm not running away from this".

They both lean in, the kiss full of passion and love and just a couple tears. Neither one of them pushes, both content just to sit and bask in the emotion and the connection.

"Ughhhh", Alex groans, a pillow over her head, sheets trapping her legs as she feels around looking for Sam's warmth that should be filling the space beside her. Eventually her eyes adjust to the light peeking around the edge of the blackout curtains and under the door. "Sam", she calls out, stretching out her back as she throws her legs over the side of the bed. Multiple vertebrae pop and her legs are sore bringing back delicious memories of the night, and early morning, as well as why she's naked. Grabbing one of Sam's old t-shirts from the drawer, Alex goes in search of her girlfriend.

She heads to the kitchen first but doesn't smell anything or see Sam anywhere. She turns and that when she hears the sound of keys clicking coming from the office.

"You know this was not the morning after I pictured", Alex quips from the doorway.

Sam startles, sitting straight up as she makes guilty eye contact with Alex, "I thought you'd sleep at least another hour. I was going to make you breakfast and bring it up to you".

"You know I don't sleep as deep without you beside me", Alex says, walking over to her, "beside you fell asleep the same time I did".

"I know, I know", Sam says, "I just… you sleep later normally, and I've been fine the last 18 years going off less than five hours so I least I got more than that".

"You don't have to do it all alone anymore", Alex says, wrapping her arms around Sam as best she can while resting her chin on her shoulder nuzzling into her neck, "Come on. It's your day off. You deserve one every once in a while. A day off from absolutely everything. Just come back to bed".

Sam relaxes into Alex grip, "Ok".

"Good", Alex says, turning her around and grabbing her hands, pulling her up against her. "Now how hungry are you?".

"I could eat", Sam shrugs.

"Good you're going to need sustenance", Alex says, using Sam's words from last night.

Sam tries to lean in for a kiss, but Alex backs up, pulling Sam with her into the kitchen.

Lena is stretched out on the couch, almost asleep with her feet in Kara's lap, when she gets a weird sensation.

Kara feels her tense and quickly lays the book down and slides down so she is laying kind of beside Lena, her head even with Lena's stomach. "Hey, you ok?", she asks her hearing tuned into Lena's heartbeat and when it seems fine, turned towards the baby.

"Yeah, it was nothing", Lena shakes her head, "just like a tickle, just a weird feeling".

"You're sure you're ok?", Kara asks, one hand holding herself up while the other slips under Lena's top.

"I'm sure, Kara", Lena says, placing her hand over Kara's, "We're both ok".

"Good", Kara nods, before turning to Lena's stomach "You calm down in there and stop worrying us".

Kara quickly jumps back as Lena grimaces. "Woah what was that?", Kara asks.

"A foot I think", Lena says, laughing, "Baby doesn't like to be reprimanded".

Kara's eyes go wide, "Was that the first kick?", she asks, her eyes watery.

Lena nods, pulling her shirt up a little higher and looking down at her stomach, her own eyes filling with tears, "First one I've really felt. Talk some more".

Kara nods, and for once can't think of any words. "Uh hi baby. Sorry I yelled at you. I didn't mean it. We just… we want to make sure you and mom are completely healthy", Kara says, looking up at Lena, realizing this was the first time either one of them had said mom. "Mom would say I'm overprotective but I think I have a right to be", Kara says, grinning up at Lena who rolls her eyes, and the ramble is off. She doesn't get the baby to kick again and is running out of conversation. "We love you so much and we can't wait to meet you", Kara finishes, raising up to press a wet, teary, kiss to Lena's lips, both of them feeling a kick to the spot where their hands are joined over Lena's stomach.

"You ready for this?", Alex says, her arm around Ruby's shoulder pulling her close.

"Yeah", Ruby nods, a wide grin on her face.

Alex grins back, kissing the top of her head as Sam comes around the car and the three of them head into the courthouse together.

They don't have to wait long for the clerk to come get them but long enough that Alex's knee bouncing gets on Sam's nerves. Even a calming hand on her thigh doesn't stop the repetitive motion.

"I'm sorry. I can't stop it", Alex says, crossing her legs at the knee to try to stop.

"It's ok. High emotions and waiting doesn't help", Sam nods.

Alex looks over at her gratefully, leaning in for a light kiss, quickly interrupted by the squeak of the large door.

"Judge Ballard will see you now, in chambers", the clerk says, motioning for them to follow her.

Alex's nerves relax, having worked with Judge Ballard on previous cases, especially ones with kids involved, as they walk back to her office.

"Agent Danvers", the judge greets her with a firm handshake, "Good to see you again and in much better circumstances".

"Same here. Thank you for fitting us in so quickly", Alex replies, stepping back and wrapping an arm around Sam, the other on Ruby's shoulder, "this is my partner Sam and her daughter Ruby".

"You make a beautiful family", the judge compliments, "a couple of basic questions and we'll be out of here shortly".

They all settle in, taking a deep breath as the judge asks her first question.

Alex barely gathers herself enough to make it back through the courthouse and into the car and Sam and Ruby aren't doing much better.

"Do you feel different?", Ruby asks, her voice still hoarse and shaky.

"Not emotionally", Alex says, "I still love you the same, so so much, but… I feel safer, knowing it's official, knowing if God forbid something happened, you're officially related to me". She looks back at Ruby, seeing the smile on her face as she squeezes Sam's hand.

"Same", Ruby says, "I don't how to explain it. It's not more or different but just… fuller".

"Emotions are weird", Alex agrees.

"Didn't you date a therapist?", Sam teases.

"I'm an agent, I hate shrinks and while she was nice and good at her job, I can do without the psychoanalysis of everything in my personal life", Alex laughs.

"Fair point", Ruby laughs.

"Besides I always knew it was you guys", Alex smirks, leaning over and puckering her lips asking for a kiss.

"Charmer", Sam drawls, leaning over to kiss her and effectively ending the conversation.

AN: Before you say anything, I didn't mind Kelly as a character or Alex's partner but they came together over the whole kid thing the reason Maggie and Alex broke up so… kind of seemed like a rebound overcompensation situation and I feel like Alex would be the type to push down her emotion and not want to analyze them while still coping in a healthy way and not utilizing Lena's little boxes method.

As always thank you all so much for reading and reviewing, comments and kudos, whatever platform you're on, thank you.
